what are ur fave kaz headcanons?
oh fantastic ask anon
I’m a big fan of Kaz using post-canon time to really reflect on his priorities and evaluate his dreams and goals with life outside of vengeance and spite. With Inej out on the seas, I believe he’ll have a lot more empty space around him than he realized and I don’t think he’ll much enjoy it, so I imagine he’ll build some stronger relationships with newer Dregs (and Jesper and Wylan, though I think it’ll take some time and serious effort for Kaz to see them as confidants and friends). Personally… I’d love to see Kaz annihilate the Barrel competition and rise to the top, but I also think he’d be good at reforming life in the Barrel and in Ketterdam along the way. I’m a staunch advocate for Kaz to help reform the city, even just a little bit. It won’t become virtuous and good overnight — or possibly ever — but I think he’d make an effort. At first for Inej’s sake, and finally for the sake of kids like Jordie.
He does not get a completely new haircut but I think as he gets older it’s less intense. Lets it grow out a bit so it’s not horrendously emo. Also I am a big fan of Kaz with a lot of tattoos. I’ve definitely brainrotted about it before… but he’s gonna get Inej’s full set of knives tattooed on him at some point.
I really like the idea of Kaz establishing some sort of halfway home for children by themselves in Ketterdam, and I am absolutely not the first person to think of this — a fantastic read that comes to mind about this is A Safe Place to Land by @insignificant457 (xoxo!!)
I think Kaz will spend a significant portion of his time ensconced in discovering who the Council of Tides is, what they’re doing in Ketterdam and what ties they have to other nations/agendas… essentially I think they’ll be the villains of the next book (if it’s actually a thing). This will land him in some serious deep water, but he’s entirely too nosey to ignore how fucking shady they are, so yeah.
Kaz enjoys logic puzzles (a modern Kaz would probably find Sudoku fun, if a bit too simple). For his birthdays, Inej finds logic puzzles from across the world, and gifts them to him alongside whatever other practical needs he might have.
His desk is the only thing he keeps messy and it’s because he tends to sprawl as he works. However, he knows exactly where every paper and statement is, and it’s a bit unnerving. “Second stack down, twenty pages in, that’s the ledger for Oktober 21” (terrifying!)
And Inej! Way down the line I like to think they’ll retire to Lij or some other nondescript farm town where they can peaceably live and grow old together. But while they’re still young, they share Kaz’s bedroom in the Slat, and eventually a quiet cottage on the outskirts of the Barrel. It’s a pain for Kaz to get to with his leg, but when she’s home he’ll make the trek. Kaz decorates the house. Inej likes having things that are hers inside but her method of layering decor is an assault to Kaz’s eyes so he handles it. Kaz’s favorite thing when Inej is home is being able to fully let his guard down around her. He’s easily annoyed when Inej puts her un-socked feet on his lap (which she does frequently because it pisses him off). She gets back on his good side by kissing his temple and running her fingers through the fine hair at the back of his neck.
Mostly any ideas I’ve got running around about Kaz just involve him working at setting his life on track and figuring out his dreams and goals outside Jordie’s vengeance. Love him so much
