Hilda is even more obscure than I initially thought; a mythological masterpiece!

I’m not sure how many other people have noticed this, but here’s the list I’ve made from lots of research! This post will consist of no specific spoiler. But if you don’t want to know about anything yet, DO NOT READ THIS!!!

So after re watching the entire show, I noticed something rather interesting. Each episode features a creature or culture derived from ancient mythology. 

Episode 1;

The Elves: At first, I assumed this was about fairies. The tiny civilizations they must have. But after looking at the landscaping of the backgrounds, it hit me. These are based off of Iceland’s Huldufolk. This translates directly to hidden people. Said to be protectors of their good fortune, the government of Iceland made completely illegal any construction or interference with what is supposedly land that belongs to these small, invisible elves, who live in miniature houses called alfhols. Wait. Alf? Alfur? Coincidence? I think not. 

Episode 2;

Giants: The giants of Hilda are solely based off of Norse mythology. Legend tells of a tribe of beautiful giants, who once lived between the Sierra Nevada and the Rocky Mountains. There were hundreds of species, living in hundreds of habitats. The Great Spirit, however, grew tired of their aloof and mighty behaviors toward each other, so he allowed their enemies to conquer them; the humans. Only two giants survived: Paiute and his wife. Sounds about right. 

The Woodman: This monotone cryptic of Hilda’s assorted friends took me quite a bit of research to track down the origins to. But finally, I found him. Based on Greek culture, he’s actually a dryad, or “oak nymph”. These walking, wooden creatures exist to look after the oak tree they were forged from. So let’s suspend some disbelief and assume Hilda’s ancestor used the Woodman’s tree in order to build the cabin Hilda lives in. Why else would he have stuck around, since he’s always minorly annoyed and yet indubitably shows up in many of Hilda’s childhood crayon drawings? Just a thought.

Episode 3;

Thunderbird: These birds originate from Native American beliefs. By flapping its gigantic wings, it creates thunder and lightning, controlling the storm season and bringing excellent harvest. With storms, come rain, so the arrival of the thunderbird was always a promising sign. Present in their dances, tattoos, and carvings, he protected them from the great horned serpent and it’s destructive tendencies, bringing whoever favored him good luck and prosperity. Slides right in with Trolberg’s annual parade, don’t you think? And it brings a whole new connotation to the city’s “statue”, when the Great Raven explains how he had sat on top of it; his symbol was always present at the very top of a totem pole. 

Episode 4;

Vittra: These stinky little onions are more than they seem to be. From Northern Sweden, these underground dwelling nature spirits are very aggressive, territorial, and hated humans. They’re also known to have invisible cattle, which they milk for food and commonly steal from mortals who have wronged them. Really explains the cows, huh? They’re known to make humans’ lives miserable, especially when they meddle with their tunnels, lifestyle, or even cross their borders. Even in modern day, people have moved their homes away from any nearby “vittraställe”, or vittra way, just in case. 

Episode 5;

Trolls: Another Icelandic folktale, trolls are said to have been dim witted, man eating creatures that turned to stone upon contact with sunlight. Even in Lord of the Rings, they used these concepts. So why wouldn’t Hilda? If you visit the beaches of Iceland, it is said that the huge boulders scattered about the shores, and in the water, were once trolls. They were caught by the dawn as they attempted to crush the ships returning to their homes, carrying fishermen finding food for their families. These “troll rocks” are their bodies, reaching out to the sea, now forever entrapped in stone. 

Episode 6; 

Marra: Originally known as mare, which eventually attributes to the word “nightmare”, the Hungarian marra are malicious entities that possess humans with certain amounts of negative energy. Teenagers with depression, mostly, which also helped create the possessed, creepy kid trope in horror movies. While you sleep, they perch on your chest, and expose your mind to its deepest fear. Eventually, the marra evolved into the legend of the boogey man, so in retrospect, they never actually disappeared. 

Episode 7;

The Bragga: These outcasted group of elves, who made a failed contract with the Aldric family over “No Elf’s Land”, aren’t just coincidentally donning beard braids and helmets, obsessed with fighting physically, drinking ale, spitting, and riding rabbits like they’re jousting horses. They’re based off of Nordic Vikings, their separation from Scandinavia, and the culture that they eventually developed. Their tendencies to favor combat over reason is made evident, too, however stereotypical it may be. This is pretty much the only example the show has used so far to allude to a historical period of time. 

Episode 8;

Tide Mice: Taken from Mapuche mythology, these voodoo rodents are actually supposed to be colo colos. Evil, rat-like creatures, they hide in your house to feed on your saliva while you sleep, eventually bringing about comatose states and long term memory loss. Once all of your life juice has been depleted, your soul is completely sucked from your body and the colo colo consumes it in order to go on living. Despite their complete irrelevance with wicca, the way the show manages to assimilate the two is genius. 

Episode 9;

Ghosts: I feel like this speaks for itself. They’re very commonly used, but the show does a good, unique job of connecting a ghostly presence not with a negative haunting that needs to be handled or else everyone will die, but with a helpful spirit, just hanging around a house because it’s linked to a specific item or object. 

Episode 10;

Wind Spirits: The wind spirits, which were based off of Roman Anemoi, minor wind gods that each represented a cardinal direction, are shown in Hilda as debaters who couldn’t come to a conclusion. Their fighting is what makes gigantic natural disasters. This is mocking a bit of fun of Roman philosophers, who were known to sit around in their forums, arguing until the entire town couldn’t stand it. The irritated citizens would call these prolonged discussions, “storms of the intellect”. 

Episode 11;

Cursed Cottage: I have no clue where this myth derives from, and I couldn’t find much else except Into the Woods songs, but this is basically adopting the enchanted cottage trope. The gingerbread house that actually houses a wicked witch, the lone hut that holds everything Goldilocks longs for except for its occupants; so many fairy tales center their setting around a manipulative house that tries to snatch you up and never let you go. So this one is probably just a primal usage of that timeless idea, combined with a cool twist of inter dimensional neurotics. Pretty cool!

Episode 11;

Nisse: Also fondly known as house brownies, nisse are Norweigian dwarves, living inside of your home. Sometimes known to mischievously steal your things, like socks, car keys, old toys, jewelry, etc, they make nests in your walls or your abandoned, most frequently forgotten to check spots. If you are kind to them, leave them food, and treat them well, they will go out of their way to do good things for you, like wash your dishes, dust your desk, or, yknow, purge evil energies from your body. But if you anger them, they can be quite a hassle; breaking things is a usual reaction. Either way, if you ever catch them, you have the right to forcefully evict them from your home. 

Episode 12;

Black Hounds: Black hounds, throughout the history of mythology, are always seen as a dark, ominous omen, warning you of potential suffering, struggle, pain, turmoil, chaos and death. So pretty darn bad. Seeing a black hound, or even owning one, is still a superstition, today. They’re literally called the “accumulation of everything that is evil on this plane of existence.” But, if you haven’t already watched Hilda, keep Sirius Black in mind, and his patronus, which reminds us, “don’t read a book by it’s cover.” 

That’s all I’ve got to say, gamers! There are some that I skipped, like the lindworm, water spirits, stuff like that. But all in all, Hilda is a mythological masterpiece. Watch it whenever you can if you appreciate lore in any way, because it’s not just a beautiful, naturally diversified show about a socially anxious girl assimilating into a new culture. It’s taking incredibly interesting and obscure pieces of mythological history and braiding it into a perfectly constructed storyline. Whether or not it’s educational is up to you. Not even including here how breath takingly gorgeous the animation, use of color, and backgrounds are. Just... please. Don’t sleep on it!

9x01: Details

Good morning! So today, I'm going over details.

***Once again, spoilers abound for TWD 9x01. I think most people have watched by now, but if you haven’t, don’t click the READ MORE. You’ve been warned!***

Of course we saw a lot of motorcycles at the beginning. We could call that part of the Bike Theory. 

We also naturally saw a lot of horses. I notice the ones between behind and Jesus were both dark and light. Of course, with lots of horses that the characters were writing all throughout.

I want to say a word about the crucifixion walker on the X. First of all, it's on X. (X theory). As I said yesterday, it's one of three Daryl shoots in the head, and because premieres set up for the rest of the season, I think this points to us seeing a crucifixion this year. Maybe not a literal one, but maybe seeing the truth of what happened with Beth.

We also discussed in my group that there are major parallels between this walker and the one outside the moonshine shack that Daryl did target practice on. 

We felt like this was a Beth moment because in Still, she got after him for being flippant about killing walkers. She thought it was more respectful to “just kill it,” than to use it in a way that might be disrespectful to the person the walker once was. We think that's why Daryl shot this walker. In truth, using a walker to keep the crows away from the crops is actually a good idea. But obviously Daryl had an emotional response to that and shot it.

I mentioned this in my analysis of the trailer, but there's also a walker in the city, sitting next to the car, just like Rick and Daryl during their “you’re my brother” convo. Not sure why they put this in here, except perhaps to be a little ironic because Daryl and Rick are at odds right now.

I couldn't help but notice a "flip" theme. When Jerry passes Daryl on the bridge, he says, "Clearing the rally point, dude. See you on the flip.” Later Rick and Michonne pass walkers in the city and then flip around and come back to kill them. The writers talked a lot about a literal “flip the script” kind of thing for this season, which we’re hoping means we’ll see Beth. But I feel like they were incorporating this into the episode as the theme.

 (The walker Michonne kills when she “flips” back around is the one that was sitting by the car, reminiscent of the “you’re my brother” convo. So maybe symbolic of them returning to stuff that happened in S4?)

When they ride into the city, there are some signs behind Daryl. Before I got a chance to look at them very closely, @wdway identified three different signs with Ps on them. 

That mirrors the PPP card Tara found when Heath disappeared in 7x06. 

Because we know the Whisperers are coming this season, I still think this probably points to them. Which would mean that Heath is with the Whisperers. Either way, this foreshadows something. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Inside the Capitol building, I was reminded a lot of the compound Rick and Daryl found Gracie in in S8. Mostly because there was so much white and wood interior. Because it was darker inside than out, it also had the Grady lighting going on. It also reminded me a bit of father Gabriel's church and the Big Spot, mostly because TF sneaked around and explored quietly with guns. It just gave me S4/S5 vibes.

Ways in which this episode parallels 4x01:

1.Them entering the Capitol felt a bit like the Big Spot.

2.When Ezekiel fell through the glass floor, it looked exactly like the walker who came through the roof of the Big Spot. (And combine that with Breaking Glass Theory).

3.The “B” painted over a 30 mile-per-hour side. It felt like Beth and 30 Days Without an Accident.

4.Similar but opposite. In 4x01, there was a herd of walkers overtop of the group (at the Big Spot). In this case, there was a herd of rockers underneath the group. In that case, a walker fell through the roof. In this case the human person fell through the floor. You can see the parallels, but it's also sort of opposite. Which adds to the flip the script theme.

5.What happened with Siddiq felt like an echo of what happened to Zach, just with spiders added. (Another opposite: Siddiq didn’t actually die but Zach did.)

6.We saw wooden barriers with spikes around the communities, just like the prison.

7. In 4x01, Zach saves Bob. Here, Ken saves horse.

8. Villain mentioned but absent. In 4x01, it’s the Gov. Here, it’s Negan. Sort of backs up the theory about how they’ll replay the sequence from 4x08, but this time Negan will take the Gov’s place, Rick may take Hershel’s place, and Beth will take Rick’s place.

9. The Daryl/Carol scene. These have been mentioned by others previous when this scene was released as a sneak peek, but to recap: A) Daryl and Carol hanging out and talking casually. 2) She says “stop.” I think in 4x01 it was him that said it. Either way, the line was said. 3) She calls him Pookie. I don’t think we’ve heard that at all since 4x01.

When they find the seeds, the packet says Rattlesnake Snap Bean. 

It’s a real thing. As far as I can tell, they’re kinda like green beats but longer and thinner with dark streaks that make them look like a rattle snake. (Source) Hence the name. But this is an example of them specifically using that brand. I mean, they could have shown tomato seeds or something, right?  And when was the only time you saw a rattlesnake? In Still.

Michonne looks at a “More Perfect Union” poster, but it’s specifically about the conflicts that led up to the formation of the country. This is obviously a foreshadow of conflicts coming this season, and it probably foreshadows Michonne's leadership.

During the scene where Ezekiel falls through the floor, there's lots of emphasis on people's shoes and boots. It's probably at least in part because they’re showing that the floor is rickety, but we saw a lot of boots in this scene. It jumped out at me.

I said yesterday that I was nervous about Ezekiel maybe dying. After reading spoilers for next week, I'm already less worried. It occurred to me that Zeke falling through the floor COULD foreshadow his death. But the he didn’t actually die here, and I didn’t see any specific death omens. Rather, it was just a close call. If this does foreshadow something, I would say it foreshadows him almost dying, but in the end he’ll survive to make out with Carol for another day. ;D At least, that’s the hope.

Ken said, “Shoeing these horses is a full-time job.” This reminded me of @frangipanilove’s theory about hoofed animals, especially horses, and shoes.

I thought it was really funny when Carol refused the ring. She was being such a girl. At that point. "If you’re gonna propose, do it right! Not on back of a horse!” 😆😆😆

Rosita said something interesting when they discovered the broken bridge. She said, "two other herds merged into Sylvia, so now it's even bigger.” She also said that they took out the walkie repeater on the bridge went out.

It's interesting to me that they're naming herds now. There obviously tracking them and trying to manipulate their pathways. Sylvia means “forest” or “spirit of the wood.”

A repeater for the walkers helps widen the area that can pick up the walkie talkie signal. And that’s been taken out. So their communications have been somewhat compromised. This definitely qualifies as part of the Communications Theme.

After Ken dies, we once again seen a 8:20 clock. Remember that last season, we saw one, particularly in Rick's Old Man Coda. I was originally just going to say that this is still in play, and while we were wrong about it pointing to episode 8x04, obviously this symbolism is still important.

Then I sat and thought about it for a minute, trying to make connections. Remember, Rick's Old Man Coda was actually Carl's vision of the future. In that vision, he saw Negan being a part of the community and making nice with Rick and teen family. I do think they will eventually move toward realizing that vision. The clock could be to show that they will be moving toward Carl's vision as a way of honoring him this season.

But. Remember THIS POST in which M-Nonny discovered that the opposite time (10:10) represents famous people who were shot and killed. So doing 8:20 may represent someone who was shot and lived. And y’all know I think Carl’s death and Beth’s return will be related. And then there was the Phoenix behind Carl. So, I know this isn’t at all definitive, but it's a symbol I'm definitely keeping an eye on.

I thought it was funny during Rick and Daryl’s convo that Daryl said, "We can't make enough corn fuel to run the cars or the trucks." Notice that there was no mention of not being able to run the RVs or his motorcycle. LOL. I get that smaller vehicles take a lot less gas, but it's just a convenient way for the writers to allow him to keep riding his motorcycle, even though there out of fuel. LOL.

The whole charter vs constitution thing was interesting. For the record, a charter is something issued by a sovereign (king or queen, which kind of reinforces the whole 4 Queens theory, btw) while a constitution is written by the people. So for right now, Michonne and Rick are just telling the people how it will be, rather than having them come together and agree on their own rules. Not exactly sure why this was included, but it’s interesting.

With Gregory's death, they might have been specifically doing an antiparallel to Randall in S2. Remember in my Opening Credits Analysis, I noted there was a noose in the barn, and it reminded me of F almost hanging Randall. It also obviously foreshadowed Gregory's death.

I don't disagree with Maggie’s actions (let's face it, the dude really had to go). I do think they’re trying to show that Maggie is becoming a little too dark and brutal for it to be a good thing. So, in S2, TF almost hung Randall, but didn't. Here, Rick and Michonne didn't think Maggie would really hang Gregory, but she did. Maggie is taking a dark stance on things, not unlike Daryl, and it's not entirely healthy.

A few more small details and I’ll shut up for today:

There were tents set up in the Capitol building, which reminded me of the ones on the sky bridge in 5x06.

Oh, and this walker is wearing a sweater that looks just like the one Beth wore in the Bethyl hug scene in 4x01.

There were red umbrellas in the background when the spider walker grabbed Siddiq. Kinda like the red umbrella we saw in 7x16? It’s a Red Object which, once again, probably represent red easter eggs/resurrection.

Right in front of that is a sheet that reminds us of Daryl and Beth putting the tarp over the Rick Bitch walker in 4x12. And it’s yellow! Just so many callbacks.

I haven’t mentioned Xs, but they’re all over: the crucified walker at the beginning. The boat Daryl and Cindy get is resting on wooden Xs. The glass floor has grids, so either boxes or Xs, depending on how you look at them. A vent under one of the Natural History tarp that’s full of Xs. If you just look for them in the episode, you’ll find them everywhere! (X Theory).

I think it's all the details I have for right now. Tomorrow I'll analyze the lyrics of Eldon’s song. Anybody see anything I missed?

POTA110618 - Crushed

According to Lady Stormbanner they were following in the same footsteps as the previous group that had come seeking to solve this mystery. This was of course by design for the most part, although Banshae did not know they had also requested aid in the construction of a raft. There were certain parallels she hoped to avoid drawing between themselves and the previous group. Namely the “never to be seen again part.”

“Interesting group.” Flea rode his horse up upfront alongside Elora and Banshae, the former following the trail, the latter maintaining the same empty stare she wore most of the days he’d known her. Save the last 24 hours spent at Summit Hill.

“I wouldn’t mind visiting again on our way out.” For once, his ancestors were quiet, so Flea took the opportunity to think out loud for himself. Not necessarily looking for any kind of response. 

“Assuming we make our way out.” Elora offered a joking smile, a joke Banshae appeared to be unamused by.

“As long as we each give our best and work together. In the end the gods are responsible for our fate.”

“I was just making fun.”

“She doesn’t do ‘fun’ or haven’t you noticed?”

The look Banshae shot Flea was more of hurt than anger. Almost embarrassment. “I see no fun in the prospect of death.”

“Oh come on, you’re telling me you didn’t enjoy yourself the least bit letting out some frustration on ‘the Lord of Lance Rock?”

“I held no personal stake in that. No individual ill will. It was merely a matter of duty.”

“See? No fun.” Flea chuckled to himself.

“Leave her alone, Flea. So she doesn’t revel in wanton blood. I’m none too keen on that either. You going to lean on me too?” Elora offered a light punch to the half-orc’s shoulder, like scolding a sibling.

“I’m not talking about wanton blood. I’m talking about taking a little joy in your work.” He turned back to Banshae, his tone a bit more respectful.

“You’re a soldier. You obviously have someone on top you look up to. You’re trying to tell me you don’t feel the least bit satisfied at the prospect of serving?”

Banshae thought for a moment, expecting to have to fight for an answer from the void. To her astonishment, it was revealed to her almost instantly, as if by reflex. A warm sensation swelled in her breast, and her chin lifted. Was this pride?

“I serve justice. Justice is an idea, and ideal, not a man or a woman. Although I answer to one I consider greater than myself, it is because they more greatly represent law and order.

“By serving justice, I feel like my life is given purpose and meaning...and yes, feel satisfied in fulfilling that purpose.”

“Well spoken.” Behind them, Dion offered a solemn bow of his head.

“Fair enough. I just like hitting things.” Flea shrugged.

“Hah, OK.” Elora smiled into her chest, only the slightest shaking of the head perceptible by anyone nearby.

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“That’s such a cop-out. Right alongside the gold standard ‘I’m just in it for the money.’“ The high elf turned, her eyes glittering in the sunlight. “I should know, I used to say the same thing.”

“Alright then, enlighten us as to your higher purpose.”

“That’s my business, and I’m not asking you to divulge in yours. I’m just saying. Don’t go and try and tell us you’re just some thug with an axe. We all know better than that. If that were the case you’d be with them instead of riding with us.”

“She’s a bright one, that one.” Aunt Lenore floated up next to Flea’s left, her massive arms crossed in front of her barrel chest. She had a look of approval about her that worried him. He knew what was coming next.

“She’d make a good mate.”

“Ugh, let’s not start that again.” Flea batted away at the air in a feeble attempt to disrupt the bothersome spirit even though experience told him it was a futile effort.

“Start what again?” Elora crooked an eyebrow.

“Nevermind...can we talk about something else?”

The fording of the river was not so much difficult as it was time consuming. The raft they had constructed proved sturdy and took to the waters well, however was nowhere near large enough for a single trip. With Banshae and Flea keeping watch on either side of the river, several trips were made to bring the horses over carefully two at a time. They were trained well, and were not skiddish of the waters that rushed underneath their hooves. For this all were grateful, as it was they would have to make camp before the final trip was made anyways.

Dawn broke with a warm breeze that smelled of tall grass and fresh water. Elora watched aghast as the rest of her party took to the river in the morning eagerly. Splashing the cool waters over their faces, drinking deeply and gladly. Gods only knew what was in that water. She was quite content to drink from her water skin for now and would bath when the waters offered were hot and clean.

While she waited, Elora bent down to examine the fading wagon tracks sunken into the riverbank. They were faint, a few more days and they’d disappear entirely. As it was, it would be difficult to track. Difficult, but not impossible, at least not for her. Bathed and refreshed, the rest of her group mounted up and fell in line behind as Elora slowly walked her horse along the path following the barely perceptible divets in the earth.

The day dragged on slowly, with nought but bush and tree alongside for landmarks. The afternoon sun eliminated all shadows for a few hours, forcing them to halt. Without the hint of darkened contours, Elora was blind to her next step. With the return of shadow, they recommenced their trek into the afternoon as the sun slowly sank below the treeline. The sky erupted into a brilliant hue of orange and purple just as they had rounded the next bend to be greeted by the same riverbank they had set out from that very morning.

“...by the nine Hells.” Elora cursed herself, immediately looking down to the dirt to find the tracks she saw so clearly not hours before.

“Is it just me or did we just to a complete circle?” Miv’s voice hinted a mild annoyance, but it was Banshae Elora was more concerned about.

“Sorry, the tracks were faint as it is. Probably got turned around somewhere.”

“You think?”

“It’s fine Elora. Nothing to be done about it now.” Banshae dismounted with a heavy sigh and cast a glance into the setting sun. “We’ll start fresh in the morning.”

Something, perhaps instinct, tickled the back of Flea’s head. Carefully as to not draw too much attention, he scanned the treeline around them. Around him he saw his ancestors floating about their own business. Chattering among themselves, telling the same stories they’ve already told countless times over. He tried to look past them, into the brush. Although he saw only green, he had a suspicion it hid something more.

“Don’t get in your bedclothes just yet. We’ve got company.”

Sure enough, as he pulled he weapon at the ready a rustling of leaves and snapping of twigs sounded from all around them. Figures emerged from shadow, behind trees, as if spawning from the forest itself. Strange figures in strange garb he noticed. Netting and turtle shell, crab claw and shark teeth. Humans, and some strange kind of orc with a bluish skin. Commanding over all, a lithe humanoid covered in barnacle and inked skin. His eyes the color of sea foam.

“Perceptive they are. If only they were able to recognize who’s territory they tread. This all may have been avoided.” His voice reminded them of the coast during a storm, dark and roaring.

“Who’s territory might that be?” Flea sized the thing up, he could take him.

“The children of the Crushing Wave, those who recognize and worship the power of the sea.”

Banshae’s eyes were fixed elsewhere, a symbol carved deeply in the shell armor that encased the majority of the humans. Although it was clearly not the symbol of those who had taken the lives of her brethren, it stood out in her mind as familiar nonetheless.

“We have no quarrel with you. Leave us in peace, lest you give us good reason to draw arms.” She already knew their answer, but something inside her compelled the warning nonetheless. Rules of engagement. The honor and conduct of war.

“I’m afraid it’s far too late for that.” The barnacled one made the slightest of gestures with his hands and in an instant his underlings had begun their attack. The air was filled with the twang of bow strings, shafts buzzing like angry wasps. Mercifully few found their target. The things that appeared like Orcs produced a strange kind of magic, tossing stagnant spheres of water through the air that exploded in a putrid stench.

Miv ducked past each one, moving like a hummingbird, nought but a smeared image and a whisper of sound in the fading light. Drawing closer to the crowd, jagged swords slashed and cut at him. Within the wooden blade, dozens of serrated shark teeth had been tied with gut twine. It bit and tore into his exposed flesh, creating massive gashes that wept blood.

His ancestors with him, Flea flew into a rage. Everything became red, and his weapon became like an extra limb. It was an extension of his body, lashing out with the added strength of generations of proud warriors. Beside him, Banshae belched forth a cloud of frost, sending her foes to their knees in a deathly chill. She found herself smiling, thinking of her earlier conversation with Flea and Elora.
