hi friends !!! my name is pixie and i'm here with this sunshine to throw at you, i unfortunately don't have a page set up yet because the procrastination demon has gotten me, but i'll put most of his basics and background here, along with some wanted plots for him under the cut !! <3

jianyu (prefers to go by jihyun if he's not close with the other) is back as a language counselor for the fifth year!

before being a counselor, he had a few years as a camper here under his belt. he actually has this camp to thank for how he's able to speak korean as fluently as he currently does.

if you were a little bit too obsessed with him, you would know that he attended camp for the first time in 2015, but did not show up again for the 2016 year.

it was at this time he found out some harrowing news about his family that changed his entire outlook on life, so the jianyu that came back in 2017 was much more rough around the edges and eager to cause a problem - always acting out because he enjoys the attention, and he especially enjoys hurting others with his words.

for better or for worse, he's dedicated to coming back to this camp as a counselor for as long as he can. there's always enough drama to keep him interested, and enough work to keep his mind sharp.

frenemies with han minjung, and her death has shaken him up quite a bit. he knows there's something *off* about it, and off about the letter in his luggage, but he's sure it's fine ... right?

personality wise i'd say he's a bit regina george, a touch of elle woods, and a dash of heather chandler to top it off.

now for wanted plots !!

i would love for him to have a new frenemy connection, someone he plays nice with in front of the campers but in the back of his head, they are competing. what they're competing for can be plotted more in depth!

an ill advised hookup who jianyu is embarrassed of, and said hookup probably isn't having a good time due to a cute lifeguard's posessiveness over jianyu. he gets a kick out of watching them squirm.

confidant !! one of the only people at camp he's *truly* let in. they've seen all sides of him, even the terribly ugly sides. someone who can knock him down a peg when his ego has gotten too out of control.

Boys Planet | Episodes 5&6

Finally, the second round of performances. I thought that the bad performances would have stopped in round one. However, here we are with more bad performances. I'm mention them from least to most liked by me, so keep that in mind.

Vocal + Rap

#4 Not Spring or Cherry Blossoms - I expected a shit show, and it was okay? I Chan did good here, his voice was really pleasant, but I don't think any of them will survive.

#3 Limousine - it was fine. Their voices were good together, but nothing much tbh. For this team too, I don't think any of them will survive

#2 Man in Love - I liked it a lot. It's weird how Taerae looks like Seokhoon, could have fooled me that he was Taerae's dad hahahaha. Is it weird that, although I'm not voting for him, I want Tae Rae to make it into the group? I think that one Taerae will survive from this group

#1 Tomboy - everyone already sort of expected this performance to be good, and it was. Props to Zhang Hao for placing first, but Gunwook was better over all (but I may be biased as he is my one pick). Everyone will survive and Gunwook will make it to top 9 and he will stay there (saying it to the universe).

Vocal + Dance

#4 Feel Special - I knew that it was going to be bad, but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Woongi carried the whole performance on his own and still didn't manage to get first place because, like I have always said, Koreans vote with their asses. The guy who placed first, I don't care enough to look for his name, was terrible in every sense of the word. He got to perform the song he wanted, feel special was his pick from the moment it was announced, and he didn't even try to pull his weight. The amount of anger I have towards this guy is not even funny. I swear to God that if I see anyone saying "he has to debut" I'll pick a fight because dude can't dance, can't sing and isn't a team player so what the fuck does he want. Woongi maybe has a chance to survive, but indont think any of the others will

#3 Butterfly - the dancing was good, as expected, but the vocal part fell short. Everyone will likely get eliminated

#2 Home - this was a very hard song to cover, seventeen sings very high, and their dances are really hard. I really like Jong Woo, I hope that he can make it all the way to the final, and if he makes de debut group I won't be angry. I think Yunseo (?) Will probably be eliminated but I hope not.

#1 Love Killa - only placing it as number one because they had no issued vocally and their dancing was good. But I would easily place home as number 1. Seowon is in risk on elimination.

Dance + Rap

#4 Rush Hour - it wasn't bad, but it also wasn't good either. I don't know. It felt like they went on stage because they had to, and that was it. They didn't look like they enjoyed it at all. I know that there was some evil editing, but some stuff weren't either, so their lack of teamwork made the whole stage sort of fall apart. Most likely, only Ricky will survive.

#3 Zoom - I thought that whoever got this song would have to work extra hard because it's not the best, you know, but they managed to make a fan stage and they really looked like they were having fun. I love Keita so much, I hope he makes it to the final lineup (it looks like he will, considering the current ranking and how much people seem to like him). Keita and Haruto will for sure survive but the others, probably not.

#2 Gang - ah this fucking meme song but they did so well. Junhyeon is so funny, and he didn't want this song at all but managed to do a great job. Seunghwan, too. He got the song no one wanted and turned it into something great. I love it. Seunghwan may survive, Junhyeon too.

#1 Law - to me, the best performance of this round. I hate how that stupid master has been crushing Yujin from episode three and how the kid looks like he's about to throw up every time he sees him but he's sooo good with his dancing and he can improve I'm his vocals, yes, but he's going through puberty so his voice is yet to change. Yedam was so good, Hanbin was great, Wang Zihao gets no screen time although he is possibly the best dance in the whole fucking show and it pisses me off. I hope he survives. Yujin and Hanbin and the only ones I'm certain of.

I want to briefly mention the ranking from last week and the 12th place announced from today.

Taerae made it into top 9 but Hui dropped out of the top 9 and that worries me. I don't think he will have the same arc as Yujin and he won't make it into the final lineup. I think a lot of people voted for him as a filler vote.

Jiwoong also dropped a little in ranking. However, he is still the top 9. I think he also may have had a lot of filler votes

Jay is no longer in the top 9. He dropped to 12th. Like Hui and Jiwoong, he probably got a lot of filler votes, but now that things are narrowing down, he lost those votes. It happens. If he dropped, there's a chance Gunwook will be in the top 9.

I will never shut up about Gun Wook in this show, okay? I want him to make it, so just deal with it.

Sky (Love in the Air)

Sky was dealt such a shitty hand in life and I'd do anything for him to be happy for the rest of it. Killing Sky's ex for instance! Though Prapai would have gotten to him way before me so I wouldn't have to worry about going that far 😅

Uea (Bed Friend)

Very similar to Sky; Uea deserves so much better and if anyone tries to hurt him, you can meet me in the back of the Denny's parking lot.

Look... I'll be honest... it seems like I have a type when it comes to fave characters... Slightly fem guys with a hard exterior (usually because of trauma) and with devoted (future) boyfriends who have no problems submitting to them. On top of that they're usually characters that would be stereotyped as bottoms but don't have the stereotypical virginal innocence and seeming aversion to sex but instead own their sexuality, no matter what kinda kinks it involves. (honestly if you list any character in BL that fits this description, you've made a list of my favourite characters but that's for another time 😅)

Both Uea and Sky fit this description perfectly and as such I have sworn to protect them and their honor! 🗡️🛡️

Seeiw (My Only 12%)

I adore Cooheart and I really connected with his portrayal of Seeiw. It's probably the closest a BL character has come to my own queer experience so it really just resonated with me. On top of that, him and Cake are just the cutest so of course I'd fight anyone who has beef with Seeiw.

Li Ming (Moonlight Chicken)

He is just such a darling! And him and Heart's story was for sure my favourite in this show. They were such cute baby gays and I'd wanna protect them from all the negative parts of the world so bad.

Zouey (Playboyy)

Zouey is one of my current darlings and every episode I'm hoping the show doesn't do him dirty.

To me he is a perfect example of someone who would like to have sex, just in less conventional ways, but so far none of the other characters are shown to be very accepting of this which makes me worried for his future in the story.

All I want is for him to be allowed to want and experience the kind of sex he wants without feeling like he needs to give more than he wants and I would fight many many people (Teena, his whole friend group, the writers of the show etc) for that to happen.

Him and Teena could have some of the hottest and most fulfilling sex if Teena just got with the program, understood that penetration isn't the end all be all of sex, and let Zouey take the wheel.

Jaewon (The Eighth Sense)

In his case I don't need to just fight people (admittedly fictional people but still...) but also his own depression and survivors' guilt. If he wasn't already in therapy, that would be the first place I'd send him.

Don't get me wrong I'm very tempted to hunt down his old "friends" and give them a good talking to because they are some shit friends but I think Jaewon needs more support from people than for his old pals to get beaten up so I'll leave them be... For now!

Sun Bo and Hao Ting (History 3: Make Our Days Count)

These two are some of my absolute favourites when it comes to BL characters but also friendships within BL. They're just such lovable himbos who are down bad for their respective future lovers while also being such good friends.

I'll admit every time I see someone say this show is bad I kinda want to throw hands but then I have to remind myself that taste is subjective and even if this is one of my absolute favourite BLs, it might not be everyone's cup of tea. I guess I'll just have to throw hands with anyone in the show who wants to harm these two sweethearts instead of fighting with people on the Internet.

Anyways, go watch this show!!

Jom (I Feel You Linger in The Air)

Jom has been one of my favourites of 2023. He is just so tired of the situation but still just keeps going and caught himself a lover boy in the process.

He might not have trauma like Sky and Uea but he still fits my fave type of character pretty well so it's fair to say that he has my sword. And he has my bow... And my axe... Am I funny yet? 😄

Was actually thinking of reading the book because the show was so good but then I read someone say that the book ending was very similar in terms of vague hand waviness but maybe I'll read it while I'm in Thailand.

Name (Remember Me)

This show had such a good start and seemed to be going some really interesting places but then it slowly fell apart and Name was one of the characters who suffered because of this. He deserved so much better and I hope so badly that Title (the actor who played Name) gets a role in something else that's better because he seems to have a lot of potential.

Honerable mention to the characters I'd throw down for but who definitely don't need it: AiDi (Kiseki: Dear to me), White (Not Me the series), and Ayan (The Eclipse the series).

大家好! We're experiencing another covid wave; my bad body aches started on Wednesday and worsened on Thursday. The company doctor gave me 2 days' medical leave and told me to continue testing so I did, all the way till today (it's Sunday here) and.. negative, i.e. it's the flu. I didn't feel like cooking; instead, I microwaved shrimp wanton soup noodles and made lazy girl instant ramen. Pour boiling water into the bowl, cover for 3 minutes; divide tau kwa into 2, open a can of braised peanuts and another of peas and carrots, add them to the noodles and voila!

My flu became full blown on Friday and lasted till yesterday. Finally, the sneezing fits went away; I'm left with a mild fever and body aches. There're no words to describe the contentment from tucking into steaming hot, velvety mee pok (flat yellow noodles) and QQ fish balls in a clear, tasty broth right now - pure comfort in a bowl when I'm feverish and shivering. Apart from watching baby pandas, sleeping a lot and eating delicious noodles, I followed the news of war between Palestine and Israel. Hopefully peace will return soon.

We've had yum yum teen (dark skies) and some rain this week so the craving for soup noodles was especially strong. Home to the best soups in the world, Asia offers a variety of steaming hot, delicious comfort foods to keep us toasty warm as we enter the rainy season. Still, food remains much more expensive than it used to be. Being able to chi de bao, shui de hao (have a good meal and good sleep) is a blessing and, for some, a luxury. This week, my thoughts are with the homeless and rough sleepers globally as this region enters the rainy season.

Living standards have dropped worldwide and we ought to think whether some expenses are necessary. Do we need that artisanal coffee when local brews are just as fragrant at a lower price? There're people elsewhere in the world who'll soon have to brave the elements during winter, with nothing to shield them from the bitter cold apart from tents, if they're lucky. Family, close friends and I count our blessings that nutritious meals are still within our budgets and there's a roof over our heads. We're blessed to have local coffee joints like Ya Kun, Toastbox and Fun Toast offering high quality brews at affordable prices and we should support them.

My elderly folks are cooking more at home and I encourage them to. This way, they can afford fresh vegetables, seafood, fish, meat, eggs and tau kwa (firm tofu), which they turn into many nourishing meals. I'll continue to support local food businesses that charge their customers fairly; if push comes to shove, I'll also make more meals at home for WFH lunch. After all, we got used to this during the covid lockdowns so it isn't that bad. 下次见!

So can we take a second to talk about He's Coming To Me. I couldn't help but just feel good after watching it. Ohm and Singto made me laugh, cry, and everything in between. They were so soft and sweet with each other and the whole cast was great.. However, when Thun came out to his friends and him mom I was an emotional mess. It was handled so beautifully and let Thun be truly vulnerable which was so nice to see. I saw on one of your posts that your goal is to get everyone to watch Seven Days and honestly both shows left me feeling the same warm way. Anyway, it got me thinking, what are some of the other great coming out scenes in BL?

WE CAN ALWAYS TALK ABOUT HE'S COMING TO ME!!!

It's a fantastic BL that just never gets the recognition it deserves. Such a good story and wonderful acting. I mean, come on, there isn't miss in the whole cast. It's GMMTV at its absolute best.

(If you haven't seen them, different tenor entirely, but 3 Will Be Free and Great Men Academy are the other 2 of Thailand's forgotten golden children. Precious gifts of beautiful story + killer casting.)

I couldn't agree more. HCTM has one of the most dramatic and best coming out sequences in BL. it's AWESOME. In the gym. With the dropped balls. The symbolism of it all. Gah. And with Thun’s mom? So good.

Suddenly I feel compelled to go watch episode 6 all over again. It was this episode that made me fall in love Ohm's acting. (And I’d seen Dew & MIR already.) 

I happen to be one of those queers who fucking adores a good coming out scene. But honestly I really like the supportive parent ones the most.

So let me think, some of my favorites off the top of my head.

BEST Coming Out Sequences in BL

Okay so I think we can all agree that He's Coming to Me is the best. *holds up hand* no contest, but there are other really good ones.

Arthit in SOTUS in front of his friends with his arm over Kong shoulder. ALSO in SOTUS S in front of his coworkers. I just a love a grumpy tsudere being “yeah, he’s mine, I’m gay, deal with it.” 

Dean in Until We Meet Again kneeling in front of the grandmother he's never met before, explaining that not only is he gay but that history is repeating itself and he will absolutely not let it end badly this time around. And then bringing her long lost brother HOME to meet her? OMG I tear up just thinking about it. 

Pete's dad. I mean, who doesn't love Pete's dad in the Kiss series?

DBK has to be up there as one of the best long form roll outs of coming out. (More realistic in my experience.)

I thought Golden Blood’s PitchBank coming out to the girls was really cute. 

Tein’s coming out to his bestie in Tale of Thousand Stars was great too. I don’t have a screen grab but I wrote about it at the time. I can’t remember the character’s name but White plays him, which was fun given the last entry on this list.  

Can publicly kissing Tin in A Chance at Love in order to shut his sister up is probably the most outrageous version of coming out. 

I love Shi Lei coming out to his mom in Be Loved In House: I Do. 

The only one from japan I really like is in Life: Love on the Line. Both characters' coming out sequences are so different and we know why, as a result, only one of them ever had the courage to live honestly.

HIStory 3 the bL that shall not be named has a GREAT friendship coming out sequence. Where Bo Xiang comes out first, and then Hao Ting is like,

I am well aware it has been years but I am STILL BITTER. I’ve had breakups that wrecked me less than this show did. 

Let’s see, Korea isn’t big on coming out sequences. But in Light on Me the bit where Shin Woo tells the story of his first crush to Tae Kung in order to make him feel better after his heart got broken, and says, sort of softly, 

“It was a boy.”

Is basically a coming out moment and I LOVE IT. 

And one of my first favorites, of course, is Noh’s friends basically dragging him kicking and screaming out of the closet in Love Sick.

Normally I wouldn’t like this kind of exposing behavior, but they all know, and Noh knows they all know, and they’ve been running a long con just to get him to be honest with himself and then they are all SO CUTE and teasing and supportive about it. It’s adorable.

Every time I see a "Wei Wuxian isn't morally gray!" post I kinda want to interpret it as "He's morally black!" Because the alternative is to believe that so fucking many of you read "Wei Wuxian forced Wen Chao to self-cannibalize his legs" and went "this is a morally white action because I like Wei Wuxian and I don't like Wen Chao and also Wen Chao was mean first" and like literally drive me to despair that I share a fandom with so many people who think that's completely okay because Wen Chao was a bad guy so any level of harm to him is justifiable.

Saw a pic that reminded me of my favorite head-canon-i-forget-isnt-canon for TGCF.

Hua Cheng chose the San Lang form because that's how he wishes he looked when he first met Xie Lian. Like, Xie Lian is 17, a prince, an amazing martial artist, dressed in the finest robes in the kingdom of Xianle which specifically esteems luxe stuff. And fucking Hua Cheng has to meet him as a ratty little bandaged boy who just fell off a building. Way to fuck up the meet cute huh?

So when he gets a second third fourth look ive lost count okay chance to meet his idol he's had 800 years to imagine how he wishes it could have gone. And he ends up having two competing fantasies:

Fantasy 1: the suave mysterious stranger who sweeps Xie Lian off his feet and leaves him wanting more.

Fantasy 2: the sweet good-looking boy next door, about the same age, knowledgeable enough to impress this prince who's strengths are physical and social.

And Hua Cheng, being the extra ghost king he is, decides - ¿porque no los dos? - and enacts BOTH those fantasies.

Shaman King 2021 Episode 27 Thoughts

*SPOILER WARNING* - although at this point, if you're still getting spoiled from people's posts like this then just read the manga...

Ayt, so Ren is my favorite male SK character (Hao doesn't count because he's the main villain or arguably the main character of the show, more on this maybe when we get to the end of the series, so no spoilers for that right now), and as such I have to talk about episode 27, because... well... OBVIOUSLY.

Now I remember when I first read this in the manga, and I thought there was no way they were going to kill Ren, one of the main and most popular characters (side note: back in the day, they did character rankings and released the results in each volume, consistently the top characters were Hao, Anna, Yoh and Ren, but I digress). But I do remember the sense of dread, and I genuinely wondered if Takei really would kill Ren off, at least until I read the next chapters.

SO, on that note, I am so so so glad that the directors of this episode decided to leave it as a cliff hanger. Will Ren actually die? How will Horohoro and Chocolove survive this when they're cornered and seemingly hopeless? And the parallel of the badass girls on the other side of the mountain, cherry on top. FINALLY there is some real tension being built up that isn't immediately resolved. The tension is allowed to build in this one. And yes I am aware that the problem with the pacing of the earlier part of the whole series is most probably because of the dismal episode count that they allotted. I've actually been saying that over and over, that the pacing will probably only suck in the beginning, and I'm so glad to be proven right. Well, it's only the first episode of the season, so it might be too soon to celebrate, but this first ep of season 3 is definitely a good prognosis.

So I can't wait for anime-only fans of SK to watch this episode (especially when it comes out on netflix, although only god knows when that will be). We've deviated so far from the story of the 2001 anime so it's very exciting for me to see how anime-only fans will react (who at this point have no way of knowing what the hell is going to happen next). It's so great. I'm all for it.

AND AND AND!!! The next episode's title is Yoh's decision or something like that, and us manga readers all know what that means. We know what's coming in episode 29 or even at the end of episode 28 if we're lucky.

It's the moment I've been waiting for since the first episode of the reboot aired. And I can't. I'm so hyped. I'm sorry if I sound like a broken record for all y'all who actually read these thoughts. And if you don't know what I'm talking about OR if you do have an idea of what's coming but you still haven't read it in the manga, I'm sorry if it sounds like too much hype and it doesn't live up to your expectations.

But IDK, man, I feel like even if it IS a disappointment animation-wise and pacing-wise, I'd still be over the freaking moon to see it animated. It's like getting a thing checked off of my bucket list.

So yes fellow manga-fans (especially fellow Yohna fans), in just a couple of weeks we're finally getting Osorezan. Let that sink in.

Ahh i screamed in happiness watching the livestream for the performances like I liked them all, can we talk about cowboy svt though xD this still makes me giggle like out of all the outfits, stylist said "yehaw carats" but most important of all *slams hands on tables* WE GOT PANG STAGE PERFORMANCE!! my fav song of svt ever and it was performed with hao and jun being back, i wanna cry.

And svt confirmed for rythym hive!! And ngl I feel a bit...meh? Now don't get me wrong, I am happy after 3,000 years we finally got the boys in a music game again but I am not that much of fan of the recent updates to the game. So the game plays similar to the superstar games, imo It is still tricky of a game because they have an extra hard mode and introduced how you want to see the notes appear (aka they dissappear at the end so you have to go by memory in tapping or similar to superstar where it kinda appears faded at the beginning) but many game features is just confusing to me? Like the big thing the game sells is you play against others in real time and not true. Its bots, same way as the Mario kart game on your phone. Takes actual usernames but has bots. So you might be thinking is there a ranking system? Like in superstar where you go up the levels. Yes and no. At first they didn't have that but they added one yet it is pointless to me? So you have a ranking and can see the top 100 players and you can get rewards but there is no ranking to say go up (i.e gold 2 to gold 3) like it just resets. There isn't like a reason for me to really play, I liked the superstar ranking system because you get this excitement for moving up especially when you upgrade cards or get better with songs. And th card system, oh my God it is confusing. Now it functions the same but their last big update switched things around a bit. Cards are done in order like in superstar for your group but you legit cannot view them by newest so good luck trying to find the new cards you got. But to upgrade these rare voice cards, you are supposed to collect these mics and even If you get the materials, no guarantee you get that special rare card. Then there is this card collector progress system that Is confusing because despite I get new cards for said collection it doesn't go up so I am confused. The biggest con for me is they separated artist. Instead of keeping all of them like in superstar, to view others you have to go into settings and change your fav artist and I do like svt plus other hybe artist so I have to take more time to collect stuff for that artist one by one. It makes sense in theory if someone plays for one artist like svt but not so much for multifans. Now not all is bad. Superstar improved say getting icons. All you need is diamonds and viola, got a cool icon you like. Getting cards seems easier, upgrading seems easier. The gameplay is similar, some Beatmaps are identical to the bts one I played. They do get time to get used to but easy to hop on. The svt update brings in a new addition of a diary (?) So things may change.

ooh I appreciate your breakdown, I've been curious how rhythm hive stacks up to superstar, since I've only seen some bits and pieces of people talking about it. and I didn't really want to download the app until svt is actually added. i feel like difficulty is somewhat subjective so I feel like I'll just have to see myself if i like that aspect of it, but that's so dumb about the bots and the ranking :/ tbh if it's like that i'd almost rather not have a ranking system. i also really liked superstar's ranking, because it motivated me when i was playing it a lot. the only thing i didn't like about superstar's ranking system is if you didn't play it put you down a rank. I kind of wish superstar's system was more like duolingo's where if you log on and play but don't rank high enough, then you go down, but if you don't log on for that week then you just stay at the same rank. but i digress kdjfg

that's really interesting that they separated the artists like that. with any rhythm game there's going to be people playing it who are mostly interested in one artist and those who are interested in multiple. so from the developer's perspective you'd think they'd find a way to balance that, but it seems like they're just catering to people interested in one artist. superstar's setup seemed like more of a balance, I mean it definitely encouraged you to play the other artists with the missions, but if you were only there for one artist there was nothing stopping you from just playing that one artist. you'd also think rhythm hive being set up like that is to hybe's disadvantage. i feel like rhythm games are a great way for people to discover new music and artists under the same label, it's good for marketing if used right. like ssp was how i ended up listening to a lot of nu'est, after school, and orange caramel songs for the first time, and i started listening to their discographies a lot more after that. personally, i'm pretty much only interested in seventeen on rhythm hive for the time being, i might have played some txt songs too if they were more accessible, but it's not a huge turnoff for me. but it's definitely interesting to me that they did that bc it doesn't feel like they're catering to their full userbase that way

the update bringing a new feature is another good point, rhythm hive opened up what, last year? it's still a pretty new app and there may be updates in the future that fix some of the complaints. it's just annoying because... a lot of it is stuff that we already had with superstar. we had to wait a whole year almost after ssp shut down for svt to even be added and on top of that we have to wait and see if some of the features on the new app will be updated/improved. not to mention we don't know if/when other pledis artists will be added. anyway... i've said all this before, i don't need to keep running it to the ground dfjfg

hi! this isn't supposed to be ship or character hate, I'm just genuinely having a conflictual time reading 2ha. i'm on chapter 60 (so obviously I'm already pretty invested lol), but how do people get past the fact that cw is in love with a 15yr old disciple? maybe I'm just not at the part in the novel where that is somehow justified (i know he doesn't DO anything to moran, really its vice versa, but it's still kind of the thought that counts). does this q make sense? rly not supposed 2b hate!!

Hello anon! Thank you for your question. I think this is a morally gray point and surely will be one of the most common criticisms levied at 2ha, especially once it gets big when Hao Yi Xing is released. Some people would definitely classify Chu Wanning’s love for 15-year-old Mo Ran as very clearly immoral. I don’t love the minor thing due to my own ethnic Asian but Western-raised perspective, but I can kind of see why Meatbun made this decision. Keeping in mind how Chu Wanning was written as a character in the context of fantasy ancient China, I have a few thoughts on this. I tend to ramble a lot, so here is my word vomit:

1. Modern Western age of consent vs. classical norms. I think it is worth examining our own understanding of various constructs of the modern age, including the age of consent. It is no surprise that there was pretty much no such thing as an age of consent in the past; for women, it was whenever they started their period, and then they were eligible to marry. I think it is great that we now care a lot about age of consent; there is an enormous differential of power between a relatively young person and a more established, mature person, and knowing what we now know about prefrontal cortex formation (continuing until roughly the age of 25), it is good that we establish some boundaries. However, there does seem to be a mismatch between the biological point at which we are counted as fully mature and what we consider to be an appropriate age a person can be eligible for guilt-free sex. The age of consent is arbitrary to the point that it still varies in many parts of the world. What is considered immoral varies depending on context. Meatbun wrote 2ha following an established tradition in wuxia novels following the norms of that world. In the world of ancient China and especially fantasy ancient China, the fact that Mo Ran is a minor will not make anyone blink an eye. What is very scandalous, however, is that Chu Wanning is his teacher. One of China’s most famous wuxia stories, the Return of the Condor Heroes, features the love story between the protagonist and his female martial artist master. It has been some years since I returned to this story, but I am 99% sure that the disciple Yang Guo was a minor when their relationship began. Even removed from the Eastern world, Western classical traditions also extol the virtue of the erastes/eromenos sexual relationship. This does not mean I am saying it’s ok for someone to be attracted to whom we consider minors if we just move everyone to a historical setting, but we also have to be critical about how future generations will look back at our current norms and how we, too, will become abhorrent to them in some respect.

2. Chu Wanning as a person and the concept of love. The xianxia world of cultivation seems to de-emphasize the concept of sexual love even as sex itself is widely acknowledged as a method of cultivation. However, dual cultivation is also thought of in-universe as an inferior technique of cultivation, with self-cultivation held to the highest standard, meaning abstinence (I cannot find the reference for this, sorry, but probably somewhere in Book 1). I do not read Chu Wanning’s attraction to Mo Ran as sexual at all in book 1. [minor spoilers] Chu Wanning was raised by monks in a removed temple at the top of a mountain [/minor spoilers], and sexual desire is considered taboo and suppressed. Chu Wanning was so successful at this suppression that he quite simply does not even think about sex or sexual matters until [minor spoilers] book 2, when Mo Ran is much older and way hotter [/minor spoilers]. I think for Chu Wanning, the love he feels for young Mo Ran is romantic and protective, in that he would do anything to keep Mo Ran safe, puts Mo Ran’s interests above his own, and is quite divorced from sexual interests. One may note that every romantic touch between Chu Wanning and Mo Ran at that age was initiated by Mo Ran himself, and Chu Wanning just kind of sat there in shock, and if he did take comfort in those moments, I can’t really blame him with the heavy amount of seemingly unrequited love going on. Chu Wanning saw a spark of something pure and good in 14-year-old Mo Ran when Mo Ran first became his disciple, and through their time together, the spark only grew stronger and fueled Chu Wanning’s love. I don’t think Chu Wanning considered Mo Ran as a sexual being, nor did Chu Wanning consider himself a sexual being. Until book 2. Also, a re-emphasis that it is just so arbitrary that an adult having feelings for a 17-year-old is not ok, but it’s fine when that person turns 18, which leads me to...

3. Thoughts vs. actions. This goes into a philosophical slash kind of religious point about at what point does sin begin, at the thoughts level or at the actions level. Chu Wanning quite clearly believed it is the former. He suffered tremendous guilt over his love for Mo Ran because Mo Ran is his disciple, even if everything I said about the age thing did not count. The master-disciple relationship in ancient China is as sacred as the father-child relationship. There is a famous idiom, which goes “One day as a teacher, a lifetime as a father,” signifying how well this relationship is valued under a Confucian system. Flash forward to 1984 and the thought police, and then taking into account how Meatbun is writing this novel in censorship-happy Communist China, I think it is a pretty deliberate choice on Meatbun’s part to make Mo Ran’s starting age in the novel below the 18-year-old threshold of acceptability. Do we condemn Chu Wanning for what is in his heart, unvoiced, or for what he does? For all that Chu Wanning pines for Mo Ran, what he ends up doing can only be seen as virtuous. Even if someone reads his love for Mo Ran as sexual, does it negate what he chose to do instead? Contrast this with Nabokov’s treatment of the narrator in Lolita, which is a clear example of abuse. Chu Wanning loved Mo Ran at all ages, through all stages of both of their lives; it is not a fetish for him to seek out youth. It just so happened that Chu Wanning met Mo Ran at that point in both their lives. Overall, I think the moral judgment of Chu Wanning’s feeling is up for each reader to answer for themselves.

With all that said, my own context is that I’m a woman in my late 20s with relatively little trauma history raised within both the Sinosphere and “the West,” and so my experiences reading this novel and my own understanding of the characters and their motivations are colored through my own lenses. I am of the opinion that literature (I don’t think I’m being too generous in saying that 2ha counts as a piece of literature) should challenge your perception, expand your horizon, and get you to think critically about what you are consuming. Of course, I would prioritize your own mental health and safety if reading this novel is traumatizing to a more serious degree than feeling conflictual about the subject matter. Thank you for the very thoughtful question. It really helped me work through my own feelings about this pairing and Chu Wanning as a character.

Ranks and Rank Insignias of the Northern Federation of Sevkra

The following are the rank and rank insignias of the Northern Federation of Sevkra (and also the Elensian Empire, but the insignias are slightly different and there isn't as many ranks, especially for warrant officers and commissioned officers). I will not be including uniforms today because that's a project for a later date. Note: the complexity of this system is due to the fact that in the NFS the military is highly integrated into society and government jobs like medical, judicial, education, etc are apart of the uniformed services; additionally, the longer lifespans of the Viishy allow for a longer progression of ranks.

While used interchangeably, Pay Grade and Rank are different terms. Pay Grade is the numbered “step” on the ladder of progression that indicates seniority, experience, and how much the individual is paid. Rank is the specific title and general duty of the member in question. For example, if a person has the Pay Grade of O4, they can have the Rank of First Officer, Aiding Officer 3, Major, Pilot First Class, or Flight Leader.

Enlisted Personnel

Enlisted personnel make up about 80% of the armed forces and 40% of the other uniformed services. They are individuals who either signed a contract of service which has to be renewed once the contract expires or have been drafted. Contracts are come are 6, 9, or 12 years long while conscripts are obligated to perform 3 years of service every 9 years.

Enlisted personnel are individuals trained in a specific field and are expected to become experts in said field. Upon achieving the rank of E4, they start accumulating more responsibilities and managerial duties as they advance through the ranks, now considered non-commissioned officers. E9-12 starting to become more office-oriented and more or less advisors to commissioned officers. E13+ are seen as the experts of their field (usually multiple fields) and function almost purely as managers. However, this system breaks down with the second line (inverted) of ranks; these enlisted personnel remain specialists in their field and do not gain office nor greater responsibility than the people in their direct chain of command. These members are usually in combat or maintenance roles. Conscripts make up the majority of the members with these ranks.

The third row is for special roles. E6-7 (CMN and JRH) have more responsibility and authority than other members with the same pay grade. E14-16 special roles are advisors to commanders and also act as HR to the enlisted members under them.

The fourth row is for the seniormost enlisted member of a base or ship.

Warrant Officer

Warrant officers are in between enlisted and commissioned and act as extremely specialised individuals who hold no command over anything larger than a fire team (4-12 individuals) and who's job requires specific training that can't be covered by an enlisted member, such as flying troop transports, being a comms officer, or being a technician in a field. They make up ~2-5% of the uniformed services. Unlike the enlisted who are employed via contract and COs who are commissioned by the president, WOs gain a warrant through parliament.

Special warrant officers are very different, however. They usually are commissioned officers (but can be NCOs) who are appointed by the president or a marshal and whose original ranks are then classified. These individuals are almost always plain-clothed and have no rank insignia, though they are authorised to wear any rank they choose as long as it doesn't outrank their perceived rank. Perceived rank is based on their direct commander’s rank and their SWO rank. The formula is [commander’s pay grade]-7-[their pay grade], meaning if a SWO3 is working under a ship captain (O7), they have the same authority as a second officer (O3). SWOs are extremely rare and make up less than 1% of WOs, so many people in the NFS military don't know how to treat SWOs. These individuals usually work in combat roles in special or black operations or as the personal assistants to marshals as marshal-selects (see below).

Commissioned Officer

Commissioned officers are individuals appointed by the president who act as managers and commanders in the uniformed services. They are highly educated for their roles and are held to high standards and make up about 18% of the armed forces and 55% of the rest of the uniformed services.

The first row is for general officers. These individuals gain most responsibility as they progress through the ranks, eventually gaining command over a ship (craft larger than 50m and having multiple sections) at O7.

The second row are the specialty officers. These ranks are in three sections: aiding officers, service officers, and executive service officers. These officers are given titles (as seen below the insignias) rather than an actual rank (e.g. O7A is “Service Officer 2”, but the title of “Doctor” will always be used if the officer in question is in the medical field). In this row O5 has two separate ranks — the second one (HAO) is given command over other O5s and below. Below O7-9 are the specialist ranks; these act like the inverted enlisted ranks where these officers hold no command except maybe a handful of other individuals and solely focus on their field (if it helps, Dr. House would be an RO3). These officers are always considered junior to officers of the same pay grade in the fourth, third, and first rows (in that order).

The third row is combat officers; these officers serve commanding roles for smaller units and have responsibilities only to their men. their commanders are almost always an officer from the first row.

The fourth row are pilots. O4 has two ranks with the second acting as a commander of 5-20 other pilots. O5 commands 2-6 flights (40-120 pilots). O6 commands 2-5 squadrons (150-600 pilots). Since each ship carries about two wings’ worth of people pilots who are promoted past O6 naturally progress to ship captains. Due to combat and flight experience, these SCPTs are considered the best and most competent commanders to have.

The final rank is the O16 rank GANM which is actually considered a M4 rank (see below). This individual is the commander of the entire uniformed services and is appointed the position which they hold for the length of the presidency (12y); however, once appointed no one but the other M4 marshals can remove them from office prematurely.

Marshal

Marshals are but military and civilian positions placed at the very top of the social hierarchy. I wrote about them previously but the gist is that marshals out rank all military and civilian positions. In the NFS there are only 438 marshals: 431 M1-3, 1 O16M, and 6 M4. The 6 titan marshals and the GANM act as the oligarchs of the NFS, holding absolute political power as well as acting as the commanding body of the marshals. The GANM is the only marshal that is designed to be temporary, acting as a titan marshal for 12 years.

Marshals act as commanders of highly specialised units or act as solo agents. It is possible for SWOs to have a perceived rank of marshal is they work directly underneath one— this is the case with CSWO Varik who is considered a chief marshal since he works directly under a grand marshal.

To become an officer you need at least 12 years of experience as enlisted and 12 years of experience as warrant and/or commissioned officer. If the individual came in as a warrant officer it's 12y WO and 12y CO, if they came in as CO it's 12y CO and 12y WO (requires a pay cut). Marshals are either elected to the position in a general election, elected by the marshals, or hand-selected by the titan marshals, but only when there's an opening in their ranks. Marshal-Selects are people slated to become marshals, these individuals are given the rank of CSWO and assigned to a M1 marshal, meaning their rank is “below” M1 but still above any other military officer.
