prompt: how did you propose 🥺   /  @vanamc
they’d been talking about it getting warmer for weeks.
at first, the weather had been unpredictable. the frost had remained. the water remained frozen, and he’d allowed himself to drown in their routine. he hadn’t even noticed april sneaking up on them.
now, he is being pulled along, heavy camera bag slung over his jacket, tripod in one hand, her hand clutching the other, threatening some sort of forfeit if he didn’t keep up; one taunt or another about him going soft, being out of shape, through a new hiking route he’d mapped out long ago. the trees are already green, birches. the light dapples through them, and grant sheen to the outline of her hair like a halo.
it’s perfect, she says eventually when they reach a spot that fulfils some creative formula she must have created in her mind’s eye. she starts talking about the colours, how the natural light hits the landscape perfectly. gold would blend with green and meet the sky.
he hasn’t said a word yet, but his voice has had plenty of use.
there is a knowing glint in her eye. she can probably recognise the look on his face by now, from the way he’s watched her this whole time. his quiet is his gracious amusement. she’ll think he is letting her have her fun, before the inevitable light bullying. there won’t be bullying today, he is enjoying the way her face lights up when she talks. he could listen to her talk forever.
like a willing photographer’s assistant, he sets up the tripod, per her instructions, while she takes sophisticated snaps of her own. she won’t know, that when he sets up the camera, he also sets a timer. she won’t know, how perfect this spot really is.
he hopes she will still think it is.
he approaches where she stands for the test shot and slowly pulls her to him.
his lips make contact with the beauty mark near her upper lip. such a simple little natural feature, that somehow gives another layer to her beauty. a little dot of skin that refuses the consistency of her complexion, insisting on darkening to a rich deep brown, calling attention to her every smirk. a spot to outline a smile, to bring every eye down from hers to catch a glimpse of it. and if you are someone so privileged as him, you’d see it from this vantage point, close enough to feel the very slight ridge it makes.
he’d expected nerves, but there is not a single ounce of doubt in him.
“ hey, ”  he says finally, the right side of his mouth pulling further to the side.  “ i brought the last of the champagne truffles... in my jacket. take them out for me ? ”  he holds up his bare hands, and makes a show of stiff frozen joints. the gloves had come off for the camera,
her eyes meet his when her fingers close around the square box, close to the warm core of his chest where he is sure she can also feel his heartbeat. cold hands close gently around her wrist, which he uses as an anchor, for when he lowers to his knee after she opens the box. “ i’ll follow you anywhere... except to my mother’s reading club. and you’re usually right, my home won’t look nice without you, you have better taste, even when i make fun of your choices in towel patterns. when you’re around, i demand more from myself in a way i didn’t think i would, for my people, for my family and myself. ”  he had, tried to memorise a mental script, he’d rehearsed it for someday, on and off over the years. none of this had featured in the scenario he’d auditioned in his mind.  “  i thought i’d have some romantic film line planned for this moment, but... stay with me. we’ll work out what we want. together. i love you. please marry me ? ”

Ok fine, I caved again. Originally I said I’d at least attempt to not kidnap @shamedump‘s boys again, but their boys are so sweet (and also have to convenient distinction of not actually wanting to hurt their little reader buddy). Dumpling gave me the green light so with their blessing I’m going ahead with Shy’s final prompt for spoopy hide-and-eat with the Bad Sans Gang using Dumpling’s version of the spooky boyos. I hope I channel their personalities adequately, and I hope you guys enjoy!
Movie night with they guys was always a highlight of your week.
You all met as Archer’s castle on a regular basis to just hang out, piling into one room. Thank goodness this was a whole freaking castle, because your gang was pretty big. Despite the size of the room, the couch really wasn’t big enough for your whole group. As per usual Chain, Mage, Dusty, and Mason were crammed on the couch leaving Deca and you to nest on the floor. The plethora of cushions strewn about made that a non issue, luckily. Crash had made himself a hammock out of his own strings overhead, knitting a scarf absently as the movies served as background noise. This week, the reason the seven of you were sprawled over the couch in the first place was the horror movie marathon going on the TV across the room.
You turned away as the blood curdling screams shrieked from the speakers, the delightful sounds of the hot blonde being torn apart by the feral werewolf on screen acting as your backing track as you cried “Oh come on! That’s just gratuitous!” You laughed, entertained by the campiness buried in the gore but still refraining from watching until the wet squelches subsided.
“you ok?” Chain asked, looking you over. (You didn’t miss Mage glancing over at you either.)
“I’m good. Having a good time, but so not looking forward to the nightmares tonight.” you respond, flapping a hand as if to waft away the concern.
“scared of horrible monsters coming to get you in the night?” Mason teased, abandoning his spot on the couch to push at your shoulder and attempt to loom.
Despite the blank sockets and black tears, the goof didn’t scare you so you laughed easily. “Not like that, and you know it. Stoppit.” You started to push him off, which made him double down on the game and try to knock you over into the pillow pile.
Mage broke up the game before it turned into proper rough housing, wrapping one tendril around your waist and another around Mason’s ankle. He yanked you both off the floor, chiding “enough, you two.”
Mason ended up limply hanging upside down, clearly unabashed and jokingly making grabby hands at you.
To prevent further childishness, Mage dumped you into Chain’s lap and dropped Mason into the thickest portion of the pillow pile.
You giggled when Chain wrapped himself around you, setting his chin on the crown of your head and purring about the newfound proximity.
Deca spun around to look at you, “you get nightmares after scary movies?”
“I mean yeah, but it’s a price I’m willing to pay for a good time.” You shrug, as best you can while wrapped up in Chain’s arms.
“Y-y-you know you’re just about the best guarded human-n in the multiverse, right?” Crashed asked, setting hit knitting aside.
“Yeah, I’m well aware that anyone who wanted to get me would have to go through you guys. My brain is just dumb.” You pat the skeleton wrapped around you as best you could, which in your position was patting the thick ecto on his middle since that’s all you could reach.
His belly reacted to the attention by growling, which you could feel while being pressed into it. You could practically feel the mischief coming off Chain as he said “well, i’m plenty willing to make that more literal if you want.” To emphasize, he licked your head.
You pulled away from the intruding tongue, and Chain let you tumble away from him and back onto the floor, laughing as you squealed about him being gross and trying to fix your hair from the huge cowlick Chain had gifted you.
You noticed Dusty quietly saying something to Mason, which was a pleasant surprise as Dusty usually preferred not to speak much if at all. You asked Mason what was up, curious what made the reserved skeleton speak up.
“he’s asking if i think you being taken in would help with the nightmares. so, would it?”
“Uh... dunno. Never tried it before.” You said truthfully.
“why don’t we try it out, then. but make it a game?” Mage asked, grin quirking predatorily.
“Game?” You asked, curious to see where this went.
“yes. you run, we chase. winner gets to keep you for the night.”
“Hah! Am I player or the prize?”
Mage shrugged, “both.”
You glanced around the room and saw several hopeful gazes and a few curious ones. Crash rolled his eyes and went back to his knitting, but you couldn’t deny the puppy dog eyes you were getting from some of the others.
“Alright, game on.”
-----
Crash made a seat for himself and another for Deca high up in the canopy of the woods by the castle, which would serve as your arena for the game. (Thematically appropriate, plus no one could tumble down unforgiving stone stairs.) Crash and Deca tapped out before the game began, neither of them really wanting a guest your size. The others still seemed gung ho, so they were on the forest floor with you.
You waved your flashlight around the area, already scoping out routes, as Mage explained that a victory meant catching you, no shortcuts allowed, and stipulations about magic to keep you from getting hurt during the chase. You kinda tuned it out, instead strategizing. Not like you had to worry about limiting spells you couldn’t cast in the first place.
You got a minute head start, and your heart was pounding as you ran. 60 seconds had gone by in your mental countdown, which meant you were officially being hunted.
You were mildly nervous, but far from afraid. You did try to tamp down on the nervous feeling and instead focus on your excitement about a new game. Hopefully a more positive feeling would be harder for Mage to track.
You weren’t left alone too terribly long, as Dusty had a habit of popping up randomly, forcing you to run away with him snickering behind you. You quickly caught on that he was just there for jumpscares, which made you laugh. You weren’t totally positive where the others were for now, though. That made you more paranoid.
The first time you actually felt the game was afoot was when Mason suddenly appeared on your right and made a grab for you. You dodged the grab, and darted in the opposite direction. Being chased by Mason, you almost missed the dark chuckle in front of you. Luckily you didn’t, as your quick turn saved you from Mage’s tendril’s snapping out towards you. The realization that the tendrils were significantly harder to dodge than Mason had been made you realize Mason wasn’t actually trying to catch you, instead herding you towards Mage.
The realization that Mason was helping Mage rather than himself wasn’t surprising, but definitely amusing. You had to dodge plenty more of Mason’s divebombs, and Mage quickly caught on that you knew what was going on and actually had to chase after you now as well, rather than waiting for Mason to bring you close enough for a grab. You heard Deca laughing from high above when Mason lunged at you but missed, ending in a face plant. Good to know the two non participants were still entertained. Given this opening, you took off yet again only to be stopped by Dusty springing from a shrub.
It was no effort to get away from him, as per usual. But how did he keep finding you so easily?!
Oh, Delta. It was the freaking flashlight! You realized the bright light was all but a beacon in the dark woods. Mason had given it to you, hadn’t he? Ooh, that cheeky little-!
Fine, you could use their trick against them. You jammed the light in the crook of a tree and took of running, leaving the bulb alight. The laughter from both Mason and Mage meant they’d found your trick, but you were far from your boobytrap and felt a sense of victory.
Your skeleton sightings became fewer now, and your night vision had finally adjusted to the dim light of the moon. But it also heightened the nerves instinctual for humans in the dark. You actually screamed the next time Dusty caught you by surprise, and while you backpedalled you didn’t miss the surprised look on Dusty’s face before you felt two solid somethings wrap around from behind you and lock you in place.
You wriggled with all your might out of a pure fear reaction but stilled when you realized two things. 1) The things holding you were big, thick arms. 2) The plushness of the body you were being held to meant it was Chain.
You looked up, breathy laughter tinging your words as you said “I only saw you once this whole game, but wow did you make it count!”
Deca shortcutted to the ground beside you, while Dusty and Chain chuckled at your outburst.
“figured ambush was the way to go. picked a spot and waited for the right moment, and dusty gave me the perfect window.” Chain explained.
“did you even know he was there, dusty?” Deca asked.
He shook his head, smiling wide.
Crash seems to have been the one who called Mason and Mage that the game was over, as all three approached in a group.
“well played, chain. and you did pretty well too, human.” Mage said as he approached.
Once the trio joined, the group was left in a loose ring and you still being held by the large skeleton who’d caught you. Conversation was immediate and comfortable, reliving some of the more lively moments and near misses with glee and laughing over mistakes made. After a bit, the chatter was cut by a rolling growl from Chain’s stomach which served as a reminder as to what victory entailed.
“well, the wager was already set. we’ll go set up the sleeping arrangements and meet you back at the castle. see you later, human.” Mage said, leading the others away and leaving just you and Chain out in the cool night air.
“you ready to get in your sleeping bag?” Chain asked, adjusting his grip on you at last to a more bridal style.
“Hah, yeah. Sounds pretty comfy to me.”
Chain smiled before gently fitting your head into his mouth while you went limp to make the next few moments easier on your host. Chain started swallowing with an easy, steady rhythm and you felt yourself relax in response. This was far from your first time being taken in by one of your skeletal companions so you knew the drill. It was with a happy sigh from Chain that you finished your downward journey and slid into the more open space of his stomach. The magic around you was mildly cool but comfortable, and the softness let you sink in a bit and feel cradled and safe.
Chain’s hand pressed in from outside to steady his newly added weight and you felt the light sway as he began to walk back into the castle. You began to rub at the surrounding walls in a successful attempt to get the monster to purr, and he even started rubbing back at you with your free hand.
He did you the favor of turning his magic transparent for you once you were back in the castle. He knew you preferred being able to see people if conversations were happening, and knowing how these nights went sleep wasn’t on the itinerary just yet despite the bedding being set up and pajamas being on.
Once you host had settled where he’d be sleeping, conversations flowed and jokes were made amongst the group with little difference from before despite your seating arrangements. Eventually, Mason approached and started to lightly pester you through the barrier of magic between you two. Chain seemed more entertained by the banter than bothered, but you hadn’t missed the black puddle that formed on the floor behind Mason.
A tendril emerged, wrapped around Mason’s ribs, and dragged him in. The satisfied look on Mage’s face would have clued anyone in the group in to where the troublemaker had ended up even without seeing him be puddled. Any nonexistent doubts also would have been dashed by Mage’s hand remaining on his belly the rest of the evening.
After a while, sleep was imminent and everyone settled comfortably strewn about Mage’s room. Mage and his internal guest were of course veiled on Mage’s four poster bed while everyone else was on various cots and cushions. Even without the luxury of a king sized mattress you felt exceedingly comfortable.
“doin ok in there?” Chain asked quietly.
“Oh, peachy on my end. How ‘bout you?” You kneaded at the wall the way you knew he liked.
He purred at your attentions, rubbing back as best he could from outside. “just wondering if this nightmare cure will do you any good, but i’m feeling pretty peachy too.”
“I will say, pretty hard to feel vulnerable in here. I’ll let you know come morning.”
“good. night, y/n.”
“Goodnight, big guy.”
You both settled in, and it felt like Chain falling asleep took mere seconds. You smiled fondly at the soft sounds of his slowed breathing and his body working around you.
As you drifted off, you couldn’t help but wonder if the chasing game would be played again at some point.
...
Maybe next week you could watch the sequel to tonight’s movie.

Unlikeliest Places
@pillarspromptsweekly fill 95. It’s another Roll for It, and my elements are The Living Lands, travel fatigue, and a beautiful natural vista. (also, crazy self-indulgent bc my birthday is this coming week AND I think this is my 100th prompt fill(?) so I wanted to have even more fun with it than usual.)
                                                        ---
Despite how much she loved traveling and adventure, Tavi did have to admit there were some not so great things about it. Like sore feet. And walking in the rain. She didn’t have anything against rain, per se; when she was somewhere like Caed Nua or an inn and it was her choice she loved to go for long walks and get absolutely soaked to the skin. But that was completely different from this--boots squelching with every step as she she and Aloth trudged down another road after another lead. It wouldn’t have been so bad if she knew how far to their destination. But road signs were apparently unheard of here, and the last person to give them directions had just vaguely gestured down the road and told them it was a straight shot of “a few miles”. A few miles so far was up to six by Tavi’s reckoning.
At least the Living Lands were more scenic than, say, the Vailian Republics. And all the flora and fauna was new and unusual. It made her regret never making it up this far before.
And then she stepped in a deceptively deep puddle and almost lost her balance. Would have if Aloth didn’t grab her arm.
Abydon’s fuckin’ forge, we better find somethin’ that makes this fuckin’ worthwhile  Tavi shot him a grateful smile as she shook muddy water off her boot. “Thanks. I’m gettin’ real fuckin’ close to wantin’ to talk with that orlan about the definition of the word ‘few’.”
Aloth chuckled. “In my experience, places this... provincial tend to use that as a catch-all for anything lower than about twenty.”
She snorted and raked sopping tendrils of hair out of her eyes. “You can say ‘backwater mudhole’ if that’s what you mean, Corfiser, no one’s here to get offended.”
He shrugged and rolled his shoulders to shake rainwater off his cloak. “Better not to take the chance.”
She shook her head fondly. “You are incorrigible, city slicker.”
Aloth snorted in amusement as he tugged his hood further forward. “And you’re one to talk on that score, Tavi.”
Tavi grinned despite the rainwater trickling down her face. “Pot and kettle, what a pair we make, huh?”
He actually laughed. “You could say that.”
“Or I could point out I think I finally see a town up ahead,” she chuckled. “It better be Stilden, or I really will go hunt down that fuckin’ orlan to have a few words...”
“Whether it’s the town we seek or not, I’ll be satisfied if there’s an inn,” Aloth pointed out. “Just getting out of the rain will be enough for now.”
“Heh, true,” Tavi snorted. “We can dry out while we try to figure what the fuckin’ Key wants up here. Untamed frontiers never struck me as their kinda place.”
“No?” Aloth raised an eyebrow as they drew close enough to see this was indeed a community of some kind. “With all the unexplored valleys in which to hide, the potential ruins waiting in their depths, and a high likelihood no one will question your disappearance--or others’ who poked where they didn’t belong--because meeting an unfortunate end is all too common?”
“Well, when you put it like that...” Tavi grinned, letting the words trail off. She nodded toward the only two-story building in sight. “That’s prob’ly either a tavern or a general store, an’ both’ll serve our purpose.”
“After you, then,” Aloth said lightly, tucking his hair back behind one ear.
“Yeah, ‘cause I’m the diplomatic one,” she teased, rolling her eyes.
“Perhaps not, but you are the forceful one, and I have a feeling that counts for more out here,” he returned.
From the sign over the door--the carven torrents of a splashing waterfall--Tavi was pretty confident this was an inn, or at least a tavern, as they approached.
The sight that greeted them when she pushed open the door confirmed that; the interior was full of tables(half of them occupied) and fairly tough looking folk woman stood behind the long, rough-hewn bar.
Thank fuckin’ Hylea, Tavi sighed. I need a drink.
Every eye was on them as soon as they stepped through the door. and she practically felt Aloth tense at the attention. Tracking down a Leaden Key cell usually relied heavily on keeping a low profile, and this was the exact opposite of what they wanted.
“Can’t be helped,” Tavi murmured, tugging his arm so he’d follow her toward the counter.
“I know,” he murmured back, slipping his hand in hers. “Doesn’t mean I have to like it.”
She squeezed his hand in silent agreement--at least out here no one recognized the Watcher of Caed Nua--as the woman behind the bar jerked her head toward them in greeting.
“Don’t get many travelers through here,” she commented, bracing her hands against the counter. “What can I getcha?”
“Whatever you have that’s strongest for me,” Tavi replied as she pushed back her hood, extremely aware of the drip trail they were leaving across the floor.
The barkeep nodded approvingly and raised an eyebrow at Aloth. “And you?”
He met the question with a tight smile.”I’m fine, thank you.”
“Whatever y’say,” she shrugged. “What brings you through Stilden?”
Aloth’s grip tightened fractionally on Tavi’s hand. She shifted her weight, brushing her shoulder against his as she replied, “We’re adventurers. An acquaintance mentioned there were plenty to be had up here.”
The barkeep snorted as she pulled a dark green bottle from under the counter and popped the cork. “Heh, this acquaintance would be right. You sure they ain’t also tryin’ to get you killed? We got more up here that’ll do ya in than any other country in Eora.”
Tavi laughed and accepted the freshly poured drink the woman pushed toward her. “Pretty sure, yeah. And I think we’ll chance it, either way. Danger just adds to the fun.”
The barkeep smirked. “Good attitude to have up here. Just don’t go lookin’ for too much fun or ya might might get in over yer head.”
“That’s good advice anywhere,” Tavi said glibly. She picked up the mug, smelling the alcohol in the drink before she had it more than a couple inches off the bar. She’d said strong and the woman had obliged. She took a good hard swallow and ranked it better than most of what she’d had in the Deadfire, even if it wasn’t the best she’d ever had.
She nodded appreciatively as she lowered the mug. “That’s pretty good.”
The barkeep grinned. “Thank ya, I brew it m’self.” She held out her hand to shake.  “Hilde.”
Tavi shook her hand and introduced herself. “Any other advice for increasing our chance of survival?”
“Don’t travel after dark,” Hilde said with a shrug. “An’ your best bet is t’ hire a guide if y’ wanna go explorin’. A good one,” she clarified, “who’s seen a lot of this place. Hey, Tarven,” she called across the room to a dark haired elf slouched alone at a table. “Skellen back yet?”
The elf snorted. “With the shit his group was lookin’ t’ find? We ain’t gonna see them for another month or two at least.” He tipped his head and gave Tavi and Aloth a meaningful look. “If we ever do.”
“They get the point, Tar,” Hilde said dryly. “You wouldn’t happen to know who is around, would ya?”
Tarven pursed his lips in thought a moment. “They could ask the Rook whelp, I s’ppose. He don’t do much guide work these days, though. His wolf’s too old t’ keep up on the long trips and no one who makes it this far into the Lands wants a short one.”
“Can’t hurt t’ ask,” Hilde retorted. “An’ he’s been roamin’ the Lands more’n three decades, I’d hardly call him a whelp.”
“He is in the scheme of things,” Tarven shot back, before locking eyes with Tavi, his ears dipping in mild irritation. “But I can tell ya where to find him, if you wanna gamble on bein’ special enough he’ll say yes.”
Tavi shrugged and took another swig of her drink. There was a note of something in there she couldn’t quite figure out, but it was really growing on her.  “Worth a shot. Worst he’ll do is say no, right?”
“Kel, yeah. There are some folk that would do more dependin’  on their mood.” Tarven straightened in his seat. “Now, he works outta his folks’ salvage business, so it’s a little ways outta town...” He beckoned them closer, and Tavi went, her drink in one hand and tugging Aloth along with the other. He followed just behind her without protest, though she could see concern in his eyes. She made a mental note to ask about that as they sat down across the table from Tarven so he could lay out the route to where they could find this guide.
o.O.o
It took a while to finally get some privacy; Tarven proved chatty, and Hilde even more so when they attempted to wait out the rain. When the weather showed no sign of relenting anytime soon, they caved and got a room.
“Alright, spill, city slicker,” Tavi said soon as the door closed behind them. “You’re so tense I can practically see your anxiety floatin’ over your head like a fuckin’ storm cloud.”
Aloth half-smiled at her attempted humor. “I’m simply concerned about bringing someone into our confidence who we don’t know.”
“Whaddya mean?” Tavi probed as she hung her cloak over the back of a chair to dry and sat down to start working off her boots.
“This guide,” he said. “I do appreciate improving our odds of survival, but how do we search for a fanatically secretive cult without tipping him off to what we’re doing? There’s only so much we can explain away with the adventurers cover.”
“What’s so wrong with tippin’ him off that we’re lookin’ for someone?” she shrugged. The stubborn boot finally came off and she started working on the other one. “Obviously he doesn’t need to know everything, but what can it hurt tellin’ him we’re... shit, lookin’ for evidence of an ancient guardian order. We can just leave off that we think they’re still around and fuckin’ with the course of history.”
“Because we don’t know how large a presence they have here,” Aloth replied, absently raking his fingers through his still-damp hair. “For all we know, this Rook fellow could be one of them. Even if not, who’s to say he wouldn’t answer any questions put to him regarding our business, whether for compensation or simply due to not having a reason he shouldn’t?”
Tavi snorted. “If you’re gonna be that fuckin’ paranoid, maybe I shoulda used a fake name, Engferth.”
He shot her a dirty look for that, but she saw the corners of his mouth twitch.  “Tavi, it’s been two years, are you ever planning to let that go?”
“Nope,” she said cheerfully, kicking her boots under the edge of the bed. “It’s too much fun givin’ you shit for it.”
“That’s the answer I was both afraid of and expecting,” Aloth said with a long suffering sigh. He was smiling as he joined her on the bed, however. “The benefits of aliases aside, we really do need to decide if we’re going to employ this Rook, and if so, how much we tell him.”
“Look, city slicker,” Tavi turned so she was half-facing him. “I know we’ve survived everything from town drunks to cultists to the fuckin’ gods themselves, but I didn’t survive all that to get eaten by a fuckin’ lion or some weird plant b’cause we were too paranoid to take advantage of local knowledge and experience.”
He shot her a dubious look. “A plant?”
She shrugged. “Y’hear things. Rumors’n shit.”
“I... highly doubt there’s any truth to that one,” Aloth said diplomatically.
“Better safe than sorry,” Tavi insisted. “I say we hire the fuckin’ guide. You can decide how much we tell him,” she conceded. “You have more experience with the fuckin’ Key than I do.”
Aloth mulled that over a moment, twisting one of his rings while he thought, before nodding. “That’s a fair compromise.”
“Great. Then I’m goin’ to bed,” she grinned, wriggling out of her pants and kissing him on the cheek. “B’cause walkin’ in the rain and mud all day is fuckin’ exhaustin’.”
He chuckled. “I’ll join you shortly, there’s something I want to check first.”
“If you wait too long, I’ll be asleep,” Tavi warned playfully around a yawn as she snuggled in. She hadn’t realized how tired she was til she said something, but she really was exhausted.
“I’ll just have to take that risk,” Aloth said with a smile as he pushed off the bed.
o.O.o
Tavi’s suspicions proved correct and the night was at least half over before she felt the bed shift as Aloth settled in next to her. But he’d never needed much sleep, and the lack of it didn’t have a noticeable effect on his mood, so she didn’t tease him too much as they prepared for the day.
Aloth took all of it in stride--he was well accustomed to her habits by now--and waited until they were leaving the room to inform her that her hair had dried slightly curly.
“Oh, yeah, it does that sometimes,” Tavi grimaced self-consciously. “’Specially in humid weather if I’ve cut it recently.” Which was the case; she’d trimmed it less than a week ago. She sighed and feathered one hand through it. “Oh well. Nothin’ I can really do about it, so guess you get a peek at what I looked liked in my twenties,” she teased, pulling on her cloak as she stepped into the hall.
Aloth raised an eyebrow. “This is how you kept it back then?”
“Well, yeah, city slicker, I was workin’ for the blacksmith at that point, short hair was much easier to keep out of my fuckin’ eyes.” She tugged the door closed behind them. “An’ our part of Old Vailia got humid as fuck in the summer, so this is how it usually ended up.” She scowled at an ugly thought and kicked the wall. “At least until everything went to shit. There was a while in there I couldn’t cut my hair, even if I’d cared enough to.” Her gaze dropped to her hands, just in time to watch Aloth take them in his.
“Tavi,” he said softly, deliberately turning her hands so she couldn’t see her scarred palms. “I didn’t mean to bring up unpleasant memories.” His thumbs swept in matching arcs over her knuckles.
Tavi snorted a shaky laugh. “Shit, Corfiser, it’s almost forty years ago. I can’t expect you to walk on fuckin’ eggshells ‘bout anything that might bring it to mind.” She squeezed his hands appreciatively all the same. “B’side I walked myself into that one.”
“Still, I am sorry for bringing it to mind.” Aloth tugged her hands to close the distance between them and steal a kiss.
“Mmm, not that you need it, but you’re forgiven, Aloth,” she mumbled, smiling, into the kiss.
“You know how much I admire your resilience,” he whispered when they finally broke the kiss, foreheads still touching.
“Tough as fuck,” she agreed mischievously, freeing one hand to cup his jaw as she tipped her chin forward for round two, murmuring, “Just like you,” right before their lips met.
Gods, she loved the way his ears went pink whenever she complimented him.
“I don’t know about that,” Aloth demurred. “I’ve seen some of the things you survived and doubt I would have fared as well.” He cleared his throat. “But don’t we have somewhere to be?”
“Right.” Tavi brushed her thumb against his cheek one last time before stepping away so they could resume course downstairs. “Let’s go hire a guide so we can have an adventure with less risk of dying.” She laughed when he rolled his eyes. “Didja figure out what we’re telling him?”
Aloth nodded. “We’re searching for Engwithan ruins. It’s a large enough portion of the truth to serve our purpose, and still sufficiently commonplace to not raise suspicion. And given the connection between the Key and Engwithan culture, it’ll at least get us where we need to start looking. Between what we learned in the Dyrwood and the fact you understand the language, it’s more than plausible.”
“Also, if it’s leaked somehow, worst that’ll happen is the Key comin’ after us rather’n us havin’ to hunt them down,” Tavi added with a dark grin.
“I did consider that, actually,” he said dryly.
Tavi shot him a bemused look as they exited the tavern. “Covering all your angles?”
“Exactly.”
o.O.o
Tarven’s directions from the night before proved easily followed, and this salvage business equally easy to find. The walk was also far more pleasant now that it wasn’t raining and they could enjoy the view. There was a wild, untamed beauty to the land, even this close to a settlement, and she could see trails that meandered toward tangled forests and overgrown ravines. I really should’ve made it up here sooner, she mused. This place would be perfect for me.
But it she had, she wouldn’t have met Aloth or Kana or any of the others, or shit, even Maren and the rest of Silversteel. So she wouldn’t really change things. Besides, this place didn’t seem overly given to change, so it probably didn’t look that different than ten or twenty or even forty years ago.
“This place reminds me of you,” Aloth commented, almost as if he’d heard her thoughts.
Tavi snorted. “Stubborn and untamed?”
“And chaotic, and fascinating....” He nodded toward the sprawling vista off to their right, trees framing the view of sky and clouds, ground split by a red-rock valley. “Beautiful.”
“Now we’re talkin’,” she teased. “Shame I can’t think of anywhere flatterin’ to compare you to, city slicker.”
Aloth smirked. “You’ll just have to come up with something else, then.”
“Yes, I will, but later.” Tavi nodded toward a dirt path that wound off to their left, curving around a clump of trees before looking like it maybe, eventually, led to an indistinct shadow that might’ve been a house.
“Well, this just fills me with confidence,” Aloth said dryly.
“Why?” Tavi laughed, starting down the path. “He’s a wilderness guide, I”d be more worried if he lived in the middle of fuckin’ civilization.”
“Or what passes for it out here,” Aloth muttered, swiping at the tall grass that encroached on the trail.
“Be nice,” she  scolded playfully. “‘Specially since you just said this place reminds you of me.”
“Fair point,” he conceded, lips curving in a faint smile.
The indistinct shadow had started to take more definite shape now; a low, single story bungalow, with semi-neat piles of miscellaneous goods lined up along the sides. As they drew even closer they could see the figure sitting out front, a few feet away from the door. A blond elf, the sun catching both the reddish highlights in his hair and the silver-streaked coat of the wolf lounging at his feet as he worked. Tavi gave the longbow he was shaping a once-over, one brow arched in admiration. Bows might not be her weapon of choice, but she’d spent enough time with archers to recognize a well-crafted one when she saw it.
By now they were close enough for the wolf to catch their scent, and it lifted its head, ears twitching back, to alert the elven hunter.
“Easy,” he murmured, not looking up from his project to address them. “Help you?”
“Yes, we were looking for Kel Rook,” Aloth said. Tavi bit back a smile at the wary glance he sent the wolf. Just because Tarven had alluded to the animal getting old didn’t mean it was harmless.
“Found him,” the blond grunted, flicking a brief look at Aloth before returning to the bow. “But it’s just Rook. Why the interest?”
There was something familiar about his voice, in a way that set Tavi’s teeth on edge and squeezed something tight in her chest. She didn’t like the feeling much. Probably because outside Silversteel or her Dyrwood and Deadfire companions pretty much anyone familiar had likely tried to kill her. She crossed her arms defensively(as if that would help). “We’re lookin’ to explore around here an’ were told you’re a good guide.”
Rook frowned. “Damn Tarven,” he muttered, running his hand along the curve of the bow. “Were you also told I don’t do guide work often now that Fletch has trouble keepin’ up?”
“Maybe you could give it a fuckin’ try,” she returned, more irritably than she meant to as that nagging familiarity squeezed tighter. “We’re lookin’ for ruins, so we’re not gonna be movin’ all that fast, an’ we can handle ourselves, so it shouldn’t be too dangerous.”
“Everything here is fuckin’ dangerous.” Rook shot back heatedly, finally looking up to scowl at her with glass-green eyes. “I work best with an animal partner, Fletch ain’t up to it, and the pup I’m trainin’ isn’t ready yet.” He cocked his head and his scowl turned to a squint for a protracted moment before, “Have we... met?”
Tavi frowned. “Not unless you’ve been outta this fuckin’ jungle at some point in your life.”
“Not since I got here.” His brow furrowed. “Somethin’ familiar about you, though.”
Tavi crossed her arms tighter. That weird feeling was getting stronger and it was setting off alarm bells and she really didn’t like it. She shuffled a half step closer to Aloth and shrugged. “Well, I’ve never been up this way, so can’t help ya. C’mon, city slicker, if the man won’t do it, we’ll just hafta find someone else.” Someone who didn’t send spider-feet sensations crawling up her spine. Something about Rook tugged at her and whether it was from her own life or just more Watcher shit, she didn’t like it. She’d apologize to Aloth and explain herself later.
“But-” Aloth started to protest.
“Hylea’s tits, just-”
Rook caught a sharp breath and stood so fast the bow he’d been crafting tumbled to the ground and his wolf bolted up on shaky legs in case he was needed. “...Tavi?”
She froze. How...? She looked, really looked, at this naggingly, uncomfortably familiar hunter with his reddish blond hair and pale green eyes. The burn scars she hadn’t noticed before that trailed down his arm and up the side of his neck. There’s no fuckin’ way. It can’t be.
“What’s wrong?” Aloth whisper, protectively glued to her side.
Tavi shook her head. Nothing was wrong, just her world being tilted on its axis. Tarven had called ‘the Rook whelp’ Kel. No, Tavi, she scolded herself as she pictured the man in front of her thirty-odd years younger and with his voice a couple octaves higher and a ridiculous hope started to sprout in her chest, nearly four decades after the worst day of her life. They all died, all of them. Even him. It’s not... He can’t be.
But hope was a wild thing, stubborn as Tavi herself, and the name escaped in a breathless, unbelieving rush. “Khellin?!”
He nodded and the world screeched to a halt, fading out around the edges as she clapped her hands over her mouth.
“Oh, Hylea’s blazin’ feathered copper-fucking tits,” she muttered through her fingers. This couldn’t be real. She hadn’t really woken up yet, this was a dream or some shit like that. She bit the tender skin at the base of one finger hard enough she nearly drew blood. OW. Nope, not dreaming. FUCK.
Khellin--who was really standing there, she wasn’t dreaming--gave a strangled laugh that sounded more than half a sob. “Figures you still swear enough to send Mom into fits.”
“‘Course,” Tavi snorted shakily, dropping her hands. “I’m fuckin’ incorrigible, you know that better’n anyone.” Almost anyone, she corrected herself, darting a glance toward Aloth.
He was staring at her with wide eyes. He’d been there through enough occurrences of the relevant anniversary to know exactly the implications of this turn of events.
Khellin laughed again, this one closer to the real thing. “Can’t argue with that.” He ran one hair through his hair. “Guess it’s a bit of an understatement to say we have a lot of catchin’ up to do?”
It was Tavi’s turn for a shell-shocked, almost hysterical sob-laugh combination, because her brother was alive. He was alive and she wasn’t dreaming and what the fuck, whichever god she needed to thank she’d do it gladly because Khellin was fucking alive. “I think callin’ it just a bit of an understatement is an understatement.”
Forty years. She’d thought he was dead for almost forty gods-damned fucking years and he’d been here the whole time. I really should’ve visited the Living Lands sooner.
Khellin reached down to brush his wolf’s ears in a comforting gesture when he whined. “How ‘bout I change my answer, help you two find those ruins you’re lookin’ for?” he offered. “We can start the blazin’ long process of catchin’ up while we search.”
Tavi nodded, not even looking at Aloth to check. There was no way he’d deny her this, even if they hadn’t been planning to employ him before her own personal Godhammer had been dropped on the encounter. “Sounds like a fuckin’ plan. There’s just... something I need to take care of first.”
He cocked an eyebrow and she could feel Aloth’s curiosity as well before she crossed the distance in three swift strides and pulled her baby brother into a ferociously tight hug.
Khellin flinched and his wolf’s ears tipped backward, but he did wrap his arms around her after only a few heartbeats and hug back.
“Sorry,” Tavi whispered. She knew he wasn’t always thrilled with physical affection, she just couldn’t help herself.
“Don’t be,” Khellin mumbled, hugging tighter, his voice further muffled by her shoulder. “You’re an exception, always have been.”
Tavi matched his strength, still hardly able to believe this was happening, even though she could feel him, warm and solid and real. She finally, reluctantly, loosened her grip and stepped back, surveying him head to toe again. “I guess... I guess if we’re gonna travel while we talk we better get movin’?”
He nodded, glancing between her and Aloth before he bent to pick up the dropped bow.  “We should; it gets dark early if you’re under tree cover. And it seems you’re lookin’ for somethin’ special? Usually hafta go pretty deep for that.”
“Not today, I fuckin’ don’t,” Tavi grinned and Khellin laughed.
“No, I guess not.” His fingers brushed the wolf’s head as he turned to go lean the longbow against the bungalow. He ducked inside briefly, returning with a shortbow and quiver of arrows as well as a ration bag. “Preparedness is our chief virtue out here,” he explained, slinging both quiver and bag over his shoulder. “Let’s go find whatever it is you came lookin’ for.”
Tavi was pretty sure she’d be smiling for the next several hours at least. “Let’s,” she agreed, reaching for Aloth’s hand and weaving her fingers between his. She felt really good about their odds now. She’d hoped to find something worthwhile up here, and that had already been granted beyond her wildest dreams.
Surely they’d find something to work with; the Living Lands had all sorts of great things hiding in the unlikeliest places.
----------------------
I’ve been wanting to let Tavi find out Khellin’s alive for... I think like a year and a half? Maybe longer? And just never had the chance to do it, so when I saw the elements for this week’s prompt I had a MY TIME HAS COME moment and decided to do it now. Obviously at some point there’s gonna be a follow-up that’s them talking about what happened to each of them, woven in with Tavi and Aloth’s hunt for the Leaden Key. But we’ll just have to see when I get the chance for that ;)

What It Will Cost
((Content warning: this story contains brief but moderate violence and mentions of blood.))
***
He hadn’t meant to upset her, truly. When Darsamane had called his daughter down to visit, he had hoped to catch up, to express his worries, and if nothing else just.. plant the seed that maybe, just maybe, someone else could take up the mantle she’d given herself. He hadn’t anticipated how hot-headed he would become, but in the days that followed their argument he found he wasn’t surprised by it. The loss of Arathaer so many years ago had stung, but to some degree not as much as it could have. While Darsamane and his wife had worried for the two Farstrider boys, they knew that death in battle was always a risk. So when word reached them he’d fallen to Amani skirmishers, it was a terrible wave of grief that swept over them, but not one entirely unexpected.
But Eldwin’s death had been. At times now, Darsamane found himself cursing his own methods of raising his children. Perhaps if he’d taught them to be cowards, to respect authority over justice, maybe neither of those two boys would’ve enlisted.. maybe they’d still be alive. Maybe his wife wouldn’t have fallen to grief. And perhaps his youngest, his only daughter, wouldn’t be so proudly standing against an entire world at war, telling it ‘no, enough’. Those thoughts soon passed though, and lead him to feel only disgust with himself. What father wishes cowardice on his own children? He should feel pride, he thought. And he did. But more than anything else, he felt fear. Burying two children was enough- burying his wife was enough. He’d meant his plea to Altherei with every fiber of his being: please don’t make me have to bury my little girl, too.
He tried to follow the work of the Outreach closely, what little was made public. He knew she’d purchased land because Maelus had kept him in the loop, but he didn’t know too much more. Even if she had a small army with her- which he knew she didn’t- it wouldn’t be enough to assuage his fears. It was part of a parent’s duty to worry, after all, and while he somewhat regretted he’d passed on that trait to her, there was something deeper gnawing at him lately. Some sense of impending doom. It kept him up at night, and lingered in his thoughts throughout the day. It was tortuously non-specific, leaving him with no real idea if he feared the conflict between the Horde and Alliance was about to ramp up, if another of his children were now in mortal danger, or if he was simply so tired and weary of everything that it was finally starting to sink in just how bad things had become.
What had made matter somewhat worse was this: several days after his ill-fated argument with Altherei, Darsamane had started to get the sense he was being shadowed. It was little more than a passing concern at first, meeting unpleasant stares or the occasional brief jeer when in the city. He was somewhat outspoken about the war, himself. A man of science, he made no attempts to hide what the data made quite clear: constant, unchecked war was unsustainable for the planet and her people. He was well-used to dirty looks by now for saying the obvious. He learned several wars ago that the public wasn’t often fond of the truth.
But this was different, somehow. There seemed to be no real extended moment of peace where he could sit down, enjoy a cup of tea or a book, and not be quietly convinced there was something- or someone- there. Every little odd noise caused his ears to flick up sharply, even if it was naught but a breeze pushing a few leaves against the kitchen window. Even his sleep lately had been punctuated by strange, immobius fears that he could never place once he woke. Something was not right, yet he could point to no evidence to prove it. And ever a man of logic and science, he was able to at least partially convince himself his worries were simply getting the better of him.
It was after a relatively calm night, one largely free of night terrors, that he was slated to take a research trip. His group was one of many races, all fairly-well scattered about the globe, but when any made even something close to a noteworthy discovery, they all convened to discuss it, dissect it, and see what could be done with it. Sometimes it was a wash (usually it was), but other times there would be nuggets of useful data and information they could take back to their respective homes and continue to study. It was slow work, but ultimately their goals were noble and slow progress was better than none.
So it was one of these such discoveries that prompted a gathering of those like minds, this time the location had been set for Hillsbrad- not an ideal location per se but it was what was fairly easy to get to for the lot of them. It did mean passing through Tirisfal and Silverpine- what was left of them, anyway. Darsamane knew it wasn’t the safest route, but it was the quickest.. and besides, he was hardly a man of note. A thorn in the side of some pro-war fanatics, but little more than that. If they hadn’t tried to string him up or even bother to spit on him up to now, he thought it unlikely they’d do so now. And so, after a brief letter was penned to Altherei and her brothers alerting them he’d be out of town for a week or more, the trip began.
And largely, it was uneventful. He took a wide berth around what was once Undercity, keeping his mask on well until he’d made it to the border of Tirisfal and Silverpine- with blight, one could never be too careful. Even then, his passing into Silverpine was unremarkable, and he kept largely to himself even when passing by the usual undead patrols. It was only once he’d passed by the Sepulcher and was nearing the ruined wall of Gilneas that the creeping feeling of being watched slowly began to return. He halted his hawkstrider, and there was a brief skidding noise that ceased. He started to walk again, and he could hear quiet but distinct footsteps behind him. A few more moments of this and the old elf came to a slow, easy stop before speaking.
“Is there something I could help you with? I may be an old elf, but these ears still hear quite well,” His voice was soft and the words spoken with a bit of a breathy laugh, even if something didn’t feel quite right.
As he turned, he saw a decently-armored forsaken, clad largely in leather and some chainmail, approach from under a tree’s shadow. He was hunched, like all the rest, but what Darsamane couldn’t help but notice was just how completely he was covered- his elbows, his knees, fingers, toes- all of him but a bit of his rotted face was covered in clothing or armor. The forsaken slowly pulled a cloth bandanna away from his lower jaw- metal and screwed into the top jaw- to speak in a guttural rasp.
“.. I’ve been.. following you.”
“Yes, I noticed. For some time, I’d imagine- not just this little sojourn.” Came the reply.
The forsaken plodded forward. “.. Are you familiar with the Outreach?”
The closer the undead drew, the more little details Darsamane noticed- particularly a lack of obvious weapons. Despite this, Darsamane’s suspicion remained. He would be the first to admit he held no small amount of prejudice and wariness toward the forsaken, and it had only been amplified with Sylvanas’s recent actions as Warchief. He chose his words carefully, settling on a lie.
“The Outreach?”
“Come now,” The forsaken gave a brief laugh, though it sounded more like an odd rattle in his throat, “I know who you are. Darsamane Darkwind, the man soldiers love to hate,” He grinned, and while it should’ve been disarming, it was not.
“And yet I don’t know you,” Darsamane replied calmly, still atop his hawkstrider even as the forsaken motioned for him to come down to converse more readily. He held up his gloved hands, palms out.
“Forgive me- you may call me Marne. I.. do apologize if my shadowing has.. ah.. brought you discomfort. We forsaken are not… looked upon kindly, lately. Regardless of our own personal feelings.” He admitted.
Darsamane paused, considering the words. “You stand in opposition to Sylvanas?” He asked.
“You could say I find her methods.. distasteful. She tries, but… she does not speak for all of us.” The forsaken dipped his head, coughing once into a fist. “I can never be sure these days who.. who would prefer to see me returned to the grave before I can speak my piece.”
The old elf’s brows furrowed, and while he could feel his own prejudices chewing at his gut, his conscience prodded him forward. He slowly slid off his hawkstrider, dusting his hands together a couple times.
“You and those who think like you share that fear. It seems even disagreement is tantamount to treason these days,” He offered.
“Which is why.. I ask about the Outreach. It is your daughter’s project, yes? I’ve.. I’ve seen the flyers. I’m just.. not sure if I’d be welcomed,” His voice fell, as did his glowing yellow gaze.
“It is, and.. one that.. while I’m proud of her for being brave enough to lead.. as a father, I’m terrified. But.. if you find all this war as distasteful as you say.. I don’t think she would turn you away. Your people may be judged harshly by the actions of Sylvanas but.. I know my daughter. She tries not to be like the rest.” His expression twisted into a pained smile- one that Marne seemed to pick up on.
“You don’t seem proud- just terrified.”
Darsamane frowned. “I taught her those things- instilled those values in her. But now it’s those values I fear could get her hurt, or.. or worse. And … and I can’t bear that thought.” He admitted softly.
Marne was quiet for a time, gently rapping his fingers along the glove of his opposite hand.
“Do you think she’s afraid for herself?”
“.. I’d hope she is,” The elf spoke quickly. “She isn’t a fool. She knows there are plenty who would see her as a traitor, who would be happy to bring her harm just because she thinks there’s a better way. But.. if she is afraid, she doesn’t show it. She doesn’t let it stop her.” A small, fond smile crept back onto his features.
Marne was silent again, a low rumble from somewhere in his throat the only sound. He paced a little, turning his back to the elf to peer down the old path in Silverpine. “.. Traitors should be afraid,” He said simply.
Darsamane’s blood ran cold, “.. What did you say.” His fists clenched, but he’d barely gotten the words out before Marne spun on him, a brass-knuckled fist striking him square across the jaw and sending him sprawling on the ground. Marne spat just shy of the old elf’s face, delivering a powerful kick from steel-toed boots to his gut.
“I said traitors should be afraid,” He repeated icily. “Or are your ears not as good as you claim?” He hissed, and kicked Darsamane again.
The wind was forced from his lungs, and he wrapped an arm around himself as best he could despite the searing pain from what was no doubt a broken rib or two. He could feel his left eye swelling shut already, but tried to get to his knees all the same. Strangely enough, Marne let him. His breathing came somewhat like a wheeze with the swelling of his face, and he eyed the undead with a mix of betrayal, anger, and confusion. The hawkstrider, startled by the noise and the row, backpedaled and took off into the forest.
“I don’t understand- you said you stood in opposition!” He spat blood onto the cobbled road.
“I said I found the Banshee Queen’s methods distasteful, old man.” He rumbled, “She’s too soft.”
“Too soft-,” He almost laughed, “She burned the World Tree!”
“And she should’ve BLIGHTED it!” Marne hissed, lifting a boot to kick Darsamane in the face, sending him onto his back.
“None should’ve been allowed to escape that damned piece of kindling, and those who think this world can ever see peace without the annihilation of the Alliance are traitors to the cause!” He hovered over Darsamane, who was clutching at a broken, bleeding, and swelling nose.
“If you lay a hand on my daughter, I swear by the Sunwell I’ll-” He wasn’t permitted to finish the sentence before one gloved hand pulled him forward by the collar of his robes, while the other came down in a brutal jab.
“You’ll what?” Another punch. “You can’t even fight back! You pathetic old man!” He cackled, spittle flying into Darsamane’s face. The old elf reeled, but his gaze remained steely.
“You won’t win. Your types never do.” He snarled.
Marne stopped after the third punch, but whether it was because he was choosing his next words carefully or because Darsamane’s had struck a rare chord was anyone’s guess. But judging by the creeping smile that came over Marne’s face, the latter had never been an option. He pulled Darsamane close enough that the elf could smell the rot in his mouth- after all, there was no breath to be had. He tried not to gag.
“Oh, but we will. We play the long game.” He set the scientist back a few inches, only to slam the back of his head into the cobblestone with a disturbing crack. Darsamane hissed, and before he could speak Marne was upon him again, a foot pressed hard against his already broken and aching ribs.
“It’s such a simple equation- what a pity a man of your alleged intelligence can’t figure it out, Darkwind. Killing her? That achieves nothing. Killing her makes her a martyr, and inflames tensions and makes a mess of everything.” He leaned into his boot, prompting a wheeze from the brutalized elf.
“But killing you? That’s demoralizing. Her brother paid for his own treason with his life- your life will pay for hers.” He lifted the boot and brought it down in a heavy stomp, which sent blood and spit from Darsamane’s mouth as he curled onto his side in an instinctive effort to dull the pain.
Marne moved to hover in front of the man, kneeling down to glower at him with enough glee to send a shiver up any sane man’s spine.
“And in the end? She will learn that her actions will cost her everyone she loves. One by one, until there are none left. At some point, she will realize that her dream of peace has a cost even she won’t be willing to pay forever.”
Darsamane snarled, forcing a cocky grin to his broken face. “Except I know who you are. You’ll be found, tried, and pay for your crimes.”
“I won’t get away with this,” He echoed sardonically with a cackle. “Marne is not my name. But it wouldn’t matter anyway.. you think you’re the only one who hits the books, old man? A dagger in the back is quick and efficient, but I much prefer to see you waste away while your brain swells against your skull. You don’t know who I am at all…” He stood slowly, and Darsamane’s breathing quickened- a man all but staring his end in the face and finding himself now without recourse or power to stop it.
“And should you be lucky enough to wake up before you die, you won’t remember me anyway.”
A final swift kick was delivered to the center of Darsamane’s face, whipping him in the other direction on the path. No sound came from the elf as he lay a crumpled heap on the bloodied cobblestone path- the same path his own daughter had walked with Kalomar just weeks before. Marne put his ear to the man’s body- still breathing, but haggardly. No doubt he’d be read some form of the riot act for not ensuring the man’s death, but they’d see the point of it soon enough.
Wiping his gloves and boots clean, he quickly found and dispatched a feral worgen, scratching its claws along the unconscious elf before smearing some of its blood and fur on himself and ‘hurrying’ to the Forsaken Front to find the nearest band of guards. Feigning concern, he quickly pointed down the path.
“Hurry- hurry! An old sin’dorei man was ambushed by a feral worgen- he needs medical attention!”
The few guards that did manage to care enough (largely about a returned worgen threat) to traverse down the path would find Darsamane lying in a pool of blood and spit- alive, but just barely. He was rather unceremoniously carted back to the Front, and when it was determined they lacked the services and skills needed to ensure his continued survival, it was an undead mage who seemed to take pity on the ailing man. With little word spoken, he opened a portal to Dalaran, ushering those carrying the stretcher forward. They returned soon after without the stretcher or the man, and the portal was closed. Let the living handle their own- it was better than the dead trying to save the life of a man now hanging by a thread.
By the time anyone of importance could return to further question the lone forsaken who’d made the report, he was long gone. Instead, Marne watched from the shadows of a tree-lined hill with a sadistic smile and low chuckle. Slowly, the bandanna returned to cover his lower jaw, and he slipped into the darkness.

Arranged Marriage | Urzai Week Prompt 1
Day one!! Super exciting. This one really didn’t want to be written but. Here I am. x) Enjoy!
[read it on A03]
“Do not let them fool you, Ursa. You are going to be on thin ice in the palace. You are only as privileged as the Fire Lord allows you to be. Do not forget it.”
Urzai Week prompt 1: Arranged Marriage
Iroh and Ozai
.
Caldera’s Grand Palace, January
“I will not marry the granddaughter of a traitor!” Ozai’s voice snaps across the space like a whip. Iroh watches his brother pace, a caged moose-lion whose fury is crackling off of him in waves. The temperature of the room rises in tandem with the younger man’s temper. Iroh hums out, letting the heat radiate away from him with a careful release of his breath.
“I am afraid you do not really have a choice, little brother,” he tells him evenly.
“There’s always a choice,” Ozai answers, biting the words from the air.
Iroh hums again, inclining his head in agreement. Though —
“That is true, but there are limited choices in this matter, Ozai. Going against father directly will result in punishment. Who knows how harsh it will be. Perhaps this time it will not be something that you can come back from,” Iroh warns. “You could run away on your own, banish yourself…But I don’t think that’s really something you want to do.”
He cannot imagine his little brother roughing it. Not like one sometimes must when surviving on their own. Ozai is proud and poised, a true courtier. Iroh can see him bringing about his own downfall through his pride alone, if left to his own devices.
“Or you can marry Lady Ursa. Did you get a good look at her portrait? Either the painter greatly flatters her, or she is one of the most beautiful women in the Fire Nation.”
“I don’t care if she’s the most beautiful woman in the world, she is the granddaughter of Avatar Roku! This is an insult and a slight! Father plays his games as though there are no repercussions for those of us on the receiving end! What on earth could he possibly hope to accomplish by marrying me to her?”
Iroh purses his lips, considering his brother’s argument.
“You are a powerful bender,” he suggests, “and Ursa’s grandfather was the Avatar. Ostensibly also a powerful bender. Perhaps he thinks to unite the two lines in order that any left over dissenters will be assuaged and encouraged to the right side of things by marrying the two of you to one another.”
“It is a heinous joke. One played on me because he wishes to remind me of how little he thinks of me!”
“I do not think that father thinks lowly of you, Ozai.”
“Then you are blind!”
Iroh presses his lips together in a thin line, breathing out a sigh. There is no reasoning with Ozai when he is like this. The older of the two brothers lifts his tea cup, pausing with the warmed rim against his bottom lip before he finally takes a sip of the sweet jasmine brew.
“So what do you propose you will do?”
Ozai stills completely. From prowling lion-moose to statue in a breath. “I will refuse to see her.” He says finally.
Iroh makes a sound in the back of his throat.
“That will not work.”
“Well I don’t hear you making any suggestions!”
“Ozai please. Sit down. Have some tea. Rest your feet.”
“You’re no help!” His brother throws his hands in the air, and goes back to pacing. Iroh gives in. It’s always been best to let these moods of Ozai’s play out. He’ll come to see reason in a day or so. Then he will be ready to meet his betrothed when she arrives in a month’s time.
“If you say so,” Iroh answers finally, taking another sip of his tea.
Ursa
.
En route from Hira’a, February (one week before the New Year)
“Ursa.”
She tears her gaze from the passing landscape around them, returning her attention to her parents where they sit across from her in the dark carriage. It’s been raining buckets for two days, the monsoon season clinging to the country like a child to its mother’s breast.
Ursa’s mother is looking as though her stomach is rolling about like waves on the sea in much the same fashion as Ursa’s has done since the moment that she stepped foot out of her childhood home for the last time.
“Are you tired? We could stop for the rest of the day. There is a quaint little town not far from here which is supposed to have the best papaya in the region.”
Her mother has been stalling their journey as much as she can. It doesn’t take a genius to see it, yet her father seems just as content to drag the proceedings out for as long as possible. Ursa cannot say she is sorry for it. There are many things which excite her in her life, but the prospect of being married, no matter that she gladly does it for her family’s sake (it is what’s done, after all), is a daunting one. Especially when it truly is to a stranger.
Things like this are done many different ways amongst the noble elite, she knows, but HIra’a is a small province, with very few nobles, and those who do make marriages at her age are usually love matches and have known their brides or grooms their entire lives.
Ursa bites back a sigh, shrugging her shoulders briefly.
“I’m not tired, but if you think that the papaya is worth the stop,” she offers.
“Oh it is,” her father says, taking her attention away from the nervous twist of her mother’s hands in the skirts of her robes. Ursa smiles briefly at the greying head of their house hold.
“We should stop,” he continues on, “no harm will come in taking one more day on the road. We didn’t give them an exact date for our arrival.”
“They could not begrudge us extra time spent on the road, surely,” Ursa asks. “After all, it’s so rare that any of us ventures out of Hira’a and into the wider Fire Nation.”
No doubt the Fire Lord’s son had been surprised to find that descendents of Avatar Roku still live in the Fire Nation. Let alone that there is a girl old enough to be his bride.
“There are plenty of things that they could and will grudge us. And you. Do not let them fool you, Ursa. You are going to be on thin ice in the palace. You are only as privileged as the Fire Lord allows you to be. Do not forget it.”
“Oh please Rina, don’t scare the girl. It’s an honour that the Fire Lord wishes for our daughter to marry his son. That he wants to join our two houses. It’s a show of faith,” her father asserts. He doesn’t raise his voice, but no argument is brooked, of this both women are assured.
Ursa glances at her mother, letting her amber gaze linger on the older woman where she ducks her head and says nothing else. The mother who has taught her so much. She’s not a fool. She knows as well as Rina does that her footing will be shaky at best, in the beginning. That she will be on thin ice, as her mother says.
She will be a stranger with no allies, and those allies that she does make right away will be questionable. They will be the snakes wanting to climb into the nest.
Ursa chews her bottom lip briefly, the full swell of the flesh slipping between her teeth before she goes back to looking at the scenery passing them by. The sky is dark and steely over the tree line.  She turns her attention down to her lap, picking at a piece of dry skin beside her thumbnail. She winces when the skin comes away, stinging.
Ursa and Ozai
.
Caldera’s Grand Palace, one day before the New Year celebration
The nobles have gathered. Every important person from every corner of the Fire Nation has arrived garbed in their finest, waving their scented fans about and wandering the covered walkways of the great expanse of the palace’s garden.
There is no humidity today. Her long, heavy, robes are more than comfortable in the far cooler climes of the capitol city, insulating her against the chill edge in the air. No wonder all of the Fire Nation’s official portraiture shows the Royal Family in such heavy, long, clothing. It’s cold enough up here to set her teeth to chattering.
As such, every ten feet or so there are lighted steel pits, the air above them shimmering with their heat, radiating out to warm cold fingers and exposed faces for those coming from the far Southern reaches of the Fire Nation.
Ursa notes that even some Earth Kingdom dignitaries are present, their green robes a striking contrast to the red which permeates the palace decor, beneath the heavily present gilded patterning that seems to cover nearly every surface near or far. The rails of the covered walk way wink cool gold lilies up at her, carved into the wood surface. Ursa’s steps scrape the wooden boards at her feet, the hem of her robe hissing in her wake.
No matter how humble their beginnings, her father and mother have made certain that she is the best dressed woman in the room. She figures it must have cost them a month’s wages from the tenants at least, to pay for the seamstress and the cloth.
She passes an austere looking gentleman, around her age. He’s richly dressed, she presumes, but his outfit is all black, plain. If it weren’t for the little coronet nestled in his top knot Ursa would not have taken him for a noble, per se. He’s handsome. Handsome enough to raise the heat in her cheeks, but she looks away.
She’s a promised woman. There’s no room for a roving eye anymore. Not in her future husband’s house. Not amongst her elusive future in-laws.
Their audience has been reserved until after the week of New Year festivities has abated. Until then, she has free roam of the palace grounds, and a beautiful room that has been made to suit a princess. So far, she reflects, they are treating her well. So far there is no reason to worry about what her place will be once she has been married into the fold.
But she wishes that they would get this all over with. She wishes that her parents had not deemed the New Year the appropriate time to arrive.
It is a good chance to mingle though, she knows. To charm some of the nobility, and reaffirm old alliances that her parents have cultivated over the years. Who would have known that such alliances could be put to use by way of their daughter’s advancement.
Now it will be those nobles who are grateful. Those nobles who will come to her when they need something, and plead for her to put a word in for them, a whisper of good faith; an accounting of debts.
Her tongue darts out to wet her lower lip, tasting the chalk of her lipstick where it comes off of her mouth. Ursa swallows convulsively and stops to accept ceremonial libations offered by a servant. The woman darts back through the crowd, serving the next in line of nobles who find their palms wanting.
Ursa tips the heated cherry wine into her mouth and swallows again. It warms down her throat and through her chest. She imagines that this is what it would feel like to be a fire bender.
Someone stands too close at her back. She can feel him before she sees him. The young woman turns to look and sees the handsome man from before, all dressed in stark, crisp, black. He looks down his long nose at her, his crown-gold eyes sweeping the length of her neck where it is bared by the cut of her robes. Ursa flushes, looking away briefly, embarrassed by his open stare.
She feels as though he is attempting to gouge her for her secrets.
“Hello,” he says. His voice is silk smooth. Ursa fights the need to clear her throat, and composes herself.
“Hello,” she answers smoothly in turn. He says nothing else. She feels the air between them growing thick. If he were not so handsome perhaps she would have absconded away already. As it is her tongue darts out once more and she offers him a brief smile.
“The palace is lovely. Do you suppose it is always this crowded for the New Year celebration?”
He scoffs, a burst of air through his nose, ducking his face a moment before looking out at the green expanse of the garden. Mist has gathered on a small body of water that sits at the center of the green space.
“It is always this crowded for the New Year celebration,” he tells her, “and really any other occasion. It is a miracle when it’s peaceful in the palace.”
He lives here, then. A noble with rooms? He is wearing such plain robes because he has nothing to prove, she thinks. His wealth and status speak for themselves amongst those who know him. She wonders who he must be.
“I wouldn’t know. My home is never so busy as this, even if the entire Village and surrounding nobles have come to visit,” Ursa offers for conversation.
“Did you travel far?”
“Yes. Actually this is the first time that I have ever been this far away from home.”
“A secluded life then.”
“….Not really,” Ursa answers. “There is always someone about. Someone visiting. Things to be done.”
He sniffs, as though realising that she is a country noble and suddenly losing interest. Perhaps he does. Perhaps later, when he finds that she is more noble than he could ever hope to be he will feel sorry, and frightened. Part of her wants this. The other cannot find room to care. If he is important she will come to know as much. He must be, if he can afford to be this terrible a conversationalist.
“Please excuse me.” She bows to him. “I see my mother, and she is looking for me.”
He nods at her in return, and Ursa turns, pushing through the crowd quickly to find her mother and father as she has promised.
Rina turns to her daughter with a quick gesture of her hand to come near. “Where did you get off to? Don’t get lost in the crowd. This place is so big we’d never find one another again,” she frets.
Ursa links arms with her mother, for once not grudging her mother’s worry.
Ursa
.
The banquet hall
Her father’s arm brushes her own as they seat themselves where they are shown. It seems there is but a moment between when she is seated and when the entire court rises again. A servant announces the appearance of the Fire Lord and his two sons. Ursa doesn’t dare look up as they pass. The hem of the crown prince’s wife’s robes brushes the floor just beyond where Ursa has prostrated herself.
It’s as richly embroidered as her own. The barest hint of perfume wafts from it with the movement of her passage.
A black hem brings up the end of the procession. She straightens fluidly with the rest of the assembled, and brings her attention to the front of the room. If there is any good moment to catch a glance of her fiancé before the official meeting, then it is now.
Recognition brushes both of her faces as their eyes meet.
He looks even more disgusted than before, if that is possible.
Ursa and Ozai
.
The grand courtyard, May
Ozai stares straight ahead as the Fire Sage reads the rites which will bind them to one another for good. He sees the flash of gold in the man’s hands as he lowers the symbolic crowns to hover above both of their heads. He thinks of the flash of his father’s crown in the fire light as he reaches out and strikes him hard across the face for even thinking to scorn this bride that he has brought him from some spirits forsaken province in their far South.
He remembers that the first impression he’d had of his new bride had been of a poor country girl out of her element, but pretty enough. She’d been so much more beautiful than he portrait that he had not recognised her until he had looked her way at the banquet and discovered that the woman he had attempted flirting with (and failed) at the visitation of the palace by the nobility had been none other than the woman whom he had been attempting to escape for over four months.
The Fire sage sets the crowns aside and brings forth a length of crimson silk, wrapping it about their joined hands. He speaks the words, but Ozai doesn’t hear them. They’re drowned out by the pounding of his heart in his ears. The palpable fury of being made to do this is enough for him to want to set the very air around them ablaze.
Perhaps if he burns himself and his new wife to ash now he can save them both the obvious suffering that they will have to go through.
They bow their heads to the ground in tandem.
When they rise, his brother comes forward with a gilded wooden box, opening it up and handing it to a servant. She holds it steady as he reaches within and brings forth the Fire Lord’s gift to Ozai’s new bride. A heavy sunstone and garnet waist decoration that ends in the family’s emblem.
Ursa allows a servant to attach it about her waist for her. Iroh brings forth the gifts from himself and his wife. A few rings. Simple, but pretty.
Ozai closes his eyes and waits for it all to be over.
At least the food is good.
Ursa and Ozai
.
Their private quarters on the wedding night, May
Ozai’s petulance remains. He is determined to make their marriage difficult. She can feel it in the way that the air warms around him whenever he thinks that she is paying too much attention. In the way that he turns from her whenever she attempts to speak.
This is going to be a challenge.
Most obviously, he had not known her either when he had approached on the first day of the New Year celebrations. Though he had been…up front, he had at least seemed to be interested in her. Now his disinterest drips off of him even as he shrugs away the outermost layer of his crimson and gold ceremonial robes.
Ursa sits at the edge of the bed they are to share, her heart hammering hard in her chest. Her fingers curl into the covers.
The bed dips as Ozai sits beside her, his own hands draped over his knees as he continues to stare forward at the wall opposite them. Ursa looks sidelong at her new husband, attempting to keep her breathing even.
“This arrangement,” Ozai begins then, and she is shocked to hear her husband’s voice after so long spent together in silence, “is no doubt not ideal for either of us. I have no illusions that you want me any more than I want you. However, my father will not suffer insubordination. No matter what comes, you and I are husband and wife. You will comport yourself as such,” he informs her.
Ursa raises her eyebrows but says nothing. If it is a model wife that he wants then, in public, that is what she will give him. In private…
Hesitantly, Ursa reaches toward him, her palm closing over Ozai’s thigh. Warmth radiates off of him in waves.
He looks down stiffly at her hand. He shifts his weight and she does as well.
They move in tandem with one another for the first time, but certainly not the last.

From three hours to 10 days, we are ready to tackle any highschool, college, or university paper. So dad and mom who go the route of getting their kids’ essay ghosted, I think, will likely meet with tragedy and remorse on that down the road. This was well earlier than I considered myself “a author,” and think it actually helped increase my confidence to take the noble path. I was amazed that anyone would pay me to do something I liked, and received plenty of positive feedback from my boss. It’s not very simple to fit “quality” and “cheap” in the same sentence, however we've a method around that. Our professionals’ work isn't ‘low-cost,’ but we maintain affordability. Our rates are truthful as a result of we perceive that students usually are not the wealthiest purchasers. Amazon's incredible, vanishing cardboard box - CNN
Tumblr media
Over the past decade, e-commerce has been a welcome boost for the cardboard industry at a time when demand in sectors like food and manufacturing has stagnated. Shopping online is seven times more cardboard-intensive than picking up items from a store, according to the commodity data analytics company Fastmarkets, and e-commerce generated 1.3 million tons of container board in North America in 2018 — a jump up from 1.1 million the year before.
"In a regular brick-and-mortar supply chain, products are put in blister packs, and then go into a box on a pallet and don't leave that box until they're in the store," explains Derek Mahlburg, an analyst with Fastmarkets. "In e-commerce, the products get shipped to individual houses, so they get taken out of that box very early, and then they get put in a new box."
That increased demand has also driven prices upward, Mahlburg says, prompting retailers and shippers to try to find ways to waste less cardboard in their packaging — which has environmental benefits, as well.
Why the United States uses so much cardboard
The United States is starting from a low baseline when it comes to cardboard recycling. Because America has abundant space for tree farms, pulp is relatively cheap; the country has long been a big exporter of wood fiber. Also, boxes usually have to travel longer distances than they do in more dense places like Europe, and historically boxes made out of recycled material haven't been strong enough to survive the journey intact.
There hasn't been much regulatory or consumer pressure to increase recycling rates, depressing the supply of cardboard to be recycled. In those places, both companies and governments have imposed much more ambitious sustainability targets. A strict new law in Germany requires that manufacturers report how much packaging waste they generate. JD.com — the Amazon of China — is shooting for 100% recyclable or reusable packaging by 2020.
For those reasons, only about 35% of North America's total manufacturing capability is geared toward recycled content, according to Fastmarkets, compared to 80% in Europe and 93% in Asia.
"It's not so quick to switch factories that have been using virgin materials for many years," says Natasha Valeeva, an analyst at the Dutch financial services firm Rabobank. "We expect more pressure from society. The trend is everywhere, but in Europe it may be progressing faster in this direction. It's from a consumer perspective, but also from regulations."
Still, the United States is gradually changing, as paper companies have converted old newsprint mills into recycling facilities. They're also lowering the "basis weight" of cardboard, or the amount of material that has to go into every square foot.
"Corrugated companies are trying to take the paper out of paperboard," says Quint Marini, who runs the UPS packaging lab, which works with companies to cut down their shipping costs.
Mills have gotten better at making recycled cardboard that stands up to wear and tear, so it's usable for longer shipping routes. Mark Schlossman is the chief operating officer of Accurate Box, a manufacturer in Paterson, New Jersey, that produces boxes to order for companies ranging from PepsiCo to Jimmy John's. He says his company's boxes have gone from 70% virgin paper five years ago to 70% recycled today.
"The recycled liner board world has made tremendous strides in the last number of years, both in its availability and its pricing, and in the quality of its paper," Schlossman says. "In the box world, strength can be very very critical."
Even recycling, however, has an environmental impact — it requires huge amounts of water and energy. That's why shippers are also trying to use less cardboard in the first place.
In the early days of e-commerce, retailers would order large numbers of a few sizes of boxes, throw whatever needed to be shipped into one that seemed big enough, and fill all the empty space with bubble wrap and styrofoam peanuts.
No longer. In consultation with shippers like UPS — which in 2015 started charging by volume, not just weight — companies are shrinking their boxes by using algorithms that can tell them the precise dimensions they need to get an order from point A to point B.
One of the leaders in the world of "right-sizing" packaging is a Salt Lake City-based company called Packsize, which makes machines that retailers buy and use to make custom boxes in their own distribution centers. Their most advanced machine can automatically determine the optimal size for the combination of items that need to fit a box as soon as a customer clicks "buy," then route all the items onto a conveyor belt that automatically cuts and forms the box to size — no human assistance necessary.
"It's like an oversized Tetris that has been optimized," says Packsize CEO Hanko Kiessner. That not only saves on cardboard, it also allows shippers to pack boxes more densely in their trucks, requiring fewer trips. "When you have many smaller sized Tetris cubes, you have gaps, but the gaps are significantly smaller," he says.
Amazon as regulator
With nearly half of the e-commerce market, the biggest force in box shipments is Amazon.
The company buys millions of boxes a year from manufacturers close to its fulfillment centers. It employs statisticians, operations researchers, data scientists, material engineers and computational engineers — the types of people who design airplane wings — to think about boxes, bags and envelopes.
"We put those groups together, probably for the first time in the corrugate box business, to ask, 'what is happening to the corrugate box in the back of a truck?'" says Houchens.
The different stresses and strains on boxes in different parts of the truck told them how big each one really needed to be, and how thin the cardboard could get without jeopardizing the product inside. Amazon also uses machine learning algorithms to monitor feedback that comes from customers via call centers and social media on any damage that occurs in transit, to see when they've gone too far.
Using pilot production lines and partnerships with big tape and glue manufacturers, Amazon creates new designs and materials that its suppliers then figure out how to produce at scale — like a fully recyclable plastic-free padded envelope mailer, for example, rather than the standard bubble-wrap-and-paper version. With all of that combined, Houchens says they've managed to reduce packaging material by 19% in tons over their baseline year of 2016.
Still, there's plenty of room for improvement.
Companies are starting to design packaging differently for products that are bound for a customer's doorstep rather than a store shelf, so that those sold through e-commerce don't need an "overbox" at all. Tide laundry detergent now comes in a container that looks like boxed wine, rather than a plastic bottle that ships in a paper box.
Amazon has the scale and buying power to push those changes faster — and has been, since it helps its bottom line, as well. For the past year, for large items and those weighing 20 pounds or more, the company has been paying retailers $1 per package that is easily recyclable and able to ship without a brown Amazon overbox. Starting in August, it will stop paying that incentive, and instead charge $1.99 per package that doesn't comply.
Retailers are starting to see better packaging as an opportunity, too. Shipping in their own boxes also allows brands to make a stronger connection with their customers, with specialized messages on the inside to enhance the experience of getting something in the mail. They're trying to capitalize on the "unboxing" trend, wherein people record themselves opening a package and posting the video to YouTube, making the box that much more visible.
"It is a billboard, in a sense. It's the last impression that people have, your last point of contact with someone is when the box arrives at peoples' home," says Rachel Kenyon, vice president of the Fibre Box Association, which represents paper-based packaging manufacturers. "If you can take that one step further by enhancing that unboxing experience, it's a great opportunity."
Consumers are tired of garbage
Rightsizing, lightweighting, and getting rid of overboxes have reduced the rate of cardboard consumption so much that analysts believe production will slow, even as more goods are ordered online. As shopping through the mail becomes more common, companies and postal services are experimenting with ditching single-use cardboard containers altogether.
Amazon is running a pilot in India where products are delivered to homes in plastic totes, since it's more common in India for someone to be home during the day to receive them. (Security and privacy are a big reason why overboxes are used at all.) And in China, a company called Suning.com is using shared plastic delivery boxes in 13 cities that can be almost infinitely reused. In the United States, the rise of delivery lockers may allow for box-free delivery to spread as well.
Until everything is reusable, paper-based packaging companies are making the argument that at least cardboard is better than single-use plastic, even as they take steps to make packaging less damaging to the planet. And consumers, they point out are starting to reject products that come swathed in garbage.
"With social media, you can see people are not accepting certain things any more, and potentially not re-ordering because of it," says Herwin Wichers, market development director for Smurfit Kappa, a global Dublin-based paper packaging manufacturer that serves both Europe and the US. "Price is still an important part, convenience is still an important part, but the sustainability angle is starting to influence peoples' decisions."
At the same time, however, there's still a clear difference between the progress made in the US vs. Europe and Asia, with their stronger government mandates and culture of waste reduction.
Without similar pressure, even with Amazon pushing for change, the US will struggle to catch up.

First refugees of ‘Central American exodus’ arrive at US border | News
After a month-long journey, Central American migrants and refugees fleeing violence and poverty in giant teams are starting to reach on the southern border of the US to hunt asylum.
A whole lot of asylum seekers have reached the border this week and 1000’s extra are on their method to Tijuana, within the northwestern nook of Mexico. They face lengthy wait instances on the San Ysidro port of entry, asylum restrictions, potential indefinite detention and a closely fortified border.

Transgender girls additionally usually expertise violence, discrimination, and medical neglect in detention. Roxana Hernandez, a Honduran transgender girl who travelled to the US with a migrant and refugee caravan earlier this yr, died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody from well being problems suspected to have been aggravated by her detention in freezing chilly situations in New Mexico detention services.
Central American LGBTI asylum-seekers threat the hazards of journey and detention as a result of the scenario at house in lots of international locations is drastically extra harmful, particularly for homosexual males and transgender girls.
“Trans folks in my neighbourhood are killed and chopped into items, then dumped inside [100-pound sacks],” Hernandez mentioned in an interview with Buzzfeed Information earlier than crossing into the US and dying in ICE custody.

The continued discrimination and violence Central American LGBTI refugees face after they flee house for the US to hunt asylum was highlighted by Amnesty Worldwide in a November 2017 report devoted to the difficulty.
“Terrorised at house, and abused whereas attempting to hunt sanctuary overseas, they’re now a number of the most weak refugees within the Americas. The truth that Mexico and the USA are prepared to observe on as they undergo excessive violence is, merely, legal,” Amnesty Worldwide Americas Director Erika Guevara-Rosas mentioned in a press release when the report, No Secure Place, was revealed.
‘The exodus will proceed’
LGBTI migrants and refugees are significantly focused with violence, however security is numbers is a driving issue behind the brand new type of collective migration generally.
Over the previous twenty years, 1000’s of migrants and refugees have been killed or disappeared alongside the route north.

Many Central People have additionally died from publicity to the weather whereas crossing into the US by desert areas between official ports of entry. The present exodus has at all times deliberate to reach at an official port of entry to hunt asylum.
The exodus is extremely seen resulting from worldwide media consideration and is a major shift in the way in which folks migrate north, however the mass migration itself from northern Central America shouldn’t be extraordinary. A whole lot of individuals flee Honduras alone each day, in line with rights teams.
Media consideration has largely targeted on the primary wave of the exodus now progressively starting to reach in Tijuana, however the group of greater than 6,000 asylum-seekers is simply the primary wave of a bigger development.

Welcome to Hot Pod, a newsletter about podcasts. This is issue 181, published October 16, 2018.
The state of Slate. Two seemingly conflicting ideas can be true at the same time. Here’s the first idea, which doubts a line of speculation I’ve been seeing a lot lately: Panoply’s divestment from the content business tells us relatively little about the future of the podcast business at Slate, its sister company under the Graham Holdings family. Here’s the second idea: there’s a lot changing at Slate at the moment, and I can’t tell you for certain what its podcast operations will look like this time next year.
Does this paint a worrying picture? Not necessarily. Let’s go over the notes.
Over the past week or so, the veteran digital media company has seen some turnover at the leadership level. On October 4, it was announced that Slate’s editor-in-chief, Julia Turner, is departing for the Los Angeles Times, where she will serve as the newly revitalized paper’s deputy managing editor for arts and entertainment. She will, however, remain as co-panelist on the Slate Culture Gabfest, which means that the podcast will mirror the Slate Political Gabfest in being a Slate podcast stalwart that features three main panelists who aren’t on staff. Deputy editor Lowen Liu takes over Turner’s spot for now.
Then, last Wednesday, Slate’s executive producer of podcasts, the NPR alum Steve Lickteig, announced that he, too, would be leaving the company, to become the executive producer of audio and podcasts at NBC News and MSNBC. (There, he will be joined by senior producer Barbara Raab.)
All this comes on top of the executive-level departure that was announced last month in tandem with the news that Panoply was laying off its editorial team: Jacob Weisberg, chairman of the Slate Group, was leaving to form a new audio company with Malcolm Gladwell, taking the audience-driving Revisionist History with them.
That these leadership exits are clustered is certainly eyebrow-raising, but any overtly glum narrative should be checked against the state of site’s actual podcast portfolio. And on that front, things seem to be quite good.
Consider that Slate has just wrapped up a very successful second season of its narrative documentary podcast, Slow Burn. Not only would I argue that it’s the best nonfiction narrative podcast of the year so far — yes, that includes Serial, In The Dark, and Caliphate, and yes, I’m aware it’s almost certainly recency bias — the sophomore season put up significant numbers. (Some of those numbers, apparently, came from White House aides.) I’m told that, as of Monday afternoon, the second season alone has seen 9.8 million downloads, with an expectation of beating 10 million by tomorrow. It was also an effective driver of subscriptions for Slate Plus, the site’s paid membership program, generating thousands of new members with its offerings of bonus content.
It’s worth noting that Gabriel Roth, previously a senior editor and editorial director of Slate Plus, will be taking up Steve Lickteig’s leadership role over the podcast team. Slow Burn was largely born out of the Slate Plus program, and I’m told that Roth was an instrumental part of the show’s development and strategy. He will hold a new title, editorial director of the Slate Podcast Network, and I, for one, am excited to see what else he brings into the mix.
Consider, also, that Slow Burn’s success comes on top of a well-oiled and sprawling show portfolio that most notably includes all of its Gabfest programming, The Gist with Mike Pesca, and Studio 360 (which it doesn’t own, but houses and co-produces in partnership with PRX-PRI).
That portfolio continues to grow: On Tuesday, Slate will launch its own daily news podcast (The Gist notwithstanding) called What Next with former WNYC personality Mary Harris at the mic, and the site also recently absorbed Karina Longworth’s popular history podcast You Must Remember This, previously housed at Panoply.
Again, two seemingly contradictory things can be true at the same time. In this case, you have dramatic shifts at the leadership level, but you also have a product line that appears to be stable, robust, and reaching for new heights. Take from that whatever conclusions you will, but for me, I’m tempted to put a little more weight on the latter.
The only way is pods [by Caroline Crampton]. How real is reality, really, when it’s captured on a microphone, edited extensively, and then bundled with narration before being presented to the listener?
That’s the Big Question prompted by The Brights, a new British podcast launching this week that presents itself as part of a curious sounding genre: “structured reality.” Behind the production is a producer named Sarah Dillistone, who happens to be the brains behind big British reality TV hits The Only Way is Essex and Made in Chelsea, as well as host Lydia Bright, who found fame as a cast member on TOWIE. (That’s the fun acronym for The Only Way Is Essex, by the way, in case that wasn’t clear to you.) The Brights will follow Lydia and her family over the course of 12 weekly episodes, which will supposedly reveal their everyday highs and lows. It kicks off on October 18.
“[Podcasting] just felt like a really exciting space to be telling this sort of story in this genre,” said Dillistone when we spoke over the phone recently. I had reached out to learn about how she is translating her reality television work into the seemingly more modest audio medium.
“When you go into a family house to film a scene, you have set up your cameras, the lights go on, you have to place people in the exact position for the shot, and then they talk about whatever story is going on,” she explained. “With the podcast, we walked in, popped some mics on, and that was it…It just felt so natural. I can just walk out the room, and life continues being recorded, without the pressures of a camera.”
In many ways, the traditional methods for making a storytelling podcast — identifying characters and scenes, collecting a lot of tape, shaping it into the desired narrative, and then recording narration to go around it — are similar to the methods Dillistone said she uses to create her structured reality TV shows. The difference now that she’s working in audio, she emphasized, is how much less of an intervention the process of recording feels. With no cameras or yells of “action” going on, “the environment just doesn’t change,” she said. “I think it’s completely different to the TV that I’ve made.”
The Brights also strikes me as a straightforward commercial proposition. Lydia Bright has nearly a million followers on Instagram — where she does plenty of sponcon — and appears fairly regularly in the tabloid pages. I’m sure that Acast, the podcast platform that hosts and sells ads for the project, won’t be struggling all that hard to find sponsors who want to follow Bright into podcasting as well.
In the accompanying press release, The Brights is strongly pitching itself as the world’s first ever reality podcast. But I don’t think it can stake claim on being the first “reality podcast” per se. After all, CBC’s Sleepover, Gimlet’s The Habitat, and maybe even something like Megan Tan’s Millennial arguably fall along design lines that are somewhat similar to what we generally talk about when we talk about reality television.
Where the podcast is distinct or unusual, perhaps, is in its focus on harvesting the profile of existing reality stars and the transference of the familiar reality TV aesthetic. Rather than Lydia Bright taking the route of other social media stars and building a generic interview podcast or similar to augment her #brand, she’s actually still doing the thing she’s best known for: goofing around and yelling at her family in public, but in your headphones.
The other chart. I spilled quite a bit of ink last week on the Apple Podcast charts, how they seemed more dysfunctional than usual, and how that complicates the way the industry is represented to the eyes of many newcomers. Apologies for quoting myself, but I posed two underlying questions: “What does it mean when the top of the Apple podcast charts, one of the first touchpoints for many newcomers, features more scams than authentic entries? What signal of values does the chart project to those experiencing their first glimpse of the wider podcast universe?”
Versions of these queries very much apply to the Podtrac Industry Publisher ranker, by the way, which is the other major node of industry representation that functions as a first touch for many newcomers — and which still gets cited as an authoritative picture of the “top end” of the podcast industry without much caveat.
As a reminder: Podtrac’s Publisher ranker continues to work with an incomplete sample. Which is to say, its list of Top Ten publishers only includes those who have chosen to participate in the ranking, and a good number of major players still have not. (The case is different for Podtrac’s podcast ranker, which purports to list shows regardless of whether they opt into Podtrac’s system.) I know nobody really clicks through when I link to my older columns — newsletter analytics, baby — but I wrote about those chart limitations two years ago.
Among the notable publishers that still do not participate in Podtrac’s Publisher Ranker: Gimlet Media, the Vox Media Podcast Network, Cadence13, and Stitcher. That’s not to say that they would all show up in the top 10 if they were included, mind you; I’m just making a point about what the ranker is actually telling you, and many of those noteworthy podcast shops remain excluded at this writing.
This should not be taken to mean that Podtrac’s industry ranker isn’t a helpful resource. I’ve come to find it really useful as a snapshot of the several major publishers that have opted into the list, and it’s generated some interesting questions for research: I, for one, am fascinated by why many companies in Podtrac’s top ten seems to cluster around the 5 million unique U.S monthly listeners mark. All I’m saying is that being “the third biggest publisher on the Podtrac” is far from being the “third biggest podcast publisher,” period — which is an interchanging I’ve seen used a fair bit.
In general, I’d counsel being wary of any industry analysis, ~thought leadership~, or self-congratulations using the Podtrac ranker that:
Doesn’t mention its incomplete sampling;
Doesn’t take into serious consideration the efficiency ratios of listed publishers — a publisher that needs 600+ shows to reach 5 million unique U.S. monthly listeners has a very different industry position than a publisher that reaches the same audience number with only 5 or 6 shows.
Put some nuance on it, y’know?
Locally sourced [by Caroline Crampton]. Repackaged radio content still makes up a considerable chunk of podcasts. Here in the UK, the BBC in particular does a lot of this — the majority of shows that you can see on its Apple page, for instance, went out as radio broadcasts first. Most of the time, they just get sandwiched with a new intro and outro bits. Occasionally, they slap on some extra material, but typically what you hear on the podcast is what you would have heard on the radio. Until the BBC’s recent shakeup to its podcast commissioning efforts (which I’ve written about in more detail here), this is how the corporation initially projected its influence through podcasting.
That was on my mind when I saw the announcement that BBC English Regions was planning to launch its own showcase podcast feed, called Multi Story. For the uninitiated, English Regions is the segment of the corporation that produces local and regional television, radio, and web content for England, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands. (Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland have their own operations going on.) I assumed that the feed would be yet another basic radio repackage effort designed to broadly bump up the potential reach of the division’s 43 local radio stations. The project sounded like a budget-friendly way of getting local radio stories out through podcast feeds when individual stations, typically cash-strapped, might not have the time, bandwidth, or resources to produce original podcast content. And you know, I figured that was totally cool.
But when I listened to the opening of “Swallows,” the first episode dropped into the Multi Story feed last Wednesday, I realized that this was something far more than a simple repackage.
Veteran local radio journalist Becca Bryers, who serves as host and producer, had woven hand-picked excerpts of personal stories from various local radio documentaries into a contemplative, act by act structure. It’s vaguely reminiscent of the way a typical episode of This American Life is constructed. The show’s atmosphere feels purely suited to on-demand audio, from the scoring to Bryers interjecting dashes of her personal life experiences. Even more notably, the episode was largely stripped of any local radio promotional effort in favor of a clean, immersive, podcast-first listening experience.
“Local radio gets stories that perhaps some of the networks don’t, almost because they’re not able to, because at a local station you’re coming into contact with people on a really small level all the time,” Bryers told me. The idea of a digital audio project weaving these more lasting, timeless, personal stories together seemed the natural next step to her.
Development for Multi Story began around 18 months ago, when Bryers took that idea of weaving together timeless and personal locally sourced stories to the then English regions commissioner, David Holdsworth. After getting her to make a pilot, he commissioned a ten-episode first series of Multi Story, an out-of-the-box move for a BBC executive heading up a division that had no real track record with podcasting. It’s a stretch play that Bryers is grateful for. “I really appreciate that he took that chance on me,” she said.
Bryers sees Multi Story first and foremost as a chance to make a rgreat podcast rather than necessarily as a direct promotional tool for radio or the local stations that it draws on. “I don’t know if completely the aim is to increase the listenership for the radio stations,” she said. “Obviously you’d hope that it raises awareness of local radio in general…We think of it a bit like the Facebook pages that each of the local stations have. Originally the thinking with those was as a branding strategy for the station, whereas often now we see them as a separate entity, just another service that the local stations offer. Just because you use the Facebook page doesn’t mean you listen to the radio and vice versa.”
She used her contacts in local radio to find “producers who really get podcasting” at each station, who would then populate a farm system feeding her suitable stories. She also did a substantial amount of original reporting, gathering tape for “stories I’ve been working on for a while but haven’t found a place on the station.” With the pieces that had already been broadcast, she worked extensively to “reversion” them in a “podcasty way,” to avoid the sound being that of replayed radio. “That’s not to take away from the original broadcast,” she said. “I think that if you’ve got something that’s two people talking in a studio, there’s ways that you can lift that into a podcast style and put music under it, or give it more pauses, and breathing space.”
The result, I think, is something quite rare — a genuinely fresh piece of audio made partly from cuts of previous broadcasts. Bryers’ personal immersion in podcasting (she counts herself a massive fan of Ira Glass and Radiolab) and determination to do something different have allowed her to break out of the customary “BBC sound,” and hers is a template that others trying to squeeze more out of the BBC’s existing resources could do well to follow. “I’m genuinely passionate about doing this,” Bryers said. “I really hope that it comes across that it’s not just a ‘local radio thinks they should jump on the podcast bandwagon’ thing.”
Speaking of locally oriented media and podcasts…
The national local. Next Monday will see the release of Believed, an investigative series by NPR and Michigan Radio, the state’s network of local public radio stations. The podcast will examine the USA Gymnastics sex abuse scandal, one of the largest serial sexual abuse cases in American’s history. Michigan Radio reporters Kate Wells and Lindsey Smith will host the series. Here’s a great Elle write-up outlining the show.
Here’s something that this NPR-Michigan Radio collaboration is making me think about: this scandal was originally vaulted into the national consciousness by The Indianapolis Star, the Gannett-owned daily news organization in neighboring Indiana. Gannett, of course, also owns the USA Today Network, which recently launched its own nationally oriented podcast platform that intends to use Gannett’s ecosystem of local publishing entities as pipelines for potential investigative projects.
I bring Gannett’s national podcast initiative up to highlight what seems to be a noticeable increase in the trend of local-national podcast production partnerships. For some reason, my gut tells me that this isn’t a particularly new development, but I can’t seem to find very many similarly structured productions going back over the past four years. (In other words, hit me up with examples I totally missed.)
Anyway, here are two other contemporary productions that I see fitting into this mold:
(1) Gladiator, a limited series that debuted yesterday from the Boston Globe’s Spotlight team in collaboration with Wondery on the former NFL player Aaron Hernandez, who was convicted of murder and later took his own life in prison. This project continues Wondery’s strategy of partnering with local news organization to produce feverish, nationally eye-catching podcast programming that can be then packaged off as adaptation IP — see: the Los Angeles Times’ Dirty John, now an upcoming Bravo series starring the great Connie Britton. (Give! Connie! Britton! More! Roles!)
Speaking of which, the LA Times is apparently developing two follow-ups to the aforementioned Dirty John, or so the company announced at the recent NewFronts West event. Here’s some info for those projects, as described by AdWeek:
The first new podcast project, tentatively titled Big Willie, will follow a local street racing veteran and Vietnam veteran, examining his eccentric career and checkered legacy; the second, Room 20, centered on an unidentified car crash victim who has been in a coma for 17 years, will piece together clues about the man’s life.
Note that they are both true crime projects. True crime: if it works for them, it works for you.
(2) Last week also saw the release of Underdog, a new weekly podcast documentary from Texas Monthly and Pineapple Street Media tracking the closing days of the Democratic senatorial campaign of Beto O’Rourke — pronounced Beh-to, not Bey-to, as I learned from the first episode — as we crawl into the midterm elections.
Local-national production partnership aside, here’s why I’m in on this show. As I, armchair political analyst Nick Quah, told Fast Company:
[O’Rourke’s] fight with Ted Cruz is increasingly a stand-in for a bigger struggle about the heart of America… I know [O’Rourke] said otherwise, but he’s probably a viable 2020 [presidential] contender for the Democrats [if he wins]. I’d listen the crap out of a Beto-Cruz podcast.
But also: I remain fascinated by Pineapple Street’s continuing adventures with political media and podcasting. Underdog is a strictly journalistic product co-developed with a widely respected monthly, but Pineapple Street is also the shop that produced With Her, the official Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential election campaign podcast that’s essentially a longform political ad/branded podcast, and Stay Tuned with Preet Bharara, an interview show-slash-ideas platform for the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York. There’s some line straddling here, but nonetheless, I’m very interested to see where else the boutique studio will take political podcasts, already a vibrant and saturated genre.
Midterms, everyone: it’s a mere three weeks away.
One last local podcast bite —
Last week also saw the final dispatch of WBEZ’s 16 Shots, which sought to document the Laquan McDonald police shooting trial in semi-real time. The production was the latest in a line of similarly structured efforts by MPR News with 74 Seconds, which followed the Philando Castile police shooting trial, and WHYY with Cosby Unraveled.
Betsy Berger, the station’s director of communications, tells me that they’re considering 16 Shots a success “from a journalistic perspective, as a partnership with the Chicago Tribune and critical acclaim.” She noted that it was promoted heavily on social media and through the station’s email newsletter, and that the project garnered more than 30 media placements. However, they declined to share download numbers.
This week in New York. Did you know that New York Magazine is developing not one but two new podcasts?
The Intelligencer, the new site that merged together NY Mag’s politics and business-focused Daily Intelligencer and tech-focused Select All sections, is working on something called 2038, which will “explore eight different visions of how we can expect to live in two decades.” It will be hosted by Max Read and David Wallace-Wells, and it drops tomorrow.
I wrote this up already, but now we have a thread: New York Magazine’s The Cut site is collaborating with Gimlet Media to produce a weekly “what’s happening in the newsroom” podcast, called The Cut on Tuesdays. It’s hosted by Molly Fischer, and the first episode dropped today.
These two projects add to Vulture’s ongoing interview podcast Good One: A Podcast About Jokes, hosted by Jesse David Fox, resulting a New York Magazine podcast portfolio shape that I suppose you can describe as “one-site, one-show.” For now, anyway. This marks the storied media organization’s second wave into on-demand audio; the first came in the form of Panoply partnerships, back when that company was still producing content and generally pursued a strategy of hand-holding non-audio publishers into the medium through Gabfest-style templates. That early wave resulted in the Vulture TV Podcast, New York Magazine’s Sex Lives, and the Grub Street Podcast, all of which are now defunct.
A disclaimer: I contribute to Vulture as a podcast critic, but I have no special insight into these matters. In fact, I didn’t even know these shows were in the oven! Freelancers and contractors, we are an afflicted kind, living in little wells with fleeting views of the sky.
Miscellaneous Bites
Eric Mennel, the co-creator of Criminal and a senior producer at Gimlet Media who hosted a recent season of Startup, is moving to NPR, where he will join the Embedded team. There, he will serve as a supervising producer tasked with making the podcast a “premiere franchise for serious journalism” whose work will be presented through various platforms.
The television adaptation of Crooked Media’s Pod Save America debuted on HBO this past week. Much like Texas Monthly’s Underdog podcast, it runs until the midterms, which means it’s a really limited series.
