Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas Volume III : Line Up Reveal
Wales Arts Review is delighted to reveal the line-up for Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas Volume III, as the ultimate alternative Christmas album returns for a final installment, with an introduction by the album’s creator, Kevin McGrath.
I spent 2022 curating Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas Volumes I & II, a collection of 108 original Christmas songs, including contributions from Dodgy, Girl Ray, The Lilac Time, Pete Astor, Helen Love, White Town, bis and Suzzy Roche, in order to raise money for the homeless charity Crisis. The albums made a bit of a splash, being played on BBC6 Music, BBC Scotland, BBC Radio Wales (each volume was named an album of the week by Huw Stephens) and on Radio X. Internationally renowned critics John Harris and Pete Paphides endorsed the project, which raised just over £5,800 for Crisis at Christmas.
Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas Vol III, the final album in the series, follows the same eclectic mix as its predecessors: a generous sprinkling of celebrated indie names (this time around it’s The Wedding Present that tops the bill), cult combos from across Europe and America and a selection of underground bands that listeners will be thrilled to hear for the first time. All have one thing in common: they’ve each written a distinctive Christmas earworm that will make your Xmas playlists for years to come!
Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas III is available from Velindre Bandcamp, priced at £5.00. You can pre-order now, but if you can hold on until December 1st, a ‘bandcamp Friday’, the company waives its commission, raising even more money for Crisis. All of the credit for the compilation’s success goes to the contributing artists, a reflection of their creativity and generosity. As always, I don’t receive a penny.
It’s a thrill to exclusively reveal the line-up for Volume III at Wales Arts Review:
Merry Christmas Joey Ramone – El Sancho
El Sancho is a fast, fun DIY punk rock band from Hawaii. “Merry Christmas Joey Ramone”, taken from the combo’s 2022 cassette release Jollier Than Thou, is carried along on a wave of crunching riffs.
Christmas Was Better in the 80s – The Futureheads
The Futureheads, alongside Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party, were part of the “angular movement” of post-punk inspired bands that emerged in the 2000s. This track was originally released in 2010 and there remains a lot to like here, from the song’s affectionate swipe at Xmas nostalgia, to its blockbuster chorus.
Would You – Sunturns
Sunturns are a Norwegian super-group devoted to Xmas, featuring members of Making Marks, Moddi, The Little Hands of Asphalt, Monzano and Einar Stray Orchestra. “Would You” has a cool, distrait vocal that smooths the way to a simply glorious chorus. Taken from their 2nd Xmas album Sunturns II (2015).
youtube
Lockdown Holiday – The Brixton Riot
New Jersey’s The Brixton Riot wrote and recorded this especially for Jon Solomon’s 32nd Annual 25-hour Holiday Marathon show on WPRB 103.3 FM. Princeton. A legendary festive broadcast from Princeton University campus.
The Loneliest Time of Year – The Wedding Present
David Gedge has flirted with Xmas songs once or twice before, returning to the subject as part of last year’s 24 Songs album. At the time of release, the singer noted “To be honest, I’ve been one of those ‘bah, humbug’ types ever since I realised that the thing we’re really celebrating on 25th of December is capitalism!”.
youtube
It Only Snows at Christmas – Les Bicyclettes de Belsize
Charlie Darling, the one and only member of Les Bicyclettes de Belsize, has a true passion for Xmas songs. This track has a sublime Weather Prophets sheen to it and can be found on the Christmas compilation Dufflecoats and Christmas Cards (2016).
Christmas in the Borough of Our Birth – The Virgin Birds
“Kiss me on the mouth, It’s Christmas Eve”, sings Jon Rooney, helmsman of Seattle’s Virgin of the Birds, in a striking, stream of consciousness lyric that ventures well outside the scope of a traditional seasonal song.
Merry (Christmas) and Me – Toad Venom
Even in the age of social media, there is a dearth of info on Toad Venom. A Swedish band “experimenting in the void between the spaghetti western and psychedelic rock”, this track aims for the stratosphere and damn near gets there. Released in 2021.
C U Christmas Day – Jacklen Ro
The opening lines – ‘I’m on my way to your new apartment/Just down the street from Sunset Boulevard/The neon lights are all shining on me/My mistletoe is always where you are’ – sends a romantic shiver skidding down the spine as LA’s Jackie Giroux & Caelen Perkins trade vocals in heartwarming, heart-on-sleeve fashion.
A Cold Wind – The Ornaments
The ninth intriguing instalment of Christmas music from The Ornaments. Wisconsin’s Mike Behrends and Lance Owens are joined on this twist-in-the-tale seasonal story by Erin Kirby, literally phoning in her part from the airport.
Take it Easy This Christmas – Health and Wellbeing
This beautiful tune is taken from the band’s Christmas Demos EP, released on Xmas Day last year. Despite my best efforts, I haven’t found out too much more about the band, except that there may well be a Welsh connection. A proper Christmas mystery!
Thee Christmas Card Committee – Wake Up And Smell The Sun
Philadelphia’s John Murray, the mainstay of Wake Up And Smell The Sun, has long specialised in Xmas music, so it is a shock to hear from the singer/songwriter that he is renouncing, if that is not too strong a word, the seasonal sub-genre altogether. Enjoy it while it lasts.
The Joy is in the Giving – Lisa Mychols
Lisa Mychols, aka the ‘Queen of power-pop’, founded the cult LA group the Masticators in 1998. More relevant to this project, Lisa worked with Darian Sahanaja & Nick Walusko of the Wondermints (regular backing band for Brian Wilson) on Lost Winter’s Dream (1991), now regarded as a lost Xmas classic. Lisa re-recorded this 2017 track for the album.
Always a Dream – Charlie’s Hand Movements
“Always A Dream” is taken from Lance Keeble and Adam Gardner’s unique compilation album Xmas Singles 2014-18.
Xmas Trip – Run On
New York’s Art-Rock outfit Run On ‘combine a love of pop, rock and the avant-garde’ (Heather Phares). Originally written in 1996, “Xmas Trip” was re-released last year to raise funds for the American Foundation for The Prevention of Suicide.
The Pearlfishers
The Pearlfishers released an Xmas classic (if you like Prefab Sprout and The Beach Boys, that is) in 2004’s A Sunflower at Christmas. The track selected here comes from the expanded edition that the Glaswegian band issued through Germany’s Marina Records five years later.
Can You Hear the Snowfall – The Hannah Barberas
The Hannah Barberas play DIY indie pop loaded with sharp melodies and hooks you could hang your Santa hat on. “Can You Hear the Snowfall?” will be part of a vinyl compilation of B-sides and EP tracks planned for 2024 on the Spinout Nuggets label.
Christmas is Coming (We all Know the Score) – Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard
A rollicking glammed-up track that has a proper pop at the commercialisation of Christmas. Singer Tom Rees declaring this 2020 release a ‘sarcastic song about capitalism’.
The Salvation Army Band Plays – Helen Love
The legendary Helen Love has dabbled with Christmas music on and off, including on their cover of the Ramone’s “Merry Christmas (I Don’t Want to Fight”). This track, released in 2012, features producer, songwriter and musician Ricardo Autobahn.
Ice and Snow – Red Shoe Diaries
Nottingham’s Red Shoe Diaries has played at Indietracks and Edinburgh Popfest. They previously released music through Fika Recordings, a DIY vinyl and cassette label. This track was released in 2012 and is something of a lost classic.
Fell in Love at Christmas – The Photocopies
Sean Turner, a Londoner based in Michigan, maybe the hardest working person in showbiz. In the last year or so, he has released Pop Trivia a 45-track retrospective and Triple Decker a 39-track follow up on the Subjangle label.
The Sound of Snow – Math and Physics Club
All Music has a nice line on the band, which I can’t top: “Sweet and earnest indie-pop from a group of sweater clad fellows from the Pacific Northwest”. This track can be found on the B-side of “Jimmy Had a Polaroid” and on In This Together: EPs, B-Sides, Rarities and Unreleased Songs 2005-2015.
Christmas Has Come – Man Behind Tree
Berlin’s Hans Forster featured on Volume I in the guise of Hanemoon and he returns here with a track from one of his many other projects, Man Behind Tree. Described by Rolling Stone as purveyors of “sunny Westcoast melancholia”.
Merry, Merry Christmas – El Gato Roboto
Chicago’s El Gato Roboto play a frothy mix of Garage Rock, Power Pop and Space Rock. This track was released back in 2019.
Nadolig, Pwy a Wyr? – Swansea Sound
Swansea Sound kicked off Vol I, so it’s great to have this underground super group (Hue Williams-The Pooh Sticks, Amelia Fletcher-Tallulah Gosh, Rob Pursey-Heavenly & Ian Button-Death in Vegas) back again. The vocal is provided by Catrin Saran James, formally of The Loves.
I Fell in Love on Christmas Day – Caleb Nichols
This ballad is included on It’s Hard to Dance When It’s Cold and There’s no Music: Kill Rock Stars Winter Holiday Album Volume 2 and is also the closing track on Caleb’s 2022 album, Ramon.
Ho Ho It’s Christmas Again – Wicketkeeper
The band makes no secret of how this Xmas ditty came about: “The story is we got asked to demo a tune to pitch for a TV ad. When they didn’t use it (boo, British Telecom), we thought it would be funny to re-record the vocals, add some sleigh bells and plop it down your chimneys”.
Grief of a (Frozen) Sailor – Jetstream Pony
Fronted by Beth Arzy (Trembling Blue Stars and featuring Shaun Charman (The Wedding Present). This track originally appeared as a Snowflake Singles Club (a specialist Dutch Xmas label) selection back in 2020.
All I Got for Christmas Was This Lousy Boy – Bunnygrunt
Missouri’s Bunnygrunt has been around since 1993, although they did take a break between 1998 and 2003. Leading exponents of ‘Cuddlecore’, they were once labelled by All Music as ‘the world’s cutest band’.
I Want New Ramones Songs for Christmas – Vista Blue
Vista Blue is a rock band based in Nashville and rooted in New Orleans. This is one of many festive tunes the band has released and was included in their Keep it all Year EP (2019).
Advent Calendar – Valentina Way
A Charlie Darling composition given an Xmas makeover on the Balham band’s Advent Calendar EP (2022). With five mixes to choose from, I’ve opted for the ‘Candlelight’ version, which should only be played in absolute darkness, save for the lights on your Christmas tree.
Sleep Sound – Bjéar (featuring Ella Ion)
Adelaide’s Bjéar released A Christmas with Friends Vol 1 & Vol II in November last year. A stunning mix of standards and originals, it found favour with the peerless Christmas Underground, who described the mesmerising “Sleep Sound” as a “sonic hug”.
Christmas in Love  –  Euros Childs
Euros Childs, former frontman with the legendary outfit Gorki’s Zygotic Mwnci and current keyboards player with the legendary Teenage Fanclub, released his 20th solo studio album Curries last year. ‘Christmas in Love’ is taken from the album Sweetheart, released in 2015.
Have Yourself a Merry Indie Christmas is available now via Bandcamp.

Today’s compilation:
The Golden Age of Underground Radio 1989 Psychedelic Rock / Folk-Rock / Acid Rock / Blues-Rock / Hard Rock
Here's an excellent concept for a compilation that showcases legendary radio DJ Tom Donahue, a pioneer of a format on the FM band called free-form radio that gave DJs the freedom to play whatever they wanted and didn't hew closely at all to the top-40 programming standard. Donahue had originally found success in the 50s in Philadelphia, but after being embroiled in a payola scandal, he eventually moved out west, where he would do some top-40 radio work for AM station KYA in San Francisco, before swearing off both the format and the AM band entirely in a scathing article he wrote for Rolling Stone in 1967. He then proceeded to gradually take over a predominantly foreign-language station in the area, KMPX, and had it re-programmed fully as the country's first "alternative" free-form station after the last contract for a foreign-language show had expired in August. Then, following a fallen out KPMX strike, a bunch of Donahue's staffers were hired at another San Fran station called KSAN, where he would soon follow, and then launch his own show in May of '68. And in 1996, 21 years after he had suffered from a tragically fatal heart attack, Donahue became one of the only non-musicians to have ever been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
So, this album here attempts to re-create one of Tom Donahue's very own KSAN broadcasts, by pulling songs from the late 60s and early 70s that he played on the air, while also intercutting the music with his own recorded banter. That means in addition to his terrific psychedelic selections, you also get to hear him introduce songs and read some interesting ads that were catered to his countercultural San Franciscan audience at the time too. The CD's pretty much as authentic of an experience as you can get without listening to an actual recorded copy of one of his shows, but try not to put it into heavy rotation, because even though he had a great radio voice, hearing those same ads and dialogue every time *will* get old quickly.
Every single song on here is fantastic though, and, in sum, it really reflects how freewheeling and creative psychedelic rock music could get back then. Plus, the collection also shows just how free free-form radio actually was. Donahue would certainly play some big hits, like Donovan's "Hurdy Gurdy Man," a tremendous 1968 bit of folk-rock psychedelia that landed at #5 in the States and very well may have also led to the formation of Led Zeppelin, as it has Jimmy Page, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones on it. But Donahue would also do things like play a full, uninterrupted, 11-minute version of the Chambers Brothers' afro-psych classic, "Time Has Come Today," which is way too long for your typical mainstream commercial station. And in addition to that, he'd also just play non-single cuts off of different albums, as well as songs that barely grazed Billboard's Hot 100 chart, like a real thick and hazy 1970 tune by San Francisco's Quicksilver Messenger Service called "What About Me," that's replete with a bunch of different instruments, and literally scraped the bottom of the Hot 100 as it managed to only peak at that #100 spot.
So, while that late 60s-early 70s period was a time of free love, social change, and radical political awakenings, that same spirit also made its way onto the FM dial as well, where you could hear DJs like Tom Donahue freeing their own selves from the shackles of commercial radio, and doing what DJs have always seemingly longed to do, which is play whatever the hell it is that they feel like playing, regardless of how popular or financially-backed the song that they want to select is 🤘.
Someone hire me to do this, please! I'll throw my enormous and eclectic Favorites playlist on shuffle and it'll be such a weird and wild time that's full of obscure goodies, I promise! 🥺
Highlights:
Spirit - "Fresh Garbage" The Chambers Brothers - "Time Has Come Today" The Byrds - "So You Want to Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star" The Youngbloods - "Get Together" Leon Russell - "Shoot Out on the Plantation" Joe Cocker - "Delta Lady" Donovan - "Atlantis" Donovan - "Hurdy Gurdy Man" The Youngbloods - "Darkness, Darkness" Ten Years After - "I'd Love to Change the World" Canned Heat - "On the Road Again" Quicksilver Messenger Service - "What About Me" Lee Michaels - "Do You Know What I Mean" The Amboy Dukes - "Scottish Tea"

Reader Request: Nightlife in the City of Angels.
Los Angeles is a sprawling city, so there’s no single neighborhood or core when it comes to entertainment and clubbing—which just means there’s more to explore. Many of the city’s best venues are off the beaten path, nestled among warehouses in industrial districts or clustered among restaurants or auto-shops in semi-residential neighbourhoods.
Going out in Los Angeles has always been a choose-your-own-adventure affair: you can go for the Hollywood glam, the dive-bar grit, the pool party mayhem, or even all three—or more—in one night. Once you really get to know Los Angeles, the possibilities are endless.
Dance Clubs
Tumblr media
Hot new nightclubs are constantly launching and re-launching in Los Angeles. A unique vision, celebrity DJs, and lots of promotion attract the hottest crowds to L.A.’s dance clubs. If you love a crowded dance floor, bottle service and DJs playing the best EDM and hip-hop music, try Exchange in Downtown or Playhouse in Hollywood. You can go sky high at Elevate Lounge, where club-goers dance the night away among L.A.'s tallest skyscrapers.
For a more eclectic night out, try the Crocker Club, where an original bank vault door serves as the velvet rope at this exquisitely restored Downtown landmark, and adherence to the strict dress code is your key to pass into the spacious club’s labyrinth of exciting rooms and bars, each with a unique name and atmosphere. Try The Mayan for some salsa, meringue and other Latin-style dance rhythms, or visit the always hot Conga Room at L.A. LIVE for world dance music.
Drinks
Tumblr media
If dancing isn’t your thing but a good drink is right up your alley, L.A. has a great mix of bars and lounges to try. For a stylish, international scene, check out Downtown’s The Rooftop at the Standard. With one of the best panoramic views in all of Downtown and beyond, it provides a red AstroTurf deck, bar, outdoor fireplace, waterbed pods and sculptured topiary. Also in Downtown in an industrial cathedral, The Edison serves hand-crafted cocktails and eclectic bar bites in a setting that blends art, science and industry, highlighting the old world style and a sense of romance. In the Financial District, the Library Bar features an encyclopedic and esoteric selection of beers and wines to tempt any connoisseur.
Head over to the Westside for Skybar at the Mondrian in West Hollywood for poolside cocktails and fun crowds. At Universal CityWalk Hollywood, the nightlife options are endless, but make sure to stop by Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville for live music and island fun.
Live Entertainment
Tumblr media
Los Angeles comes alive at night with performances by emerging artists and the biggest names in music. L.A. LIVE, Downtown L.A.'s multi-billion dollar entertainment complex offers live shows at Microsoft Theater and The Novo, while the GRAMMY Museum's soundstage features more intimate, exclusive concerts.
The El Rey Theatre is the destination for alternative, cutting-edge bands and special events. A legendary L.A. Art Deco landmark, The Wiltern, presents an incredibly diverse array of performances from alternative to jazz and comedy.
All in all, Los Angeles sets the standard for world-class nightlife.  Dance clubs, live music and comedy venues, cocktail lounges and sports bars — the list of places to enjoy after-dark excitement in Los Angeles is endless, so head out tonight and experience the best of L.A. nightlife!

Rebel Rebel
Notes: Hey! I wrote something?? Okay, this one goes out to @elf-scones-research for being there and listening to me rant about this for like months. Love ya bby! Without further ado, the Radio Rebel AU I’ve been planning for months.
Summary: Small, gay, well-mannered Eddie Kaspbrak has a secret. More specifically, a secret identity. By day, he stays quiet and hangs out with the self-proclaimed Losers Club, but by night, he's the smooth talking anonymous DJ 'Radio Rebel'. The genius part of it all? No one would ever suspect it. Only now, Eddie's long time crush Richie Tozier is in the picture, and there's more at stake than just his podcasted radio show.
Pairings: Reddie, Stanlon, possible Benverly
Chapter: One/Six
Word Count: 3883
Warnings: Sonia Kaspbrak. Just,,,, Sonia Kaspbrak.
Eddie flipped on his earmuffs. He checked the voice modifier. He took a deep breath. Here we go again he thought as he hit ‘Record’.
He supposed it was stupid. A bunch of idealistic bullshit, which it kind of was. But… there was just something so tempting about sounding like a bit of a smartass anonymously.
“This is Radio Rebel coming at you live from the underground,” Eddie felt something warm slide over him. He smiled as he felt it sink into his skin, felt himself becoming comfortable, for once, hidden inside his own skin. “You don’t know who I am, but I know who you are. Because I’m one of you,” this part always felt the best to Eddie. Hiding in plain sight, the thrill of it was intoxicating. He could speak his mind, he could play music and talk to people and be himself, without anyone actually knowing it was him. It felt as good as telling a secret, and it didn’t sting nearly as much.
“Before we get to a Bowie mix I made when I was bored off my ass in English, I just wanted to tell you how bullshit the report cards that came out today at Lincoln Bay are. So what if I don’t want to dress like I’m from the 1950’s? A low participation grade for short shorts, that sucks ass.” Eddie smiled. He was angry, yeah, but that's where his best stuff tended to come from. “But it’s not just the teachers, is it? Guys, we all talk shit about the school staff for putting us into boxes and shutting us down, but I thought, since grades were being handed out, I’d let you all know that it’s not just the teachers who fuck us over by judging us.” Delicate, ran a tangent thought through Eddie’s head. Fairy boy in the short shorts. “Jocks, outcasts, dorks, the pops, the gays,” Eddie took a sharp breathe from between his teeth. “We’re all so quick to judge. And, obviously, people get hurt by that. You’re you. You’re not some perfect mix of qualities that make you one thing, neither are your best friends, neither are you classmates, neither am I.” Eddie spun in his chair and sighed. “I do it too guys, sorry this turned into a tangent, I promise I’m not trying to lecture. We all have a power to change things, that’s all I wanted to remind you.” Eddie rolled his chair around in lazy circles. “Talk to the kid with the remote control car. Invite him to soccer tryouts. Ask the stoners for help on your math homework. Actively change the status quo,” he spun once more before stopping and planting his feet determinedly. “I dare you.” Eddie paused. “And I get it. Not everyone can do that right away. But this next song is what inspires me to try a little bit every day. Hope you guys like it.” With that, Eddie lowered the headset mic and spun once more to his computer, selecting the song. The opening riff to ‘Rebel Rebel’ filled his bedroom. He smirked at his own joke.
He loved this. This was his life, and for the first time in a while, he really, really loved it. This was his music, his advice, his show. Here, he could be himself.
Admittedly, at first he had been unsure. His music taste wasn’t eclectic or cool or obscure or anything people really tended to enjoy in a radio program. He listened to a strange mix of classic rock, even classic-er rock, and ‘80s pop. He didn’t know much about music either. He could clumsily play a few notes on the piano, (the remnants of lessons his mother had scheduled in his heavily drowsed childhood that he resented and shuddered at the thought of), but that was it.
All of this, he had thought, would lead to a flop of a podcast, so he had let the idea sit on the backburner. That had, however, been before the first day of Junior year, when Eddie had returned from the summer after coming out the last day of Sophomore year.
It wasn’t that he had gotten pushed into a locker or been beat up behind the school like the movies might have suggested. Instead, people treated him like he was breakable, timid and quiet. He was just so done with the soft stares and even softer words, spoken to him as if people thought that if their straightness was even a smidge louder, he would shatter. What was worse, his new sense of retrospect had given him an almost superhuman ability to see those around him struggling.
He couldn't help but see that even within friend groups, stereotypes prevailed. Ditzy blondes and rude jocks filled his thoughts for months, and it was little things that caused him to throw caution (and his fears of his music taste being inadequate) to the wind. He would give his advice and try to make a difference, even if no one would listen. What came to surprise Eddie was that it actually worked. His podcasted radio show, Radio Rebel, had caught on and, though Eddie wasn’t sure how, a significantly large portion of his school (and other schools in the area? What the hell?) listened to him every Tuesday and Thursday night.
He danced around with silly kicks and shimmying shoulders to the music playing from his computer, another show successfully recorded and broadcasted live, and began to gather his homework, set out his clothes, and get ready for school the next morning.
Though he had started this whole show because of the bitter taste school had put in his mouth, it was heartwarming to hear people listen to his advice, or to at least try to. He felt (in the moments he was walking through the school, seeing his words rippling back and forth between friends old and new and hearing his clueless band of loser friends debate the illustrious Radio Rebel’s identity) like a spy in the old films he and Ben had watched over the summer when the rest of their friends had been busy. So yeah, he was excited for school, excited to see that from behind an unknown persona, he was making a difference, and excited to spend time with his friends, who he loved with everything he had.
This excitement for school, Eddie found once more hours later as he stood by his locker with Mike and Bill at his sides.
“Ruh-Radio Rebel was a-awesome last night,” Bill said, leaning against the locker and sighing.
“I know! Bowie’s my absolute favorite,” Mike was smiling now too, the curve of his lips around his words giving him the appearance of sunshine and of sunflowers. (Eddie, of course, knew that his best friend loved David Bowie-it was one of the reasons why the man’s music had become a regular part of Eddie’s rotation).
“I don’t know,” Eddie said, hiding a smirk, “Wasn’t their advice a bit... idealistic? ‘Change the status quo’ is harder than it sounds.” Eddie was constantly undercover to find what he could do in order to make Radio Rebel universal and unbiased and, most of all, true.
Mike gasped. Bill’s eyes bulged.
“What? Of cuh-course not!” Bill declared, puffing his chest out and looking personally affronted
“Maybe they aren’t realistic, but they’re  inspirational. So what if it’s hard? Rebel’s doing a good thing.” Mike, instead of defending the school’s favorite radio DJ as he had done in the past, smiled down at Eddie with a spark lit up in the corner of his eye. His smile was playful, but it almost made Eddie wonder… no, Mike didn’t know. Of course he didn’t. Nobody would ever suspect the cool, relatable Radio Rebel to be the small Gay Kid who didn’t seem to fit anywhere. Most people actually thought Rebel was a girl, much to Eddie’s chagrin and pleasure. The voice modifier worked miracles. So no. Mike wasn’t acting any out of the ordinary. Everything was perfectly normal, and Eddie was projecting.
“Yeah,” Eddie agreed distractedly. “Wish I could be more like them.”
Bill and Mike shared a look.
“W-well,” Bill said, kicking up fear within Eddie’s chest. He couldn’t know anything, none of them could.
“Bill and I have been talking,” Mike’s voice was soft as he laid a hand on Eddie’s shoulder, but instead of sounding condescending, his voice was comforting in an understanding way. “We think you should talk to your aunt.”
“My aunt?” Eddie questioned, looking from one of his best friends to the other.
“Eh-ever since you’ve been living with her, yuh-you’ve suh-seemed more confident.” Bill explained, looking a bit uncomfortable and glancing at Mike, who was the best out of all of them at giving advice without making a person feel small.
“We thought it might help you to get a job at Slam. The two of you could spend time there together.” Eddie couldn’t deny that every interaction he had with his aunt (and the owner of Slam FM Radio) Joyce made him feel just the slightest bit more solid, the slightest bit more real. But a job at Slam, one of the biggest radio stations in Seattle? He was already so busy with his own show.
(A small voice whispering, delicate, you’re my delicate boy, the slick slide of honey down his throat, something in the middle of it all, the recognizable bump of a pill in its sugar coating, bird bones enclosed in human skin-)
“I don’t know,” Eddie said instead, “It’s pretty hard to get a job there.”
“But yuh-you’re pretty talented.” Bill said, bumping his shoulder against Eddie’s with a reassuring smile that had made their whole group fall in love with him at one point in their lives.
“Just think about it,” Mike said, his forehead creasing. “Your aunt is really good for you.”
And she was. Eddie knew this, he wasn’t stupid. Ever since his aunt and her sons (one of whom he only saw occasionally due to his status of being away at college) had moved into town, they had taken him in. They had taken him from sticky half swallowed medicine and a drugged dredging summer that had seeped its way into Eddie’s pores like sap to a tree, (so slowly and so entirely that he could think of nothing else), and had given him a strength he’d never known was possible. The immense gratitude he felt, as well as his unsureness, well, that only created a thicker barrier from them. In this reverence there was hesitance, and in all hesitance there is fear.
“I’ll think it over,” Eddie said finally, looking around at the people who could care about him without making him feel breakable, letting a smile flit across his face, small and genuine as he reached up to bring his two towering friends down for a hug.
“How can you even think in a time like this?” Beverly’s voice broke through their touching moment as she and Ben walked up, completing the group of five best friends.
“We’re so close!” Ben said, and Eddie bit back an inappropriate joke. That wasn’t supposed to be him. He wasn’t funny, at least, he never had been to anybody else but himself and his cousins.
“Radio Rebel revealed the biggest clue about their identity yet!” Bev squealed, taking Eddie’s hand and spinning him in a circle.
“Stop it Beverly,” he said through stern laughter, “What do you mean?”
“In last night’s show! Did you even listen? Minute 0:27, Radio Rebel goes to our school!” Ben was positively glowing and it made Eddie feel warm all over to know his small mishap had caused that happiness. “They could be anyone all around us!”
“It could be,” Eddie put a hand to his chin and tilted his head, “Mr. Dennis. Or, no! I bet it’s Principle Marino!” Mike laughed at his sarcastic tone and slung his arm around his best friend.
“I-if you kuh-keep that up Ben’s gonna get an aneurysm,” Bill said, linking his arm with Ben’s unoccupied one.
“This is serious guys!” Ben huffed as they began to walk to Bev's locker, located farther down the hallway in a different clump. “What if I like, spill my drink on them at lunch or something? I don’t want the whole school to hate me,” he bit his lip as if he considered that to be a very real possibility.
“Benny, it’s literally impossible for anyone to hate you,” Bev said fiercely.
“You’re so sweet Ben, nobody'd do that to you.” Eddie really hoped Rebel didn’t come across as a person who’d rat someone out to the rest of the school for something so small.
“Ugh, wuh-would you look at that?” The friends were diverted from Ben’s plight as Bill pointed across the hallway where Greta Bowie was standing with her lackeys, chatting and batting her eyelashes in a way that just screamed fake as she kicked Josh Halkin’s book from where it had fallen from his hands, like the book was nothing and Josh was even less. If there was something Eddie absolutely could not stand, it was a sense of hierarchy. And, okay, as much as he preached open mindedness, he was loyal most of all, and Greta had been so horrible to each one of his friends in so many ways that Eddie found it inexcusable. This was just a sick reminder of it, and Eddie felt a fire high up in his chest that pushed him to walk in her direction at the same time Bev did.
Eddie could feel the other three following at a slower pace and looked over to Beverly, seeing the same fire on her face as he felt within himself.
“What’re you doing?” Ben called, causing Bev to turn around and Eddie to turn his head over his shoulder.
“What Radio Rebel told us to do,” she responded, taking Eddie’s arm and squeezing.
“Let’s see how far ‘idealistic’ will get us,” Eddie said, feeling less and less sure about himself by the ticking seconds, but soon he and Bev were standing right in front of Greta and her friends, who giggled meanly behind their hands as if they knew something Eddie and Bev didn’t.
“Well, well, well,” Greta said, her voice pinched as if she was talking through her nose, “What do we have here?” She raked her eyes up and down Eddie and Bev.
“We saw what you just did to Josh,” Bev said, and Eddie bit back a bit of fond annoyance at his ability to cut straight to the chase, no preamble necessary. “It was kinda rude, don’t you think?” Bev’s voice was sickeningly sweet, her eyes glinting dangerously.
“Oh, wanna fuck him too, do you Marsh? The other four aren’t enough for you?” Eddie gritted his teeth, breathless fury boiling at the base of his throat.
“Excuse me?” he bit out, causing the heads of everyone in the opposing groups to turn to him. He wiped his palms on his shorts. Why was he nervous now? He wasn’t anxious with his friends when he went to make a sassy remark, and he wasn’t when he was in his bedroom speaking into a microphone. “W-what did you just, what did you just say to her?” Greta looked a smallest bit surprised. Eddie doubted they’d spoken to one another since seventh grade. “You can’t just,” he whipped his head from side to side nervously, “Just say that! Jesus, what the hell is wrong with everyone at this school?”
"Hm," Greta hummed, tilting her head to the side. "This Rebel Rabble," Bev mumbled 'Radio Rebel' in correction under her breath as she looked at Eddie in gratefulness and awe, "Is making sickly nobodies think they can talk to us."
"Hey!" Mike stepped forward, his brave, broad chest high and his kind demeanor twisting into something angry. "Don't talk about by friends like that!" Eddie's teeth ground together once more as Ben and Bill stepped forward as well to defend him, and Bev reached out to grab his hand, because despite the fact that his friends never made him feel delicate, their protective nature sometimes made it hard for him to appear strong to others.
That didn't stop him from being grateful to all of them, but especially Mike in that moment, who, as the school's star quarterback, held the most respect among their friend group with the rest of the school and caused Greta to back off with a small 'whatever'.
"Let's go girls," she said, whipping around and flipping her hair like she was the mean girl in a silly movie as she walked away from the school's resident losers.
"Fuck off asshole," Eddie said as he glared daggers into Greta Keene's retreating form, though Greta was a bit too far away to be within earshot. Beverly snorted, and with a sad smile, Eddie realized that once more, his friends had come to his rescue. When, he wondered, would it be the other way around?
“What is up my dudes, this is Trashmouth Tozier of The 69ers,” Richie’s loud voice rang out as he focused his video camera (large and vintage from the late ‘80s because Richie was Edgy like that) on Stan, who was standing at his locker, getting his books out.
“That’s not our name,” Stan deadpanned as he turned around.
“Yeah, I know Mr. Lead Singer Big Shot, but I thought it might be time for an upgrade,” Richie said as he balanced the bulky camera and went to throw an arm over Stan’s shoulders.
“An upgrade in a lead guitarist, maybe,” Stan grumbled, causing Richie to turn the camera clumsily around to capture his face within the frame as he threw his head back in a bout of raucous laughter.
“Oh, Stan the Man gets off a good one!” Richie’s glasses dangled a bit crookedly from his face, and his hair was mused into wild curls, and these two things matched with the disgruntled and slightly windblown looking nature of his shirt (which was brightly patterned and buttoned wrong) gave him the distinct appearance of always looking breathless. Perhaps this was what gave him the feeling of always being on the edge, and maybe it was what made him feel as if he was at the precipice of a personality.
“Shut up Richie,” Stan mumbled, shrugging Richie’s arm from off of his shoulders.
“What’d we talk about, Staniel,” Richie said, wrapping his body lankily around the camera to show off a self satisfied grin, the glint in his eyes refracting in his coke bottle lenses. Stan only heaved out an exasperated sigh, his face taking on a sour pinch. “Go on, say it!”
“Hi, we’re Fight or Flight, and we’re gonna tear up prom,” Stan began and tapered off, wincing and shaking his head, as if wondering why he had become friends with Richie in the first place, “Just like Richie tore up your mom last night.” Richie let out large guffawing laughs.
“Would’ya look at that! Stanny’s really got it in him!” Stan put his head in his hands, and removed it a second later to turn to the camera.
“I lost my dignity for twenty dollars.” Richie laughed nonetheless.
“Twenty dollars well spent!” he hollered, and before Stan could release the cutting remark that sat on his tongue, Greta was strutting up to them.
“Hiya Richie,” she giggled, a fake little thing that was too high in pitch to sit right with Richie, “Hi Richie’s camera,” Stan cleared his throat, and Greta turned, her face flashing disdain before molding back up into positivity. “Uris.”
Richie rolled his eyes. Greta, he knew, was a certified bitch. He wasn’t stupid. He knew about how she bullied Stan in middle school. He knew she’d trashed the yearbook club’s classroom because the student editor had had the guts to tell her to shove it. He saw how she treated everyone in school, and Richie hated it. What made his blood boil nearly more than anything else, though, was the particular fixation she had on a specific band of students, a group of self proclaimed Losers. It wasn’t like Richie would ever admit it, but for the past year and a half, he’d been getting closer to the, again self proclaimed, Losers Club, and he liked to consider at least some of them to be his friends.
And then there was the case of Eddie Kaspbrak, but Richie tried his very hardest not to think about that. Greta had been a bitch to him for years upon years, though Richie didn’t know how anyone could do anything other than respect the guy.
“What do you want Greta?” he asked, his voice flat.
“Just to say hi,” she giggled, twisting her hair around her finger with something dangerous glinting in her eyes. “Come on girls.”
With that, she crooked her finger and had her friends trailing behind her. Richie shut off the camera.
“I don’t know what the fuck her problem is,” he muttered as he walked over to Stan. He looped his arm casually around Stan’s shoulders, because while Stan pulled away mockingly and made a face as if to tell Richie he was disgusted by him, Richie knew his best friend appreciated the contact every once in a while.
“Yeah, yeah, you have a massive friend crush on the Losers Club,” Stan said, rolling his eyes with a fond smile. Richie scoffed, affronted.
“They gave themselves an iconic name, they take no shit, and they’re just as obsessed with Radio Rebel as we are!” he gushed.
“As you are,” Stan muttered. Richie went on, ignoring him.
“And don’t act like you aren’t head over heels for Mike Hanlon,” Richie said, smacking his lips together to making over exaggerated kissing noises.
“Beep beep, Tozier.” Stan said as they walked to the pre-calc class they shared first period, his cheeks tinted pink. Richie laughed at the familiar phrase and nudged his best friend fondly. Stan had English with Mike Hanlon, the school quarterback and founder of the art club. The boy was one of the sweetest people in the school, and Stan tended to talk about him non-stop on days when he had English class.
The two boys continued on their way, joking with each other and feigning annoyance. They had been best friends for years, and while they got on each others' nerves often, they had each others’ backs.
As they passed by the losers, Richie’s eyes were drawn to the figure of Eddie Kaspbrak, whose arms were moving all around in a way that spoke of a passionate conversation. Richie smiled a bit, and tore his gaze away.
With lingering thoughts of Eddie in his head, he turned back to Stan, who was pulling up last night’s Radio Rebel broadcast. Stan offered his an earbud, which he readily took, searching for a distraction.
As the distinctive filtered voice of Rebel drifted into one ear and the precalculus classroom loomed at the end of the hall, Richie glanced over at his best friend, the comforting weight of normalcy settling down on him.
Just a normal day, Richie thought to himself, smiling at Rebel’s words.
Little did he know just how much could change in one day.

Is The JBL Clip 4 Worth Your Money?
There are so many small Bluetooth speakers available, it’s hard to not say to yourself, “Oh, screw it!”, and buy the first one that sells for what you want to spend. That kind of thinking could be a mistake because there is a lot of good to great speakers selling at good to great prices. One such speaker is the new JBL Clip 4 ultra-portable waterproof speaker. The question is, “Is it good or is it great?”The Clip 4’s audio upgrade doesn’t come without a few drawbacks. It lost some features in the redesign, no longer including a 3.5mm input or an internal microphone for taking calls directly. It’s also rather pricey for a speaker its size. But its mix of great sound and a versatile, truly rugged design, makes this a speaker you’ll happily transport from the confines of your shower stall to the hotel, the pool, and just about anywhere else you want to jazz up your favorite tunes.
Tumblr media
What it is? The JBL Clip 4 ultra-portable waterproof speaker is a small, handheld Bluetooth speaker with a built-in aluminum carabiner allowing the Clip 4 to be securely attached to a belt loop, backpack strap, or anything else you can think of. The Clip 4’s oval shape fits and feels good in the hand. It’s waterproof, dustproof, and rugged enough for inclement weather and even total water immersion. There are seven colorways available in the US: Black, Blue, Gray, Pink, Blue/Pink, Squad (camouflage), and Red. Charging is via USB-C.Who should get the JBL Clip 4? Bike commuters will greatly appreciate the redesigned carabiner on the Clip 4. Students may not have room for something like the JBL Charge 5, but they can still enjoy dorm-filling sound from this tiny speaker. Outdoor enthusiasts can take full advantage of the IP67 rating on their adventures. (Just make sure you don’t blast your music too loud: people want to appreciate nature too.) Anyone can use the Clip 4, and it even makes for a great shower speaker.
Tumblr media
What’s it like to use the JBL Clip 4? Design and features JBL has a habit of just tacking a number on their speakers as they’re updated. The Clip 4 is no exception. It follows the Clip 3 (still available), which followed the Clip 2, which followed the original Clip. I reviewed the original JBL Clip speaker in 2014, noting that not only was it not waterproof, but it also couldn’t even get wet. The new Clip 4 has a respectable IP67 waterproof rating (30 minutes at 3 feet completely submerged). Over the years, Bluetooth speakers sure have improved! The Clip 4 comes in many colors. My favorite is Gray because the parts look like their leftovers from other speaker colors giving it a hand-me-down eclectic look. The front and back of the speaker are covered in a durable cloth sandwiched over a tubular aluminum frame. Large silicone buttons protruding from the fabric on the front and side of the Clip 4 make it easy to select On/off, Play/pause, volume, and Bluetooth pairing by feel only. There’s also a giant, matching silicone JBL logo on the front speaker grill. A silicone linear grid on the back grips the speaker in place when placed on a hard surface. How long does the battery last? JBL amped up the battery life on the Clip 4: it lasts 10 hours and charges via USB-C. It takes three hours to recharge the speaker and there is no fast charging. The 10-hour battery life varies, and depends on the volume output. If you crank the volume to the max, don’t be surprised to find the battery life falls short of the official readout.Does it more durable and more accessible We’ll talk about the lesser aspects of the conspicuous new look further below, but one thing’s for sure: the Clip has never been easier to use. The boldly labeled control keys at the front stand out much better than those on the Clip 4’s predecessors, making it easy to adjust volume with the side keys and control both play/pause and song skip with the center key.Does it sounds good for its size? You don’t expect a lot from a speaker this totable, and frankly, while I’ve quite enjoyed the Clip 3 as my bathroom buddy for the past year, its sound always came off with a bit more ping (and a lot less bass) than I’d like. Hey, it’s just a shower speaker, right?Powering up the Clip 4 to hear its rumbling audio trademark, I was immediately impressed by the rich and full bass response. After all, we’re talking about a 40mm internal driver, the same size as what you’ll find within the earcup of your favorite travel headphones. And yet, what JBL has managed to pull out of this little thing is special. I’ve heard a lot of small speakers, and especially when you’re talking about budget models, the Clip 4 blows the majority (including its Clip 3 sibling) out of the proverbial water. Going back and forth between the two felt like going from AM to FM. Goodbye tinny bass, hello full-fledged sound.
Tumblr media
Should you buy it? Absolutely, this is one of the best speakers in my arsenal The Clip 4 sounds better, works better, and is more durable than the already-handy Clip 3. Is it the best Bluetooth speaker out there? No, and in fact, I own two speakers that easily outdo it when it comes to sound quality: the Megaboom 3, and the wondrous Bowers & Wilkins T7. That said, both of those speakers cost a pretty penny more than the Clip 4 and neither is as packable or as versatile. Most notably, the Clip 4 is the first speaker of its size that I’ve actually enjoyed listening to, and that means I’m going to bring it along — and be glad I did.The Clip 4 is an obvious choice for those seeking an extremely portable shower speaker you’d actually want to listen to. As the maxim goes, you should always be willing to invest in the things you use every day, and while you can get much cheaper speakers in this class, you’ll hear the difference. If you’re the kind who loves to wake up to music (or podcasts) in the shower — or wherever you find yourself — the JBL Clip 4 is a fantastic investment.Any of our winning options are quality speakers that will serve you well, but selecting the perfect one is about your preferences and ideal price point.Want more recommendations for the best Bluetooth speaker ? Episode 25/19 | DJ Natz | Podcast Mixes
DJ Natz heads up our final podcast of 2019 with an episode capturing ghetto, tech and progressive house music beats. DJ Natz is a relatively new girl to the DJ scene but certainly packs in the gigs and can be found playing at Cornwall's biggest events.
Tumblr media
Artist Interview
"...I think it's obvious the sounds that get me going; vocals that speak to your soul, filthy basslines, crazy percussion and melodic harmonies."
Hi, please introduce yourself to those unfamiliar with your work.
Hi I’m Natalie aka Natz. Conversely to all the other fabulous Djs on your podcast series I’m quite fresh to the scene. I don’t have years and years of experience under my belt but I hope to make up for that with innovation, passion and a fresh energy.
In fact it was about this time last year that I was newly separated and was saving up some money to get a divorce. I’ve always been into music so Dj friend of mine suggested I get a controller and learn to mix. I spunked all my savings on a second-hand Pioneer RX I found on Gumtree and spent my evenings on YouTube looking up video’s on Djing. I was hooked and coming from a musical background picked it up quite quickly; plus its easy to pick things up quickly when you’re doing it for 6 hours a day!
I love finding tunes that resonate with my soul. When I’m in the mix I feel it almost has a meditative effect; when you’re focusing on the beat and purely in the moment. It’s needed when you’re a single mother and holding down a professional job. I don’t watch TV as I’d rather listen to Podcasts from my favourite record labels and see what tracks are going off in Ibiza. When I got to a stage where I wanted to play out and share my love of what I was doing I would slack off social plans to record mixes to send off to promotors, spend evenings doing my research and getting in touch with the right people and work on raising my online presence. I’m not going to lie, a lot of graft has gone in behind the scenes, and while the vast majority have been supportive I know that there are some who hold the misconception that the female dj angle (aka tits and teeth) means I’ve been given it on a plate, which just isn’t true.
How would you describe your DJ sound?
Four to the floor that makes you move! I know that sounds like a cop out but I love such an eclectic mix of house and techno its hard to narrow it down further. When I play out I would describe the energy as ‘fun and feel-good vibes’ but I also love mixing things up to keep the sets interesting. As a punter I’m just as happy having a boogie to some funky disco grooves at a Glitterbox night to pulling a proper bass-face while listening to some industrial techno, so I don’t see the need to pigeon-hole my sound as a DJ at the moment.
Tumblr media
How has 2019 shaped up so far?
I can’t even describe it! I’ve been blown away by the amount of support for a newcomer to the scene. From local Dj’s giving me my first opportunities to play out, to running and promoting my own night in Newquay through the Summer. The highlights for me have been a tech house set for the Lizard Party in July and a soulful house set for Orbital Gathering. Just awesome people dancing to great music; its like a little family.
In addition to that I was lucky enough to meet another DJ, Danae B, with a really similar energy and music taste, who I’ve played out regularly with for B2B sets. Personality-wise we are like chalk and cheese but we get a lot of attention for our energy when we play out - for us its 100% about the music and having fun. We love interacting with the crowd, dropping tracks that get the whole room going and keeping the crowd on their toes. We are particularly excited about a couple of sets we were asked to play for NYE, starting off at the stunning Watchful Mary at Watergate Bay and then shooting off to play the peak time set in the main room of Dead Famous Liquor Lounge.
Plans for 2020?
Danae B and I have some great bookings locally to look forward to for some of our favourite festivals such as the Award-winning Great Estate Festival and Cornish Orchards Cider Festival to name a few. In addition we are delighted to add we’ve secured a monthly residency at one of the hottest venues in Newquay town; The Dead Famous Liquor Lounge. We’ve also had interest nationally so who knows what that will bring!
One gig I’m super hyped for is Clockstock in June which is alongside some of my fave Dj’s and producers, I almost need to pinch myself to know that its real, especially as its happened in such a short space of time.
I view Djing as an awesome opportunity to share a love of music with the masses, but as well as this I’m going to be looking at making beats of my own in 2020. I have a musical background, having been a keen percussionist in various orchestras and a drummer in various bands and jazz ensembles through my youth, so I’m hoping a knowledge of music theory will help me pick it up quickly and the passion will give me the drive.
Talk through your podcast mix.
I like to start off mixes with something attention grabbing like ‘shut up and listen’ so my first track, Short Dick Man, certainly holds up to that! The mix is a journey through genres with the first half featuring a ghetto house flavour. Then I take it a bit darker with some of my favourite techy beats, and ending with a more progressive sound. It includes some of my favourite tracks, but even though the vibe changes I think its obvious the sounds that get me going; vocals that speak to your soul, filthy basslines, crazy percussion and melodic harmonies. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I did making it!

‘River on the Rise’ by Debra Blake for Vegetarian Times, March 1988 (Part II, final)
Tumblr media
How the family took their vision to Hollywood dates back 10 years ago, to their final days in Venezuela. The family had little money when they left the religious community and River, along with his sister Rainbow, often took to the streets, restaurants, and even airport waiting areas to sing to people, entertaining them while trying to earn a dollar. River had been playing guitar since before he was 5 years old, and his talent became increasingly apparent to Arlyn and John. Back in the States, the family headed straight for Los Angeles, where Arlyn took a job at a broadcasting company to get the family's collective foot in Hollywood's door.
"We weren't going for the glamour or the fame of it all," Arlyn says. "We were going to take the kids' talent-which was so obvious-to us-and turn it into something and help make change at the same time. That's why we went."
Weren't they afraid that the kids wouldn't share their vision, or perhaps lose sight of it as the endless glittery parties began to welcome them, threatening to turn them into Hollywood brats?
"No," says Arlyn. "I knew they wouldn't get into the Hollywood scene. We had our own business to attend to, and it wasn't Hollywood. It was making change in the world."
River's business is making change, too. He's clear on that score. "If I didn't think I could be a part of a movement that could influence," he says, "and be a part of helping and change, if I couldn't help that through what I'm doing, I wouldn't do this. But I'm seeing that through this position-in this career, and where I have these magazine interviews- I can be an example, and I think that's important. In all the interviews I do, I say something about my being vegan. I don't want to come off as if I'm a savior. I'm only a very small part of anything, but I think it's important to be involved. I'm interested in meditation and finding spiritual fulfillment. But for me to just go off and devote my life to monkhood in the jungle would be ultimately abandoning the world, and the consciousness would be on a selfish level. I think I can do a lot more good for this planet if I am out there."
River is still young. Does he share his mother's confidence that he'll be able to withstand the pressures that Hollywood places on young people-pressures that make them grow up quickly, losing their dreams and ideals in the process?
"Being out there," River says slowly, looking around at the giant oak trees on the lawn, "you can go astray, and everything can be destroyed. I'm aware of that, but I don't think I'll get into that. Maybe I'm lucky; I'm not really attracted to all of that now. I think I'll be strong enough, but I do see there's that chance.
"You can't really make any plans about things like this, though. You go with the flow but still against the grain, not for the ego of it but for the belief of it. The only thing I have to show is how I live. The vegan thing is one of the main things. I'm a peaceful person; I think that's manifested through how I live. I don't start trouble. But time will tell."
River has moved around a lot over the years. He was born in Oregon, went with the family to South America as a young child, and has lived in countless California towns. He's traveled-sometimes with only part of the family-to different countries to film on location. Just before last Thanksgiving the whole family moved to Florida, where they now reside. They wanted to leave the Hollywood scene and revive ideals about living in the country.
Florida winter afternoons are warm, and River spends hours in the garage, hunched over his new 12-string guitar. His hands are square and strong, and after so many years they're used to playing the chords that sound good to him. He has the guitar plugged into an amplifier, and the rock rhythms echo out in the yard. He's not in school (he was privately tutored for most of his life), and he says he's not interested in working until the summer. These days he's mostly hanging around, traveling a bit, hoping a bass guitarist will read the signs he placed around the University of Florida campus. "Needed," the signs read. "Bass guitarist with young blood who's into progressive rock and roll, jazz. For demo recordings." River is looking for a buddy to jam with.
If he didn't have his acting career, River thinks he could be a musician. He's driven to it. "I love music," he says. "It's so much a part of me." The roster of his favorite musicians is long and eclectic; he's especially into early Squeeze and U2. But the rest of his list reads like the playlist of an early '70s FM station. "I like jazz, folk music, Bob Dylan. Older Bowie and old Roxy Music to fall asleep to. I like old Steely Dan music and some Pink Floyd. Old Led Zeppelin, too. The Beatles are my Bible; that goes without saying. And I like classical music."
Modern music disappoints River, and he doesn't like much of what's commercially produced. His tastes in books and movies also show that River has one foot in a different age. He sounds a little frustrated by that, and says things like "movies nowadays. ..books nowadays. .. music nowadays."
He doesn't see too many new movies, preferring witty, intelligent classic comedies, and he likes the great slapsticks. But his idealism comes through even here. "I haven't seen Cry Freedom [about Steven Biko, a martyred black South African], but it's top on my list for a real conscious movie. And I liked Brazil. I like intense movies. Did you ever see Brother Sun, Sister Moon? It's about St. Francis. I felt a rebirth after I saw that."
He doesn't find much time for reading, though he'd like to, but somehow he's picked up a lot of information on health and political issues. The novels he's read, or would like to read, are those that kids grew up on 15 and 20 years ago: Catcher in the Rye and Franny and Zooey by J.D. Salinger, Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, Richard Bach's Illusions, Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.
As for his own movies, he's hot enough to be selective about the scripts he accepts, and he's been pretty happy with the results. "I feel no need to invest in a movie unless I have an incredible passion for it," he says. "And one that will not only be good for me but one I can be proud of-one that's a benefit to society. I always hope the movie will, if nothing else, be a part of good art and influence people in a good way."
Up to now, there's been no compromising in River's work, and he's not planning on changing his record. Even as a child, no commercials he ever made endorsed white bread, and when he was in Seven Brides, the family made sure he wouldn't have to go fishing or wear a coonskin cap.
River still chooses carefully, hoping the ideals he lives by will be reflected in the characters he plays. He liked his character of Chris Chambers in Stand by Me, directed by Rob Reiner. "Chris came off as a victim of the mentality of his town, but he was a good person. He was a great friend, he was loyal and he wasn't an idiot-not just a big dumb l2-year-old. He was a real sweet guy, smart and intelligent. A good character."
The last movie he worked on was Sidney Lumet's Running on Empty. (Lumet directed Dustin Hoffman in the Academy Award-winner Tootsie.) River plays the son of parents whose antimilitary activities have kept them on the run for years. River likes the character but sees him as a victim, too.
"In dramas, kids usually are victims, either to their parents or to society:' River explains. "I want to get away from that. It would be wonderful to see someone already in a clear-minded reality take it from there and maybe go beyond that, show what can happen."
He can't say precisely what kinds of films he'd like to do or what kind of work will draw him next. Theater would be interesting, perhaps, and possibly directing at some point. Unlike many actors, he's not even thinking about who he'd like to work with. "I would like to work with Rob Reiner again," he says, "Maybe just a cameo role in one of his movies. But for the most part I don't think like that. I figure that time will tell, and if it's right, I'll meet the right people and work with them at some point." Outwardly, River has few doubts about himself, as an individual and as a Phoenix family member. "I'm definitely an individual," he said. "I feel very secure as an individual. And I'm proud of my family and what we've done together. I'm a product of my family, just like everybody else. These are my roots.
"I just want to live my life. Acting is what I love to do, and it's worked out this way. I don't know if it's God's perfect plan or whatever, but for me, not only do I love it and get great satisfaction out of it, but also I can work my beliefs in. I'm free to believe in what I do, and I can share those beliefs with others. Not in a preaching way, not telling others, but just by what I do. I find that very fulfilling."
After lunch-tabouli, nori, blue corn chips, tofu omelet, tahini dressing-River and Rainbow, like older brother and sister in any family, take the family jeep to pick up the other kids from school. Back home, River runs into the yard to swing on the rope hung from one of the oaks. "Hey, look at this!" he yells. While Rainbow watches, River laughs, jumps high and grabs hold.
A Phoenix on the rise.

PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2019: Ramping up the Style Quotient on the Final day....
New Post has been published on https://www.hidoose.com/pfdc-sunsilk-fashion-week-2019-ramping-up-the-style-quotient-on-the-final-day/
PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week 2019: Ramping up the Style Quotient on the Final day....
The Pakistan Fashion Design Council (PFDC) in collaboration with its title sponsor, Sunsilk hosted the third and final day of PFDC Sunsilk Fashion Week on Saturday, 13th April in Lahore.
The 20th consecutive fashion show in line with international standards ended glamorously after three fashion-packed days where 22 designers put forth their exquisite collections. This year PFDC also collaborated with the Trade Development Authority Pakistan (TDAP) to further the channel of communication with international buyers while promoting the business of fashion.
The guests walked down the blue carpet, sponsored by world-class water brand, Aquafina. With TEXPO happening across the venue, the show brought in international buyers allowing them to experience the whole process of hand to loom, to a high fashion set in the evening, making PSFW19 more exciting. Every season, PFDC creates shows that highlight the best of Pakistani fashion and this year was no less. With a wide array of talented and creative designers, the third-day collection showcases ramped up the style quotient. The day opened with afternoon shows where Khas, Sanoor, and Almirah displayed their creations. The evening shows included So Kamal, Zaha by Khadija Shah, Nomi Ansari x Tahura, Republic by Omar Farooq and a grand closing by HSY.
The Pakistan Fashion Design Council is extremely proud to host the 20th consecutive fashion week. Each year, they streamline the process of making the PSFW experience beneficial for stakeholders, benefactors, and fashion enthusiasts – both locally and internationally. Their purpose is to bring the best of fashion trends for each season, all under one roof, showcased by well-established, emerging and debut designers. PFDC works with industry professionals, designers, sponsors and partners that assist in curating a show that enhances their fashion week platforms while helping them maintain the standard of the shows.
Speaking on this occasion, Unilever Pakistan Limited’s Marketing Director for Beauty and Personal Care, Asima Haq explained, “Over the years, Sunsilk has established itself as a beauty brand that helps young Pakistani girls be confident. Since 2010, Sunsilk has been collaborating with PFDC and local designers to bring fashion trends to Pakistani millennials. This year the brand is moving one step forward and opening up more possibilities for young girls who aspire to be part of Pakistan’s fashion industry through our digital platform. We are always delighted to partner with PFDC and hope that our relationship continues to become even stronger over the years. The Council organizes back-to-back Spring and Fall fashion trade events as per the international fashion calendar. It leads the industry through creative influence and is strategically working towards improving the business of fashion while repositioning Pakistani fashion in the global fashion economy.
Khas Stores with Khas Philosophy of quality, innovation, designs and khas trend presented its Khas designer lawn collection. The pieces reflected apparel for comfort, luxury and Khas look. Keeping quality as a priority and innovation as their main goal; Khas proudly presented their wide range of refined products featuring a blend of comfort, luxury and visual appeal that left all awestruck.
Sanoor Introduced a unique eclectic blend of design philosophies, artistic tastes and styles from rich cultures of various civilizations around the world. Taking inspiration from all over the world, the collection unified them with the customary tastes and heritage of Pakistan. The spring summer collection was a combination of pastel colors, exotic flowers, paisleys and oriental ornamentation and much more with a touch of fine embroideries that gave a fresh summer feel.
Almirah represented class and sophistication and signified traditional ideals with modern execution. The creative designs were attuned to rich history and ran deeper than just latest trends. Simple and classically modern. The pieces were impeccably represented the brand’s core values of class, originality, and heritage. Truly, a trendy stitch in time. The collection had a blend of the palette of subtle colors and finest fabric. With a wide range and countless designs, the sherwanis, waistcoats, and formal suits sewn in threads of sophistication and embroidered with the glory of incomparable workmanship. Through the ensembles, audience relived a grandiose era of royalty. Wasim Akram was the showstopper for Almirah.
So Kamal presented a range from morning to evening where a girl can select anything from So Kamal wardrobe. In this millennial era, today’s generation is aware of what’s happening around, how to dress up accordingly to stand out strong. The collection presented a range which was youthful, fun-loving and free-spirited.
Having a palate of brighter tones – florescent accents and Deeper Hues, So Kamal created a wardrobe to cater a woman of every walk of life. They also introduced the Athleisure Line focusing on volume harem pants – cuff jackets and so kamal logo tees. The Evening line consisted of big emphasis on details of Sequence, cut pipes, gottas and beaded embellishments and floral colored embroideries. Ruffles and bows accentuated the mid-day look of the garments. Along with Ethnic-geo motives with luxe skirts, overs sized tunics – adorned capes draped gowns and textured crushed fabrication which enlightened the collection.
An eclectic collection rooted in the glamour and decadence of the eighties. A decade of bold style and even bolder women. The collection comprised of flamboyant yet easy to wear silhouettes featuring clashing animal prints in punchy primary colors. The ‘Wild Things’ glamorous display was a pleasure to watch and remarkably loved by all. Mawra Hocane was the showstopper.
Fashion powerhouse Nomi Ansari joined forces with Pakistan’s leading online sportswear brand, Tuhura Athletics, to debut a luxury active-wear collection. The limited-edition capsule, inspired by the designer’s active on-the-go lifestyle and retro style, featured a variety of silhouettes and colors. The collection ranged from head-to-toe animal prints, full monochromatic studio-to-street styles, fierce neon sets and must-have metallic windbreakers.  The display stood out as models strutted down the runway in athleisure wear while busting moves making the walk twice as exciting and fun. The 20 set collection, will be available exclusively from mid-April at www.tuhuraathletics.com. Hania Amir was the showstopper for Nomi Ansari.
A luxury street-wear capsule collection by Republic by Omar Farooq explored the evolution of symbolism from a form of basic communication to that of self-representation and anarchic expression. Much like the clothes that played on the balance between past construction and present deconstruction on a palette of subtle creams just positioned with fluorescent neon shades, challenged the contrasting idea of how the same symbol can be both favorable for one culture and baneful for another. Neon shirts, vests and stripes on single toned suits added a pop of color to sophisticated menswear sprucing up the runway looks. Sheheryar Munawar was the showstopper. The iconic fashion force, Hassan Sheheryar Yasin celebrated 2019 as his 25th year in fashion and one in which he comes full circle with the HSY brand. HSY’s journey has been one with his mother; his guiding light as a strong icon of an empowered and empowering woman. In an ode to their bond, the collection was titled ‘Rani’, his mother’s nickname and ‘queen’. The pieces were a clear depiction of powerful, independent, free-spirited and elegant women. The collection pieces were mostly all red and had patterns which were hand-made and the fabrics used were georgettes woven out of silk yarn, predominately based in a monochromatic color palette ‘red’ because the color has a special significance in HSY’s life as the first color he saw when he got his sight back, 25 years back.
Amongst the tastefully lit lighting and décor were famous faces with the likes of Nasreen Sheikh, Sehyr and Naseem Saigol, Amna Taseer, Wasim Akram, Frieha Altaf, Meera Jee, Mawra Hocane, Sheheryar Munawar, Alyzeh Gabol, Hania Amir and many more. The show was an exceptional preview of what’s in store for Pakistan’s fashion-lovers this Spring/Summer season.
PFDC is proud to continue their partnership with the global giant Unilever’s hair care brand, Sunsilk as their title sponsor and Aquafina as the Blue Carpet and beverage partner. The Media Partner is HUM TV, the Footwear Partner is Borjan, the Fragrance Partner is J. Fragrances, Transportation Partner is Careem, and the Radio Partner is FM 89. Featuring:
Artist: Alicia Michilli New Release: Back Down Genre: Soul/Pop
Located in: Nashville, TN
This song is...  I am a Soul/R&B artist from Detroit, my music is heavily influenced by Motown and Soul. My song, "Back Down" was tracked live, except for horn and vocal overdubs, which gives it a very authentic, raw vibe. This compliments the lyrics perfectly since they are very honest and uplifting. It’s a reminder to myself (and others) that even when life gets crazy and hard, we just need to lean on each other and keep moving forward. It’s about being resilient and remembering where you come from. The only thing that can stop you from getting where you want to be is yourself.
The music we are creating is... This release, "Letters From the Edge", is important to the direction of my music because it is the stepping stone to the next phase of my career. This is the first project that I feel really captures who I am as a person and as an artist. I believe it will open the door to a lot more opportunities to share my music with beautiful humans around the world. I believe a lot of people can connect and relate to the stories being told in these songs.
Right now we are.. I am most excited about my, “Letters From the Edge” EP release show. It will be on March 5th, at 3rd and Lindsley in Nashville, TN. I am also really excited to be hitting the road from April-June in support of the EP release. I will be traveling through the mid west, Europe, and the West coast. I’ve also got a music video in the works as well which should be a great time!

Artist: Chris Driver
New Release: 'Lightning'
Genre: Folk-Country-Pop / Singer-songwriter
Located in: Brighton and Hove, UK
This song is... With his emotive and captivating vocals and heartfelt lyrics, Chris Driver is a singer-songwriter based in Brighton. His debut single ‘Lightning’ was released in October 2018 and conveys his love of harmonies and a stripped back raw acoustic sound. Chris’s influences include Neil Young, The Beatles, Radiohead, Band of Horses and First Aid Kit to name a few. Expect an eclectic mix of folk-country-pop.
The music we are creating is... As my debut single, 'Lightning' is very important to me and a song i'm so pleased to be able to share as I start the journey of releasing my music as an artist.
Right now we are... I have 3 more single releases planned over the next 5 months, and have just finished mixing the follow up to 'Lightning' and filming the music video.

Artist: The Hesh Inc. (band) / Hesh Meister (solo)
New Release: Convention Hall
Genre: Rock, classic rock, singer-songwriter
Located in: Asbury Park, New Jersey, USA.
This song is... This song is the opening track to my album, "Soul In Exile 3: Love Runs Aground," and it is a frank exploration of how a relationship or marriage disintegrates from the inside out, couched in the imagery of a legendary old building on the Asbury Park boardwalk crumbling by itself. It starts off sounding like a piano-and-voice ballad but the lyrics soon turn pointed and are underpinned by organ, drums, bass, and especially guitar. Anyone who has been through the demise of an intense, sustained relationship will be able to relate. Be forewarned, though - this is NOT a simple three-minute pop gem - it is pure album rock, the way it was once made in the golden era.
The music we are creating is... This song keeps the album in the public consciousness, for those who seek this type of music. THE HESH INC.'s musical mission is to keep the album-rock epic alive during a time when trends have gone elsewhere.
Right now we are... Right now I am in the writing phase, making early plans for the recording of the next album, which will be a continuation of this one.

Artist: Cwiredband
New Release: Climb the Mountain
Genre: Resurrection Rock
Located in: Berkeley Springs, WV - Nashville, TN
This song is... about Spiritual Growth and Ascension. Where are all here to transform from our egoic me centered self (our Dragon) into an awareness of Unity and Relationship. It’s a journey. The song is somewhat epic in nature. Sonically we feel the writing, lyrics, and arrangements fits the life long process of always becoming more aware of our true selves and our true identities. It’s a trek that leads us to an understanding of just how magnificent we all are.
Right now we are... Working on our next EP. C Wired has more than enough material to record a full-length album, but both he and producer Addison Smith are really comfortable with more frequent releasees every 3-6 months utilizing the 6 song EP format. It’s more in tune with the way we consume and listen to music today anyways. Most people are not taking the time to listen to an entire album. They select the one or two songs they like and add them to their playlist. Working on getting booked for European and US based tours, festivals, etc.

Artist: Mack H.D
New Release: FotoLove
Genre: Pop, Electro pop
Located in: White Plains,NY
This song is... Daft Punk inspired; I made the beat and recorded this song with LS at our studio 5 years ago. Unfortunately, I never released the song due to fear. I am mostly a Hip Hop Producer I helped dozens create their own sound but yet I never really created my own, so I was afraid that people would simply hate the song because it is so different. The song was inspired by a long distance relationship I had with my girlfriend which is now my fiancé. The song is about a guy that is in love with a woman and he becomes this super fan that has many pictures of her. The whole song is about this delusional guy talking to a photograph.
The music we are creating is... This release is important to me because it's unique and it's different than what I usually do. It brings out my skills as a music producer. It shows that I can step out my comfort zone which is hip hop and still create a banger that I cater to every generation.
Right now we are... Right I'm working on the video for the song FotoLove. I'm also recording for my upcoming album which will be a compilation album that will Produce.

Artist: Houndwolf
New Release: Tempted to Abuse
Genre: Heavy Metal
Located in: Witten, NRW, Germany
This song is...  "Tempted to Abuse" is Heavy Metal song with a strong blend of Hard Rock. Tempted to Abused stands out due its organic sound, the straight songwriting and the unadorned and open-minded lyrics. The song comes along with a genuine and driving Heavy Metal sound, easy recognizable roots in Hard Rock and an in-your-face attitude.
The music we are creating is... "Tempted to Abuse" is the title track of the last released EP. The EP Tempted to Abuse (Label: M71) features four brand new kickass songs and was released on 27th April 2018.
Right now we are..  The band actually works on new material and plans several concerts. Houndwolf just started to work together with the All Metal Agency.

5 Branding Podcasts You Should Subscribe To Now
In 2004 when podcasting launched under what many consider “The First Wave” it barely made a blip. That’s because there was no way to get your message direct to listeners. They still had to find you. And when they did, they were anchored to their desktop computer for the listening experience. Then in 2005, podcasts could come to you in the form of software subscriptions to the audio. Still, they remained niche until the second wave came along in 2017 with the advent of iOS 11 making it easier to subscribe and listen without having to download a third party podcast feed application.
Now, in 2018, we’re in a third wave where it isn’t about when or where you listen, but what you listen to and why you listen to it. As brand marketers it is becoming more difficult to sort through the massive amount of content available about branding. Plus with Google announcing how podcasts will be indexed  in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs), audio is no longer optional as a go to medium for understanding our world. As a result of this influence from podcasts, we created a list of what we think are the top 5 branding podcasts you should be listening and subscribing to now.
1. Behind the Numbers by eMarketer – This podcast, launched in 2016 by eMarketer is a freewheeling conversation about digital media and marketing, and how digital is transforming business—and even life. Episode examples: How Amazon’s grocery efforts are disrupting the industry and a discussion on how top social networks, like Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram rank among different age groups so brands can use this information for their strategy.
2. Madison & Culture by Young & Rubicam. Hosted by David Sable – Media. Art. Advertising. Sports. Music. Film. The lines between commerce and culture are more fluid than ever before. Culture shapes advertising, advertising shapes culture and technology enables both. David Sable, Global CEO of iconic agency Y&R, talks to some of the liveliest, most eclectic individuals using creativity to connect with people. This is great for ideation when it comes to what creativity can do for a brand. Episode examples: Discussions with James Altucher, Shingy the Digital Prophet and Zeitguide’s Brad Grossman.
3. Adlandia by Laura Correnti and Alexa Christon – This is a bi-weekly podcast focused on the signals in the noise of the advertising/marketing/brand industry hosted by two of Madison Ave’s most disruptive female voices. If you want the ‘same old’ thinking overturned, this is an insightful listen. Each episode listeners will have a chance to meet some of the industry’s most inspiring talent and learn about the business models, ideas and obsessions they’re bringing to life. The show leaves listeners with new perspectives to bring back to the boardroom. A podcast dedicated to the renegades, the rule-breakers and brand industry-makers and shakers.
4. Brand Builder by SnackNation & ForceBrands – Hosted by Jordan Cohen and Jeff Murphy, this show brings you the people, stories and lessons learned from the most innovative brands in the world. Some very interesting brand case studies brought to life via unique audio storytelling. Episode samples: How the Best Brands are Using Consumer Insights to Win, How to Launch the Ultimate Influencer Strategy, How to Succeed in Chobani’s Highly Selective Incubator.
5. On Brand – This is a podcast from author and educator Nick Westergaard. It’s a perfect listen for brand builders, by brand builders. Each weekly episode features an in-depth interview with a branding thought leader or a practitioner from a notable brand. The conversations focus on the art and science of branding today while including actionable insights and tips that listeners can implement right away. They also publish a short 5-minute Social Sound Bite with the latest social media and digital marketing news, trends, and tips.
And of course, if you have time and need a sixth podcast, you can always check out my weekly 15 minute audio guide at the intersection of brands, marketing, tech and popular culture, Disruptive FM, the Culture of Business. In it we digest three trending topics, do a special segment (What, C’mon! Geargasm! Everything Is a Remix. Do You Even Read, Bro?) and note three things we have On The Radar for bubbling brand stories we’re watching. It’s simple, fun, shareable and thought provoking. Dday One - Journal | Extended (The Content Label)
Dday One’s Journal project originated as a limited self released CD-R sold exclusively at his live shows. The project consisted of four fully sample-based compositions created solely with a hardware sampler and a turntable. Soon after its release and due to broader demand The Content Label reissued the Journal EP in digital and CD format. Now Dday One revisits the project with a ten track extended version entitled Journal | Extended. The release features remastered versions of the original four tracks accompanied by six previously unreleased cuts. The tracks on Journal | Extended date from the same period, as the prolific Dday One was realizing a spectrum of sample-based experiments. Influenced by personal entries from Dday One’s studio journals (one of which is pictured in the cover art), the music shows the producer constructing new sonic possibilities within his unique style. Flipped beats and layered samples abound, placed in compelling arrangements that affirm Dday One’s pensive attention to detail. Tracks like “Heiwa”, evoking the melancholia of a traveller’s search for inner truth, “Meaning”, characterized by otherworldly tones and textures, and “Rhythm Section”, with its playful introduction to the cut’s instrumentation elements, are just a few highlights of this skillful selection.
Jon Fugler (XLNT radio show / Fluke) – “Quite bonkers, with is no bad thing. Always heartwarming to hear something that breaks a few rules.” Poldoore (Cold Busted) – “Loving the rawness of the drums and the sample section. Definitely bouncing to these grooves.” DJ Firefly (WRCT 88.3 FM – Pittsburgh) – “Super clever and creative – love it!” Belabouche (Midnight Riot) – “Wow, this is amazing.” Renegades Of Jazz (Agogo Records) – “Been a Dday One fan since the first release. Still love his unique, melancholic sound.” Graham Mandroules (Catalyst Recordings) – “Love the moody soundscapes.” Stickybuds (Goodgroove Records) - “Cool stuff. Sounds like old Shadow.” Aja Allsop (Ketch A Vibe Radio Show) – “It’s epic and eclectic. I love it.” DJ Osric (Black and Blue Show) – “Dday really knows a thing or two about sampling and production. Every track is so evocative. I lost all track of time listening to this promo.” Jamie Topham (CD Pool / Summer Soulstice) – “Nice mix of downtempo beats, classical styles & jazz vibes. Soundtracks for some lazy Summer Sundays.”

Frank151 Interview with Artist Jared Aufrichtig by Azaria Wassyihun  Jared Aufrichtig’s last name means “The Way of Truth” in German—an ideal Jared seems to wholeheartedly live by. It’s actually quite hard to put Jared in any sort of category; he’s a skater, a surfer, a photographer, an artist, an activist, and even an accomplished SkullCandy DJ, and fortunately for us, the list goes on and on. With such an eclectic list of talents, it’s hard to believe Jared committed six entire years to his most recent project, Expressions Book One South Africa, a 700 page behemoth of a coffee table book dealing with a wide variety of subjects pertaining to South African culture and especially its youth culture. In order to accomplish such a feat, Jared immersed himself into South African culture for six years, studying what they did differently from the rest of the world, as well as how they treated his several passions, hence the inclusion of skating, surfing, plants, animals, food, and others in the book. Jared’s works are labors of love. With this book, he hopes to educate people about the South African art scene by collaborating with 35 artists, from graffiti writers to graphic designers. Truly an original work, Expressions Book One is the first of a series of books Jared is working on, so expect to see many more editions in the years to come. You grew up in Long Beach, California but you've been going to South Africa since the early '80s. What is it about the "youth culture" that inspired you to move there full-time? At first I was inspired by the many fond memories of visiting there and a myriad of nostalgic surf stories of my father growing up with Shaun Tomson, coupled with the fact that the youth culture at the time was less exposed and raw. Also, I’m not living there as full-time now as when I was working on my book. For the past three years, I only spend about six to eight months a year in SA. You note on the book's website that you noticed a "major gap/problem for creative people" in South Africa, how do you hope this book and future books will help close said gap? I hope that some people get more from my book than just the beautiful and striking images. There is a deeper hidden narrative like in most of my work; in addition it exposed many innovators, places, and things that are now household names in South Africa. Although I’d also like to say that there is still a problem for creative people as well as solicited media content out there. The support for books, art, creativity, and these kinds of things is hardly even decent. It is Africa and there is an underlying constant struggle, so most people tend to spend money on necessities and not entertainment. While the more wealthy or able people who should and could support the arts and culture seem to mostly spend on Tec and hyped trendy items from the US or Europe. I think slowly things like my book and other publications coupled with increased media exposure will help build a strong support for local art and youth culture, as well as creativity and literary culture. You open the book with the quote, "What do we see in the world around us?" How does photography help you capture what you see as opposed to other forms of art? As an artist one takes things in and then represents the original perspective, thought, or idea in a new way. Celluloid photography and polaroid photography have a unique way of capturing a moment by allowing the photographer to use composition, knowledge, and their experience with light to manipulate and capture a short period of time. I’m not too sure about the 1’s and 0’s that make up a digital image, but plenty of people (including myself on the rare occasion) get good results and pretty pictures. Photography is also a very direct manipulation of what we see as opposed to trying to recreate something seen like other visual art. The range of categories covered for your book is insane, going from land to music and plants to skateboarding—did you find it necessary to cover all these areas in order to fully showcase South Africa? Yes, definitely. When I undergo a major creative project, most of the time the integrity and process hold the most importance. It was Expressions Book One, so for my 1st book I wanted it to show something prominent. South Africa is so rich and diverse; you need to look into many aspects in order to fully see the whole picture. Sometimes cats come here only looking to shark cage dive or see “the big five” and internationally all we’re represented by is violence, crime, celebrity adoptions, or Die Antwoord and Madiba (respect and blessings to the man!). Also, most of the stuff like art, music, surfing, and skateboarding are an integral part of my life and things I explore avidly. You seem to gravitate toward black and white photography—how has that influenced the subject matter you seek out? I wouldn’t really say I gravitate towards black and white photography, although I am a devoted addict. I’m fond of how the image can carry or express a different emotion lacking colors, and I also like the contrasts of light and dark with a vast range of grey area. In addition, sometimes the black and white can add a historic or timeless look. I do however gravitate towards celluloid and polaroid photography in my work, both of which I shoot regularly in black and white. You used celluloid film in Expressions Book One South Africa, what is it about that style of photography (as opposed to digital) that you believe captures the essence of South African youth culture? I shot the entire book using only celluloid film as a way to properly record and document the six-seven year period that I was exploring and studying, an important period of time in South Africa and youth culture that was also coincidentally leading up to a World Cup. A majority of my photography is shot with a plethora of old cameras. I also believe that the style and aesthetic of celluloid and polaroid photography is ideal for capturing the sprit and essence of the truest types of “being here and now” youth culture. What was the lithographic printing process like? How did you decide to use that method of printing? The lithographic print process is an amazing way to reproduce imagery. I was directly involved in every step, from start to finish. It was such an immense learning process and showed me numerous insights and experiences into printing and production. I decided to use that method of printing because I value and respect print and books, I wanted to offer a unique limited edition lithographic coffee table book about South Africa made in South Africa. As a bonus for being so involved in the books creation, the printer/publisher allowed me to utilize some of the original lithographic plates used to print my book. I cut up the massive sheets of metal with industrial guillotine into small pieces of art. I’ve given away an original litho plate to a majority of the cats with deluxe edition copies and then some. I had a big exhibition at Gallery Kalashnikov in Johannesburg during the SA Art Fair and Fashion Week in September/October, where I used some of the plates to make some new art pieces. A lady from the states who has a house in Florida bought the first Dumile (FM DOOM) Tribute Expressions African Mask. I’m busy making more and finding new ways to turn the litho plates into something really special. You've combined your photography with various graphic artists from South Africa for this book, how did you decide which artists to collaborate with? I always enjoy collaborating with other artist and love the way they’re all so different and have their own style and techniques. For my book, I worked with a wide variety of artist that I link up with while doing research and shooting the content around South Africa. Illustrators, tattoo and graffiti artists, painters, cartoonists, and even a few graphic designers who work with big ad agencies. Most of the artists I selected because of their work and presence in the SA scene, or maybe I thought they might work well with a particular subject or idea. A few of the artist designed layouts and were also featured in the book doing what they do best. How has working with South African artists (graphic, graffiti, illustrators, and tattoo) influenced your photography style? Working with other talented artists can be a good influence on perspective or style. I think a lot about bold colors and different lines due to my design and tattoo friends. I would also say that my art and graffiti background adds a certain grungy or edgy element to the way I try to shot some of my work. No everything is or needs to be so perfect or simple. I’d also like to think I picked up a bit of the African styles. What projects are you working on at the moment? Lately I’ve been so busy and blessed with wonderful projects, along with hitting different regions all over the globe. "Surfing Butter On A Hot Plate" is the title to my new surf film project; I was working on it in Jeffreys Bay for a few months earlier this year. Now I’m currently in Cape Town enjoying the beginning of the summer season and planning a mad states mission to LA/Miami/NYC. Soon I’ll be launching a Kickstarter for a book project with my dude from BK, Matt Dobbs aka Youth Waste. Also doing/curating a classic charity art auction with Paddle8 for some rad ocean/surf based NGOs during Art Basel. Definitely check that out, it launches on the third of December. And if you’re in Miami for Basel, maybe you’ll be a lucky one and get your hands on the Limited Edition Art Baseball Card Series I’m doing as promotion.
