Dive Respectfully - Essential Scuba Etiquette
Scuba diving allows for the exploration of a breathtaking underwater world, but it’s usually a shared experience. When diving with others, following proper etiquette helps ensure safety, minimizes environmental impact, and fosters a positive atmosphere for all divers.
Preparation Is Key
Arrive at the dive site on time with properly functioning equipment. Respect the limited space on dive boats by organizing your gear efficiently. Familiarize yourself with the dive plan and emergency procedures outlined by the divemaster.
Buoyancy Control is Paramount
Maintain neutral buoyancy to avoid damaging fragile coral reefs and to optimize air consumption. Be mindful of your movements and avoid kicking up silt that reduces visibility for others.
Follow the Buddy System
Stay within sight of your dive partner at all times. Communicate clearly, using hand signals or an alternate method if necessary. Be aware of their air consumption and limitations, and adjust the dive accordingly when needed.
Respect Marine Life
Maintain a safe distance from all creatures. Touching or harassing them can cause stress and injury. If you encounter a particularly interesting animal, avoid crowding it or monopolizing the view for others.
Follow the Lead of the Guide or Divemaster
Don’t stray from the designated path. Refrain from making sudden changes of direction that could confuse other divers.
By adhering to these basic principles, divers can ensure a safe, enjoyable, and environmentally conscious experience for themselves and their fellow underwater adventurers.

The Feeling of Weightlessness
For many beginners, the sensation of weightlessness is a highlight of their first dive. Floating effortlessly in the water, free from the constraints of gravity, is an exhilarating experience. This feeling of freedom allows you to move gracefully and explore the underwater world from different angles. It’s a sensation that stays with you long after you’ve returned to the surface.
Cherishing the Memories
After your dive, take some time to reflect on the experience and share it with others. Many dive schools provide underwater photography services, allowing you to capture the magical moments of your dive. These photos and videos make for great keepsakes and are perfect for sharing with friends and family. Discussing the dive with fellow divers and instructors can also enhance your understanding of what you saw and experienced, deepening your appreciation for the underwater world.
Practical Tips for a Great Diving Experience
Ensure you’re in good health before diving. Inform your instructor of any medical conditions and follow their advice.
Familiarise yourself with the diving equipment during the briefing session.
Respect the Marine Environment. Follow the “leave no trace” principle to preserve the beauty of the coral reefs for future generations.

🌊🎣 The Importance of Knowing Your Local Fishing Laws and Regulations for Public Beaches! 🎣🌊
Hey, fellow beach-loving anglers! 🏖️🐟 Let's take a moment to talk about something crucial – knowing and understanding the local fishing laws and regulations when casting our lines on public beaches. 🚫🎣
As much as we all enjoy the serenity of fishing on the sandy shores, it's essential to recognize that each beach may have specific rules in place to protect the environment, preserve marine life, and ensure the safety of everyone enjoying these coastal havens. 🏝️🌊
🐬 The Well-Being of Marine Life:
Familiarizing ourselves with local fishing regulations helps safeguard the marine ecosystem and the creatures that call it home. Some areas may have restrictions on certain fish species, size limits, or even catch-and-release requirements. By adhering to these rules, we play an active role in conserving aquatic biodiversity for generations to come. Let's be responsible stewards of our oceans! 🐠🌿
🚧 Respecting the Environment:
Public beaches are delicate environments that can be easily disrupted by careless fishing practices. Fishing on public beaches often means sharing the space with other beachgoers, swimmers, and water sports enthusiasts. Some regions might have designated fishing areas for safety purposes. in the eye of the beholder | levi & marina
TIMING: some time during the ‘beach please!’ event LOCATION: ... the beach. PARTIES: @exleviathan & @oceansrevenge SUMMARY: it’s a sea creature meet cute when levi stumbles upon marina looking like her big, beautiful octopus self.
The constant party goers on the beach had proved to be a great source of irritation. Marina was pleased that the mermaids, sand, and seagulls alike were feasting on the careless humans who dared to pollute her beach with terrible music and trash. At least back in her younger years, the humans had their festivals on the beach to make offerings to the gods. This was just debauchery and disrespectful. Not that she hadn’t waited out in the waters to add some of them to her skeleton garden on the ocean floor. Today, she desired peace. It’d been a long time since she was able to wander far past her cave. She enjoyed being able to swim further out and play amongst her fellow marine friends. Today was a warm and sunny day so she swam out along a deserted stretch of beach and let her glamour fall. She moved through the water and basked in the feel of water pushing through her tentacles. She admired the bass as they passed by her though she felt something in the other direction. She turned and saw what appeared to be a human man. She watched it carefully. There was no doubt she had the advantage in this meeting. He was quite small in comparison though he seemed to look at her with an almost… admiration? Maybe this one was more like the humans she remembered from the past who respected their betters. Tentatively, she reached out a tentacle to see how the human would respond.
—
Every day was a good day for freediving, but it seemed that fortune favored the bold on this capricious afternoon. Swimming out near the drop off, Levi was witness to the usual fare of aquatic flora and fauna, enjoying how they quickly adjusted to its presence as it hung in the water like a living ornament. Free from the burden of the usual scuba gear, the experience was much more enjoyable, though only for twenty or so minute bouts before it had to surface for air. Large synthetic flippers adorned its feet, ensuring it could jet to the surface to get a fresh lungful of air in good time, and it was after one such breach that Levi realized something beneath the waves had changed.
That was putting it mildly.
Staring at the specimen that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, Levi was left breathless. Or, would have been, if it hadn’t already been holding it. Its mouth hung open in spite of the fact that it was underwater, tongue blocking its throat from any fluid invasion. Dark eyes widened with wonder, and a hand outstretched as the creature swung a tentacle its way. The expression of awe turned to delight as the velvety, slippery surface of her strong arm grazed over its palm, and the other hand quickly joined to brush against the cephalopod’s suckers. Curious, Levi looked from the arm to the impressive creature it was attached to, and made a slow kick with its feet to move closer. Its gaze jumped all around her form, taking in her massive size and beautiful coloring. It couldn’t speak, of course, but the look it wore said all that needed to be said.
—
This one knew its place and this pleased Marina. It stared at her like she was the most majestic thing it had ever seen. She’d always felt most beautiful without her glamor. This form was who she was. The old humans used to adore her and bring gifts. The humans of this day just seemed terrified of her, which admittedly served her purposes well. Fear was a strong weapon and if she could frighten the faint of heart away from her waters then all the better. Admiration served her just as well. It moved closer to her and she was delighted. His touch was gentle and curious and the pure adoration on his face said it all.
Marina let the human observe her a few moments longer before she contemplated its need to breathe. This one could be useful and she preferred to keep it alive. It looked like one of their men, but men weren’t quite so bold. She determined it would fall unconscious soon and wrapped another one of her tentacles around its body. She sped up to the surface with the human in her favorite tentacle. If the human had any sense, it would feel honored, though if the gaze it had given earlier was indicative of anything, it would.
Once Marina broke through the surface with the human in tow, she let it free to hold itself above water. Still in her true form, she watched the human for a moment longer before she spoke, “You are bold for a human.” Her tone was plain with an air of her usual coldness reserved for non-fae. “Based on your lack of fear and fascination, I trust you hold respect for these waters.” If it answered appropriately, she would consider showing it her glamor. She could use a human who knew a bit more about the way things worked than she did, but trust was important. Her duty was far too important to compromise herself unnecessarily.
—
Making sure to release the air held in its lungs as the creature snaked an arm around its middle and dragged it to the surface, Levi gave a great gasp as they breached the surface, pushing its hair from its eyes and beaming at the cephalopod.
And then it spoke, which was something Levi admittedly had not been expecting. Its eyes widened and it almost let out an excited laugh, but quickly thought better of it. Listening intently, a shiver ran up its spine. “Oh! Nothing but the utmost respect, madame. The ocean was my home.” The grin turned a little playfully sly. “So you can attribute my boldness to the fact that I haven’t been human for very long.” It wouldn’t dare ask such an impressive specimen what she was, so it simply continued to admire her from where it was treading water. “I’m sorry, but… has anyone ever told you how absolutely stunning you are?” For all the ways it could have come across as belittling, there was nothing about the ex-demon’s tone that hinted at anything other than utter reverence.
—
If this face allowed for a smile, Marina would have offered it. While other fae correctly found her true form beautiful, humans typically cowered. Their admiration and respect always came with at least a hint of fear. She couldn’t trace any in this one. She floated alongside it and watched it carefully. “Good,” she responded with feigned indifference, “Explain what you mean by not being human for very long.” She hated the thought that anyone could just become human. Death would be a better fate. A life without that intrinsic connection to the ocean and the invertebrate that called it home would be dull and meaningless.
Stunning, it said. Stunning. In a tone that didn’t imply empty flattery. Marina gazed at it for another moment longer before she put her glamor up, allowing him to see the form more similar to his. She raised a brow now and explained, “By man and in my true form? No. They usually prefer this frame.” She breathed out a bit of a sigh. They really were quite exhausting and much preferred them underwater where their attempts at screams were muffled. Marina examined its form. It was quite a skilled swimmer considering his build though she supposed it was ideal by human standards. While visually appealing in some cases, human bodies weren’t quite built for swimming with such grace. “You swim well,” she stated before gesturing to its body, “Considering.” Her observation continued before she finally spoke again. “You may call me Marina.”
—
“It’s a bit of a convoluted story, but… I’m not from around here. This world, I mean—this, ah, dimension. I was summoned against my will, and trapped inside this…” It looked down at itself, frowning, “unfortunate body. I used to look a lot more like you, actually—designed for life beneath the water, where I was the biggest and baddest around.” Letting out a gentle laugh, Levi shrugged. “Someone didn’t like that very much.”
“Well,” Levi cleared its throat, “I can see why they like that one, too. But… still no contest.” Cocking its head at her, the aberration smiled. “Thanks. Latent ability, leftover from the many forms I used to take to visit this place, I’m guessing. Kinda second nature when you’ve been doing it for eternity, even if you don’t have the fins for it anymore.”
There was a beat where she merely continued to observe, and Levi might have been self conscious if not for its massive ego. Finally, it was given a name. “Marina,” it repeated, breathing the name as if praying to a deity. “I’m Leviathan. Or.. Levi, for short. The full name tends to make the humans uncomfortable.”
—
Marina felt anger on its behalf. To be trapped in another world and in a fleshy human form sounded like a nightmare she would never want to live. She preferred death to humanity. “Summoned against your will,” she repeated slowly, “Was it a human spellcaster that did this to you? I would be happy to drown them on your behalf.” Humans were hardly worthy of magic and far too greedy to be trusted with it. Her own magic was so deeply linked to the ocean, as it should be. She served these waters, but humans seemed to only serve themselves. “They robbed you of your true form. I hope that I get to see it one day.” She chuckled at the biggest and baddest part. “Bigger than me,” she asked with a quirked brow. Somehow, that thought was appealing.
“I think much the same. My true form is much more beautiful, though not quite as useful on land,” Marina explained. This more human-like body was beautiful in its own right and made it easier to enjoy time with other fae on land. “It is good to hear you have not lost your ability to swim with grace. Your form had to be difficult enough to lose, being more permanently parted from the water would be far too much.”
When it finally explained who it was, Marina felt her eyes widen with disbelief. She’d heard many stories of the Leviathan in her earlier years and was sure there were many more told in her years of isolation. Her brows furrowed a bit and she looked at him closely, trying to find any hint of a lie on its tongue. “Leviathan,” she said slowly, “Can you promise you are who you say you are?” If it was, she was in awe and more enraged at the idea it had been forced into a delicate human body. “I’ve heard stories of the Leviathan. If it was real, I always hoped to meet it.”
—
The offer was extremely touching, in its own way. Levi clicked its tongue and offered Marina a lazy shrug of its shoulders. “It was—several of them, actually. I’m thrilled by the offer, but afraid I already slaughtered them all. Wasn’t exactly feeling the most friendly when I woke up in this meatsuit,” it chuckled, though there was certainly a tinge of frustration in its tone. Still, the smile widened at her next comment, and Levi nodded. “I hope you do, too. And… not to brag, but yes.” It gave a wistful sigh, glancing at the blue horizon. “I used to snap naval war ships in half with the tip of one tentacle. Those were the days...”
The fish-out-of-water sentiment was certainly one that Levi could understand. “I hear you. Suppose the human form isn’t all bad, but… it’s irritatingly weak. And not built for the water like I was—like you are. But yeah, I still tend to spend as much of my time out here as I can, start to… forget, if I’m gone too long.”
A promise, huh? “Well consider those hopes realized, Marina. Demons, as the humans call us, might be prone to lying through their teeth, but not when it’s something important. Not for me, at least. What would I gain by lying to you?” It allowed a beat to pass, the charming smile returning to its lips. “If you’d like the word to be used specifically, then yes, I promise that everything I’ve told you is true. Promise it on my unfortunate little mortal soul.”
—
“Good,” Marina responded with a wicked grin, “Slaughter is a kinder fate than they deserved. Rage is an appropriate response to what they did to you.” That still left the question of what exactly the spellcasters had done. The only shame in them being dead was that she could not extract the answers from them herself. The ocean already had guardians, humans had no right to use their undeserved magic to interfere with it. The Leviathan belonged to the sea, not their will. “Do you know if they have any remaining kin? They may know something about the magic that was done to confine you to the ‘meatsuit’ they have placed you in.”
“It is irritatingly weak. Which is a shame. Too many humans are entrapping marine life for their own entertainment. It’s much easier to make sure they receive the appropriate punishment when they’re sea side,” Marina agreed as she took a moment to look over her arms that were much weaker than her tentacles, “I at least have the advantage of being able to bind people with words, though it’s been several centuries since I’ve properly interacted with humans. I’m trying to learn more of how they speak these days. On that note, I would be careful who you thank.”
Had it been anyone other than the Leviathan, Marina would have not bothered with the warning. She would have let it speak freely and perhaps bind it into doing her bidding where it could. The Leviathan was a bit of a bedtime story for her as well as a being of the sea she dutifully protected. It had her loyalty if only because it was of the sea like her. “People find many uses for lying. It is not something I am able to do myself, but me holding you in high esteem has its advantages.” She felt the pull of the promise and it stayed swimming beside her with ease and no look of pain. “You speak the truth then. You are the Leviathan. I have many questions. You’re a popular story amongst humans, but by many nereids, you’re revered so my first question is how can I help you return to your proper form?”
—
“None that I could find,” Levi answered with palpable frustration. It really did regret killing all of them so swiftly, when it looked back on the incident. Should’ve left at least one alive… then again, the demon had not been known for having a proclivity to think things through. It was impulsive at best, and while patience was certainly not outside of its grasp, that usually required a more level head—something it had not had upon waking in a foreign place, in a body that was not of its own design.
“Ahh, is that the war you’re fighting, then? To free the fellas stuck in the aquarium? That’s a noble pursuit if I ever heard one.” Cocking its head to the side, the ex-demon gave Marina a confused smirk. “Be careful who I thank? That’s a new one. Lucky for me, I don’t come into a lot of situations where I wanna be thanking people, but… the advice is welcome. As for learning how they speak, well… I can lend a fin with that. Think I’ve got a pretty good grasp on it, all things considered.” Probably all the hours it had spent playing peeping tom, but that was a detail that could stand to be omitted.
“That… is a very good question, one that I myself am itching to answer,” Levi agreed, shaking a finger at the woman. “Thinking the best place to start would be with some more spellcasters. Demonologists, if I can find them.” It gave a short, barking laugh as a thought struck it. “Bet I could find at least one lurking around the nearest churchyard.”
—
It was a shame no kin remained. Not that Marina mourned the loss of humans who were hardly deserving of their magic, but they had created a mess she’d take joy in making them clean up. While her connections here were lacking, she could poke around and bind every simple thank you over polite acts that she could. So many things had changed, but humans' carelessness with their words had not. It would take time and keeping her ear to the ground, but it was a worthwhile endeavor. She was pleased to hear it thought her pursuit was noble as well. Not all that surprising, the ocean was their home.
“Yes,” Marina answered, “It is my duty to protect this ocean and those who call it home. These glass prisons they’ve created for their own amusement are detestable.” Her eyes were stony and hard as she spoke. The aquarium felt like a personal slight and she felt justified for each life she took in her mission to end it. It also seemed willing to help. Given it was the Leviathan, she would give it the helpful tip on being careful with one’s words. “Thanking myself or others like me can leave you bound to repay us in some way. A way of our choosing,” she explained, “None of the others would look like me, not even my sisters take the same form.”
“If you are willing, I would appreciate that very much,” Marina said with a growing smile, “Knowing their speech patterns and culture is helpful. It’s easier to get the right words out of someone when you know how their conversations flow. I find I don’t understand much of anything they say or their obsession with flexing their muscles.” She was also eager to befriend the Leviathan, but giddy was not the impression she wanted to make on a legend. While its human form was in fact nice to look at, she wanted nothing more than to see it in its true form. Its true glory. She’d heard stories though she was sure they would not compare to its true beauty. Stories never did justice. Unless the Leviathan had happened to meet a nymph of poetry. “Spellcasters and demonologists. I’ve not met any yet, but I will keep an ear to the ground. Explore the stranger parts of town. Or churchyards as you say. Did you have any in mind to check out?”
—
“I see… well, for the record, I don’t think I’d really mind being bound to you,” Levi responded with a sly smirk. “But I’ll watch my tongue.”
An amused laugh bubbled from somewhere deep at the fae’s observation. “Okay, let’s start with that one. Flexing is—they don’t mean literally. If you’re flexing on someone, it means you’re boasting or bragging about something,” it explained with a grin. Fuck, what a delight she was.
“I’ve met a few spellcasters, but they’ve been largely useless. As for the churches, well… honestly, I hadn’t gotten around to it yet. Not my favorite places, as I’m sure you can imagine. If you wanna follow me back to shore, I can give you my number so we can communicate whenever—wait, do you have a phone?” Wouldn’t be surprising if she didn’t. It had taken Levi about four or five months to jump on the technology train, and even then, it’d been slow going.
—
“Allowing you to keep your free will seems much more fun,” Marina retorted with a coy grin, “And I only advised that you mind your words. Your tongue is free to do as it pleases.” It’d been a long time since she’d done anything akin to flirting and she found it was easy enough to slide back into. At least with the Leviathan who seemingly understood her ways. It didn’t hurt that the Leviathan was legendary in its own right.
Marina listened to it with a fascinated gaze as the waves gently rocked them. Its explanation made far more sense than the humans being fascinated with their biceps, but still seemed rather silly. “I see, though I don’t understand what short-lived and short-sighted species have to brag about.” It seemed it had picked up a lot during its short time in the human world. She wasn’t entirely surprised it had the intelligence to pick up on things, but it was something she admired all the same.
“Largely useless unless they’re meddling with things that don’t pertain to them,” Marina added bitterly. She’d met a few responsible casters in her younger years, but they were likely long gone at this point. She’d be on the lookout for one anyhow. “Ah, yes, I can follow. I recently acquired one of these mobile phones. I’d like to keep in touch.” Her phone was back in her cave, but her memory was impeccable. “Where are your things,” she asked, “If you’d like to grab onto a tentacle, we can take the fast way though I understand it can be a bit of a bumpy ride. I don’t typically hold onto humans with the intent of keeping them alive.”
—
Brows raised at her reply, and the ex-demon found itself pleasantly surprised that she didn’t seem to lack an understanding of flirtation like she did current slang. Perfect. Levi grinned, throwing a wink in her direction. “Ahh, careful what’cha wish for,” it teased, allowing the subject to settle.. for now.
“Not a lot, turns out, but they sure do like to try.” Of course Levi had had its fair share of run-ins with one human that somehow bested it at every turn and loved to brag about it, but Marina didn’t need to know about that. At least not unless Emilio became a real problem—then some backup might be nice.
Her way of speaking continued to charm the aberration, and as it glanced toward the beach where its belongings sat beneath the cover of a rock, it couldn’t help but smile. “Thataway, my dear. And listen—if I was built for anything in this life, it’s the bumpy rides, any chance I get.” It often behaved in ways that purposefully forced it to go down the path of most resistance, which was honestly sometimes the only thing keeping it sane. That mentality certainly extended to every facet of its life, and so it extended a hand to her, looking thrilled by the idea.
—
There was a pleased smirk upon her face as she acknowledged his statement. Marina was not typically pleased to see someone in its form swimming this far out but her instinct had been right. It was far too bold to truly be just a man. She doubted many could say they’ve met the Leviathan, let alone have flirted with it. Fondly, she thought of how jealous her younger sisters would be if they knew. She wondered if perhaps they had adopted these human mobile devices in recent years. The thought quickly faded as she breathed out a quiet laugh. “Somehow I doubt their attempts at bragging are all that impressive.”
Again, it delighted her. Marina supposed it shouldn’t have come as a surprise. It promised it was who it said. It was something extraordinary, beautiful– even if it was trapped in a human body for the time being. At least those wicked spellcasters had put it in an attractive form. It still could not compare for its true form that she hoped to one day see with her own eyes. “You continue to be a pleasant surprise,” she responded with a lilt as she let her glamor fall. Once she settled into her form, she reached a tentacle out to the Leviathan and tentatively took hold of it. When it felt secure, she burst ahead in the water toward the direction of its things. She took it a little slower than she normally would as she did not wish to crush her newfound friend. While this was different from her usual swim where she’d be crushing whatever she held in her tentacle, she found she enjoyed it all the same. She had the feeling they’d be doing this again someday.

The 144th’s Embark: Eviscerating Infiltration
The boltfire roared deafening barks through the underbelly of the black ship, the propelling projectiles hurling and destroying the scrambling xeno-husks. These Tyranid infiltrators - genestealers - were fast and wily things armed with impossibly lethal talons that can carve into power armour. However, where animal cunning and evolved lethality had it advantages, the elite veterans of the eighth legion were the monsters here. Whether of the Aquila or not, they refuse to allow these things to claim the unequal power of terror, out of pride.
The few to make it past the circle of mastercrafted bolter-supremacy handled by honed killers were met by murderous blades and arcanum.
The muck of fluids, gore, and corpse did little to slow the legionnaires.
“Inexcusable.” Helbane noted, swatting a Genestealer’s talon clean from its joint and reversed to crash its skull into a spraying pulp of fragments and brain matter. “What is?” A marine, one of the 144th’s more stubborn-living Night Lords by the name of Darius Heglain. Helbane never understood the use of surnames for Astartes. Perhaps a sense of belonging. He never had one, never needed one. His family is the Night Lords and they are the reason he is here.
“An Inquisitor allowed these parasites upon their ship.” He answered, “And they have spread to such a number, breeding or infection no doubt.” “Yes, it is quite an inconvenience.” Darius said with a mark of humor, dropping his first spent clip to replace for another. Expectantly, the crawling corrupted things scuttered for his temporarily opening. A trick played perfectly as he dropped his bolter for his neighbor to slap the fresh clip while popping the monstrous hybrid’s skull like a rotten melon with a quick draw of decorated boltpistol. Slipping pistol back into the flesh-leather holster, Darius continued his rightful work of keeping the xenos back with his fellow nine veterans.
All sides were secure, Sergeant Yamaf keeping the rear in check and keeping a combi-flamer’s eye to the multitude of eyes staring back that weren’t being assaulted by their remaining dreadclaw.
The Chosen of Helbane’s disciplined circle conversed their weapons for now, their artificer armour coveted from their predecessors or claimed in battle of the Zealous and Treacherous to be converted to Night Lord fashion by the Forgemaster back on the ship. Their bloodlust almost oozed through the joints of their armour, long have they lacked a proper kill and even if these hordes of Terminator-challenging creatures were the closest thing, it was only their Chaplain-Lord that kept them from wasting their lives and experience.
That was until the first bark of autopistol fire bounced from Helbane’s iron halo. Finally, the beasts revealed their more...variable presences.
The horde of savages was pulled open to reveal the charging shadows of gun-grasping monsters and behemoths thick of muscle and chitin. They wore the remnants of imperial guard uniform and slave-robes, but they weren’t human. As if it mattered.
The Night Lords didn’t break rank, they kept their methodical approach. Three of the Ten aimed their combi-weapons, the humming green of plasma, before firing salvos of contained suns and bolter fire with the others releasing combi-bolter vengeance. The charging aberrants buckling, burning and by their melting forms, collapsed with few to make through the charging savagery.
The largest heaving its power hammer high before Helbane with an ugly shriek for blood, only to be skewered by the Chaplain’s wrathful talons. The crackling blades that armed his fingers cut through its body like butter, boiling its insides and popping its vitals from within before twisting by the extort of power armour’s servos to hurl the lumbering beast as a personal shield to the Genestealers’ shots. Still, it moved and squirmed with gore spewing from its maw, an affront that Helbane ended with a heel’s stomp.
“Warriors of the Eighth Legion,” He spoke with hailfire on both sides crossing, bodies used for cover and war mastery unleashed in this highway of black space. “Do not relent. For we are the Masters of the Darkness, the Knives in the Shadows, the shrill laughter of Murder Personified in the name of He. Nostramo’s Honour-”
That always got a humorous chuckle from his brothers, their mirth heard in the vox-channel and Helbane’s own stoicism broke a slight. “Is ours to forge by these ugly bastards’ corpses, well…”
Another Aberrant was clambering up at their position, only to have a gaping hole shot through by twin bolts of plasma. “If we can find some good ones.”
These provided a dark laughter among his men, finding agreement and enjoyment of their Chaplain’s words. He knew they didn’t fully agree to his goals nor beliefs, but in the end, they were all appreciative and loyal to him. They were his wayward brothers in a galaxy full of hypocrites and he was their priest of justice, to find some ironic light to their dark existence. Helbane wanted no less in their exchange.
Then the horde came in troves, growing impatient and noticeable losing their numbers to the stubbornly calm astartes. What was there to fear in their darkness? Nostramo had no light, this was what a normal mortal would call ‘a good afternoon’ for them.
This was a tactic well used, the Night Lords had to keep themselves careful and simplistic in tactics. Trying to outsmart these things only led to unfortunate complications and lost lives, better to act like the exterminators to an exceedingly clever insect. Not hard for veterans of the Emperor’s Compliance against far-flung colonies and aliens that are now extinct by Night Lord blades and bolters.
The moment the first wave was close, the veteran squad lifted and unleashed hell to slow their advance. Enough for Nicolae and his Chosen to rise to the occasion!
The Champion of the 144th howled through his vox, pleased to finally meet the enemy with his singing blade. Unlike the typical chainsword crafted from the hands of Humanity’s martian tech-lickers and tech-marines of the Astartes, the Eldar were fanatics of the fancy and elegance. Even blades like this made hardly a sound but a high-pitched singing as the diamond-teethed tiny blades spun along its edge, appearing like a rainbow of contained light to effortlessly slice these hybrid-aliens apart as fine as a power sword.
Nicolae was a trained warrior and more importantly, a savage pit-fighter who used the collected tactics of his many defeated enemies; from the barbaric World Eaters and wild Space Wolves to the professional Ultramarines and flamboyant Emperor’s Children into a pragmatic form of malignant grace and murderous clarity. Even then, there was the Nostraman nobility bred from the foundation in his steps. He moved with sudden strikes, slashing and stabbing to make the bloodiest yet quickest kills.
To watch him fight is to watch a near second coming of Jago Sevatarion at times and it caused a short ache in Helbane’s chest. It is have been too long since he last seen the Prince of Crows.
“Tuili,” Helbane calls through the privacy of vox as he stepped into the fray with his arcanum crackling its blood-red arcs. “How is your progress?”
Decks above, the Terminator-Champion stepped onto the chest of the barricade Commissar. The pressure slow and torturous, already feeling carapace and bones trying to resist under tons of adamantium-framed ceramite. “We have broken a rather pleasant defense, Chaplain. They held the Xeno well enough and we have a measure’s way to go before finding the bridge. Maybe two defenses’ worth.” He answered. “Any casualties?” Helbane questioned and a cold chuckle passed, “If any of these fools died to lasgun fire, I wouldn’t call it a casualty.”
“Capture the bridge, don’t play with your food.” The Chaplain reminded and it caused a halt to the Terminator’s leg. Another sound escaped Tuili, “You know me too well.”
CRUNCH.

The Bestiary Revamped: Vampire Squid (HALLOWEEN SPECIAL)
Disclaimer: While this article is founded in scientific fact, it contains hyberbole and conscious exaggerations for the sake of comedy. Do not take my ramblings at face value. You can find the sources at the end of the article and tools for scientific fact-checking under the “Learn more” link on my blog.
The old article can be read here.
(I intended to post this yesterday but stuff came up. Anyway.)
Ahem.
Cue the spooky music.
*threatening organ music plays at unbearable volumes*
That’s right, dear readers, the Spooky Gourd Day has finally, finally come, and with it the nigh-endless Halloween shitposting that permeates this website every October like the smell of pumpkin pie did my house just a few hours ago, immediately before I ate most of it. (I still have like half of it left, but it’s cold now so it doesn’t have that mouthwatering smell unless I reheat it. And I was too busy watching old Betty Boop Halloween cartoons to reheat it. Anyway, I’m getting off track.)
Frankly, the obsession of internet culture with this innocuous holiday has always fascinated me. What it is about a day when you get to dress up all funky-like, go from house to house acting like an idiot, horf down all the candy you can get away with and watch scary movies all night that is so attractive to them youngsters? I simply cannot wrap my head around it.
However, it is a day of great significance to this blog, since this is the day when we celebrate the utter freakiest of the freakiest that can be pulled up from the stygian waves of the planet’s oceans. This is the third Halloween of the Terrible Tentacle Theatre, and for this notable occasion, I have decided to give one of my earliest poster children a much-needed revisit.
Back in the early days of the blog, when it was still called Hectocotylus and my content mainly consisted of spicing up Wikipedia and Cracked articles with swearing for the sick enjoyment of some 30 followers, the article in question was my first big hit among the people of the Digital Blue Hills of Hell. In the days when most of my articles didn’t go above 20 notes, this beast gathered up 300 notes by using its nebulous tendrils to reach into the deepest corners of the ole ‘web. Not only was this creature my first big hit in my career as a marine biology blogger with tone moderation issues, it would also fit in great as the main monster in a theoretical Universal Horror/Syfy teamup, which would be the Halloweeniest shit ever.
Ladies, gentlemen and other fellows, the vampire squid.
Before you even see this thing in full detail you can already gather that I didn’t choose it for this year’s Halloween special for nothing. Everything from the ghoulish dark red color scheme to the bat-like webbing between eldritch tentacles screams “cheesy Hammer Horror movies written by good ol’ Howard Philips”. And it will become even more evident when you see it in its full, glowy, betentacled glory.
This is how it looks like when you stare down a squishy, floppy incarnation of doom. This thing looked so freaky that the dude who discovered it, a certain German biologist called Karl Chun, decided to name it Vampyroteuthis infernalis. That’s Latin for “vampire squid from Hell”. Yep, that’s right. Remember the part where science is hard fact unaffected by emotion? Well you can throw that right out the window, because this fucker freaked its discoverer out so hard that he named it the vampire squid from Hell.
“The shit I’ve seen, kiddo. You wouldn’t believe.”
Even descriptions of this guy sound like they escaped straight from a 19th century gothic horror novel. For example, in 1925 the Arcturus expedition caught one near the Galapagos Islands and described it as “a very small but very terrible octopus, black as night, with ivory white jaws and blood-red eyes.” Even in the years of the Roaring Twenties, merely seeing the vampire squid was enough to bring out anyone’s inner Poe or Bram Stoker, apparently, which isn’t very surprising considering that it looks like Béla Lugosi had an illicit affair with one of the Star-Spawn of Cthulhu.
You’re welcome for that mental image.
While calling it a vampire is more than appropriate, the names “squid” or “octopus” are much less fitting. While intially appearing to be something of an octopus, it’s actually not one of them; and it isn’t a squid either, which left the confused scientists to place it within its own little private taxon, the order Vampyromorphida. If you know a little bit of Latin, that means “vampire-shaped”, which would imply that this is the general shape for vampires. So next time you read Twilight, imagine Edward as a vampire squid flopping around on the ground the entire time and I guarantee you’ll have a blast reading through several hundred pages of sweaty bloodsucker romance.
Unlike Edward however, the vampire squid doesn’t actually feed on blood. Dashing from shadow to shadow in the cover of a snappy opera cape and hunting for innocent young maidens in the night is the kind of energy expenditure that this malevolent mollusk cannot afford. Mainly because it lives (you guessed it) in the darkest, deepest excesses of the oceans, where the eternal darkness creates an all-year-round Halloween mood. In these waters, even beginners have a hard time finding the tiniest scraps of food, and have to resort to drastic measures to get by. But the vampire squid looks at those beginners and goes “yall are scrubs git gud lmao”. Compared to the vampire squid’s lifestyle, virtually any other denizen of the deep sea lives right in the middle of a goddamn cornucopia.
See, the vampire squid doesn’t just live in the deep ocean. It specifically prefers places called Oxygen Minimum Zones (OMZ), which sounds more like the hardest Sonic level ever than any serious place which can support life. OMZs are vast sheet-like expanses of water in the deep sea which barely contain any breathable oxygen. Some of these zones can contain as little as 5% of the oxygen that saturates air, and barely anything survives here.
And guess what? The vampire squid lives here. Not only lives, but thrives.
This is the game the vampire squid plays, every day of its life. On hard difficulty.
Obviously, living in a dead wasteland of suffocating water has required the squid to adopt some nifty tools of survival. Do not do so would be like entering the final dungeon of a video game with early game gear.
First off is a pair of sensory filaments, which the vampire squid extends through the water much like a spider does its web. They are super long and flexible, and probably the source of so many dick jokes that the squid will choke a bitch if anyone tells one more.
“No, I’ve never heard that one ever. Ha ha ha. Real fuckin’ original.”
Next up is a pair of membranous wings, used by the squid to travel through the aether of space to “fly” through the water, it’s cape-like arm web billowing behind it. The vampire parallels are getting more and more accurate.
Interestingly this wing isn’t the same in adults and juveniles. At one point in their devlopment they start growing a second pair of fins which eventually fully substitutes the first pair, which then atrophies back into the flesh. Thus if you’re lucky enough to catch a vampire squid, it’s not impossible that it will have four fins. The biologists who first found these four-finned squid nearly went insane trying to describe it (and several other developmental stages) as separate species. It was such a mess it took years to sort out, and nowadays the vampire squid is the sole surviving species of its order. He’s standing in the darkness. Alone.
WAKE ME UP INSIDE
The fins and the filaments aren’t just decorative elements the squid picked out at Hot Topic, either. Used in tandem, they’re a fearsomely effective netting tool and the way this crafty cephalopod earns its daily bread. You think spiders are cool with their webs? Nah, Spiders ain’t shit. They’re lazy idiots and their web does all the work for them. the vampire squid’s filaments is where it’s REALLY at.
See, the vampire squid’s main diet is thankfully not blood but something called “marine snow”. This is basically the shower of discarded tissue, shit and corpses that rains down upon the lower layers of the deep ocean from the upper layers all year round. Having this fall from the sky for “White Christmas” would probably be quite traumatizing.
DECK THE HALLS WITH BALLS OF FECES SHALALALALALALALALAAAAARGH
The vampire squid, however, has had its resolve steeled by years of isolation in the darkness of the deep ocean, and is willing to chug down anything to survive. Bear Grylls is a picky gourmet chef compared to this guy.
That said, it needs to eat something that’s actually of some nutritional worth. It could spend its life scarfing down every chunk of marine snow it comes across, but that would be a waste of muscle movements since most of it does exactly nil to fill up its stomach. That’s where the filaments/fins combo come in, turning the vampire squid into an angry little tripwire trap ready to snap at any moment.
Note the filament. That’s not a parasite, that’s legit a part of the animal. Nobody knows where it evolved from, it’s not a modified arm or tentacle and it’s a fucking enigma.
Mystery tentacles: the quintessential Terrible Tentacle Theatre experience.
Extending its filaments (one at a time) into the mucky waters around, it waits more still then I do when I go to the kitchen for a glass of water during the night and I hear a sudden noise. The filaments come with a plethora of sensitive nerve endings, ensuring that anything bigger than a flea’s asscheeks landing on them will elicit an immediate response from the squid. And if said asscheeks touch the filaments, responds the squid it does. Specifically, it exhibits a surprising burst of speed (considering it just drifts around all day and it is effectively the consistency of Jell-O), pulled entirely by its fins to perform an acrobatic fucking pirouette off the handle, whipping around in a loose loop and catching its own filament. Millions of dogs around the world enviously sigh in unison.
After this, the squid pulls off its prey from the filament using its arms, which generate a solid slime-like material. The collected chunks of edible whatnot are rolled into a ball of slime, and horfed down by the squid at once. You probably cannot tell but there’s a Michelin star underneath its mantle. “Slimeball à la Vampire Squid” is one gourmet-ass dish.
Molto bene!
Of course, all this fine dining makes the vampire squid itself tasty as all hell. You are what you eat, afterall. But in the deep sea, you do NOT want to be tasty, because everyone is hungry on top of being the most light-deficient gourmet motherfuckers on the planet. So naturally, our subject needs some sort of way to evade the raving food critics hunting him in the deep. And he has this way in the form of a very unlikely tool: bioluminescence.
“But Admin”, I hear you say, “didn’t you just get done telling us last week that glowing in the deep sea will attract everything around you?” That I did, young padawan, and it still stands. However, just like last week’s subject, the vampire squid uses its built-in glowsticks with a very express purpose and doesn’t just flash into the sunset willy-nilly. The glowy parts of this beast have very well-defined places and usages, exquisitely located and timed, just like a laugh track in a sitcom. Underneath its dark-red skin the vampire squid carries clusters of glowing photophores mainly on the tip of its arms as well as in two fake eye-spots on the top of its mantle, ready to flare up in a blue burst of light on demand. The fake eyes even come with their own built-in eyelids, opening and closing as Dracula Jr. sees fit.
Imagine you’re a predator and you see this glowing collection of random bullshit. Now figure out where to bite. Good fucking luck.
These lights are used with great care and consideration in order to troll the fuck out of anybody who is foolish enough to make an attempt on the vampire squid’s life. Upon attack, the squid whips its arms around with the lights on full luminosity, creating a confusing dance of light spots in the otherwise total darkness and messing up the predator’s perception. The false eyes only make things worse, finally creating the illusion that the vampire squid possesses unlimited godlike control over space and time, which may damn well be true.
Question: What way is this vampire squid going? Hint: It’s not facing toward you.
The appearance of the squid as a godlike psychic is surprisingly in line with the whole vampire angle, since Dracula has reknownedly had the ability to charm and hypnotize people. The effect is further accentuated by the squid’s eyes, proportionally the largest of any animal ever discovered. With a diameter a whopping one sixth of the animal’s whole body, this thing's oculars are like if you were walking around with eyes the size of your head. Each.
And for added effect, they glow and change color depending on which angle you’re looking at them from.
DISCO CTHULHU
And finally, if a spooky vampire-looking-ass dark red glowing octopus-squid-thing with hypnotic powers isn’t Halloweeny enough for you, the vampire squid has a final trick up its sleeve that catapults it right into the realm of body horror. This is suspected to be a defensive tactic but who the fuck knows, really. Deep sea creatures are enigmatic as shit, and they guard their secrets jealously.
Alright, I’ll quit beating around the bush and say it outright. Basically the final defensive measure of the vampire squid is turning itself inside out.
Yep.
Of all the stupid shit that Mother Nature could have come up with, she went and decided “alright, it just up and turns itself inside the fuck out. What are you gonna do about it?”
This behavior is known to science as “pineappling” or even more Halloweeny-ly “pumpkin posture” (no, seriously) and it involves the squid taking the webbing between its arms and turning it upside to shield its head and body from harm. Now folded comfortably into a spiky little footbal, the vampire squid knows itself free from harm. The webbings are thin enough for it to see through, but also don’t let its lights to shine around, so doing this effectively means the vampire squid switches into stealth mode. Plus it looks stylishly similar to Dracula popping the collar on his cape.
The vampire squid is every Monster Mash horror cliché come to life and smushed into a vaguely cephalopod shaped package for best user experience. When the stars are right and Cthulhu and his Star-Spawn emerge from the sunken city of R’lyeh to bring the world to ruin once more, these guys will be the first living things they encounter. And then they’ll fuck off back to their stupid city, mumbling things like “what the hell man, that’s plagiarism” and “that’s way too extra, even for us”. The apocalypse is postponed once again, thanks to the vampire squid’s vailant efforts of looking weird as fuck.
Happy Halloween, everybody! I was a day late due to the length of this article, but I hope you don’t mind. Until next Tuesday’s article, have a wonderful time with the aftermath of the day of cheesy horror and confectioneries.

One With Water
who?: Wanna One’s Lee Daehwi genre: 🌸 type: bullet point TW: drowning
blog navigator.
mermaid! AU
the type of merman Daehwi would be
dnsjskdsn
my knowledge of mermaids is until Barbie movies so I’m sorry if this is awful. I did my research though! Thank you for requesting this, anon 💓
- Admin L
Lee Daehwi, the youngest in his family and the second youngest among the mermaids he lives with
they stay in an underwater city called King’s Cliff
because it’s near the rocky side of the beach
it’s a very pretty city, filled with multi-coloured corals and all sorts of ocean life
just imagine your city but underwater
kept safe with a magical wall that protects the mermaids and erases all trace of them
so that common folk will never know about them
interesting right?
only gifted mermaids are allowed to keep the shells and link up with other gifted mermaids to maintain the safety
for example: if you have the blue shell, you must find the mermaid with the yellow shell and then find the mermaid with the green shell etc
then, the 11 will gather in the Royal Hall once a month with their shells, set them in a bowl, spin them, connect them with the other shells and that maintains the protective wall
pst, Daehwi owns the purple shell
anyway
Daehwi LOVES his fellow ocean-dwelling creatures
he plays hide and seek with them frequently
he is a bit hard to find since he is one of the smaller and swifter mermen, and his purple tail blends in very well with his surroundings
Daehwi is that merman that is constantly surrounded by wildlife
a school of fish follow him around a lo
Jinyoung swears he’s cheating on him with a baby sea lion
even sharks and stingrays are attracted to him
just lives off happiness and joy and treasures everything
a vegan mermaid
but almost all the mermaids stick to a strictly plant-based diet
Daehwi prefers to keep in his safety zone, his house in King’s Cliff, in the coral walls of the city
he isn’t like his mermen brothers Daniel, Woojin and Sungwoon, who love to adventure out of the capital and bring back new finds every time
be it a treasure chest
a new species of crab
pieces of wood from a shipwreck dating from hundreds of years ago
he isn’t really about that life but he will join in once in a while
o
I forgot to mention that only upper-class to royal blooded mermaids live in King’s Cliff
Lee Daehwi is heir to billions, he’s borderline royalty
he’s also a Shell Keeper of King’s Cliff, this boy is something
of course, he isn’t Prince Jisung of Pearl View City but he’s close
his parents own a chain of reputable department stores
a HUGE influence
but Daehwi isn’t really interested in business, he doesn’t even plan to major in it
no worries, he knows his brothers will take over the business
he wants to be a marine biologist
another thing Daehwi wants to do...
he wants to visit the human world
you know how mermaids are often written about in children’s books and fairytales? in their universe, it’s the same for humans
he knows some mermaids from other cities that have the ability to transform into humans and a couple of days
‘it’s very interesting up there, a gorgeous city. Of course, the sun is much stronger,’ Jaehwan tells him
but Jaehwan doesn’t use his abilities very much
since he matured, he also gained responsibilities
such as caring for the grey shell and learning from his parents how to spin it properly
one day, Daehwi has to abandon all of his hobbies and focus on that
:”)
since Daehwi likes the thought of the human world, he goes to the surface a lot
to observe
to protect himself, he always hides behind this huge rock formation
it’s interesting and amazing to see a world so close to the sky and so close to the sea at once
he loves observing the area
in particular, he adores watching surfing competitions
every year, there’s a huge national tournament held in that side of the sea
every year, he props himself up behind the rock early in the morning till late at night to watch
you are the best surfer in that zone
not to brag but you did conquer Nationals for three years in a row
no offence but your academy and coach have sent you overseas to compete
each time, you only bring back Golds or the occasional Silver
everyone knows who you are and you pretty much rule that beach
you started to surf because your parents owned a surfboard store along the beach and a couple more inland
most of your life was spent on sand, playing with waves and fantasising about mermaids
then, your dad gifted a surfboard to you for your 7th birthday and that’s where everything happened
now, a decade or so later, you’re easily one of the best surfers in the east zone
there’s no way you’re going to miss Nationals this year, especially when it’s held in your front yard
other than surfing, you love hanging out in your swimsuit all day
so that any time that you felt like it, you could go explore the beach, cliffs or take a dip in the water
by now, you’ve explored most of the beach, you know of all the nooks and crannies
except for maybe...the crown shaped cliff
it’s not that you don’t want to adventure there, your parents ward you off a lot
it’s dangerous, one missed step and you fall into a bed of rocks to certain death
so you just admire it from afar
the crown cliff really allures you
mainly because legend has it that a mermaid was spotted there for a brief second
you loved to listen to tales like those, like it I could ride on waves in a foam board then why can’t mermaids exist?
the older folk always described the incident vividly, a young boy, purple hair and tail, gleaming brown eyes that bore into their own before he vanished in a second
no one really believes it
but you still kind of do
every day when you’re practising, you feel like you’re being watched
but not in a creepy, paedophile way
no
in a sense, there seems to be someone looking out for you, other than your friends on shore
but you never found out who, or what
Daehwi always makes sure to get a five-minute head start
if you chase after him, he would disappear behind the curtain of King’s Cliff and all memory of him would be erased
he was never worried
he did fret about you when you did a particularly painful trick and plopped into the ocean
Daehwi watches surfers practice all the time, every day, at any hour
but he can’t help but feel some attachment to you
other than the fact your performances are always the most enthralling and enjoyable
he longs to do tricks like that too
and you’re the best at them
anyway, it’s the first of three days of Nationals
adrenaline pumped, excitement overflowing
everyone wants the crown
but you know whose head it’s going to be put on
yours
nerves eat at your side but you try to push them away and focus on the competition itself
• this year, there are a lot of killer rookies, all competing for your crown
you know they aren’t nothing
but neither are you
sunglasses?
check
sunscreen?
check
a bottle of something his mother made for him so that he wouldn’t dehydrate?
check
Daehwi out here sipping his tea, sunglasses on, watching the surfers prepare to battle
he has his eye on you since the start
he knows that this year would probably be one of the last Nationals he would be able to watch
sadly
it’s bittersweet
he has to fulfil his duties of a Shell Keeper
but he wants time to entertain this too
THAT mermaid who is kind of obsessed with humans and human sea sports
Daehwi knows that he should treasure his limited time on the surface
he’s really doing a lot not to get caught
finally, the heat starts
one by one, other regional winners line up for their turn
Daehwi watches and gaps in amazement when you start off with a sharp bang
heading straight for that small wave and executing a perfect roundhouse cutback
loud cheers resound throughout the beach and he feels the urge to cheer you on
he’s certain you finished both heats with a perfect 20
you just have one more left
‘ohh, this will be interesting. the waves have gotten a lot more stirred up and there could be a chance for___ to finally perfect the tube ride!’ the spectator announces, hyping up the crowd
you’ve done it too many times to count
but never succeed in a heat
the first attempt was four years ago, and that was a total flop, causing you to settle for Bronze
embarrassing
you’re still #1 in Daehwi’s eyes
like c’mon, he’s so whipped
you just started swimming towards the wave and Daehwi is already impressed
you know how his mouth falls open a little and his brows furrow and he just jams
yes
‘OOHHH LOOKS LIKE THERE REALLY WILL BE A CHANCE THAT WE’LL WITNESS A TUBE RIDE’
pressure
you bit your bottom lip, analysing the wave and the chances you’ll make it through the tube ride
alive
‘it’s been years,___is practically a legend in this industry, a very well-established surfer, but, never once have we seen a complete tube ride from them’
pressure
you need to make a decision
Daehwi is on the edge of his seat - rock - nerves are biting at him
he pushes himself off his comfortable spot and closer to the waves
‘LOOKS LIKE THEY’RE REALLY GOING FOR IT!’
it’s a steady start, balancing well, you make your way towards the daunting wave that’s about to swallow you up, literally
it curves around you, forming a cover, causing a little claustrophobia
suck it up
breathe oh my goodness you got this
no
but it’s already happening, the opening at the end is shrinking, if you’re not quick enough, this wave will wash over you and eat you up
you will for your board to speed up
‘DO YOU THINK ___WILL MAKE IT OUT OF THIS TUBE?’
your heart says yes
but the oceans say no
the wave rains on you, you’re eaten alive
water fills your lungs, throat burning. the pressure is immense, everything is crushing you alive
you thrash about, mind blank, trying to yell for help
it may not look like much from shore
but you feel yourself sink into the very depths of the ocean floor
the beating of your heart slows, maybe stops
you don’t know
at least you’re having a brilliant dream
a dashing merman with purple hair and a striking lilac tail rescued you, he has refined features, his eyelids folding unevenly but you smile because it’s cute
‘stay with me! don’t close your eyes! I know, I know it hurts!’
he’s desperately performing CPR on you
intellectual
‘come on! I can’t let you die!’
the rock cuts into your back but you don’t feel anything as you’re too busy coughing out water
the merman uses his powers to heal your cut wounds, luckily, they seal up like nothing ever happened
he smiles at you
then you don’t recall anymore, maybe you fainted or something
it’s a good dream to have, perhaps it’s your last one
but, you wake up in a hospital bed, oxygen mask, IV drip and all
when your family arrives, they explain that everyone thought you were dead for a good 6 hours
your board was wrecked, Nationals was paused, the worst was expected
then, a search party found you washed up on the beach near the crown shaped cliff
there was just no explanation for it
‘wait? did you say cliff? like the rockier beach area?’ you ask, eyes widening in disbelief
‘as in, the place right by your house, yes.’ a nurse answers - you aren’t paying attention
no
was it really a dream?
you return to the water as soon as you’re out of the hospital despite doctors and family warnings
Nationals are long forgotten
but you need to know the truth
after getting a tip-off from Jaehwan, Daehwi doesn’t dare to venture near the surface anymore
he can see you from where he is anyway
you’re standing by, waiting, wasting your time
all because you thought you dreamed it
he misses the surface, he misses observing, he misses you :(
‘ah, what the hell,’ you groan, skipping stones to pass the time. ‘I should never have believed it. It’s just a dumb dream.’
right then, you spot a tuft of fluffy purple hair peek out from behind a nearby Boulder
that catches your attention immediately
‘hello? are you okay? do you need any help?’ you yell, the beating of your heart quickening
there is no reply, just a swish of something and a dive back into the water
‘wait!’
you wade into the waves, peering beyond the horizon to get a glimpse of whoever that was
‘I can help you!’ but your voice just echoes around you, back to you, empty
you’re curious
but didn’t curiosity kill the cat?
luckily, Daehwi is practically a harmless merman
there is a reason why he stays mainly behind the barriers of King’s Cliff
he isn’t really into combat and using his powers to harm
Daehwi swims as fast as he can back to his city, pass the wall and back to his universe
he can finally breathe again
not that he couldn’t on the surface but he was holding his breath out of anxiety
he knows he can’t return for another good week or so
now, you’re wise enough
you hide behind rocks or trees or even under a nearby beach umbrella
so it isn’t immediately obvious what you’re up to
some people have already begun whispering, some say you’ve lost your mind, waiting for something that doesn’t even exist
you try to stray away from waiting but that gut feeling always hauls you back
you can’t explain it
I mean, yeah, maybe you hit your head too hard and all but...
one day
it’s bright and sunny, but the beach is close to deserted
maybe you’re the only person crazy enough to withstand the high heat
Daehwi knows that there won’t be anyone today
why? he strategically plans to surface in a hotter period so that no one will see him
even though he can’t observe anyone, he can enjoy time to himself
admire his tail, ponder whether he should polish his scales again
wondering whether he should buy a tail cover
does he really need those new kelp biscuits? He heard from Jisung it’s for detox
‘hello?’
at the sound of your voice, Daehwi dives back into the water on instinct but he doesn’t run away
you can’t believe what you’re seeing
a mermaid
a really good-looking one at that
‘you’re...real? this isn’t some sort of sick joke is it?’
how awkward is this? extremely
‘uh.’ Daehwi can’t say anything, he’s usually never tongue-tied. nervously, he swishes his tail to get further away from you
‘wait!’ you yell, reaching out a hand. ‘don’t go! please! I saw you in my dream...y-you, you saved my life.’
he did
Daehwi blushes and shyly looks away
‘yes, I did.’ He whispers softly
‘w-what’s your name?’
‘Daehwi.’
‘w-where...I-I, what h-happened?’ you stutter out, feeling your mind fall into a frenzy once again
the merman hums in response, he scans the area and picks up a small conch shell
‘you should take time to process what happened. when you’re ready, call me with this, I’ll come running.’
then, he plants a kiss on the shell and whispers something
how to be a conch shell
it glows for a second before turning purple
your eyes go cartoonish big and you’re beginning to wonder if this is another weird dream of yours
but it can’t be, because he slips the shell into the pocket of your shorts with a smile and you feel the weight of it
‘I....’
Daehwi catches you in his grasp before your body hits the water
your eyes are shut tight but you’re breathing
sighing - partially in amusement, he swims as near to shore as he possibly can before gently laying you on the soft sand
remember how I said it’s a hot day? Daehwi stays by your side, gently wetting your face in hopes of you waking up
and also to make sure you don’t die of dehydration or anything like that
eventually, he ducks for cover when your family realises what happened to you
he returns to King’s Cliff with his heart fluttering and a dreamy smile on his lips
he’s even particularly happy about attending shell spinning class that day
you wake up
believing everything that occurred was all a dream
but it can’t possibly be
for your new surfboard is leaning against your room wall, a fragment of the old one on your desk
and that small purple conch shell sits right by your bedside table, almost like a house phone in a hotel room
