Monstre sur la plage (Monster on the Beach), photograph by DORA MAAR, 1936. from Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
Note on material: Gelatin silver print
Note on context, written by Dominic Witek for Artsper Magazine:
Dora Maar was a true comrade of the surrealist movement, and worked with figures such as Georges Bataille and Andre Breton. She also worked closely with the AEAR, The Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists. It was during this period that Maar created her astonishing and captivating work, Monstre sur la plage (Monster on the beach). This piece formed a part of the series of photomontages she created at the time, which explored anxieties surrounding the crumbling political climate and threat of war. Maar’s works depict noticeably oppressed and disturbed figures in ironically idyllic settings, alluding to the falsities fed to the public by politicians during the war years.

My Bed- Tracey Emin, 1998
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Emin's work was inspired by the state she had left her bed after a particularly terrible four days in her life. Emin spent four days in bed binge-drinking, smoking, and taking numerous drugs after a nasty breakup with her partner. 'My Bed' defied society's assumptions of women by revealing the truth of the feminine experience at the millennium's turn. While causing quite a stir, this conceptual art piece left a lasting impression. When Tracey Emin displayed her bed in the 1999 Turner Prize exhibition at Tate Britain, she established a new standard for confessional art. She had the idea for "My Bed" after a long night in bed. When Emin finally got out of bed, she was overcome with the strong notion that what she had made was, in a sense, a work of art. She examined the disarray that she had made. She decided the world needed to see her bed, which was surrounded by crumpled tissues, period-stained clothes, smokes, empty vodka bottles, a pregnancy test, lube, and condoms.
It is crucial to note that much of the conversation surrounding the work of art at the time was centred on critics' dissatisfaction. Some people compared this type of assemblage art to a crime scene. However, "My Bed" garnered greater emotional reactions from viewers. Some people appeared to identify with the artwork's powerful depiction of vulnerability. When mental health was still a taboo subject twenty years ago, an unwavering remark from someone who wasn't in the best mental state but wanted to be honest about it seemed to warm the hearts of many thus demonstrating the significance of the form. By fully replicating the state her bed was in after a state of depression it allowed other people to recognise it and talk about it. If it was a photograph it wouldn't have given such a striking message as being able to physically see her poor mental health fully reflected in the disarray of her bed.

DEMONSTRATIVE EXERCISE
'Nighthawks' by Edward Hooper, 1942
Tumblr media
DESCRIPTION-
A scene happening at night in a diner in an empty, urban street. The artist uses a lot of cool tones- blues, reds. The scene depicts a bar with three people inside as customers- two of which are men in dark blue suits, and one of which is a woman in a red dress. The other person is the bartender of the bar and is wearing a white uniform. The leading lines of the shop and street are straight. The lighting is artificial and it is night time.
ANALYSIS-
The scene happening inside appears brighter than the dull empty street outside- creating contrast between the two. The composition and the perspective lead your eyes to the right- specifically to the man sitting on the stool. The colours oft he composition appear in harmony visually and the palette is quite restricted to cool blues, reds and greens. The outdoor is relatively dark. There is also sharp use of lines which represent the structured sharp angles.
INTERPRETATION-
Superficial theme: diner at night, artificial inner lighting, empty urban area.
Isolation theme: melancholy feelings. The mood created in this work is an eerie and mysterious one. This is influenced by the use of colours and light, as well as the fact that the rest of the shops in the street appear to be closed. The harsh interior light contrasts sharply with the surrounding darkness. A lonely and somber feeling is evoked as the man is sitting to the side, alone. This further highlights this figure - leading the viewers to focus on him.
Symbolism in composition: the composition itself may hold meaning. The counter of the bar acts a physical barrier that separates the figures. The large glass window creates a boundary between the diner and the night outside. This might also symbolize the people’s loneliness. Hopper places us outside the diner looking in- and leaves the story open-ended. The lack of clear narrative invites multiple interpretations- prompting viewers to project their own stories onto the scene- which might also represent the anonymity of urban life.
JUDGEMENT-
Personal resonance and viewer connection: I feel that the scenery depicted elicits a memorable and evocative mood along with its ambiguous narrative. Perhaps this may be relatable in its portrayal of modern life.
Cultural and social relevance: This work has become emblematic of a certain experience of urban American life. This is quite quirky as a scene in New York as usually, nightlife in New York is busy and chaotic - so this further highlights a loneliness theme (Witek, 2019). The use of colour is effective as it adds to the emotions experienced. The artist puts the figures in the scene on display as the onlooker peers into the shop’s window. This successfully adds to the feeling of eeriness and emphasizes the feelings of the loneliness of the man in the scene, which seem to be that of hopelessness.

kahit nakakulong man ako
sa galaw ng katotohanan
dito sa mundo ng kasalukuyan
damdamin ko'y kumakaripas
sa ilang lipad ng minsan
ang mapadaan ka sa aking mata
may namumuong paghanga
bunga sa kakaibang mangha
pumipitas lamang sa ilang tadhana
na ika'y madama bilang sinta
kahit sa balat ng panaginip lamang
mumunting pag-ibig ang aking nahabi
sa ipinagbabawal na pagkakataon

Hannah Hoch, photocollages
Over the Water, 1943,
Little sun, 1965
Artsper

Nigeria
Emmanuel Ojebola, a gifted artist from southwest Nigeria, was born in Eruwa, Oyo State. His artistic journey blossomed at Baptist Model High School Sango, Eruwa, where a creative art teacher nurtured his passion during his junior secondary school days. Seeking knowledge, he further honed his skills at The Ibarapa Polytechnic Eruwa, specializing in mixed media, particularly coffee, acrylic, and oil, with a focus on capturing human emotions and life's complexities.
Beyond traditional mediums, Emmanuel explores photography, skillfully unveiling the genuine essence and emotions of his subjects. His art seamlessly blends realism with abstract elements, reflecting his life experiences. Inspired by the resilience of women, drawn from his personal journey with his mother through challenging times, he is now a dedicated full-time studio artist. Emmanuel passionately believes in art's power to instigate positive change and sees it as a universal language that transcends borders. Every stroke and photograph, in his eyes, serves as a testament to the potential of art to shape a brighter future for humanity.
Drawing inspiration from figures like Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele, as well as contemporary colleagues, Emmanuel's portfolio includes notable exhibitions such as "Emergence" at Alexis Gallery Lagos in 2021 and "OUR MANY COLOURS" at Art Pantheon Gallery in 2022. His works have gained recognition beyond Nigeria, reaching audiences on platforms like Artsper.

Exhibition
According to the women I spoke to, the main theme of the gallery was digital art, even though the faculty was not enforced to follow a general theme.
At first glance, it is very difficult to understand the theme and even more so to follow some general directions within the gallery. The show is well presented in the sense of space given to each art piece. Actually, in some areas, they could have benefited from better lighting, especially the smaller exhibit of Nobuho NAGASAWA. The show requires the use of the pamphlet that is given at the desk, and with the information provided, we can truly appreciate the art pieces better and understand why this is considered a digital art show.

3. The artwork that stood out was created by Andreas Rensch: "Pandemonium." It is captivating to imagine how the artist captured the essence of the individuals through the photos in order to then place them on the drawing. Overall, even the colors that are implemented serve to capture one's attention.

SUBJECT MATTER
‘Mona Lisa’ by Leonardo da Vinci, 1503-1506.
Tumblr media
SUBJECT MATTER-
This portrait painting is a High Renaissance oil-on-panel painting that depicts a woman believed to be the wife of a Florentine merchant (Zucker and Harris, 2017). It is a half-length portrait of this woman in a seated position. Her arms are crossed and hands are folded- traditionally symbolising marital fidelity. Her attire is dark, thin and opaque. The dress she is wearing is quite traditional, not elaborate and is characterised with its wide neckline. Her hair is loose with curls that fall over her neck. Her head is also covered by a transparent veil.
All of this is complemented with the woman's mysterious gaze. Her smile appears elusive yet captivating - as if she is aware of her audience. This is achieved through Da Vinci’s sfumato technique - which furthermore gives that mysterious and hazy atmosphere in this painting. Behind the Mona Lisa one cannot miss the idealized, distant landscape that is also made with sfumato. The setting appears as a valley with rivers and cliffs that fade into icy mountains. This mountainous landscape is characterised with paths, and also a bridge over a river in the right half of the painting (Mirkovitch, 2019).
