A beautiful photograph by a dear friend Sasa Gyoker from her numerous award winning works.
"Season of Silence"
Sasa tells: "In this series I have gathered works I took in winter. I live in Canada, and this season here can be a fertile terrain for meditative albeit fiercely cold walks. I find winter accentuates the graphic qualities of nature, while offering an invitation into a contemplative state enriched by silence."
"Sasa was born and lived in Budapest, Hungary, before moving to Canada. After completing her M.A. degree in Art History and working as a Curatorial Assistant at the National Gallery of Canada, she returned to study—this time graphic design, which has been her vocation ever since. In tandem with graphic design, her interest in and passion for photography has been growing stronger through the years. Her album, Of Trees and Birds and Snow and Silence, was published in 2015. Since then, she has won several international photography awards, and has participated in both solo and juried group exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Europe, and South Korea. Her works have been published and used for cover pages in books, albums, blogs, posters, literary journals and photo magazines, including her photograph in David Gibson: 100 Great Street Photographs (Munich, London, New York: Prestel, 2017), D. Tyler Bennett: The Coffee House Anthology—A Meeting Place for the Arts (Charnwood Arts, UK, 2016) as well as in LensCulture and Lomography Magazine, among others. Her photographs have also been shown in exhibitions worldwide, such as in the international juried exhibition at the Kiscelli Museum in Budapest, Hungary, a venue of the 2019 Budapest Photo Festival, and the exhibition of over 30 of her works at the ArtReach Gallery in Portland, Oregon, in 2021."

The Jazz Lounge
August 2022
This storefront mural project is located on El Cajon Blvd in the College Area Business District. I designed and led this mural as part of the ArtReach Mural Artist Apprenticeship Program.
This design is inspired by the excitement, abstract improvisation, and fluidity of the jazz genre. I also stuck to mid-century inspiration and a minimal color palette to focus the eye on all of the subtle details. The flowing and warped checkerboards incorporate music notes, and the heart lines evoke the rhythm and style of a musical experience. Lastly, the music notes placed above the door signify the entrance to a place where creativity and music will truly be the focus.
In partnership with the College Area Business District, I’m thrilled to have a hand in beautifying the neighborhoods where I grew up. After assisting on 15+ projects for ArtReach, this was my first time designing and leading a project entirely on my own!

"I had the chance to meet the kids after the session with Saba Hasan. What stood out most was a sense of pride the children felt at creating something. I feel academics and scholastic learning squeezes the fun out of a sense of true achievement because in a way the lesson has been thrashed a hundred times before a result is issued. Art is fresh, it is immediate and instant and I saw its impact on the children. They had a very 'live and fresh' sense of creating something. Secondly, the art itself was so beautiful that I could sense the effect this beauty had on them. The peeling walls and dilapidated look was completely and utterly transformed in the few, simple images they painted. I feel as human beings we are programmed to react to beauty, to absorb it and draw from it. It might be hyperbolic to say it gives them hope, but not really - maybe the level of hope doesn't shoot from 0 to 100 immediately, but being surrounded by beauty helps in feeling less despondent. "

QOTD: How many languages do you know? I’m fluent in 2, proficient in another, and know a bit of 3 others...I like languages what can I say? It’s nothing compared to some of my friends. • Anyways, Here’s the first finished empress in the trio! I tried to make it so each had their own unique colour scheme, the hair for this one was quite a lot of work...each strand is individually inked. Not quite as much work as say my Dagoth Ur painting, but still, it was a lot of hair. I hope you like it! Prepare for the other two in the next couple of days :) • Yesterday was my high school graduation so I took the day off from social media to celebrate and relax, I’m happy to be done. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - A local group is trying to add some beauty and color to San Diego County.
The Artreach Mural Program is designed to allow kids to explore their creativity while establishing a connection to their community, something that's done even before murals are painted.
Oscar Gallegos, a student at John J. Montgomery Elementary, said this is the feeling he gets every time he sees the brand new welcome mural at his school.
"It feels great to think, hey, my friend helped make that. I helped bring this to life," Gallegos said.
He, along with his classmates, participated in the unveiling Tuesday morning. It was designed by the entire 6th-grade class. Their idea was to highlight the school's eagle mascot, palm trees that are seen all around San Diego, to an art brush that represents the arts on campus.
Isabel Halpern, the mural program manager, says, "They don't just start by painting - they start by drawing out our ideas having group collaborative brainstorms for what they can see for the walls on their school or community center."
All of this is done through the organization Artreach Mural Program, which works directly with youth in our community through their schools or community centers, giving them a platform and tools to create murals.

Wow, I’m not sure where the time went this spring, but I can say I was pretty busy with new classes. Summer will be no different, it turns out, as I have more than a handful of new classes to prepare for. And it all kicks off Sunday, June 11th.
Internet Video Basics
This was a new class this spring that was so successful we’re repeating it for the summer. This adult class is for beginners who want to learn how to make a video or video series for any variety of reasons: crowdfunding campaigns, explainers for new products or ideas, weekly business or personal vlogs, even resumes or bios in video form. We’ll cover a wide array of topics, including camera work and animation options, small business marketing concepts, how video and social media work together and even how to curate content for your online community. As this is still a new class, I’m remaining open and flexible to feedback from students about what you’re really interested in learning and crafting the curriculum around that consensus.
TeenPop: Handmade Journals
This is like the cherry on top of my summer sundae! Seriously, handmade books have been an absolute obsession of mine for the past year, and I’ve been using my own handmade journals every day for the past few months. I’m currently on my third style and have lots of great tips to share with teens, many of whom are avid journalers. There is simply nothing like a handmade book! I have a theory that that’s because we spend so much time interacting with flat surfaces (screens) just like the ones we’re using to communicate right now! I know I have a longing for textured surfaces that I’m pretty sure a lot of other people share. Carrying around a handmade book is just my way of bringing the dimensional aspects of my inner thoughts/inner world into my daily life.
Digital Arts Summer Camp (11-14)
This weeklong camp will provide a sampling of activities from a variety of digital arts, and I’m really looking forward teaching it because we’re going to be visiting some of my favorite subjects, including filmmaking and animation. The plan is to start out with some digital drawing, painting, and/or mixed media topics and then breach photography mid-week. From there it will be an easy shift into digital storytelling, which is not only my home turf but also something the kids really want and need.
Stop Motion Animation (6-10)
Stop motion animation is incredibly popular right now and still gaining new fans every day. It’s also one of my favorite subjects to teach at the Art Center because it invites collaboration with so many different art forms. This age group is particularly good at stop motion, in my experience. They seem to be less inhibited and more imaginative than older students by and large, and this medium really meets them where they are – using 3D objects they interact with every day. The technology has also gotten to the point where 6-10s have no trouble accessing the tools they need to do engaging, story-driven animations. For evidence of this, check out my Vimeo page.
ArtReach
Spring was my first semester teaching with the Art Center’s outreach program, and it was an incredible experience. I taught a group of high school students, and we explored everything from graphic design to paper distressing techniques. I had a lot of fun sharing my passion for both digital and nondigital forms of art with these students, and they learned a little bit about photography, character design, and special subjects like mandalas from around the world, which we experienced from a digital perspective. This summer I’m teaching at two sites and doing a short workshop series at Girls, Inc. For a preview of what I’ve got planned, check out these women’s art:

Just 2 Weeks Until Summer Classes Wow, I'm not sure where the time went this spring, but I can say I was pretty busy with new classes.

World Vision, partners and ambassadors continue to provide emergency aid for Typhoon Odette survivors
Three months have passed since the Philippines was hit by torrential rains, violent winds, floods and storm surges due to Typhoon Odette (international name Rai). Overnight, the Typhoon displaced thousands of families, resulting in billions worth of damages as the country is still recovering from the effects of the pandemic. Since then, World Vision ambassadors continue to show their support for typhoon-affected communities through heartfelt activities to help raise funds for World Vision’s relief efforts.
Ogie Alcasid held a fundraising concert entitled Online Caroling for a Cause; Quest held the Bagong Yugto fundraising concert through Facebook Live in partnership with When In Manila; Christine and Julius Babao organized ArtReach 2021, a fundraising auction held by their Art PH advocacy in partnership with Art Rocks; and other World Vision ambassadors such as Jasmine Curtis-Smith, Joyce Pring, Juancho Trivino, and Marc Nelson provided donations to the relief efforts.

With support from ambassadors and corporate partners, World Vision was able to assist nearly 11,000 families from typhoon-affected areas such as Bohol, Cebu, Negros Occidental and Surigao del Norte from December 2021 to February 2022. As of March 2022, the organization is shifting to the early recovery phase of its Typhoon Odette Response Plan. With 1,400 families and counting assisted in Dinagat Island, World Vision is expanding its efforts to assist communities from Southern Leyte and Siargao with support from ADH, HK SAR, and UNFPA.

“I love supporting World Vision because the moment the typhoon hit, the moment it caused the catastrophe, World Vision went there right away. Now is the best time to be selfless. It takes only a little amount to support the future through World Vision,” shared World Vision Ambassador Quest during his online fundraising concert.
