After Testing, Gold
In Christian art, the square halo identified a living person presumed to be a saint. If you are "in the crucible" of life circumstances, you just might be on your way. Job said of God: "When he has tried me, I shall come forth as gold." Quite a promise.
Tumblr media
I found a copyright-free photo and traced the outline onto white fabric. With a layer of batting underneath, I "sketched" the image with black thread using free-motion stitching. Surrounded by the jagged lines of "stress" and the golden square halo, my subject submits to the trials with hope.

Congratulations, Lt. Col. Rosenstock!
This June I attended Lt. Col. Doug Rosenstock’s retirement ceremony. Doug is married to my lovely & talented younger cousin Erin, and I have had the pleasure of knowing him since he was a mid-shipman at the US Naval Academy. During the early years of their relationship, Erin would bring Doug out to our home in the country to visit with our young family. These are precious memories for us all…

Dindga McCannon, born in 1947, is an African-American artist, fiber artist, muralist, teacher author and illustrator.
McCannon was born and raised in Harlem and was inspired to become an artist at the age of 10. She is self-taught and works intuitively. Calling herself a mixed-media, a multimedia artist she works at "fusing my fine art 'training' with the traditional women's needlework taught to me by my mother, Lottie K. Porter, and grandmother Hattie Kilgo — sewing, beading, embroidery, and quilting into what is now known as ArtQuilts."
In response to sexism and racism in the art world, artists in the 1960s and 1970s created collectives as a way to fight oppression. In the 1960s McCannon was a member of Weusi Artist Collective. This is how McCannon became interested in the Black Arts Movement. The Weusi Collective was interested in creating art that evoked African themes and symbols, as well as highlighting contemporary black pride. In 1971, she hosted the first meeting of the Where We At group of black women artists in her apartment, which grew into one of the first group show of professional black women artists in New York City.

Art Inspiration Challenge
My art quilters group, Fiber Visions, challenged members to create a quilt inspired by a work from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. Here is Skiffs, by Gustave Caillebotte, full of color, angles, and motion.
Tumblr media
First, I immersed myself in the color, using a technique called "artful log cabins" by quilt artist extraordinaire Katie Pasquini Masopust. I call this "Take Me to the Water" (24"x31").
Tumblr media
But wait! What else can I do with this palette?
Tumblr media
Print the words of a French folk song, "Mon Petite Bateau," onto fabric and play with the boat image? Here is "Let's Row" (24"x11").
Tumblr media
And for good measure, find another photo I took on the C&O Canal near Georgetown, Washington, D.C., and go for "Local Motion" (24"x11").

Between relocating to Wisconsin, starting grad school and the onset of the pandemic, 2019-2020 has not been my most productive year in the studio. So it felt extra good to finish this baby off last night! 💖💙👁💙💖 All the fabric is hand dyed; the back is screen printed with dye. The stripes are made with 1/8” piping sewn in between the pieced panels. The eye motif in the center is hand appliquéd. The top is machine pieced and 100% of the quilting stitches were done by hand. The tassels are also handmade. 💖💙 👁 💙💖 When I told my faculty this was a baby quilt, I, well... got a lot of pushback. But in my mind, this is the quilt I want to give to every new baby that comes into my life. An all seeing eye for guidance and protection, plus the eyes of your community and the world surrounding you on the backing. It represents care and hope and blessing and love. Plus a little flamboyance with the tassels just for fun. I know it isn’t super functional but, like, that’s not the point of art?? Anyway. Welcome to the world, quilt. I’ve got my eye on you. 💖💙👁💙💖 #quilt #quilting #handquilting #dye #dyersofinstagram #quiltersofinstagram #sewing #alternativequilting #piping #allseeingeye #art #fiberart #textiles #textileart #artquilt #ivegotmyeyeonyou (at Madison, Wisconsin) https://www.instagram.com/p/CFX6JguBoi1/?igshid=7vucfgdtnzdw

I am delighted to share my newest work, Under the Pink Moon. The second in an emerging new series about the folkloric names ascribed to full moons throughout the year. Under the Pink Moon represents April, when the full moon shines down on the tender emerging foliage and flowers of spring. The center panels are direct solar dye prints of garlic mustard, Virginia creeper, and dock leaves, all very prevalent in the woodlands of Pennsylvania. The vintage hexagon blocks, pieced from feedsack cottons, are bordered with vivid silks. I had a tremendous amount of fun designing and stitching this one together. I love vintage blocks-- these had been neatly, if not entirely accurately, handstitched, and as I worked I thought of the anonymous woman who had made them, and wondered what her hopes and dreams and plans had been. I realized when I finished that this is an extremely rare quilt for me; there are no cyanotype blues in it! Let the appliqué begin! Quilting makes me realize that I should have paid more attention in geometry and math, ESPECIALLY if I’m going to design my own Cathedral mandala quilt! Cutting a circle into 10 equal parts was a feat.... but when all else fails, YOUTUBE! I’ve been working on this 58”x58” art quilt since 3 AM, and can’t wait to get to appliqué all the pieces now that they are pinned. . . .
