Part of the reason I wonder why Arcane was such a hit is because the writers admitted to having never written such a thing before, so they went back to basic writing fundamentals and weren’t ‘poisoned’ by other media.

Not to say Arcane wasn’t influenced or hasn’t paid homage to things that came before it (because nothing exists in a vacuum), but a lot of media has a tendency to take from previous shows etc without understanding what makes that particular trope or scene work. Anime is particularly bad at this as it seems to only take inspiration from itself, leading to an ‘incestuous’ pool of shallower and shallower content.

I think OSP said it best in their Trope Talk where Red suggests taking inspiration from a variety of sources, not just archetypes, and Arcane knocked it out of the park in this regard.
