Patti Smith (1946-) solo Songs: "Gloria," "Because the Night" Defeated Opponents: Lee Morse, Tammi Terrell Propaganda: "Bisexual legend, hung around with Blue Öyster Cult and then the New York new wavers. The punk poetess, rough around the edges but with a heartbreaking voice. She never cared what anyone thought of her and she's iconic for that, and she really deserves more recognition for her work imo" "Obsessed with the way she blended poetry and rock n' roll. Multi-talented icon. Also the photos of her and Robert Mapplethorpe? HOT." "Beautiful voice, and an androgynous look I would kill for"
Dolly Parton (1946-) solo Songs: "Jolene," "I Will Always Love You" Defeated Opponents: Alice Coltrane, Ruth Brown Propaganda: "One of the best country (and any) musicians to grace us with her talents for decades! A bimbo with a brain and we love her! Beyoncé and Whitney Houston covered her songs. This woman supports women! And literacy! But also her voice is one of a kind and she knows how to command any stage she's on." "She's one of the world's best-selling musicians and she's an actress! Shes's also an advocate for LGBT rights, gives money to HIV/AIDS research, and many more causes. She donates one book per month to every kid born in Tennessee up until they're 5 years old. She put a lot of money into COVID research. Her large chest is so well-known that it's been written about in songs, military tanks have been named after her, and Dolly the cloned sheep shares her name. Also, she apparently wrote Jolene and Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You in the same day!" "She's adorable. She's funny. She smart and business savvy enough that she would probably be a billionaire if she wasn't also a genuinely wonderful human being who gives tons and tons of money away to various charities and causes. She's so supportive of younger artists and artists of color and the queer community. She's always so gracious and genuinely excited when new artists cover her songs. She's the best thing to ever come from the state of Tennessee and I love her entirely. We do not deserve her but I'm glad we have her."

Don't Go Breaking My Heart
Written By: Bernie Taupin & Elton John
Artist: Elton John & Kiki Dee
Released: 1976
In the book 1000 UK #1 Hits, Kiki Dee talked about the idea behind this song: “Both Elton and I were big fans of those duets on Motown by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell and there hadn’t been any around for a bit—we thought we’d do one ourselves.” This song became John’s first #1 single in the UK and his sixth #1 in the US.
[Verse 1: Elton John & Kiki Dee] Don't go breaking my heart I couldn't if I tried Oh honey if I get restless Baby you're not that kind Don't go breaking my heart You take the weight off of me Oh honey when you knock on my door Ooh, I gave you my key [Pre-Chorus: Elton John, Kiki Dee & both] Ooh, nobody knows it When I was down I was your clown Ooh, nobody knows it (Nobody knows it) Right from the start I gave you my heart Oh, I gave you my heart [Chorus: Elton John, Kiki Dee & both] So don't go breaking my heart I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart [Verse 2: Elton John & Kiki Dee] And nobody told us Because nobody showed us And now it's up to us babe Oh, I think we can make it So don't misunderstand me You put the light in my life Oh, you put the spark to the flame I've got your heart in my sights [Pre-Chorus: Elton John, Kiki Dee & both] Ooh, nobody knows it When I was down I was your clown Ooh, nobody knows it (Nobody knows it) Right from the start I gave you my heart Oh, I gave you my heart [Chorus: Elton John, Kiki Dee & both] Don't go breaking my heart I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart [Pre-Chorus: Elton John, Kiki Dee & both] Ooh, nobody knows it When I was down I was your clown Right from the start I gave you my heart Oh, I gave you my heart [Chorus: Elton John, Kiki Dee & both] Don't go breaking my heart I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my Don't go breaking my Don't go breaking my heart Don't go breaking my Don't go breaking my I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart Don't go breaking my I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart Don't go breaking my I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart Don't go breaking my I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart Don't go breaking my I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart Don't go breaking my I won't go breaking your heart Don't go breaking my heart

Demolition Lovers
Written By: Matt Pelissier, Mikey Way, Ray Toro & Gerard Way
Artist: My Chemical Romance
Released: 2002
The Demolition Lovers are the couple seen on the cover for MCR’s next album, Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge. This song, along with much of the album, is a prequel to the story of Three Cheers… in which a man makes a deal with the devil to get his dead lover back by killing 1,000 evil men and giving the devil their souls in exchange for her. This song is most likely where the lover dies. The two “Demolition Lovers” are featured on the cover of the album.
[Verse 1] Hand in mine, into your icy blues And then I'd say to you, "We could take to the highway With this trunk of ammunition, too" I'd end my days with you, in a hail of bullets [Chorus] I'm trying, I'm trying To let you know just how much you mean to me And after all the things We put each other through and [Verse 2] I would drive on to the end with you A liquor store or two keeps the gas tank full And I feel like there's nothing left to do But prove myself to you, and we'll keep it running [Chorus] But this time, I mean it I'll let you know just how much you mean to me As snow falls on desert sky Until the end of everything I'm trying, I'm trying To let you know how much you mean As days fade and nights grow And we grow cold [Post-Chorus] Until the end, until this pool of blood Until this, I mean this, I mean this, until the end of [Chorus] I'm trying, I'm trying To let you know how much you mean As days fade and nights grow And we grow cold But this time, we'll show them We'll show them all how much we mean As snow falls on desert sky Until the end of every [Interlude] All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this All we are, all we are is bullets, I mean this [Guitar Solo] [Bridge] As lead rains will pass on through Our phantoms forever, forever Like scarecrows that fuel this flame We're burning forever and ever Know how much I want to show you You're the only one Like a bed of roses There's a dozen reasons in this gun [Outro] And as we're falling down, and in this pool of blood And as we're touching hands, and as we're falling down And in this pool of blood, and as we're falling down I'll see your eyes, and in this pool of blood I'll meet your eyes, I mean this forever!

Marvin Pentz Gay Jr.; April 2, 1939 – April 1, 1984) was a singer-songwriter and record producer. He was one of the artists during the 60s that helped shape the sound of Motown. He started his career in a vocal quartet called The Marquees; he then was a session singer for Chuck Berry and others. He began writing songwriting after The Marquees broke up, relocated to Detroit, and became an in-house session player for Motown Records. He was one of the first artists to embark as a solo artist. His solo career was filled with numerous hits, including “Let’s Get It On, What’s Going On, and Ain’t No “Mountain High Enough,” which he sang with Tammi Terrell that Nick Ashford wrote (of Ashford and Simpson), the song is seen as a love song but, its a song of overcoming adversity or any way you want to interpret it. After putting out numerous hit singles, Gaye earned the titles “ Prince of Soul and “ Prince of Motown.” Gaye’s later work has influenced most contemporary R&B subgenres and overlooked genres such as quiet storm and neo-soul. In the late 70s, he released what is considered Gaye’s music, spoke of love, reflected on what was going on in society, and made fantastic love songs. He has been inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and received numerous posthumous awards, including the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Gaye is one of the most influential artists in popular music. Gaye and his music will continue to be played, influenced, and appreciated by many artists and fans today.

Borja Flames - Nuevo Medievo
He has three brains, a thousand lives, past or parallel, and his name is Borja Flames. Spanish, Parisian, Burgundian, cosmonaut, we don’t know anymore. His head is that of a pope, a king, a lion, a faun or a melancholic centaur. He is well dressed, with pot holes and beard : Merovingian. We knew him in June and Jim of which he was the southern face (the northern hemisphere being Marion Cousin), a duo recently transfigured under the name of Catalina Matorral, real electronic pastoral. We saw him reshuffle his cards for the first time in 2016 with Nacer Blanco, the first album under his name, whose tipsy clocks, totems like the Tower of Pisa and bony madrigals evoked Moondog, Robert Wyatt and the Postman Cheval, one inside the other, helter-skelter. After which Rojo Vivo (2018) a blend of pale house and tenebrous preachings made us fear and pleasure and dance. Nuevo Medievo which appears today (Les disques du Festival Permanent / Murailles Music) is even more beautiful, more striking. From the very beginning, sung on tiptoe, the silvery voice with robotic effects on a synthetic bedside rug spiked with cymbals makes us feel bareheaded in a vast cabinet of stars, we are captivated. There are laser beams, oracle lyrics with vocoder. Paul Loiseau, the Morse drummer, makes the kitchen set sound like an orchestra of stoned calculators, then Borja Flames accelerates the record’s pulse with the diction of a fed-up TV news anchor before a jungle background until Marion Cousin and Rachel Langlais make everything capsize, she of saturnian vocalization, she of a strangely regulated synth. Then on, the hits fall here, there, everywhere, real ones, a shower of asteroids. Negro Negro is suave, mysterious, moving, as surprising as a kiss we no longer expect. We would gladly listen to her only but then comes Magnetismo making us giddy with joy. Then Marioneta, dry and airy as a Sign O’The Times period Prince, which one could dance to endlessly, even alone, head tucked under arm. Nuevo Medievo moves this way throughout, stiff and groovy, cerebral but exploding with dreamy tumors. Powerfully entertaining, filled with odd rhythms, computer choirs, keyboards that slide and are slippery. Nuevo Medievo is a bit reminiscent of the synth-wave scene and 80s Iberian post-punk. It also evokes lo-fi versions of Franco Battiato‘s panoramic SF hits from the album No Time No Space (far away worlds, sound research, fat refrains), Arthur Russel disco, or even Porque te vas, yes yes, Sade, Motown B-sides played at the IRCAM one evening of blunt slackness, Marvin Gaye and Tammy Terrel in a full-on slow dance under the anachronistic neon lights of a chicha bar or Blade Runner rushes with the Miami Vice original soundtrack. If Nuevo Medievo, like all of music loving cannibal Borja Flames’ records, summons a certain number of other artists, it does so to organize unexpected meetings between them, and to dissect each one in a scientific, erotic, amorous and gastronomic impulse before freeing himself from them and drawing in all the diagonals of authentically unheard features. Throw him a party. Txt : Sing Sing Translation : Cathérine Hershey Music & Lyrics by Borja Flames. Produced and arranged by Borja Flames with the collaboration of Marion Cousin, Paul Loiseau and Rachel Langlais. Recorded in Lucy-sur-Cure, Cinq-Mars La Pile and Saint-Aubin du Cormier. Mix by Manuel Duval at Grange Cavale. Mastering by Harris Newman at Grey Market. Personnel : Rachel Langlais (synths, vocals), Marion Cousin (synths, vocals, percussions), Paul Loiseau (percussions, vocals, synths), Borja Flames (vocals, guitar, synths, percussions, programming, samples).

been listening to old music lately here are some of my thoughts
- Isn't she lovely by Stevie Wonder - is actually just so fucking cute. "Life and Love are the same - Love is Aisha"?? My heart is overflowing. Fucking superb
- ain't no mountain high enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell - is actually about the love for friends. You can think about your partner while listening to it but only bc your partner should be your best friend/ one of your best friends anyway
- it's raining men by the weather girls - first of all I didn't know that the name of the band probably was the reason why the song was called that. Nice pun. I like it. Also the chorus of them actually singing "it's raining men" might be the worst part of the song. The best being the "Don't you lose your head" part. Also watch the music video. The editing is partly hilarious and just after the best part they have one of the two singers lay on the ground and lower a men with the help of a harness and ropes on her and it looks like he doesn't know what to do with his legs (literally the only part that will be seen in the video) and he almost just steps on her which is FUNNY but why didn't they just redo that shot?? Lmao
- a lot more just-some-guys™ (gender neutral) artists which is exactly what I want
- so so so many of these songs are either actually some of the best song writing you will ever see and then the other half is just the same fucking sentence again and again and again and again and again for like 5minutes and as soon as you notice that with every repetition you get more and more agitated
- same goes for the actual music when you ignore the lyrics and it's just like a fucking 5 second long tune and it's on loop for the rest of the song and in some songs it's the most annoying fucking thing and they could be used to actually drive me into violent insanity or it fucks severely. The other 15% are some of the best music you ever heard even though the entire 9 hour long playlist in total only uses 3 chords. These songs actually make it a lot less obvious that that is happening ( I don't know jack about music)
- there is so much more harmonising in these songs. Which is good. I like that.

Throwback: Happy 85th Birthday, Marvin Gaye!
Throwback: Happy 85th Birthday, Marvin Gaye! @MarvinGayeMusic @MarvinGayeForum
Aries season is a very busy period in music history. And it continues through April: The legendary Gil Scott-Heron, who was born 75 years ago on April 1. The legendary Marvin Gaye was born 85 years ago today. Gaye was arguably one of the most celebrated and influential artists in soul and R&B — and for a reason. My mom considers his duets with Tammi Terrell as some of the greatest duets ever…

Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Written By: Valerie Simpson & Nickolas Ashford
Artist: Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
Released: 1967
“Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” marked the first collaboration between soul artists Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell in terms of releases. It was the first single from their debut album United where it also appeared as the opening track on the record. Although they kept their relationship as professional as could be, the two were practically inseparable with most describing them as “brother and sister.” At Terrell’s funeral after her tragic death at the mere age of 24, her mother barred everyone at Motown from attending except Gaye (who also delivered the eulogy) as she felt he was her only friend there. Perhaps there really was no mountain, valley or river that could ever come between them. The song was listed by writers of the UK publication NME as one of the Top 150 Singles of All Time, and the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. The song would go on to be covered by dozens of artists, including Diana Ross, The Supremes and The Temptations, as well as the songwriters Ashford & Simpson among others.
[Verse 1] Listen, baby Ain't no mountain high Ain't no valley low Ain't no river wide enough, baby If you need me, call me No matter where you are No matter how far Don't worry, baby Just call my name I'll be there in a hurry You don't have to worry 'Cause, baby, there [Chorus] Ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you, babe [Verse 2] Remember the day I set you free I told you you could always count on me, darling From that day on, I made a vow I'll be there when you want me, someway, somehow Oh, baby, there [Chorus] Ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you, babe [Bridge] Oh no, darling No wind, no rain Or winter's cold Can stop me, baby (No, no, baby) 'Cause you are my goal If you're ever in trouble I'll be there on the double Just send for me, oh, baby, ha [Verse 3] My love is alive (Woo) Way down in my heart Although we are miles apart If you ever need a helping hand I'll be there on the double Just as fast as I can Don't you know that there [Chorus] Ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you, baby Don't you know that there Ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough Ain't no river wide enough Ain't no mountain high enough Ain't no valley low enough

Accidentally in Love
Written By: Adam Duritz, Dan Vickrey, David Bryson, David Immergluck & Matthew Malley
Artist: Counting Crows
Released: 2004
“I was really struggling with it. I generally don’t write songs on demand, and I almost got to the point where I thought I wasn’t going to do it. They just told me that the song had to be uplifting. They actually said, ‘Don’t write a song about Shrek. Write a song that’s about you.’ The funny thing is, the song ended up reflecting a lot of what was going on in my life at the time: falling in love with someone you’re not supposed to fall in love with because it’s inconvenient. My songs for Counting Crows are mature and generally don’t get a chance to reach kids. To be part of something like that is pretty cool.” – Adam Duritz via Billboard
[Verse 1] So, she said, "What's the problem, baby?" What's the problem? I don't know Well, maybe I'm in love (Love) Think about it Every time I think about it Can't stop thinking 'bout it How much longer will it take to cure this? Just to cure it, 'cause I can't ignore it if it's love (Love) Makes me wanna turn around and face me But I don't know nothin' 'bout love, uh [Chorus] Come on, come on Turn a little faster Come on, come on The world will follow after Come on, come on Because everybody's after love [Verse 2] So I said, I'm a snowball runnin' Runnin' down into the spring that's comin' All this love meltin' under blue skies Belting out sunlight, shimmering love Well, baby, I surrender To this strawberry ice cream Never-ever-ender All this love Well, I didn't mean to do it But there's no escaping your love, oh [Bridge] These lines of lightnin' mean we're never alone Never alone No, no [Chorus] Come on, come on Move a little closer Come on, come on I wanna hear you whisper Come on, come on Settle down inside my love, ohh Come on, come on Jump a little higher Come on, come on If you feel a little lighter Come on, come on We were once upon a time in love [Post-Chorus] We're accidentally in love, accidentally in love Accidentally in love, accidentally in love Accidentally in love, accidentally in love Accidentally in love, accidentally in love Accidentally, I'm in love, I'm in love [Refrain] I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love, I'm in love Accidentally, I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love, I'm in love I'm in love, I'm in love Accidentally [Chorus] Come on, come on (Come on) Spin a little tighter Come on, come on (Come on) And the world's a little brighter Come on, come on (Come on) Just get yourself inside her love I'm in love

This weekend on Popstand
Much burning of the midnight oil preparing the Popstand playlists for this weekend. A bumper bundle of multi-genre musical tracks for your enjoyment is set to come your way, including music by the following artists:
Los Del Rio, Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, April Stevens, George Harrison, The Style Council, Armin van Buuren, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, The Casinos, Death Cab for Cutie, Paul Simon, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, 3rd Shift, The Doors, Lauren Daigle, Hot Chocolate and many, many more…
Also on Saturday’s show I’m going to tell you about this app I’ve found called Plura. Are you a busy bee, don’t have time to play games, but wish there was just one game that you don’t have to devote too much of your precious to.
I have found just the game that may just suit your requirements. It’s an app for your iPhone called Plura, that shouldn’t take any more than 30 seconds of your day each day to play. In brief you’re presented once a day with 3 multiple choice questions. You have to try to guess the same answers as others and do so quickly to gain points and work your way up the daily/weekly/monthly/all time leaderboard.
So wanna try it out? Get over to the App Store and download Plura. Here’s the link
https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/plura/id6443806417
Create an account in a similar manner to which you create accounts for all those other social apps, and await the notification to answer the questions for the day.
As I said you get asked 3 multiple choice questions each day, and it’s not really a case of guessing the correct answer, if indeed there is a correct answer, but choosing the answer that is most popular by everyone else. The first question has 2 possible answers, the second 3 possibilities and the third has 4 choices. And the closer you are to the most popular answer of each question the more points you are awarded.
But, and it’s a big but, you mustn’t take too long on deciding on your answers as points are deducted for each second that goes by before you answer. So the pressure is on.
So you’ve downloaded the app, you’ve created an account and a notification has arrived and you’ve answered your first set of questions. It won’t be until the following day that you’ll get to know how you’ve done, when you receive the next notification prompting to answer that day’s questions. Once you’ve answered said questions you’ll be able to view your placing in the leaderboard and a summary of the most popular answers can be viewed with a reminder of how you answered the previous day.
And that is basically about it, although there is one other function of the app and that is the ability to create a group. This allows you to play the game against a group of people you or perhaps fellow Radio Popstand listeners. I have created a group within Plura called ‘Popstand’.
https://plura.page.link/1SgEM5bJr5ETpmgE6
That is the link to join the Popstand group on Plura, join and we can all see how we get on with the app.
As I say once you get the hang of the game, it should take no more than 30 seconds or so per day to play.
Happy Plura-ing!
Now there was a question a few days ago on Plura asking who is the best Beatle, rather surprising the results that came our way the following day.
First place is Paul McCartney with 50%
Second place John Lennon with 38%
Third place with 8% was Ringo Starr
And unbelievably George Harrison scored only 3%
Those of you that are good at arithmetic will see that only totals 99%, I can only assume that is due a rounding down of the percentages.
But anyway 3% for poor George, I should the app must be used mainly by youngsters that are not aware of the excellence of Mr Harrison. We need to educate you people that may not of heard George Harrison’s music, and that is the reason you will see an abundance of George Harrison tracks on Radio Popstand this weekend.
Happy listening!
Jeff Wright, 21st April 2023
