Karma's a Bitch

The idiom "Karma's a bitch" is of unknown origin. Karma is a concept originating from Dharmic religions that deals with cause and consequence. In simplified terms, it postulates that a person's actions and intent influence their future. Cause and consequence. It's often referred to as the principle of karma. Good actions and intent create a brighter future (good karma), whereas bad actions and intent bring about a worse future (bad karma).

A bitch has several meanings. For the purposes of this prompt we'll focus on two. It could be an informal way to refer to a female dog. As slang, it can also reference something unpleasant (for example, humidity in summer) and not necessarily a person.

Karma's a bitch is most often used regarding how an individual's actions will come back and bite them (negative actions or intent garnering negative consequences). Rarely it can be used in a more positive light. Dogs are notoriously loyal creatures. If one helps a dog, it's likely the dog will take a shine to them. As such, if someone does good deeds, their consequences will be positive as well.

The phrase gained notoriety for becoming a lip-sync trend in 2018. People participating would lip-sync to a voice clip of the character Veronica from the show Riverdale saying "Karma's a bitch" preceding a slideshow of pictures demonstrating some sort of physical transformation or "glow-up" accompanied by the song Gucci-Gucci by artist Kreayshawn.

This prompt deals with consequences. Good or bad, they lead, or are at least intrisically related to, a death. The principle of karma is inescapable for the characters of stories written with this prompt; with characters' past actions forging their demise. Or alternatively, something can go horrifically wrong during a lip-sync social media trend. Maybe even as a consequence of some past dastardly action.

What genre is this? My whole life I’ve LOVED “glittery beep-boop” music (it’s the best I can describe it) like songs by Lady Tigra, Kreayshawn, The Pom-Poms that kind of vibe, but I’m unfamiliar w/ what category that would fall under so I can find artists that are similar, and enjoy that same refreshing and fun feeling I get when I hear their songs. I have a bit of relevant context here: I saw Brokencyde for the first time like… last year. Seeing them when I was younger and their first track came out, I wrote them off immediately.

However - the show they played was Subculture, which is a semi-underground party/rave that hosts tons of hyperpop and other EDM artists, live acts, DJ sets and more. The crowd is generally very queer and Gen Z-ish (I’m definitely on the older end there).

The type of acts that were there are generally smaller acts, but you had things like a Kreayshawn DJ set, a Pussy Riot performance, etc. Brokencyde was not the headliner, they were on one the side stages. However, the crowd was absolutely fucking PACKED for Brokencyde. The crowd was legitimately into it, and for the duration of that show, I actually understood them. They put on a terrific show. They ended up being one of the headliners for the next shows.

To the person who said they were ahead of their time: absolutely. Whether they paved the way for hyperpop or not is a discussion beyond me, but they have legitimately found their audience.

Do we have to admit Brokencyde were ahead of their time? Did they pave the way for hyperpop?

I think you'd probably have to ask the people making hyperpop? Like there's probably some kind of lineage there but sometimes hyperpop seems like one of those genres where someone, AG Cook, I don't know, pioneered it and everyone else just started making music like that, making the genre almost self-referential and self-influencing at a certain point.

It's probably reductive, but I always viewed it as a situation where someone woke up one day and said "what if instead of doing nightcore versions of existing songs we just started writing and recording brand new nightcore?" Which, given the lineage of nightcore is probably impossible, but it's still fun to think about.

Sometimes the best songs are like a bar of chocolate... short, sweet and a little burst of energy without being too serious... Kreayshawn's classic viral hit "Gucci Gucci" has to be my favourite one of these chocolatey tunes.
