The White Label Auction in Aid of The BRIT Trust – the world’s only known auction of “white label” test pressings – takes place next week on Tuesday, 6th June 2023. This year it will have more than 200 lots of highly collectible ‘white-label’ test pressings – the most offered in the four editions of the auction to date since it began in 2019.

The online/on-site auction is once again being hosted by music memorabilia and vinyl records specialists Omega Auctions from their Newton-Le-Willows (Greater Manchester) base. The full catalogue can be accessed here.

Fans and collectors can bid from a huge selection of white label test pressings that rarely come to market, with some even signed by the artists such as The Cure, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, New Order, and Wilko Johnson.

The UK’s record labels led by Universal Music UK, who founded the event with the BPI, along with BMG, Domino Recordings, Cherry Red, Sony Music Entertainment UK, Warner Records and others, each year join forces to curate a broad selection of white label auction lots to raise funds for the vital work of music industry charity The BRIT Trust – which promotes education and wellbeing through music and the creative arts to support causes that include the BRIT School and Nordoff and Robbins.

In January the BPI reported that vinyl albums had recorded a 15th year of consecutive growth in the UK, with over 5.5m LPs purchased in 2022. This rising demand for vinyl has in turn resulted in a growing archive of white label test pressings – so called because there is no sleeve artwork at this early stage – which record labels produce ahead of the full release of an album to ensure its audio quality. With only a handful produced, these first-off-the-press copies are snapped up by collectors on the rare occasions they become available, as evidenced by the huge interest in the three White Labels Auctions to date, which between them have raised around £100,000.

R.I.P. Amp Fiddler

Detroit funk legend Joseph "Amp" Fiddler died Sunday at age 65 after a battle with cancer. Fiddler's legend was built from his years as a keyboardist for Parliament-Funkadelic, album credits, solo work, and mentoring J.Dilla. Fiddler's work as a musician and songwriter was heard across genres among various artists. He racked up more than 400 credits with Cheryl Lynn, George Clinton, Seal, Was Not Was, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Warren Zevon, Prince, Maxwell, The Brand New Heavies, Primal Scream, MC Breed, Moodymann, Raphael Saadiq, Sly Dunbar, Corinne Bailey Rae and more.  Solo albums like Waltz Of A Ghetto Fly and Afro Strut showcased his soulful, raspy vocals and funky keyboard playing, infusing a bluesy melodic stillness into the music. 

As a live performer, he was a capable showman, always at his sartorial best and fully engaged with his audiences worldwide. In his Detroit hometown, he was a local legend and a point of nurture for many artists. This sense of community was seen in projects like The Detroit Experiment, which included an eclectic group of artists from the city. He famously taught J.Dilla how to use an MPC and arranged the life-changing meeting between the young producer and Q-Tip. His humility and accessibility belied a resume of extraordinary achievements and his status as a well-respected industry secret. Earlier this year, Fiddler collaborated with London house music DJ and producer Luke Solomon on the single "Come On Over."

1. ‘Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald’ by Gordon Lightfoot. Starting listening a lot after Gordon’s recent passing, it’s always been one of the few songs that can give me the chills. Some of the most moving lyrics ever put to paper, imho.

2. ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’ by Mama Cass. Came from the meme, stayed for a gentle anthem by one of my unrealized favourite vocalists (I’m chronically bad at matching up songs to artists, courtesy of primarily consuming music via radio during my youth 😅).

3. ‘Float’ by Janelle Monae (feat. Seun Kuti & Egypt 80). I’ve been a fan of Janelle Monae for 8-9 years now and the control they maintain over their music and performance is just captivating in a way I tragically can’t articulate.

4. ‘I Love Me Too’ by KIRBY. Truly a bop of all bops. It was my top played song for last year, it’s the theme song for my favourite OC (don’t @ me LOL), and lord knows we need some more self-love jams out there. I love songs where there’s a genuine enthusiasm/laughter in the artist’s voice and this is all that.

5. ‘Girl, Put Your Records On’ by Corinne Bailey Rae. This is just- the most song of all time to me. I danced to it in my childhood bedroom every time it came on my CD radio. It evokes a certain kind of contentment that I aspire to on a daily basis. It’s just a consistently lovely song.

If the art fucks and they happen to not b my thing, 100% yes, but usually I'll at least give the band/artist of any merch I own a try at least, and I usually like them

Most of my music listening begins around the 60s and 70s tbh I'm thinking hard....OH anything Cab Calloway!! This song first got me into him

Also I just love jazz, so I listen to some old mixes but nothing jumped out right away

Corinne Bailey Rae first got me to actually listen to music regularly, I was a little odd duck and didn't listen to any music on my own or care abt it until I was around 12, I only listen to her sometimes now but she's great
