This is what progress looks like.

As you can see, pic 1 turned to shit, but looked ok enough for me to continue. Pic 2 turned to major shit but I did learn why it’s important to start with large soft shadow parts first, and then hone in. Pic 3 looks passable, largely due to me applying the knowledge of starting with soft shadows combined with discovering and having the courage to use smooth watercolour brush in Clip. It’s not about making a good pic, especially not at first. It’s about doing stuff over and over until you learn enough by doing to be able to make something good. This won’t happen the first time, and very rarely by the second. After about 3-5 studies, things will noticeably improve. I’m not a complete beginner, either - I digitally painted 10-20 simple studies of drapery to learn the ropes of digital painting tools, which might have aided this process.
