So I read Bloodmarked and feel the strong urge to write a 'fix it' fic for a certain love story.
spoilers, obviously
the insane desire to fix the Sel/Bree dynamic - starting in book 1 - is strong
Sel should have remained combative to Bree in book one, not suddenly turn and fall madly in love with her by the end of the book. He should have only stayed with her for duty because she's Arthur's Scion and it should have been made clear in the story that it was killing him staying with Bree because he's bonded to Nick.
He should have still been combative as she doesn't want to stay hidden, but it should have been 100% duty as to why he was staying with her and protecting her.
BREE should have actually done things to change his mind, not just be the main character. She should have studied past Order dangers they faced and how they overcame them, she should have kept training with weapons and her aether, she should have actually DONE things to try to get Nick back (giving updates after her bloodwalks), and should have worked tirelessly to help others and learn enough to really help in this war.
AND she should have shown how she's different from just any other Scion - she should have pushed for a different perspective, sought out others to help in the battle since she does know about others who use magic. She should have pushed for inclusion and bringing everyone into this fight in the ways they can instead of just leaving it to the Order. She should have researched more about Merlins through this study of magic and perhaps pointed out inconsistencies in the official records, she should have gotten empathy after seeing how much is expected of Merlins and the standards they have to keep and the punishments if they don't - giving her understanding for Sel's position and why he behaved the way he did in book 1. She should have kept in touch with the Lieges who are part of this war, but have different perspectives too.
They should have SEEN each other DOING things to protect people and fight demons SEPARATELY rather than Sel only existing to protect Bree when she's done something stupid or someone is after her. Bree should have DONE something other than run around helpless and complaining about being helpless until she explodes with power.
They should have learned to RESPECT each other for their own actions and histories and seeing how hard each other are trying to do the right thing - and always butting heads because their methods are so different. KEEP the arguments! KEEP the conflicting perspectives - but have them argue with RESPECT for each other, pleading their own cases, but never devolving to petty shit since, you know, they should be focused on protecting people from Camlann.
---
THEN.
THEN! When Bree is attacked and is bleeding out and Sel gives all his energy to keep her alive, THAT'S when he realizes that he's not just saving her because she's the Crown Scion, he's saving her because she's Bree. He can't stop thinking about what would be taken from the world if BREE is dead (her desire to bring together the different communities, her desire to help others even when she can't access her power, her questioning of long-held beliefs and push back on how Merlins are treated and how enslaved all the Legendborn are to the Order's rules down to who they're allowed to marry and her desire to change that) and that he didn't think once about the cost to the Order or the Lines. THEN we can have his change and the slow burn enemies-to-lovers become apparent.
Nix all this 'you're the most strongest, beautifulest, bravest, phenomenal person I've ever met' bullshit - since he can't give examples of her ever being those things! If you think you can come up with reasons, give me some that don't revolve around her power or her attempting to claim her authority - give me some examples of her ACTUALLY HELPING people. As it stands, the narrative only gives us 'Bree is super powerful and pretty and that's enough to make her brave' - no actual action on her part, just how she was born.
Idk, all the tension was just like......we GET IT! She and Sel LIKE EACH OTHER!!! The narrative just has to have arbitrary reasons they can't be together even though they're very clearly attracted to each other! Sel was super concerned about her being out to hurt Nick in book 1, then 180 and he's in love with her now. It's ok for him to be annoyed that she's in the middle of this and she has no idea what she's doing! It's ok that he's annoyed she has such little frame of reference as to how to fight this war and lead the Order! It's ok if he's still annoyed at her in book 1 because he thinks Nick deserves a bodyguard who actually knows what they're doing!
It really pissed me off that Sel started out as a cool, very hard and sharp character, then once he decided he didn't want to kill Bree anymore, he became a completely soft butterball of a person. LET GRAY CHARACTERS KEEP THEIR EDGES!! Stop smoothing their rough parts once we're on the 'to lovers' path!!
Their whole contention could be that she's studied the Order and sees all the ways it needs to change and offer solutions - maybe specifically how the Merlins are treated - and Sel could push back because of all his self-loathing and fear of himself that the Order pushed in him and so he's always playing 'devil's advocate' for the Order and all their methods of control. Stay in line and you stay safe - they've kept Onceborn safe all these years, why fix what isn't broke and risk the chaos that would bring - chaos demons feed on. Bree could push back on him arguing 'WHO' is being helped, WHO has been kept safe? Rootcrafters hunted down by the Order? Onceborn POC who are subjugated under Vassal power given to them by the Order but wielded in the Onceborn world? The Legendborn who have no control over their lives? The Lieges who will die early because of their curse?
Have Sel and Bree actually bring up real and nuanced themes to explore in the story instead of petty shit like it was. Make their arguments MEAN something more than just 'I'm worried for your safety/You're smothering me'.
Make their rivalry real, make Bree's character DO something, and make Sel begin to question his fear of himself and the control the Order brings him. THEN they can start to have feelings for each other based on concrete actions and who each other are, not just 'oh no, he's hot'.
#bloodmarked critical#bloodmarked spoilers#bloodmarked#selwyn kane#bree matthews#briana matthews#legendborn#legendborn critical#legendborn spoilers#this whole series is an exercise in 'omg so much wasted potential'#and 'omg why is no one talking about the SYSTEMS!!???'#poorly written enemies to lovers is fix it fic fodder

Are there any characters from Welsh mythology that didn't get into popular Arthuriana, but you think would fit in really well there?
Okay, so this is a bit tricky because the whole of the Mabinogion can be interpreted as being just another facet of Arthuriana in a way. After all, a) Pryderi and Manawydan are two of King Arthur's attendants in Culhwch ac Olwen which, therefore, means that they must be there after their adventure in Branches 1, 2, 3 (thankfully not 4 in Pryderi's case) have already concluded. Bendigeidfran - Manawydan's brother and giant lad - has his head dug up by Arthur and so that also has to happen after branch 2 cuz that's what allows the Saxons to eventually gain a foothold in Britain after Arthur's death. Also, Gilfaethwy - Gwydion's bro, the main cause of chaos in branch 4 - is the inspo for Griflet.
HOWEVER, Because of that you can neatly slot them into wherever works best for u.
Who you can't slot in best - because where are u gonna put her? - is Blodeuwedd. She's not somebody who I'd consider as able to slot in because she's an owl. Her entire thing is tied to the Branch Four escapades. However, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE HER THERE. @wildbasil has some real great art where she in owl form hangs out with gwyn ap nudd and his brother edern and that works superbly well.
I also think that the entirety of what occurs with Cantre'r Gwaelod would be fascinating to explore through an Arthurian lens. Think about it. A whole kingdom - a whole island! - gets swallowed in the sea! And you can still hear the warning bells ringing out across the sea. You could tie them back to the fall of Camelot, to the failure to keep things in check, to people gradually getting complacent and perhaps a little corrupt. It would be SO FUN. And also you could perhaps have it be God's vengeance too.
Plus Lludd and Llefelys. It's BANGING. It could be another quest for the knights to undertake. You have three magical 'quests' that Lludd has to undertake (which are pretty easy to overcome but the possibilities? Endless.) There's a race of magical creatures called the Coraniaid, a demonic race of people who can hear EVERYTHING (which is also the same power Gwydion's uncle, Math, has who is another dude I think would be BRILLIANT in an Arthurian story!), a mysterious screaming that causes every woman to miscarry which is eventually found to be a red dragon (Y Draig Goch my beloved) and a white dragon (those peaky Saxons) fighting, and last but not least a wizard who he has to defeat by dunking himself in a bucket of water so doesn't fall asleep. (It makes sense in context, I promise.) Lludd - king of Londonium - undertakes the quests while his older brother, Llefelys, King of Gaul gives him invaluable advice. I have always thought that it should be made into a story because you could connect it to Merlin (the dragons are buried I'm Dinas Emrys which is literally 'Emrys'/Merlin's Hillfort' because he uncovers them and lets them FIGHT!!!! (Red dragon wins if ur wondering.)
(Also, you could slot Tŵm Sion Cati in there if u wanted. He's very much a Robin Hood archetype - and also his stories are set centuries after the Arthurian mythos (16th century during the time of Mary I /Bloody Mary) - but I mean that should not stop u.
(Doesn't stop me trying to combine all this shit together.)
Anyways!!! This ran away from me so I heartily apologise! Also, somebody will tell me, 'Sarah, you utter tit, somebody has already done these things' so I am prepped for that being the case.

Hey hey hey, I'm back and this is continuation of my Nanatsu No Taizai Rewrite, sooo
TIGI'S SEVEN DEADLY SINS REWRITE PART 2.1
Since it's a saga that are made from the scratch, the 2.1 part is only concepts. Next parts would be more detailed
Well, first of all, it starts with celebration after defeating usurpers (Hendrickson and Dreyfus) so the ultimate beginning is relatively not that different but I still wanna add some differences.
• First of all in case of having a saga between Holy Knight and Ten Commandments saga, The Coffin of Eternal Darkness is still held by Meliodas.
• No that weird Guila/Gowther because I don't even know why did it exist like I slightly even remember that shit.
• In celebration we see not only Deathpierce and co, we are introduced to Denzel. With hin there would be scenes that he was secretly chained while Liones were under military junta. The Pleiades of Azure Sky didn't know that Denzel was arrested and not on some important mission.
• Denzel is Acting Great Holy Knight while there's a power vacuum. Veronica is the part of The Pleiades.
• Also I want to give some character development to fellow holy knights. I see Nakaba tried it but because of power level gap they are so irrelevant, so they just couldn't do anything significant (I'll write about them separate post)
• There would be an arc for Howzer, Gilthunder and Griamore, they're investigating all the weird facts about Dreyfus.
• Jericho and Gustaf also would get their arcs (and Gustaf will see that his sister CAN be holy knight)
• Main antagonist of saga: Baldour. Major antagonists: Hengist and Horsa (Hengist will change a side in final, while Horsa will die in the end of middle of saga)
• The main plot starts from Ban visiting Fairy Forest like in canon, everything like in canon, even attack of albion. But if in canon it was because of resurrection of Ten Commandments, in my AU both albions were found by Baldour and activated. They're not full power because I think for demonic weapons they're kinda weak in canon.
• After defeating albions, Ban, King and Jericho are decided to go back to sins, understanding that danger is near and they still need to protect everything they care about.
• Other group of sins was attacked when they moved to Camelot and unlike canon the albion appeared behind them, ambushing them. Everything else went canon way.
• In fact they moved to Camelot as the centre for britts to defend their lands against Anglo-Saxon army and their leaders: brothers Hengist and Horsa and their mentor Baldour.
• For some time Elizabeth would be trained by druids to use her powers, fortunately because of her being reincarnation of Goddess, she fastly gets how to use the unlocked fraction of her power, so she will not be a damsel in distress.
• I didn't come up with every arc separately but I wish for sins to be in different groups, this time it would be canon way duos. King and Diane, Merlin with Gowther, Ban and Meliodas.
• Also, Arthur will face Hengist as his rival. They are the same age and both with some unique potential. I wanna make them parallels how they both want the best for their people and both face a dozen of problems, real life and mental traumas
• Horsa is fighting, surprisingly, Escanor. I found it's weird that Merlin didn't make any artifact or device that restricts Escanor's grace power but lets him not face a significant damage for his organism so this fight is pretty much balanced. And if Escanor's strength connected to the Sun, Horsa is just very willingful to support his brother + his strength are increasing with gotten damage and by how much attacks he did use.
• Dreyfus and Hendrickson are hiding in Britannia, trying to find where's to better to create their new stronghold or which kingdom to take down. They're both feeling not very good from their internal conflict so Fraudrin is really pushing buttons here.
• King and Diane starting to feel that their feelings are mutual, also they both remember that they met each other before! It was that boy/girl back then! (They're the same age, King was just REALLY YOUNG... King. Yeas repeating). Jericho and Guila with them, for Jericho this trip also shows that it doesn't matter that she's girl and she's really strong.
• With Merlin and Gowther there's Vivian. And while Merlin os schooling her student, for Gowther she becomes interesting partner. Both of them are WEIRD, and while the one is kinda too yandere, the other is detached and can't understand what feelings he feels (alexithimia moment RAAAH). And they both are seeking how to better to behave since both of them also lacking of boundaries (btw Merlin also). Also it's them who find Escanor
• And Ban with Meliodas are followed by Elizabeth (of course) and... Gustaf. I think Gustaf would fit here good, for him it'd be really important to say every his concerns about him being older brother. Poor Ban he listened both siblings btw
• I think Gustaf is overprotective for Jericho and he doesn't want even that Jerich could be a holy knights. I think both of them are orphans and lot of problems came from that period.
• Guila and Jericho also training their control over new demonic part of their powers.
• Some Anglo-Saxon knights are using demonic blood.
• After reuniting Meliodas and Merlin are talkingz remembering past and giving hints about their lives back then and also mentioninf of commandments and curse
Also, somewhere in middle of saga, trio of holy knights (Howzer, Gilthunder and Griamore) find Dreyfus and Hendrickson. Dreyfus (& Fraudrin) doesn't want to harm his son while Hendrickosn is still weakened after fight with sins, so they're both captured. The reason why they wasn't arrested and thrown to rot in some hole or even executed was the fact that they need more info about past and also they want to help to defeat Anglo-Saxons and Baldour in particular.
Horsa dies while fighting group of sins but he was killed by Baldour because Horsa started to question all Baldour's decisions and was very not happy with his influence over his brother (like manipulative and very abusive father and his son).
Baldour is revealed as monster who is even stronger than gray Hendrickson despite not using any demon blood. Imagine being that durable and endure monster that keeps fighting even after getting Break right in face by both Dreyfus and Griamore (yes, he taught his son this technique).
Hengist only agreed to ally with Arthur only after revealing secret catacombs/labs of Baldour which contains unalived atrocities of humans, animals, plants and all experiments involved demon's blood and sometimes their body part. Even on more deep level there was a grave of demon bodies. Hengist also found out that were not sins who killed his brother but Baldour.
The final contains a big raid-like boss fight but without fighting statists. Just everyone vs Baldour. And the fight is hard, sins knocked out or barely standing on their legs, knights are almost dead and Baldour went demon-hybrid mod. He didn't just become partly demon, he infused with silver demon blood and mastered it in no time.
Also Baldour gives Meliodas, Merlin and Fraudrin evil vibes, like for human it's very weird to have such skills, it looks like he was alive for more than ten millenniums.
Baldour is killed by Arthur and Hengist in pretty brutal way. Being head exploded, cut on two part, without hand and giant hole in chest, he must be died). But before die he was smiling because he broke some orb that speaks some "chances"
Bonus facts:
Also, when Hendrickson fought everyone in previous saga, even on gray form he got damage from all attacks. In my AU even the strongest one could be scratched or even got some more serious damage if it was good synergy
I redone Gowther from emotionless to just very autistic person with alexithimia
The Pleiades Of Azure Sky would also have their arc

👻🕸️🦇 IKEVAMP SUITORS IN A HORROR-MOVIE SETTING ! 🦇🕸️👻 (headcanons)
Happy Halloween! Yes, this includes all 17 suitors. I'm no expert on the genre but I thought this might be fun! Some of them die. I'm sorry. Warnings: everything that can appear in a horror movie really, including mentions of death, mass murder, blood, gore, torture, cults.
If you feel like reading something more goofy where everyone lives, try Pumpkin Carving Competition At Saint Germain’s Mansion or maybe even “Welcome to Saint Germain’s mansion, please have a fang-tastic night.”
𝐍𝐀𝐏𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐎𝐍
The "okay guys, we need a plan" guy and welp, he has a sword, he is willing to walk in front, why not trust him? 👍🏻✨He's totally the one to hide being infected because come on, how are they gonna get out of there alive if the leader is down? Has a dramatic scene where he's fighting off the transformation in secret. Ends up being saved by someone and survives.
𝐋𝐄𝐎𝐍𝐀𝐑𝐃𝐎
Leonardo is the one you find along the journey, mistaking for an enemy at first as you get into his trap... when it actually turns out he's been there long before you, surviving all alone in this post-apocalyptic setting, adapted to it, prepared for every danger out there with gadgets he made himself! He might not stay alive until the end but plays a key role in the plot.
𝐌𝐎𝐙𝐀𝐑𝐓
He tried to warn them not to do anything stupid... He's now stuck suffering from the group's bad decision-making. He doesn't even know how he ended up there. Mozart is that one character that you're supposed to hate for being an asshole. At one point he falls in danger that specifically relates to a fear of his, and when everyone expects him to sacrifice another person to save himself, he does the opposite. He seemingly dies right there, breaking everyone's hearts, only to be revealed at the very end that he managed to survive!
𝐈𝐒𝐀𝐀𝐂 (credits for the idea goes to @scummy-writes guys she can write a whole fic of those I swear,, it's been such a pleasure listening to her)
Isaac needs to be saved five minutes into the movie... which writes him off as the weaker one from the get-go. This is going to be bad if the situation comes to "we gotta leave someone behind or we all die here!" - but hey, DON'T LEAVE ISAAC BEHIND IF YOU WANT TO SURVIVE! Because the next thing you know everyone falls into this deadly trap that only HE can figure the way out of, using his big brain skills. His worth has been proved! Everyone loves him now! And all he wants is to go back home and never go on a trip with these guys ever again!
𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐔𝐑
I'm sorry, Arthur dies first. The others are trying to warn him about the cases of victims who've been sucked to a dry husk and he's like "later virgins, i have a date tonight". Yeah his date totally killed him. Bonus points if we're dealing with vampires here, because irony. It's fine though, he's still important to the plot after he dies, because we find his writing diary and he left important cues there while trying to escape from his killer. Maybe he even came close to the truth! He knows his mystery genre stuff after all...
𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐎𝐃𝐎𝐑𝐔𝐒
Theo just does NOT believe paranormal exists, not even after witnessing it with his own two eyes. Worst part, he tries to convince the others too. "My broer IS NOT POSSESSED!" Uhuh! Okay Theo! You just saw cryptic images appear on his canvas without him even moving the brush but I guess he was just trying a new painting technique!! And he levitates too and his eyes are tar black but what do we know... Once Theo realizes the situation, he's out there swinging a bat (sexy), ready to beat the shit out of whatever caused this, and he's good at it. Don't worry about him dying.
𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄𝐍𝐓
Poor baby Vincent is every sinister ghost/demon's number-one target. Vincent listens to the voices. He sympathizes with them! He makes friends with them! Maybe he doesn't even need to be possessed at this rate... Same story with joining a cult, honestly. When their bad intentions begin to come to light, Vincent puts up a fight and is suddenly not as easy to control as they thought.
𝐉𝐄𝐀𝐍
Jean might take some bullets from our main cast while someone shouts "IT WON'T DIE!" but it's fine he's used to it... he's been dead for quite some time and not just inside. Jean is probably the result of some sick experiment about making an immortal army of warriors and. It's sad. But it's fine because he joins the protagonists now! He's friend! I hope they apologize for calling him a monster. No, he doesn't die by the end of the movie, but at what cost?
𝐃𝐀𝐙𝐀𝐈
"Oh, it was just Dazai." Of course it was, someone has to be that one idiot that scares the shit out of everyone until he becomes the boy who cried wolf. Which usually ends with death! I'm sorry Dazai. At least they can take him seriously now and pay some more attention to the strange things he kept on saying.
𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐄
A very old-school villain! Bonus points if the setting is modern yet he still has a villain's lair and all that. There's something beautiful and tragic about him and he probably dramatically lets himself be defeated even if he had a chance to escape. Everyone will remember him. Mostly for the mental and physical torture, but still.
𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐓𝐄
"But we have one hour left until the curse kills us all, how are we gonna get there on time?!" *sounds of safari jeep pulling over* "Someone ordered a ride?" - yeah. Comte is here to save the day with the power of money friendship. And not just that! Who is the one who suddenly remembers a family heirloom that is as old as time and suspiciously shaped exactly like the key they're searching for? I also want him to lose an eye or a limb for some reason... just for a little touch of gore maybe?
𝐒𝐄𝐁𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐈𝐀𝐍
Gods, Sebastian is the only prepared one, bless him for that. He's read all about that urban legend while everyone's been busy denying its existence. He is not scared at all, too... you might wonder if he's just geeking out during all of this bloody mess or something. He's so important, please don't let him die please don't let him die... he died.
𝐂𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐋𝐄𝐒
The villain's aide that infiltrates the protagonists' group. By the time his betrayal scene happens and he nearly kills three members of the group with a chainsaw, we get a glimpse of his trauma and that's the key to sucessfully talking him out of doing it, eventually disarming him and catching him. He manages to escape and maybe later returns as an ally! Yay!
𝐅𝐀𝐔𝐒𝐓
Gods he's scary. I'm not watching this. Of course he's the killer, what did you expect? Has a tragic backstory of being used by an even more fucked-up killer in the past to do the dirty work for - and kept doing it even after getting rid of them himself, because that's the only thing he knows how to do. You can't fix him.
𝐕𝐋𝐀𝐃
IT'S HIMMM he's the scary little boy from the photos and the same scary little boy that always shows up in the rose garden and his soul just won't rest in peace!! Shows up in his adult form plenty too, just expect his expression to twist into something horrible every second. He needs to be sealed forever somewhere and it would take three sequels to get to know what would actually defeat him once and for all.
𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐊𝐄
... I'm sorry but there definitely is a lighthouse in this movie. And you can totally trust Drake! The poor guy's body just washed up for you to discover, tragically drowned-oh, wait no, he's breathing. He's totally not the same sailor who died around here many, many years ago. He's gonna keep you good company in the lighthouse alone for miles.
𝐆𝐀𝐋𝐈𝐋𝐄𝐎
Galileo is the one who saw the Thing™ with his own eyes, while he was watching the stars one night ages ago. He dedicated not only his massive research but also his life to this, yet noone believes him. If he somehow manages to find that one missing piece that connects everything together, he will die a horrifying death before he can even share it with the main cast. Rip...

(AOEX) YANDERE PLATONIC SHIRO FUJIMOTO x READER, RIN & YUKIO
(REQUEST FROM AO3)
Thank you for ordering!
Come again soon!
SEQUEL (Yanplatonic Demon! Arthur A. Angel x Okumura! Reader + Exwires)
• Ooh. Not good for all three of you.
• I headcannon Shiro as insanely protective, Possessive and Manipulative in general so this really isn’t gonna be a fun time.
• You are Rin and Yukio’s sister, The youngest triplet of the children born from the union of Satan and Yuri. You, Just like Rin, Have inherited the blue flames unlike Yukio. Your heart being sealed within the hilts of twin daggers.
• Shiro’s tendencies started on The Blue Night. When he had held You, Rin and Yukio in his arms for the first time he had grown a fondness for the three of you.
• Not like he’d ever admit it though, Shiro didn’t want to take care of a bunch of demon’s brats. Especially Satan’s, He had plans to get out of here and you three weren’t going to convince him otherwise.
• It’s only when Mephisto catches him in his bet, The one where he couldn’t back down from any demon (Including Nephilim) That he’s now forced to take care of them.
• He’s pissed, Furious beyond words. Mephisto had fooled him, His plan had worked and now he was forced to take care of Satan’s spawn as apart of his bet.
• Though something unexpected happens. He grows fond of you all, Becoming the primary caretaker amongst the monks at the convent. And sure enough, He grows attached
• You are the princess of the family, Both because you’re the youngest and because.. You remind him of Yuri both personality-wise and the way your smile just causes flashes back to her.
• Due to this, You’re spoiled to high hell. Plushes, Toys, Pillows and food. Everything you could ever want would be handed to you, Thankfully being able to be paid by his wage as a paladin.
• You get away with lots too, Often being the one to take the blame for your brothers when they screw up because.. Shiro just cannot stay mad at you when you smile at him like that.
• You also get a room to yourself unlike your brothers who had to share.
• Though this comes with drawbacks such as his protective aspect going CRAZY. Like Shiro will not let you outside of the convent without him, Not even trusting Rin or Yukio.
• Shiro might even go as far as to convince you that you have an illness. That's why you cant leave, Why you’re so spoiled! Shiro may even put a few of his familiars up to “convince” you, Kin of Astaroth you cant see due to not having a temptaint.
• Rin, Is the second most spoiled though its like comparing an anthill to a mountain when next to you.
• Rin gets more spoiled in privileges such as freedom to go wherever he wants (as long as he keeps Shiro updated via text every half hour) As well as actually being able to go to a normal school unlike you being home-schooled and Yukio doing his exorcist stuff.
• Though Rin does have freedom, Shiro has installed trackers on all of his devices and makes sure that he’s being safe. Sometimes if his paranoia was up, Shiro would follow him. If any demon tries to get near him then their heads would be off with a single shell of his shotgun.
• Knowing Rin though, He gets into a lot of fights. Shiro only wants to keep Rin safe so its only natural that he never sees any of his opponents again. Maybe in a news article but don’t worry about it, He was sketchy enough so he was bound to get into trouble eventually!
• Yukio is an interesting case.
• This is where Shiro’s manipulative tendencies really start to shine, Teaching Yukio since he was a toddler about demons and how to fight them. Though the reason Shiro does it is.. For a different reason than in canon.
• Yukio gets taught to look out for both You and Rin, Gets basically indoctrinated into Shiro’s own tendencies and made to believe that this was for all of your own goods.
• This makes Yukio the peacekeeper. Since you and Rin both look up to him, You both believe him when he tells you that Shiro just wants the best after you both come to him about your suspicions
• That doesn’t mean there isn’t any love for him though. Shiro teaches him to wield a gun to make sure he can defend himself and his siblings while he is away. Shiro isolates Yukio from others, Shura being his only companion since she's Shiro’s disciple.
• Kuro, Being Shiro’s familiar is often assigned to trailing you all and giving reports on your wellbeing. No secret is safe when Kuro is on the case.
• You all often get treated with days out, Shiro enjoying spending time with his kids. Parks, Carnivals or playgrounds. Wherever you all go, Shiro makes sure to keep an eye out due to all the horrid men in this world.
• When you all were little, Swear to god this man had a three-calibre baby holder. He thought it was funny but the pictures make you cringe inside.
• If you all ever do get suspicious and try to run away, Then Shiro would get absolutely pissed.
• His own children, The kids he had raised trying to get away from him? Unacceptable. With his skills and connections as the paladin it wouldn’t be difficult to find you all again, Easy dragged back to the parish by the tails if he has to.
• You’d all be grounded to high hell. Bars on your windows, Thrown into the same room so its easier to keep an eye on you all. The monks at the parish grow weary but they can’t argue against the paladin, Who threatens them with their jobs if they snitch.
• Shiro makes sure to off any person who could’ve hurt any of his kids, Easily covering it up and moving on with his day.
• He tries to make it up to you all, To try and make sure that you all don't fear him. You don’t, Right? He’s your father, You shouldn’t be afraid!
• In truth you all are horrified. The man who raised them was a monster, Committing deeds only revealed to them now and ones that made them want to throw up.
• You are crying, Unable to accept the truth as you hide under your covers. Rin lashes out like a cornered animal, Yelling so angrily but deep down he is terrified. Yukio is in denial, Insisting that there must be some explanation for why Shiro had been acting like this.
• When Satan possesses him and he dies in a burst of blue flames, He can only hope that he did a good job. That his children, And only his will be safe.

Well I've woken up to quite the reception and I don't know how many of you saw the first bits of the au but here's more
Tma x Malevolent
+demon Oscar
Dennis "The Butcher" Collins has been "assigned" more, so a permanent arrangement to be bound to Oscar
Oscar can command him, but most of the time, he just has him help around their sanctuary.
Dennis will never admit it but he has a soft spot for Martin, and is the one to teach the boy to properly fight and use weapons.
Dennis also helps out when killing is necessary against any creature that tries to attack or on missions to stop cults.
......
Kayne dropping off Arthur only gave him a brief description of what he needed to do in the modern era.
"Stop future apocalypse, find out what these fear entities are, and don't die."
The old ones, the elder gods like KiY or Kayne, aren't aware of supernatural besides their realms because they have no sway over them, so why bother to learn or understand.
Martin looked unassuming, so Kayne just threw Arthur on him and went, "lol good luck"
Arthur, of course, is in rough shape, clothes not from this century, bloody, beaten, and barely lucid to understand what is going on.
John manifests to try to scare off Martin from dragging Arthur to the hospital.
Martin tilts his head staring at the ethereal form of John. "Are you hurting him?"
John sputters clearly out of his depth. "How dare you!"
"No hospitals, but I'm still going to take him to get help." Martin picking up Arthur.
"We don't need more questions!"
"And where I'm taking you, we won't report you to any police." Martin sighs. "You don't need to shout either. I'm taking you to the sanctuary. Well, it's a church, but not really."
"You're being too nice."
"I know what it's like to be hurt. Why would I want to make others suffer as I did?" Martin frowns as the form is silent. "What I mean to say is that everyone deserves another chance to be better."
"You are odd for a human."
"Never said I was human."
......
Tim's already at the sanctuary talking to Oscar about what Martin's up too he's a newly turned werewolf of six months so far, and Martin helped him get connections and help him during the full moons.
Dennis is the one to intercept Martin. "Boyo, what's with the half dead man in your arms?"
John is horrified. "The butcher." He uses his ethereal form to obscure Arthur from being recognized.
Dennis chuckles. "A bit young to know who I am."
"Was." Martin corrects.
Dennis huffs. "I suppose, but you didn't answer me."
"They didn't want hospitals, and obviously, they aren't human." Martin frowns. "Lilith is in, and I know she can help."
"You're too kind for the hatred that raised you." Dennis motions for him to follow. "I heard you're supposed to be following up on a case."
"They were kind of dropped on me on the way." Martin sighs following.
"Well, your friend is already here, the pup." Dennis opens a side door and shouts and a small woman rushes in grabbing Arthur and John despite protests.
........
"Aren't you supposed to be following up on the Vittery case?" Tim crossed his arms, trying his best to mimic Oscar's disappointment, then freezes seeing the blood. "What the fuck man?"
Oscar rushed forward, looking around Martin, and is stopped by Dennis.
"It's not the boys' blood." Dennis grabs Oscar's arm and pulls him away.
"That doesn't make it better!" Oscar frowns.
"Dad, I'm fine. Some guy who floated around dropped an injured guy on my way to investigate, but I wasn't going to leave the guy to bleed out." Martin sighs. "There's two in that body, so I didn't think a normal hospital would be wise."
Tim nods. "Yeah, I wouldn't want to wake up in a vets office after a full moon."
Oscar sighs. "Ok, I'll check on Lilith and how that is going. Martin, stay here. You can pick up the investigation with Dennis later."
Dennis crosses his arms. "He doesn't need a babysitter."
"This proves otherwise" Oscar waves him off.
"To be fair, he does make a good point." Tim shrugs.
"Shut up, pup." Dennis sighs heavily.
Martin smiles softly. "You don't want to help me?"
Dennis narrows his gaze. "Never said that."
.......
Oscar followed the sound of shouting, mostly from Lilith telling both voices to stop arguing. He enters cautiously. "Lilith are they alright?"
"Ah, Oscar, it's lovely to see you." Lilith is standing over a man lying in the bed awake and an ethereal figure connected to the man's shadow. "He's all bandaged up, and I fixed him the best I could considering the circumstances and tried to explain to his friend that his influence is changing the body of his so-called landlord. Ah, the ethereal fella kept calling Collins the Butcher, which, as you know what that means."
Oscar sighs. "Right right, can I speak to them, or do they need more rest?"
"They aren't demonic nor angelic or anything. I'm used to not trying to kill us like mindless drones, so he falls under yours and Noel's category. John's a bit protective over Arthur, so just be cautious."
Oscar smiles. "Thank you, Lilith." He waves as she leaves. "It's nice to meet you both, and I apologize. Lilith can get very controlling, but it's only because she's been a healer for a long time."
John's voice was slightly awed. "Oscar?"
"That I am." Oscar hums. "Could you move so I can see the man you're attached to? I would like to speak to both of you."
"You should be dead." John doesn't move.
"And how would you figure that?" Oscar raised a brow stepping forward. To see the man lying down in bed, who never looked directly at him.
"You should be missing that arm as well." John sinks back into Arthur seeing Oscar's eyes flash a black as he stiffens.
"Who are you?" Oscar relaxes himself, holding his right arm.
"Arthur Lester." Arthur pushed himself up to sit, finally able to move again.
Oscar stared stunned. "Arthur?" He tilts his head and sighs. "So this is where you vanished to? Don't worry, Noel told me about John and what he is. My it has been ages." He pulls up a chair and sits. "I hope it wasn't too awful getting here."

Episode 49
So it´s been 5 years since I last posted here. I´m honest, I forgot about it. I was busy, life was hectic, I lost two family members, both rather suddenly. But I´m doing fine - I got my MSc in biology, and will start a new job in ca. 2 weeks in a very interesting lab! I´ll post new episodes as often as I can. Not too much of the old MSA RP is left anyway.
Thank you for everyone still reading and following. I appreciate it. Really <3
-Yoshi
--------------------------------------------------------
Yoshi Raven: "Of course! You don´t have to ask that!" he squealed, grinning at Lewis while he gave Gear small pieces of his food.
"But since Vivi takes care of new missions we have to ask her if we really have a free day. Vivi!! Breakfast is ready and I´ll eat it without you!!" Arthur called, knowing she´d give him a scary glare at this. He pushed her plate away from his own, just to make sure she wouldn´t bite his hand.
Charlie McCarthey: "Here comes the blue blur now--followed by her second-in-paw, the white blur." Lewis joked as he watched the two careen around the corner and flop into their seats eagerly. They dug in, but not before Vivi noticed Lewis and brightened up.
"You look awesome, Lew--how do you feel?" She asked gently.
"Pretty good. We wanted to know if today wss a day off or if we need to go anywhere."
"Hm, well, come to think of it I did take a case a few days ago--with the two Lewis' I had to put it on hold. The owner was a really nice guy, he let us put the case off for a few days. The sooner we get started the better."
Yoshi Raven: Arthur giggled at the two racing in. He had already finished his last pancake and saw that Vivi and Mystery had eaten half of them. Within seconds. Unbelievable.
"What kind of case is it? A non-dangerous one I hope."
A small case would be nice - especially because Lewis still needed some more rest and a big fight would be bad for him.
Charlie McCarthey: "You know, I think it will be? To be honest, from what he told me over the phone, I think it's just a low level poltergiest? We're in luck--its haunting in a bar. You know what that means."
"Poltergiests can be mistaken for demonic haunts--IF they're sorrounded by negative energy." Lewis nodded. "But, if you're in a bar, chances out you're going out to have a good time."
"Exactly! So he's just sounds like a mischievous one if you ask me."
Yoshi Raven: "Oh that´s good. Maybe that ghost is just bored and likes playing pranks on people. But as long as we can help without fighting, everything will be fine."
Arthur stretched his arms and gently put Gear from his lap, then got up and put his plate in the sink.
"Actually I´m really looking forward for this mission. Getting some work done, you know. When can we leave?" he asked, looking at Vivi and Mystery with a small grin.
Charlie McCarthey: "It's three hours out, and when I asked when he wanted us to investigate he said we could do it during open hours. The ghost seems to be most active around people--another poltergiest motive."
"They do like attention." Lewis mused as he flicked his wrist,, shooing some Deadbeats away absently as he stood up too.
"If we leave in about an hour, we should get there by 3, 4 at the latest. Everyone okay with that?" Vivi checked.
"I'm good."
Yoshi Raven: "Yep, me too. I´ll check on the van until then."
He walked over to Vivi and Mystery and patted both their heads. "Don´t eat all of our food until then." Arthur mocked and quickly moved away from her tickle attack, heading towards the door.
"Lew, you coming with me?" he asked, smiling at him.
Charlie McCarthey: "Coming!" The ghost practically trilled, floating after him.
"You haven't worked on your baby in a while." He realized quietly when he saw the van sitting in its spot. He frowned a little, shifting through the memories he had to see if he--or his ghost half--was to blame.
Yoshi Raven: "I know but I have been busy in the last few days" he purred and tousled his hair.
"Besides, there was no mission where we had to drive that far away for a long time. I prefer checking before long road trips, there´s no need for a check every time we drive."
Arthur opened he engine bay and inspected it. He was quiet for a while, then grabbed a wrench and worked on some parts.
"By the way ghosts... I think I haven´t told you yet, but I was taking notes. You know, about... you. Me. Us. Our relationship. I guess this might be helpful one day. And I thought about a new spell for you... not sure if this will work, though."
Charlie McCarthey: "Yeah?" Lewis had been floating up on the roof, his arms behind his head and legs crossed as he hovered lazily in place. But at Arthur's words he sat up and shifted down, giving Arthur his attention.
"What did you have in mind?"
Yoshi Raven: "You know... I had the idea some time after that last cult incidence. I never expected that our bond could break for a while because of a high stress level." he mumbled and closed the engine bay, then leaned against the van.
"You can´t change into your Ifrit form without that connection. And that´s the thing that bothers me. I never hope it will happen again, but - what if we have to fight a dangerous monster, ghost or demon and because of whatever reason, the bond is broken again? You could go down within seconds, depending on how strong the enemy is. And that´s why I´m trying to find a solution, an emergency spell. To give you energy so you can turn into an Ifrit for, let´s say 10 minutes. Even if you don´t win the fight you could get us all out of the danger." Arthur explained with a serious look on his face. Yes, he hoped this would never happen but who knows what monster where out there.
Charlie McCarthey: "Yeah. I mean--that sounds like it could be a dozy of a spell. The monster form isn't something I can just... slip into." He winced, shuddering just by thinking about it. "Try for a shorter time period for now. 5 ought to do it, Art. Every second in a fight counts, you've got a good point. I don't want to see any of you hurt because I can't change fast enough." He sighed a little, rubbing the back of his neck tiredly.
"Be careful, alright?"
Yoshi Raven: "Don´t worry, I´ll be. I still have to do some research anyway and it´ll take more time. As soon as I finished it, we can do that spell." He walked to the ghost, hugging him for a few minutes but then got back to work on the van and check everything until they could get on the road and start the mission.
Charlie McCarthey: Lewis smooched the mechanic's cheek, and headed inside to see if Vivi and Mystery were getting ready. He was right, the two were ready to go after having their customary third helping.
"How's she look, Artie?" Vivi asked as they all headed outside. "Ready to go?"
Yoshi Raven: Arthur was already sitting on the driver´s seat, waiting for the others.
"She´s perfect as always and we could drive to the moon. Come on, get in here, I wanna drive! If you don´t hurry I´ll go alone!"
He waved at the others, a big smile on his face while he started the engine.
Charlie McCarthey: "Shotgun!" Vivi shouted. Not that there was a big demand for it, usually Arthur and Vivi were the ones who got into those competitions--Mystery liked sleeping in the van and Lewis was either driving or didn't mind sitting in the back.
Today it was the later, the ghost and dog piled onto the baxk bench and stretched out together. Lew still needed rest, and he was warm to lie against. The two soon fell asleep, Mystery head in Lewis' lap and his hand over the little dog's body.
Yoshi Raven: Arthur had put on some quiet, relaxing music for the two in the back and talked a bit with Vivi then and now, but most of the time they were silent so Lewis and Mystery could sleep some more. Finally, they reached the town with the club. Arthur parked the van next to it and turned off the music, then got out of the van and opened one of the back doors.
"Mystery, Lewis, wake up. We arrived."
Charlie McCarthey: Waking up took a few moments. The ghost didn't seem wholly aware of anything until he was standing out of the van and stretching. Lewis yawned lazily, and finally blinked open his eyes to see where they--
"You have got to be kidding me." He deadpanned, staring up at the caustic, neon font blazing over the little club.
"This place!? Seriously?!" He moaned, actually taking a step back. Vivi looked at him like he was crazy, and when he saw Artie taking a step toward it he grabbed his wrist and held him back.
"You can't go in there!"
Visions--memories of that Arthur, Arthur the poledancer flashed through his mind.
Yoshi Raven: Arthur, who had no idea of that alternate version of himself, was looking at Lewis.
"Eh? Why? Lewis, the owner needs our help, we have to enter the club! What´s wrong with it? Well ok, they have strippers and more and it´s mostly for gay men but that shouldn´t bother us. We´re not here for fun. Come on, let go of me."
Charlie McCarthey: Lew only pulled a pleading face, but his hand slipped from Arthur's wrist at his command. "Maaan..." He groaned under his breath, reluctantly following the rest of the gang into the club.
"Of all the places in the world, it had to be this one." He grumbled, remembering all the worry 'that' Arthur had put through him, how unstable his life seemed.
Lewis entered the joint with a mildly annoyed, agitated and decidedly negative aura.
Proably not the best idea with a poltergiest hanging around.
Yoshi Raven: Arthur just looked at Lewis, then at Vivi but she looked just as confused as him. He´d ask about this place later.
The club looked just like Lewis had seen it. Men sitting or standing everywhere, talking, drinking, some were smoking and music was playing. No one was dancing at the pole, at least. The gang was just a few seconds in that club and they already saw the bartender chasing a few floating drinks. He was able to grab and give them to the customers. Luckily, they didn´t see this and walked away to their table. The bartender sighed and sat down on a chair, his hands supporting his head. The guy looked slightly grumpy.
Charlie McCarthey: Vivi introduced the gang, and Lewis managed to settle his nerves long enough to flash the bartender a reassuring smile. With the mood Lew was in right now, it didn't matter if things got 'ugly.' He'd be more than happy to take out his emotions on low level ghost, if it ever came to that. Lewis kept his arms crossed and stood behind Arthur, shooting a few dark and worried looks toward the stage every so often.
Mystery put his nose to the ground and snuffled around, weaving inbetween tables and chairs as he let the humans do their talking. He had a better way of finding spirits, after all!
Yoshi Raven: The bartender, his name was Jeremy and he was the owner, too, was relieved to see the gang and told them everything that had happened.
"... floating glasses, plates fell down or the lights flickered - none of this is dangerous but the guests slowly notice something is wrong. If they stay away, I can close this club but I don´t want to! I worked for a very, very long time to give these people a place where they can relax so please. Whatever is causing this, make it go away."
"Don´t worry, we´ll solve this case. Just take care of the guests and let us do the rest." Arthur smiled at him. This would be an easy case, the ghost was not dangerous and just playing pranks.
"Alright, let´s search for the ghost."
Charlie McCarthey: "Artie, you stay here and check the main room. Lew, since you seem so invested in the stage area, why don't you go check there? Mystery's already off--he'll come get one of us if he finds anything." Viv made a mental check list of where she sent her boys, "And I'll check the kitchen and the basement. Let's see if we can convince this ghost to go haunt somewhere else--so be open, friendly and safe!" She reminded cheerfully.
Lewis grumbled and headed off--his height alone made the people move out of his way, to say nothing of the slightly perturbed look he had, and the fact he was wearing sun glasses inside.
Yoshi Raven: "Got it. See you!" Arthur immediately started looking around for signs of ghost activity. He slowly made his way through the crowd, stopping here and there but there were no floating glasses or flickering lights. As if the ghost was hiding, now that Lewis and Mystery where here. They´d find him anyway.
Most of the guys here were much taller than him - but he was short, anyway and only a few were as tall as Lewis. Just minutes after he had started looking for the ghost, he noticed that some of the guys were looking at him. Most of them just because he was moving through the whole room but some - some had that flirty, no, predatory look in their eyes. He wasn´t afraid, though. If someone would try anything, it wasn´t Arthur that would be in trouble then.
Charlie McCarthey: Lewis vanished behind the curtain to the backstage with barely a sound, keeping an absentminded pull on the bond. It wasn't like he expected anything happen, from the ghost or Arthur or otherwise, but being in this...place...already had Lewis on edge.
He knew his fears were illogical and it was just a timeline, but, damn. He won't ever forget that Arthur he met.
It's because of these thoughts that Lewis forgets to keep a tab on his Arthur. He doesn't notice the fleet strings of negative emotions Art was giving off.
Yoshi Raven: After walking around for 20 minutes, he sat down at the bar and got a drink from Jeremy. He took a sip then turned to look over the room. Maybe he could see something from far away. There was nothing happening for a long time besides these looks from some guys that slowly made him nervous, but then there was a light flickering at the other side of the room. Arthur observed it, not noticing the two guys that were coming closer.

Novel Score
It's sometime around the beginning of a month, which apparently means these days that it's time for me to do a roundup post of the books I read in the preceding month--in this case, January 2024. Once again have been keeping on top of it during the month which helps me actually produce it in a timely manner. Because I started this back in November/December, doing monthly book posts isn't a New Year's resolution, unless the resolution was just "keep doing it". I'm keeping doing it.
Book list under the cut, book-related ramblings may include spoilers for Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan series, Martha Wells's Murderbot series, Kelly Meding's Dreg City series, and maybe others. You have been warned.
Ashok Banker: Siege of Mithila, completed January 6
As mentioned previously, I am rapidly running out of books by male "diversity" slot authors in my collection. I read the first Ashok Banker book, Prince of Ayodhya, a few years earlier, and was kind of meh on it, so I wasn't sure if I would continue. But I did pick up the other one as a library discard (ah, the days when I got books and CDs as library discards…back when they used to have a sale rack in the local branch all the time, instead of saving them up for periodic bulk sales…) so I hadn't entirely given up on it. So, in not quite desperation, I turned to Siege of Mithila as my next diversity read.
The series is apparently a retelling of the Ramayana, which is some kind of important epic in India, though I can't judge if it's like "the Bible" or "King Arthur" or "The Iliad" or what, but I assume it's somewhere on that level, at least among certain cultures. My brief skimming of the Wikipedia article on the Ramayana implies that Banker is following the story pretty closely, which means that sometimes it gets a little weird plotwise, but is perhaps more revealing culturally or something. And sometimes it's a wee bit problematic…like the way that the main adversary for the first two books is Ravana, lord of the Asuras (basically demons), who rules over the southern island kingdom of Lanka (like…"Sri Lanka"?), which is populated entirely by Asuras. Which is about like if there was a fantasy series set in England where they had to fight evil demons from the western island kingdom of Eire or something. (Wait…do they have those?) One wonders if this series (or the original Ramayana) are quite as popular in Sri Lanka, then…
Anyway, we mostly follow Rama, the titular Prince of Ayodhya from the first book, and his half-brother Lakshman, but a lot of this book is also set back in the palace in Ayodhya following Rama's father the Maharaja, his three wives, and the evil (and hunchbacked--oh look, it's equating deformity with wickedness, that's awesome) witch Manthara as she and Ravana try to sabotage the kingdom from within. Rama and Lakshman end up going to Mithila instead of back to Ayodhya, and foiling a big Asura attack on the city, which comes unbelievably close to the end of the book and is not quite solved by deus ex machina, but doesn't feel particularly satisfying.
One element of the series is that some of the characters are just like ridiculously powerful sages who were like "I've been meditating for 5000 years so I'm really wise and can do anything, though I guess I should let Rama solve a few things on his own to gain some of his own wisdom". Not that this is all that different from, say, Gandalf or Merlin, of course... There are also some odd storytelling choices, like switching to a different set of characters just at a dramatic point in a different storyline, or, in one major side-quest, just skipping the ending of it and coming back to it a couple of chapters later in flashbacks. Also, one character is given important advice by a ghost which he then completely ignores (luckily other people overrule him, but it bugged me).
The book kind of feels like the second book of a trilogy, but not quite, which makes sense because apparently there are eight other books in the series, so it's not just about fighting Ravana and the Asuras. I'm on the bubble about the series, as you may have gathered, so I don't know offhand if I'll be going on.
T. Kingfisher: Clockwork Boys, completed January 9
I paced myself going through Siege of Mithila, taking seven days for it (I started on December 31st to get a little head start), so it put me a bit behind on my Goodreads challenge (100 books for the year, again). This means, time to read some shorter things! I haven't read any T. Kingfisher yet (though I have read, like, the webcomic "Digger" under her real name, Ursula Vernon, if nothing else), so I let my wife, who has read a lot of them, suggest which one I should start with, and this was the one she chose (at the time; it may have been a couple of years ago). We have it as an ebook from Kobo, which sometimes makes it a little hard to tell how long the book actually is in pages, but Goodreads claimed it was under 300 pages, so it seemed a possible three-day read.
I was, I guess, vaguely expecting a steampunk story involving two boys who were made of clockwork or something, but apparently it's more straight fantasy (not too similar to the Ramayana was far as I can tell, though, which is good because I like consecutive reads to vary in genre if at all possible) where the Clockwork Boys are the bad guys. Also, apparently this is the first of a duology, a "long book split in two" duology as opposed to "book and a sequel featuring the same characters" duology.
The characters seem somewhat interesting, though I'm not sure I'm 100% won over. Sir Caliban for some reason reminds me of both Sanderson's Kaladin and Bujold's Cazaril, but maybe it's just the similarity of names enhancing certain similarities of character. And the demons also made me think of Bujold's Penric books. Maybe the tone is a little light for me on this one. We've got the second one as an ebook too, so I'll finish it off at some point and then maybe take a look at Nettle & Bone or something.
Kelly Meding: The Night Before Dead, completed January 12
As I may have also mentioned previously, I've tried a whole lot of urban fantasy series. Many of them, my wife has enjoyed more than I have, and is all caught up on them, but most of those I'm only a few books in. (I've given up on relatively few--Jennifer Estep and Jess Haines, among others.) For whatever reason, my wife didn't like the first book in Kelly Meding's "Dreg City" series, Three Days To Dead, and this time, to be actually clever about it, I decided to read the book myself and decide if I wanted to continue on in the series before it went out of print. As it turned out, I did like the first book, and I kept reading it on my own. When the series got dropped by the publisher after four books, I even went and bought the last two books (self-published, probably print on demand) to finish the series.
So this is the last one, which is supposed to wrap up the main conflict. Our main character, Evy Stone, started out the series waking up after death in a newly-vacated body; she was part of a group that worked to deal with paranormal threats. This world has beast-form shapeshifters named "Theria", vampires, and lots of types of fey--mostly pretty usual when it comes to urban fantasy--and their existence is unknown to world at large, etc.
Thie book does seem to wrap things up well enough, at least for the main characters, though it's hard to say if all the resolutions are satisfying. Still, it was enjoyable enough. She does have a couple of other, shorter series which I can try next, since we do actually own them. (And maybe some stuff under a different name?)
Lois McMaster Bujold: Brothers In Arms, completed January 15
Next (chronologically) in the reread order, this is the one where Miles goes to Earth and discovers the existence of his clone-brother Mark (spoilers). It starts up with a level of frustration--why does Miles have to stay at the embassy, and why aren't his mercenaries getting paid?--but things mostly work out in the end. Ivan shows up again (by authorial fiat--it's a bit too much of a coincidence, really), we meet recurring character Duv Galeni, and of course Mark, as mentioned already. It's not a particular favourite, but it's pretty good. And without it, how would we get Mirror Dance, and thus Memory?
I feel like I should be able to say more about it, but I've already talked about the Vorkosigan series a lot in previous posts, and, like I said, it's not a particular favourite. I guess I could mention how the first time through the series I read them in publication order, and so this was before The Vor Game and Cetaganda… Also, although we don't see much of Earth outside of London, we do get a good look at the gigantic dikes being used to hold back the ocean, because in the intervening mumble-mumble centuries the sea levels have risen. So presumably the icecaps have melted or something, though it doesn't seem like the Gulf Stream has shut down or anything, so maybe they have managed to mitigate things somewhat. An interesting view of future Earth, anyway, without going too overboard on covering the vast majority of the planet not relevant to our immediate plot.
Seth Dickinson: The Traitor Baru Cormorant, completed January 20
Taking another book from my list of authors to try (currently stored on my pool table); I picked this one because apparently the author has a new book coming out, and I do see people talking about the character from time to time, so clearly this is a book/series that has had some staying power and cultural impact, as opposed to something obscure that apparently sank without a trace. But this is a book that my wife tried, and either didn't finish or didn't want to continue the series.
And, having finished it, I can see why. I wouldn't say that it's a bad book…but I didn't, in the end, like it. I read it all the way to the end, and I've decided I'll leave it there and not try to continue the series. And probably I won't look for other books by Dickinson either. Like Ian McDonald's Desolation Road, which I read last year, I felt, as I was reading it, that this was a book I would have liked a lot better when I was younger, but these days it just doesn't do it for me.
It has the feeling of fantasy, in that it's set in a different world from our own, and there is none of the futuristic technology that would explain this as being a colony world…but there is also little or nothing in the way of magic. A little alchemy, maybe, but I don't know that it's out of line with what you could achieve with actual drugs. No wizards, and I don't think there were supernatural creatures either. But it's fantasy-coded, and maybe there's some minor thing I'm forgetting. It's not about magic, though. It's really about colonialism, and what happens when you're sucked into the colonizer's system so far that you think that the only way to help your people is by going along with that system. And Baru Cormorant is somewhat autistic-coded, perhaps--not only is she a savant, but she seems to have trouble figuring out the motives and feelings of others. Puts too much confidence in the ability to explain everything using economics (the character and possibly also the author, quite frankly), in a way which reminds me mostly of Dave Sim's deconstruction of faith and fantasy in Cerebus: Church And State. Not sure if it counts as grimdark, but it feels like the honorable are punished for their naivety like in "A Song of Ice And Fire". I lost sympathy for the main character partway through, and never got much for anyone else either. One character I liked and hoped to see more of was (gratuitously?) killed in the middle of the book. I was forewarned of the existence of a plot twist at the end of the book, and when it came, although I wasn't completely surprised, I was disappointed, and I didn't feel that it worked.
So, yeah. Your mileage may vary, but this book did not win me over.
Charles Stross: The Annihilation Score, completed January 25
I wanted something a bit more light-hearted after the previous book, but not, apparently, too much so. Charles Stross's "Laundry Files" series is set against a backdrop of cosmic horror and the looming end of the world, but also of British governmental bureaucracy, out of which he can usually pull of a fair amount of humour, as well as humanity. The main protagonist of the series is Bob Howard (named in honour of Robert E. Howard, inventor of Conan and friend of Lovecraft), computational demonologist, and the books in turn have paid tribute to a lot of different sources--James Bond, vampires, American evangelical megachurches, and--in this book--superheroes. But also, in this book, Bob is not our narrator; instead, we get his wife, Mo, in the fallout of a scene in the previous book (which we get from her POV here) with dire implications for their relationship…which has always been kind of a three-way between Bob, Mo, and Mo's soul-eating sentient violin, and this triangle has now come to a crisis. Plus there's superheroes.
Stross notes in the introduction that he never really read American superhero comics, so he had to pick a few brains about them, but the book really isn't about American superheroes either; he references the British superhero anthology series "Temps" (which I never did manage to read, since I only managed to find the second book, but now I feel like I should check out) as contrasted with the "Wild Cards" series.
All in all it's pretty decent, with lots of witty read-aloud bits, but the pacing is odd; there's a lot of plotlines, and some of them don't seem to progress for a long time. Some of them turn out to be red herrings, I guess, but overall it doesn't gel as well as it could. We don't see much of Bob (which makes sense since this isn't his book), though Mo is a perfectly fine protagonist. I'll be fine going back to Bob for the next book. If I can ever find it.
See, apparently this is the last book in the series I own right now, and probably the next one, The Nightmare Stacks, came and went while I was behind on reading it, and now it's out of print (and possibly never had a mass-market release at all, which is still my preferred format) and seems like it'll be hard to find in any physical format. I mean, I went on a site which allows you to search indie and second-hand bookstores, and the title didn't even come up on search. I have long been resisting switching wholeheartedly over to ebooks (a transition my wife has already made), but I can see that at some point I may have to get used to the fact that ebooks are just replacing mass-market paperbacks for the cheap release format. (I still can't manage to bring myself to spend as much as $8, let alone $12 or more, for an ebook, though. Like…what am I paying for? The publishing costs are minuscule compared to physical copies, and I expect that saving to be passed on to me. I guess I don't know if the extra is being passed on to the author in a non-self-published situation, but given our current corporate hellscape I'm gonna say probably not. Note: if you think this makes me a horrible person who hates writers to make money, please remember that I am married to a writer who I would love to make enough money that I don't have to work, but the publishing industry is horrible and they're the ones that actually have the capability to allow writers to make enough money to make a living, and they're not doing it, so I don't know what to tell you. I've bought thousands of books in my life, even if I don't go out of my way to buy the most expensive ones, because that's a good way to go broke. Get off my back, person I made up for this parenthetical aside.)
Martha Wells: System Collapse, completed January 28
I may be the last person in my house to have read Murderbot. My wife had already read some of Martha Wells earlier books (Raksura series, I want to say) before she read the Murderbot novells, and she loved them and read them to/got our kids to read them too. I eventually scheduled one in (novellas are good when I'm behind on my Goodreads challenge) and…it was okay, I guess? And I kept reading them because, well, more novellas. Last year I read the first novel-length story, Network Effect, and I liked it somewhat better than the novellas, for whatever reason.
I had been putting off the latest one for a little while, though, partly because of my Vorkosigan reread--I generally don't like books that are too close in genre too close together, and they're both kinda space opera-ish, though quite different kinds (Murderbot's future is more corporate-dominated), but next up I'm taking a break for a Dick Francis reread, so I thought I might as well put it in now. Though I've got to say that, since we have it as a physical hardcover as opposed to the digital novella ebooks, I'm really not a big fan of the texture of the dust jacket. Like, it is physically unpleasant to touch, being just a little bit rough. But not as bad as some I'd run across in the past few years, so I don't have to, like, take off the dust jacket to read it.
In the end I didn't like it as well as Network Effect, though I did like the middle bit where Murderbot becomes a Youtube influencer. The early part of the book, Murderbot is in a bit of a depressive state and not fun to read, like the first part of "Order of The Phoenix" or something. I guess if a character is too hypercompetent then nothing challenges them, but I wasn't a big fan of the emotional arc.
Dick Francis: Forfeit, completed January 31
I remember precisely where I was when I first heard of Dick Francis. See, I went to this convention in Edmonton in the summer of 1989, "ConText '89". It was an important convention--a reader-oriented rather than media-dominated SF/Fantasy convention, for one thing, and also it resulted in the formation of the first SF/Fantasy writer's organization in Canada, currently named SF Canada. Oh, and also, I met a cute girl there (Nicole, a YA author guest from northern Alberta), started dating, fell in love, got married, had three kids, and we're still married today.
I also saw this posting for a writing course out at a place called the Black Cat Guest Ranch, in the Rockies near Hinton, and decided to go. There I met Candas Jane Dorsey (who was the instructor for the course) and several other writers, and we later formed a writers' group called The Cult of Pain which is still going to this day. Anyway, I went out for a second course there, with Nicole coming along this time (though we may not have technically been dating and didn't share a room)--I think it was in mid-February sometime--and one evening we were all hanging out in the outdoor hot tub, watching snowflakes melt over our heads, and talking about books. And Candas and Nicole started rhapsodizing about this guy named Dick Francis. I said, "Who?" And they both told me I had to go read him, like, right away.
Dick Francis, apparently, was a former steeplechase jockey turned mystery/thriller writer. Now, mysteries and thrillers were not really my thing--I was into the SF & fantasy--but I supposed I was willing to try it. I was in university and trying to read other stuff outside my comfort zone, like Thomas Hardy and The Brothers Karamazov and William S. Burroughs, so why not. Plus, I wanted my girlfriend to like me. And the first one I picked up was one that one of my roommates had lying around, called Forfeit. It was pretty decent, and I went on to others--Nicole had a copy of Nerve, and I soon started to pick up more--and eventually read almost all of them (a few proved elusive, but I tracked down a copy of Smokescreen not long ago…).
Every book was concerned in some way with horse racing, but there was a wide variety--sometimes the main character was a jockey, but sometimes that was just their side hustle, and they had another profession, or sometimes they did something else like train horses or transport horses, or paint pictures of horses, or they didn't do anything about horses but the romantic interest did… He covered a lot of different professions over his books, they were usually quite interesting, and his characters were always very well-drawn. After his wife Mary (apparently an uncredited frequent collaborator and researcher) died, there was a gap of a few years before he started writing them with his son Felix. I think I read all of those ones, but after he died and Felix started writing solo novels, I haven't really kept up on those ones.
Instead, a few years ago I decided I was going to reread all the books, in publication order, interspersed with my series rereads as I was already doing with Discworld and Star Trek books. Forfeit is his seventh published book…and when I went to look for it on my shelf, I discovered that I actually didn't own a copy, and probably never had. I had just borrowed it from my roommate, and then given it back (a rookie mistake). Was it in print? Of course not, don't be silly. I had managed to find a used copy of Smokescreen online, as I mentioned, but for Forfeit there was only more expensive trade paperbacks, or $8 ebooks. They didn't even have it at the library! Except, well, they did…but I'd have to interlibrary loan it. I went back on forth on which to try to do, and eventually went ILL, and it came in for me at the library on the 20th. So there, overpriced ebooks. (And person I made up for the earlier parenthetical aside.)
Dick Francis novels have turned to be pretty rereadable, because they're not primarily mysteries of the sort where you don't remember which of the suspects is guilty; they're mysteries where the main character has to figure out who's behind the crimes and then avoid getting killed by them. Some of it is competency porn as they use their special skills to solve problems. And some of it just because of the engaging characters, which are maybe not quite all the way there in the earlier books (the ones I've reread so far are still books from the 60s, so the female characters could be more nuanced). In Forfeit what I recalled from that first read (some 34 years ago) was that the main character was a sportswriter, it started with one of his colleagues killing himself, and his wife was disabled and bedridden. (And one exciting scene in the middle of the book in which spoilers.) Though it turned out I was conflating two suicide openings (Nerve also starts with one, a gunshot suicide on the first page, whereas Forfeit's is more falling out of a window), and the exciting scene is missing an element I was sure was there.
So that's eight books in one month, which is basically enough to keep up on my Goodreads challenge, but I also managed to squeeze in a couple more on the side track. First of all, there was my brother's book, Paths of Pollen, which came out last year; my mom went to the book launch in Toronto and brought back a signed copy for me. As one might expect, it talks about honeybees (and the time he was working on our stepfather's apiary), but covers a lot of pollen details I didn't know, about all the other bees, beetles, butterflies, insects, and other animals that also do pollination. It's a sobering look at how plants reproduce and how we're screwing it up in a lot of cases. (I hadn't realized before how much insects use pollen as food…somehow I thought they were nectar-eaters and they just picked up pollen because the plants forced them too, but I guess it makes sense that they also eat it.)
Then there was another one of the Love & Rockets ebook bundle that I've been going through. This volume, Esperanza, is around the latest stuff I read in the Love & Rockets Vol. 2 comics (which I have only read once or twice), so it's fairly unfamiliar to me. Despite it being named after Esperanza "Hopey" Glass, most of the book seems to revolve around Vivian, a.k.a. Frogmouth, a hot, buxom woman with an unfortunate voice, who both Maggie and Ray are lusting after, despite her problematic relationships with some violent criminals. Ray and Maggie do meet up again briefly; Maggie's working as an apartment superintendent, Hopey's working in a bar but trying to get into a teaching assistant job, surreal things happen with Izzy, Doyle's around as well, and we see brief glimpses of Maggie's sister Esther. It was interesting but I didn't find it altogether compelling.
With ten books for January, that means I'm really read up to 36.5 days into the year, or February 5th, so I'm a little bit ahead. I'll be taking advantage of this to start off February with a longer book, for my female diversity slot--Fonda Lee's Jade Legacy, to wrap up that series. More about that next month, of course…

I have this mystery skulls animated theroy
I could be wrong but
Thanks to the future
We see when Arthur held Lewis locket the picture in it changed right?
Soo I know when people died and became a ghost in stories (blame my childhood of being a fan of Casper the friendly ghost movies and cartoons as well as liking beetle juice movie/ cartoon as well as other ghost themed cartoons/anime/comics/anime/manga) the ghost doesn’t always have a correct memory of how they died until a living soul helps them piece together what really happened to them
Heck man it’s only now people realise that in times in great stress/ trauma most peoples don’t always remember what really went wrong or the memories end up being wrong or flawed (there have been studies)
What if Lewis hadn’t even dated Vivi yet; like he really loves/likes her but what if he never told her he liked her yet? Like the group are all friends and a great team but Lewis never told vivi that he liked her and Vivi seemed like she was more focused on studying the paranormal wasn’t interested in dating? She might of liked Lewis back maybe
But Lewis death wish not only made her forget his death but is way to easy for his death wish to keep making her forget Lewis altogether;; it’s a lot harder to make a person forget they were in a romantic relationship with;;
Also being as Arthur was possessed and apparently Arthur seems to something gets alot paranormal seems to get drawn to him alot but was the last thing Lewis saw was Arthur but in his mind he didn’t look at the green coming up Arthurs arm and half his face he just couldn’t understand why his best friend pushed him off the cliff so he figured Arthur wanted to date Vivi and wanted him out of the way (but Arthur wasn’t after vivi at all (I mean I’m a Lewvithir shipper but when Lewis went missing Arthur didn’t even try to date vivi and was trying to find him and get vivi to remember him the hold time; he himself being as he was possessed at the time has no idea Lewis was dead that’s why in hellbent and the beginning of the future he says Lewis name in shock surprise and doesn’t even fight him & just gives a shock look like he can’t believe Lewis is dead look) ) so Lewis may have forgotten that him and vivi never even dated but thinks they did because he liked her so much?
Also the fact the van belongs to Arthur and not Lewis means Arthur knew Lewis liked vivi and would let Lewis drive the van to try and impress vivi but vivi isn’t the type to be easily impressed just by being good at driving!
I also think but I’m not sure it’s just a guess but I feel like vivi’s coworker at comic / book shop she works at when not out studying the paranormal
Think her name is Chloe? I know she’s obsessed with the idea with having some undead/ demon boyfriend; I have this guess she was mucking around with some sort of summoning thing and woke up reverb that was in that cave who in turn started to possess Arthur because Arthur Lewis Vivi and even mystery didn’t break any wards while in the cave
Like just walking into a cave doesn’t normally get you possessed; because if that was the case all of them would of gotten possessed or mystery would of keep them from walking into that cave right?
I mean I think I herd somewhere that Chole wanted to join the mystery skulls team to find herself an undead/ demon husband/ boyfriend but Vivi said she was too young and also didnt think wanting to join the team for those reasons wasn’t a good idea being as the paranormal can be very unsafe
Just some thought I’d got running around my head atm but if any of these things are true
It would one explain why vivi keeps forgetting about Lewis
Two explain why Lewis locket picture changed to the hold mystery skulls team then to just him and vivi
And three Chole mucking around with dark arts/paranormal without a total clue how dangerous that is because you could summon something very nasty and ended up bringing about Reverb
It would mean maybe by accident Chole would be responsible for summoning Reverb evil that possessed Arthur and caused Lewis death!
I mean Chole having a hold lota green as her outfit and well reverb is well all green I believe the 2 are linked

My two cents on the Thetis is Derriere reincarnated theory
Written after chapter 79
Y'all, I hear you. I get where you're coming from. I want my girl back too.
But do you really think she would take a single order from Meliodas ever again in her newly aquired life?
When Mael uses the spell on her and Oslo, he states they will reborn with all their memories intact, so they may have the chance to enact their revenge on him, should they choose to.
As if former Ten Commandments Derriere would willingly put herself under the traitor that caused two Holy Wars and killed a shit ton of her comrades, two of them very close ones when he first left the Demon Clan. Now maybe she just does it for Elizabeth and doesn't give or take two shits from Meliodas, but frankly, I doubt it. It would be low-key hilarious, but no.
And if she kept her memories, why would she change her name?
Then the way she's introduced, with her chuckling and clearly knowing what's going on over in the fight when Elizabeth expresses her worry? I don't think we've seen Derriere laugh audibly once in the series (correct me please). That argument's a bit farfetched, I know.
It's not a secret that Nakaba has a terrific case of same face syndrome. Nasiens, Guinevere, and Gawain are all a blueprint of Diane's design. Now maybe there's a connection between Nasiens and them, maybe there's a reason they look so much alike and we just don't know it yet. And if it's only a plot device for later (I've had this idea for a while that Nasiens could pretend to be either of them at some point to fool Arthur and his knights). But tbh I think it's just same face syndrome.
It would kinda fuck if Thetis was Derriere, if only because she's one of the few entirely new characters with no connection to the prequel so far, and it feels kinda strange. But I think there are way better ways to pull her off, so I hope she isn't. I really doubt it's her.
Then again Guinevere is twelve and Jericho in love with Lancelot so I wouldn't put it beyond him lol.
#four knights of the apocalypse#nnt derriere#derriere is thetis?#4kota thetis#4kota theory#Nakaba violently swings between great writing and character design and that trash can full of drafts I haven't emptied since I was thirteen

How would they react to the new arrival ?
" Hi everybody. My name is Y/N and I am the head nurse around here. If you have any questions, you can ask them to me. I see here that two of you are transfers from St John's, so you'll be assigned to miss Harrison's department..However, I see here that mister Wendell Crumb has just been released from prison ? Who is mister Wendell Crumb ?"
A close cut man raises his hand with a slight smile.
" That would be me."
You smile back before checking something on your file.
" Fine. You'll be transferred to my department. However, I see here that you've got many names..May I ask who I am talking to ?"
Wendell Crumb suddely straightens up and stares right at you with a very unsettling smile.
" I'm Barry. Nice to meet you.."
You raise an eyebrow suspiciously before looking down at his file. Creepy smile. Judgy stare. Feminine stand..Yeah, definitely not Barry..
" I'm sorry, but in order for us to get along, honesty is the key..Now, could you please tell me who you really are ?"
The man's smile only widens as he congratulates you.
" Clever girl. I'm Patricia. Nice to meet you."
He then claps with both hands and you narrow your eyes, trying to figure the new patient out. He seems harmless enough, even though his file seems to suggest the contrary. A great pretender. After all the effort you had put in getting the patients to trust you, this one would surely bring chaos. You could already tell by just looking at him in the eyes: he wasn't here to get better.
You sigh before closing the file and signaling to the patient to follow you as Harrison enters. Wendell Crumb is almost too eager to follow you. You can feel his stare on you, as if he was sizing you up and down.
" The patients are eating, I suppose it is a good time to get acquainted with them and make some new friends. What do you think ?"
You smile and try to be nice to him, but he doesn't answer. He only huffs before looking away. You open the door to the cafeteria and feel the stare of all the slashers on you and the new arrival. Patricia seems to be doing a quick assessment of each slasher before finally landing on you.
" By what I heard, I thought I would be meeting fearless and bloodthirsty demons..But all I can see is a bunch of old-timers."
Your eyes widen in shock at his words and you can see some of the slashers tense. However, far from being intimidated, Kevin widely grins and seems to slouch slightly, taking another personality you guess.
" Hi guys ! I'm Hedwig ! I'm soooo excited to meet all of you ! Patricia said you were like us ! That's like, totally cool !"
To that, Freddy is the first to answer with a mocking smirk.
" Great. Another kid..Me who thought we would finally be enough to play poker. What a disappointment..Can he at least change his own grown-up diapers ?"
Suddenly, Hedwig's joyful expression shifts to a much serious one that glares daggers at Freddy.
" What did you say, steak face ?"
Oh oh. Freddy's expression darkens and he stands up to face Kevin that only arks an eyebrow at him, a silent challenge. One that Freddy is eager to respond to.
" What did you call me, baldie ?"
But, far from feeling intimidated, Kevin only stares down at him with a little smirk.
" You heard me, midget.."
You can feel the tension rising and put yourself between the two of them promptly.
" Hey ! That's enough ! Be nice ! And you.."
You turn towards Freddy with furrowed eyebrows, clearly displeased.
"..I told you to hold your tongue with them."
Freddy only humphs unhappily before getting out of your grip and glaring at Kevin that only grins defiantly at him.
" What ? That's it ? This is the infamous Freddy Krueger ? The bringer of nightmares and slayer of children ? I must admit that I am deeply disappointed.."
Patricia, she wants to rile him up. You quickly get another nurse to get Freddy to sit back down before he gives in to his violent impulses. You then glare at Kevin before taking him by the arm for him to follow you outside of the room.
" What are you trying to do exactly ?! Get killed ?!"
But, far from feeling guilty, Kevin's grin only widens as he stares directly back at you for several seconds, as if looking deep inside your soul..At the end, he pretends to be apologetic by raising his hands in surrender and finally giving some kind of explanation for his behavior.
" I'm sorry. I'm just feeling overwhelmed, garden variety issue..You understand. We mustn't let the bad seeds take roots, or we may end up with bad weed issues.."
At this, Pennywise that had followed you discreetly gets out of his hiding spot to growl menacingly at Kevin.
" Bad weed ?! Who are you calling bad weed, pal ?! I'll show you bad weed."
But one stern look from you, and Pennywise reconsiders. But, he is still glaring daggers at Kevin that only giggles maniacally while you get him back inside. However, he doesn't miss the way you instinctively hold on to the pendent hanging around your neck..What a strange necklace..? He turns his head towards the slashers that all seem on edge now, like a pack of wolves ready to attack. However, it's even worse when he suddenly takes you by the shoulders to smell you behind your ear, his gaze still fixed on the gang that seems ready to jump into action at any moment..Even Pennywise doesn't notice that he is munching on his spoon instead 9f his actual food. You try to get out of his grip, but he only tightens his grip on you as a response.
" What ? Are you all her lapdogs now ? I see the appeal..But still, to think she managed to have you all around her little finger..The strongest men on Earth, all submitting to that small bite."
As if to prove his point, he starts nibbling on the top of your ear, waiting for a reaction. However, before anyone could do anything, Kevin feels something piercing his skin and turns around to see a smirking Five with a needle in his hand.
" Nighty night."
Kevin collapses and you quickly kneel by his side to take his pulse. Thankfully, he's alive and you ask some nurses to bring him back to his room. You had agreed with the hospital not to use the collars unless it was a case of extreme emergency, looks like this could be one..
" Thank you, Five. But, dont use medical supplies without my permission again, okay ?"
He doesn't lose his smile before replying casually, hands in his pockets.
" Can't promise anything.."
The slashers are still staring at Kevin that is dragged out of the room. It takes you a while to reassure them that you're fine, even longer to convince yourself. However, Five seems even more suspicious than usual, he seems to be eager to return to his bedroom, and he was late for lunch..But, you don't have the time to worry about him. You finally manage to get them all to return to their bedrooms and walk inside your own. There, you let the mask fall and collapse on your bed, burying your face in a nearby pillow in order to muffle your tears and screams. Each time, you try to contain your own fear for the safety of the patients and yourself, but just with one touch, this new individual had made all of your walls crumble. However, you have to get it together, you couldn't let the other patients see you like this..You get up and cough a bit before cleaning yourself up. You then open the door, not expecting all the patients tumbling inside as they were listening in..You sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose.
" What did I say about listening on doors ?"
They all stand up and look at everything but your face or simply try to justify themselves.
" Look, hon..We were only worried..Kinda ?"
Freddy tries to explain, but you take a big inspiration before stepping out. This is just what you needed: serial killers worrying about you.
" It's the hour of your medication. How about Michael and Five come to help me in the kitchen while you wait in the your rooms ?"
You finally decide to ignore Freddy and are surprised when Arthur takes you gently by the arm so you can look up at them.
"Hey, don't shut us down. Freddy is right, we were only worried."
You eyes soften at their genuine concern, but you quickly shake the feeling away. You had faced far worse, but this patient scared you the most..because he had attacked you as if he already knew, as if he knew who you were before you even introduced yourself. You will have to keep a close eye on that one, that's for sure. Fortunately, the patients hadn't reacted too extremely, or it would have turned bad, very very bad..You don't know why the hospital had suddenly decided to add another patient, but one thing is for sure, this new patient wasn't transferred here, he was sent here with a purpose. Now, your goal is to discover whatever purpose that is. You are on your way to his room when you realize something..You hadn't seen Jason all morning. He wasn't there for lunch either. You feel cold sweat running down your back when you suddenly hear some fighting noises. You run in the direction of the sounds and are shocked to see Jason, Five and, surprisingly, Klaus in Kevin's room. You don't have the time to ask what the last one is here that Jason takes Kevin by his shirt and throws him through the window.
You look at Five for an explanation, but he doesn't look at you and looks at the broken window instead.
" Did he just..?"
" Yup. He just did.."
Klaus confirms before turning towards you with a small awkward smile.
" Can someone please explain to me why a civilian is here and why Jason just threw Kevin out of the damn window ?!"
You exclaim and for once, Five is speechless and it's his brother that decides to step up to explain the situation to you.
" Hi. I'm Klaus, Five's older brother and I was about to help him escape until we heard noises of a fight outside. We got out and saw a bold man talking and fighting our dear sweet Jason that threw said man flying through the window. Literally."
Your eyes widen at the news of his planned escape and then look at Five with a confused frown. The idea of escaping wasn't what surprised you the most, but why would he want to leave now ? However, before you could ask, Jason, who is clearly upset, pushes right past you with angry groans and an uneven breathing. You give a stern look at Five, clearly signifying that this discussion isn't over before running after Jason before he could murder Kevin. When you get out, you see that all of the slashers had encircled Kevin that seems angrier than ever.
" I'll kill you all !"
He shouts, but Freddy only cackles while leaning against the wall, with the sunglasses you had given him sitting on his nose, and Pennywise that has a bowl of popcorn in his hands.
" Come on, Jason ! We'll enjoy the massacre..There are no witnesses. Just show that clown who's the boss ! No offense.."
He quickly adds at the end to Pennywise that only smirks before fist-bumping him.
" None taken."
You run to stand between the two huge men that don't seem to even notice you. You look at Michael for help, but he only crosses his arms, clearly implying that he wouldn't interfere. Great..You think before turning towards the devil you know, your hands outstretched towards him.
" Stop, Jason. Please. This is not you. Whatever he told you, it is not worth this. You will be punished, severely. They will maybe not kill you, but they will lock you away, somewhere nobody will ever find you again.."
Jason seems to finally snap out of it and you smile when he takes your hand and yanks you forward with his supernatural strength. You chuckle, relieved while he hugs you. But then, you hear a loud sound behind you and turn around swiftly to see..Brahms ?! Brahms just took Kevin by the throat to crash the back of his head against the concrete and his hands are now around his throat, squeezing painfully tight. You run towards them and try to get Brahms to let go, but he only tightens his grip on him as you yell.
" Let go, Brahms ! What are you doing ?! I said let go !"
But he doesn't listen to you, even worse, he gives you a hard blow to the stomach with his elbow that knocks all air out of your lungs. However, you still find the strength to get up and this is when Brahms finally shouts furiously.
" He took my doll !"
You are surprised how he managed to form a whole sentence without stammering and also horrified by the news. Brahms' doll is Brahms' most precious possession, no wonder he wants to kill Kevin. But then, Kevin laughs and spits blood on Brahms' mask.
" Idiot. You kill me, you won't get the doll and they'll throw you in the darkest deepest hole they can find.."
You know that he is telling the truth and look at Brahms that doesn't seem to be willing to stop. You take a big breath before finally taking out the pendent they had offered you. You hold it tightly in your hand before ordering Brahms to stop.
" Stop, Brahms ! Let him go ! Now !"
Suddenly, as if under some kind of transe, Brahms straightens up and finally releases Kevin. Brahms then slowly turns towards you and walks to you until he is barely a few inches away from you and leans in so close you can hear his hectic breathing. You almost fear for your life and hold on to the pendent even tighter.
However, he only humphs and walks away. You look up and, for once, see the disappointment in the different slashers' eyes. They all saw what happened, what you used to control Brahms.
" I..I didn't want to.."
But it's too late, the damage is done. The Joker, that had stayed silent so far, suddenly bursts our laughing, but it doesn't quite reach his eyes as he tells you bitterly.
" You know why Jason attacked Kevin ? Because he said that you were using us..Looks like he wasn't so wrong after all.."
He walks past you, not even giving you a second glance. You turn towards the rest of the slashers that seem either angry or even fearful of you.
" P..Penny..?"
You try to extend your hand towards Penny that is eyeing you warily and who growls warningly at you when your hand is too close. Suddenly, a hand snatches yours to yank you backwards.
" Back off, lady !"
Pennywise cautions you, his eyes glowing yellow in the dark. However, suddenly, some armed forces enter the yard and get out tazers to restrain the patients. You see one of the guards tackle Pennywise to the ground. To your horror, Penny bites the guard's shoulder that screams loudly in pain. Before you could say anything, another guard shoots some tranquilizers at the Penny that collapses.
" No..No !"
You run towards Penny and cradle his face with tears in your eyes. It wasn't supposed to go this way. What had gone wrong ? You look up at Pennywise that is now restrained and muzzled. He tries to break free to reach Penny, but the guards won't let him.
" Pennywise..I'm..I'm so s.."
But he glares at you and cuts you off harshly.
" Nah. Save your breath, princess.."
Pennywise says while eyeing you up and down with new-found disdain, even Freddy is not smiling anymore. The slashers are brought back inside with shackles and you feel your lower lip quivering. You didn't want to use the pendent, but he was going to kill Kevin and..You look back to see that Kevin is smiling. He even dares giggles when some guards come to take him away.
" Rejoice ! You are of the worthy ! You are broken !"
You don't understand and frown in confusion, but he doesn't add anything. You sigh deeply before getting back inside as well, you had to make it up to them..somehow.
" You really think it's a good idea ? We aren't even sure that Kevin will be able to accomplish his mission."
But the woman, far from being worried, only puffs out a cloud of smoke and replies with a confident smile.
" Believe me, John. It will work..Soon, we'll have the slashers at our mercy. They'll be our little tin soldiers. And nothing will be able to stop us, brother.."

Just your heartbeat
Arthur Pendragon NNT x Doctor!femS/O
Warnings: None
Author’s note: This is my first post here, and i don’t think I will post much because i don’t have the imagination to make it a hobby, but my asks will be open if someone wants to send me a request or something. Just keep in mind I will mostly do it slowly! Headcanons or scenarios are valid!
Arthur is one of my biggest husbandos but he doesn’t get the same attention as the rest of the characters, so I just felt the necessity of publishing this one shot I imagined, hoping that my fellow Arthur stans like it! English isn’t my first language so I’m sorry if there are some errors. Feedback would be great!
Word count: 1515
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Life isn't easy when your castle, and practically the whole city, is being occupied by the demon clan. The Camelot population was forced to live in an underground bunker while the Holy War happens in Britannia, and as their King, Arthur dedicates his time in doing surveillance rounds, accompanied by Cath, Nanashi, and some of his knights.
He always had incredible abilities in combat, specially with swords, thanks to Merlin's training. However, when this situacion started he couldn't do much except to ask his comrades for help so the number of demons around the city wouldn't ascend. I'm saying at first, because thanks to the passing of time and Nanashi's experience, now he can take out a good bunch of demons all by himself without breaking a sweat.
Or at least the majority of times.
Because of his impulssive nature, acheing for adventures and new challenges, the young King ended up today more bruised than expected.
"King Arthur, you're back!" - Announced one of the villagers who were standing next to the doors which led to one of the main rooms in the underground city. More villagers gathered around the doors until they were completely opened - "Did you have any problems? It's been a while since we saw you looking like that"
Arthur's clothes were dirtier than usual, with some tears here and there. You could even see some small bruises in his face, but nothing big enough to worry at first sight.
"Don't worry! I may have been a little bit careless, but I'm fine, and I also could defeat some dozens of demons as usual!" - Replied the young King with his cheerful and enthusiastic self, puffing up his chest in a prideful way. At least until a sudden pain made him stop and cough while taking his hand to his chest, leaving the people watching him concerned
"I will go get some of the leftovers from lunch, please don't overwork yourself" - Said one of the women while she returned to the dining room along some more.
"You should get checked by (Y/N), just to be sure that you don't have mayor injuries".
Arthur couldn't help being nervous when he heard (Y/N)'s name. He was a carefree and adventurous boy, working on his strengh since he got separated from the seven deadly sins to protect his people; but he still had weaknesses, and (Y/N) was one of them.
How could he not fall in love with her? She was sweet, helpful and loved by the town. He had visited her more than once and her voice alone made him feel butterflies. With the passing of time it became more difficult to see her, He could barely hide his feelings and that embarrased him even more.
"I insist, it is nothing! I'm sure the pain will fade away the moment I rest-" - His excuses were interrumpted by Nanashi, who got closer to check him with a look
"It wouldn't hurt you doing a little check up. Besides, it's not only for your wellness, it's also for Camelot's people since they want to see you healthy. You are their protector after all"
Arthur couldn't do much besides nodding while scratching his head and look at the ground; knowing well that it wouldnt matter whatever he had to say, because they would keep insisting until they were sure that their King was in full condition
"Well, if that majes you happy, I'll go right now..." - He looked up as the villagers started to nod and continued with their chores. Once the crowd dissipated he walked to the nearest table so he could put down the basket where Cath was, and then he set course to (Y/N)'s room. In front of it, the King took a deep breath to gather the courage and knocked on the door
“Come in!” – A cheerful voice spoke from inside. (Y/N) kept looking to the door from her seat across the room, until Arthur appeared – “Your Majesty! It’s been a while since the last time you came here, did something go wrong?” – She stood up and bowed to greet him.
Arthur closed the door behind him, smiling gently at her – “I told you to call me Arthur, we know each other well. And, I just got slightly hit while patrolling, but they forced me to visit you” – He ended with a nervous smile – “I didn’t mean to bother you!”
(Y/N) listened carefully and made a gesture with her hand, inviting him to take a seat on the bed so she could observe him well.
“You don’t bother, it’s my work to make sure nobody is ill or hurt after all” – Arthur took off his sword so he could sit comfortably, waiting until (Y/N) got closer to his face – “Hmm, just some bruises and cuts, as usual, they will heal fast” – (Y/N) looked into his eyes, smiling relieved, making it imposible for Arthur to hide the sudden blush on his face. Once done, she stepped back.
“I already told them that it was nothing to worry about, but it’s nice to confirm it”
“However, your clothes show signs of combat. Are you sure it doesn’t hurt in any other place?”
“I’ve only felt a sudden pain in my chest” – He said while pointing at himself, right where he felt it – “But I don’t think it’s really important”.
“I see… I can’t allow myself to let you go without being completely sure you are alright, so please, take off your shirt so I can auscultate you” – And with that said, (Y/N) turned around so she could get her stethoscope.
Arthur followed her words and left his clothes to the side embarrased, preparing himself for (Y/N)’s next move. What he didn’t know was that (Y/N) was doing the exact same thing, and she was thankful of having turned her back on Arthur so he couldn’t see her face. After all, she couldn’t deny she had a little crush on the young King.
Once prepared, (Y/N) turned around and went back to sit next to Arthur, looking at his chest.
“You do have a bruise where you pointed some seconds ago” – She adjusted the stethoscope in her ears, pressing the metalic end on Arthur’s back, causing him to shiver at the sudden cold – “Take a deep breath please”
While (Y/N) listened carefully pressing on his back, Arthur looked to the wall in front of him. His only mission right now was avoinding getting nervous again, but (Y/N)’s closeness and the intrusive thoughts which claimed that (Y/N) had indeed noticed his blush a few minutes ago made it difficult for him. The more he tried to avoid those thoughts, the more he realized he was in love with her. Just a few seconds later he felt the metal on his chest, fearing the worst.
His fast heartbeat didn’t go unnoticed. (Y/N) frowned a little. Could it be because he just came back of fighting? Maybe, but his calm behaviour said otherwise.
Worried, (Y/N) stayed a few more seconds listening to his heart, to make sure her ears weren’t fooling her, until she got up, pulled away and took off her stethoscope – “Your lungs are alright, but there’s something worrying me, your heart is beating faster than it should… that could mean you have an internal wound…”
Yup, she got him. At least she didn’t think about the reason being him crushing on her. Besides, (Y/N) supossed that being Arthur a King, there wasn’t any hope for her, so she simply thought that there was an unknown problem with him.
“Like I said, they’re just some bruises” – Arthur took his clothes and dressed quickly, getting up and looking at (Y/N) – “Thanks to you I even feel better! I’ll go right now to inform the people there is nothing to worry about” – He walked to the door and before he could open it (Y/N)’s voice made him stop and turn around slightly
“Even so, come back in a while! I want to be sure it really isn’t anything dangerous”
Arthur could feel her concern in her words, adding fuel to his feelings
“Later? Even if I feel alright?” – (Y/N) nodded, laughing at Arthur’s stubborness.
“Even if you feel alright. And if you don’t come back, I will search for you”
Arthur sighed softly with a smile- “In that case I will be back in some hours so you don’t have to worry more than necessary, and you will see that I’m as well as always!” – Laughing he opened the door and said goodbye until he was out of the room.
Another blush appeared again in his cheeks thinking about what he agreed to do. Coming back? Knowing him, he will be caught again, and he can’t make excuses forever. He better learn to relax himself or he would end up having to confess his feelings without being prepared.
In her room, (Y/N) sat again on her chair leaning on the table with a goofy grin, wishing that those heartbeats where for her; and without knowing (at least for now) that indeed, it was like that.

Marie Anne Cain Part 1: Trial by Fire
Marie Anne Cain had been created for one purpose.
She was created as a backup plan in case her older sister Cassandra Cain fails her given task of guarding the Al-Ghuls.
If her older sister were to fail then it was her job to become a perfect weapon, ready to be used in whatever way the wielder desires.
At least, that's what she had heard from the other League members.
Marie Anne Cain was kept in isolation for the most part.
One room.
No bed.
Dried-out dirt floor.
No windows.
One door.
No light sources.
The only contact with other humans she would receive was the nurse assigned to her, the assassins who would randomly attack her, and on the rare occasion, her father.
The nurse was in charge of taking care of her injuries, giving Marie 'new' clothes, and any other hygiene tasks.
The nurse never talked.
She had been ordered not to talk just like the assassins had.
It really didn't matter that no one talked to her.
The red and black bug talked to her while she slept.
So did the black cat.
And the green turtle, the yellow bee, the orange fox, the purple butterfly, and many other little different colored creatures.
The League had decided that while her older sister Cassandra would receive training, she would only learn from trial by fire.
If she wished to learn how to fight, then Marie Anne Cain had to learn by observation, and by trial and error. No one would teach her.
She couldn't learn much from the assassin that kept attacking her because they always killed her too quickly.
So the little creatures that talked to Marie in her sleep brought people to teach her.
The red and black bug brought an Amazon Queen named Hiyppolyta. She taught Marie how to speak in her tongue and fight like her sisters.
The black cat brought a fallen king named Arthur. She taught her court etiquette and how to belong at a table of men who believed you to be nothing or believed that you had simply gotten luck on your side.
Each of the different colored creatures, the kwamis, brought someone to teach her, the kwamis' former chosen.
One of the times after training with kaalki's former chosen, Marie Anne had ended up in a garden.
Marie sat in the Garden admiring the plants until the League guards took Marie back to her 'bedroom', receiving punishment in the form of only getting a quarter of her food rations for the next month.
On the bright side, Marie had received a visit from her father.
He had asked how she got out of her 'room', but he received no answers.
The kwamis had told her not to speak to anyone in the League.
After the first incident, Marie became a lot more careful about leaving her 'room'. Getting the random teleportation under control and only ever leaving her 'room' once a week to gather information about what's been going on in the place outside her 'room'.
One of the times she snuck out Marie Anne saw her sister for the first time.
She had been six at the time, her older sister being eight, and seemed to be about to go on a mission, her first mission if the talk of the League was to be believed.
Marie wondered when her first mission would be.
Mare wondered when she would get to prove herself to her father's approval and be allowed outside of her 'room'.
It didn’t happen the way she thought it would or the way she wanted it to.
She had heard bits and pieces of what happened to Cassandra Cain, her older sister.
She had heard stories about how Cassandra had abandoned the League, becoming a traitor.
Marie hated it.
The more she heard the whispers of the League members the more she disliked the League, and the more she was angry on Cassandra’s behalf.
Her father had claimed her older sister to be a disgrace to their bloodline, and she hated him for it.
Marie Anne had died multiple times from her father’s orders and from the many trials he had her face, but Marie had never hated him for it.
However, calling Cassandra Cain, her older sister, a disgrace? That was a line he shouldn’t have crossed.
From that point on the trials got harder, a consequence of the difficulty was the death rate increasing.
Not for Marie Anne Cain.
No.
The deaths were the assassins who aimed to kill her.
She had felt horrible about her first kill but the kwamis had been quick to reassure her that it was a necessity of life. Queen Hippolyta and King Arther agreed that sometimes you must take a life so that you can survive.
When she was seven, a year after Cassandra’s disappearance, a group of twenty assassins attacked her without warning.
She had, of course, come out alive, with only a single cut on her right cheek. The cut following the same pather as her cheekbone.
She had noticed that there had been two additional people in the room, both of the people simply watching as if this was their own personal entertainment, so she had paid them no mind.
That was until she recognized them.
The additional people?
Her father, and Ra’s Al-Ghul.
Once the fight was over, Marie Anne fell to one knee, with her head hung low, offering her weapon, the weapon she had taken off one of the assassins to Ra’s following the etiquette she had seen other League members perform.
Ra’s let out a pleased hum.
“She will do.” Ra’s states before leaving the room.
Marie’s father seemed pleased with himself as he ordered her to stand and follow, leading her to a new room.
Inside the room was Talia Al-Ghul holding an infant.
“The Demon Head has granted you the honor of protecting and guarding his heir with your life.” Marie’s father informed her.
She gave a firm nod before bowing to the Demon head’s daughter and the Demon head’s heir.

have you heard of the manga earl cain? i just read the plot summary on wikipedia after someone compared it to black butler, it is from the 90s and is REALLY similar, victorian-era manga featuring an orphaned earl with a mysterious butler and estranged evil brother. the ultimate enemy is also doing creepy experiments to revive the dead ("deadly dolls" that thrive off of human blood). there was also a circus storyline. i wonder if yana was inspired by it???
Earl Cain/Godchild vs Black Butler
⚠️ Long post ⚠️
Well, the original Earl Cain series was published, split between two related shōjo mags, between 1991 and 1994. Actually, it was published in those mags under four short, separately titled series… then split between five volumes and later referred to, collectively, as Earl Cain. Yana Toboso turned 10 in 1994, and it’s possible she read the series, though it probably would have been a few years later.
Both mangakas seem to have been inspired by historical Victorian England, as well as British and European literary giants (Hans Christian Andersen, Lewis Carroll, Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Arthur Conan Doyle, etc… and at least in Kaori Yuki’s case also Kafka) and pop culture (various movies, games, and manga/anime). Yana Toboso seems to incorporate more folklore, in general, while Kaori Yuki (to the best of my knowledge) focuses on vampires, zombies, and biblical stories. Yana-san incorporates all that plus quite a bit of Norse, Japanese, Egyptian… and some Celtic mythologies. Both of them also eventually toured England (particularly London) to do some research, though Kaori Yuki didn’t do her tour of London until she was working on Godchild, which wasn’t premiered until October 2006. Idk about Kaori Yuki, but Yana-san now has someone on her team that helps with historical research.
Was she inspired at all by Kaori Yuki’s early works? Perhaps so. But I personally think that Kaori Yuki was possibly later inspired by the quick successes of new series like Black Butler to return to her old series with a sequel called Godchild, which, as I said earlier, didn’t show up until October 2006. Running these series neck and neck, but with one in a shōnen mag and the other in a shōjo mag, they could have been picking each other’s brains, for all we know, though Kaori Yuki must be her senior by roughly two decades… at least, since she’s been active since about 1989. (Yana-san was born in 1984, while Kaori Yuki’s birth year is not publicly known.)
There are some important distinctions to make between Black Butler and the (combined) series Earl Cain, along with its sequel Godchild.
Black Butler is basically from the viewpoint of the butler, not the young master. The demon-turned-butler is canonically the titular and main character, and “Ciel” is merely one of a presumably long line of contractors. We learn so much about this contract because it’s pivotal in the demon’s long life. It’s ongoing, so we don’t know what the demon does afterwards, but this kid isn’t his first master; it’s just a particularly interesting contract. The demon has been named after a dead dog, and Sebastian happens to be a common name for butlers in Japanese stories set abroad, like England. Earl Cain is the titular and main character of his stories, and his butler is surprisingly loyal… for turning out to be a Deadly Doll. Also, the butler’s name comes from Riff Raff, a character from Rocky Horror Picture Show. 😆
Cain is at least 17 in his two series, whereas our “Ciel” is 10-13, nearing his 14th birthday, for the duration of the demon contract. We get various flashbacks of the twins all the way back to their birth, when “Ciel’s” birth is a surprise.
Cain eventually kills his own abusive father, whereas “Ciel” is trying to avenge the deaths of his entire immediate family, as well as the abuses he and his twin brother suffered at the hands of people they didn’t really know (but who largely ran in the same circles as their father). Our “Ciel” is currently fighting the Aurora Society and Undertaker, but his main goal is to figure out and defeat whoever planned and/or carried out the attack on Phantomhive Manor. And that wasn’t Undertaker, since he’s obsessing over his own losses when the Phantomhive family was attacked. It’s also not likely to be Vincent, having somehow faked his own death, as Undertaker has no reason to mistake those ashes as Vincent’s. Vincent, by all accounts, is very dead… and extras like “With Father” and the “Akuma6” chapter just emphasize he’s not alive and somehow faking his death.
Cain has multiple brothers and sisters, as well as half-siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, etc… and his father is very abusive. The stories are extremely convoluted, and Cain’s eldest sister turns out to be the most manipulative one of all, even having controlled their own father, who is (oddly enough) named Alexis. 🤔 Our “Ciel” and real Ciel only have each other, as far as real Ciel is concerned, but they also have cousins, aunts, and uncles. Their uncle Alexis seems to be the most oblivious of the bunch, but he’s also probably the nicest.
It’s hard to tell from the somewhat confusing wording of the Wikipedia entry on Cain’s stories, but Cain’s eldest sister appears to also be his mother? Incest is a common theme in the stories of his adventures. So is abuse from their father. Ciel’s parents are not related (at least not closely!), and they genuinely love each other and their children. Vincent and Rachel are gently manipulative of their sons but not the least bit openly abusive.
Cain’s own father, Alexis, is the one creating the so-called “Deadly Dolls”, and it’s ultimately because he’s trying to revive his eldest daughter, who had apparently died by suicide, as an end to her growing insanity. In Black Butler, it’s a reaper (136649/Undertaker) who is creating the “Bizarre Dolls”, though he might turn out to be the twins’ paternal grandfather, Cedric. And it’s confirmed that even Undertaker’s current experimentation with real Ciel’s corpse (and the others) stems from his loss of previous heads of the Phantomhive family, like Vincent (who would be his son, if he’s Cedric) and Cloudia/Claudia (who would be the mother of his children, if he’s Cedric). This part is arguably the biggest similarity between Earl Cain (and Godchild) and Black Butler.
Alexis (from Earl Cain) creates and runs Delilah, the secret society that makes the Deadly Dolls. Undertaker uses the Aurora Society to achieve many of his goals, but I don’t know if he created it. Meanwhile, Black Butler’s Alexis seems oblivious to quite a bit, but he openly destroys Bizarre Dolls on the Campania and seems disgusted by their mere existence. Black Butler also has a mysterious group called Osiris, and we don’t know who runs that… at all. Could be the queen — or John Brown — for all we know. Another family among the Evil Nobles? Something Undertaker started? Someone from a competing country, like Germany? 🤷🏻♀️ And what mysterious group convinced Undertaker to test out his Bizarre Dolls as “animal weapons”? 🤷🏻♀️ 🤷🏻♀️
The timelines are completely different.
The other big comparison is that both Earl Cain and Earl “Ciel” Phantomhive solve various mysteries, with Cain focusing on murder mysteries, whereas our “Ciel” does whatever assignment the queen gives him… as well as things that might help him reach his own goals. It often involves murder, but not always. The biggest difference here might be that Queen Victoria is a decidedly minor character in Earl Cain. While she (or John Brown) could still turn out to be the big baddie in Black Butler.
I still see way more in common between Black Butler and Nintendo’s Mother series, particularly Mother3. Characters, timeline, actions, etc. are much more deeply paralleled between Black Butler and that game series….
