Summary
- Fireday, 12th Gozran in the year 815 (Second Era). Early Summer.
- The party begin this session, just after midday, having ridden to Phlan.
- The party wait outside, hidden near farms and forest, whilst Varis makes his way into Phlan on foot. His presence is detected by a Cult spy when Varis exposes himself as a Rogue by using Thieve’s Cant. The Cult Spy alerts a passing patrol and then Varis decides to make a run for it. The patrol chases him, and soon Varis is forced to flee the town running for his life towards the large adjacent forests whilst numerous patrols and mounted Knights try to stop him.
- Hearing the sounds of war horns blazing and seeing Varis running out of the city whilst being pursued the rest of the party decide to hide in the forests. Trenchant makes the decision to ride alone to locate and help Varis.
- Just before the slowly gaining patrols catch up and find Varis, they are ordered to turn back, to deal with another threat. Varis overhears them talking about someone referred to as the Black Knight having attacked a Cult supply warehouse in the city.
- Varis and Trenchant reunite and then return to the party to inform them of what has happened. As most of the Cult forces appear to have moved over to the far side of the city, obviously to deal with this Black Knight problem, this allows the party to enter the city and make their way to the ruined manor of the Order Of The Gauntlet.
- Varis gets an uneasy feeling as he is walking through the city, like someone is watching the party.
- Sir Krondor hands over the captured Drow prisoner, Yustena Karas, to Sir Zern. Trenchant, using his Cloak Of The Elven Kind, makes his way alone to the port side of the city to meet the Harpers. He manages to get there safely, avoiding numerous patrols and seeing the occasional lone figure standing around watching carefully; obviously more Cult spies.
- Trenchant speaks to Olisara and hands the recovered Harper items to her. He informs her of the events that occurred within the Twilight Marsh and the Cult’s creation of a Dracolich.
- He learns that more people have gone missing. First it was adventurers, then gem and jewellery merchants, then other merchants and now random people. These abductions are not believed to be the work of the Cult nor of the local Thieve’s Guild, The Welcomers. Olisara takes Trenchant into a private sleeping chamber and shows him a young boy, the only known surviver of these abductions. The boy was found hidden under a bed, the rest of his family now missing and the house broken into. The boy has not spoken since, except for one phrase repeated over and over, “The eyes of Dendar”.
- Trenchant recognises the name. Dendar is a Yuan-ti god, known as the Night Serpent. It is said she was created when the first mortal dreamed, and she came into existence to feed off the nightmares of mortals ever since. Described as a gigantic primordial snake like creature, over 300 feet long, with blue black scales harder than metal, large yellow eyes that can see into the souls of mortals, and teeth filled with deadly poisonous razor sharp fangs.
- Trenchant uses his Bardic skills to try and pull the child out of his mental distress, which he manages to lessen for only a brief instant. The boys reals back in horror, obviously reliving a real nightmare, muttering to himself, “The snakes! The snakes! They come from the ground! They took …. they took everyone!” The child bursts into tears and is now unresponsive to any further interaction.
- Trenchant makes his way back to the Gauntlet Manor and rejoins the party, but he feels he is being followed on the way back, and he quickly makes his way back without delay.
- Reunited the party discuss what has happened. Ragnar too has noticed movement around the manor, in the shadows, but is not able to make anything out. Varis informs the party that he saw someone being pulled into a nearby alley and abducted by two shadowy figures. It was done quickly and quietly.
- As a group now, the party makes their way the short distance to the Velvet Doublet to return their borrowed horses back to Rolk. The party decide to wait here until nightfall and hopefully the increased patrols on the port side of the city, their destination, will be gone.
- After sunset the party make their way via back streets and alleyways. Along the way they see a mother and her child being harassed by a Dragonsoul officer of the Cult and two Knights Of The Tears Of Virulence, traitor Knights, having left the Order Of The Black Fist.
- The party won’t stand for this, as they watch the helpless woman being struck to the ground. The party races forward, with Labarett sprinting to impose himself in front of the prone woman.
- It is only then that the rest of the Knights, standing off to either side of the street, are then seen. Now the party face ten Knights lead by a Dragonsoul officer.
- The party hold nothing back. Soon the quiet of the dark night is broken as powerful spells are cast. A raging Wall Of Fire fills one side street, lighting up that city block for all to see, surrounding a group of Knights. The Knights force their way through the fire but are badly burnt doing so, some falling to ground burnt to death.
- The other Knights either engage Labarett or fall back waiting in a defensive line, crossbows ready. Trenchant covers this waiting group of Knights in a Stinking Cloud, forcing the Knights to slowly make their way out coughing, one by one.
- Sir Krondor and Gim have reached the combat, both of their weapons glowing from the power of the full moon of Harell, and are engaging Knights that emerge out of the Stinking Cloud. Varis, keeping to the rear, is picking off individual Knights with his arrows.
- During this time, the Dragonsoul officer, having flown out of the Stinking Cloud has landed on top of one of the building roofs and is hurling orbs of fire down into the party. Naillae has snuck upwards too, her Dragontooth Dagger striking back and forth. Trenchant has also moved upwards and is hurling insults towards the foes.
- Ragnar tries to stay out of direct combat, no longer having the defence of his shield which Throstulgrael melted in the Twilight Marsh, and instead casts spells at the enemy.
- When the party begin to get the upper hand having killed most of the Knights, more enemy forces arrive, bursting forth from a set of large double doors from the end of the street. Eight Red Plume Mercenaries lead by two Dragonsouls officers have run to the scene having heard the explosions and seen this city block lit up in the night.
- The Mercenaries form into three ranks and then send a volley of crossbow bolts towards the party, whilst the two Dragonsoul officers fly into air and land on the rooftops, hurling down orbs of fire.
- Trenchant casts Animate Objects, his most powerful spell, and six of the dead Knights float up from the ground and begin smashing their dead bodies into the newly arrived mercenaries. The rest of the party are still dealing with finishing off the remaining Knights.
- Varis, firing arrows from the rear, turns in horror to see more of the Knights appear from a rear side street. Six Knights with long bows move silently into two ranks whilst Knights with long spears moved into the front. Three more knights appear on one of the roof tops, near the first Dragonsoul officer. Leading this group is a Knight holding a banner with a Black Fist on it.
- Varis starts to duck low, expecting a volley of arrows to hit his body from the newly arrived Knights but instead the Knights fire over the party and send a volley of arrows to strike into the Red Plume Mercenaries.
- Looking up at the roof top, the three new Knights start attacking the Dragonsoul officer. Trenchant looks closely at the new Knights, though wearing the same armour, these Knights do not have the new green paint on the front of their chests nor have the green scarf around their visors. Tenchant yells out, “These are Knights Of The Black Fist! Allies!”
- The Dragonsoul officers all turn towards the Knights Of The Black Fist. One of the officers points towards the Knight holding the banner and yells, “Greycastle! Kill her!” All three Dragonsouls then hurl orbs of fire at this banner Knight. The agile figure dodges two of the orbs, fire exploding on the ground around her, but the third hits her on the back and head, knocking her helmet off. Fire still smouldering around her, the figure turns towards the party. Her scared face shows determination and courage. She drops the banner and instead pulls out a sword and shield. A small grey pendant worn on her forehead shows a Castle set on a waving sea.
- Narrowing her eyes she yells at the party, “Fall back! Vorgansharax is coming!” As if in answer, the faint sound of wings can be heard from the sky.
- Sir Krondor looks up into the night sky and can see a massive black shape that is blocking the stars, growing in size and coming straight for the battle. Running the Dwarf Knight yells, “Dragon! Get into the side streets!”
- All at once the party start running back away from the main street, as the last Knight Of The Tears Of Virulence begins to chase them down. Varis kills one Dragonsoul officer with an arrow, covering the party’s escape.
- Greycastle and her Knights Of The Black Fist start running away, down one side street, the two remaining Dragonsouls officers flying upwards to follow them rather than the party. Greycastle turns towards the party shouting, “Do what you can! Protect the people!”
- The remaining Red Plumes mercenaries, having previously fought their way through Trenchant’s animated corpses, start running towards the fleeing party.
- A large dark figure appears over the main street, blocking out the night sky. The shape flies fast and low over the city, the lights of the city showing it to be the Ancient Green Dragon, Vorgansharax. Poisonous gas erupts out from its mouth and flours into the main street killing some of the animated corpses and mercenaries. The gas flows over Sir Krondor and Gim, but they manage to just survive thanks to their Dwarven resilience to poison. Coughing the Dwarf Knight looks up to see the dark shape flying away but to his horror another dark shape, just as large but not as solid is flying towards the party. Now with true terror the Dwarf Knight grabs his cousin and begins sprinting towards the closest side street as he yells, “Dracolich!”
- The party decide they can’t reach the side street that Greycastle and her knights ran down in time and instead turn into the closest one. Ragnar pulls a metal cover off a sewer hole in the middle of the street and with much haste the party begin to descend into it one by one.
- As all the party have now entered the side street, they hear the roar of acid as the main street is now filled with acid breath from the Dracolich flying past them. Most of the remaining mercenaries and the last enemy Knight is instantly killed and melted.
- Not wishing to be caught in the open as the two Dragons turn to strafe them again the party all enter the sewer, pulling the metal grate over them.
- A fifteen foot wide circular sewer filled with foot deep watery sludge is revealed. The smell is terrible. Ragnar points at some fresh carved marks into the stone wall, “Looks like markers.”
<And as the party catch their breath from near certain death, wondering who or what left these marks, that is the end of the session.>

IT HAS BEEN about a year now since my involvement with the Dozier School For Boys began taking over my world. Kicking off the whirlwind was my need to get my hands on the school’s student ledgers. I won’t rehash the entire adventure but what I will say is that it took many frustrating nights online, several emails to the Archivist, the potential of an $600+ bill to get digital copies & finally an 8 hour round trip before I’d actually have what I wanted…Well at least a quarter of what I wanted!
HAVING ABSOLUTELY NO clue what I was looking for, I spent the next several weeks trying to organize what I had. Almost immediately number of very distinct patterns began jumping out at me. The same sentencing judges over & over again, the SAME sentence length OR lack there of & a crap load of blank spaces; Specifically under the “WHEN/HOW RELEASED” columns. One would expect that any institution handling children would be required to keep detailed & accurate records of ALL of its charges, especially when it comes to their last known whereabouts BUT that would make too much sense, now wouldn’t it…
THE INFO THAT I had gotten was only from the latest volume of the ledgers & didn’t even make a dent in the number of boys that had been shoved through the doors to be reformed. I knew there were hundreds OR even thousands of names in those books. I maybe had a few hundred at the most. By now, I had gotten used to what I like to call the “Hurry Up & Stop” method of researching. Basically I’d need specific info, finally get said info ONLY to start looking it over & promptly figure out that I needed additional material OR even worse, I’d need something entirely different altogether. In this case, I had just assumed that I’d eventually be making another trip to the Archives; That is until I ended up becoming involved with Bob Straley & taking over his website…And right there on one of the site pages was a link to the detailed, handwritten notes that WHB Mr. Andrew Puel had spent hours putting together.
Mr. Andrew Puel At The State Archives…Sitting In The EXACT Same Spot That I Did When I Was There!
NOT IT!!
WHEN I SAW that link, I was beyond thrilled! I was finally going to have something reliable to validate what I had come up with! I had spoken with Andrew at Bob Straley’s memorial service & knew that any research he had done would be the best & most accurate info that I could possibly get. When the page loaded, it definitely did NOT show what I had been hoping for; In all actuality, it showed nothing but this:
ODDLY THE INFO was missing! I started clicking on some of the other older links on the website & sure enough, there were quite a few that led to nowhere. I don’t know why it gone OR where it went, only that it’s not there. I tried not to get to aggravated, thinking that there had to be a hard copy among the thousands of documents that I have. I spent the next several weeks going through EVERY page, folder, digital file, etc. & found nothing. Bob kept everything, so to say I was puzzled that he wouldn’t have a copy of something so important was a huge understatement. I did another look through, literally taking out every piece of paper, one by one; Still nothing.
Well Damn….
AN EVENING IN GAINESVILLE
ON A FRIDAY in late February, I made the 3 hour trip to Gaineville. With me was a small black bag filled with what I believed to be the most important material related to the Arthur G Dozier School for Boys. I pulled up to a beautiful home, tucked back in a quiet sub division that was surrounded by forest. Standing outside was a familiar face, Mr. Bryant Middleton. The “Whitehouse Boy” greeted me with a smile & a brief hug before inviting me inside to meet his wife. Both graciously spent several hours telling their personal story of Dozier & how the WHB’s Organization was founded. They were both lovely people & I was grateful that they had been so willing to meet with me & be as open as they were. When we finally moved into the dining room to look over the things that I had brought, I began pulling things out. I yanked a folder out that had been wedged inside of my over full bag & a stack of papers fell out. The stack was stapled together & folded in half. I picked it up to see what it was & as I unfolded it, my jaw hit the floor!
OH…MY…GOD…It was a hard copy of the list of missing boys! The same list that I had just spent weeks trying to find! The stuff inside of that bag was the stuff that I pulled out & reviewed quite frequently & there’s absolutely NO way that I would missed that thick stack of ledger pages! I slid the stack across the table, explaining to Bryant why I was a bit stunned at finding them. He thought it was strange as well. I’m not going to get into the specifics of my time with the Middletons in this post, although I will say that I’m very fortunate to have met with them. They’re great people & they continue to work toward keeping the future from repeating the past.
WHERE COULD THEY BE?
OF COURSE THERE is minimal info on the boys on this list. What is known is that most were listed as escaped but never recovered. A lot lacked permanent homes OR guardians, so there wouldn’t have been any concerned parents wondering about the whereabouts of their lost boy. It should also be noted that the last place they were seen was the Dozier School for Boys in Marianna. That leaves so many unanswered questions; Could ALL 185 boys on that list have actually successfully escaped & moved on to a better life? Even if that did happen, would it be possible that NOT 1 single child ever be heard from again? I suppose it could be possible for some BUT for All 185? I seriously have my doubts & given the history of Dozier, I’d say that’s highly unlikely. Especially considering the significant proof of other burial sites on the school’s 1200+ acres.Whether or not they continued life after Dozier OR their lives were taken at the school, they each deserve to be recognized. I’ll let them speak for themselves….

- As midday approaches the party make their way over to the specified dock. The are hundreds of docks within the internal protected bay of Crescent Moon. Many people, locals, sailors, and sea food merchants fill the open square set before this dock.
- It is a busy and noisy area. People move about carrying cargo, sellers are shouting out what goods they sell and even some children run around playing.
- A large ship, carrack class, can be seen moored at the dock. It’s sails are furled and numerous sailors in the distinct red clothing of the Crescent Moon Navy can be seen loading boxes and barrels onto the ship.
- The party see the War Duke ahead of them in the centre of the public square with two Crescent Moon soldiers escorting her. The party watch in horror, unable to intervene, as a nearby hooded figure leaps towards the War Duke and plunges a black dagger into her neck. The hooded robe blows away from the figure to reveal an Assassin of the Dragon Cult.
- The War Duke immediately becomes unconscious and her skin becomes grey from the deadly poison in her system.
- Now the scene erupts into chaos. Battle begins with the party racing forward to ward off the Assassin and save the War Duke, as more Cult forces appear from two large ware houses near the jetty. A Red Wizard of Thay appears, protected by three Dragoncult Officers, and he attempts to summon a teleport portal but Trenchant’s Counterspell stops the portal forming.
- Four Cult Fanatics also appear and begin casting ghostly Spiritual Weapons to attack the party whilst a group of Dragonwing Enforcers leap and fly towards the party and the ship.
- The battle is going back forth. Each time the party stabilise the wounds of the War Duke, the Assassin strikes her again. The crew of the Frostskimmr immediately launch a counter attack and begin fending off Dragonwing Enforcers. Soon, large heavy ballista bolts are flying from the Frostskimmr and are annihilating Cult forces.
- Gim fires a lucky shot with his Masterwork heavy crossbow and injures the Red Wizard of Thay and destroys the teleport crystal he was using to call forth the teleport portal. No more Cult forces will be arriving.
- Trenchant finally manages to fly away with the unconscious body of the War Duke, after she was stabilised and cured of her poison.
- Naillae is dropped to the ground, unconscious and bleeding to death.
- The Cult forces are desperate, knowing that they are not getting any more reinforcements, their plan being stopped by the destruction of the teleport crystal. Soon the Red Wizard is killed and so too one of the Dragoncult Officers.
- Gim has another lucky shot with his Masterwork heavy crossbow and destroys the crossbow of the Cult Assassin who was firing poisoned bolts at the party.
- When a large garrison of fully armoured and well trained Crescent Moon soldiers arrive, the remaining Cult forces surrender, all except for the Assassin who leaps and climbs up and over the buildings to disappear into the busy and crowded streets of the large city.
- Trenchant has flown the War Duke back to the Royal Palace where healers see to her needs. As she awakes she looks into the eyes of Trenchant, her saviour. She gives him her personal handkerchief, a sign of affection within the nobility.
- Soon the rest of the party return to the Palace and it is discovered that one of the War Dukes’ assistant had been a traitor and had informed the Cult of the midday meeting at the dock. The assistant is now missing, presumed long gone and returned to the hidden Cult forces that still dwell within the city. Luckily, this traitor knew nothing of the details of what occurred and what was discussed within the Council, nor had any knowledge of where the party was headed to next.
- The party arrange to sleep overnight and leave in the morning aboard the Frostskimmr. They spend an uneasy night in the Palace, suspicious of further Cult spies.
- Sunday, 7th Pharast in the year 815 (Second Era). Late Spring.
- The party arise and in the morning board the Frostskimmr. They set sail heading south and follow the coast. Over the next six days they get used to life on board the ship. The days pass with no incident, except each afternoon the same stillness, the sense of unease that the party felt previously when they first arrived in Crescent Moon, is felt for brief time again. The party surmise that someone is using the Drakhorn each day to summon Dragons. They look around at each other worried that perhaps they chose the wrong mission to start with.
- Now committed to this mission, they continue following the coast, until they arrive at the opening of a wide river on the coast. The low profile hull of Frostskimmr proceeds into the river, traveling inland for a few hours until it arrives at a smaller narrower section of the river that has a wooden bridge spanning it.
- “Half face” tells the party that this is as far as he can go and gives the directions to the party on how to proceed to Boareskyr. They follow a marked country road, going further into a mountain area. After half a day walking they finally arrive at Boareskyr Bridge.
- The large ancient stone bridge provides the only way inland across to the eastern lands of Taggriell. On this side of the bridge stands the settlement of Boareskyr. Little more than a collection of tents, wagons, and caravans providing food, fresh mounts, and other services to travellers and a home of lost souls and those wishing to avoid official attention.
- A lone stone tower, set higher up on the mountain, overlooking the bridge can be seen. The banner of Fanur and the Knights Of The Anvil can be seen on the tower.
- After Sir Krondor impresses some of the local scallywags when he throws one of them into a tent for lack of respect, they tell the party that if they are after information they should go to Bolo’s Tentside Inn. They head over to a colourful large pavilion near the centre of Boareskyr’s tent city.
- After entering the large pavilion they speak to the owner of the inn, a female Halfling called Bolo. She tells the party that she has seen someone matching the description of Varram The White. Apparently he was here six days ago with a group of a dozen other companions, including a large number of very large hooded figures. Bolo mentions that Varram killed one of the “Scaly ones” who had crept into town but the party can’t figure out exactly what she means by that.
- The party leave to head to the Anvil tower, except for Varis who stays and plays some gambling with some of the untrustworthy locals. He does so for a while but keeps losing each round as he realises that everyone at the table is cheating. As he finally leaves the game he learns about where the dead body of the “Scaly one” was dumped. Varis heads out and searches west of the settlement until he comes across a decomposing body of a humanoid. It has green scaly skin and long dark hair but the facial features are so decomposed that it is hard to identify what it is.
- Meanwhile, the rest of the party have gone to the Anvil tower where they discover that it is only manned by four Knights, and each of which is there because they have made some mistake or infraction and have to do a tour of duty in this remote tower as penance. They speak to the Knight on duty, Sir Dawn, who is slightly intoxicated and not seeming to take his duty on this tower very seriously.
- Sir Krondor gives him a dressing down and he agrees to watch out for the party for the next couple of weeks, as they travel to the east into the Serpent Hills to follow Varram, and to keep watch for their return.
- Eventually Varis returns to the party, telling them of the dead green body he found. Sir Dawn informs the party that the “Scaly one” is a Yuan-ti. Trenchant knows about these dangerous and evil beings. These humanoid snake creatures are highly intelligent, organised and skilled. They are a dangerous lot and look down upon all other races.
- The party get to sleep in the Anvil tower and plan to wake early to start heading into the east.
- Moonday, 8th Pharast in the year 815 (Second Era). Late Spring.
- The party awake early, still in darkness, with sunrise being a couple of hours away. Saying fair well to the Anvil Knights the party leave and head over the large stone bridge.
- Sir Krondor looks up into the night sky, and sees the small moon of Harell, nearly full. He touches the handle of his enchanted battleaxe Snaidh and smiles, thinking of the power it will wield in the coming night under the full moon of Harell.
<And as dawn approaches and the party stop so that Labarett can perform the ritual upon the disguised Black Dragon Mask, that is the end of the session.>

Review: Resonance and Revolt by Rosanne Rabinowitz
Rosanne Rabinowitz's Resonance and Revolt was published by Eibonvale Press in March 2018. Information about Rosanne Rabinowitz in her own words: "I started writing when I produced ‘zines in the 1990s like Feminaxe and Bad Attitude, contributing articles, reviews and interviews. Then I began to make stuff up. My fiction has since found its way into anthologies and magazines and I completed a creative writing MA at Sheffield Hallam University. My novella Helen's Story was a finalist for the 2013 Shirley Jackson Award for achievement in the ‘literature of the dark fantastic’. I live in South London, an area that Arthur Machen once described as "shapeless, unmeaning, dreary, dismal beyond words." In this most unshapen place I engage in a variety of occupations including care work, copywriting and freelance editing. I spend a lot of time drinking coffee and listening to loud music while looking out my tenth-floor window. Sometimes it's whisky." Click here to visit her official website. Information about Resonance and Revolt: "Unfulfilled desires transmit themselves across the years in unfathomable ways..." - From Greil Marcus, Lipstick Traces A sect of sensual medieval heretics stumbles upon the secrets of quantum entanglement, a centuries-old wanderer thrives on rebellion as well as blood in the ruins of post-WWI Munich. Anti-austerity demonstrations lead to haunting connections with past and parallel events, while quantum computing meets 'welfare reform' in our near-future. Meanwhile, persecuted Jews in early 20th century Russia must decide whether extraterrestrials are allies or the schnorrers out of space. The stories of Rosanne Rabinowitz span the centuries in a remarkable mixture of European history and the familiar world of modern Britain – as well as some all-too-likely near futures. These stories are rooted in the spirit of resistance and rebellion without ever feeling didactic. They are coloured with a sense of the fantastic, the surreal and even the mystical – rubbing shoulders with the reality that arises from every street, every shout of fury or peal of laughter, every dizzying glimpse of human possibilities. "All together as they are here, they weave a cyclical sense of the ebb and flow of power and tyranny and resistance, yet the end result is not hopeless but quite the opposite. Just like so many of the characters in Rosanne’s writing, as we read these stories gathered in one volume, we begin to see ourselves as living with echoes of and surrounded by the past. That the struggle is ongoing does not make it seem futile; instead, we are connected, for as one character notes, “what we call time, and history, exists in layers all around us. And I should be able to see every one of them.” Reading Rosanne’s stories feels like standing in the ruins of a thousand-year-old fortress where you can almost hear the past breathing around you, or in some other liminal place: a magical wood, perhaps, but sometimes the most ordinary of city streets, where you might slip into somewhere else before you realize what’s happened." - From the Introduction by Lynda E. Rucker "I will always raise my voice and write things down so people will know about them. I will never be like a bell without a tongue." - From The Bells of the Harelle REVIEW: RESONANCE AND REVOLT BY ROSANNE RABINOWITZ Read More ... https://www.risingshadow.net/articles/reviews/897-review-resonance-and-revolt-by-rosanne-rabinowitz
