Moment of Awesome - Arthur Centino/Longshot:With Death in New York and Hope down, Arthur steps in. Showing how dangerous his powers can really be.
The man's eye was pulsing steadily. Unseen, the threads of probability tensed.
He let loose the dagger in a fluid flourish, and its handle bounced squarely off Death's forehead. Another lucky shot.
"Sorry," Arthur said. "I had trouble believing someone could be so melodramatic, and I figured you might not be real. Had to double check, you know?"
The dagger clattered to Death's feet as the Horseman simply stared at him, unimpressed.
"I take this to mean the two of you plan to persist until terminally prevented from doing so, then." With a heavy sigh, the Horseman rolled his neck and took a step forward. "Well, if we must, let's get it over w—"
Death’s intent was the final roll of the dice needed. The taught threads pulled tight, and Arthur’s eye flared.
One has a 1 in 15,300 chance of being hit by lightning.
A sharp boom interrupted the Horseman’s words, followed by a shrill approaching roar. Arthur picked up his pace as he crossed the distance to the fallen Hope.
Only 1 in 8 million people are struck by lightning twice in their lives.
His boots landed close to one of the few scattered knives that one actually struck true, somehow puncturing an intake to a discarded propane tank toppled in Hope’s show of telekinetic force. It hissed as it leaked vaporized gas.
Now, the chances of being in a building collapse are hard to quantify.
Were the swaying walls in the abandoned structure caused by lines of forces, or a result of neglect? Had the previous flooding underscored years of a weakening foundation? Either way, the cracking of concrete joined the building cacophony.
They say the chance of being hit by falling space debris is less than a billion to 1.
The roar crescendoed as everything happened at once. What has previously been only a streak in the sky above New York had steadily grown in size during Arthur’s stalling, the approaching remnant of a discarded rocket fuselage burning bright as it reentered the atmosphere. It struck right in the center of the improvised circle of knives. Right into Death.
At the same time, the gathering forces of stress finally broke the nearby derelict brownstone. Sheets of concrete and drywall fell as the building collapsed into its sinking foundation.
Another strike of lightning was the cherry on top, igniting the gas in a sonorous THWUM.
Arthur vaulted over reigning debris and rolled, scooping the redheaded girl into his arms to just miss being smashed by a slab of concrete. A slab that provided excellent cover for the small canister explosion.

Moment of Awesome - Jessica Jones: Following the destruction of Murderworld, Jessica and Arthur look through the debris, finding no lead on the kidnapper, but taking the moment to discuss more sensitive topics.
A flash of gold light faded from the car interior, leaving the man before Jess looking deflated.
Arthur Centino sighed from the middle of their assorted collection of debris. The robotic hand had been the best find, but the rest was a scattering of battered and pulverized office equipment. A burned and bent USB. What must have once been a coffee cup handle. The ripped remnants of some sort of high end fabric. A crushed taser with teeth marks. What might have been pink parasol made of steel. Everything coated in a sickly looking layer of concrete dust.
The man shook his head and clenched the one leather glove he had removed in a white knuckled grip. He'd offered very little explanation to his conspirator, so Jess had the lunchtime entertainment of watching the blond cautiously touch all of their finds one by one. He'd been hesitant, almost reluctant, at first, but had increased in speed and resolve with each new item.
Whatever had happened, it wasn't a victory.
Jessica, somewhat bemused, watched Arthur, her eyebrows coming together as he clutched the glove. She finally broke the silence they'd been sitting in. "Listen, I know you're into some hippie shit because I have literally seen you drink kombucha, but what the fuck are you doing?" Despite the actual words, this was offered almost gently, perhaps to interrupt something she felt was becoming too intense.
Arthur responded with a slow blink, as if clearing clouds from his mind. It took him a moment to refocus. Jess received a soft laugh as Arthur visibly unclenched, coming back to his usual ease. "You know, I'd never thought about what this all looks like from the outside." Another laugh.
Watching Arthur reorient himself had deepened Jessica's frown to something more along the lines of concerned and dubious. "What what looks like?" she asked, a little pointedly - a person who did not enjoy feeling like she was missing the point.
"Oh," he said with a self-critical shake of his head. "Right. I've got psychometry plus the luck."
Jessica closed her eyes and vented a breath through her nose. "Please pretend some of us don't have every mutant power indexed in our heads."
Arthur wiggled his fingers. "I can see memories on objects," his look drifted to somewhere else as he explained, "the past, sometimes the future. Just the strong stuff, really, like how I now know what it feels like to be attacked by a cougar."
"Fucking Sharon," Jessica muttered as her brain processed - the other thing. "Memories on objects. That sounds - inconvenient." She slid a glance toward him, down to the glove in his hands, her expression shuttered. "See anything useful?"
Another sigh through clenched teeth. "Just panic and fear, and only a handful of imprints. I was hoping for more."
"I figured." Jess lifted a shoulder, but her disappointment showed anyway, in the twist of her mouth and the way she looked back down at her own hands. "I figured. Considering the level of that demolition and the organization it'd take to kidnap more than a dozen kids."

Moment of Awesome - Emma Frost/The White Queen: Concerned about strangeness impacting the resident psis, Arthur Centino interviews Emma and gets a shameful confession.
Arthur's polite smile broke into an answering grin as Emma spoke. "I have to say, your accent is superb — clothing for our thoughts." He lengthened his own vowels at the end, drawing his voice closer to Emma's own. "You've got more upper crust, there, though? Boardroom aristocracy. Hint of Boston at the edges. Fabulous indeed."
The blond man waved that off, getting back to business. His eyes shone with good humor. "My goal here is to learn what's normal for you before jumping into what might have been different lately. Sounds like you're describing what Haller would call," and he reflexively switched accents again to something closer to Jim's holmesian logic, "standard telepathic projection and manipulation." He put a hand to his chin in thought. "So let's get to it. Has anything been different within the last three months? Flares, expected growth, not coming as easily as normal?"
"Standard telepathic projection and manipulation in the way Cartier makes standard jewellery, yes," replied Emma, smiling. "None of the more exotic flavourings like technopathy or psychometry. As for changes. . . None that I've noticed particularly. I haven't been in the Mansion much, I admit, and from your email it sounds like you think that's where any changes might manifest? I mean," Emma leaned back in her chair, "I did unexpectedly turn into organic diamond during a spectacularly traumatic event, so I'm willing to consider more deeply if you have parameters to work within?"
He nodded over his notes, but extended a hand. "Psychometry here," and he gave his fingers a wiggle, "I just discovered I had it last year, but it's a good example — I've been putting my own memories onto objects without knowing it. There are at least ten others experiencing power issues — just the psis — but the common part does seem to be being at or around the Mansion." Arthur tried to give an honest smile. "There's no clear through-line or objective yet. When's the last time you were at the Mansion?"
Emma shrugged. “I’ve flitted in and out; a few hours here or there over the last few weeks.” She frowned suddenly, tapped a diamond fingernail on the desk. “When you’re talking differences in powers. . . would you be talking about a shift in my telepathy? Or is there any suggestion of suddenly using an. . . associated power.” She shook her head slightly and sighed. “Let me be terribly blunt about the whole thing; is there a possibility I could be suffering from telekinesis?”
This got his interest. Arthur raised both eyebrows and leaned in just a little. "Please, tell me more about 'suffering from telekinesis.' I've never had to worry about it."
Emma made a moue. “It’s so. . . tacky,” she sighed. “All these telepaths going round and developing telekinesis. Like lifting things with your mind isn’t just turning your brain into a brute force machine. Telekinesis isn’t elegant, Arthur.” She sighed again, this one deep and positively heart-rending. “I assumed one of the others was pranking me.”
"If it helps," he offered with an extended hand, not close enough to touch, "Everyone else is likely too preoccupied to have noticed. TK does seem," and there was the slow consideration of carefully chosen words here, "common paired with telepathy. Are we talking big things," and the man spread his arms to helpfully mime lifting a heavy object, "or smaller?" His gesture tightened, as if he was trying to indicate the shape of a racketball.
“Pieces of paper,” replied Emma. “Small items falling over behind me, that kind of thing. The kind of thing that might be a sudden unexpected gust of wind, or dust, or a sudden unexpected burst of TK, all of which are available to residents here. Ugh,” said Emma, somehow managing to make the word sound impossibly elegant. “Adrienne once told me she saw a few of my bedside trinkets floating beside me when she came in to wake me up. The thing is, Mr Centino,” said Emma, almost but not quite accusatory, “I absolutely refuse to be telekinetic. My mind is a scalpel, not a bulldozer. If I need to lift heavy objects, I have my own methods.” And for a moment, her skin rippled into diamond form and then back again.

Moment of Awesome - Arthur Centino/Longshot:
At the District X Halloween event, Arthur encounters a newly-returned Illyana Rasputin.
The man's grin flashed, "I know plenty of things, and one of them is where to find the best cake tonight. You're in luck."
There was a clang and a clatter behind Ilyanna to punctuate this statement, and the brief flash of something not quite human shaped running across the welcome courtyard. Whatever it was, it caught his attention enough to lead toward a distracted glance away from the Center's guest. "Huh. Costumes get more creative every year."
Illyana recognized the brief glimpse of purple and red. She hadn't brought any of the lesser demons topside with her, but this was a good night for that particular one. "Trickster imps. Mostly a nuisance, they're obnoxious about holidays like this. They'll probably make a mess, get hopped up on consuming the chaos energy." All of this was said matter-of-factly, as if demons running around was a perfectly normal sight.
"I suppose all children are sometimes imps. Little demons." The man seemed stuck on the rest of that statement, however, as if he was unsure exactly how to proceed on whether she knew that child or how casually she considered them "obnoxious." This only lasted a second, though, before he chucked that inconvenient and worrisome thought into a bin and tapped near his left eye conspiratorially. "Don't worry, you have me! I'm anti-chaos, certified — well, in one dimension. I'm Arthur."
"Yes..." Illyana responded somewhat hesitantly. Probably best to let Arthur keep his idea of children instead of literal demons tonight. She'd make sure they were rounded up tomorrow if they'd decided to linger. "I am Lyana." Well, a partial truth. She'd pronounced it with a bit of a rush, the sound coming out more 'Lana' than 'Yana', but it was sufficiently close to not repeat herself. "Only one dimension? How many have you been in?"
"One more than I imagined, let me tell you, Lana." He somehow managed to pronounce her name exactly as she had said it, rushed and all. Yet his genuine energy invited absolutely no doubt that this "Arthur" would dream of lying. "But I'm the worst host. What did you need to know?"
Illyana shook her head. "Nothing that can't wait for my contact tomorrow," she replied honestly. A slight jostle from behind alerted her to the small line starting to form, and she gave Arthur a small, genuine smile, drawn in by the bright energy he radiated. She handed over another crumpled bill. "Another worm cake, please? It was nice to meet you."
"Consider it my pleasure, Yana. I've always been more for treats vs. tricks." He handed her two gummy cakes, just for good measure, with a wink. "Happy Halloween.”

Moment of Awesome - Arthur Centino/Longshot:
When a night at a fight club event turns into fleeing the cops, Arthur reveals his real skills as a getaway driver.
"One-twenty? Kyle, my man, you should have led with that." Arthur's face, illuminated by the boring dash, broke into a fierce grin. It was a delicate balance managing the plasticy ergonomics of a Subaru, a horse not exactly designed for speed no matter what laid under the hood. The blonde man didn't let this fact stop him, however, as he hit the gas hard.
"Sarah. Can I call you Sarah?" This was almost casual as the man hit a turn sharply through a red light. Several other cars screeched behind them in protest in the wake of a suddenly upturned intersection. "I used to do this for a living."
His eyes were glowing now, face lit by his own lucky light, as he popped onto a curb to bypass some traffic piled up in front of them. By this point he had graduated from loosely following Sarah's directions to just shaking their tails.
Dramatically.
Oddly, though, there were no sounds of squealing metal from collisions or car wrecks.
"Where are we going?"
"There's a garage on Austin. If we can get there, the staff will cover for us. But I need you to listen to my directions, there's neighborhoods over here we definitely don't--shit!" She yelped and put a hand up against the dash to steady herself as the car unexpectedly took a turn. "Turn left!"
Kyle grunted as the car went left and he had the combined weight of America Chavez and Gabriel Cohuelo slide into him. "I suddenly understand people who get car sick..." He groaned. "I want pancakes after this."
Gabriel snorted as he tried to slide toward the other side of the car. "You're supposed to stare at a spot at the horizon, which is easier to do when—" He braced himself on the car door as Arthur made an abrupt lane change. "Well, you know."
For his part, Arthur turned his head completely to focus all of his attention on Sarah. "I am listening to only you. Lay it on me."
Now, this was still paired with an extremely sympathetic smile, but the fact that his eyes were most certainly glowing full tilt certainly made it eerie. Or the fact that he was also, right now, accomplishing a perfect 360 degree slide into a multi-lane road across a full lane of traffic. With his eyes half-locked on Sarah and most definitely not on the road.
His smile never broke as they straightened out and the tension ebbed. "Tell me where to go and we're there."

Moment of Awesome - Arthur Centino/Longshot:
During a hike with Maya Lincoln-Lopez, things go terribly wrong and it's up to Arthur to get help.
Arthur stopped for a minute, taking a deep breath. “I just love getting lost in nature, even though you can’t really get lost. Nature finds you right back.”
They had ventured plenty deep enough, but at this point, the two of them pretty much knew these woods. The pause turned into a concerted stare off into the distance, and he put a single finger up. “Wait for it. Just…”
A red fox and its kit break out from behind a tree and sprint quickly behind another tree, playing chase.
Maya took a moment to watch the foxes, smiling at their antics. She knew this forest had a variety of animal life but she’d only seen kits once before.
“Did you see that I joined the X-men?” She asked finally, unable to keep it contained any longer. She didn’t want to let anyone down but she knew she could do some good on the other team. “I’ve been meaning to tell everyone, about leaving X-Factor. I can’t do both and school, so I need to choose.”
Arthur's smile softened as he took his eyes off the foxes and looked over to Maya, and he repositioned slightly to ensure that she could see his face. The smile never broke. "I do talk with Scott, Maya. We — Me, Lorna, Alex — were just wondering when you would tell us. We're so," and he leaned in to emphasize this, "excited for you! How exciting! Action! Adventure!"
“I guess that makes sense,” Maya replied with a wry expression. Here she’d been fretting about whether they’d see her moving on as a defection and a reflection on them and they’d just been excited for her. “How hasn’t QQ drowned you all in the bath yet? You’re all way too chipper.”
"Hey now. Q isn't here, Maya. We — me, Alex, Lorna, everybody — care about you. What's got you so excited about X-People-ing?"
“Apart from getting to punch bad guys in the nose?” Maya smiled at Arthur, crouching as one of the Kits decided it was playtime with its mother, who was having none of it. “I’m not really the type of person who sits behind a desk, mostly. It’s not that I don’t get investigation is important, even in the X-men but I like the idea of being the first person into something, protecting people.”
His eyes crinkled a little as he shrugged, understanding. "It is important to try all the things! Punching, helping, even desk sitting. I guess the all-leather getup too. Oooh, and the mystery." At this point, Arthur was getting off-topic and stopped himself. "You're always welcome to come help or hang out if you want, still. You're part of the XFi family."
"I'm not likely to disappear or anything, not completely. That'd give QQ too much peace and quiet, and think what he'd do with all that?" Maya's eyes had softened into a true smile and she grinned up at Arthur before turning back to watching the kits, relaxed now that she'd gotten her true mission out of the way, and content to just enjoy the day. She'd always felt happier out here, and not just because buildings with any amount of history tended to have 'feelings' to them. "So, anything else in your bag of urk..."
Maya's words cut off as her hands reached for her head, her fingers digging as she clawed at the sudden pain. She couldn't reach it though, couldn't stop it. All she could do was scream.
An appropriate reaction to this may have been a blank stare or a sudden what, but — given the randomness of his general mutation and the even more general wtfery that living around the X-people instilled or, quite possibly, having lived through a lot at this point — Arthur's first reaction wasn't either of those things, but instead to immediately support Maya as she reacted. "Woah now, keep breathing. Deep breaths.
Serious-faced, Arthur did the same as he worked to best lower Maya onto her back as he fumbled for his phone. "This is one of those 'stress screams' is it?" He knew it wasn't, but levity seemed appropriate.

Moment of Awesome - Arthur Centino/Longshot:
Things go badly wrong during an X-Factor stakeout of a church and Arthur's optimistic view on life takes a beating.
The entire room had gone very, very still as the echo of gunshots in the small area faded away. Alex had frozen, club still out, as he tried to process what the hell had just happened. The parishioners who hadn't yet been taken out by Alex or Arthur or ran away were staring, wide-eyed, at the man they had been following. Alex slowly let his arm drop to his side and turned; the first thing he saw was the gun, and he didn't hesitate to slam a glowing fist into priest's arm. He howled, dropping the gun as he went down - it was entirely possible Alex had broken more than his arm. He didn't care. He kicked the gun away, just to be safe. It slid across the floor, stopping near another pool of blood. He walked slowly toward it, his heart jumping into his throat. It was Anne's mother - the one who had started all this. The bigot who had abandoned her own daughter and willingly brought her into this room to be tortured. He looked at the table and saw Anne, in a similar state as her mother. Then looked around the room, seeing the one or two people who had been to scared to run, in addition to the unconscious bodies on the floor.
"Tie 'em up," he muttered, hooking his club back onto his belt and looking down at the sniveling priest on the floor. "And what do we do with you?"
"No, no, no," the other blonde man seemed to have missed Alex's directive, and instead was scrambling over the body of the mother, with his eyes darting frantically between the fallen woman and her daughter. It had been very unlucky for that wild one shot to hit and kill two people: the kid through the neck, the mother into the heart. Luck. Arthur's lip quibbled at that thought, as he looked desperately for any signs of life. Maybe they weren't dead. This wasn't how this was supposed to go down. This wasn't what he did.
Hope had taken the moment to carefully close Anne's eyes, carefully locking down her emotions one by one. Her eyes were ice cold when she approached approached the priest. "I guess we have to let the authorities deal with him, but how about we call QQ beforehand? He'd have some idea's on what to do with this piece of scum before we hand him over." Her voice was even colder than her eyes.
Tempting. Oh, it was tempting. "If I thought he could get here in time... too bad we don't have any teleporters on hand." Alex shook his head, running his fingers through his hair. "We should look around before the police get here. And not take too long to call."
His eyes fell on the bodies again, and he gritted his teeth. No love lost for the woman who had abandoned her daughter and then wormed her way back into her life just to hand her over to a cult. But Anne... she'd deserved better. Better than this.
It took a second for Arthur, still bent over near the mother, to realize that the others were talking. He blinked up at them, his eyes scanning the room in its aftermath. Two casualties. One injured priest. Seven unconscious or subdued extremists, with another five or so who had ran. They were on a timer. Still... "No. That's not what we do. We," and he paused here to look at the girl, "Help people. Let the police handle this."
He got up, brushing himself off in an attempt to collect his cool and what had to come next. "All we can do now is let her dad know."
