This beach holds special significance to me, it is a place visited multiple times whilst still living near London. I would soak myself in the natural & man-made beauty, connecting with the history there. I wanted to create a bold, vibrant painting to celebrate these things, hence this art was born. I found time on this beach so peaceful, healing & energising- I've tried to capture all that positivity in this painting. #artheals30in30 (Day 30 of 30) - 'Spiritual Warrior' 💚 a large painting on canvas celebrating LOVE. ❤ The story behind the painting? When I started painting this portrait the woman featured was volunteering in the evenings, working with vulnerable women on the streets alongside her paid job.  I wanted to celebrate the genuine love, kindness and compassion expressed by her. I painted two portraits of her, I preferred the other and shelved this one. Years later I revisited this painting and went crazy with pattern and decoration which was heavy with symbolism representing compassion / care, insight and action. More details? The silver swirling pattern on the right of the face indicates compassion and care by emulating tears and the busyness suggests action.  The orange decoration around the eye on the left is similar to a target mark and also a traditional sun, the target link suggests insight, focus and action.  The sun link indicates light, love and nourishment / growth.  The use of silver / aluminium represents the spiritual in my work and the back ground pattern and dripping green paint signify faith and the spiritual as well as strength.  The decoration on the face also links in with traditional face paint and war paint which suggests focus, action and sacrifice (title: ’Spiritual Warrior’). 80cm x 60cm x 2cm paint and aluminium on canvas. #artheals30in30 (Day 29 of 30) - 🐾'Inspired by Frida's Honesty and Strength' ⭐ a mixed media painting on card celebrating Frida Kahlo's positive characteristics and her impact on me. ❤ The story behind the painting? In the run up to International Women's Day I want to explore & celebrate heroines & the inspiration they give me. Frida's willingness to display her vulnerability and pain publicly through art was ground breaking, it had a huge impact on many people, and still does. I think her extreme honesty alongside her resilience demonstrates deep strength. Here there are some clear Frida Kahlo references (particularly in relation to her piece 'Self-portrait with Thorn Necklace and Hummingbird') mixed in my own response. I could have painted myself as her, imitating one of her famous self portraits though I was drawn to visually exploring & celebrating the inspiration she gives (it also avoids copyright & rights of publicity issues!). My artwork celebrates Frida Kahlo's impact. In my artwork I have featured my black cat (Bu 😍), cats often symbolise rebirth, survival and healing, which are the themes here, hence the gaze being on the cat. In Mexico (Frida's homeland), black cats are seen as unlucky tho here in the UK it's the opposite. I have placed a gold dove in my artwork which symbolises love, peace, freedom, hope and faith. For me, all of those are linked with strength and honesty and interconnected with healing, rebirth and survival. #artheals30in30 (Day 28 of 30) - My mural & I, 😁 this mural celebrates helping, healing & transformation. ❤ The story behind the painting / mural? This mural commission was for the outdoor area of a charity that works with homeless and vulnerable adults. The focus was helping, healing and transformation. The couple on the steps explicitly celebrates helping. The caterpillars and kintsugi butterflies along with the decorative patterns celebrate healing and transformation. I loved working on this project, the themes make my heart sing ❤🎶 and I truly appreciate the positive impact my art has had and is having. Kintsugi butterflies? Kintsugi is a Japanese art form which involved putting broken ceramics back together with gold / silver. I'm passionate about healing and love the kintsugi visual reference of cracks still showing but creating something stronger and even more beautiful. As such I created kintsugi butterflies & have experimented with it in portraits. The darker background details were added because of the difficulties involved with healing; the hardship, struggles and pain that is changed. #artheals30in30 (Day 23 of 30) - 'Getting Back' - 🐚 a large painting on canvas celebrating home & belonging. ❤ The story behind the painting? It is a self portrait painted whilst I lived near London and was planning a move to the Isle of Man where I had spent a lot of time as a child. It's hard to describe in words (which is partly why I painted it), but I was exploring the pull we feel to places and how some places feel like home and other don't, how we can feel we 'belong' to geographical locations and in or out of nature. The shells in the hair and turquoise paint represents the island with its many beaches and turquoise seas. The shells also link to baptism. I created the large, interesting hairstyle to engage viewers more and to emphasise the root like quality of my dreads (rooted in a place, family tree). It's not so well known dreadlocks are also associated with Native Americans. I have Native American heritage, I was exploring this too as I realised I have a strong pull towards nature and the natural, which is a strong theme in Native American culture. I love self portraiture & I'm especially inspired by Frida Kahlo's self portraits. Painting yourself is easier as you know your face, you always have a model, you don't have to worry about offending yourself and you can express your internal world / thoughts / feelings easily. Self portraiture is rather vulnerable though and can come across as narcissistic, which the majority of the time it's not (certainly not for me). ❤ The original art and fine art prints are available. I used a lot of dull darker tones in this painting to show faith in all things, in difficult times as well as good times. Some view faith as blind belief and lost if not that, though I think (and have experienced) sometimes faith is full of doubt and being clung to by fingertips. I was experimenting with different materials and trying to show the unseen at the time I created this portrait. This mixed media painting celebrates the spiritual. I wanted to celebrate positive change and transformation; the process involved can be difficult and challenging though the rewards are significant. The red crossing lines suggest difficulties and hardship as well as looking like rays of light spreading out from the woman which implies positivity and enlightenment. The strong contrast in lighting and the warm yellow highlights on the woman's skin suggests goodness and growth. The red glitter dots create a decorative aura around her.
