The Kit of a Modern Creative

It’s sparse...

There's no getting around the fact that the sketchbook will always remain the most vital item in the creative's pack. Yet the fruits of the digital age have allowed us to assign the roles of a sketchbook to something that fits cosily in one pocket and happens to be part of our person almost by necessity. Why would the modern creative scrawl notes in a notebook when they could simply record a voice memo on their smartphone? Why sketch architecture when one is free to immediately take photographs of the subject from multiple perspectives for later review? Of course the matter becomes philosophical at such a point but it's worth considering your smartphone to be one of the most important tools at your disposal. As I tread through my day I sporadically record notes on mine. Words are often more important to my creative process than sketches. And you should be regularly taking notes and taking stock of them; it's important to never let an idea slip into the ether, unless it deserves to.

During the digital illustration stage I often upload rough drafts of my work to a cloud drive in order to view them on a portable device. With a handful of swipes and taps I can play with the drawings, adjust their properties and observe the work from a variety of angles. I play with filters and take screenshots of concepts I want to explore further. Simply seeing the illustrations on a different screen is quite often enough to highlight their mistakes or where there is at least room for improvement.

I use an Asus notebook computer, Nyoko. The battery no longer retains a charge. In order to use the machine it must be plugged into a wall socket and if unplugged will shut down her components without warning. Naturally, under my ownership the notebook has been bashed, bent and battered but the thing is maintained immaculately out with the realm of hardware. Like clockwork, I defragment and optimise the drives, strip the storage of unwanted files and reorder my work. And of course I replace the masking tape that conceals the webcam lens.

Nyoko is lightweight and compact. Illustration can be, and often is, carried out on any surface within arm's reach of a wall socket. My partner's vanity table, with a slight reshuffle, continues to serve as an important component in my makeshift studio. Not only is it tucked away from potential distractions, it smells like a rose garden. But the landscape is so important that it isn't important at all. If Bukowski can write poetry on Skid Row and Rowling can write Harry Potter in an Edinburgh cafe then I'm convinced that art can be made anywhere.

As a general rule I treat my equipment as a backpacker would treat theirs; all unnecessary weight is discarded with the aim of being portable as well as durable. As the demand for my kit's efficiency grows so too must the kit. But this doesn't always mean adding to the equipment but rather looking at the tools I currently own in an innovative way and pondering how they could further contribute to the creative process.

Forgot to share this beautiful sketchbook I found at the PBNJ indoor flea market last weekend! I picked up a lot of awesome little items. I loved that Joni and I scooped up some art supplies for dirt cheap and hopefully we will be expensing our art adventures a little more with these new pick ups. Alright finally decided to start improving my art skills again! Ive saved a bunch of art toturials that ill follow

I dont have any of my digital artgear here in my hometown so that part will have to wait until next year, but Ill do some traditional art tutorials in the meantime

I'm just pretty tired of feeling like I'm improvising my way through everything, and although I have studied with art teachers for 7 years, the last time I had an art teacher was in 2015
