ArtEZ Arnhem Finals 2017 Faces on exhibit at Dudok Just like last year JW Kaldenbach & Mimi Berlin got commissioned to portray the graduate bachelor students of ArtEZ Arnhem (University of Fine Arts situated in Arnhem, The Netherlands) and create an exhibition out of these portraits. “That unimaginable new world of fashion is what keeps me exploring.”

Van Herpen designs fashion for haute couture. At school she quickly felt limited by fabric, as she wanted to create the garments with the materials of which she created her designs. This forced her to experiment with other materials, and later on to develop materials that approached her concept the closest. She has been praised for pioneering the use of 3D printing for fashion. Although she had been making clothes since she was a child, Herpen wanted to be a ballerina. It wasn’t until the last year of high school when she took elective Art she realised she wanted to do fashion. She graduated from fashion design at ArtEZ in the Netherlands and a year later launched her own label, quickly catching attention at runways and now produces two collections a year. Since she has won multiple awards, designed for Haute Couture Paris Fashion Week, and finally collaborated with the likes of Beyoncé and Lady Gaga. Van Herpen combines the most traditional and the most radical materials, and construction methods to portray her concepts. She calls this design ethos “New Couture.” Herpen is normally inspired by other creators, for example her Aeriform collection looks at the anatomy of air. She drew inspiration from the Danish underwater artists Between Music who challenge the relationship between the body and its usual air surroundings, by placing themselves in water instead. She is heavily research based and from this will begin designing. In an interview with Vogue she explains “My collection process is a mess, to be honest, but I prefer it this way. I don’t keep journals, I don’t draw, and I don’t work from mood boards. The process is partly happening inside my head and partly happening intuitively while molding on a mannequin. I try to avoid [having] my design process become controlled with too many ideas that come from logic—it’s too predictable. After molding, a new idea comes, and the adjustment process starts; that can go forward and backward hundreds of times. Along that painful path of trial and error all logic becomes chaos, and often in the midst of that chaos the perfect material is waiting to be found.” In essence the development of her ideas comes from simply the process of making itself not planning. Iris documents all her concepts and work through photography and text on her official website (http://www.irisvanherpen.com/) and also has a YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCesPIV0EchUfPPps3qhLowQ/videos) which she uploads videos of runway events and also process videos all of which have a sleek style.

Overall I believe that her work resembles an illustrative style relative to my own style, I enjoy her process, and believe she documents it in an organic and sleek way through media.

ArtEZ Fashion Show 2017

Yesterday we, Mimi Blogger Team, went to see the annual show of ArtEZ Arnhem’s fashion design department, which was held at Musis Sacrum, one of Arnheim’s cultural centers. Musis Sacrum (just love that name) has restrooms larger than our headoffices, with, very high ceilings covered in travertine (but that’s another story…) The first and second year students opened this fashionshow with experimental designs and after Collectie Arnhem 2017, designed by the 3rd year students, we got to see the graduation collections. This year a group of 19 Bachelor students will be graduating; congratulations to all! As we took a peek backstage after the show, we noticed that the detailing of the designs are pretty high standard; fabrics (and leather) are often embellished and finished by hand, also the of craft knitting, printing and embroidery isn’t lost on these students.

Lichting 2017 Fashion Design Award goes to Lizzy Stuyfzand

Yesterday (7/14/2017), on the second day of Amsterdam Fashionweek (MBFWA) Mini Berlin Blogger Team went to see the Lichting show (the annual contest for 14 graduating Dutch fashion design students) Lizzy Stuyfzand was the winner of the Lichting Award, for most promising talent, which is €10,000! Congratulations!! Ms Stuyfzand graduated last month at ArtEZ Arnhem with her menswear collection “Call me magpie” (see more about that here on this blog)

The second award, €3000; is ‘The Audience’s Favorite’ went to Sarah Bruylant of AMFI. The students participated to this lovely show were: Roos Boshart, Rachael Cheong, Annebel de Kok, Miro Hämäläinen, Karlijn Krijger and Ninamounah Langestraat (read more about them here lichting.nl) The winners truly deserved the prices they got, but we also rooted for Ninamounah Langestraat (Gerrit Rietveld Academy) her part of the Lichting show really stood out to us because of it’s very strong personality.
