The Diva of Design: Elsa Peretti
“Elsa brought out all these things—the bone bracelet I remember best. Everything was so sensual, so sexy. I just loved it. It was different from anything I’d ever seen, and I’d seen a lot.” – Liza Minelli
On March 18, 2021, the design world lost an artist who was as elegant and unique as her iconic jewelry designs, when Elsa Peretti “died at her home in Sant Martí Vell, Spain…. For 50 years, her designs inspired countless women and left an indelible mark on the jewelry world”(1). She made her mark in the 1970s as many young women were rejecting traditional homemaker roles and striving for successful careers of their own instead. Elsa Peretti designs resonated with this generation of women, spurning the fussy ornamentation of their mothers’ generation, but still yearning for beauty and elegant sophistication.

Peretti’s Early Days
Elsa Peretti was born on May 1, 1940 in Florence, Italy to a wealthy family. Her father “Ferdinando Peretti founded Anonima Petroli Italiana (API), a large Italian oil company”(2). Young Elsa received education in Rome and Switzerland. When she was twenty-one, the strong-willed Elsa broke with her family and “as a result, she was cut off from any financial support”(3). To make her own way, she worked first as a French teacher and later as a skiing instructor in the Swiss Alps. She returned to Rome to study interior design, and eventually worked for architect Dado Torrigiani (2).
Peretti Becomes a Successful Model
In the 1960s, Elsa Peretti was drawn to the intellectual life in Barcelona and began her modeling career there. In 1968 she went to New York City on the advice of her modelling agency (3); however, she arrived in the city “with a black eye from her [former] boyfriend who opposed of the move”(1). In New York she met designer Halston “whom she met while he was still a milliner at Bergdorf Goodman”(2) and became one of the regular group of models who he favored (3). The pair would become close friends and sometimes collaborators. Their relationship has been dramatized in the recent Netflix mini-series, “Halston.”
Peretti Finds Lasting Success as a Jewelry Designer
The following year, Peretti began designing jewelry, “She created pieces for herself at first, then expanded to” friends and fashion designers she had met through her work. Her first design was a “inspired by a small bud vase found in a flea market”(2). She began designing jewelry for Halston in 1971,(2) then her work really got noticed. That same year her work appeared in Vogue Magazine, and Ms. Peretti received “the 1971 Coty Award for jewelry design. In 1972, the New York City Department store Bloomingdales “opened a dedicated Peretti boutique”(1). During this time, Peretti and Halston “were the center of a fun, clubby clique that included [designer Giorgio] Sant´Angelo, the illustrator Joe Eula, Victor Hugo (Halston’s boyfriend), designer Stephen Burrows and Andy Warhol”(3).

1974 was a milestone year in Elsa Peretti’s career. “Halston introduced her to Walter Hoving, the then CEO of Tiffany”(3). Hoving hired Ms. Peretti to design jewelry in sterling silver – “the first time Tiffany had sold jewelry in that material in 25 years”(4). Ms. Peretti’s designs were organic, sensual, and embodied a sense of fun that appealed to younger women. Since the silver designs were more affordable, “in a break from tradition, women were shopping for themselves rather than being gifted jewelry by men” (5). “But, the affordable prices never detracted from their beauty or desirability”(1).

Elsa Peretti’s Iconic Work
One of Elsa Peretti’s most famous designs is the Bone Cuff, which many have compared to the cuffs worn by the comic book female superhero Wonder Woman (1). Like the Bone Cuff much of Peretti’s “minimalist, biomorphic designs were inspired by simple, natural things” 1: The Bean Pendant, The Scorpion Necklace, Open Heart, High Tide, Starfish and Snake among others. For Tiffany & Co., Ms. Peretti also designed dinnerware, pens, key rings, and ashtrays (4,6). The Thumbprint dishes and bowls make up her most successful dinnerware collection (6).

In 1977 Ms. Peretti’s distinctive designs garnered her the cover of Newsweek magazine. By the end of the 1970s Ms. Peretti was Tiffany’s star designer, and “designed over thirty collections for” (6) the company. Today “Peretti’s products account for roughly 10% of Tiffany’s sales. So important is her work to Tiffany’s bottom line that they paid her 47 million plus royalties to renew her contract in 2012 for the next 20 years” (3).
Elsa Peretti’s Life in the Fast Lane
Elsa Peretti’s “personal life always grabbed attention” (4). Although never married, Ms. Peretti was in a serious relationship with photographer Hemut Newton during the 1970s. One of Newton’s most famous images is that of Ms. Peretti posing on a Manhattan apartment terrace wearing a version of a Playboy Bunny costume (2). Of course, “The costume was her idea,”(1) for a Halloween party (2).
During the late 1970s, along with designer pal Halston, Peretti was a frequent patron of Studio 54, “the storied Manhattan disco that attracted celebrities like Andy Warhol, Bianca Jagger, [and] Cher”(4). Ms. Peretti’s exploits at the club were legendary, one night after a misunderstanding with Studio 54 co-owner Steve Rubell, Peretti smashed a bottle of vodka on the floor (4).

Falling Out with Designer Halston
Peretti’s alcohol and drug use, particularly cocaine, increased as the 1970s wore on, however, her partying never affected her professional work (4). To complicate matters, the more success Peretti gained, the more her strained relationship with Halston became. “Things came to a head during a… dinner at Halston’s townhouse. The night ended with Peretti throwing her sable coat from Halston into the fire”(3). Soon after this episode Peretti left New York to live and work in her adopted home of Sant Martí Vell in Catalonia, Spain (3).
Elsa Peretti’s Philathropic Work
In 1977 Elsa Perretti founded the Nando Peretti Foundation, “with the inheritance from her father, with whom she reconciled just months before his death” (4). The foundation funds projects that support the environment, social inclusion, social welfare, human rights and the rule of law, education, scientific research, and arts and cultural history (7). The organization “was renamed the Nando and Elsa Peretti Foundation” in 2015 (2).

Elsa Peretti’s Lasting Legacy
Over the years celebrities Liza Minelli, Sophia Loren, Diana Ross, Sarah Jessica Parker, and tennis champion Maria Sharapova have worn jewelry designed by Elsa Peretti (4). “Ms. Peretti’s designs are in several permanent collections, including those of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the British Museum in London, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston” (4).
During her career Ms. Peretti was awarded the President’s Fellow Award by Rhode Island School of Design in 1981 and 1996 Designer of the Year by the Council of Fashion Designers of American Accessories. Honors awarded to the designer include the 2013 National Prize of Culture by the Catalan Government, the order of Merit of the Italian Republic, and the Order of Malta (1).
In 1990 an exhibition of Elsa Peretti’s work was held at the Fashion Institute of Technology. In 2001 the same institution awarded the designer an honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree (6), and Tiffany & Co. established the “Peretti Professorship in Jewelry Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the first endowed professorship in the history of FIT”(6).
Although many of Elsa Peretti’s designs were produced over 50 years ago, they still “maintain their style and beauty”(6) and are remain popular with women all over the world. However Elsa Peretti is remembered, whether as jewelry designer, fashion model, saavy business woman, outrageous celebrity, or philanthropist, this remarkable woman and her prolific work will be admired and acknowledged for many years to come.

Attendance Tops 3,000 at National Money Show ®
The American Numismatic Association’s (ANA) 2019 National Money Show® in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, welcomed a total of 3,002 people to the three-day event, held March 28-30 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. “The Pittsburgh convention was very successful thanks to the combined efforts of the great ANA staff and the tremendous support provided by PAN [Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists] and its volunteers,” said ANA President Gary Adkins. “The show was well attended and the venue overlooking the river and skyline was incredible.”
ANA President Gary Adkins addresses attendees during the PAN-hosted dinner to kick off the National Money Show.
During the show’s opening ceremonies on Thursday morning, President Adkins presented National Money Show Host Chair Pat McBride with the ANA Goodfellow Award in recognition of his service. Adkins also recognized the host club, the Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists and its president, Tom Uram, with the Lewis S. Werner Host Club Award.
The event featured 180 companies buying and selling coins, currency and related items; a wide range of numismatic educational presentations led by notable speakers; a three-session sale by Kagin’s Auctions; and exhibits of priceless rarities from private collections and the American Numismatic Association’s Money Museum in Colorado Springs.
The week kicked off on Wednesday, March 27 with a dinner hosted by PAN at the Five-Star Diamond Award-Winning LeMont Restaurant, known for its spectacular view of Pittsburgh from atop Mt. Washington. United States Mint Director David Ryder gave the keynote presentation on his efforts to revitalize the Mint, including an increase in marketing coin collecting.
A major draw for numismatists and the general public alike were the collector exhibits and the Museum Showcase. On display were a 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of a mere five struck, and a Class III 1804 silver dollar, one of eight known. Also featured was a 1943 Lincoln cent erroneously struck on a bronze planchet, and a world-class case filled with historic Pennsylvania paper money. A 1933 Indian Head eagle (gold $10) on display was a bona fide showstopper.
The Kids Zone offered youngsters a plethora of activities to engage them in coin collecting, including a Treasure Trivia game where they learned about numismatics and earned prizes as they explored the bourse floor in search of answers to trivia questions. A Young Collectors Corner also debuted this year, offering basic information about the hobby.
Former United States Mint Chief Engraver Don Everhart was the guest of honor at the ANA Legacy Series on Thursday afternoon, March 28. During the interview, moderated by Barbara Gregory, editor-in-chief of The Numismatist , attendees learned about his early years, professional challenges, and crowning achievements in the world of numismatic art and design. Everhart elaborated on his decades-long career during his “Money Talks” presentation, “Don Everhart: A Career in Coin Design,” on Friday, March 29. Nearly a dozen free Money Talks presentations were offered at the event, highlighting historically significant events, artistic vision and numismatic objects from around the globe.
Eleven of the 14 individuals who have received the necessary nominations for the 2019 ANA Board of Governors election participated in the Candidates Forum on Friday, March 29 to answer questions and express their views on a number of topics. (Video of the forum can be viewed on money.org/election .) In what can be described as an unusual election, two individuals are running for president, two for vice president and ten candidates are competing for seven governor positions. “This election has the largest number of candidates running that I can remember,” noted former ANA Board President Jeff Garrett. “The election is particularly important this year with so many seats being contested,” he said. “I urge everyone to watch the forum once it is posted.”
Kagin’s Auctions of Tiburon, California, served as the official auctioneer of the 2019 National Money Show. The multi-session sale featured a variety of interesting and important numismatic properties, from colonials, encased postage stamps and pioneer gold to tokens, medals and patterns. Total prices realized (with a 20% buyer’s premium) was $2.5 million, including:
$336,000 for a unique $10 Treasury note from the War of 1812 (Friedberg TN-14b) part of the Joel Anderson Collection of Treasury Notes. The 16 lots realized a total of $561,720.

$180,000 for an 1860 Clark, Gruber & Co. Pikes Peak $20 gold coin with a reeded edge, Rarity 6+, certified Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) “Graffiti [About Uncirculated] Detail.” One of nine known.

$28,800 for an 1888 $3 gold coin, graded PCGS Proof-65 Cameo.
  Pittsburgh Show Attendance
According to ANA Executive Director Kim Kiick, attendance at the Pittsburgh National Money Show was relatively slow on Thursday and Friday, but more than a thousand people registered on Saturday. “Pittsburgh is a working town and as such, most people couldn’t get to the show until Saturday,” she said. Tom Hallenbeck of Hallenbeck Coin Gallery agreed. “The momentum really picked up later in the week,” he said. “We stayed to the very end and it paid off for us. Our sales were great.”Total attendance was 3,002, reflected as follows:
1,796 general public
708 ANA members
32 volunteers and staff
466 dealers and their assistants, representing 180 companies at 192 tables
  Five-Year National Money Show Statistics
Year City Attendance (MAKE INTO A TABLE MOLLY PLEASE)
2019 Pittsburgh 3,002
2018 Irving 2,671
2017 Orlando 2,516
2016 Dallas 2,585
2015 Portland 4,592
The next ANA convention is the 2019 World’s Fair of Money® to be held August 13-17 in Chicago (Rosemont), Illinois, at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center. The 2020 National Money Show is slated for February 27-29 at the Cobb Galleria Centre in Atlanta, Georgia. The ANA Board of Governors will be selecting the 2021 National Money Show site in May.
  ANA Board of Governors Meeting
The ANA Board of Governors met in open session on Saturday, March 30 to review and approve the IRS Form 990 and Fiscal Year 2018 audited financial statement prepared by Waugh & Goodwin, LLP, and to receive an update on ANA financials from Treasurer Larry Baber.
Fiscal Year 2018 expenses were $5,806,161, of which $4,710,294 were directly related to ANA programs (conventions, magazine, education, museum, library, etc.) and $1,095,867 were for support services (marketing, fundraising, membership, development, administration).
“Our investment in the Ben E. Keith Corp. had an exceptional year with an increase in value of over $8.5 million,” Baber reported. “With assets of over $84 million we can continue to provide benefits to our members and the numismatic hobby.”
“The ANA has a very strong financial footing,” said President Adkins, “and a portion of the Keith funds can continue to be invested in the future of numismatic education. These amazing resources will be utilized prudently and judiciously to improve the ANA’s mission and strategic goals, while advancing the Association’s continued relevance and leadership.”
The ANA’s Fiscal Year 2018 audited financial statement and IRS Form 990 are available for review online at money.org/financial-reports.
The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered, nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging the study and collection of coins and related items. The ANA helps its 25,000 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of educational and outreach programs, as well as its museum, library, publications and conventions. Houstonian Cindi Rose is on the cutting edge of silhouette artistry
Text and photos by Mara Soloway
You’re either born an artist or not.” Renowned silhouette artist and native Houstonian Cindi Harwood Rose knew that she was at a very young age. “Around age 2, I picked up a pair of rounded scissors and etched a relief of a face into the yellow paint on the wall. As a child I was drawing portraits, nature and animals and painting in tempura,” she said. This early understanding of art principles and the consistent desire to create has continued throughout her life, leading to success in a unique art form. It helped that her mother, Doris Harwood, was an artist, architectural designer and paper-cutter.
She began papercutting shapes at 14, and at 16 she cut her first profile portrait. Soon Cindi started working at the art concession at Houston’s famed Astroworld, which was owned by Disney. Her sister Bonny answered an ad for a cashier and recommended Cindi be hired as a portrait artist. Her interview introduced her to what she saw as chauvinism in the art world. The interviewer demanded that she draw him, which she did. When he showed Cindi the work of one of the world’s few silhouette artists, who was working at the concession, she said, “I can do that.” He didn’t believe her and again demanded to see her create on the spot. She did. At least the man had some sense – he immediately fired the other artist, telling Cindi to begin working as his new silhouette artist the next day.
Cindi’s talent and proficiency at making silhouettes, portraits and watercolors led to bigger things. “I did so many at Astroworld,” she recalled. “Jess Rubio, the owner of the Astroworld and Disney art concessions,  flew me to Disneyland, and I did more silhouettes of the guests than the artist there. From then on this was my summer job and my Christmas job. When I finished college I went off to Disney World to cut silhouettes for one year, working 14-hour days five days a week.”
Cindi has strong opinions on what good art is versus what she refers to as chewing gum art. She doesn’t want to fit in with an art scene like the one she encountered when she double-majored and graduated with honors in art and journalism at the University of Texas at Austin in the 1970s. She found it too chauvinistic with too much emphasis on fitting in through drug use and sex. She refused to conform to that standard.
Cindi had graduated from Bellaire High School magna cum laude and had won many awards in art and poetry. It didn’t occur to her that she could apply to other schools for scholarships because she was already an employed artist. She ended up at UT because her parents insisted she pay for her college degree from her silhouette summer earnings. She would have preferred to go to a school the caliber of Parsons School of Art, NYU or Pratt. Cindi later studied sculpture at Glassell School of Art, ceramic art at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass and Impressionism oil painting in Paris, where she found encouragement and respect.
As a journalist, she was the society writer for Houston Magazine, and wrote freelance for the Houston Chronicle. She also won beauty contests that landed her with a modeling/acting agency. She modeled for Mary Anne Duffey and Neal Hammil, and starred on Fox Houston TV on the comedy Captain Harold’s Theater of the Sky and a weekly exercise program. Cindi also had speaking parts in movies and in national commercials, earned her SAG-AFTRA card, and starred in dinner theater plays.
When she was 26, she took ownership of the art concession at Astroworld until she married at 32. “That was a big milestone for me at that age. I had 40 employees. I supported myself and owned my house when I met my husband.”
Cindi married her husband, plastic surgeon Franklin Rose M.D., in 1982. They have two children, Erica and Ben,  and two grandchildren. She took several years off from cutting silhouettes to raise her children, work for area charities and continue her writing career, although she did cut silhouettes here and there.
During this period, Cindi’s late sister Holly, who had also inherited her mother’s art talents and was a silhouette artist,  developed stage 4 breast cancer. While Holly was still alive, Cindi and Franklin created The Holly Rose Ribbon Foundation in 2005. The nonprofit provides free reconstructive surgery to post-breast cancer patients and scholarship funds for students who have a lost a parent to cancer. Cindi raises funds through silhouette-making events; Franklin provides the reconstructions. They also cheer patients at Texas Children’s Hospital and provide scholarships to children who lost a parent to cancer for higher education or a specialty career. Holly passed away in 2012.
Cindi found making silhouettes for the foundation to be healing and restarted her  silhouette career again in 2010. She has calculated that she has made her intricate paper cutouts for more than one million people in the 40 total years she has made them. Silhouette portraiture is an ages-old art form of cutting a profile on black paper. The more talented the silhouette artist, the more the persona is shown. Cindi approaches each silhouette with her artist’s intuition. No mass of dreadlocks, curls or long beard intimidates her. One of her signature elements is the cutting of interior detail – an earring, shadows in the hair, folds of clothing. She also has a flair for eyelashes.
“If you think about it, it’s a contour drawing – it’s like drawing a portrait. You have to be able to put their personality and soul in it,” Cindi said. “I want them to have movement, to have texture. Putting the details inside makes them come alive.”
She pays intense attention to detail to both the silhouette and the materials that create the final framed product, using only top-quality silhouette paper, acid-free linen paper to adhere it to and oval frames. She often cuts one silhouette and after examination does a second to refine it. Each portrait takes from 12 seconds to a minute, with her record being 144 an hour. At most events she can create 30-plus an hour, and more if she has an assistant paste them to the background paper. She’s conceived of a charming idea for a wedding: she cuts two copies, one of which goes in a guest book for guests to write a special message.
Among the celebrities Cindi has met in person and made a silhouette for are: Queen Elizabeth, Ashley Judd, Dr. Phil, Lisa Ling, Zac Posen, Elvis Presley, Barbara Bush, Mohammed Ali, Tony Bennett and Sarah, Duchess of York. Among the entities that have invited her to make silhouettes at meetings, stores and offices are St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, Cirque du Soleil, Mac Cosmetics, The Museum of New York, The Museum of San Diego, Hermes, Dolce and Gabbana and Google. Even a motorcycle gang hired her.
While her silhouette artistry brings her the most acclaim, Cindi is an artist in other media, making some of her clothing and jewelry to help people see her as she is – an artist. Her home is filled with her other art – paintings, pottery, sculpture – each a reflection of where she was in life when she created them.
“When you put art in a house it becomes your home,” Cindi said. “It’s a nice house but I’ve made it my home.”
Her work as an artist keeps her in touch with those close to her, such as the artists that worked for her at Astroworld. She’s reconnecting with friends of her daughter, sisters and nieces, who want silhouettes of their young children.
Is it difficult to cut out soulful profiles of so many people after first meeting them?  “I’m creative in everything I do. It’s really worse to not be creative – to be an artist and have to fit in a box. That’s why I’m happy doing silhouettes – I can be myself,” she said.
“I feel like this is what God wanted me to do. All those years I raised my children I was happy because I was meant to nurture. Now people ask what do I do for fun – I work for fun.”

Tumblr media
Kissimmee and Orlando in February are awesome! It's fun, food and festivals all the way!
What's the Weather Like in Orlando in February?
Orlando in February pretty much blows hot and cold. Literally. You can see freezing temps one day and glorious hot sunny days the next. With average highs in the mid 70s and lows of around 40 degrees, packing can be a challenge. We get on average over 10 hours of daily sunshine in February, but a jacket and sweater will be needed at some point. And something warm for the feet. Flip flops and chills do not mix well. The Weekly Dish: Starr Catering heads to Oceana Bal Harbour … & more
Rendering of Ballerina and Oceana Bal Harbour developer Eduardo Costantini
Residents of Oceana Bal Harbour will have another reason to celebrate. Starr Catering Group, founded by restaurateur Stephen Starr, is getting ready to open Ballerina, an indoor/outdoor space at the recently completed condo development. Pastry chef Antonio Bachour will open in downtown Coral Gables, and more.
The Weekly Dish is a TRD recurring feature that showcases the latest in South Florida’s restaurant openings, leases and sales.
Ballerina | Bal Harbour
Starr Catering Group is wrapping up the buildout of Ballerina, a residents-only restaurant opening at Oceana Bal Harbour.
The company and Piero Lissoni designed the space, which will be open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and serve alcohol. It’s set to open in August, according to a spokesperson for the developer.
The 100-seat restaurant is next to the building’s pool deck and spa, and near the Jeff Koons sculpture called “Seated Ballerina.” It will serve seasonal menu items with Mediterranean influences.
Ballerina, led by chef Mark Tropea, will also offer poolside food and drinks, in-condo room service and catering accessible via the building’s app. Starr Catering also runs Verde at the Perez Art Museum Miami. Starr, who is not involved in the Bal Harbour restaurant, sold his stake in the company in 2015. His South Florida restaurants include Upland Miami and the Continental Miami.
Consultatio USA completed Oceana Bal Harbor last year after launching sales for the 28-story, 240-unit development in 2013. The 5.5-acre property features two sculptures by Koons, pools, a beach club, cabanas, a spa, restaurant and tennis court. Oceana was designed by Arquitectonica with interiors by Piero Lissoni and landscaping by Enzo Enea.
Rendering of 2020 Salzedo
Bachour Bakery | Coral Gables
Award-winning pastry chef Antonio Bachour will open a bakery, restaurant and pastry academy at Codina Partners’ 2020 Salzedo.
Bachour will open in a 5,200-square-foot space, including a courtyard, at the mixed-use complex. Ana Barcelo, who just left Koniver Stern to join CBRE, represented Codina in the lease. The bakery is slated to open during the second quarter of next year, according to a press release.
The project includes more than 49,000 square feet of Class A office space, about 7,000 square feet of retail space and a 16-story luxury apartment tower.
Plant Food and Wine | Wynwood
“Raw food wizard” Matthew Kenney is being sued for more than $1.4 million for unpaid rent and for allegedly breaking an agreement to not open a competing restaurant, according to the Miami Herald.
The chef, cookbook author and restaurateur has been sued in New York, Oklahoma City, Maine, Los Angeles and Miami. Now, he’s facing a suit from his former landlord, the Sacred Space owner Karla Dascal, who took control of Plant Food and Wine in Wynwood. In addition to the unpaid rent, Dascal is seeking eviction, alleging that the celebrated vegan chef violated a non-compete agreement by opening Plnthouse at 1 Hotel South Beach.
Kenney’s marketing manager told the Miami Herald that the suit from Sacred Space has “never been served on us.” [Miami Herald]
New wing at Aventura Mall
Tap 42 | Aventura
Tap 42 is set to open its biggest restaurant in Aventura.
The 6,300-square-foot eatery will be part of Aventura Mall’s expansion and is set to open later this year. It will have an additional 1,200-square-foot patio overlooking the mall’s open air plaza. The restaurant will feature distressed wood, rustic lighting and a large bar with plant features.
Tap 42, owned and operated by Tapco Restaurant Group, has used EB-5 financing to fund its expansion, as The Real Deal reported last year. It opened in Midtown Miami earlier this year, and another location in Coral Gables last year, also with the help of EB-5 funds.
Within the Aventura Mall’s 315,000-square-foot expansion will also be Topshop Topman, Zara, Pomellato and Under Armour, as will restaurants CVI.CHE 105, Serafina, Pubbelly Sushi, Harry’s Pizzeria and Blue Bottle.
Stewart’s Restaurant | Fort Lauderdale
A classic American concept will open its first Florida restaurant at the Galleria in Fort Lauderdale.
Stewart’s Restaurant, known for its root beer floats, burgers and Stewart’s Soda, will open later this year at the mall.
Earlier this year, Keystone-Florida Property Holding Corp. withdrew a controversial proposal to build seven condominium buildings around the Fort Lauderdale mall.
Joe & The Juice | Brickell
Denmark’s Joe & The Juice will open at least four stores in Miami.
The juice bar chain, which sells smoothies, coffee, breakfast items and sandwiches, is building out a nearly 2,000-square-foot space at Brickell City Centre, another at 2315 Northwest Second Avenue in Wynwood, and at 1451 Brickell. [The Next Miami]
An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Stephen Starr is managing the restaurant at Oceana Bal Harbour. His former company, Starr Catering Group, will be running Ballerina.

Dr. Jane Fortune: Founder and Chair, Advancing Women Artists Foundation
Dr. Jane Fortune, Founder and Chair, Advancing Women Artists Foundation, who championed the notable research recognizing the work of Florence’s first woman artist, Plautilla Nelli, now being exhibited for the first time at Uffizi Gallery.
Tumblr media
AWA founder Jane Fortune admires a newly restored painting by Nelli. Photo by Leo Cardini.
Indeed, until recently, Nelli’s works were mostly unknown, but thanks to the research of the Advancing Women Artists Foundation (AWA) based in Florence and the US, there are now 19 works attributed to her. Nelli was a sixteenth-century painter and a Renaissance woman in every way. She was a creative talent who tackled large-scale commissions despite the social conventions of her time and an entrepreneur whose art graced the homes of Florentine nobles.
Plautilla Nelli’s Last Supper (1570s) is one of the most important paintings in the history of art by women. It is “The First Last”: the first and possibly only representation of a Last Supper by a female hand. AWA will restore Nelli’s masterwork to its original dignity with the help of the art-loving public through an international crowdfunding campaign on the Indiegogo platform. The goal of #TheFirstLast is to raise $65,000 by April 16, 2017. The painting, whose restoration is scheduled for completion in April 2018, will be permanently displayed at the Santa Maria Novella Museum.  Do you want to join in and help restore Nelli's Last Supper?
Here, Dr. Fortune generously shares with LFF about her own pathway to creative work and research, the importance of this project to her, feminism and collaboration and more...
Where are you from? How did you get into creative work and what is your impetus for creating?
I was born in Indianapolis, IN.  My parents were vociferous readers. A rule in our house for my siblings and myself growing-up was that each of us had to read so many pages, which were determined by our age, in a book of our choice, each week, write a report on what we had read and orally discuss what we read at the dinner table. If we failed to do such, we could not watch our allotted one (1) hour a week of TV. Because of this, I learned to love reading and writing, and this began my lifelong love of words and of writing.

Tell me about your current project and why it’s important to you. What do you hope people get out of your work?
I am the founder and chair of an American not-for-profit foundation, Advancing Women Artists (AWA), whose mission is to research, restore and exhibit works of art, by women, languishing, many for centuries, in the museum deposits in Florence, Italy. (I have lived in Florence part time over 20 years). Over the past 10 years, since AWA was founded, it has restored 40 works of art, by women, and found over 2,000 works of art, by women, hidden, and invisible, in the Florentine deposits. My five years of research, into finding these works languishing in the museum deposits, culminated into a book I wrote, titled “Invisible Women, Forgotten Artists of Florence”.
AWA’s current project is a crowdfunding campaign (#TheFirstLast) to fund the restoration of Suor Plautilla Nelli’s Last Supper. Nelli is the first known woman artist of Florence and her Last Supper is the largest painting (21 feet long) in the world of that subject by an early woman artist. It has been hidden from the public eye for 450 years. Funding this work is important because she is an unknown in the art world, and as the first known woman artist of Florence, AWA wants to give her a “voice”, so she can reclaim her rightful place in Florence’s the cultural history. Does collaboration play a role in your work—whether with your community, artists or others? How so and how does this impact your work?
Collaboration is ALWAYS important. The more people, or the community, is involved, there is more broad based conversation about the subject and the work. An example: Nelli’s first ever solo exhibition is currently being shown at the Uffizi. AWA restored several of Nelli’s works for this show and underwrote the catalogue. This collaboration has been beneficial to both AWA and the Uffizi — to the Uffizi by AWA’ restoring several works, so they could be in the exhibition, and to AWA, the publicity, nationally and internationally, of the Uffizi show, which hopefully brings attention to its crowdfunding campaign.
Considering the political climate, how do you think the temperature is for the arts right now, what/how do you hope it may change or make a difference?
My overall hope, disregarding the political climate, which by all reports, looks very bleak for the arts in general, is that women artists, particularly of the past, “get their due”. For centuries, women artists have represented the hidden half of art history, invisible and unseen. It is their legacy that creates a connection with women of the present. We must salvage our creative past, for it is the first step in guaranteeing our own legacies as women of talent of the future.
Tumblr media

Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work?
If feminism is defined as "the belief that women should be treated as intellectual and social equals to men", I guess feminism does play a role in AWA’s work. The reason AWA restores works of art only by women is because women artists, through the ages, have not been on a equal playing field as men and by restoring these works, hidden for centuries in the museum deposits in Florence, and rehung on museum walls for the public to see, it helps make the playing field more equal.
Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.”  What is your favorite advice you have received or given?
Don’t ever take “no” for an answer. When told something can’t be done, always find a way it CAN be done! “No” is never an answer.

This night marked a milestone for Pigz in Z’Hills and the Chamber because through this event more than $100,000 has been given back to the community. The Chamber hosts this dinner every year to recognize volunteers and sponsors for their contribution to the Chamber’s signature event, Pigz in Z’Hills BBQ & Blues Fest. Attendance at this year’s 10th Annual event held on Saturday, January 18th at the Zephyrhills Airport Venue, was counted at more than 11,000. “An event this size doesn’t just happen,” said Melonie Monson, Executive Director. “It takes thousands of volunteer hours and an amazing community with the heart to give, to pull this off. To know that in 10 years we have given over $100,000 back our community makes all the hard work worth it!”  Through Pigz in Z’Hills, this year the Chamber was able to ‘Pay It Forward’ to  Pasco County Sheriff’s Posse, Zephyrhills Army JROTC, ZHS Athletic Boosters Club,  Zephyrhills Museum of Military History, Zephyrhills Noon Rotary, Arts in Motion, East Pasco YMCA, Restored Hope, Resurrection House Mission and the Zephyrhills/Wesley Chapel Ministerial Association.
Pigz Pays it Forward reaches $100,000 in Donations to Community and Scholarships
Monson announced through the funds raised, the Chamber will be giving out $5,000 in scholarships to ZHS graduating seniors this year which will include: A Performing Arts Scholarship of $1,000, a Turn Around Scholarship of $1,000 and six Academic Scholarships. Laughter could be heard throughout as the chamber staff emerged from the backroom wearing boxing gloves and danced to, “I need a Hero” by Bonnie Taylor, to celebrate some “Unsung Heroes” of this year’s volunteers. Special Recognition Awards “We wanted to recognize some individuals who went above and beyond to make this event a huge success,” stated Monson. Ten volunteers, Calvin Dickinson, Jack Miller, Al Stone, Erica Holden, Melissa Fraley, Stephanie Egan, Helen Mines, Rod Rehrig, Marvin, and Karen Matteson were called up and given gift certificates to the Zephyrhills Brewing Company and some Pigz Swag. Eight team leads were recognized with signs that described their personalities like “My Grill is Hot, Hot, Hot!” which was given to Randy Light for cooking the volunteer lunch and “You can’t handle my sauce!” that was presented to Kym Corkum of the Sheriff’s Posse for her spicy way of taking charge.
