lycans, lycans everywhere
Mia Dearden. Roy Harper.
Monsters. Revolvers. Cabins In The Woods.
1889 words.
(ao3.)
Mia Dearden trudges through the woods with an empty quiver on her back.
The California redwoods stand tall and proud around her, like a mighty, sturdy shield. The air is cold, uncharacteristically so — it’s a sensation that sends an eerie shiver down her spine.
In her left hand Mia holds her usual bow, something rendered useless without the aid of her arrows, and in her right is the sturdy fixed dagger she keeps strapped to the small of her back — her last resort, as she likes to call it. She holds the knife harder than anything else, knowing full well that it’s her saving grace if shit hits the fan.
As she continues to walk, the memories of the attack are still fresh in her head.
Speedy had done everything she could to protect the city from creatures that only existed in nightmares. The image of jarringly fast monsters — those with dark fur where skin used to be and canine-like snouts — just cannot leave her head.
In her heart she doesn’t want to believe that they are the stuff of folklore, but the way the creatures snarl and roar and change innocent humans with a mere bite is telling her otherwise. When she was growing up, things like werewolves and lycans were the monsters under her bed, not the monsters that roamed the world outside.
The plan had been to evacuate Star City’s most vulnerable neighborhoods via bus. Speedy had fought tirelessly just to keep the civilians safe, firing as fast as they could until the last life had boarded their ride to safety. It was fortunate that her broadheads were strong enough to pierce the heart of the lycans and bring them down — if only she didn’t need to exhaust her entire quiver to win the battle.
While Speedy had helped the city’s populace escape the monsters of the night, it left her unable to join the citizens in safety.
Now she’s here, trudging through the woods on the faintest hunch that her loved ones will be waiting for her. A static-filled call from her brothers had told her to come to the forest — Roy’s cliffside cabin would act as their safehouse as they concocted their next plan of action.
Mia isn’t sure if a chaotic werewolf attack happening while Ollie and Dinah are off planet is a good thing or bad thing.
With every step Mia takes, she begins to believe that her hunch is false. Perhaps she should have given up when her motorcycle ran out of fuel and forced her to continue on foot.
Just as Mia starts to consider turning around, the sound of a gunshot bursts through the air.
Mia immediately jumps. The bullet hits the ground near her feet and throws up a small cloud of dirt. Noting that the shot had come from above, Mia puts her hands in the air and looks to the trees.
“WHOA, HEY! FRIENDLY! FRIENDLY!”
Looking at the branches, Mia quickly notices something unfamiliar. Situated high above the ground is a human suspended on ropes and standing on a branch. The sight of red hair and a scarlet costume immediately tells her who it is.
“Mia?!!” Roy calls out. With shocking swiftness, he adjusts the ropes keeping him aloft and rappels down the trunk of the tree.
He hits the forest floor with surprisingly grace. Slung around his torso is a rugged automatic rifle in place of his usual archery gear, which solves the mystery of the gunshot.
Once on the ground, Roy runs up to his sister and unhesitatingly pulls her into a hug, obviously making sure that the business end of his rifle is pointed down. Mia hugs him back almost immediately, only realizing now in the middle of the woods just how much she had missed the presence of another human being.
“Sorry about that,” Roy says once he lets her go. He places his hands on her shoulders. “I thought you were one of them.”
“Hey, it happens,” Mia brushes off. She lets out an awkward chuckle, as if it’s the only thing keeping her relatively sane in a stressful situation. “What were you doing up there?”
“I’m on watch duty,” explains Roy, stepping away and showing off his rifle.
Immediately, Mia takes note of Roy’s attire. Instead of his usual red suit, he is sporting a tactical vest over a t-shirt, a black one covered with pouches of ammo and much much more. The model of his rifle is an M4 carbine — although the barrel is short he keeps a sharp bayonet underneath, perhaps as a last resort of his own. Strapped to his leg is his backup pistol, as well as a surprisingly large combat knife.
It isn’t the first time Mia has seen her brother looking ready for war, but considering the situation they’re in — i.e a west coast lycan invasion that necessitated the evacuation of an entire city — she doesn’t blame him.
“How long did it take you to get here?” asks the redhead, looking at the path behind his sister.
“Too long,” Mia answers. She grabs her dropped dagger off the ground and tucks back into its sheath. “Where’s Connor?”
“At the cabin with Lian,” Roy explains, gesturing north. “It’s just up the hill over there. We’re taking shifts to keep guard.”
Mia nods along — it’s fitting of Roy to concoct a simple, practical plan of action. Frankly, it would be stranger if he didn’t.
“Smart.”
Then like lightning in the sky, the howl of a wolf resonates far in the distance of the woods. The pair of archers go still and glance down south.
Another howl, then suddenly a snarl, a sound so grating that it sends chills down Mia’s spine. From her belt belt she grabs her binoculars and Roy raises his rifle to look through the scope. In the distance they see a group of small, dark four-limbed figures, some running on the ground and others leaping through the trees.
Mia doesn’t know what scares her the most — the fact that lycans are real and coming this way, or the fact that each and every one of them was once a human being. She remembers shooting arrows at some of the creatures and realizing that the clothes on their bodies are still fresh and clean.
Despite the image of gore still fresh in her head — as the city lycans clearly enjoyed feasting on the humans they didn’t turn — it’s the sliver of humanity in their eyes that makes Mia’s stomach churn.
Mia lowers her binoculars and says the only words her mind can come up with —
“Well, shit.”
“Run to the cabin, it’s your best bet,” Roy tells her. He turns around to go back to his tree, but looks back to her. “What do you got on you?”
Mia gestures to her empty quiver. “I’m all out.”
Unhesitatingly, Roy reaches to his leg holster and pulls out his revolver — a rather rugged S&W R8 loaded with eight rounds of 357. magnum. He even has a laser sight mounted on top.
“Here, take this,” he urges, holding the firearm up to his sister. “Come on!”
In any other situation Mia would hesitate, but knowing the severity of the situation she grabs the weapon. As she flips out the cylinder to get familiar with the firearm, she tries to remember the last thing Roy had taught her when he brought her to the gun range.
“You don’t happen to have silver bullets in this thing, would you?”
Roy makes a sound that is somewhere between a laugh and a sigh. “God, I wish.”
He rummages through one of the pouches on his vest and pulls out two speedloaders, both already filled with extra rounds. If this is how much gear Roy has on him now then Mia can’t imagine what he has back at the cabin.
The howls of wolves behind them ascend to roars and screeches, a noise that grates against Mia’s ears like nails on a chalkboard. Knowing what she has to do, she flips the revolver’s cylinder back behind the barrel.
Roy grunts and runs to his tree, quickly reassembling his grappling system and winching himself back up the trunk.
“GO!” he screams. “COME ON!!! BEAT IT!!!”
Her gut instinct tells her to stay and help out, yet somehow Mia breaks into a run. She dashes across the forest floor, the sound of lycans getting louder and louder behind her. The faint growls get louder as her heart begins to beat faster. The sound ascends into a thunderous roar and only now Mia remembers just how unnerving the lycans can be. The leaves below her boots crunch as she begins to pick up the pace.
In her peripherals she sees a dark figure running amongst the branches. When she looks up she sees a creature with dark fur all over its body and a face that looks more canine than human.
The sound of a rifle shot rings through the air.
Mia looks behind her to see a lycan falling from a branch and Roy still in the tree. Using the mounted scope on his rifle Roy simply re-aims the barrel of his M4 and pulls the trigger again. He’s shockingly graceful in this element, able to focus on his aim while remaining aloft in the branches. Roy prides himself on making every shot count — whether he be shooting bullets or arrows — and today is no exception.
Even though deep down she worries for him, Mia forces herself to keep going. Roy is more than capable of keeping himself safe and she knows that.
Blood pumps in her ears as the sound of snarling gets louder and louder. Mia runs as fast as her legs can take her as her grip on her revolver tightens.
Then in a split second, she sees something dark rush into her peripherals. Before Mia knows it, a large, lanky lycan has jumped in front of her. Her heart skips a beat as it swipes a long claw at her. Her reflexes help her dodge the blow, but not without causing her to lose her balance. She stumbles back a few steps, then feels her heel snag on a root and falls onto her bottom.
Once on the ground, Mia locks eyes with the lycan. At this point she’s seen her fair share of atrocities for a lifetime, yet the sight of the canine-like creature stirs a mess of fear and discomfort inside of her.
The creature lets out a roar and lunges forward and immediately Mia raises her revolver up. Unhesitatingly, she pulls the trigger, the hammer falls back, and through the barrel comes a single bullet that strikes the lycan on the shoulder.
The impact of the shot forces the creature backwards and onto the ground. Mia gets up and sees the lycan letting out an excruciating cry of pain, a telling sign that she may live to see the end of this tale. With her heart pounding so hard it may burst out of her chest, Mia raises her revolver again and keeps her finger on the trigger.
“Yeah, that’s right!” she says with all the bravery she can muster. She puts pressure on the trigger and the cylinder rotates a new round behind the barrel.
“How do you like this, asshole?!”
