Is it intentional or a glitch when Jonathan speaks over himself in the Spotify paid version of the Oct 15 ep starting around 2:58min in?
it's a glitch; we fixed the episode about 12 hours after it aired so if you re-download the file you'll be able to listen to a fixed version

(trip report from 6/30 copied from my notes app. the capitalization was bc I considered publishing it but decided not to)
(2 edibles- approx. 4g each) a. muscaria gummies + 10mg delta-9 gummy:
Time and Extra Information: Taken at 3:50pm. Age 21, 200lbs with slightly slow metabolism. Personally, muscimol usually takes anywhere from 1 to 2½ hours to kick in, while Delta-9 takes anywhere from 1 hour to as little as 20 minutes.
Doses: Muscimol- 8g (2 gummies) + Delta-9- 10mg (1 gummy)
State of Mind: Relatively calm, generally just feeling "normal". Slightly tired.
Prep. and Intentions: I never partake in alcohol when I know I'll be doing shrooms at any point during the day. Alcohol and shrooms do not mix well and I avoid this combination as much as possible. I changed into comfortable clothes and have no plans for the rest of the evening. Intention is more just for fun and/or something to pass time, as well as have documentation of effects out of curiosity.
4:15-4:30pm (+25-40min): The Delta-9 seems to kick in first. Brain feels slightly foggy and confusion regaurding time has started. Typing is difficult but not a challenge. Still in a decently good mood, if not pleased that the effects are felt unusually quickly.
4:38pm (+48min): Feeling increased tiredness as well as extremely subtle visual effects. Pretty normal for trips. Phone (including keyboard) seems farther away than it actually is, consequently making typing even more difficult.
4:53-5:00pm(+1hr 3min- 1hr 10min): Text and Speech is less familiar, but not incomprehensible. no new visuals. Increased appetite begins around now (another expected effect) as well as short-term memory issues. Suprisingly competent enough to use a knife.
5:20-5:50pm (+ 1hr 30min- 2hrs): Starting to feel less feeling of self that's hard to describe. Muscimol has most likely hit. Closest possible description I can think of is feeling more like the enviroment/ background than yourself. Starting to have stronger physical sensations, mostly tingliness from long-term RLS.
6:25pm (+2 hr 35min): Increased sleepiness, typical around this time.
6:48pm (+ 2hr 58min): Ate some sugar & strawberries and it tasted amazing. Better than they usually do.
7:41pm (+ 3hr 51min): Geeling incredibly sleepy. Coming down from the high about now. Any visual effects are gone by now.
Went to bed at 10pm. All around a genrally tame and short trip- especially since what I was taking was meant to be microdoses. I've never really experienced any of the typical "psychadelic" effects when I take A. muscaria, though the trips are far from unpleasant. I'd really love to find some Psilocybe some day, or know where to get them, to compare notes. Generally I consider A. muscaria to be a tame but enjoyable experience.

JM JK timeline.- my observations how they grew over the years - 2017
Disclaimer: these are my own opinions and conclusions. Feel free to disagree, but hate or aggression will be unacceptable.
2017 - part 2
12 Feb 2017 – “You never walk alone” preview show. Who’s JM’s little cutie?
14 Feb 2017 – JM Twitter post – the boys with matching jackets. I know. I said not Twitter, but sometimes rules are made to be broken.
17 Feb 2017 – Hobi’s birthday. JM to JK: “stop coming to our room at night.” There’s something about JM throwing JK under the bus time after time. It’s like he enjoys to see JK squirm.
22 Feb 2017 – Gaon Chart K-pop chart – JK ushering Hobi to another seat, so that JK can sit behind JM. JM turning around see this, rolls his eyes and smirks.
24 Feb 2017 – KBS Music Bank comeback - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4_ASZuLeVk&t=156s
Another one of my favourites. A perfect example for both boys hesitance, wanting to touch, but just not getting there.
JM putting arm behind JK, but holding on to wall behind, and then matter of factually laying it on JK’s shoulder.
JM micro touching, or brushing JK’s hand with his thumb.
Prior to JM brushing JK’s hand with his thumb, JK’s hand is heart signing to JM.
The minute JM moves his hand away, you see how the expression on JK’s face changes, then he rubs his hand where JM touched him.
24 Feb 2017 fan meet – are they in actual F… sending flying kisses to each other?
25 Feb 2017 MBC music core comeback – JK moving Hobi aside, so that JK can stand behind JM. JK being JM’s number 1 fanboy.
26 Feb 2017 – Wings – you never walk alone fan sign. Really JM? What was that neck grab and what exactly were you doing there???? No, I don’t believe he kissed JK’s neck, but it sure was ‘out there’, so much so that Jin was in total shock when it happened. JK was surprised by it, and I think that even JM was shocked by his own actions waling aimlessly in what seems like the wrong direction .
28 Feb 2017 Run BTS episode 12. This one for me was cringe worthy, at some points I felt like an actual intruder. JK the detective and JM the prisoner. JK whacking JM on the behind (remember JK is the younger – how bold). JM’s private dance for JK. I know the episode was mostly scripted, but I seriously think JM was surprised by that smack to his behind. Also, the way JK was looking at JM when he was dancing all heart hands for him.
12 March 2017 - Wings tour Santiago Chile
Santiago day 2 – JK suffers from exhaustion. As he is taken back stage to a treatment room, JM is the one to race after the team into the room.
JM is in the treatment room when the cameras come in. He is standing there, and later, as the other members are walking in, JM is by JK’s side, helping the medical team lift up one of his legs.
The rest of the members come in together to see how JK is doing, and when the medical team suggest to take off JK’s pants, all the members leave the room. All except for JM, who stays there with JK the whole time.
JM leaves the room only together with JK, after he feels better and is able to walk out of the room on his own two feet.
Wouldn’t you expect RM, being the leader and all, to be the one by JK’s side? Or J-Hope maybe? Wouldn’t that have made more sense under the circumstances? Why JM?
Because, clearly JM is the one JK feels closest to, the one he can be himself with freely, the one he doesn’t feel embarrassed or needs privacy from.
JM may not have been a family member, but he was the closest thing to it. JM to JK is and was his home, his safe place, and most certainly the one to be by his side when he was in distress.
March 2017 BTS Live trilogy episode the Wings tour in Santiago Chile & Brazil.
March 2017 BTS Live trilogy episode the Wings tour in Chicago.
April 2017 3rd Muster dvd – the muster was at end of 2016, but dvd was released in 2017. During photo shoots they are being posed by the photographers. Yes, there will be authentic moments between them, but sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s being directed. That’s why I don’t always like to add these to my timeline. Even so, they were so cute, so I couldn’t leave this one out.
3rd April 2017 – BTS Front row live entertainment interview – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UotjcB_X4ag . What happened there?
This one intrigues me. I watched and re-watched the full interview several times, and for the life of me I can’t see what happened there between JM and Hobi that triggered JK’s reaction? JM’s placating look at JK, like telling him nothing happened… this one is used a lot to create the JK jealous narrative, and to be honest, I really don’t know what happened there. When JK turns back, JM looks into the camera with an uneasy gaze.
After that, most of the time, JM looks lost in his thoughts, not happy. Towards the end they are asked what artist they would want to collaborate with, and Suga’s answer makes them all burst out in laughter, all accept for JM. When he is asked and answers, you also see he is unhappy. You can easily see something is bothering him. JM just wasn’t his happy own self. He looked pensive. BTS did several interviews and had a concert that day, so maybe he was just tired or wound up, but he just wasn’t acting like himself.
April 2017 - Bon Voyage 2 Hawaii
Highlights of the highlights: The but checking and identifying (are we taking skinship to another level, are we??).
JK getting drenched at the beach, JK getting drenched period. Lol.
JK gobbling down piping hot Pizza so JM can eat.
JM playing footsies under the table with JK, all while sitting opposite V.
JK edging JM to come along calling him “Aegyo” = “Baby”. J
M making sure JK doesn’t go hungry, buying him food with his own money. JM taking care of JK.
JK and JM on same team – the joy… Spending the day together and just being happy.
Did JK really lose the game on purpose so he can be in the room with JM?
The amount of times we hear Jimin-ssi in every kind of cute and flirty way JK can say it…
Bonus:
22 April 2017 JK Vlive – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5n8y3D0Z9pM .
JK doing everything to get JM back to his room while playing loud music.
JK’s face lighting up when JM returns to his room.
JK telling JM he looks handsome without makeup.
JK pissed off when V comes in too, saying “why is everyone coming?”.
When V touches JK’s ear, JK pushes him away.
JM moving off camera to fix his robe, and JK not taking his eyes off him.
V putting his foot on JK’s back (this is something I have seen V do a few times, it’s not a gentle touch, to me it feels more like asserting dominance), and JM pushes him off.
And what exactly did JM mean when he said he has no talent for games but “I was quite good at it a year ago”? Only to be followed by the stare, OMG, the stare. Why, oh why did V have to ruin the moment, eh?
22-23 April 2017 Bangkok concert. Flirting on stage, attention to each other.
24 April 2017 Eat Jin Vlive with JM and JK - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqxX_UGXSlY .
Jin complaining why JM doesn’t hit him like he did JK, so JM hits him too. Lol. JM stealing the steak JK cuts for himself, while JK lets him, smiling. The way JK just lets JM get away with anything, even interfering with the ultimate ‘ship’ - Jungfood.
3 June 2017 – J-14 magazine interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7rXl8uuUTY&t=306s . from 3.33min. to 4.37min especially.
Wtf was JM up to there????? It looks pretty dubious, especially when you look at the faces on the two of them when it was going on. Up to your interpretation.
2 June 2017 – Ceremonial first pitch at baseball match – Hanshin Koshien stadium - JK and JM’s jersey numbers – coincidence or not?
12 June Festa 2017 BTS BangtanTv – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWA6f7g7NUQ&t=2s.
JK’s intense stare at JM, when JM joined the others in with the others when they were laughing at JK eating everyone’s food but not ordering any for himself, which causes JM to immediately stop laughing.
Poor JK being blindsided when it was pointed out that the only one he bought a birthday present for last year was JM. Oops. (why oh why JM did you throw him under the bus like that??? You were curious? Really???? JM keeps doing this) Poor boy was so embarrassed. Hobi was the one to actually save him, stating how generous JK has become lately giving away his things that he didn’t need. JK never answered the question.
27 June 2017 BV2 special commentary live – JK getting all flustered when asked to explain the difference between BV1 and BV2. JM looking at him, enjoying every second.
4 August 2017 - KBS Music Bank Singapore. JK not loving on Taemin. The way he turns around the minute JM and Taemin interact, and the discontent look on his face…cold. He’s not a happy camper. He glancing in the direction a couple of times, but he is mostly turned away from them. And when JM runs up to slap Taemin in the butt, JK sees this, averts his head, and just keeps walking off the stage. He is clearly upset. Besides the obvious faces he makes, not waiting for Jimin when walking off stage is not something he usually does. Was it jealousy? Was it just a disliking of Taemin specifically? And if he dislikes Taemin, why is that? We can’t know.
OK now, I know I said that I won’t be doing Twitter, but this one I felt I had to (again, oops):
On the 6th of August 2017 JM posted a photo he took during their Hawaii trip (BV2). Why take this photo, and why post it? Do I really have to ask this question?
29th August 2017 the famous, or infamous People Now “arrest me” interview - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XgGxcMndEk8 .
I couldn’t find the actual date of this interview, but it was uploaded end of August 2017. I really enjoyed this one. Everyone talks about JK’s “arrest me” JM mishap during this interview. The members reactions are to die for.
Can someone tell me please what Suga told JK in Korean before they moved on?????
Also, JK’s reaction when JM said he wanted to collab with Suga (watch from 7:58min), was like:
W H A T in T H E actual F U C K???. LMAO.
Summer package 2017 – released August 2017.
JK and JM being all playful by the pool. JK letting us know how adorable JM is to him when he is swimming doggy style in the pool.
The one that stands out to me, though, is the ‘dream catcher necklace saga’. Felt a little uneasy to see that one, like I was witness to a lover’s tiff.
The boys were given a budget each to purchase themselves a gift. They are taken together to a gift shop, where they check the merchandise out and each buy themselves a little souvenir. When they all sit down to show each other their gifts, that’s when this moment happens.
JK takes out his gift. I once again want to emphasize, this is a gift he bought with his budget for himself. He explains it’s a dream catcher and says he will put it in his room.
JM, sitting next to him, takes it from JK and says: “this is a necklace Jungkook-ssi”.
JK blurts out adamantly that he won’t hang it around his neck.
This is when things get awkward, because you can see JM is clearly upset, throws the necklace back at JK and says: “OK, then”.
JM has a dream catcher necklace around his neck too, and when it’s his turn to tell what gift he bought himself he takes the necklace off and gives it to V, saying he bought the gift for V, who had a nightmare last night.
After JM’s mini tantrum JK, who previously adamantly professed he will not put it around his neck, does everything he can to put the necklace on, finally turning to JM to help him put the it on, which he does.
Later on, while sitting for the personal interview, with the necklace around his neck, he tells us how from now on he won’t have nightmares.
What did I get from all that?
Clearly JM was pissed at JK’s reaction. Why? JK clearly bought this by himself for himself.
But did he? Was it something he chose for himself, or was it something JM suggested to him?
JM also bought a dream catcher. Was that a coincidence? For some reason, I don’t think so.
My theory is that the dream catcher is something JM suggested or wanted JK to buy for himself, and JK reluctance to wear it offended him. JM clearly bought the other dream catcher for V. Perhaps he wanted both his boys to have one, and to him, JK’s comment felt as a rejection.
The way JK reacted to JM, his immediate change of attitude towards the necklace, trying to put it on, when only a second earlier he said he won’t put this around his neck, shows how attuned he was to JM, how he immediately realised he did something wrong, something to upset JM, and how he tried, in his own way, to atone for it, by wearing the same thing he but seconds ago rejected.
This brings me back to the point I made about the boys relationship, and them finding the balance. A perfect example to how there will still be conflict, but how JK realises, immediately, that he had done wrong and what he has done wrong, and immediately sets to right the wrong, hence to restore that balance.
JM throwing the necklace at JK. Also, notice the editor’s remark. JM’s anger is obvious not only to me.
To be continued...

An investigative journalist (Craig) forms an uneasy alliance with a computer hacker (Mara) in an attempt to solve a disappearance. Th400 transbrake kit. Fincher amps up the dark poetry and Mara exudes a barely suppressed rage in every scene, elevating a populist novel into a compelling (if overlong) drama of bleakness and corruption.

Publisher Will (Craig) relocates to the suburbs with his wife (Weisz) and daughters, but when their house turns out to be the scene of a massacre, the domestic dream turns sour. Best remembered as the movie that saw Craig and Weisz get together, because their chemistry can't save the clunky script and inert direction.

PG
Directed by: Steven Spielberg

Good supporting performances and rather pedestrian flashbacks make for…

12A
Directed by: Marc Forster
Written by: Ian Fleming, Michael G Wilson
Cast: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Gemma Arterton, Judi Dench, Jeffrey Wright, Giancarlo Giannini
'Quantum of Solace' starts with a trademark action sequence involving cars burning rubber around narrow roads and then proceeds to jump from one thrill to another, while moving through locations like pages in a travel brochure. A major plus is Amalric's turn as the villain Dominic Greene, head of an organisation which…

US
1h 58min
15
Directed by: Douglas McGrath
Written by: Douglas McGrath, Book:, George Plimpton
Cast: Toby Jones, Sandra Bullock, Lee Pace, Daniel Craig, Jeff Daniels, Peter Bogdanovich
A more flamboyant and light-hearted biopic of Truman Capote than Bennett Miller's 2005 film 'Capote'. Jones is great in the lead as the eccentric writer but a weak supporting cast renders this the lesser of the two.
Casino Royale
2006
US / UK / Czech Republic
2h 24min
12A
Directed by: Martin Campbell
Written by: Ian Fleming
Cast: Daniel Craig, Eva Green, Mads Mikkelsen, Judi Dench
The prequel to the other Bond films time warps back to the enduring action hero becoming a 00 licensed to kill. The latest Bond (Craig) proves to be a strong leading man, but the film is let down by trying to do too much. With a weak villain and Bond girl to boot, it doesn't really feel like a Bond film at all.
Renaissance

1h 45min
15
Directed by: Christian Volckman
Cast: Daniel Craig, Romola Garai, Jonathan Pryce

List of Shame
My main goal was to get to the movies that have left a cultural footprint and do this as cheaply as possible. In the cases of "Gone with the Wind" and "Pyscho," those are movies you know about even if you aren't a movie fan. These are a massive part of our pop culture. "Pretty in Pink" and "Some Like it Hot" are looked to as exemplars of a director (John Huges) and an actress (Marylin Monroe), respectively.
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
This is the only one I would not consider a "List of Shame" movie. It is always mentioned in the conversation of greatest comedies, but I don't think it has the cultural cache of the others on this list.
Neal (Steve Martian )begrudgingly joins shower curtain ring dealer, Del (John Candy), to get home to Chicago for Thanksgiving.
I have to say I liked this one a lot. Martian and Candy are masters of comedy and rightfully earned their places in the pantheon of great comedic performers. Martian, in particular, is the perfect straight man. To watch him deal with Candy's outrageous Del makes this movie one of the best comedies. Those two have spectacular chemistry, and the heartfelt ending feels so earned. 8/10

Pretty In Pink
I was trying not to spend any money on movies this week. I saw this on one of the streaming sites I have access to, but it was not there when I went to look for it. I ended up having to rent this one on iTunes.
Andie (Molly Ringwald) is in love with rich kid Blane (Andrew McCarthy.) She has never been popular at school because she doesn't come from money like most other students. When she and Blane start dating, she struggles to feel okay in his world.
This was good, but I was not fond of it as much as other John Huges movies. My absolute favorite is "The Breakfast Club," and that was crossed off my list of shame about two years ago. That movie blew me away. "Pretty in Pink" was fine. I enjoyed it and would recommend it easily if you haven't seen it. It just didn't hold up to "The Breakfast Club," which you should see if you have not done so.

Rated PG-13

Some Like It Hot
I was very confused when this movie started. When the opening scene is some bootleggers running from the cops in this movie that is one of the best comedies of all time, I had a moment when I thought I put in the wrong movie. Then I saw Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, and things started to make sense. It turns out I knew less about this movie than I thought.
Joe (Curtis) and Jerry (Lemmon) are musicians who owe money to many people. To get away from the mob, they pose as women and join an all women's band.
A few years ago, I bought a Marylin Monroe collection and had been slowly working my way through it. Luckily "Some Like It Hot" was next up (see the next movie for a much different story), and I loved it so much. I have seen the final scene of this movie more times than I can count. Knowing the ending, however, didn't ruin this in the least. To watch Lemmon and Curtis navigate the myriad of lies that have been telling is hilarious.
Did you know there have been 600 books written about Marilyn Monroe? Just a fun fact that I learned while looking as her IMDb. She is brilliant in everything I have seen her in. She knows who she is and leans into that "dumb blonde" trope. She has earned her spot as a Hollywood icon, and it is unfortunate that her personal demons caught up with her, and she died so young (I am as old as she was when she died).

Psycho
I also have an Alfred Hitchcock boxset that I have been working my way through. The problem was (or not depending on how you look at it) was that there were four movies in front of "Psycho." I know. Poor me, I had to watch four Hitchcock movies this week before I could watch another Hitchcock movie. Thank you for your sympathy.
Never have I ever known so much about a movie and yet so little. As I watched this, I realized that I had no idea what the movie was about beyond Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) murdering Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) in the shower. I had no idea about the $40,000 that she stole or the investigation into her disappearance.
I have watched so many Hitchcock movies, some more than once, but I never got around to the most well known. It was not for the same reason as my former aversion to horror movies. It was just that I never got around to it. And after watching it, I can say it is one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. There is so much he does to build the mystery and create an uneasy atmosphere that he lives up to all the accolades he gets.

Gone With The Wind
Now we come to the main event of the week; the three hour and 58-minute epic "Gone With the Wind." I will skip the synopsis because this, like many other movies on this list, is well known.
Given the world we live in, "Gone With the Wind" is problematic. HBO knew this, and when the Black Lives Matter protests started, they took the movie down. The said they would put it back up with a discussion of its history and its problems. I have not watched the hour-long discussion of the film yet, but I plan to this weekend. If you want an extended analysis of these elements of the film, there lots of better writers than I who have tackled that subject.
I enjoyed the movie overall, but it could have been so much better. It could have been a fantastic character study. Scarlett (Vivian Leigh) is set up to have this incredible arch of a character. She could have gone from this winey, stuck up, selfish brat to someone who becomes a better person over the almost 4-hour movie. She doesn't, and it is very disappointing. It could be that I am watching a 1940 movie as someone who lives in 2020, but things like character growth are important to me. None of the characters grow and change all that much, and it bothered me.
I can see why this is a classic. It is a sweeping epic of a movie, and it is an event. It is the type of film we don't get to see that much anymore. I appreciated it for that.

Oh, You Thought That Movie Was Long...
So I told my housemates that I was going to watch Gone with the Wind and I would be in my room for a the afternoon. Sometimes they get a little noisy so I let them know when I am doing online tutoring or if I am watching a movie that I am reviewing so they don’t literally yell right outside my door. It is sad I have to tell them every time, but at least they respect my requests (especially when it comes to the tutoring). Instead of the normal “yeah, sure” or “no problem,” we ended up basically playing a game of who had seen the longest film and this culminated in a search for what the longest cinematic film of all time was. Here are some results if you ever get into this game or you want to challenge yourself:
Intolerance (1916): 2hr 43min, black and white, silent film
This movie is not all that long compared to others, but it is silent with really slow music and is split into 4 separate stories that don’t make a lot of sense due to the absence of dialogue. The film is on the AFI top 100 so I am going to have to watch it again sooner or later, but I am really not looking forward to it.
The Lord of the Rings (2001-3): 11hr 16min, trilogy
These movies kind of count because, although they were released separately, it is a continued storyline that was simply broken into 3 parts. Everyone in my house has sat down and watched all three movies consecutively at some point, but I don’t know if it counts because the films are split and everyone took long breaks in between films. I don’t think it is that hard to sit through these films but I am a fan of sci-fi and fantasy. If you are curious, The Hobbit series is quite a bit shorter at only 8hr 52min.
Gone with the Wind (1939): 3hrs 58min, longest film on AFI list
This is the longest running movie on the AFI top 100, but not by that much. There are a dozen movies that dip well into the 3 hour range, but this one beats out Lawrence of Arabia by 10 minutes. Gone with the Wind would actually be 15 minutes shorter if it weren’t for the extended credits, overture, and intermission. Just know you will need to put aside 4 hours to get through the whole thing.
Hamlet (1996): 4hrs 2min, longest movie I have made it through
I had to watch this for my Shakespeare unit when I was in high school and it turned out that I loved it. This is not only the longest movie I have seen, but also one of my favorites. I am a sucker for good Shakespeare remakes and this movie has every single line with nothing cut out. There are a couple of movies that I have seen that are longer, but I did not make it through them without a nap or a very long break. I made it through Hamlet in one sitting with no problems (maybe a bathroom break but that is it).
Amra Ekta Cinema Banabo (2019): Over 21 hours, Bangladeshi
I had to look this one up since I am not very familiar with films out of Bangladesh, but this is apparently the longest cinematic film ever made. Most all of the cinematic films over 5 hours tend to be from Asian countries or France, but this one wins hands down being almost 7 hours longer than second place. It is the story of citizens in the aftermath of the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. The film was made over a period of 9 years with 176 days of shooting and around 4000 artists and crew. This did make me more interested in learning about the history of Bangladesh and Pakistan and I am sure it is a fine film, but I don’t think I would be able to make it through this film because 21 hours is just such a long period of time. Maybe in many sittings over a week.
Logistics (2012): 35 days 17 hours; longest released film to date
So that you don’t have to Google it, the longest film that I could find that was actually released was an experimental art film out of Sweden that follows the creation and shipping of a pedometer in real time. The idea is kind of interesting, but I don’t have a month to check this out. Besides the people who actually made the film, I wonder if there is anybody who actually has seen this film in its entirety. I kind of hope not.
So there you go. If you want to play the “longest movie I can name off the top of my head” game or if you are extremely fortuitous and have a bonus question in a pub quiz, you’re welcome. Now excuse me while I try to take notes on Gone with the Wind without dozing off from the heat. It shouldn’t be too hard since I truly love the film, but you never can tell with an epic movie.
*Well, I got a note from someone named @actionbastard1 who made a fine suggestion for this list in the form of the Erich Von Stroheim film Greed (1925). It is based on the great American novel McTeague and is part of the National Film Registry. This silent black and white contribution had an original theatrical cut that apparently ran over 9 hours for critical review and was 42 reels long. It was eventually cut up by MGM to the point it made no sense and only ran 140 minutes. A 1999 reconstruction was created to try and get a feel for the original cut that runs just slightly short of 4 hours.

MGM does Jane Austen in style
Emma
Director Autumn de Wilde Stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Johnny Flynn, Mia Goth, Bill Nighy UK 2020 Language English 2hrs 4mins Colour
Super-chic literary adaptation
My big fear when it comes to any Jane Austen adaptation is that you get to the end and you’re left with admiration for the production designer, the costume department and the location scouts… but haven’t actually laughed. Judged on that basis, there’s a clear winner between these two films – which is indeed the one I would heartily recommend over the other – but I don’t want to completely write off the loser.
I’m not going to tease this out: the much more enjoyable one of the pair is 1940’s Pride And Prejudice, with a script written by Hollywood veteran Jane Murfin and fairly new-in-town Aldous Huxley, no less. And they provided words that – in the mouths of the terrific cast – are consistently funny. What the studio system at its height could supply was a top-notch selection of players: particularly fun here are Edmund Gwenn and Mary Boland as Mr and Mrs Bennet and Edna May Oliver as Lady Catherine de Bourgh.
The plot, should you be unfamiliar with it, is that the Bennets are cursed with many daughters, no male heir* and not enough money to operate in fashionable circles.
The second eldest and most interesting/opinionated of the daughters is Elizabeth. There are a couple of things to say about Greer Garson, who plays Lizzy. On the one hand, she’s sparky and smart, warm and sly, and affecting when the story needs it. On the other? Elizabeth in the novel is around 20 years old while Garson – and this is apparent from the first time you see her – was in her mid-thirties when this film was made.
Opposite her as Mr Darcy is Laurence Olivier. I’m not a great fan of either the man nor his screen work, but he’s smart casting as the initially fairly up-himself Mr D. And their first big set piece together – when Darcy thinks he’s teaching the basics of archery to Lizzy – is a real treat.
There’s a classic problem that all adaptations of Emma have to face: Emma Woodhouse is our central character and someone whose happy ending is meant to leave us cheering, but who is – for most of the story – a bit of a dick. She messes around with other people’s lives as a way of staving off boredom but deludes herself into believing its alturism. Austen famously wrote: ‘I am going to take a heroine whom no one but myself will much like.’ It’s part of the genius of the best of all Austen-derived movies – the Emma-inspired Clueless – that spoilt and interfering Cher Horowitz is so endlessly likeable.
While the Bennet sisters in P&P are relative underdogs – if far better off than 95% of the population of Regency England – Emma is a creature of pure privilege, so harder to warm to. I think this film eventually manages to get that balance working, but it takes a while. The first half an hour or so is a struggle, full of dense dialogue striving for period authenticity and endless references to not-yet-met characters I was struggling to remember, and I’ve read the book a bunch of times. Anya Taylor-Joy is reasonably well cast as in the main role, and Johnny Flynn as Mr Knightley, the annoying always-right family friend, seems convincingly older than her but not creepily old.
For comedy, the film seems to relying on the fact that just the presence of Miranda Hart and Bill Nighy will have us in stitches. As Hart has never come close to making me laugh, that doesn’t help me much, although it turns out she’s well-suited for the role of the irritating but good-hearted Miss Bates. Nighy is a bit underused as Emma’s clingy, ever-fussing father.
The costume and set design are terrific. As for the location scouts? Architecture definitely has a place in cinema, and even in some Jane Austen adaptations (it matters in Northanger Abbey, and storywise in P&P, although the 1940 version does without the Pemberley visit and doesn’t suffer for it). But it shouldn’t get in the way of the story, and it occasionally it does here. But also, these houses are – I’m pretty sure – too big: the Woodhouses and chums are well off, but not on a royal duke scale, which is what these places feel like.
In the end, this version of Emma won me over: it gets enough of the crucial later scenes right. But it could and should have been funnier, and it’s far too long. That’s why, if you watch one of this films, I’m saying – without hesitation – go for Pride And Prejudice.
*The lots of daughters, but a male cousin is due to inherit everything, is a set-up borrowed by reactionary toff trash Downton Abbey.
