Might actually cry a little bit (in a good way) - the new bill that just passed here in Minnesota granting paid medical leave to people caring for sick family members has such an intentionally expansive definition of "family" that biological and/or legal ties are not actually a prerequisite to qualify for the program. In fact, there's a portion of the bill that specifies anyone designated as family by the incapacitated party can receive the benefits.
Apparently this was done in part to make the policy as inclusive as possible of queer family structures and I am absolutely floored; as someone with a seriously chronically ill queerplatonic partner I worry a lot about my options as a primary caretaker, seeing as the fact that we are not legal partners bars us from so many other benefits, but the fact that this particular one would be inclusive of us (and poly partners, and single queer people with no ties to their biological family but close friends willing to help them out, etc) has given me more hope that may change someday than I think anything ever has.
This is how you do policy that benefits the entire queer community, including poly, ace, and aro folks for whom same-sex marriage has never offered the same legal rights (and plenty of other folks besides, like disabled people or people with terrible biological families -- you don't have to be LGBTQA+ for it to be a seriously important option). This is genuinely incredible. I was excited to see this pass even without knowing it would potentially apply to me, too, but now I'm a total grateful, emotional mess.
#genuinely can't believe this is something that was prioritized in the bill (and then PASSED)#minnesota: a pro-found family state apparently#land of eldritch lakes#aroblogging#aceblogging

i appreciate the more mature take on love in his dark materials, specifically the show scene between lee scoresby and mrs coulter. not "people who love good, people who don't love bad," but "you love her. it's not enough, though, is it? love? doesn't mean she's safe with you, doesn't mean you won't hurt her, it doesn't work like that"

I don't know if it helps to hear at all, but there are people who are better than this and happy to respect the platonic and romantic relationships in their and their partners' lives.
My sister has always been incredibly important to me -- we're family, but we were also each others' best friends growing up, and I think even if we weren't related, we'd have been incredibly close. These days I live several states away from her, and she has a girlfriend she intends to marry in the future who she spends a lot of her time with.
Last year, her girlfriend gifted her a locket (my sister also happens to be a very old-fashioned romantic, so this was a perfect gift for her). Inside, on one side, was a picture of her girlfriend -- and on the other was a picture of me, my sister, and our youngest sister all together, because her girlfriend understood we were equally important to her, and all belonged in this little space that represented her heart.
I know I'm lucky my sister is so great (and wants a partner who understands how much she values her other relationships), but I've had similar things happen with friends, too -- like the couple that asked me, their aro/ace friend, to speak at their wedding because they knew I would do a great job talking about how important found family is to them. And I hope that hearing at least a few stories about alloromantic friends and future family-in-law taking platonic relationships seriously helps a little with the onslaught of stories to the contrary, and maybe gives some of my fellow aspec folks a little hope that we can build our own unconventional "families" in place of the kind society insists on.
Saw a reddit post today about a girl who was upset that her childhood best friend replaced a photo of the two of them in his wallet with one of him and his girlfriend. And while yeah, she was being unreasonable with a lot of what she was saying, I totally understand the sadness of a friend "replacing" you with someone they have romantic feelings for. Makes it worse when the top comment is this
Every single comment on this post is about how family and romantic relationships always take precedence over friendships. I don't have anything more to say to this aside from the fact that... this is why it's hard for aroaces to imagine futures for themselves. Society drills it into your head that you're going to live in a world where you are no one's priority if you don't have romantic relationships and it fucking sucks
#still emotional about the locket tbh#i had a good conversation with my sister when i was visiting about staying connected even though i live far away now#i'm glad i can have serious conversations like that with her and know i'm important enough to her for them to really matter#aroblogging

Something heartening on the aspec front -- I posted in a local subreddit yesterday asking about smaller, more affordable wedding venues as Scribe and I are starting to do some planning and I figured it was worth talking to some actual people about ideas.
In the post I specified that we were platonic partners, because otherwise I start to feel really, really weird about other people's perception of me, since I am still very much aromantic. I didn't think I would get too much pushback, but did think it might result in some weird questions or remarks, just because platonic partnership is obviously not, like, normalized and this was just a subreddit for the city we live in, not a queer one of any kind.
Instead though, I have just gotten 25+ people offering genuinely helpful suggestions, along with another person who commented just to congratulate us and say they were happy to hear about a successful qpr. Which is honestly making me feel some kind of way, and like navigating this planning process without too many tears might actually be possible. I'm so glad people just took that part of the post in stride and wanted to help us anyway.
#been having some uh. complicated feeling about all this#i didn't realize how much i needed that kind of affirmation#aroblogging

NerdyKeppie is running a Kickstarter with pins of various historical queer figures (caveat that yes, historical queer identity is messy and difficult to define, but I still like all their choices) but I am particularly taken by the fact that they made an effort to include a likely-ace historical figure in the set? One of their pin designs is a Nikola Tesla pin in ace Pride colors (and one of the stretch goals would add aro and aro/ace options) and I think I need one, considering I've never seen anyone actually try to include is in something like this before.
(Also all their other pin designs are really cute and you should check them out because I want to see them do well with these)
#does not hurt that i love tesla#so this was very much designed for me to get excited about#aceblogging#aroblogging
