Katniss reads as a character that is so entranced by romance because of all the love she has seen, especially between her parents, but just cannot comprehend herself in a romantic relationship.
She knows who she should logically be with and why she would be compatible with them but most of this is for the benefit of making the other happy. She knows that Gale and her make a perfect team and that Gale is in love with her so it would make sense that he was who she chose to live the rest of her life loving. She also knows that Peeta is who she feels the most comfortable, most safe, with and that he is in love with her so them ending up together would make sense. But she still insists that this is all a hypothetical and not really a priority for her.
In other words Katniss Everdeen is so aromantic in my eyes. Thank you for coming to my TedTalk.

Katniss Everdeen and Love
This is gonna be longer so bear with me
I do personally believe Katniss is aromantic but even if you don’t this all still works
Katniss prior to being reaped is to busy in keeping her mother, sister, and herself alive to even think about love and romance.
Prior to the reaping Gale and Peeta have private crushes
Peeta reveals his love sooner, and while it is for show it is also genuine. Katniss is suddenly forced to be in love with Peeta too keep them both alive. It’s not her choice
After the games Katniss once again is dealing with life
And Peeta wishes the love was genuine, and is upset (he is sixteen) but still understands.
Gale is upset, even when he knows it’s a game, he has this like entitlement to Katniss. He feels like he deserves her, her love and soon too.
At just sixteen Katniss has killed people and almost killed. She is no expected to be head over heels for a guy to keep once again them alive, but also their family’s. She doesn’t have time to process what is happening at all. Love at 16 is already confusing enough
She (and anyone) doesn’t need to fall in love with them. You never owe anyone love. She was never wrong for that, yes at times she acted rashly and rudely
But she was a child with the weight of the world on her shoulders, she was doing her best when adults couldn’t even try

Honestly I don't know how Suzanne Collins does it but she always manages to write the most aroace women ever. Lucy "I value trust more than love" Gray and Katniss "fine, I'll get into a relationship if it'll allow me to win the games" Everdeen

“Katniss isn’t aro!” “Katniss is allo!” “If Katniss is aro her and Peeta and her and Gale wouldn’t make sense!”
Blah Blah Blah
Katniss in Catching Fire pg. 186:
“I do plan on saying one or two things to him after the reaping, when we’re allowed an hour for good-byes. To let Gale know how essential he’s been to me all these years. How much better my life has been for knowing him. For loving him, even if it’s only in the limited way that I can manage.”
For loving him, even if it’s only in the limited way that I can manage.
limited way that I can manage

I honestly think that Katniss is aromantic.
I might be projecting, but through my observations it seems like she doesn’t feel for peeta romantically. Her only times wanting to be close to him are physical and sexual like when she kissed him and actually liked it and wanted more for the first time (kisses are romantic but when they start a deeper desire they can be more then), and because of her aversion to saying loving things or being told loving things or just doing couple stuff in general. I really like this idea too because she honestly always felt like good rep to me and her aromantism is positively portrayed.

The one and only headcanon that, to me, makes perfect sense is aroace Katniss Everdeen. I felt that her romantic interactions with Peeta and Gale were one-sided throughout most of the book, and if anything, were a large part due to her need to survive the games. I do not believe that she was in any way averse to sex or romance though; otherwise she would not be in such a strong romantic relationship with Peeta nor have kids with him. But I do find it sad that she was basically straightwashed to fulfill her role in the love triangle.

"you all make all monotone characters aroace" is so fucking stupid. the reason so many "monotone" characters get this headcanon is because of their lack of interest in sex and or romance, not because they act cold or indifferent to other people.
maybe if the media showed us more bubbly happy go lucky characters, or whatever, with these lack of interests, then we wouldn't have to be dealing with this. maybe that's just going to keep happening until we are finally accepted and understood better in media.
it's not about personality. we don't get to choose the outright nature/personality/physical appearance of the aro/ace coded characters we come across. it's about whether or not we see our ace/aro selves in these characters. it's about whether or not this character is showing signs of sexual attraction or lack thereof, or signs of romantic attraction or lack thereof.
don't forget, so many of these characters are guarded from trauma (and are not actually monotone or two-dimensional) and we don't get to see them open up because the people who write them don't always know how to make them happy without bringing a love interest into the plot.
AND YEAH, aro/ace people are guarded in real life too because we are constantly being told that we're not real, that our identity isn't valid, or that we're rude and heartless and the bad kind of weird and annoying and childish and that we don't know what we're talking about. we get told our opinions don't matter. we get harassed. we get forced on blind dates. we get told we need to be raped. we are told our lives are sad/depressing. we are bombarded with heteronormativity and amatonormativity every waking moment. we're told we're going to die alone and that we're not as important because we're not desirable in the same way others are. the list goes on and on and on.
we are made to feel less desirable, less than human, and feeling like that can lead to being closed off, so YEAH, fuck off to anyone who hates the stereotype. it can be very relatable but is not the end all, and it is not our fault if a character as such, or not, doesn't come off outwardly sexual or romantic.
seriously, tag your aro/ace headcanon characters and your canon characters. maybe they all have the same appearance, or personality but is that really our fault if that's all the media has allowed us? no, it's not, and i doubt we're as full as the same types of characters as we're told we are. or, hell, maybe we are and haters gonna hate us because we and our aspec coded babes don't want to be their friend, let alone anything else.

Hi, I am rereading the hungergames (4 chapters per week). Which is a good excuse to give you random quotes that I think (vaguely) support my interpretation/ headcanon of Katniss being aroace-spec. I will probably not provide explanations or context at this point, nor will the arguments necessarily be good. As this is a work in progress. (And my initial theories all stem from the movies and that one time I read the books as a 12-year-old.)
The general idea is to view the games as an analogy for heteronormativity (forcing Katniss to pretend to love a boy in order to survive).
This is not a question for counter arguments or for you to argue your ship. It’s cool if you do ship things, this is just my take on it.
Also, I still am spiritually a boomer (while physically a 21-year-old), who has no idea how this app works. So I have no idea if this will work (structurally). Excuse the chaos. (Help!)
Page numbers are from the hardcover edition.
“Entrails. No hissing. This is the closest we will ever come to love.” (Page 4.) it’s just to the cat but still.
“I watch Gale as (…) He could be my brother. (…) But we’re not related, at least not closely.” (Page 8.) this is the first description of Gale we get. Are you telling me we are supposed to ship them?
“There’s never been anything romantic between Gale and me. (…) He’s good looking, (…). You can tell by the way the girls whisper about him when he walks by in school that they want him. It makes me jealous but not for the reason people would think. Good hunting partners are hard to find.” (Page 18.)
“Medium height, sticky build, ashy blond hair that falls in waves over his forehead.” (Page 25). This is the first description of Peeta we get. And I just find it to be very factual. She has no feelings or opinions about his looks. She just observes them.
“…Peeta and me to shake hands. His are as solid and warm as those loaves of bread. Peeta looks me right in the eye and gives my hand what I think is meant to be a reassuring squeeze. Maybe it’s just a nervous spasm.” (Page 33.) Lol to this quote specifically. We learn about Peeta and Katniss’s previous interaction in childhood and Katniss talks about how she frequently caught him staring at her. She does not acknowledge this as him being interested in her, she only mentions that she feels like she owes him something.
“Finally, Gale is here and maybe there is nothing romantic between us, but when he opens his arms I don’t hesitate to go into them.” (Page 38.)
Okay those are just some quotes from the first four chapters. Idk if anyone finds this interesting. Let me know please. Should I continue posting as I read??
