I finally can verbalize my thoughts on why the Angel arm situation is so fucked up even if you don’t look at it through a lens of it being sexual assault. Knives completely disregards the autonomy of anyone hes In contact with. Even the dependent plants, who he sees as his sisters. But Vash-his own fucking brother who he claims to love- is not afforded any autonomy. Because when it comes down to it knives doesn’t care. The Angel arm incident is to directly show how powerless Vash is. That Vash isn’t even allowed control over his own powers, but Knives is. Knives violates Vash’s bodily autonomy and makes him go against his principles (which at the time are the only things he’s living for!!) as a show of power. A “look at this, your ideals mean nothing because you’re too weak to uphold them.”

I think this along with the very obvious metaphors for SA is what makes this scene so gut wrenching. It’s Vash trying to hang on to his personhood, and this is one of the very few times we see him do it. Vash barely ever actively fights to protect himself, he mainly just dodges and runs. Except for his fights with Knives and a couple of the Gung-ho-Guns. Vash is actively fighting and being overpowered and that’s why it’s so disturbing

media literacy (and why it's so hard to be a horror fan in 2024)

a lot of my friends are really into Mouthwashing right now and when I asked if I'd like it, a few people immediately told me there's really heavy themes of rape and that might be upsetting for me. But then I found out there was cannibalism which is a surefire way to get me into a piece of media and that made me consider getting into it again. Ultimately after reading a plot summary I decided not to play Mouthwashing, and it's weird to be waxing so much meta about a game I haven't played and don't plan to, but in having the conversation I thought a little bit more about that difference. How it's weird that I'm willing to consume a piece of media if people eat human flesh in it, but get so uncomfortable with rape due to personal boundaries and like

Is cannibalism worse than rape? isn't it kind of the same thing? What's the difference between consuming someone's body for sustenance and using someone's body for pleasure? And with media, is it possible to use something terrible for good purposes? To me the answer to the last question is obviously yes; I'm strongly of the opinion that there's no subject too dark to discuss in a story. But most people could agree that there's a "right" and "Wrong" way to tell a story. If you make a movie that lingers on long unnecessary shots of women's bodies, that's probably navel-gazey and weird, and viewers may rightfully side-eye you a little bit. But if you make a movie about the exploitation of women's bodies - say something like the X trilogy where most characters are pornstars - it becomes almost necessary to have boobs and butts left and right or else your story won't be realistic.

It's weird to live in a time of more dark media than ever, contrasted with less media literacy than ever. Horror and dark litfic are extremely popular genres, but a lot of their audience seems unwilling to engage with those genres past a surface level analysis of "thing bad"/"thing problematic" or "you can write about thing, but not like that." If you write about a Bad Thing, you have to make sure that the text explicitly condemns it. If you have a point of view character who wouldn't condemn it, you need to make sure that character dies at the end so that the audience comes away from your story with the proper moral lesson. All fairy tales need to have a moral at the end; all horror stories need to as well, or at least, that's what fandom would have you believe.

But where do we draw the line, right? Is it okay to talk about cannibalism because that's not something that really happens in the modern world (assuming you're a sheltered westerner that is), but not okay to talk about rape because that's still something that happens everywhere to the point that almost everyone knows a rape survivor? Is it okay for someone who has never experienced rape and/or SA to write about it? Do we need to necessitate pain as a prerequisite to examine it's aftermath? have my meds kicked back in yet or should I up my dosage again?

And asking again because I'm curious what people think: is cannibalism worse than rape?

i miss my ex and i don't know how to feel about it.

he wasn't good to me. he was the kind of man who didn’t listen when i said "no," touched me when i was sick and delirious and didn't want to be touched, didn't care to know me beyond the version of me he had in his head, treated me like i was just another side character in the grand bildungsroman of his life. which is... bad. i'm learning that it's bad. i'm learning to come to terms with the fact that he hurt me, perhaps irreparably. he changed me.

but i miss him. he was funny. he had the best kermit impression in the world. he felt a deep connection to birds; the first animal he ever had to bury was a sparrow he found dead in his backyard. he was nice. be bought me the most beautiful flowers. he always offered to hold my hand because my fingers were always cold. even when it was winter and he didn't have gloves and i did. he'd still cover my whole hand in his so mine would stay protected from the cold.

he liked joyce and shelley and faulkner and adichie. he liked house of leaves and old japanese indie games and the song can i call you rose. he could always talk his way out of a bind. he stood up for other people, even if he didn't do it in all the right ways. he rode his bike across the state and told me he loved me while lying, half delirious, in a cornfield in the middle of nowhere.

and i miss him. i miss the lines around his mouth when he smiled. i miss the softness of his hands. i miss getting pictures of the sunrise while i was just falling asleep. i miss long texts that always ended with a little saturn emoji and new poems in my inbox every week. i miss his smell - sandalwood and honey and oud, like a candle i once smelled crouched on a grocery store floor. i miss walking with him by the river, the way he first laughed when i was frightened by geese, then shielded me from them.

he has a job downtown now, and a dog named kevin. he lives in a brand new apartment i've never seen. i don't know how his grandparents are doing, or his elderly neighbor back home. or the fish in the stream by his father’s house. or his cat. i haven't heard a silly poem about a pelican in months.

i don't miss the press of his lips on my skin, or the tightness in my chest when i saw him come my way. i don't miss the way he touched me. or talked to me, sometimes, like i was nothing but a figment of his imagination. but i miss him. god. i miss him.
