Maybe it's the eternally distrustful loveless child in me but idk something about the way DC has been writing familial relationships in recent years rings so false to me. There's no room for the complex, nuanced, unnamed relationships Batman and Nightwing used to have, nothing like the warped mother-daughter-sister thing Barbara Gordon and Cass Cain had, nothing like Superboy's weird obsessive hero worship/bone-deep dread of his clone fathers or Max Mercury's weary undefined protectiveness of Bart or Wonder Woman's dogged loyalty to her little "sisters". Cause — for me, at least, I know I actively seek little moments of connection in stories; when I write or when I read it is to seek comfort. I think that's why DC has made this shift. Readers like me gravitated to those little warm moments, and DC noticed that we did without stopping to think about why.
But there's a point at which I notice diminishing returns of comfort from fluffy writing — it ceases to register as real. It's too good, too saccharine, too empty of any of the pain and frustration it takes to express genuine love for the other person. It's all hand-holding and no sweaty palms. It's so easy for someone to say they love you. It's so easy to see when it's all just words. And part of this is, yeah, bad writing; all that stuff about show not tell. They're trying to tell us these characters care about each other without giving us any real proof. but. idk. I need my love to be real. I need to feel the bones behind each embrace. I can't accept affection without struggling my way into it. Honestly I'd rather get a grim gritty Batman who forgets he HAS kids until they throw themselves into the line of fire than a milquetoast helicopter Batdad who tells his kids exactly what they mean to him without actively being in a state of bleeding out.

So recently Square Enix launched a new game where the premise is that the protagonist is the reluctant hero of a fantasy world they find themselves in, having been born and raised in New York. It recently got some loud pushback from people who were upset that protagonist... lemme check notes... sounds like a sassy New Yorker.
Fortunately, the actress has had the perfect attitude toward it:
Now, the game has not been getting spectacular reviews, and the reasons for that vary but I'm not here to talk about trend of critics (well meaning or not) raising standards for products say... starring a black woman and having a mostly female cast, or even about problem of Sacrificial Trash.
I want to talk about this as a good example when we talk about "protected by magic" outfits.
Frey is a New Yorker now blessed with magical power, she has never been trained in armor use, doesn't own armor and so... wears comfortable and practical clothes like you would expect. The whole look conveys an interesting look of a modern person with practical sensibilities in a fantasy world.
She has two main kinds of magic items - cloaks and necklaces. Both items that can be worn over clothes without sacrificing practicality.
She also has a unique, widely considered feminine option for store her magical powers - her nails.
As well as being one of the most innovative expansions into fantasy magic I've seen in mainstream for a while it really also goes a long way to showcase what, so often, is the actual crippling flaw with the "doesn't need it because magic/badass/etc" rhetoric.
Not because you can't have an interesting design that avoids armor etc, but because it's pretty much always the same nonsense with going overboard with designing pseudo-porn and then trying to justify it after the fact rather than exploring possibilities and playing with ideas about what x would mean for y.
Also can we please have more games with character designs like this in them, I'm still thinking about how cool this boss intro was:

Saw you wanted drawing requests so I have a few ideas for you!
Wyll taking over the cooking from Gale for once then immediately regretting it when he sees that what they have to work with is 23 heads of garlic, 5 bottles of cheap wine, a single lemon, 15 stale baguettes, and a fish head. Now he sees why Gale complains about cooking duty yet always insists on doing it so no one else has to.
(Inspired by a fanfic) Shadowheart using a detect thoughts potion and deciding to see what her party members are thinking and Gale and Karlach and Wyll are all thinking about food, Astarion is thinking about what Wyll tastes like, tav/Durge is thinking of stabbing people interspersed with 'wait no that's bad don't do that', and Lae'Zel is having extremely gay thoughts about Shadowheart but is trying to resist acting on them.
Gale figuring out how to enchant some gloves and a coat to be heat resistant for Karlach to wear so she can hug everyone even with the burning engine. Karlach pulling him and Shart into a crushing hug ready to cry.
Shadowheart holding up imp bing bong saying 'look at him, how can you resist such a cute face?' And the imp in question is hideous and snarling at Lae'Zel.
Take your pic!
Are you surprised I chose the last one on the list? I hope not XD
The High Rollers D&D streams forever altered my life path, I will admit it 😳🙏 JUSTICE FOR BING BONG !!
