Animation Night 159: Armitage III
Good evening animation devotees! It is once again Sunday, the day of animation.
Apologies for the late start this evening. It’s been tricky to run everything while I’m in Glasgow, but on the other hand, tonight’s subject comes at the suggestion of my wonderful host. Since it’s so late, no lengthy intro today... by my standards, anyway x3
Tumblr media
So, 1995 was a big year in anime. Ghost in the Shell happened. The story behind it is fascinating and I barely told any of it back on AN39. Production I.G. had recently come into existence, the synthesis of anime studio I.G. Tatsunoko  and the Headgear collective, which had come together on the Patlabor movies. It managed to bring all its elements together to create a really novel synthesis of all its elements: deeply atmospheric, exceptionally animated, and with enough of the crazy autistic passion of Shirow’s manga shining through to give it a dimension missing in the drier Patlabor movies that came before. It became a reference point for just about anything even vaguely in the vicinity of cyberpunk to come...
And Evangelion happened. The impact of Anno’s unification of psychological drama, body horror, conspiracies and robots is maybe even greater. Even beyond its direct aesthetic influences, or inspiring the word moe, its sekaikei plot became a template for anime stories in all sots of genres. I wrote a bunch about Eva back on AN18, but of course there is so much more to dive into.
Tonight our subject is another cyberpunk robot story from 1995, a project of AIC - veterans of the world of OVAs. They’re behind the invention of hentai anime with Cream Lemon in 1984 (AN69), they made the iconic 80s robot ova Bubblegum Crisis, and at the start of the 1990s, they were the place where The Hakkenden experimented with the devices that would become the core of 90s animation (AN 122).
Tumblr media
Armitage III is another cyberpunk robot-focused anime - but when we say cyberpunk it’s in the literary sense too, with overt allusion to Neuromancer. And also Lovecraft. It’s a Pinocchio-type story about the line between robots and humans, set on a Mars colony which has recently discovered the existence of ‘third type’ robots which are superficially identical to humans and gone a bit nuts about it. ‘Armitage’ refers to protagonist Naomi Armitage, one of a duo of cops who are trying to contain the chaos - but Naomi is herself one of these third type androids. There’s some rather wacky gender shit with Earth having a ‘feminist’ society motivating more men emigrate to Mars, and also robot pregnancy which is a subject rarely touched on in these sexy robot stories.
But also it’s mostly a chance to bask in that 90s anime aesthetic. Like its contemporaries, expect something dark and moody and full of fascinating designs and intricate mechanical animations. Character designs are detailed and volumetric, but there’s also an element of the spiky stylisation of e.g. Gunnm, especially as our protagonist starts to take on some upgrades.
Tumblr media
Rather than write more, I think I’d best just hurry up and get the ball rolling while it’s still technically Sunday.
Tonight the plan is to show the four episodes of the OVA. They got compiled into a movie (Poly-Matrix) but I hear it is overly compressed and hard to follow. There’s a sequel, Dual-Matrix, but I generally hear it’s not great and since it’s so late, I’m just gonna watch the original OVA.
We’ll be going live in just a minute at twitch.tv/canmom. I’d love to see you there!!

The Aniverse Twitter account (the anime wing of the JP NBC Universal store) has posted that complete Blu-ray box sets featuring remastered video will be released for the classic Pioneer OVA titles, Taiyou no Fune Sol Bianca and Armitage III.
The Taiyou no Fune Sol Bianca BD set hits shelves on October 28th 2022 and will include remastered versions of all 6 episodes of the series as well as the series OST. Details here. A B6 acrylic art piece will be the Aniverse bonus item.
The Armitage III BD set will go on sale November 30th 2022 and will feature the original 4-episode OVA, the “Poly-Matrix” cut, the Dual-Matrix feature, and two soundtrack CDs. Details here.  A B6 acrylic art piece will be the Aniverse bonus item.
I have a soft spot for both these OVA series so I am personally excited AF for these releases. I hope the remastering meets expectations and that they also get a US release at some point. I know a heck of a lot of American fans whose gateway OVA was Armitage III (and to a lesser extent, Sol Bianca: The Legacy).

if you want: cyberpunk / 90′s style / great synth heavy music / interesting ideas although not quite fleshed out / action
Armitage III is a cult classic cyberpunk 4 episode OVA. I’m also going to mention a bit about Poly-Matrix which is just a summary movie.
The focal point of Armitage III is, of course, robots and androids. Humanity used robots called “First type” to terraform Mars and later on their improved versions the “Second types” became an integral part of society for easy work (receptionists, retail workers etc.). The Second types come as close to your usual robot in media as possible. With no feelings or individual thoughts, their only purpose is to do their jobs. This pisses of the general populus of Mars because the robots “Took their jooooobs”. Hatecrimes against robots becomes commonplace.
Anyway, I wanted to set-up this anime cause the anime itself doesn’t really do that or explain much about the backstory of Mars. Our story stars 2 police officers, Armitage and Ross Sylibus who transfers over from Earth. In the 1st few minutes we immediately have a gunfight and find out that a famous musician has been murdered AND she was actually a robot. This stirs up a lot of things as there never have been robots as advanced as her. We find out that they’re “Third types”, the most humanlike robots created... and someone is out to kill them all.
I do think a lot of people have their rose coloured glasses on when thinking of this anime, specifically the story. I got the urge to immediately read the wikipedia page of the plot after finishing the OVAs because there were so many things unexplained, it left me with too many unanswered questions. For example, the reason for the killing of the Third types is mentioned in such a throwaway and REALLY awkward conversation where you have to jump through hoops to arrive at the conclusion the anime was trying to convey... it’s just not good writing. The pacing also has many problems. I did enjoy each episode and they do keep your attention but there are a lot of scenes with nothing happening then the fight scenes are kinda awkward and you can’t quite see what the hell is happening.
This anime is basically carried by its animation, music and atmosphere. The animation has that good old 90′s vibe (because it was made in the 90′s, duh) and the music is a nice blend of synthwave and city pop.
And shortly about Poly-Matrix: the movie cut out about 30 minutes of the original OVAs and also added a few minutes of new footage. I personally liked the changes and the new scenes as those, combined with the removal of mostly filler scenes (even if they were good) helped the pacing immensely.
That’s it! This anime does invite conversation about its theme but that’d be spoiler territory so I’ll just stop here.

Recommend: HELL Yeah! | Yes | Eh??? | Nope | This anime killed my parents
