can I ask about what the drama around "palace of illusions" is about and why it's bad?
Hey! Sure thing. Lemme list my problems with the book :-
1) The author presents Karna as some tragic hero compelled to be in the company of Duryodhana who clearly committed multiple murder attempts, went on to sexually harrass his sister-in-law and troubled another woman during the Ghosha yatra. Karna was NOT an outcaste. He was a Suta— meaning one with a Brahmin mother and a Kshatriya father. Adhiratha, Karna's adoptive father, was a wealthy man as he was Bhishma's charioteer. Keep in mind that charioteers used to play important roles in warriors' lives - as advisers, close friends and well-wishers. Krishna was the charioteer of Arjuna. Karna had all the opportunities the Pandavas didnt. He had parents who loved him, while the Pandavas were left halfly orphaned with the death of Pandu and Madri. Veda Vyasa describes Karna as "the trunk of the tree of adharma".
2) The Karna Draupadi ship is bullshit because Karna called the latter a whore during the disrobing sequence as well as presented the idea of "there should be no clothes on servants." Yes, Karna was the one who suggested her public sexual assault. She had blood stains on her garment and was dragged into the court of nefarious men by her hair. People who blame her for the assault inflicted on her are sick and need serious psychological help. You cannot defend attempted rape as one with working braincells.
3) So, shipping a victim with her abuser is not fun y'all. This is not some mentally unstable wattpad dark romance. It's itihāsa. The true history of Bhāratavarsha. Let's draw the line. She was an ekavastraa (meaning a woman in a single cloth, as she was menstruating) during the attempt at disrobing, and the man who called for it shouldn't be hailed. Karna also lied to Parashurama of his caste due to which he got cursed, had an unhealthy obsession with Arjuna and because he wanted to kill him for competition, Drona did not provide him with the knowledge of celestial weapons.
4) It is an ignominy against Lady Draupadi to ship her with anyone apart from her husbands because clearly, the Mahabharata says that she's Indra's wife Shachi while the Pandavas are the cursed five Indras of different kalpas. It is . . . not nice to ship one's wife with another man. It is creepy. Draupadi is one of the panchakanya, one of the five pious women whose names if chanted with sincerity wash off one's sins. She expresses her pride over her husbands multiple times in the text because all of them cherish her to no end. Yudhishthira does not hesitate on the fact that Draupadi is the five brothers' fortune, calls her ‘Kalyani’. Bhima kills Keechaka for her, threatening the revealing of their identities. Arjuna becomes Brihannala and spends most of the time near her during the incognito. In the book, however, the Pandavas do not give a damn about her. Yikes.
5) The book says that Draupadi faced prejudice because of her dark skin. I call bullshit again because Madreya Nakula, Partha Arjuna, Krishnatmika Devi Rukmini according to the Harivamsha, Devi Shri Jambavati (who is said to have a blue lotus like complexion), and lastly Shri Rama and Shri Krishna themselves are dark according to our scriptures. And, none of them faced discrimination because of it. Kanha is in fact called "Bhuvansundar" - the most beautiful one on the earth while Draupadi herself is hailed as one of the most beautiful women canonically.
6) Draupadi was never attracted to Karna. Neither did she pine for him, as the author portrays. Sheesh. Please please, we do whatever with human characters. But with divine ones, you have to be careful with the message you get across. This book is saying that ancient india was casteist and colorist, literally the times when the son of a fisherwoman, Veda Vyasa became a Brahmin and the said fisherwoman went on to become a queen mother of one of the most influential dynasties back then. Krishna was raised a cowherd, though a prince. He went on to become the most erudite diplomat and established Dvaraka, which was en engineering marvel as it was constructed on reclaimed land.
7) According to the author . . . Draupadi felt something more than just friendship for Krishna too. Heavens, I can't do this. Let's normalise a man and a woman being just friends now, shall we? Krishna is Mahavishnu, he's not supposed to invoke romantic feelings in Draupadi who is Shachi, Indra's wife. Indra and Upendra (Vishnu) are brothers, since Vāmanadeva was born of Mata Aditi's womb, who is Indra's mother and of all the Adityas' too.
#draupadi#Mahabharata#pandavas#karna#the palace of illusions#chitra banerjee divakaruni#reblogging my own post with edits because i missed multiple points in the last version#do not sympathise with abusers ffs

Just some crappy marker drawings of earlier, pre-JTTW and FSYY versions of Nezha.
(Okay, I drew JTTW and FSYY Nezha too. But the final results kinda suck, so I'm putting them aside for a later redraw.)
Left: Nalakuvara the original, an Indian demigod and son of Kubera the Yaksha king. In Ramayana, he cursed Ravana after he assaulted Nalakuvara's first wife. In the Bhagavata Purana, he was turned into an Arjuna tree together with his brother by the sage Narada; they were later freed by Krishna.
I'm not really familiar with depictions of Nalakuvara in Indian art, so his design is a mixture of Indian shadow puppetry and modern artworks showing Krishna freeing him and his brother.
Right: Nazha Jufaluo, the first sinicized version of Nalakuvara. He's the third son of Vaisravana, a.k.a. Pishamen and the carrier of his father's pagoda.
A Tang dynasty ritual text, 北方毗沙门天王随军护法仪轨, also mentions that he'd hit monks over the head with a vajra for harboring evil thoughts.
Both versions are very much fierce adult demigods.
Left: Nana Deva, a syncretic fusion of Nalakuvara and Krishna. @ruibaozha has a post that goes into details.
Right: Nezha from the Grand Compendium of Deities of the Three Religions (三教搜神大全). This design is mostly based on the original illustration in the book.
His Grand Compendium backstory becomes the prototype for both JTTW and FSYY Nezha——the "slaying dragons" part, and for FSYY only, the "Killing Lady Shiji's son (changed into a disciple in FSYY) and Shiji herself" part.
The embroidered ball is one of Nezha's weapons in Grand Compendium, JTTW, and Journey to the South. In JTTS specifically, his embroidered ball contains 16 demon kings he has subdued, and he can release them during battle to fight on his behalf.
...Kinda like a Pokeball. Thus, this quick doodle:
"Nezha Conquers the Dratini", shadow puppetry style.

Chapter 30: shots fired
I walked into Gales's training room clapping, "Not bad for the first spar in years between my best student and my greatest treasure."
I walked over proceeding to lift Albert off of Gale. He seemed lighter than normal, maybe the angelis virus was still active. Albert looked quite sternly at me and sighed.
"You should be resting my dearheart," Albert said leaning against me, holding my hand, and caressing my cheek.
"Get a room you two," Gale said walking out into the vehicle bay.
That was when the comms alert went off, "Nighthawk to Galeforce and Phoenix, agent Archer is down shot fired from tree line of the quarantine area." I snarled and my eyes flared bright freezing blue.
Gale looked back at me with a worried expression, "You OK, T?"
"Gods, why can I not catch a FUCKING BREAK TODAY?!?!?" I shouted sprinting up to my office, grabbing my bow, arrows, and black wakizashi. With my samurai edge on my side, I raced back down to the vehicle bay.
"Come on we're running it'll be quieter than the ATVs or bikes," Gale said exiting the vehicle bay to the outside.
"I will come with as much as Tabitha's assistant has grown on me I feel I should be there. " Albert said following Gale grabbing his trench coat from the training room and rushing to catch up with Gale. I was right behind him popping a viral activator pill. I felt my body's energy surge.
"Let's go." I took off towards the quarantine zone. I was screaming in my mind for being so careless. I activated my comm collar and called up Lupo.
"What do you need Tabitha?" Karena asked worried, "I heard the earlier transmission. We can mobilize if needed."
"No I need you to bring the medical transport to the quarantine zone," I said speeding ahead of Albert. There was electricity in my step and worry as well.
Shortly we saw Nighthawk and Arjuna lying on the ground.
"G....get down" Nighthawk coughed holding Archer up against his chest. Archer was shot in his lower abdomen. A tampon was haphazardly shoved into the wound.
I got low and pulled out my bow. The eighty-five draw weight was difficult but worth it. Notching my arrow I noticed the smell of gunpowder and a slight flash in the corner of my eye, "EVERYONE GET DOWN!" I ordered as a bullet whizzing past me struck Gale in the shoulder.
"FUCK!" Gale shouted falling to his knees.
I quickly let my arrow fly striking the tree where the shot came from.
I quickly switched from my bow to my wakizashi and quickly charged the tesla coil so I could have a stunning blade. Albert grabbed my hand but with a quick jolt, I dashed towards the tree line.
"TABITHA! GET BACK!!" Albert yelled and I jumped back as a bullet lodged itself in the ground.
"Phoenix Corps. more like special needs Corps." A voice said over the comm link.
I picked up the bullet and fear pooled in my stomach, the way it was shattered indicated it was a hollow-tipped round. Another shot rang out this one grazed Gale's cheek the bullet shattering on contact barely missing his eye. He fell back
"Damn, I missed again." The voice coming through the comms said.
"Come out you coward!" I shouted.
The next thing I knew an explosion ripped through the trees and I saw a cloaked figure running back toward the old Umbrella base.
I'm going to find this bastard and make him pay dearly for harming Arjuna and Gale. I stopped in my tracks, Juna! I didn't hear a mag change he must have been shot with the hollow-tipped rounds as well.
"ARJUNA! GALE!" I ran back to them, Nighthawk clutching Archer in his arms crying.
"No please No, not my Juna," I said falling next to Archer his breathing was ragged, and blood was pouring from the tampon that Nighthawk used to plug the wound. I unattached my med kit and grabbed a few cans of first aid spray. I tossed one to Gale while I removed the object that was plugging Archer's wound.
"I'm sorry June. I'll be faster next time." I sprayed his wound and watched as it slowly closed.
"Ugh, Tabitha? What happened?" Archer said waking up.
"You rest Juna. Lupo is en route with the medical transport. You were shot with a hollow point in your lower abdomen I don't think it's fatal. It's still a serious injury though." I said worried as Lupo arrived.
"You get going boss I'll get these two into medical quickly." She said pulling out a stretcher.
"Gale, load up with Archer you both need to be seen and have those bullet fragments dislodged from ya'lls bodies, " I ordered.
"Got it, boss lady," Gale said hopping in the transport.
I walked over to Nighthawk and handed him my bow and arrows. I would barely be able to see in the forest or even worse the umbrella facility.
"Someone who dares harm my assets before I even have a chance to test them," Albert growled.
"Let's go, I have a bad feeling about this," I said holstering my Beretta and sprinting toward where the figure ran off.
"Tabitha wait!" Wesker shouted taking after me.
I slid down the hill and I was right. Just what I was afraid of, the umbrella facility was in my sights. I slid and stopped right *in front of the base. Albert ran up behind me and stood in front of me.
"What has gotten into you dearheart? You have never been the one to charge in not thinking of the outcome. That is more of your brother's thing."
"I'm scared, my love. Gale and Arjuna are my closest friends. I feel like this is my fault in some way." I sighed and slid through the broken-down doorway.
"That man was certainly after Chambers. We will track him down and get some answers for you." Albert said kicking down the broken-apart rubble.
"Then let's proceed with caution this place is," I got cut off by cement falling from the ceiling," falling apart..."
"Just be careful my lotus," Albert said
"I will Wesk," I said stepping forward, and like clockwork, I fell through a hole in the floor.
Hi there sorry for the short chapter but it will be worth it for the chapters that are coming up happy Halloween my name is Silfarianhawk and I'm not so far away

there's so many ideas I feel like would be better expressed in drawing than writing (if only I could draw decently enough for my own standards lol) but one thing I would definitely take a drawing of over writing it is the mental image hovering in my mind of jiang ziya sitting under a willow tree with a book in his lap, with arjuna next to him playing something on a veena, and ofc oberon is also there curled up with his head on jiang ziya's lap and sleeping.
#lulas's randomness#also I feel like I tend to imagine this in much the same style as gufeng media artworks are#so that would be. even harder to really portray for me#anyway I'm throwing this idea out here so it's not occupying my brain so much#and so that other people can see it too if they want#jiang ziya#jiang ziya (fgo)#taigong wang#taigong wang (fgo)#jiang ziya (fate)#arjuna#arjuna (fate)#arjuna (fgo)#oberon#oberon vortigern#oberon (fgo)#oberon (fate)#fgo#fate grand order

@idlebirdsparagon I am KISSING YOUR FACE as we speak, I've had so many thoughts about this, and I kept going back and realizing YOU'D ALREADY COVERED THEM cuz you're so thorough and you're literally CORRECT ABOUT EVERYTHING, oh mine god!!!!! So this might be a bit redundant for points you already made, but I cannot stop myself from flailing, so here we are!
I want to muse on the fact that Ram is very very HINDU. He wears janeu, he swears on Ma Godavari's name, Sita draws a tilak on his forehead to bless his journey, and it's made very obvious that his faith is of supreme importance and guidance to him.
{Gonna go out on a limb here and analyze Ram's motivations through my own limited understanding of The Mahabharata. Do correct me if I get anything wrong or portray these themes with any disrespect. I'm trying my best, but this is ultimately out of my lane.}
In the Bhagavad Gita (which Ram recites, in Sanskrit, from memory) Krisha basically tells Arjuna that his dharma (duty) is the most important thing to hold onto during wartime; not emotions, attachments, or apprehension. Arjuna does not want to fight the friends and family members he has on the opposing side of the war, but Krishna counsels him to rid himself of "passion and hatred." Ram has spent his entire life internalizing this: The ideal warrior is one who "neither loves nor hates." One who has no attachments and permits no inaction.
Ram has spent fifteen years making peace with the inevitability of casualties during this war-- himself among them, if need be. Just like you said, Shai! He'll throw himself in harm's way at the merest chance that it'll further his goal. And he frankly already experienced the ultimate loss as a child, so Krishna was proven RIGHT!!! Krishna basically told Arjuna to stop handwringing over casualties and just rise up & fight like a man! (Problematic king, lol.) Ram has spent his whole life doing just this! It's baked into every action he takes, most of all in his decision to betray and arrest Bheem. He is prepared to sacrifice his loyalty to his people, his love for Bheem, his own physical safety, his own LIFE!
This IS different from how Bheem prepares to die. Bheem's attachments GUIDE his self-sacrifice! His passion and love are at the CENTER of his role as protector! You can see this mirrored heartbreakingly in how Ram and Bheem fight one another: Ram: Dead silent, cold eyes cast downward, calculating the most efficient way to subdue his opponent as quickly as fucking possible. Bheem: Growling and yelling, ROARING, even, emoting every blow, just trying to get away so he can save Malli. Bheem is 100% passion. He is not bound to the same concept of dharma.
The Gond people have a nature religion, which Bheem invokes during the flogging. He draws strength from "the land that gave birth to [him], the trees that give [him] air to breathe, and the Gond Tribe that chose [him] as their protector." If those aren't attachments, I don't know what are!!!!
And to be clear, neither of these motivations are superior to the other! They just represent different approaches to, in this case, revolutionary work. And they absolutely inform how Ram and Bheem come to realize their love for each other, and how willing they are to risk it all by revealing themselves to each other: Bheem; on the night he believes he may die. Ram; NEVER. Not even after his redemption when he frees Malli.
I'M GOING FUCKING INSANE WHY IS THIS MOVIE SO RICH WITH CHARACTER DEPTH AND SYMBOLISM!?!?!?!?!?
@enigma-the-mysterious @jezebelgoldstone @umbrulla @mortallylouddinosaur @gifseafins
Musings On Sacrifice And Happiness Regarding Ram & Bheem
@hag-lad this snowballed a bit and took me a few days, but I was not making empty promises in the tags; it is done.
All right folks. This little analysis was inspired by this post by @enigma-the-mysterious and is an exploration of Ram and Bheem's attitudes toward their mortality and potential deaths. Neither of these two knuckleheads (affectionate) seem even the least bit apprehensive at the thought of their own deaths and I want to unpack that.
Content warning for talk of death, and disregard for personal safety, as per the movie.
Bheem: "I'll die with pride."
[Note: this section will be a little less of a deep dive into subtext and deeper meaning/conjecture and more a general explanation of the text, mainly because Bheem, barring the necessity of his Akhtar persona, functions narratively as the "what you see is what you get/I said what I meant" type. But it's fun to talk about him, and I'm making a culminating point at the end of this so I need this here for the sake of ✨️balance✨️]
Given his role as the protector for the Gond people, I would argue that it's reasonable to assume Bheem is, at any given point, ready to sacrifice himself for those he considers to be under his protection, whether directly a part of his tribe or not, especially based on the description of the protector given by Venkat Avadhani; yes Bheem is often likened to a tiger within the fandom (I do this too), but I think the imagery presented of a man willing to break a tiger's teeth and pry open its jaws to save someone is incredibly visceral and indicative of how far Bheem is willing to go as just one person.
Bheem lives with the knowledge that there's always a high chance that he will die as a natural outcome of his role among his people, as evidenced by how he doesn't promise his return when comforting Ram, saying instead "If we get out safely, I'll come meet you again."
And if he dies for the sake of ensuring that others get to live, that's a net positive for him; his purpose as protector fulfilled.
His entire line to Ram before he leaves to rescue Malli is a verbal acknowledgement of how much love he holds for his friend and an assurance to Ram that he'll have comfort in his final moments should they come to pass; he's not actively seeking to die, and he'll do his best to avoid dying, but he won't deem it an untimely tragedy should it happen. And having forged such a close friendship with Ram, that's another net positive he's been party to, so he can die with pride having done his job and holding the memory of Ram in his heart in his final moments.
Ram: "I will die gladly, Uncle."
I'm not gonna ease into this idea, I'm too eager so I'm just going to lay it out: Alluri Rama Raju does not live for himself and does not pursue his mission with his wellbeing in mind. Ram operates under the notion of being an instrument of the revolution and, even in times of his most heinous acts, regards himself as such rather than as a person. This is ultimately a topic for another dissection, but to tie it into the point of this post: when a tool breaks, do you weep? Does the tool?
I'm not going to wax poetic about material loss versus emotional loss; there is a nuance there that begs for a much longer word count. However, I will underline the point I'm making about Ram and how he regards his life.
Ram is given the mantle of being the weapon of the revolution at a very young age and we are told that he has worked for 15 years toward his (and his father's) goal; if you subscribe to the ideology that your life is that of a tool meant to achieve a goal, rather than as evidence of a living being, how will that change how you regard that life? Is it something precious outside of the mission?
Ram has a severe reckless disregard for his personal safety; jumping into a throng of protesters with nothing but a lathi as his weapon/protection being the biggest example of this.
(look at him go. wild. i'm armchair diagnosing him as clinically unwell.)
Ram is well aware of his prowess as a weapon and that gives him the confidence and internal permission to take wild risks without a moment's hesitation; he also knows that, ultimately, a weapon, if broken beyond repair, is replaceable; while he isn't looking to break himself, he certainly isn't being precious with his existence either.
And I would posit that he functions on a day to day basis under the need to accomplish his mission, get the weapons for his people and expel the British; beyond that? I wouldn't put money on Ram having planned for the future, or even having thought of making it to whatever future might be there for him. Though this idea is more of a headcanon than anything else; feel free to agree with or dismiss it as you like.
Then comes his ideological shift in the face of Bheem's rousing defiance of the Empire, and Ram's participation in it, in front of the people of Delhi at the whipping post.
Ram is forced to reckon with the fact that in his bid to be the weapon that brings about the downfall of the British Empire, he has effectively put that weapon into the hands of the enemy and allowed it to be wielded against the people he has been trying to liberate, and he knows this. The thought has been building for some time, as evidenced by his letter to Sita, but being ordered to flog Bheem expedited the process of cementing it as truth, with the final acknowledgement of that truth happening during Komuram Bheemudo.
But what to do with that realization?
What do you do when your purpose is thrown at your feet and you're forced to look at the culmination of your life's efforts as something that has been horribly corrupted and been rendered ultimately impotent? Let's me be specific with this rhetorical bit: What is Ram meant to do when looking at his guilt made manifest in the wounds littering Bheem's body, put there by his hand? Guilt that has been looming over his actions since his final shot in his village at his father's back?
(do you ever think about the fact that they show us the moment Ram stopped genuinely smiling until the day he met Bheem?...i do)
After the flogging Ram says Bheem is a volcano; I want to take that metaphor and turn it in my hands a bit to say I'd regard Bheem more as the catalyst for the eruption of people in Delhi, the introduction of magma into the chamber that triggers the previous buildup to come rushing forth; again another analysis for another time. Suffice it to say Bheem's actions and defiance in the face of the British and his torture incite immediately and tangible results in a way that Ram's methods from the inside never have and never would have been able to.
Here's where I'm going to bring it back to the idea of Ram and his happiness to potentially die for Bheem
Ram pins his hopes of a successful revolution onto Bheem. He doesn't seem the type to excuse failure in any capacity in regard to himself, and he has just been made painfully and undeniably aware that what he has been doing for the past 4 years has not been working; time to effectively decommission himself as the weapon. And if he dies, well, such is the way of things, no? Ram is beyond skilled in a great many things, especially combat, but I doubt he's ever regarded himself as invincible, he gets hurt too badly and far too often for that to make sense. Luck eventually runs out. He can do what needs to be done, he has every confidence in that, but he's aware of the possibility that doing so will come at the cost of his life. And with all that he has done up to the point of his about face after Bheem's flogging, he's more than ready to pay that price in his own blood.
Ram's life is not his, at least not by his estimation, and if he can keep Bheem alive, his own life is fine to be forfeit. He can die happy knowing Bheem still lives, with the added bonus of knowing the revolution will continue in his absence. At least in death he will have successfully done something good for his people and country.
To Summarize:
Both men are at peace with the idea of their respective deaths: Ram ultimately because he doesn't see his death as a loss if Bheem is still alive, and Bheem because he doesn't see his death as a tragedy if it means saving the life of another, especially with the knowledge that he can hold his friendship with Ram in his heart as he dies.
Though of course, within the context of the movie, neither of them has to die for the other, and I like to think that after the events of the movie they will gladly keep each other alive and never even think to regard doing so as a burden.
And that's where I'll end this analysis. If you made it this far, or just skipped to the summary, thank you for reading!

knives in the backs of martyrs.
[RANK UP CHALLENGE: DRABBLE]
at first, she pretends she doesn't see it.
when she dragged herself outside for fresh air after sleeping all day on the couch, she did not expect to see it. towering over every building in sight, branches extend up and outwards into the sky. an array of golds & pinks coloring the cracks in the 'bark' as it pulsated with power. the sight alone makes her blood run cold, sends a shiver down her spine that is not born from the cool evening air. no, Ritsuka knows what caused it-- what has made her frozen in both shock and fear. it’s a Tree of Emptiness. in Spirale. in this place she sometimes thought of as a home away from home (but always a place she could never stay long, a gilded cage.). it confirms a longtime suspicion-- worry, even. when she first arrived here. back then, it was only the thought of a Singularity and not the horror of a Lostbelt. but there is that tree. there is the fog surrounding this place, like those stormwalls. and....she is the only one that sees it. why else would the city remain quiet and at peace at such a sight? it is hidden from them. of course it is and it would remain so. ( her command spells hum with a familiar feeling. another sign. ) it seems that whatever had been hiding it has decided: no more. and now, she is faced with a choice. a choice with only one answer.
for the first day, she pretends.
it’s difficult. those who know her look at her with concern, able to tell so easily that something was not right. she doesn’t like lying to them.
‘ what’s wrong, senpai? you look pale... ‘
‘ master. sleep is essential to the upkeep of cognitive functions. do you require assistance in achieving it?
‘ the pews are quite comfortable. i can assure that you will not be disturbed. ‘
she would always shrug it off, play it up with a smile, blame it on work. and yet, every second of the day, the sight of that tree would be right there, haunting the edge of her sight. she was playing a fool’s game, going on as she was. she pretends, but it’s pointless. Ritsuka knows this. she knows that her actions are only prolonging the inevitable, clinging onto some misplaced hope that it would go away if she left it be. that it would act as those Singularities that sprung up after the world was bleached, something that would vanish in time, needing no intervention. but even then, she couldn’t leave it be. any suggestion was always met with ‘ you know i can’t do that.’ and who better to know herself than her? so, she pretends. for a little while longer, she goes in with this ‘life’ here. ( like in Russia, she feigns ignorance. but this is not a waiting game for when the realization would tear her two. she already knew it from the start and it saves her that break. but only that. )
for one week, she acts as if nothing as wrong.
-----------------------------
it’s been a long time since she last summoned a Servant. the flow of mana and surge of presence as they manifest is a familiar one to her, but even so, it feels....almost foreign, in a way. there was six; enough to handle the tree-- Rider: Achilles. Archer: Arjuna. Saber: Arturia Alter. Assassin: King Hassan. Berserker: Vlad. Ruler: Sherlock Holmes -- enough to bring this Lostbelt down and put an end to it.
( guilt jabs at her heart, piercing it without remorse. put an end to it? yes. yes, i have to put an end to it. )
-----------------------------
she is thankful that she did not see them before she left. those she has come to call friends, people she is close to, ones she does her best to at least look out for. those Servants she knew were busy doing whatever it was they occuppied their time with: business, fun, simply relaxing and enjoying a life without the worry of war. familiar faces she had spoken to once in awhile, but never really knew, continued on as they did. she had spotted Yelena from behind, traversing the Star Trail hand in hand with that former enemy of Ritsuka’s. they looked peaceful; happy. she had even spotted him on a few occassions, reading some (probably) boring book under the sun. ironic, she thought. this would be the second time, wouldn’t it? destruction at her hands. she almost laughed at that.
and then there was Mashu, who had fallen asleep, curled up with Fou nestled in her arms. Ritsuka knows she’s been making her worried sick, as best as the Shielder had tried to hide it. not just with...this, but everything before. Dr. Roman had said how hiding the truth from her was wrong. would he say that now, she wonders? that now the truth she was hiding was far more damaging than anyone could know? ( would you still want me to tell her? ) she had covered Mashu with a blanket before leaving the house for the last time, taking care to brush aside the girl’s bangs and placing her glasses on the bedside table.
a bit rude, wasn’t it? a bit cowardly, even, to use the cover of night to leave without questions from her, from anyone. to them, it was just another day in the city, another day of life. they didn’t know. they didn’t see it. and it’s better that way, Ritsuka thinks. better that they die without knowing the truth of it, without feeling the pain of it. it’s why she picked the dark, with only the stars as her witness, to do this.
at least this can be the one mercy she can give them.
-----------------------------
the tree falls.
not the way it does in the forest. no, this disintegrates, crumbling from the top down. out of the six Servants, only two are left standing as the battle draws to a close. her body is beyond its limit and yet, still it stands. the adrenaline is the only thing keeping her upright as she watches the beginning of the end. this Lostbelt was collapsing. the very thing holding it together, the Tree of Emptiness, is no more, leaving only that same, gaping hole at the center of it all. the sky cracks like fractured glass, misplacing the stars and splitting the sight of the moon in two. she watches. she watches it all. unlike Russia, there is no melody playing. unlinke Scandinavia, there is no gentle wind. there is only the silence and it is deafening.
she’s tired.
she doesn’t know when her legs give out on her, nor when she eneded up being carried by Vlad, but she cannot find the strength to ask . the earth itself rumbles with quakes as piece by piece, the Lostbelt -- and everything in it -- ceases to exist. she can faintly hear Arjuna speaking to da Vinci from the Shadow Border ( where was it at, again? why did she forget..?) but she can’t make out the words clearly. it all sounds as if she is in a tunnel and their voices are echoing from an end she can’t find.
she wants to leave. she wants to be back in the Shadow Border now, back in her bed within it, and to collapse into a dreamless slumber. no matter how uncomfortable it can be, her weary body has never cared. as long as it had a place to rest, that was all that mattered. she wants to sleep and sleep and sleep this dream-turned-nightmare away, until it’s nothing more than a hazy memory. (but it would never be a hazy memory. she remembered far too well. always.) she cannot say for them to hurry-- it takes too much effort. at best, Ritsuka can only keep her head still against the Berserker’s shoulder in silence.
she can hardly keep her eyes open, lids fluttering as she struggles to keep a grasp on being awake. she needs to see this; needs to see the end of Spirale. she owed that to each and every fragment of history, every world, that has been culled and this city was no different. ( she wishes it was. it would hurt less. if only she had known from the start.) no.... no it was different. she always knew she would have blood on her hands. Patxi had told her she would never be able to pretend otherwise. but never did she think the blood would be like this; not just that of strangers, people simply living their lives, but of friends too. and as she forces her eyes to open, to focus, everything is....blurry. as if she's deep underwater, unable to reach the surface. her cheeks feel wet. was it blood? tears? she can’t tell. she can’t see straight and that is more worrisome than anything else. she has to see.
no. let me....let me see.....
there’s an encroaching darkness. it dims the edges of her sight, slowly smothering her conciousness despite her efforts to fight it back.
stay....awake. i need-- i need to....please....why....?
she can’t think straight. her thoughs are fragmented. mismatched words and feelings. too much to make sense and too little to understand, it leaves her floundering for something, anything, to latch onto it. but the only thing found is a pull too strong for her to resist. like Aphrodite's song, she has no choice but to fall under its spell--
-- fall and sink further into the darkness, letting it swallow her whole.

Targrin, Act 1: Ambush
(Hey, so I’ve had this story under wraps for a while, while I confirmed with @pocket-raptor and @murellow-farts that the writing of their characters was acceptable.Since the first chapter is just my characters though, I figure it’s safe to kick this off and maybe update this storyline once a week, see how people feel! It’s five parts - six if you include an auxiliary chapter that I’ve already included a little while back, but at any rate, I hope you folks enjoy this! I’ll be tagging my stories with “#Chaz is a Scribe” for ease of navigation, too!)
NAVIGATION: <- This is the first chapter! | Next Chapter ->
Targrin, Act 1: Ambush
1328 AE, Fields of Ruin, Ascalon
The sun shone through the amber leaves of Sniper’s Woods, just north of Ebonhawke. A small group of Iron Legion charr were marching through the area, keeping eyes out for any signs of danger, though they weren’t heavily armed - They were toting tools and timber rather than swords and shields - though a few had carried sidearms, just in case. The warband’s legionnaire was Arjuna Tarpelt, a large, imposing charr guardian with smooth, shiny black fur. Tarpelt stopped for a moment, turned to face the group, and spoke up, her voice booming with authority.
“Alright, Tar Warband, listen up! Bento Canyon isn’t far from here, we should be able to rendezvous with Lieutenant Tyler at his settlement, and lend a hand with construction efforts there, to reinforce their position. Remember, this isn’t just a construction job, this is an important diplomatic maneuver - we do this right and we’ll be one step closer to a full peace treaty with the humans. Sound good?”
The rest of Tar Warband cheered. For all of their differences of opinion on various subjects, Tar could all agree that peace with the humans was in everyone’s favour, especially after seeing how the Pact took down Zhaitan - Tar themselves had been on the rear lines, building the war machines that took down the Elder Dragon, and while the Pact were busy dealing with a new Elder Dragon threat off in the Maguuma Jungle, Tar stayed behind to keep things running smoothly on the home front.
The band’s newest recruit, Chaz Tarbound, a slightly jumpy, clawless runt of a charr, was perhaps most enthusiastic about this. “Let’s help Lieutenant Tyler as best as we can! Tar sticks together!” they cheered. Tarpelt chuckled, charmed but mildly embarrassed by her new recruit’s vigor. “I don’t know if that’s going to be our official motto, cub, but I appreciate the enthusiasm.” The band shared a lighthearted chuckle, with some murmurs of agreement that the motto was pretty funny, and some jokes that it might just stick after all. Chaz seemed a bit embarrassed as well, but was glad the joke was well-received.
“You seem pretty peppy today, Tarbound,” the legionnaire noted, “Let’s see you make use of that excess energy. Go on ahead and scout the path for us, make sure the way to Tyler’s camp is clear.” Chaz saluted the larger charr. “Can do, Legionnaire!” And with that, the smaller Charr was off, at a marching pace.
The legionnaire nodded, and looked back to the rest of the band. “Right, the rest of you, make sure your supplies are in order, tools, materials, schematics… Make sure you’re reading them the right way, too, let’s not go building upside-down shelters like we did last time, Tarpatch.”
Another chuckle was shared amongst the band, but was quickly interrupted as a short, sharp CRACK echoed through the trees, accompanied by a loud cry of pain.
The Legionnaire’s head shot up, ears pricked as she heard the sound - the voice was familiar, the crack was almost definitely a gunshot, and it had come from the direction that she’d just sent… “TARBOUND!” she called out.
The reply was distant but still there. “Someone help! I’ve been shot, I can’t… help!” Definitely Tarbound’s voice. The band hurried, they crested the hill and looked down to see the runt, bleeding from the leg and looking panicked.
Tarpelt looked to her bandmates, and barked, “Tarpatch, Tarbrush, get Tarbound to safety!” The two charr nodded, and rushed down to the wounded Chaz.
CRACK-CRACK echoed through the trees again, and Tarpatch and Tarbrush slumped to the ground, blood pooling from their heads. “Burn me!” Tarpelt swore through her teeth, as she saw a group of red-masked humans grab Chaz and drag them off into the bushes.
“Argh… no, what are you- someone help! Help me!” the runt cried out as they tried and failed to fight off the Separatists.
The remaining members of Tar warband looked to each other, and to their legionnaire. “What do we do, Legionnaire?” The legionnaire sighed heavily.
“It’s my fault. If I hadn’t told him to go scouting ahead for us… No, I can’t think like that. We charge in, we take out as many Separatists as we can, and we get Tarbound back. You heard him. Tar sticks together.” The charr nodded, and as a group they made their move, hurrying but keeping a low profile in case more gunmen were present.
Chaz’s cries for help were reduced to whimpers of fear as soon as the Separatists brought them face-to-face with an imposing figure; tall but lithe, wearing sturdy, battered armour and a fierce looking helmet that obscured all of their face, save for their eyes - gleaming yellow in the late afternoon sun. The man chuckled, throwing Chaz to the ground before speaking up in a deep, refined accent, muffled partly by his helmet.
“Well, what have we here?” he pondered aloud. “A little lost cub trying to do busywork to get in the good graces of Queen Jennah, after everything you put the Ascalonians through.” He lifted Chaz’s wounded leg roughly, causing them to yelp in pain some more. “What’s this,” he tutted, “No claws? What a shame, I always look forward to pulling out the claws of those vile beasts myself.” He twisted Chaz’s wounded leg slowly, watching them try to bear the pain through gritted teeth, before slamming it back onto the ground, eliciting a yelp.
Chaz was shivering, though they couldn’t process whether it was from fury or from terror. “What… what the hell do you want from me!?” they stammered. The Separatist flicked out a wicked, curved dagger that gleamed in the golden sun, just like his eyes. Before the charr could register what was happening, the blade was already at their throat, close enough to send a cold jolt of fear down their spine as the captor licked it across their neck, drawing a small trickle of blood. The answer came eagerly, through gritted teeth:
“Pure, unending agony.”

The majestic lakes of Kashmir
Visit the water bodies in the lower Shiwalik Himalayas, Kashmir valley and the high mountains of the Kashmir Himalayas for a complex and vibrant ecosystem. The center of life for the inhabitants of the state, these lakes are credited for the emergence of a unique culture of the state of J&K. One can almost see the whole city travelling through these lakes. These tranquil and snowy lakes have been a major attraction of this paradise on earth. Surrounded and protected by the Himalayan Mountains on all sides, these natural treasures offer a unique experience of living on water in the specially designed houseboats. Several scenic lakes with multi-faceted eco-system and grandeur, which epitomize the state of Jammu and Kashmir are-
Dal Lake
Popular as the jewel in the crown of Kashmir, the Dal Lake is the most famous and most visited lake in the state. Lined with Mughal-era gardens, the lake is rich in lotus, water lillies and water chestnuts. It is among those major destinations that let you free to enjoy life on water in the houseboats. One can have the pleasure of Shikara rides, kayaking, canoeing and other water activities in the Dal. Surrounded by mountains on three sides, the lake gives a paradisiacal view when frozen in winter.
Nagin Lake
Located east of Kashmir, the lake lies on the foothills of the mountain Zabarwan. A number of willow and poplar trees lining the lake, Shankaracharya hill on the south and Hari Parbat on the west provide a charming view to the surroundings. Along with several water activities and Shikara rides, one can also hire boats, a romantic experience. Several salesmen can also be seen selling fruit, nuts, fresh flowers, baked goods, woolen shawls, silk carpets, leather goods and other materials on their boats.
Wullar Lake
With a width and length of approximately 10 and 24 km respectively, Wullar Lake is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia. The lake gives about 60 percent of the fish yield of the region. Its perfect location between the cities of Sopore and Bandipore provides a marvellous view of the majestic hills on one side and steep valleys on the other. Wullar Lake, which draws water from the northern river Jhelum, lies at a distance of 60 km from Srinagar. Moreover, a renowned bird watcher's paradise, Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary is also situated near the Lake.
With wooded hills all around, thick forests in the backdrop and countless lotus flowers on the surface, the beautiful Surinsar lake is a great picturesque tourist spot situated about 42 km from Jammu. The lake appears like a lotus garden in summers. The lake is a much sought after by nature lovers. According to Hindu mythology, the lake originated when Arjuna, the hero of the epic Mahabharata, shot an arrow to the land.
Surinsar Lake
Mansar Lake
Popular for the food and crafts festival, the Mansar lake draws thousands of tourists every year around Baisakhi. Apart from the scenic beauty and landscapes, the lake has several religious values too. Situated about 40 km south of Udhampur, the Mansar lake is surrounded by dense forests and hills. The lake is counted among major tourists destinations because of boating facilities and its religious values owing to Sheeshnag shrine. Newly wed couples perform three 'Parikramas' (circumambulations) around the lake to seek the blessings of the lord of serpents. Flickering of seasonal birds, tortoise and fish of different species can be observed while boating in the calm Mansar lake.
Pangong Lake
Located in an isolated area at a 5 hr drive (160 km) from Leh, this 134 km long lake extends from India to China. Tourists mostly visit this lake during May to September with a special permit. The Pangong lake boasts of being the world's highest brackish lake at a height of about 4,250 m (13,900 ft) from sea level. Villagers can be seen with their large herds of Pashmina sheep and long-tailed yaks. Despite being a salt water lake, it surprisingly gets frozen in winter. With such a wonderful location and a scarcity of oxygen, the Pangong Lake is a geologist's domain too.
Tso Moriri Lake
Providing a majestic natural view of Ladakh in the north, Tibet in the east and Zanskar in the west, Tso Moriri lake is mostly visited in summer. Changthang plateau, with snow peaks, provides the source of water for the Lake. The lake is popular for being the largest of the High Altitude Lakes in the Trans-himalayan region, entirely within India. It was earlier a salty lake whose salt was extracted by the end of 1959 for the consumption by the local people. Tourists flock to the lake to visit the Korzok Monastery, situated on the western bank of the lake, believed to be about 400 years old.
While on a tour to the lakes of Jammu and Kashmir, you may also visit the Tsokar Lake and the Gangasagar Lake. Tsokar Lake is popularly called the “White lake” because of the salt content in it. Situated approximately 45 km northwest of the Tsomoriri Lake at a height of 4,485 m, the Tsokar lake covers an area of about 10 sq km. The whitish surface of this lake is the main element that makes it so charming and attractive. The local people extract salt content from the lake .The Gangasagar lake is an artificial lake, which is believed to have been constructed during the time of Sivaji’s coronation with the holy water of river Ganges. The lake provides an enchanting view of the Raigad Fort and the snow clad peaks forming the backdrop.
These waterways, surrounded by majestic mountainous ranges, form the uniqueness of the state of Jammu and Kashmir with their charming houseboats, blossoming gardens, and water sports activities. All these specialties are ideal to make your holiday memorable for a lifetime.

The Process of Surrender By Narasimha Swami Dasa ISKCON desire tree network's Posts - ISKCON Desire Tree From Back to Godhead Lord Krishna’s main message in the Bhagavad-gita is clear: He wants us to fully surrender to Him. The most vital part of the Bhagavad-gita deals with the advice Lord Sri Krishna gives to Arjuna on the surrendering process. One of the dictionary meanings of surrender is “to give (something) up voluntarily to another.” Lord Krishna’s simple words of advice on surrendering are easy to understand. So why do most people, including those of us practicing Krishna consciousness, not fully surrender to the Lord? We are practicing spiritual life in the material world, a prison created by the Lord to reform us and to help us surrender to Him. Krishna is very keen to get us back home, back to Godhead. But are we so keen? In Chapter 7, Text 14, Krishna says, daivi hy esa guna-mayi mama maya duratyaya mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etam taranti te “This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who surrender unto Me can easily cross beyond it.” Krishna has elaborated on the three modes of material nature goodness, passion, and ignorance in Chapter 14. When we are in contact with the material energy and become victims of these three modes, we are called “conditioned.” These modes bind us. Most people do not even know this. Hence they cannot understand what surrender really means. Krishna calls such persons grossly foolish. Why do even the most educated scholars and leaders not surrender to Krishna? Because they are bewildered by atheism in many forms. They are not sukrtina˙, the pious souls Krishna refers to in Chapter 7, Text 16: catur-vidha bhajante mam janah sukrtino ’rjuna arto jijnasur artharthi jnani ca bharatarsabha “O best among the Bharatas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Methe distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.” Atheists do not seek refuge in God. But Krishna classifies four types of persons who take refuge for some benefits in return for their devotion to Him. He recognizes all these people as pious and deserving candidates for surrendering to Him. They are God conscious but are more interested in meeting their personal material goals than in readily surrendering to Krishna. In Bhakti-rasamrta-sindhu (1.1.11) Srila Rupa Gosvami distinguishes devotees who seek Krishna without expecting any benefits in return, terming them pure devotees: anyabhilasita-sunyam jnana-karmady-anavrtam anukulyena Krishnanu- silanam bhaktir uttama “One should render transcendental loving service to the Supreme Lord Krishna favorably and without desire for material profit or gain through fruitive activities or philosophical speculation. That is called pure devotional service.” Srila Prabhupada compares mixed and pure devotees: “When these four kinds of persons [mentioned above] come to the Supreme Lord for devotional service and are completely purified by the association of pure devotees, they also become pure devotees.” Even when people come to Krishna with ulterior motives, they can become pure devotees if they continue to pursue Krishna consciousness and cultivate the association of devotees. When I visited the Srinivasa Temple in Malibu, near Los Angeles, an Indian businessman had come to the temple with plenty of fruits and flowers. Handing these to the priest before the arati, he told him, “Please pray that my new business venture becomes successful.” The priest, a pious Sri Vaishnava devotee, replied, “How can we ask for that? What to give or not to give is dependent entirely on Krishna. So we must leave it to Him instead of asking.” Pure devotional service means to understand the Absolute Truth and become free from all material desires. Krishna says in Chapter 7, Text 19, bahunam janmanam ante jnanavan mam prapadyate vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma su-durlabhah “After many births and deaths, he who is in actual knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.” A Message for Everyone Though seemingly addressed to Arjuna, Bhagavad-gita is a message to all to surrender to Krishna. Krishna gives full importance to the minute independence we have inherited from Him as His parts. He opens up all possible paths one can take to come to Him directly or indirectly. At the same time, He ultimately gives His opinion on the best method to reach Him: the surrendering process. Krishna explains the surrendering process in Chapter 15, Text 5: nirmana-moha jita-sanga-dosa adhyatma-nitya vinivrtta-kamah dvandvair vimuktah sukha-duhkha samjnair gacchanty amudhah padam avyayam tat “Those who are free from false prestige, illusion, and false association, who understand the eternal, who are done with material lust, who are freed from the dualities of happiness and distress, and who, unbewildered, know how to surrender unto the Supreme Person attain to that eternal kingdom.” Krishna lays down the conditions under which one can surrender to Him and go back home, back to Godhead. Pride, lust, unfavorable association, material conditioning, and the dualities of happiness and suffering are all impediments to the surrendering process. The practitioner of devotional service must practice with care in order to gradually abandon the unfavorable characteristics listed by Krishna. The surrendering process starts with self-appraisal. That is the beginning of renunciation both internally and externally. Preparing the devotee Arjuna for total surrender, Krishna elaborates on the surrendering process in Chapter 18, Text 65: man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru mam evaisyasi satyam te pratijane priyo ’si me “Always think of Me, become My devotee, worship Me, and offer your homage unto Me. Thus you will come to Me without fail. I promise you this because you are My dear friend.” Here Krishna summarizes the process of surrender required of us to become His pure devotee. He gives the method to make Him the center of one’s life. In Chapter 18, Text 66, Lord Krishna asks Arjuna to completely surrender to Him: sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah “Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.” This advice is Krishna’s summary conclusion on Bhagavad-gita after He has explained karmayoga, jnana-yoga, dhyana-yoga, and various processes of meditation, sense and mind control, and so on. This is the key text to show the Lord’s protection of devotees and the process of surrender. Mam ekam: the emphasis is surrender only to Him. Examples from Scripture From the scriptures, especially Srimad-Bhagavatam and Mahabharata, we are aware of the histories of pure devotees who have shown us the way of total surrender to Lord Krishna. When Duhsasana tried to disrobe Draupadi, she held on to her sari with her own strength. She wanted to save herself from disgrace in the assembly. Only when her full endeavor could not help her anymore did she lift both hands and surrender to Krishna, begging Him to save her. That was her expression of total surrender. The scriptures also give the surrendering histories of devotees such as Bali Maharaja, Ambarisa Maharaja, and Gajendra. They are all our role models for the surrendering process. Surrender Made Easier The renunciation expected for full surrender appears difficult, especially in this age. Foreseeing this situation, Krishna appeared in the fifteenth century in devotee form as Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu to simplify the process of surrender. He focused on chanting Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare. Caitanya Mahaprabhu taught His associates and devotees the process of surrender to Krishna through deity worship, congregational chanting, honoring Krishnaprasadam, associating with likeminded devotees, hearing and reciting scriptures like Srimad- Bhagavatam and Bhagavad-gita, and searching for Krishna like a child crying for its mother. Srila Prabhupada publicized this process and made it accessible through his books. Drawing from Srila Prabhupada’s books, we can understand that for devotees on the path of sadhana-bhakti (devotional service in practice) who want quick advancement in spiritual life, surrender means: 1. To give ourselves completely to Lord Krishna and depend entirely on Him for protection. 2. To have full confidence that under any circumstances Krishna will protect us. 3. To be ready to accept all that is ordained for us and all karmic reactions, whether desirable or undesirable. 4. To realize that the real doer is Krishna and that we depend on Him for any results. 5. To understand fully that Krishna is the infinite controller and that we are His infinitesimal controlled parts. 6. To realize that we are not the body but the spirit soul. 7. To accept that Krishna is the master and we the servitors. 8. To follow the instruction of Krishna that we should accept a bona fide spiritual master in the succession as Krishna’s representative and surrender to him and serve him with utmost humility. Quarter 1 I do not know much about gods; but I think that the river Is a strong brown god - sullen, untamed and intractable, Patient to some degree, at first recognised as a frontier; Useful, untrustworthy, as a conveyor of commerce; The only a problem confronting the builder of bridges. The problem once solved, the brown god is almost forgotten By the dwellers in cities - ever, however, implacable. Keeping his seasons, and rages, destroyer, reminder Of what men choose to forget. Unhonoured, unpropitiated By worshippers of the machine, but waiting, watching and waiting. His rhythm was present in the nursery bedroom, In the rank ailanthus of the April dooryard, In the smell of grapes on the autumn table, And the evening circle in the winter gaslight. The river is within us, the sea is all about us; The sea is the land's edge also, the granite, Into which it reaches, the beaches where it tosses Its hints of earlier and other creation: The starfish, the horseshoe crab, the whale's backbone; The pools where it offers to our curiosity The more delicate algae and the sea anemone. It tosses up our losses, the torn seine, The shattered lobsterpot, the broken oar And the gear of foreign dead men. The sea has many voices, Many gods and many voices. The salt is on the briar rose, The fog is in the fir trees. The sea howl And the sea yelp, are different voices Often together heard: the whine in the rigging, The menace and caress of wave that breaks on water, The distant rote in the granite teeth, And the wailing warning form the approaching headland Are all sea voices, and the heaving groaner Rounded homewards, and the seagull: And under the oppression of the silent fog The tolling bell Measures time not our time, rung by the unhurried Ground swell, a time Older than the time of chronometers, older Than time counted by anxious worried women Lying awake, calculating the future, Trying to unweave, unwind, unravel And piece together the past and the future, Between midnight and dawn, when the past is all deception, The future futureless, before the morning watch Whem time stops and time is never ending; And the ground swell, that is and was from the beginning, Clangs The bell. Quarter 2 Where is there an end of it, the soundless wailing, The silent withering of autumn flowers Dropping their petals and remaining motionless; Where is there and end to the drifting wreckage, The prayer of the bone on the beach, the unprayable Prayer at the calamitous annunciation? There is no end, but addition: the trailing Consequence of further days and hours, While emotion takes to itself the emotionless Years of living among the breakage Of what was believed in as the most reliable- And therefore the fittest for renunciation. There is the final addition, the failing Pride or resentment at failing powers, The unattached devotion which might pass for devotionless, In a drifting boat with a slow leakage, The silent listening to the undeniable Clamour of the bell of the last annunciation. Where is the end of them, the fishermen sailing Into the wind's tail, where the fog cowers? We cannot think of a time that is oceanless Or of an ocean not littered with wastage Or of a future that is not liable Like the past, to have no destination. We have to think of them as forever bailing, Setting and hauling, while the North East lowers Over shallow banks unchanging and erosionless Or drawing their money, drying sails at dockage; Not as making a trip that will be unpayable For a haul that will not bear examination. There is no end of it, the voiceless wailing, No end to the withering of withered flowers, To the movement of pain that is painless and motionless, To the drift of the sea and the drifting wreckage, The bone's prayer to Death its God. Only the hardly, barely prayable Prayer of the one Annunciation. It seems, as one becomes older, That the past has another pattern, and ceases to be a mere sequence- Or even development: the latter a partial fallacy Encouraged by superficial notions of evolution, Which becomes, in the popular mind, a means of disowning the past. The moments of happiness - not the sense of well-being, Fruition, fulfilment, security or affecton, Or even a very good dinner, but the sudden illumination-- We had the experience but missed the meaning, And approach to the meaning restores the experience In a different form, beyond any meaning We can assign to happiness. I have said before That the past experience revived in the meaning Is not the experience of one life only But of many generations - not forgetting Something that is probably quite ineffable: The backward look behind the assurance Of recorded history, the backward half-look Over the shoulder, towards the primitive terror. Now, we come to discover that the moments of agony (Whether, or not, due to misunderstanding, Having hoped for the wrong things or dreaded the wrong things, Is not in question) are likewise permanent With such permanence as time has. We appreciate this better In the agony of others, nearly experienced, Involving ourselves, than in our own. For our own past is covered by the currents of action, But the torment of others remains an experience Unqualified, unworn by subsequent attrition. People change, and smile: but the agony abides. Time the destroyer is time the preserver, Like the river with its cargo of dead negroes, cows and chicken coops, The bitter apple, and the bite in the apple. And the ragged rock in the restless waters, Waves wash over it, fogs conceal it; On a halcyon day it is merely a monument, In navigable weather it is always a seamark To lay a course by, but in the sombre season Or the sudden fury, is what it always was. Quarter 3 I sometimes wonder if that is what Krishna meant- Among other things - or one way of putting the same thing: That the future is a faded song, a Royal Rose or a lavender spray Of wistful regret for those who are not yet here to regret, Pressed between yellow leaves of a book that has never been opened. And the way up is the way down, the way forward is the way back. You cannot face it steadily, but this thing is sure, That time is no healer: the patient is no longer here. When the train starts, and the passengers are settled To fruit, periodicals and business letters (And those who saw them off have left the platform) Their faces relax from grief into relief, To the sleepy rhythm of a hundred hours. Fare forward, travellers! not escaping from the past Into different lives, or into any future; You are not the same people who left that station Or who will arrive at any terminus, While the narrowing rails slide together behind you; Watching the furrow that widens behind you, You shall not think "the past is finished" Or "the future is before us". At nightfall, in the rigging and the aerial, Is a voice descanting (though not to the ear, The murmuring shell of time, and not in any language) "Fare forward, you who think that you are voyaging; You are not those who saw the harbour Receding, or those who will disembark. Here between the hither and the farther shore While time is withdrawn, consider the future And the past with an equal mind. At the moment which is not of action or inaction You can receive this: 'on whatever sphere of being The mind of a man may be intent At the time of death' - that is the one action (And the time of death is every moment) Which shall fructify in the lives of others: And do not think of the fruit of action. Fare forward. O voyagers, O seamen, You who came to port, and you whose bodies Will suffer the trial and judgement of the sea, Or whatever event, this is your real destination." So Krishna, as when he admonished Arjuna On the field of battle. Not fare well, But fare forward, voyagers. Quarter 4 Lady, whose shrine stands on the promontory, Pray for all those who are in ships, those Whose business has to do with fish, and Those concerned with every lawful traffic And those who conduct them. Repeat a prayer also on behalf of Women who have seen their sons or husbands Setting forth, and not returning: Figlia del tuo figlio, Queen of Heaven. Also pray for those who were in ships, and Ended their voyage on the sand, in the sea's lips Or in the dark throat which will not reject them Or wherever cannot reach them the sound of the sea bell's Perpetual angelus. Quarter 5 To communicate with Mars, converse with spirits, To report the behaviour of the sea monster, Describe the horoscope, haruspicate or scry, Observe disease in signatures, evoke Biography from the wrinkles of the palm And tragedy from fingers; release omens By sortilege, or tea leaves, riddle the inevitable With playing cards, fiddle with pentagrams Or barbituric acids, or dissect The recurrent image into pre-conscious terrors- To explore the womb, or tomb, or dreams; all these are usual Pastimes and drugs, and features of the press: And always will be, some of them especially Whether on the shores of Asia, or in the Edgware Road, Men's curiosity searches past and future And clings to that dimension. But to apprehend The point of intersection of the timeless With time, is an occupation for the saint-- No occupation either, but something given And taken, in a lifetime's death in love, Ardour and selflessness and self-surrender. For most of us, there is only the unattended Moment, the moment in and out of time, The distraction fit, lost in a shaft of sunlight, The wild thyme unseen, or the winter lightning Or the waterfall, or music heard so deeply That it is not heard at all, but you are the music While the music lasts. These are only hints and guesses, Hints followed by guesses; and the rest Is prayer, observance, discipline, thought and action. The hint half guessed, the gift half understood, is Incarnation. Here the impossible union Of spheres of evidence is actual, Here the past and future Are conquered, and reconciled, Where action were otherwise movement Of that which is only moved And has in it no source of movement-- Driven by daemonic, chthonic Powers. And right action is freedom From past and future also. For most of us, this is the aim Never here to be realised; Who are only undefeated Because we have gone on trying; We, content at the last If our temporal reversion nourish (Not too far from the yew-tree) The life of significant soil.
T.S. Eliot, The Dry Salvages
