You want a part 2. You want a part 2. You want a part 2…
(Or like, I can just write an essay in a reblog and show you the wonderful art piece my friend painted for me because I’m obsessed with Ariel and dream of playing him)

like man im just a guy cmon man like
[ ID: Three different drawings, all on white backgrounds.
The first is of Fyodo Dolokhov, who is fashioned in clothes associated with cowboys, and coloured in a pallet of red, three greens, and yellow. He holds a gun to the sky with his left hand, looking at the camera tiredly and chewing on a stalk of hay.
The second is two fully coloured full body sketches of Ariel and Caliban. Caliban is slightly blurred, clapping his hands and shuffling. Arrows point to him reading, "cannot stop trying to default dance," and, "will trip in 0.05 seconds." Ariel stands still with their left hand behind their back, extending their right. There are arrows that point at them reading, "about to invent the waltz," and one between them and Caliban that says, "desires him carnally."
The third is a fully coloured fullbody sketch of Andrei Bolkonsky sitting down in Lise Bolkonskaya's dress. He wears a forlorn expression, holding his weight with his right hand while his left swings cross his chest. The arrow that points to him is obscured greatly, in white it reads, "NOOoo." END ID ]

Tumblr media
This was part of my undergrad illustration thesis, which was illustrations to accompany the text of Shakespeare's The Tempest, repurposing aesthetics and imagery from the rural New Hampshire village where I grew up.
Reposting this piece from May 2020, because it is now available as a print, and Tumblr is being weird about letting me edit the original post to add alt text and a link.

Charles Ricketts (1866-1931), 'Ariel's Song to Ferdinand', ''The Magazine of Art'', 1895 "Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes; Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea change Into something rich and strange. Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell: Hark! now I hear them — Ding-dong, bell" Source

another one of those. absolutely black out and suddenly theres a doodle page yknow
[long id! readmore time!]
[ ID: Various doodles in different colours from The Tempest on a white background. In the top left, Ferdinand in green rests on his hands and is smiling with his eyes closed. There is text next to him that says, "loved by a very special butch" with an arrow pointing at him. In the top right, Ariel in blue is seen smiling with the text, "AW little guy !!" Under them, while an arrow points to a different, scarier Ariel with text under them that reads, "OH hes a little fucked up actually .." In the middle, there is an image of a whiteboard with two drawings on it. On the left, a half body of Sebastian has a quote next to him saying, "I will show him what a shower scene is... /r" On the right, a bust of Antonio looks with annoyance at Sebastian while text pointing at him reads, "this man does not know what a shower scene is. he is from 1145 (god help him)". To the right of the image, a drawing of Antonio in red barks at the image with the quote, "of COURSE i know what a shower scene is." Sebastian in dark green, below the image, nods his head at Antonio and says, "yes antonio you're very wise like that" and strike through text after, "when is it our turn..." In the bottom left, a bust of Caliban in brown holds up three fingers on his left hand, while he glances apathetic to his right. Above him, text reads, "caliban would celebrate out of touch thursday" END ID. ]

Reblog with art!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ID: First image is a pencil sketch of Ariel from The Tempest. Ariel is depicted as a slim humanoid wearing loose, airy clothing. They have straightish shoulder-length hair, pointed ears, and horns. Their eyes are wide open and their mouth is open in a scream, tears rolling down their cheek. They're hunched over, right hand outstretched, left hand pressed over their stomach. Their left knee is up by their chest, their right leg extended. They have long, claw-like nails on their right hand. Second image is a close-up of Ariel's face. /end ID
Once upon a time, Ariel loved Caliban.
They cared little for him at the first. The foul whelp of Sycorax their captor? Sycorax who came unto their isle and bound them to her will? Nay. Had they been able, they'd as soon have dashed his brains out on the rocks as rocked the babe and fed him.
And then Sycorax grew ill.
And Caliban was so small, so helpless.
Ariel, leader of the isle's spirits, swooped upon him, intending to snatch him up, fly high, and release him. His death would enrage Sycorax, show her that spirits were not to be trifled with.
They lifted the boy high into the air. They flew up til the island grew small beneath them.
A small arm wrapped around them.
"Ariel?" a tiny voice said, in their own tongue, the tongue of the spirits. "I'm scared."
Ariel could no more drop Caliban than let themself fall.
They floated back to the ground and set the child down. "Do you love to see your kingdom so, my king?"
Caliban's little face split with a grin. "I do! Thank you, Ariel!"
Ariel could not help but smile fondly upon the boy. "King upon this isle someday thou wilt be. What would my future master have of me?"
"Stay with me?" Caliban requested. His hand crept into Ariel's, and they firmed beneath his touch, insubstantial air becoming flesh. "I don't want to be alone."
"My lord." Ariel caressed his hair.
-
The best day of Ariel's life was the worst day of Ariel's life.
Caliban called to them, a dance in his voice, and as always they flew to him. They solidified at his summons, a body forming from mist. "My master!"
"My delicate Ariel." Caliban smiled and held out a hand.
Ariel approached, lifting one hand to touch his cheek. Caliban smiled and brought his hand to rest over theirs. His head tilted up, his gaze met theirs.
"What would my beautiful master have of me?" Ariel murmured. Their feet touched the ground, making them the same height as Caliban. They'd done that intentionally, keeping their solid form the size of his as he grew.
Caliban leaned close. His lips touched theirs, and Ariel dissolved in an entirely different way than was their custom, a way in which they remained flesh and blood, feet firmly on the ground, while simultaneously floating and lighter than air.
Caliban's arm wrapped firmly around Ariel's waist. Perhaps it should have felt constricting, but it was quite the opposite: lending support to their form, keeping them grounded in their body. They kissed Caliban back, dizzy with delight.
When they finally parted, Caliban panting, Ariel not even breathing, they touched their lips and said, "Caliban?"
He answered their unspoken question. "I've wanted to do that for months, my Ariel. Months, but... I did not wish to force thee."
"You could never force me," Ariel said. They cupped his face again, their thumb brushing his lip.
Before they had to ask, Caliban kissed them again, and their heart sang with the rhythm of the island.
A screech rang out, and a staff rammed between them. "Beast! Damned creature! Filth!"
Ariel and Caliban both stumbled back, stares fixed on Sycorax as she furiously drove them apart and turned her anger on Ariel. "Thrice-damned spirit! Twas not enough to accept the freedom I granted thee, thou seek'st to corrupt my son! Filthy creature!" She began to chant a spell, scribing runes in the air with her staff.
"My queen, I did not!" Ariel protested. Their feet were fixed to the earth. As they pulled uselessly, roots began to grow over them.
"Mother-!" Caliban began.
"Silence!"
Caliban's mouth snapped shut. Ariel knew the signs of magic.
"Please," they begged as wood crept up their legs. "My queen, please do not do this."
Caliban's dark, teary eyes were the last thing they saw before their vision was swallowed by the tree grown around them.
It wasn't long before the pain began.
