I think the fact that Arthur isn't mentioned in rdr1 by any of the gang members makes his death so much more tragic because it almost feels like nobody wants to talk about it cause it deep down hurts them all so incredibly much. Dutch's biggest mistake was leaving Arthur on that mountain.

bbc merlin 04x10 - A Herald of the New Age

favourite thing about this is that the line "choose your next words carefully" has a double meaning - obviously arthur never takes well to merlin just disappearing for longer stretches of time, but, of course, elyan is also gone and one can only guess that merlin was involved. the scene doesn't really go that way, but, hey, who's to say arthur's unimpressed reactions aren't just him wondering how merlin hasn't become better at lying after all these years.

we see this a lot, merlin (or others, such as gaius) making up excuses for his whereabouts and although it's often a gag, a silly little moment in the episode, i think arhur always knew more than it seemed (even if it wasn't quite magic-level knowledge)
