Chickie’s & Pete’s, Philadelphia

Crab Fries are another Philadelphia staple that I hadn’t discovered until recently, but now, I try to find a Chickie’s & Pete’s whenever I visit. What are crab fries you ask?

Just don’t call it Old Bay. But whatever the magic blend they sprinkle on their spuds, it’s deliciously addictive!

So while we were at Marvel Day with the Philadelphia Flyers last weekend, my buddy Steve and I made a beeline for Chickie’s & Pete’s as soon as we entered their amazing arena...

Shelled out for the portion you see above, but little did we know that they were going to send over a hefty platter to our suite a few hours later...

My favorite trope is cynical, underdog characters learning that the will to power is is actually key to making a better world. Seeing them take the lead because power isn't actually this horrible, corrupting thing, actually, it's just how adults get shit done, and god knows we have a lot of shit that needs doing. I love seeing the whole idea of power as a corruption get exposed as a hyperstition encouraged by assholes because it makes it that much easier for them to gather at the top while also pumping all their competition away. No need to even fake being a good person if there's only 2-3 in the entire room. Right? Like I get it, being the underdog is aesthetic, but being The Motherfucking Man lets you move mountains. I like seeing good people drop the simplicity and ease of being the underdog and actually take it upon themselves to start winning. Veternaricore. Letocore. I'm trying to think of more than just those two but it's hard.

so for a sneakpeak, here’s the premise of the AU:

In a post-apocalyptic world,

Gavus is the head of the Celestial Justice Department in Sanctum, and right hand man of Governor Morgana. Rust is a disease rampant throughout Sanctum, and most concerningly afflicting his son (and the city’s youngest “miracle” doctor), Liberta.

Eugene is an ex-Hypogean Mushroom Keeper, and a wanted criminal in most surviving cities. He defected from Conrad’s beliefs a long time ago with his rust-afflicted daughter, Lucilla. Searching for a cure to rust, he runs through Sanctum City.

In a chance meeting, Eugene and Gavus decide to team-up together to save their children from rust.

Books of 2024: THE HAUNTED BOOKSTORE by Shinobumaru, with art by Medamayaki and character design by Munashichi.

So I don't tend to read much manga, BUT: last year, I was trying to buy a copy of THAT WE MAY LIVE (an anthology from Two Lines Press) for a friend for Christmas, and Bookshop sent me the second volume of this series instead?? Which. Looked SO directly up my alley (hello: birdguy with black wings on the cover?? haunted BOOKstore?? "gateway to a parallel universe"??? yeah okay I'll bite) that instead of donating the book (like customer support said I could do, since they didn't want it back), I tracked down the first volume to give it a go, and then proceeded to mosey through them gently over a couple nights.

These were fun! They turned out to be just as Up My Alley as I hoped, they matched my current writing project vibes REALLY well, AND they were a nice break from heavy prose. Winning all around!
