Absolutely OBSESSED with the progression of cataloguing in Critical Role, like:
Campaign 1: the Slayer's Take, religious institutions containing dangerous threats that must be hidden away. utilitarian, standard fantasy fare.
Campaign 2: the Cobalt Soul, extensive global networks of knowledge collection, collation, and dissemination. commentary on the importance of knowledge keepers and its relationship to corruption.
Campaign 3: the absolute most BUCKWILD personal collections you've ever seen in your life. hoarder territory. if there's a cataloguing system it is HIGHLY specific to its creator. what is real and and what is fake. opens up to metanarrative commentary on organization of knowledge and archival that I WILL be writing a dissertation on in five years, research funding be fucking damned.

Fun fact: In Barbatos's intimacy storyline in Nightbringer he ends up living with Solomon and MC at Cocytus Hall temporarily. Here's a highlight from his 40 intimacy call:
The way he makes Solomon sit in the corner. 😭 You cannot convince me he didn't raise this man.

For those who haven't seen the show or don't remember this part, Odo has been framed for murder and temporarily relieved of duty here. That's why he's making the joke about joining Quark's organization.
And it's funny up until that heartbreaking downcast look as Odo realizes this might be the last time he jokes with Quark. His face becomes tragically blank as he remembers the gravity of the situation he's in.
This is episode THREE, by the way. This isn't some late-season episode that builds on weeks of information the audience already knows. They were Frenemies *long* before we came along, and the "-to-lovers" part of their arc doesn't even have to wait for The Ascent. It could start right here.
The only reason I don't think it could start any earlier than this is because Odo says earlier in the same episode that he's never understood the humanoid need to 'couple', but I like to think that it isn't long before Quark begins to prove him wrong.

The fans: Ugh Sonic was just so preachy. I mean obviously he's supposed to be the good guy, so any uncomfortableness I feel here and any way I feel like Sonic's choices are framed as being why some other people have shitty lives is just bad writing because he is obviously supposed to be right always, but this characterization makes no sense. Isn't he right for the things he did?
Ian Flynn, using Kitsunami to say the (barely even at this point) quiet part even louder: Hey it's almost like ever since the Mr. Tinker event we've been purposely running with the critique of Sonic as being more selfish than he appears. Sonic is upholding a system of Eggman v Sonic that currently benefits him and shuts down talk of how to improve the current system because he likes his own personal enjoyment and he's attached enough to Eggman that he'd rather Eggman pretend to be a good person than be stuck in prison for life. He doesn't even quite practice what he preaches. We are trying to show that the current hero v villain system and Sonic's recklessness currently affects some people poorly and that Sonic isn't a perfect hero.
#fandom wank#sonic the hedgehog#idw sonic comics#idw sonic 2024 annual#2024 sonic annual spoilers#idw somic comic spoilers#idw sonic spoilers#idw 2024 sonic annual spoilers#i just be ramblin#god one of these days I need to commit to the sonic character essay#because you HAVE to be able to see Sonic as a multifaceted character that is surprisingly selfish and a bit self centered despite his image#as a good hero who is always right to understand what the writers for Sonic Prime and Idw Sonic are trying to do#The point is not that Sonic is secretly a bad guy or anything#the point is that we're already primed to assume that anything Sonic does is a good thing because he's a hero and protagonist of what is#considered a 'children's media'#And people who can see those moments in different games or properties times where Sonic isn't being so good as him actually not being so#good of a person are primed to explain it away as flaws of the writing or the genre at that time *because* Sonic's behavior is not said to#be bad or punished in those games#And become we're already primed to assume that Sonic is already the good guy who's making the best choices no matter what‚ it's supposed to#be shocking when the narrative takes a step back and gives a critique of this status quo by showing us the effects of it#But instead of having some sort of eye opening event or being willing to meet the narrative where it's at#99% of the people who post here got uncomfortable and just doubled down‚ saying that because these things are being pointed out and some of#Sonic's actions (that aren't even alien to the games)#are being framed in a not so good light‚ then it must not be purposeful. That it must be bad writing through and through and just bad#Sonic characterization#because for people who claim they want Sonic as a series to be deeper and more thought out they sure start to pearl clutch when they feel#like a property isn't being as shallow as the very same games they think kinda suck#anyways anyways sorry about the rant I'll get back to regularly scheduled posting after this#vent post

looking at timelines and thinking about the CONSTANT near misses where Durge and Karlach almost met while involved with/working for Gortash. the overlap is there!! but Karlach doesn't recognize Durge when they meet in game, so they must not have ever met
Karlach was Gortash's bodyguard, it would have made sense for him to bring her to meetings with a Bhaalspawn--when would he be in more danger than that? That he didn't means that either he trusted Durge not to kill him, or worried instead that Durge would kill Karlach if they met. Which, yeah, if her temperament pre-Avernus is anything like in-game then that meeting would have extraordinarily poorly! Faced with a very real threat she would have stood her ground to protect her boss and friend, still, and there is no way Durge could let that slide--there is no way she could have won that fight. Gortash liked her too much, or did not want to replace her yet, or had already put the wheels in motion on the infernal engines front and knew she would make an excellent candidate for a test, when the time came. Cuz he sold her anyway, didn't he?
so I'm emo about that but ALSO the slapstick hijink potential of Gortash running interference so that neither of them ever encounter one another is UNPARALLELED.

"Rook loves Vil and Neige"
"Rook the biggest NeigeVil shipper"
"Rook wants to be in a thrupple with Vil and Neige"
Y'all seriously need to stay out of relationships if you think what Rook is doing is in any way shape or form love and not blind toxic obsession. His dream Vil has no personality other than blind adoration of Neige. Even his uniform isn't customized at all. He would lay his life down for Neige and that is the only thing that matters about him. Rook's ideal version of Vil is one who isn't a person but just an accessory to another being he doesn't see as a person either. It is incredibly toxic and unhealthy and I wish y'all realized that.
And Vil calling himself ugly and disgusting for having negative feelings and intrusive thoughts – an idea that Rook planted into his head – is just as toxic. Feeling bad about a genuine injustice committed against you isn't ugly and isn't disgusting and it doesn't define you as a person. Vil shouldn't be calling himself that just because Rook refuses to see him as a person instead of a perfect ideal that gets "sullied" by having negative emotions.

Rook, the Lighthouse, the Veilguard (a theory)
Many thoughts about our base being called the Lighthouse, protagonist named Rook, and group named Veilguard...
In chess (assuming that in Thedas it works similarly), the rook pieces is shaped like a turret, or simply a tower. A tower is first and foremost a place to watch over potential threats before they become problematic, and only then it becomes a place to defend and attack from. This imagery fits the guarding aspect implied in the name "Veilguard".
But what is a lighthouse if not a tower that lights up on top? I'm reminded of the Red Rook-Wolf Book revealed so long ago: a turret/rook with a wolf's head surrounded by fire above it.

Now. A lighthouse (metaphorical or otherwise) is in hindsight also quite fitting: just remember all the times that the Fade was referenced in lore to by its water-like qualities?
Here lies the abyss, the well of all souls. From these emerald waters doth life begin anew. (Canticle of Andraste 14:11) - From the waters of the Fade you made the world. As the Fade had been fluid, so was the world fixed. (Threnodies 1:4) - The sun, looking down upon the fruitful land, saw the joy that Elgar'nan took in her [the land's] works and grew jealous. [...] The land cracked and split from bitterness and pain, and cried salt tears for the loss of all she had wrought. The pool of tears cried for the land became the ocean, and the cracks in her body the first rivers and streams. [...] Eventually Elgar'nan threw the sun down from the sky and buried him in a deep abyss created by the land's sorrow. (From The Tale of Elgar'nan and the Sun, as told by Gisharel, Keeper of the Ralaferin clan of the Dalish elves)
Perhaps the Lighthouse is placed at the Crossroads, or somewhere between the Fade and Waking World, to guide and light the way for those who are allowed to pass through.
Perhaps it's Veilguard not only because the Veil need guarding, but we're also the guards that watch over the threshold of the Fade.

Okay can someone who's been following the funny anime superhero show for its entire 10 year run please tell me why everyone is reacting so negatively to the final chapters because while I don't really enjoy them either I don't find them all that bad?? I've only recently gotten back into it since my old phase when I was like, 10. And I've caught up. But I don't really get everyone's reactions and I feel like I would only understand if I had been following the series for a while.

When the Sky Cracks Open
Everyone knows the Change God is a lazy god. Rather letting people make their own choices and figure out their path by themselves than to interfere in any way. It was a choice on the Change God’s part, and their gift to the world, everyone knows that.
(Everyone is wrong.)
