Happy Birthday Arei Naegishi!

I am so bad at remembering birthdays I almost missed this one. But it's still the third in my time zone, so I'm still gonna do it! Arei's our birthday girl, and the best character ever (<- her opinion) gets a birthday post too! Spoilers below the cut as always.

-Arei's backstory was revealed in CH 2 EP 5. She was bullied heavily by her sisters, Fuyuko and Natsuko, and we see an example of them doing so by forcefully cutting part of the right side of her hair. You can even see, to this day, she seems to have more hair on her left than on her right. She also mentions "If [she] had to go to the hospital once or twice, then it was nothing more than a minor inconvenience for [her sisters]." Which, uh, huh. That's... quite awful. The point is that Arei hated her life back then, and rightfully hated her sisters as well.

-Despite that, it seems Arei tried to be kind for the longest time. She's far from an innately cruel person, but eventually, she felt the only way out was turning the table on her sisters and starting to bully them. Her secret is "Blackmailing, rumors, lying, stealing, slander. You did everything you could to ruin your sisters' lives" and she confessed that she framed them for everything she could to get them unlawfully sent to reform school. This included planting things in their bags and lying to authorities, as well as driving her mother's car into a ditch and blaming it on her sister drunk driving. Okay so bullying is maybe an understatement but the idea stands.

-And it worked! She managed to get them sent to reform school, and her life improved drastically. Morally dubious queen shit, etc. However, this made her develop a harmful ideology that being kind is a weakness and will get you treated badly. Which is why she acts unnecesarily mean during the killing game.

-However, deep down, Arei is still nice. She doesn't really like doing the things she does, she just feels they're necessary for her to survive. Even right before her secret reveal, she was trying to justify her actions to herself, saying it's normal for people to be like her:

Arei (laughing nervously): You [David] do want to hear my secret after all. As I guessed, everyone has that burning curiosity inside of them to hear bad things about other people. It's not just me.

-Which is why Eden's existence led her to a breakdown. Because Eden is nice and kind and is exactly the type of person Arei thinks would be destroyed in """the real world.""" And yet, Eden keeps going, she's still nice. Eden is what Arei wishes she could have been, she sees her past Arei in current Eden. Which is why she bullied her originally; to "teach her how the world works." Because Arei doesn't want to do real harm, so it's better if she does it than someone else later down the line.

-That doesn't go well. She breaks down in front of David, who comforts her quite successfully... so much so that she seems to forget she wanted to talk to David about his secret oops.

-This is what leads to her apologizing to Eden and promising to be her friend and a better person... and then she died. Well, under the most common interpretation.

-Her birthday lands on November 3rd, just three days after Ace's. This coincides with:

+Fountain Pen Day (Min reference?)

+National Sandwich Day.

+National Homemaker Day.

+Jellyfish Day. (?)

+Give Someone a Dollar Day (??)

+Love Your Lawyer Day (???????)

Among other things. I still have no idea where these come from.

-The roman numeral assigned to her in the LGI MV is IV (4), a number associated with death because yeeeeaaaah... This is: "right now, why do you cry?"

Ignoring the intentional mistranslation, this is probably just referencing Arei's breakdown in the playground.

-Color Theory (I'm sorry but I'm done linking that post) assigns her... well, I believe dark blue, so I'm going with that. This is cry, big and the Mandarin laugh (哈哈哈) in the rain scene.

(The good thing about having done this fucking video is that I have all the damn screenshots you could ever ask for in relation to it)

"Cry" for the same reasoning as her numeral. "Big" in this context is "proud", which fits. And the laugh is long to explain, but basically it's the "applause crew" (Cheery David, Xander, Hu, Arei) overwhelming David. Watch that part of the video for a better explanation.

-Arei had an FTE with J, which she starts off by tickling her, later claiming she would, uhm.

Arei: I'll tie you down and force you to wear maid dresses and bunny suits until you change your mind! [About acting girly]

Arei what. This screenshot feels like it should be fake what do you mean it's canon. It's great, don't get me wrong, it just feels extremely outta pocket. Listen, I (aro/ace) don't feel qualified to unpack whatever the fuck is going on here, I'm just gonna leave this to the shippers.

-What I will unpack is the other stuff in the FTE related to Arei. Which is-

Arei: C'mere! I'll tickle you until you laugh so hard that your heart stops! Then I'll defibrillate you and tickle you some more! Tickle tickle tickle!

I said the OTHER stuff

-Mainly, that she feels like being the favorite child would be great (you can figure out why yourself I imagine), and she likes acting girly.

-We also learn she categorizes people based on how she likes to bully them. "Cool and suave wannabe boys" like J (as in, she acts like a boy who tries and fails to be cool and suave), "spineless pushovers" like Levi (she "uses as maids"), "adorably sweet people" like Eden (she """likes""" to make them cry), and the people who don't like her, which would presumably include her sisters, as she says she likes to destroy these people's lives. Foreshadowing!

Fun facts!

-She likes gossip and dislikes being ignored.

-Her subtitle quote in the cast page is "If I tell you a secret, will you promise to keep it?" Which is insane foreshadowing given the chapter she (allegedly) died in.

-Her secret quote is "Because that’s what friends do", which she said to Eden in the trial flashback. The quote associated to her in Mai's page is "She doesn’t like it when her friends fight." Friendship is evidently something of a running theme.

-She likes "cute" food (?), her favorite color is azure (because she's blue), her favorite ice cream flavor is birthday cake flavor (oh, fitting!). Her least favorite color is green because it "looks like puke", which... I wonder if it has something to do with being bullied by her sisters given the apparent hospital visits.

-Her name in Kanji is written 投石【なげ・いし】亜鈴【あ・れい】. Cool! Don't know what any of that means.

-Like most of the cast, her hair color is natural and she's American.

-She's ambidextrous! The only ambidextrous person in the cast, in fact, and the only one apart from Teruko to not be a righty.

i know you didn’t plan it, but thanks for being here.

Teruko Tawaki was going to die soon because of Xander Matthews. Because of that, Xander’s death would follow soon after hers. That was how it worked in a killing game, going based off of what MonoTV said. Xander didn’t have much time left before he killed Teruko, which meant he didn’t have much time left before he died.

They were such pessimistic thoughts. There was always the chance that he would be spared death because he managed to get away with the crime. He wasn’t sure if he could, though. He prepared for it by having all the necessary components to frame Charles Cuevas for Teruko’s murder, but he didn’t know if everyone would fall for it.

Although, he wasn’t sure if he wanted them to fall for it. Doing so would mean everyone else would be executed as he stood and watched. The heroic thing would be to say he would be willing to be executed on behalf of everyone excluding Teruko, but death was such a scary factor of life.

Xander stood in the infirmary, standing next to the cabinets as he stared at them. How unusual he must look to anyone who happened to come inside the infirmary. He was only there to think. That was not how he wanted to spend his final moments, but he wasn’t sure if he could spend it the way he wanted.

Fortunately, because no one had any medical emergencies for the last bit, the infirmary was pleasantly empty. Xander hoped it would stay that way until he had to leave, but he was interrupted by someone opening the door and asking, “What are you doing here?”

He turned around to see Arei Nageishi at the entrance. Her usually-gloved hand was bare, the glove being held by her other hand, with her index finger held out. He noticed why she came here.

“Did you cut yourself? I’ll help you!” he decided for her, already rummaging through the infirmary for bandages. Despite doom looming over him, he felt happy someone needed help, even if it was a bit small. Xander always knew that in his final moments of life, he would like to do something nice. It didn’t have to be anything big. As long as it was nice, he was fine with anything. Plus, it could also distract her from him being here for, to her, no reason. He didn’t want to have to explain to her what he was going to do.

Arei sat on the nearest hospital bed right as he found the bandages. Xander approached her and helped wrap them around her finger. He was a little fascinated by how soft and slender her fingers were—was that something all bowlers had?—but he decided not to comment on it. He didn’t want to start anything he couldn’t finish now.

Once her finger was wrapped up, he put the bandages back. While doing so, Arei pointed out, “You didn’t say why you were here, you know.”

He could now see she couldn’t be easily distracted. There was no reason to remember that now, though.

Xander didn’t look up as he lied. “I was changing my eye patch.”

“Why do you wear that anyway? It looks stupid.” She put her glove back on her usual hand.

“I have to. I don’t have an eye.”

“Really? I thought it was just something you wore because you thought it makes you look cool.”

“I think it does.” He smiled slightly at the face she made. “Do you want to see it?”

Her face twisted, and he was going to take it as a no. She surprised him by relaxing her face, shrugging her shoulders, and saying, “Why not?”

Xander smiled as he lifted his white eye patch. With his only eye, he watched her for any signs of discomfort. He showed it to Teruko and Eden Tobisa the other day, and Charles accidentally saw it just before them. They were all disgusted or uncomfortable. Arei narrowed her two eyes at his missing one as if she was studying it. She then scoffed and said, “I thought it was going to be worse.”

He readjusted his eye patch as he asked, “What do you mean?”

“It’s not that bad,” she explained. “Ugh, you made it a bigger deal than it was, and now I’m disappointed!”

“But I barely said anything?”

“You said enough.”

Xander knew they hadn’t been stuck together for long, but he still didn’t understand Arei Nageishi’s thought process. He never would.

He still had time before he had to kill Teruko, so he decided to continue this conversation. “You’re not phased by it. The other three people who saw were disgusted.”

She scowled. “Those three had soft lives then. Sheltered as they grew up. Wait until they find out how the real world works.”

He felt annoyance rise as she insulted people when she didn’t know whom he was talking about. Something like this happened when he and Teruko were introducing themselves to everyone, and he would’ve gotten himself into a fight with Arei, if Teruko hadn’t pulled him away. He had to remind himself that he or Arei were going to die soon, so he couldn’t afford any fights. “I’m guessing you didn’t grow up like that.”

“Obviously not. I was surrounded by people who showed me exactly how the real world works. So, I’m a strong, independent woman who knows all about how to make it by in this world!” She posed and winked.

It wasn’t that funny, but Xander still laughed. Did the possibility of dying do that to people, make them wish their final moments were happy memories? Or did they wish the other person or people they were with had happy memories of them before death? After all, it seemed that the last moments one had with a deceased were the memories they could vividly remember the most.

“Never laugh again,” Arei ordered, a frown on her face. “You sound weird.”

Xander stopped laughing. The moment was officially ruined.

He didn’t want his final conversation with someone other than Teruko to end in awkward silence, though. He had to continue as if nothing was wrong. “How did you hurt yourself?”

Arei’s glove had several of her fingers bare, her index finger one of them. She held it up to her face. “I cut myself on one of the knives in the kitchen.”

“Were you trying to make something?”

“Just fooling around.”

“Knives are dangerous. You shouldn’t play with them.”

“Relax, I’m not going to die from them. I’m not stupid enough to stab myself with it.”

“I wasn’t trying to say you were.”

“It sounded like it.”

“Then I’m sorry.”

Arei stared at him, confusion clouding her pretty blue eyes, before scowling. “What’s up with you? There’s something weird about you, but I don’t know what, and that’s bothering me.”

Xander chuckled nervously and rubbed the back of his neck. “I’m not sure what you’re talking about.”

“You know what I’m talking about. So, what, did you fight someone? Someone insulted you? Are you homesick? Tired of everything? Like, what’s the problem?”

“You’re the last person I expect to ask me those questions.”

“How stupid do you think I am if you think I’m falling for that?” Arei leaned forward ever-so slightly, her fingers, even her injured index finger, gripping themselves onto the white bedsheet. Her eyes bright with anger, her gaze pinning him down, daring him to argue against her.

Xander would love to do that, to give in to what she wanted and relax into the thin strings of what was their relationship, but not now nor ever again. He couldn’t tell her he was going to murder Teruko, but he could tell her some of what he was fretting over. “I was just...thinking about how I—how anyone here—could die in less than 24 hours from now.”

For a second, Arei’s expression falter, leaving a softer face. However, it was replaced with the look she had just before so fast that he wondered if he had simply imagined it. “Yeah, well, suck it up. You’re in a killing game, so obviously people are going to die, idiot! People die in the real world anyway. What’s so different about dying here and dying out there?”

“A lot, actually.”

She was ready to argue but said, “Fair point...” Her expression went back to the face she had before, proving he hadn’t imagined it and she could look so thoughtful.

“It’s hard to ignore it,” he continued. “I know I should try not to think about it—”

“You should think about it.”

“But it won’t be that good—”

“Aren’t you supposed to be the Ultimate Rebel? You want wrong stuff to be right or whatever. This is wrong. Ignoring it won’t do anything to change it.”

“I guess...”

“You’re so quiet, and it’s so weird.” Arei shuddered. “Where’s all the yelling? Do I have to make fun of your Ultimate title to get you to act normal?”

“Why do you care if I act normal or not?”

“Because it’s weird like I just said?”

“I just didn’t think you would care.”

“Why would I not care about people being stupid? I love people being stupid! But only if it’s the funny-stupid and not the annoying- or weird-stupid.”

“I’m the annoying-stupid and weird-stupid, right?”

“Obviously!”

Xander sighed, but he felt a small smile on his face.

Arei stood up and stretched her fingers. “Well, I’m going to head off if you’re going to be weird—”

“Wait, no, don’t go.” Xander didn’t know why she was looking at him weirdly until he realized he had invaded her personal space and took her wrist. It was the same hand that she injured. He let go and took several steps back. “Sorry, I, umm...didn’t mean to do that... Sorry...”

She gave him a look as she held her wrist closer to her chest. She stayed silent for a moment before talking again. “Like I was saying, I was going to leave now if you’re being weird. But if you’re going to freak out again, I don’t actually think you’re weird.”

“You don’t?”

“I do. But not enough to leave a room, I guess. There’s weirder people we’re stuck with in here.”

“I think that’s the nicest things you’ve ever told me.”

“I can be nice if I want to be.”

He smiled. “I never said you can’t.”

She stared at his face, then scoffed and rolled her eyes. “Whatever. I’m still leaving now. I wanna bug people. Maybe J. She’s fun.”

“Don’t annoy her too much.”

“What are you, my dad?”

“Just looking out for other people.”

“You do you. Bye, Xander!”

“Bye, Arei.” Xander tried to focus on everything about Arei as she left. The last thing he saw of her was her hand touching her gloved wrist. That was, from what he could tell, the last he would see of Arei—the last he would see of anyone before getting Teruko to murder her.

Alone in the infirmary again, Xander smiled. Arei didn’t realize it, even if she was a little suspicious of him, but she did help him feel more relaxed. He most likely would panic again once he was face-to-face with Teruko in the computer lab, but that would be later. For now, this was okay. A silent thank-you to Arei.

As Arei's biggest fan, I take Arei's birthday to be a very important celebration, so I'll be posting (or, at least, trying to post) something about her every day until November 3rd - such as art, edits, memes, fun facts, etc.

Teruko had everything planned out for this day. She was going to buy you a cake (because every time she tries to cook, she burns the kitchen) and then gift you something you wanted for a while while you two were alone,she wanted this to be a small and intimate thing, she had a plan and it was gonna work, but of course like always her luck was in the way.

Somehow, the day before your birthday,the bakery ran out of cakes, and the price of the thing you wanted increased beyond her budget,she should've expected this but she thought that maybe only for a day her luck would leave her alone to celebrate her partner's birthday.

She settled for buying you a cupcake and picking another cheaper gift. after a day spent all with you trying to make you happy, she took out what she had and looked at you in an embarrassed way.

"Hm,happy birthday y/n,I know this sucks but my luck decided to be a bitch today too,I swear I wanted to do something better"

"Don't worry teru,I still love this,just spending time with you is enough of a gift for me"

She also prepared for this day in advance. Your birthday is one of the few days when she won't study at all, even if she has a test the next day,that's how much she loves you.

As we know, she's a pretty good baker, so she'll try to bake you a cake herself, making sure it's with your favorite flavors and doesn't have anything you might be allergic to or just don't like.

She brought you a book as a gift,you got scared seeing just how big it was but she told you you could read it together.

"Happy birthday y/n,i hope we can celebrate many more special occasions while we're together"

She probably forgot about it until eden mentioned it to her

"By the way,what are you and y/n doing for their birthday?"

"Uh?"

"Didn't you know? Their birthday is tomorrow"

"............."

In her defense, the moment she realized it, she went all out. She straight up rented an entire bowling alley and had someone decorate it for the party.

She had no idea what to get you but she doesn't want you to think she's a bad girlfriend, so she tells eden to sneakily ask you, you know it's actually arei but you know how she is so you forgive her.

During this day, arei is probably the nicest she ever is both because she wants to happily celebrate with you and because she feels incredibly guilty for forgetting about it.

"OK you can open your eyes now. Ta da! What do you think? I've spared no expenses for my awesome partner's b-day.

Hu jing

She has a reminder on her calendar for every occasion that involves you two,your anniversary,your first kiss,and of course your birthday so she was as prepared as one can be.

She enlisted everyone's help to make a huge surprise party for you,she distracted you by spending the entire day with you while everyone else prepared the party.

After the party she spent some time alone with you, she gave you a gift you wanted and played a special song on her zither she made especially for you.

"Happy birthday, my dearest,I love you and I hope I showed you that during this amazing day,I want to spend so many more amazing moment like this with you"

She doesn't really treat your birthday as a surprise or that big of a deal. She loves celebrating it,of course,she just hates big and fancy parties(probably because of her mother)

She took you shopping and asked you what you wanted as a gift you were surprised by her bluntness but still happy she remembered it.

She brought you a cake on the way home and just stayed with you for the rest of the day like a cozy home date.

"Hey, happy birthday, I know it's not much, but I hope you like it, I love you, and I hope I showed you that"

Veronika grebenshchikova

You're getting a horror themed birthday whether you like it or not,but you're dating Veronika, so you're probably used to it. She's decorating your whole room with horror decorations like it's Halloween. The only reason you can tell it's for you is the big happy birthday sign in the middle.

She cosplays as your favorite horror movie character to surprise you. She also bakes you a cake herself with the words "happy birthday y/n" in red jelly to make it seem like blood

She gives you whatever gift you wanted (even If you didn't tell her she found a way to know) and ends the day with watching your favorite horror movie while cuddling.

"Happy birthday darling,do you like this? A bit too much horror? Sorry, but you know how I am. I couldn't resist.

Rose lacroix

The opposite of arei, thanks to her perfect memory, she remembered the exact date of your birthday even without a reminder,same thing goes for your gift, she got you something you wanted even if you just mentioned it in passing once.

She also painted a picture for you:maybe of a moment of you two together or just something you like it's the most beautiful painting ever in your eyes.

She was surprisingly awake during the day,she didn't even take a nap or yawn she told you she'd never miss your special day even for a moment.

★ — she loves birthday gifts. she likes giving them to people to see their reaction, and she likes receiving them

★ — she’s so annoying (/aff) about her birthday. she’ll constantly justify things with “well i’m the birthday girl, it’s my day!”

★ — ever since her sisters forcefully cut her hair, it’s never been completely even. even if she could fix it, she doesn’t want to get it cut again.

★ — one of the reasons she wears her braid is to cover up how unevenly cut her hair is. the other is just that she likes doing her hair

★ — early off into the year, some of the girls baked a cake, and arei expressed her jealousy. on her birthday, eden dragged her into the kitchen to bake a cake with her.

★ — arei just refuses to do any homework on her birthday. “oh this worksheet is due tomorrow at the start of class? looks like i have to get it done five minutes before class starts!”

★ — she is VERY adamant on certain things. they’re not even important things, just stupid stuff like what colour certain school subjects are

★ — when she was younger, she used to be into zodiacs. she found it amusing

★ — at her highschool, whenever she needed a break she would go onto the roof and just sit there.

★ — she’s one of those people who love spending an afternoon trying on different outfits in her closet.

★ — she’s a pretty touchy person. often she’ll teasingly poke somebody or lean in too close. for when she is being emotionally open, she tends to latch onto somebody.

God damn it’s so far past new years. Sorry I somehow didn’t see this until now, but better 2 and a half months late than never…?

Teruko Tawaki: Regularly forgets its New years. She had more important things to worry about on the run, but at Hope’s Peak she tried to join in on the festivities and pretend she cared. She enjoyed being invited to a party for once.

Xander Matthews: …It was never the same celebrating after his family died. Just like how everything else wasn’t the same. Another year without them. Yay. Being surrounded by friends at Hope’s Peak helped get his mind off things, though, and he brought some alcohol to the class party. Unless the school staff asks, in that case he totally didn’t.

Charles Cuevas: It never held too much importance to him. He did find it annoying how he had to remember to write a different year every time he tried to write down the date, because he’d often forget and have to rewrite it. Whit convinced him to celebrate New Years with the class, and he had a decent bit of fun.

Ace Markey: He gets extremely existential, unsurprisingly. Being reminded of the passage of time makes him anxious, so he’s not the biggest fan. He went to the party and was one of few to not drink Xander’s totally-not-alcoholic beverages, and from listening to what everyone was saying while intoxicated he knows many more secrets than he should.

Arei Nageishi: Probably throws confetti at midnight and then makes someone else (Eden) pick it up. New Years never garnered much fanfare at home, but she joined Ace in not drinking and took many photos for blackmail—Er, totally not malicious purposes.

Rose Lacroix: Falls asleep waaaay before midnight and misses all the festivities. She went to the party, but ended up falling asleep at the snack table. Eventually she got woken up by Nico right before midnight, and as soon as that was over she made a beeline for her dorm. A bed sounded nice.

Hu Jing: She enjoyed spending time with her family, even if she thought staying up that late could be exhausting. At Hope’s Peak she was just trying to make sure nobody died during the party, which was surprisingly hard. Still, the promise of a New Year, full of new possibilities did bring her a bit of excitement. She’s overcome with the joy of the realization she’s made it this far and managed to make so many new, valuable connections.

Eden Tobisa: An excuse to celebrate something with her close family and friends?!? Count her in! She likes it not only because of her birthday, but because she loves the feeling of new beginnings and a chance to turn everything even better. She loved seeing everyone spending time together and having fun at the party.

Levi Fontana: He isn’t too passionate about the holiday, but he likes to make New Year’s resolutions and trying to improve himself. He’s in the 2% minority of people who don’t give up on their resolutions a month in. He joins Hu in trying to make sure nobody dies at the party.

Arturo Giles: He likes to see what celebrity is on TV and preforming a New Year’s Eve show, but other than that he’s not very interested. He didn’t want to go to the party, but Veronika dragged him along. He didn’t even try to pretend he didn’t want to be there.

Min Jeung: In the past, she mostly just spent New Years studying, unsurprisingly. One year closer to seeing if she would become the Ultimate Student. She ended up hiding under a table and reading during the party, eventually joined by Teruko.

David Chiem: Time to profit off of everyone’s newfound desire to change themselves for the better! While this time of year has his business more profitable than usual, that means to maximize profits he has to work more, which he finds exhausting. He finds everything about this time of year exhausting. At the party, he ended up kissing Xander…Ten bucks says neither of them remember by morning.

Veronika Grebenshchikova: Horror movie marathon until midnight, naturally. She finds the New Year ever-so-slightly exciting, she supposes. At the party, she tries to get everyone to play truth or dare and proceeds to either try and make them reveal incredibly personal secrets or do incredibly dangerous things. Xander is the only one who tries one of her dares, but ends up getting stopped before the can accidentally hurt himself.

J Rosales: Another year with her Mom, great…She was pretty neutral on New Years in the past, honestly. She went to the party and had a decent bit of fun, and once again made the New Year’s resolution to go to the gym more so she could get really buff and shit (She rarely follows through for more than a month or so, but she’s planning to ask Levi if he could be her gym partner and she hopes she’ll be too prideful to quit if someone else is doing it with her).

Whit Young: Used to spend New Years alone at home. He is now making the most of having friends around, and gleefully goes to the party. He teases a lot of people about who they’re going to kiss at midnight, but mostly gets responses asking about if he’s going to finally make a move on Charles and he immediately gets flustered and changes the subject.

Nico Hakobyan: They usually aren’t thrilled about spending five extra hours around people when they just want to go to bed. They begrudgingly attend the party after much contemplation, because they get nervous they’ll miss out on something and regret it later. They end up sleeping at the snack table with Rose for most of it.
