Ways For US-Americans To Help If You're Abstaining From Voting
Can't vote on moral grounds, but still raring to do something? Stuck in America and unsure of how to meaningfully serve your community? Here are some ideas that I, a social worker serving house-bound citizens, can share out of personal experience. Feel free to add other ideas or links. We are not powerless.
Volunteer (these are just examples/sources of info)
Planned Parenthood needs volunteers for nearly every non-medical department
See if your state has a volunteer stewardship program, where you can help weed out invasive plant species and defend your natural ecosystem
If you have medical skills, become a street medic
Contribute to the preservation of Queer History
Put your labor towards the upkeep or repair of properties in Indigenous communities
Adult literacy is not great right now, and we're harder to lie to if we're literate; volunteer to help your neighbors who were failed by the school system
Resources to help the unhoused constantly need volunteer counselors, cooks, and someone to sort donations
The sick and elderly are very under-served, particularly if they're broke, so reach out to a local hospice to see what skills they need
Give (if you can't physically volunteer but have money to spare)
Donate to an abortion fund; this one is for Native peoples specifically
Donate to a book gifting program or book mobile; this link is for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Donate to preserve the histories of communities of color; this fund is specifically for preserving African American historical sites
Donate to protect the natural environment
Donate to help free those caged in prisons; this link is for the Innocence Project, which aims to challenge wrongful convictions
The arts are for everyone, but wealth gaps interfere; this fund is for art initiatives that contribute to community building, including increasing accessibility
Learn (resources that many communities have but aren't widely educated on)
Community Action Agencies: these are non-profits and private companies that act in service of their communities' human rights and quality of life. Many have utility funds, run food banks, manage emergency shelters, provide education and job skills opportunities, and participate in social activism.
Area Agencies on Aging: Non-profits that serve elders (and non-elderly disabled citizens) in a designated service area. They primarily offer services to prolong independent living (free or low cost in home care, meals on wheels, home safety modifications, and Medicare guidance) or help with transition into assisted living.
Habitat For Humanity: They aren't just in disaster zones or on foreign soil; they have local US chapters that provide critical repairs to families in need. They repair roofs, address barriers to access, and perform electric and plumbing work.
Durable Medical Equipment Loan Closets: Communal sources of vital medical equipment including wheelchairs, walkers, canes, hospital beds, shower chairs, and more. May be able to provide incontinence supplies or diabetes supplies. Rarely but sometimes provide oxygen.
Non Emergency Medical Transportation/Alternatives to Mass Transit: Transportation for elderly, disabled, cognitively impaired, and low income citizens to help them reach medical providers, dental care, physical therapy, and eye exam appointments. Can also provide transit to shopping centers, the grocery store, religious events, cultural events, and polling stations. Offer door to door services for the housebound. IF YOU HAVE MEDICAID, YOU SHOULD NOT EVER BE PAYING FOR THIS. MEDICAID IS OBLIGATED TO MAKE SURE YOU REACH ANY AND ALL MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS.
Legal Aid Clinics: Sources of pro-bono or sliding scale legal advice and representation.

Personal: For Profit Healthcare and Me
So remember how Peacehealth drove all the independent offices in four specialties out of business, thus forcing everyone to use their clinic, then closed those clinics to force everyone to go to their central clinic two counties to the south? And remember how both the Doctors who were running that clinic made a deal to operate out of a clinic a regional medical conglomerate was opening near the hospital? so instead of me spending all day on a sixty mile each way trek for my treatment I was using the last three months of skeleton crew treatment at old clinic which ended the last Thursday in September? Remember how they said we could all follow our doctors there?
Yeah, about that.
I've been dutifully calling ever two weeks to see if they were letting people schedule appointments yet. They sent out a letter saying they were open. I stayed up Tuesday to get in sorted. it was a whole drama because the automated maze to get to the scheduler was as much of a hassle as Peacehealth's and prone to dropping calls, forcing one to start from scratch each time. so that was frustrating and tine consuming.
Apparently they have no access to our health records, so it was a start from scratch situation. Me, mentally: Shit! This is going to be HOURS. Only it wasn't for all the wrong reasons. They take Medicare, but not Medicare Advantage. So if I want it covered I have to lose most of my benefits including having Medicaid pay my big Medicare copay. O.o. Or I can pay for expensive treatments myself as uninsured.
I was upset, but I remembered superstar medical social worker lady personally calling around town to talk dentists into taking medicare dental coverage for me thus opening up my small city so that medicare patients can now get root canals and crowns instead of learning to live without chewing.
So I still thought it was salvageable. Problem is she's gone and the woman replacing her is a busy supervisor who likes to call me two hours into my sleep cycle without warning and then gets angry at me for not being charming. Previous lady asked when was best to call and would schedule calls in advance for a time when I was able to be awake and functional. it is a lot easier for me to be charming when I wasn't just ripped out of REM sleep and am now being interrogated about something.
New lady is a supervisor and super busy with supervisor things and is made of no and is snippy. I can not make her understand that not only is a 120 mile round trip over mountain passes dealing with the traffic mess along the highway in the major metropolitan area where I once got caught in a four hour traffic jam and couldn't get off to pee, is an entire exhausting day for me and that plus a treatment would not only mean i could do anything useful that day, but the next day to. She can't grasp how much pain is involved in long car trips or how much treatments take out of me. She keeps hard selling me on this and then calling me resistant and recalcitrant like I'm the one being unreasonable for considering this basically insurmountable at my level of disability.
She did not fight the in town clinic for me. She did not try to argue them around.
Her, repeating a suggestion she has made over and over since the closing announcement: You should just get your GP to do it.
Me, explaining for at least the third time because we have this conversation every time we talk: I asked my GP last spring like you asked. They can't do it. It can't be administered by a GP. They'd need to hire a specialist and build new facilities for compounding and for special storage of medication.
Her: Well just ask you GP to give you a different treatment.
Me: There are no other treatments. I have medications to manage symptoms. These treatments are the cure. There is only one cure.
Her: You are being recalcitrant!
Me: There is literally only one cure. No new ones have been invented since last February. The cure is working. I'm getting better. i will get worse again with only symptom management.
But she kept arguing with me because I was being stubborn about facts being facts. My GP can't pull an entire brand new treatment regimen out of her ass. She would not let it go or let me go and I was exhausted because it was hours past when I would normally be asleep at this point and also what was the point of her hard selling me on demanding the imaginary alternative treatment or the 120 mile trip. I ended up giving and and saying something like, "I have to go now," which I know is rude, but we spent this entire conversation with her neither listing not understanding and basically acting like I was the asshole here.
So I'm fucked and I'm frustrated and angry. I was literally at the point where I was going to get better really quickly if I kept doing treatments, but if we stop now I'll be back to square one with it all to do again if another clinic opens.
And it's all like this because Obama and Biden didn't have the balls to stick to their universal free healthy care guns and decided to adopt the capitalist give away Republican health plan in pursuit of bipartisan buy in they did not get, which anyone paying attention told them they could not get, which Mitch McConnell vowed they'd never get as part of the project to make Obama a one term president at all costs. They burned all their political capital on a bullshit give away to insurance companies when they could have taken the same or less of a hit just giving up a developed country level health care system. No fucked up website needed for sign ups. No red tape or copays or catch 22 shit like I'm dealing with now.

TW: Body deformation, self surgery, vermins
ANM №: ANM-590
Identification: Parasitic Gingival Larvae
Danger Level: Kali 🟠 | Contained ⭕️
Responsible Researcher: None
Anomaly Type: Parasitic, insectoid
Confinement: All instances of ANM-590 larvae are to be contained in a standard containment chamber at Department-05, equipped with a positive-pressure ventilation system to prevent the spread of eggs or larvae. The chamber is to be regularly monitored by Level 2 personnel, and entry is restricted to medical staff or researchers with Level 3 clearance or higher.
Any personnel exposed to ANM-590 are to undergo immediate decontamination and report to D-05's medical wing for examination. If signs of infestation are found, the affected individual is to be quarantined and treated with oral surgical removal procedures followed by a course of antiparasitic medication.
All captured instances of ANM-590 adult specimens are to be kept in an airtight containment chamber and destroyed by incineration. Under no circumstances are live adult specimens to be allowed to escape or reproduce outside of containment. Field agents are tasked with monitoring dental clinics, hospitals, and any locations with reported cases of unexplained gingival inflammation or infestations of unknown parasites.
Description: ANM-590 refers to an anomalous species of parasitic botfly (Diptera: Oestridae) that exclusively targets the gingival (gum) tissue of human hosts. Adult ANM-590 specimens are visually similar to non-anomalous botflies (Dermatobia hominis) but exhibit several key deviations. Most notably, ANM-590 demonstrates a unique parasitic reproductive cycle, wherein its larvae (designated ANM-590-1) develop within the soft tissues of the human oral cavity, specifically targeting the gums.
Life Cycle and Reproduction:
1. Adult Stage:
ANM-590 adults resemble a typical botfly in appearance, with iridescent green and black coloration and an approximate body length of 12-14 mm. Unlike common botflies, ANM-590 adults are active primarily during nighttime, seeking out human hosts through a combination of chemical signals, including pheromones produced by the human body and trace amounts of blood from gingival irritation or damage, or from bacteria likely to appear if the individual does not brush their teeth.
During oviposition, an adult ANM-590 will release a specialized neurotoxin via its ovipositor to numb the host's gums. Once the host is anesthetized, the fly deposits eggs directly beneath the gum line. This process is generally painless and often goes unnoticed by the victim.
2. Egg and Larval Stage (AMM-590-1):
After approximately 48 to 72 hours, ANM-590 eggs hatch into larvae (ANM-590-1). The larvae possess highly specialized mandibles, which allow them to burrow into the soft tissue of the gums. As they develop, ANM-590-1 larvae feed on both blood and gingival tissue, causing localized swelling, bleeding, and irritation. This stage lasts 10 to 14 days, during which time the larvae grow to a size of 8-10 mm in length.
Hosts report symptoms similar to periodontal disease, including:
Persistent itching or tingling sensation in the gums
Swollen or bleeding gums, especially when brushing teeth or eating
Unexplained tooth sensitivity
In rare cases, sensations of "crawling" or movement within the gums
Once mature, the larvae migrate toward the surface of the gums, often concentrating around the base of the teeth. At this stage, they secrete an enzyme that dissolves part of the gum tissue, creating small abscesses or lesions that allow the larvae to escape. In some cases, larvae can be manually expelled by squeezing the affected area, though this can lead to secondary infections.
3. Pupal Stage and Emergence:
Once the larvae emerge, they fall to the ground and burrow into the nearest soft substrate, where they enter the pupal stage. After approximately 1-2 weeks, adult ANM-590 flies emerge and the cycle begins anew.
Anomalous Properties:
ANM-590-1 larvae exhibit rapid tissue regeneration and healing properties in their host, preventing severe damage to the gums despite extensive feeding. This is believed to be a survival adaptation that ensures the host remains functional until the larvae reach maturity. The host's immune system is also suppressed, minimizing inflammatory responses, which further allows the larvae to go unnoticed.
While ANM-590 infestations do not typically result in fatalities, they can cause long-term dental damage if untreated. In severe cases, ANM-590 larvae may become dislodged and enter the bloodstream, causing embolisms or systemic infections, although this is exceedingly rare.
Psychological effects have been noted in several cases. Infested individuals frequently report anxiety, insomnia, and obsessive-compulsive behaviors related to oral hygiene, often excessively brushing or flossing their teeth in an attempt to alleviate the sensation of crawling or itching.
Discovery:
ANM-590 was first identified in 20██ after a series of reports surfaced from rural villages in Belford Roxo, Brazil, where several individuals had been admitted to local hospitals for extreme gingival irritation. Initial reports were dismissed as cases of severe periodontal disease or fungal infections, but further investigation by Institute agents revealed that the symptoms were caused by an unknown parasitic entity.
Subsequent containment efforts led to the identification of several breeding sites in tropical forested regions, where adult ANM-590 specimens were captured for study. Due to the widespread nature of non-anomalous botfly species, it is believed that ANM-590 may have existed undetected for decades before being formally classified by the MOTHRA.
Addendum 590-A:
Interview Log 590-04:
Interview with Dr. Moron, a Institute dentist and researcher who was exposed to ANM-590 while examining a patient.
Interviewer: Dr. █████
Date: 20██
Dr. Moron: "The itching. It was unbearable. At first, I thought it was just dry gums, maybe an allergic reaction to something. But then… I felt it, like something was moving under the surface. I had this irrational urge to dig into my gums, to get whatever was inside me out."
Interviewer: "You performed a self-extraction, correct?"
Dr. Moron: "Yes. I used a pair of sterilized dental tweezers and started probing around one of the swollen areas. That's when I saw them. Tiny, wriggling white larvae, right at the base of my molar. I can still feel it sometimes, even though they’re all gone. It’s like they left something behind."
Interviewer: "Did you experience any psychological effects?"
Dr. Moron: "Every night I dream about it. The sensation of them moving, feeding, growing. I keep imagining they’re still in there, just deeper. Hiding."
Addendum 590-B:
Following the interview, Dr. Moron was placed on temporary medical leave and has been referred to psychological counseling due to ongoing symptoms of parasitosis and persistent gum irritation. No further ANM-590 larvae were found during follow-up examinations.
Note: Personnel exposed to ANM-590 should be monitored closely for similar psychological aftereffects, even after physical decontamination and removal. Further research into the long-term effects of ANM-590 infestation is ongoing.
Addendum 590-C:
Due to increased reports of ANM-590 infestations in urban areas, containment teams have been deployed to dental clinics and hospitals in high-risk regions. Task Force "Mouthwashers" has been created to respond to outbreaks and prevent ANM-590 from spreading into densely populated areas.

How To Choose the Best Dental College in Maharashtra
Choosing the right dental college is a critical step for aspiring dentists, as it lays the foundation for their future careers in dentistry. Maharashtra, known for its rich educational heritage, houses several top-notch dental colleges, including both government and private institutions.
However, the abundance of options often makes the decision-making process overwhelming for students.
In this blog, we'll explore the key factors to consider when selecting the best dental college in Maharashtra, with a focus on private dental colleges.
Accreditation and Recognition
The foremost factor to consider is the accreditation and recognition of the college. A college accredited by the Dental Council of India (DCI) ensures that the curriculum meets national standards for dental education. Recognition by reputable educational bodies also speaks volumes about the college's commitment to quality education. Ensure the college you choose is recognized and has a good standing in the academic community.
Curriculum and Academic Excellence
The curriculum offered by the college should be comprehensive and up-to-date, covering all aspects of dental science. It should also offer practical and clinical exposure to students from the early stages of the course. The academic excellence of a college can be gauged by its faculty, research opportunities, and the performance of its alumni. Look for colleges that have a track record of producing top-notch dentists.
Infrastructure and Facilities
A good dental college should have state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities, including modern dental clinics, laboratories, and libraries. Access to advanced dental equipment and technology is crucial for hands-on training. Also, consider the availability of hostel facilities, especially if you're relocating from another city.
Clinical Exposure
Clinical exposure is critical in dental education, as it provides students with real-world experience. The dental college in Maharashtra should have a tie-up with hospitals or run its dental hospital, ensuring ample clinical exposure to its students. This not only helps in understanding the practical aspects of dentistry but also in gaining confidence in performing dental procedures.
Placement Opportunities
Consider the college's placement record, as it indicates the opportunities available to its graduates. A college with a strong placement cell can help in securing positions in reputable hospitals, dental clinics, and healthcare institutions. Networking opportunities provided by the college also play a significant role in career advancement.
Fees and Scholarships
Private dental colleges in Maharashtra may have varying fee structures. While investing in quality education is important, it's also necessary to consider the financial aspect. Compare the fees of different colleges and check for the availability of scholarships or financial aid programs that can alleviate the financial burden.
Alumni Network and Reputation
A college's reputation is often reflected in the success of its alumni. Research the achievements of alumni to get an idea of the college's quality of education and networking opportunities. A strong alumni network can be invaluable for professional growth and opportunities in the future.
Location
The location of the college is another practical aspect to consider. Proximity to home, the cost of living in the area, and the climate are factors that can affect your overall college experience.
Conclusion
Choosing the best dental college in Maharashtra requires careful consideration of various factors, including accreditation, curriculum, infrastructure, clinical exposure, placement opportunities, fees, alumni network, and location.
Private dental colleges in Maharashtra offer a plethora of options for aspiring dentists, and by focusing on these critical aspects, students can make an informed decision that aligns with their career goals and aspirations.
Remember, the right college can provide not just an education but a pathway to a successful and fulfilling career in dentistry.

what do you mean by wait time? I thought you were canadian? Don't you guys have free healthcare?
So, unfortunately in canada, Free healthcare doesn't mean "timely" health care, or getting whatever care whenever you want it. Its sadly not like poppin' in for a hair cut, or showing up for dental work. (dental is private still. I'm fairly sure. ) Like health care in canada is very very VERY backed up. It was like that prior to covid but it covid defs I feel like exhausted existing gaps. Like in BC - because I lived there for awhile, and I feel comfortable speaking about BC. there's areas were people don't have access to GPS/family drs and no walkins. (Or didn't in 2022) Like Canada also has health care deserts. Interior of BC is like that. (Outside of the vancouver/greater vancouver area. Anything outside of there, its very spotty depending on areas.) Which means too people sadly have to go to hospitals. (And this sucks because people need prescriptions.) Like it wasn't uncommon to see questioned posed on fb groups aimed for the city I lived in for 9ish months. About does that city have a walk-in/gp/family dr. And are waitlists being taken, etc. I heard this question even at a pharmacy, a lady came in with her small child, who had what she believed is a ear infection& wanted drops. She was told they can't give drops, she needs a prescription. So she asked are there clinics in the area? She was told there's no clinics local - and she'd have to take her wee one to the hospital. This is the same message fb groups would have. No clinicals locally, hospital. I couldn't even get breast imaging done in that town. you can't self referral. You need a gp/family dr/ walk in to give you the paperwork/do referral. ^^;' Which is one of the things I had to wait for. Until I moved again, to Alberta. & in alberta, my GP isn't close to me. He's almost 2 hours away. But he was also the only one accepting patients when we moved. And this is closer than my previously dr in bc. I do see some work towards offering more options that are in person. (everyone constantly pushes people to telus and there telehealth. Telus is a phone/internet/cable company. For americans this would be like AT&T getting into the health market.) I've noticed pharmacys now can write scripts for mild health issues, or for things like diabetes. (YAY) I do see some family drs opening up now, collecting lists of patients, and some walkins. (also some walkins are ran by pharmacists, so they are again for "mild" causes. Like probably could go in with a rash from your squashes and be like 'this itchy, i touched squash leafs' pharmacist be like 'new to gardening huh? alright well uh. here." - Squash leafs can cause rashes. just so folks know lol. ) But yeah. I also don't think this is all of canada. I can only speak about what I see locally. But health care in canada is extremely backed up, and depending on service and severity medical professionals believe you are, (I.e. they believe your moderate/mild vs severe) you could be waiting. I've been waiting on my referral since March this year. Even with the rectum bleeding i'm still counted as "mild/moderate". & I won't be able to "see" my specialist until late sept. (And what I mean by "see" I mean, we have a phone call aptoment scheduled... from there hopefully I get referral for colonoscopy, and for follow up that can be in person. but I honestly don't know.)

the full story of how I got Reggie:
Calypso died in early Nov of 2019. By the end of Jan 2020, I was starting to feel ready for a new cat or cats.
I made the post on my FB about looking for a “used orange cat” and my friend Angie who works at a vet hospital on the south side saw it. Not four days later, I got a message from her about an orange boy they had at her office who was looking for a home. She explained that they had a deal with the city of Carlisle, just south of Des Moines, to help rehome strays their PD picked up.
Angie sent a few pics of the cat and said he was very friendly, and healthy apart from needing a couple teeth pulled. I made a trip down to the south side to meet him. I had used this particular vet hospital before, when Trinity needed the radioiodine treatment for her hyperthyroid.
When I met the cat, he was such a love, let me hold him, not shy at all. I was honestly convinced that he belonged to someone, and that I shouldn’t get my hopes up. He was in the middle of a seven-day waiting period to be claimed. When I got home, I even searched on some Iowa missing pet sites to see if someone had reported him lost.
A few days later, I got another message from Angie. As no one had come to claim him, the sweet orange cat could be mine. I made arrangements to pick him up after work on the 4th. [edit--the caucuses were on the 3rd and I had preemptively taken PTO for the day after, and it came in handy] I bought a few supplies so he could have his own bed that didn’t smell like the old cats, and some wet food since he had that broken tooth. Before I left the clinic, I made an appointment to bring him back for the tooth extraction in a couple days.
I took the cat home and set up a little area for him in the same upstairs bedroom where Trinity had rehabbed after an operation. He had a litterbox, food dish, water bowl, a cat bed, and the pineapple house. I played with him and let him settle in. He enjoyed going behind the curtain so I put the cat bed behind it to give him a place to sit.
In my original FB post I had made a joke about wanting a cat in “size XL,” as Calypso had been a pretty big cat. But as I looked at this new boy, I thought about how small he was, or rather medium-sized. I remembered a gag on the Birthday Boys TV show about variety show acts named “Big Reginald” “Little Reginald” and “Medium Reginald.” So I gave my medium-sized cat a medium name, “Medium Reginald” or “Reggie” for short. I did a cursory google for orange+cat+Reggie and was delighted to learn that one of the animal actors who played the orange in Captain Marvel was named Reggie.
The timing, of course, ended up being particularly auspicious, as before long I was at home all day, every day, giving us plenty of time to bond together. He recovered well from the dental surgery, and he was doing well on the wet food, so I decided to keep him on that since I was always home to give him breakfast and dinner. I slept upstairs with him for the first couple weeks, then slowly started introducing him to the rest of the house.
We’re coming up on three years together and I’m so glad it worked out the way it did. Sometimes I feel his little toe beans and think about how rough they were when I first brought him home. He was not meant for the streets; he was meant to be my little son and friend ❤️❤️❤️

How to Choose an Emergency Dentist
If you find yourself in need of dental care during an emergency, your best bet is to find an emergency dentist. Here are some tips to help you choose the right one for you:
Research your options: When looking for an emergency dentist, be sure to do your research. There are a lot of great options available, so it’s important to identify which ones fit your needs.
Ask around: If you can’t find a reputable dentist online or through friends and family, ask around for recommendations. You may be surprised at just how many people have had positive experiences with an emergency dentist.
Consider location and accessibility: Remember that not all dentists are located in major cities – some may be based out of regional hospitals or clinics that are more accessible if needed during an emergency situation. Also keep in mind whether the dentist is open 24/7 or not – some may only be available during specific hours on weekdays or weekends, so it’s important to plan ahead if possible.
Inquire about insurance coverage and payment plans: Some dentists offer discounted rates for those who have health insurance coverage, while others may accept payment plans that work well for you financially (either cash or credit). It’s always a good idea to check with the doctor before making any arrangements so there are no surprises down the road!

Ask friends or family members for recommendations: They may have had great experiences with certain dentists and recommend them to you.

Check out their website and testimonials: Review their website and read customer testimonials to get a sense of what their practice is like from someone who has already used them. This will help put your mind at ease before making an appointment!
Get insurance information if needed. Some emergency dentists require patients to have supplemental health insurance in order to be treated on-site (this varies from dentist to dentist). Make sure you know this

This is a very famous photo, which has been featured online in many lists of "handsome samurai" and has also been used in advertising. It was taken in 1880 (Meiji period) and shows 20-year-old Oda Nobuyoshi, who was a dentist, having just finished his studies in Edo.
There's a lesser known photo of Nobuyoshi in the collection of his great-grandson, Oda Hidemasa, who carries on the family business of dentistry at Oda Dental Clinic in Kochi City, which was founded in 1925 and is still going strong with a new building next to the original one.
Nobuyoshi certainly knew how to pose for a picture. 😅

Speaking of photos, there are a disproportionately large number of known photos of Dr. Matsumoto Ryojun still in existence. Here are a few I've been able to find, with descriptions where available.
Dr. Matsumoto, sitting front left, with Dr. Johannes Pompe van Meerdervoort, seated front right, and fellow doctors in Nagasaki.
Matsumoto went to Nagasaki in summer of 1857 as a student of Western studies at the Nagasaki Naval Training Center, where, among other things, he studied medicine under Pompe, a Dutch army surgeon.
While at first a group of 12 medical students met at the home of Takashima Shuan for lectures on biology, chemistry, anatomy, and pathology, by November of that year Pompe established a separate school of Western medicine.
Although the Nagasaki Naval Training Center closed in 1860 and the Dutch staff left, Pompe remained and opened Japan's first western-style hospital, Nagasaki Yojosho, in 1861. (The location is now Nagasaki University's medical school.)

A little “Today I Learned” write-up of notes regarding textiles in the Edo period:
+ The Kansai region, which is the area surrounding the imperial capital of Kyoto and the port of Osaka, was important in both the silk textile industry (mostly around Kyoto) and, after the 16th Century, the cotton industry (mostly around Osaka).
+ Cotton was introduced to Japan from Korea in the 1400s.
+ By the beginning of the Edo period (the early 1600s), cotton had become the primary material used in commoners’ clothing in most of Japan, replacing materials made from other types of plant fibers.
That’s not to say things weren’t still commonly made from asa (hemp or ramie) or from other plant fibers such as mulberry or wisteria - they were, especially in rural areas - but the more expensive cotton quickly became the most common choice.
On a side note: in some translations, you might see the English word linen as a translation for asa, which isn’t technically correct as linen is made from flax, which was not cultivated in Edo period Japan. The first flax in Japan is grown in Hokkaido in 1871.
+ Aside from the large amounts of cotton planted for the cotton textile trade, it was often grown in small quantities sufficient just for household consumption.
+ The Edo period and its bureaucracies placed a great deal of emphasis on laws and regulations that reinforced class structure, such as Aizu’s rules specifying which color haori-himo could be worn by which class of samurai, or Tosa’s rules forbidding low-ranking samurai from wearing certain footwear.
One sumptuary law passed by the Tokugawa shogunate limited purple outer garments to nobility and high-ranking samurai. Another banned the wearing of red outer garments, which were dyed with expensive saffron dye.
However, because those restrictions didn’t apply to inner linings or undergarments, wealthy commoners and low-ranking samurai families still found creative ways to incorporate these colors into their clothing.
On a side note: This is a good article on how silly sumptuary regulations got during the Edo period. Things like roof beam length, gold leaf decoration on household goods, and clothing materials could get you arrested.
+ On the other end of the spectrum, garments dyed blue using indigo were always a safe choice for the masses, from the lower ranks of samurai to the very bottom rungs of Edo society.
Indigo was inexpensive and could be used to produce a large variety of blue shades which, combined with the right materials and patterns, decorations, or embroideries could make up garments from the cheapest everyday kimono of a farmer to the fine silks of a wealthy merchant’s wife.
But, your choice of textiles could also easily oust you as a country bumpkin in the big city. Reportedly, even Edo’s teahouse girls laughed at samurai whose haori were lined in the cheap blue fabrics. (If I find the source again, there was an insult along the line of “blue sleeves”, but I don’t want to misquote it.)
+ There are no powered looms to produce textiles until after the Meiji restoration. The first powered looms are introduced to Japan in the 1870s but do not come into widespread use until the 1910s.
+ There is no domestic wool production during the Edo period: wool fabrics had to be imported, which made them expensive and rarely used. However, there is some wool use during the Edo period, specifically in samurai’s fire costumes (火事装束, kaji shozuku), obviously for practical reasons since wool is not as flammable as cotton or silk, and in travel cloaks. Wool becomes more common with the Meiji restoration, first to make Western-style uniforms and later to produce general Western-style clothing for those who could afford it.
(How did you stay warm and dry? Padded kimono (not unlike its modern cousin, the hanten jacket) and kamiko (paper fabrics). Here’s a neat article on kamiko. 44 notes - Posted May 26, 2022

Real confession - the dentist is the embodiment of psychological damage. Not their fault, here are my reasons:
Fear of judgement - being raised poor means I only saw a dentist if something was broken beyond tolerance. Walking in the door gave intense feelings that I’d already let everyone down. BUT! My childhood did not encourage good oral hygiene, genetics are real (I’m looking at you, British Isles heritage!), my early adult depression included a lack of self care that I still pay for, I’m currently doing my best, and finally, I am taking better care of my mouth now than ever before. That last line I repeat to myself every time I visit.
This is going to cost lots of money I don’t have. Dental insurance (in the U.S.) is a joke, even if you have it. As a kid, fixing my teeth required my parents to ask grandma for money - what a burden to know before 10 years old, that you simply cost too much. As an adult, spending money on me is out of the question, even if I DO deserve to be cared for. Semi solution - get quotes in advance to avoid sticker shock in the chair.
This is going to hurt, physically. A LOT. Fun fact I learned as an adult, the gene that causes red hair (yes, even red highlights) can impact both how you feel pain and the effectiveness of common dental pain killers. Did you know there’s a legal limit to how much Novocain (and related drugs) can be given? After a white-knuckle, streaming-tears tooth extraction, I started doing research. Anesthesia costs even more money, and often is not covered by that insurance. This year, at #*!? years old, I learned good ole laughing gas can be paired with the ‘cain family of drugs for a fraction of the cost. Literally $135 dollars where I live. Now, that’s not cheap, and I have to budget it, but it’s a manageable dollar amount at this stage in my life. Plus, I now do have insurance, even halfway decent insurance. A major bonus!
Do not live with broken teeth for 7 years before seeing someone. I did, in fact, get an infection that nearly sent me to the hospital. One I’m still recovering from.
Many communities offer lower cost/free medical clinics with a visiting dentist. Many areas have a 1-2 day free event each year with dental volunteers. Many dental schools offer low cost/free services while the new dentists learn. Many dentists offer payment plans or medical loan services. Find you a dentist, any dentist, and be upfront with your fears before you go. If that requires an email before you go, do it, even in a clinic.
You, yes YOU, deserve to be cared for. Poor dental heath can impact your heart and other organs - and you don’t have money or time for that, either!

Medical Fit outs: Creating Optimal Healthcare Environments
Medical fit outs are the design and construction of healthcare facilities that are tailored to meet the specific needs of medical professionals and their patients. These fitouts encompass a wide range of spaces, from small medical offices to large hospitals. The goal of a well-executed medical fitout is to create an environment that is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing and conducive to healing.
Key Considerations for Medical Fitouts
Several key factors must be considered when planning and executing a medical fitout:
Compliance and Regulations:
Adherence to building codes and health regulations is paramount.
Compliance with infection control standards, such as those set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is essential.
Accessibility standards must be met to ensure that the facility is accessible to people with disabilities.
Functionality and Efficiency:
The layout of the space should be designed to optimize workflow and minimize patient wait times.
Adequate storage space for medical equipment and supplies is crucial.
Ergonomics should be considered in the design of workstations and examination rooms to reduce strain on healthcare professionals.
Aesthetics and Patient Experience:
A calming and welcoming atmosphere can positively impact patient well-being.
The use of color, lighting, and natural elements can contribute to a pleasant environment.
Patient privacy should be prioritized in the design of waiting areas and examination rooms.
Technology Integration:
Modern medical practices rely heavily on technology.
The fitout should accommodate the integration of medical equipment and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
Adequate wiring and data connectivity are essential for efficient operations.
Types of Medical Fitouts
Medical fit outs can be tailored to various healthcare settings, including:
Medical Offices: Small-scale fitouts for general practitioners, specialists, and other healthcare providers.
Dental Clinics: Specialized fitouts for dental procedures, including examination rooms, sterilization areas, and waiting rooms.
Veterinary Clinics: Fitouts designed to accommodate animals, with specific requirements for hygiene and safety.
Hospitals and Clinics: Large-scale fitouts for inpatient and outpatient care, including operating rooms, emergency departments, and intensive care units.
The Importance of Professional Expertise
Medical fit outs require specialized knowledge and expertise. Engaging a professional design and construction firm experienced in healthcare projects is crucial to ensure a successful outcome. These professionals can help navigate complex regulations, optimize space utilization, and create a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment.
By carefully considering these factors and working with experienced professionals, healthcare facilities can achieve medical fit outs that enhance patient care and staff efficiency.

Hi I work for my state's 211 service. It really breaks my heart how many people only know to call us at the last minute. 211's can provide a whole wealth of resources to use before things ever get to a cut off utility, eviction, or homelessness!
I can't speak for all 211's but most should also have a website detailing all the agencies in their database. if you don't like phone calls, this can be something to reference instead.
If you don't have health insurance but you need to see a doctor, reference 211! We list clinics that provide free or discounted general care, vision, and dental services to low income households and people without insurance! Many hospitals also have financial aid policies that can severely reduce your bill if you had an expensive procedure!
If you're stuck in a dead end job or need educational resources reference 211! There are a lot of programs focused on providing basic adult education as well as trade skills or other high demand fields! State governments are generally more interested in funneling people into work than providing benefits, but you can still use this to your advantage especially if you have some form of disability but are still able to work. That includes if you're neurodiverse or have mental health issues! Most of these programs are extremely underutilized.
If you believe you qualify for public benefits but the bureaucracy of the process is in your way, reference 211! There are agencies specifically geared towards helping people obtain the benefits they qualify for- for free!
If you need help with your taxes-
If you need help finding a pro bono lawyer-
If you need help finding affordable housing/section 8 housing-
If you need help finding food pantries-
If you need help paying for your prescriptions-
If you need help obtaining disability aids or assistive technology-
If you need help finding transportation options-
If you need help following a natural or personal disaster (like a home fire)-
If you need help repairing a home you or your family owns or it needs modifications to be accessible-
If you need Queer resources-
Reference your 211!!!!!
I had no idea what 211 was before working for it but I wish I had. I've learned so much about what resources are actually available to the community even in a ho hum area of the country like my state. I've saved my partner literally thousands of dollars just from the medical resources I've gathered.
Not enough young people know about or utilize these services but they are there for you!
P. S.
This isn't an intended use of 211, but I like to reference the agency listings when I look for jobs. Many of the agencies listed are non-profits which, while they certainly are not perfect, generally have lower barriers of entry to decent paying jobs with benefits. The work environments tend to be much kinder and at least pretend to be forward thinking. You're more likely to find jobs without as many people applying as well, especially if they're only advertising their positions through their own website.
If you live in the USA and you're pleading for donations to pay your rent, bills, or get food then dial 211! Please dial 211 before the last minute!
It's a toll free service with people who will help you find programs in your community to pay those bills, find food, and find housing! They will give you numbers to call so you can get help.
It is not 100% foolproof. Their job is to direct you to a program they believe will help your current issue, but it's still a step up from praying random strangers online will give you enough cash before a deadline! The added benefit of these community programs, which get funded by the local government most of the time, is if there are more people using them then they can get more money to help more people.
You're not taking resources from other people if you use your community services. Your taxes pay for them. Use them.
Dial 211 first to see if they can help, and if for some reason they can't, then make your donation posts!

CBCT Scan Price: A Guide to Costs and Value for Dental Imaging
When it arrives to understanding the CBCT scan price, it's essential to recognize the value it gets to existing dental and medical diagnostics. A CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan is a fully developed imaging technique that delivers detailed 3D pictures of teeth, bones, nerves, and soft tissues, causing it an important tool for dental professionals. Whether you're designing a dental implant, about jaw problems, or analyzing other oral health issues, a CBCT scan is often the go-to choice.
Elements Affecting CBCT Scan Costs
Several factors can affect the price of a CBCT scan:
Location: The price of CBCT scans varies widely established on geographical area. Clinics in metropolitan areas often demand more than those in rural locations due to overhead expenses.
Clinic Type: Professional dental clinics or hospitals equipped with advanced CBCT machines may charge a premium for their services.
Scan Area: A full-mouth CBCT scan will typically cost more than a limited scan focusing on a specific area.
Technology Used: Everyday CBCT machines with higher resolution and state-of-the-art imaging abilities can also influence the pricing.
Average Price Range
In most cases, the CBCT scan price ranges between $150 and $500, depending on the factors noted above. Limited scans focusing on a specific area are on the lower end of the spectrum, while full-mouth scans tend to be more costly. However, dental insurance or clinic advertisements may help lower out-of-pocket costs.
Is the Investment Worth It?
Absolutely! The precision of CBCT imaging ensures accurate diagnoses and tailored therapy plans. For patients undergoing procedures like implants, orthodontics, or root canal therapies, the transparency delivered by CBCT scans can greatly improve results.
In conclusion
while the CBCT scan price might seem like a considerable investment initially, its value in ensuring effective and even dental care causes it a worthwhile expenditure. Be sure to discuss options and costs with your dental professional to find the best solution for your needs
