This relationship did not age well - Track 7
Disclaimer: I have been gone for a solid year and I’m sorry, life has been happening a lot. I don’t know how regularly I can post but I will attempt my best :) Thank you all for your patience.
Theories on how the albums might or might not be connected could be endless but for now I don’t want to focus on the whole albums, I want to look at three songs in particular, track 7 on each album.
The songs we will be looking at today are Give - Alkaline - Are You Really Okay?.
Now what do these songs have in common? All of them discuss an aspect of love. I personally like to believe that those songs show us a relationship slowly developing over time. Let me explain. In Give, we see a very spiritual and passionate approach to love. It’s like the speaker wishes to become one with their love interest, they want to protect them from all evil and exist with them in a space where nothing could harm them or their love.
“Give me all that you can give, all your darkest impulses”, someone is very sure that nothing could break this relationship, not even their deepest darkest secrets. This seems very classic for a new relationship, for the first few weeks or months your love feels immortal and even your partner’s flaws and problems cannot destroy their perfect image.
Now in Alkaline it gets…horny (no academic way to say this really). The fact that this song discusses a physical connection rather than the spiritual “love of my life” thing we have seen in Give suggests that this relationship has settled by now, they have arrived in their everyday life.
“Not quite either day or night, she’s perfectly misaligned.”
Our speaker is still very much in love with their love interest but we have managed to acknowledge that there are flaws.
“I see in a different light, the object of my desire.” Thank you Vessel, could not have said it better myself.
With Are You Really Okay it gets a lot darker. Now it is no longer a few little flaws and imperfection, this relationship is in a crisis.
“I could see it in you even then. And don’t you know I was trying to hold back the darkness.”
The speaker still tries to see the perfect human being they once fell in love with but it is getting harder, whatever struggle they are going through is overshadowing the positive moments.
“I cannot fix your wounds this time.” Good time to circle back to Give when he said “I will be watching for your enemies to let them know that they contend with me.” The speaker has tried it all to help their partner and protect them from their problems but they have failed. All they can do now is begging them to not inflict harm upon themselves again.
Now this is not a very uplifting ending of course, I am secretly hoping that track 7 on whatever they release next will match this theory but for now we are stuck on relationship crisis mode. I might be looking at another trinity of tracks because this was fun so if you have a lucky number or something lmk :)

so i was looking at the tmbte artwork and i noticed that ‘are you really okay?’ seems to be a mother?
Tumblr media
like she’s pregnant (??) , cradling a baby in a mechanism connected to her stomach like an umbilical cord, so i wonder if the song is more of a parent talking to their child (especially the first line) instead of someone talked to a lost loved one (like common theory is that it’s abt the eden character). because, tw, i’ve been that kid, having to wake my mum up at night because i’m dying at my own hands, and the lyrics seem to fit that situation pretty fucking well lmao. but idk, again maybe i’m looking for symbolism that isn’t there, or maybe you guys figured this out months ago and i’m late to the game. what do you guys think?

The song of the day is
Sleep Token - Are You Really Okay?
Trigger warning for lyrics: Self Harm
youtube
When this album came out and I looked at the track list, this one scared me. Not because I thought it would be bad (could you imagine sleep token releasing a bad song) but because I knew it was gonna be sad.
And God damnit was I right in being afraid of it cause holy shit this song is ROUGH.
Tumblr media
My first listen, this broke me, and honestly, it still does sometimes. This is my only "skip" on the album, not because I dislike it, but because if I'm feeling down that day, this song WILL make me cry.

okay i have more to say about are you really okay?
it hits so hard and cuts so deep because it’s straightforward lyrically
every other song is full of allegory and this beautiful, poetic imagery. everything he says comes through but it’s said in ways that are not overt
are you really okay? doesn’t follow that pattern. there is no allegory, there is no masking what that song is. and that is why it’s so emotional to me. it’s raw and bare and sad and desperate and it hurts so good
