Hello to any x files fans out there, I think I am finally ready to start my season 8 journey. Had to pause because I knew what was coming and as someone that was freshly experiencing grief about a year ago, I could not bring myself to continue… 

But!!! After a year of religiously consuming fanfic and reading many many msr/x files think pieces (shout out to @randomfoggytiger @thursdayinspace & @deathsbestgirl, I love scrolling your blogs & reading all of your thoughts!!) and also living vicariously through juni’s (mulders-too-large-shirt, not gonna tag her in case this is spoils something about s8) live blogging, I think I am finally ready to jump back in. 

I am so looking forward to the episodes I haven’t watched (despite already being irked with some plot lines), but I do like to watch source material for myself!! And the x files is truly some source material!!

For a show that was written in the 90s, the way I am sooooo drawn to Scully as a complex,well-rounded female character that I think even the more modern shows sometimes fail to fully capture. Because she’s just so complex and layered and multi dimensional in a way that I relate to and in the way that I see so many of the women in my own life. 

The way Scully is determined and strong and wants to be a boss-ass bitch, but is still sooo kind and empathetic and soft and girly (even though I think she wouldn’t really like to be associated with that term). 

Ugh, just ugh!!! As someone who also constantly struggles with wanting to be feminine and also wanting to be taken seriously!! I get it!! I get her!!! And gillian played this really well imo. There is so much depth to the way scully is portrayed even in times of shitty writing or less than compelling plot points. I have never been so drawn into a female character the way I have with her! 

And Mulder, my beloved. Definitely one of my all-time favourite male characters. He really is very kind and always willing to empathize with the victim. And the way he carries everything that happened with samantha and wraps it in layers and layers of dumb-ass humour, collapsing into his work and falling into his need to save everyone and everything around him. 

What I really like is how he is sooo determined to make the world better in the ways he knows how. And god, the way he claims the need to not trust anyone and be suspicious and question everything but never actually does that at some critical moments!! Because he so badly wants to believe in the goodness of people and wants to believe that he is worth the help, that they see what he’s fighting for and are willing to fight that fight. I want to scream about this so often. There is so much beauty in the subtle vulnerabilities of Mulder’s character and the way that he carries all that!! Again shout out to david for really playing to that in how he acts as Mulder. 

And then you put these two complex, flawed, unhinged individuals together and I have never known peace since!!! In the absolute best way. I have to say in the 15 years of being involved in a whole range of fandoms, I have never been quite as taken with a ship as I have been with msr. The way they fall into each other truly has me clutching at my heart. 

Because it really really is a meeting of minds and values and essences and an inherent understanding of what it means to exist in this world. They both have their own journey with that last one, but I think the way they move through that journey is soooo complementary to each other and that they could have only undertaken that journey once they met.

Do you think GTOP was just for the fan service?

Oh, what an interesting question. I shall try my best to answer this as completely as possible, so bear with me. Not sure if you want a speech (lol) but I am a certified chatterbox (and have a tinfoil hat.. that I shall be keeping at home.. unless you want me to whip it out). Lowkey wish I could just dm this cuz I am gonna take my time and be very messy plus can't easily SHOW you everything, especially because I have reblogged about a THOUSAND different (and sometimes same cuz some posts are just iconic like that) posts about gtop's relationship, have receipts that I and my fellow gtoppers haven't posted on Tumblr (I think, I mean I haven't) and am stupid so I didn't use tags. Feel free to ask more specific questions! IDK if I should mention which blog inspired my GTOP journey the most, since they aren't active, but if you know me personally you know how much I love that blog. Even tho this person is asking why they're not fanservice rather than why they're dating: if you ship them platonically and are NOT looking for evidence to change your mind, move along.. Unless that was your question, anon, in which case I am sorry for misinterpreting. Lez go :)).

I really, really, REALLY don't want to bring this up, but since Tumblr feels like a safe space for rpf without having consequences on the daily lives of the individuals and your question concerns fanservice.. so.. here's a special Mnet made about GTOP that was most likely released on December 11, 2012 and was shown on NATIONAL TV. Neither did they know that when they were at the airport and TOP pulled GD to sit down next to him. GTOP isn't the only pairing they did, but it was the only pairing they used such personal moments and evidence for. It feels like an expose, even tho this isn't even 1% of the GTOP evidence we had atp. A LOT of things happened after this was released, and some need a tinfoil hat. But I shall be saying all basic observations and obvious things: -Jiko rumors, which Seunghyun himself was so ready to disprove, suddenly popped up and popped OFF. GD's old strategy of denying it like his life depended on it was gone and he instead was more.. coy? And no, this isn't because he started dating Kiko, at least in the beginning of 2012 he wasn't involved with her (after that point I can see potential) and in fact the Jiko relationship is FAR from this long term important relationship in GD's life (for which I could write a second speech). -GTOP died. Suddenly. Like someone had shot them down. From 2012-2014 people even thought they weren't friends anymore, but that is wrong because we have more than enough evidence to prove that they stayed close behind the cameras (despite the fact that there were two break ups in this period.. another speech can be held on that). And no, this isn't a normal response to being such a popular coupling. Other couples that were covered in the SAME special, (I believe 5 male x male, as they called it, couples were covered in this special) they went CRAZY when it came to fan service after their specials, because back in that era of kpop such fan service was the norm (and highly requested). And BB has done some insane fan service too.. but that insane fan service was NEVER GTOP.

Predebut GTOP and just debuted GTOP was very.. interesting. They did a lot of playful talking on Cyworld (totally how you'd text your crush.. from GD's side since we never got to see TOP's messages) and took a lot of selcas together. GD often playfully called Top “oppa” (which is a term girls use for an older brother/older male friend/or boyfriend). None of that is fan service, because this was before they truly had fans (although GD did have a few because he technically had debuted at age 12). GD would often say stuff like "Oh I'd date Taeyang if I was a girl" and he'd say it in the most DEADPAN way possible.. but once it comes to TOP he'd GUSH and get shy and describe his feelings and it's just so CUTE to hear him talk about TOP. But yeah, okay, let's ignore how obviously GD likes TOP.. There was even a radio show S*ungri was on (I pray to every God in the sky I reblogged it cuz I didn't appreciate it during my first listen and for that I will always be mad) and he said "Whenever I'm with GD, he'll start talking about TOP. He'd tell me, 'Ah, $*ungri, guess what TOP did today, he's so amusing, oh he's driving me insane', stuff like that." Now my question is; why would HE do GTOP fanservice? And this was in the early days, before he got involved in his shady dealings, his crimes, so he wasn't doing it to get brownie points and popularity, like he does later on. There are many fan accounts (one of them is VERY iconic and lives rent-free in my mind.. gosh when I find all those again.. here's one I saved cuz I loved it so damn much: https://web.archive.org/web/20240627183223/http://www.twitlonger.com/show/j8gci1) that report the two of them together without other members or friends, report GD playfully being "jealous" of others getting closer to TOP and/or report GD & TOP being so close that people believed they were dating because of how close they were (they weren't dating yet btw, just being flirty af). There are interesting stories about Nuthang (which is their friend circle). It was always commonly said that you saw GD with Top at night and Taeyang during the day. You only saw Top with GD, out of the members. Daesung was never seen much, other than at church or if he went out with the other members. Seungri was seen out partying, sometimes at the same place with GTOP but not necessarily with them. This was the consensus in the VIP fandom for the longest time, and people only started denying it later on. Unfortunately, a lot of GTOP stuff is no longer floating around, and K-VIPs also held a lot of stuff back from 2011-2012 onward, to 'protect' GD. There is one very clear instant of this protectiveness of GD, but that isn't your question soooooo.. ALSO NEVER FORGET THAT THEY MET IN MIDDLE SCHOOOOL.

Those subtle gestures in their body language, their laughs and smiles, their way of speaking to each other in such soft, caring, free and casual ways, and also, like, those ~obvious~ loving glances Jiyong has towards Seunghyun and Seunghyun's own ones for GD lmao. Just SOME, some of the moments I can recall of the top of my head, some of the things they do, like GD not shutting up about TOP in the Starcast call and not letting others speak to TOP during that call, the 2015 Welcoming Collection DVD, their entire body language and sneaky glaces during Night After Night (not to mention GD literally wearing the fur hat TOP gave him (GD confirmed this himself btw)), GD looking at Seunghyun, then looking at Seunghyun's lips, then looking at Seunghyun at their comeback special stage in 2015, their Insta behaviour and, ofc, the WAY he looked at TOP in 'Happy Together'.. these moments and their chemistry, their heavenly chemistry, is just too good and too disruptive to be fan service (only). There was a very VERY specific gtop moment of GD taking a selfie and TOP didn't know the camera was on while talking to GD (so he was just staring at him and said something lowkey flirty like "Are you shy?" lmao) and GD had to go all "The camera is on! :((" to chase TOP away, which is certified proof of them not being fan service but I CAN'T find itttt.

With GTOP, there are many times that the two of them were together that we’d never see. TOP is notorious for being present and just not appearing in any pictures, especially (and after awhile ONLY) when it came to GD. After all, there are at least a few instagram photos that GD has posted that Top didn’t appear in that were determined to be from a time he and GD were together. And it isn't like GD wants to not share pictures of his friends, he was very freely sharing pictures he has with everyone except TOP. There are a handful of examples I can think of where TOP was just out of sight? Ofc those are just the times we were lucky enough to realize. If they were all about fanservice, wouldn't they post selcas about hanging out, like TOP did with Daesung, the person he did most of his fan service with?

THEIR COUPLE WEAR AND OTHER INSTA BEHAVIOUR FROM THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREERS. I WISH I WAS KIDDING WHEN I SAY IT IS INSANE. INSANE. Not even gonna TRY and summerize, GD is obsessed with matching Seunghyun. There is no reason for them to do that for fan service. I just can't see it.

This post gets a little rant-y and I mention some topics that some people might consider political, so TW for that. The beginning part is just a bit of a blog/personal update, though, so if you're interested in that (or you think PAL from the Mitchells vs the Machines deserved better) this post is for you.

Also, keep in mind that I am not a radical of any kind. My political beliefs are *very* mild and palatable. I'm not a 'centrist' either and my beliefs are generally considered leftist. I didn't like calling myself a leftist because I thought being a leftist meant you had to actually know stuff about politics or be an activist or something, which I don't and am not.

GLaDOS is my only she/her muse on this blog. I wrote some Giffany once, but it was sorta bland. even still, I like Giffany. I just don't think that particular post was all that inspired.

I also like PAL from The Mitchells vs The Machines. I've seen a lot of people treat her like she's irredeemably evil, when she's actually just mad that the only person who she ever loved or trusted considered her to be disposable. On this blog, we support going full supervillan over something like that. It's like, one of our main principles, I think.

Anyway, at first I was thinking "Hmm, telling people I want to add more women, girls, and she/hers from movies I've seen just because I don't think there are enough women, girls, and she/hers in my roster isn't a good enough reason" and then I realized "oh wait, yes it is.

I might just use one of my old asks/requests (because the people in my asks and requests have said some really nice stuff that I really appreciate, even though I've been kinda burnt out on writing fic content lately), and I know it's probably a bit greedy, but if anyone wants to send an ask specifically for the women, girls, ladies, and she/hers in the roster, I'd really appreciate it. If not, I'll use one of the asks I've been hoarding or make something up.

Also, I keep seeing names in my notes (and I'm not naming anyone specific) but I keep seeing people in my notes with usernames like "Butch lesbian: Lover, defender, enthusiast and Appreciater of women, girls, ladies, gals, and dudettes in art, fiction, and real life" and I'm here like "Damn. Women are cool as hell and my blog is basically a desert of content regarding them." And I know lesbians can and do enjoy content about men, and some lesbians even self-ship with fictional characters of the dudefella variety, and there's also the possibility that a butch lesbian likes GLaDOS from Portal and only GLaDOS from Portal, and I just feel like I'm starving them of content.

Also, I don't consider myself a political person, and I don't consider my blog to be political, but like, I'm constantly reminded that things like "media that markets itself as 'for everyone' shouldn't assume that the reader is comfortable being assumed to be cis/white/perisex/able-bodied/etc" "Comfort, access to necessities, basic dignity, and respect are human rights" "Maybe tearing apart families and killing innocent people for no reason or for a reason that is way dumber and less important than human life and dignity is a bad thing, actually" and "doing half an hour of research on a condition/variant/identity that one doesn't possess isn't that hard, is pretty fun, and is generally probably a good thing if you're going to write about it" are often considered radical beliefs? Like what? I'm literally not that smart or educated. These are NOT difficult conclusions.

I don't even think this is the type of thing you would normally get Asks about, but at this point I genuinely can't think of anyone better to come to and ask for their opinion.

I don't know if any of your followers have seen this situation as it's been occurring, but this massively popular mobile game that's been blowing up recently (called Love and Deep Space) has incurred a lot of drama and discourse as of a few days ago.

So LADS is an otome game, with a visibly femme/female protagonist who romances the male love interests. And a few days ago, the dev team behind LADS introduced this rule to all of their official groups and servers like Facebook and Discord: "Absolutely no BL materials are allowed to be posted or discussed in official spaces"

So, naturally, quite a few people are upset about what is basically a "no gays allowed" rule being forced onto the fandom. Because the "no BL" rules includes the posting of ANY queer content with "official" #LADS tags. Which for platforms like Twitter is absolutely unreasonable. They're stating that fanart of M/M ships can't be posted with any tags for the source material? It's ridiculous.

There's been people trying to defend it, saying things like "oh it's because of CN censorship laws" despite the fact that LADS isn't a CN game and the company isn't a CN company. Or "they only banned queer stuff in their official Discord and official Facebook group and for the official LADS tags on socmed!" even though that is still censorship and erasure of queer content (and somehow the fact that it's officially sanctioned makes it okay?)

But the worst part is the fact that there’s been an EXPLOSION of aggressive homophobia within the fanbase. It's as if all the cishet women who play the game were just waiting for their chance to go mask off, because the second those "no BL" rules were put in place the rampant harrassment and bullying started. People are getting attacked for M/M ship fanart, people are getting attacked for having male self-inserts or male MC or OC designs, and several artists have already been harrassed into deleting all of their artwork and leaving the fandom.

There's now a LOUD number of fans screeching that otome games "are only for girls" and that anyone even slightly queer or masc-leaning "doesn't belong in otome fandoms" and "needs to go play something else"

I've seen baseless accusations that "men want to force us to play as a gay male MC!" and "gay men are demanding that LADS turn the female MC male!" when absolutely no one anywhere has ever said anything close to that.

I have tried telling these fans that queer people, including queer men, have ALWAYS played otome games, that gay men and queer people have ALWAYS been a part of the otome community from the very beginning, but anyone who deviates even slightly from the new majority of "no gay shit allowed, otome is for straight women only and everyone else kys" gets immediately shouted down and harrassed/attacked. I know a lot of people have deleted the game and have stopped playing because of both the official "no gays" rule and also the extremely toxic and homophobic fanbase.

I was wondering if you knew about any resources (blogs, articles, anything) talking about the history of queer people playing otome/dating sim games, or even if you happen to know anything anecdotal about it yourself. Because we've ALWAYS been here, otome games have never been JUST for cishet women. I'm also just wondering what your/your followers' thoughts are about this whole mess in general.

Oof. I don't play many games of that sort, so I don't know a ton about their history, but there has often been pointless beef between the more self inserty types and the more m/m shipping types.

I don't think you need evidence that people besides cishet women consume media X. It should be self-evident from being a human who lives in the world. These people are denying it because they don't want it to be true, not because they do or don't have evidence.

So, um, hi. This is my first post on Rotomblr.

My name is Lucil, Lucil Harbinger. Yeah, I know, it's a really dumb name. Anyway, I’m a trainer registered from Unova. I’m currently trying to start my trainer journey in Kanto. Um, I'm 16 years old, my preferred pronouns are They/Them (but any pronoun is fine), and I think that’s it.

I’m not coming from a place of hate at all, I enjoy your takes on Berserk homoeroticism and appreciate your refreshing ability to make well informed, intellectual analysis so accessible for other fans. It is an important resource to have when dudebros try to make their homophobic bias sound like good arguments. However, when it comes to your analysis of Casca, I find myself disagreeing with almost everything you say. I’m usually only reading your blog quietly because I enjoy the discourse, but I feel like I need to add my two cents. I agree that Cascas writing falls flat to a degree, but I can’t help but think that you’re downplaying her character and arc because you don’t enjoy the parts of Berserk that aren’t about homoerotic tension between Guts and Griffith. Their homoerotic tension is also what is most interesting to me, but it’s not what Berserk is inherently about. We could dismiss Casca by saying ˋMiura can’t write women´, but then again characters like Farnese exist who have an entire complex thematic arc tied to religious extremism, authoritarian character and freeing herself from dogmatism and Berserk as a story is not punishing her or asking for redemption and is instead inherently ridding itself from moralizing judgements of characters. She’s allowed to evolve by herself. As a queer person, I see myself in her. Theres so much queerness and comphet in her story, I’m sad that there’s not many meta posts about her on here. Does Berserk have ideological streaks of conservatism and misunderstands women because Miura has a misogynistic bias? Yeah, unfortunately. But the story and many of the main characters are too complex and ambiguous for me to write them all off based on how some of their arcs are not feminist enough and could need improving. Imagine writing such a complicated and long story with so many characters as just one simple Japanese dude who never leaves his house and who was born in the 70s or whatever. Like, I get separating the story from the author and impact versus intent, but dismissing Casca because of her flaws in writing is dismissing all of Berserk because of some thematic flaws. It sounds like you’re expecting the perfect story for her to be a valid female character and that’s just not possible. I for once made peace with her flaws and am not rejecting her. I think Cascas story works for what it is and I empathize with her as someone who has experienced misogyny and SA. Farny and Schierke working through her trauma magically was a nice metaphor for solidarity between women and it’s rare to see that coming from a male author, I don’t think it’s less valid just because Miura has some gender bias. Casca still experiencing PTSD afterwards is also realistic and shows that Miura is willing to give Casca enough agency to work through that by herself without magic some time in the future of the story. Her story is uncomfortable and her character arc is long and flawed, but that’s what makes it impossible for me to dismiss her. I’m a bit disappointed that so many fans on the tumblr side are willing to basically rid Griffith from all his wrongdoings but then empathize the flaws in Casca and don’t understand that maybe they also have some internalized misogyny that doesn’t make them understand that bias. Especially with the argument that I often see with She Should Have Died. Why? Because she’s uncomfortable? Maybe explore that within yourself. Other than that I am happy to have this queer part of the fandom where we don’t judge each other for liking Griffith and enjoying GriffGuts as a ship. And I hope that you don’t think too harshly of my criticism, for it is only to improve our fandom discourse culture and not to throw stones. Thank you for existing!

Okay look, while I do appreciate the appreciation for my non-casca blog content, I can't look past this coming hand in hand with a lot of pretty insulting, and frankly baseless assumptions about my motives. I'm glad you're not coming from a place of hate, but from the sounds of it you're coming from a place of presumptive judgement, and I want to address that.

I've always been very direct and clear about how I don't think someone's tastes or opinions about a story reflect on them personally. I don't judge someone's character by their fictional interests, I judge it by their words and actions.

If you're going to be interacting with my blog, I'd appreciate being extended the same benefit of the doubt.

You seem to see someone who doesn't enjoy Casca's storyline and make assumptions about why, rather than taking the reasons I provide at face value. I have explained why, very thoroughly, quite often, and quite recently, while constantly referring back to the text and to Miura's comments to justify my conclusions. I literally don't know how I can possibly be more direct about how I am discussing the narrative of a story on its own terms without going full dry academic language lol, come on.

I like to think I'm also very clear about when I'm expressing my subjective opinion (eg i dislike het romance; I'm super into romantic betrayal as a trope, etc) vs when I'm analysing the story based on direct textual evidence (eg casca has no active involvement in the narrative post-eclipse; casca's sexual abuse is eroticized; etc). I certainly try to be. And frankly it is genuinely pretty insulting that you think I'm incapable of judging Casca's story on its own merits or lackthereof, and must be over-emphasizing the flaws of her narrative because I only care about griffguts.

The truth is I genuinely believe that Griffith and Guts' relationship is the thematic core of Berserk, based on the text of the story, and I also genuinely believe Casca's storyline sucks ass in most ways. And it's okay to disagree with one or both of those takes, but yeah I'm gonna take a little bit of offense at the insinuation that I'm too biased by shipping or misogyny or both to analyse the story.

If you love Casca's story despite its flaws, good for you. I'm happy for you. I have no desire to argue with you to make you change your mind. And I don't think it makes you misogynist or ableist or racist, even though I think Casca's storyline contains all of the above to some degree - but if I was going to respond to you in the same vein that you've responded to me, that would be fair game as an assumption. It would also be fair game to assume that you only like Casca and are dismissive of or blind to many of the story's faults because you're projecting or you ship gtsca or you think good feminism is all about stanning certain designated fictional characters regardless of their actual depiction. And I think that is something wrong with fandom culture. I think those are all shitty assumptions to make about someone based on which fictional characters they enjoy reading about most. So like, straight up, you're the only one throwing stones here.

So I want to ask you: why is it that someone discussing offensive fictional tropes makes you assume they are the real misogynist? Why are you equating criticism of writing with criticism of real women, as though media trends and narrative framing don't exist? Why do you think it even matters if I "reject" a fictional character because I don't like how she's written lol?

This strikes me as the same line of thinking that leads to shutting down all criticism of misogyny in media - how dare you say this outfit is unrealistic for a martial artist, some women like to wear high heels! How dare you criticize the average husband/model-esque wife trope, some beautiful women love their average husbands! How dare you criticize comics for fridging the girlfriends of superheroes, women sometimes suffer horrible fates in real life! How dare you criticize the born sexy yesterday trope, some women are naive! etc etc etc.

And this is why it's important to have at least some understanding of narrative framing and greater media trends when discussing media on any level beyond headcanon and projection. Casca isn't real, and as a construct she is not a sensitive or realistic depiction of a traumatized woman, regardless of whether someone identifies with her. She's not a sensitive or realistic depiction of a disabled women either. There are literally "funny" cartoonish background gags involving her shoving random things into her mouth. She gets sexy fanservice while regressed to the mentality of a toddler. She is sexually assaulted by and then shipteased with the protagonist. I could go on all day lol, lbr here. I should not be obligated to brush all that aside and pretend it doesn't irritate me and sometimes offend me in order to valorize a woman who doesn't like, yk, exist.

You and anyone else are free to project on her and relate to her and sympathize with her and love her, and I think that's great and what fandom is all about, but that still doesn't make her writing strong. And I think it's worth discussing how and why her writing fails, the same way it's worth discussing any other flaw of Berserk, like Guts' character flattening with the Eclipse, or Farnese's sudden personality 180, or the awkward pacing, or the prominent scary black man trope, etc, all of which I've also discussed plenty. If you feel like I've disproportionately focused on Casca criticism, then there are 2 reasons for that: 1. I respond to asks 99% of the time, so it's what the people are asking about. 2. Casca's storyline is the most prominent bad and offensive writing in the story, like it's the number one thing that's likely to drive new potential fans away, so of course people are going to want to talk about it.

Also I've written like, a lot of meta and speculation and headcanons etc about Casca beyond criticism of her narrative lol, so if you're sad about the lack of discussion and meta about her it's ironic that you're coming to me with that complaint. Be the change you want to see in the world, start your own Casca centric blog if you want more meta about her to exist, or read more of what already exists. I'd say I'm doing my part as far as I'm concerned lol, but I don't like the way that phrasing implies that anyone has an obligation to focus their interest on any particular fictional character.

I'm glad you enjoy other aspects of my blog, and if you stick around after this admittedly irritable response I hope you continue enjoying them. But if you feel the need to engage with me to defend a fictional character from my criticism again in the future, I'd appreciate it if you engaged with that criticism directly and analytically, rather than speculating about my character and motives.

Content preferences between femslash versus m/m? For example, I like some kinks or tropes better with femslash than with m/m. How do you think the fic being sapphic effects how you write characters? Only asking you bc we're friends. I wouldn't send something like this to just anyone 😭

Oh I am definitely significantly less picky when it comes to femslash. There are many tropes, kinks, various AUs, etc that I would never read as m/m (or potentially m/f but I’m a bit more flexible on that), but if it’s about femslash, I can get into it.

I think this was originally born of there being just so much less femslash, so I wasn’t given the luxury of being as picky about what I would read for my femslash ships in comparison to m/m, or again, even m/f. But now I think it’s because I just genuinely am more interested in women and/or sapphics in various situations, dynamics, tropes than I am male characters.

(Which, the reason why I tend to be even more lenient with m/f than m/m, because there is still a female character involved. That being said, I can’t do cishet f/m. I need there to be some type of gender and/or sexuality fuckery going on or it feels… well, I just don’t like it, and I am much more picky with the dynamics between characters, esp power dynamics, as the female character being depicted as being beneath the male character (ESPECIALLY when this is one of the main selling points) it makes me viscerally uncomfortable. So I stay away from it.)

Anyways, m/f tangent aside, but think the reason I’m so much more willing to explore and try out things I normally wouldn’t with femslash is because there is a degree of relatability there that m/m just doesn’t have. There is also some piece of me that I cannot articulate well for the life of me, but I just truly find more female characters genuinely interesting in comparison to male characters. There are a small handful of male characters and m/m ships that I think about often (Akaza, Kyojuro, Sanemi, Shigaraki, Dabi, Sukuna, and Yuuji, that’s about it), but there are genuinely so many female characters I would be interested in reading about and that I obsessively think about. I couldn’t even list them all. And that of course opens up the possibility of many more ships as well. So naturally I’m going to be interested in more types of femslash content, because there’s already such a broad stroke of female characters I’m interested in. That opens many more avenues

“But Kaz” you say “you don’t seem to personally post about female characters as much” and that is… true. Despite my blog being VERY sapphic centric, it’s mostly reblogs, I don’t share my femslash thoughts nearly as much. There’s a few reasons for that. One, is that I used to and they never got nearly the engagement my m/m posting did, so I gave up. The other is I know most people who follow me came from my renkaza fics, not any of my femslash. So I cater to them. This is something I’m trying to rectify now, because I do genuinely want to share so many of my thoughts and ideas and fics about female characters, it’s just… I always circle back to my m/m ALWAYS garnering more attention. It makes me frustrated, so ultimately I often to just keep it to myself and enjoy it so I don’t get irritated by the fact that it’s ignored in favor of my m/m content. But again, this is something I’m trying to change and I’m slowly shifting back to doing a lot more femslash, which is why so many femslash fics have gone up recently

As for kinks/smut, being so honest, I hardly read m/m smut HAHA. I will on occasion, but generally it’s only when it’s part of a long ongoing fic and isn’t the main focus of the fic. I almost NEVER read m/m smut one shots, and I ABSOLUTELY never read porn without plot m/m. Because I’m pretty much only interested in the relationship dynamics and character studies of male characters within smut. I don’t really get anything gratifying out of it, even if it’s about kinks I personally have and really like. This is also why any of the m/m smut I’ve written is… the way that it is LMAO

But for femslash, well, I feel this one’s obvious lol but I find women attractive. So I will read purely smut focused fics, and while I don’t PREFER pwp I’ll still read it sometimes, esp if it has a bunch of kinks I like, because I still get the gratifying feeling of it being about characters I find attractive. That’s also why I’m more likely to branch out with kinks I don’t have or don’t really engage with when it’s femslash, because again, I find these characters attractive. That might make the kink more interesting/likable. Like for some examples, I pretty much can only enjoy an age gap, bondage, breeding kink, cheating (specifically a female character cheating on a male character) as a couple examples of pretty common kinks/scenarios, when it’s femslash and almost def won’t read those things if it’s not femslash, unless there are other things within the fic that I AM really interested in.

As for my own writing of sapphic characters, I think the main difference is I tend to focus a lot more heavily and explicitly on the characters flaws or more negative aspects. Of course, I focus on this with male characters, that’s just good writing lol, but I put a lot more emphasis on it with female characters, and will often create fics specifically to explore their worst flaws

And the reason for that is I just got so, so tired of the vast majority of femslash being plotless fluff, as well as constantly seeing female characters reduced to the perfect yes queen girl boss slay thing that fandoms do. I want to explore the nitty gritty meat of them, and that often means more “negative” focus on them

(People see this a lot with Shinobu in my fics, but after I’ve said it, I’m sure people will realize I also do it with Tamayo and even Mitsuri)

And then again, there is that degree of relatability that’s just not quite there with male characters and m/m. I think it shines through the most with smut because it’s infinitely easier for me to focus on the actual physical actions happening and actually envisioning them as arousing, as well as it being easier to describe female characters’ bodies in more depth from the lens of being attractive.

But I’m sure it comes across in other more subtle ways too. Mostly related to femininity and masculinity, but probably other ways too

Anyways, this was really interesting trying to articulate! They were things I’d thought about before, but not necessarily tried to describe. But I hope that pretty solidly answers your questions!

I definitely would not have phrased the post you mentioned that way, but I understand the impulse behind it. It is frustrating on a societal and personal level to see men constantly prioritized over everyone else, including in terms of fandom energy and passion. This is of course a phenomenon that happens everywhere. Lecturing people about it in fandom isn't the way to solve it, but I do feel that there's some reflection that could be done over why one might find men more compelling and easier to 'fandomize'. Supporting women's sports etc often requires swimming against the stream.

ok, i'll bite. without digging into what you may mean by "more compelling and easier to 'fandomize'," i can say that the reason my personal hockey tumblr(s) are pretty male-centric is that i am here for fic and shipping. i like to process my own female perspective through the safe remove of a dude. i am here to make hockey players gay and/or girls, and put them in situations that i have entirely made up, and make them suffer and make them come and bestow queer happiness upon a bunch of made-up dudes whose real life counterparts would almost certainly call me a slur. when i reblog content of male hockey players, it is not because i like them as humans. it is because they are my tools and my playthings.

i have very little interest in doing that with female hockey players because i like actual female hockey players a lot. i like them as humans, not as a starting point to make shit up. i post photos of megan keller because i think she's adorable and endearing and crushworthy without me having to add anything to the package. i watch women's hockey and i play women's hockey in no small part because it is a very queer space, and i don't feel compelled to make shit up about female hockey players when a whole lot of them are already queer.

i can only speak for my blog, though. everybody else with a male-centric hockey tumblr probably has their own reasons, and they're all entitled to them. fandom is an escape, not an obligation.

a sideblog (I follow from @hotshotshitshow !) for me to indulge in fandom-based hyperfixations, post my art, and ramble on about headcanons! especially that last point!

a place that focuses on and celebrates primarily female (and nonbinary) characters! i make a point of not giving much time or energy to male characters or m/m ships. i may discuss a few here and there in passing, but they are not and never will be the focus of this blog.

very happy to swap and discuss headcanons! jamming with others about headcanons often is the highlight of my day. pokemon is the fandom i am the most comfortable doing this with by far and i am likely to not have much to say about other fandoms, unfortunately.
