Bottom’s Up
synopsis: the dreamies during a night of drinking somehow end up talking about their exes, revealing the different types of relationships and exes they have or had.
a/n: this has been long been in my drafts so Jisung was still a minor here, thus I didn’t give him any drinks lmao. Enjoy! btw, I’m still deciding if I should make Haechan’s backstory for this, or if the markHyuck one should do…
[10:37]
The boys have arrived, piling into Chenle’s condominium that was set up just to have their long awaited guys night. They planned this weeks prior, promising each other that after their finals they’d set aside time to drink away their thoughts and release any stress they have that built up.
By 10:50 bottles have been popped and cups have been poured, the boys sat in the balcony to feel the cool air of the city night.
“You guys really aren’t sharing?” Jisung watches as the older boys raise their glasses in celebration.
“You wait a few more months, sir,” Mark sets his glass down and pats the younger boy on the shoulder. Guy nights wouldn’t be complete without Jisung, even if he wasn’t allowed to drink yet. He never minded sitting in the living room, playing with Chenle’s console with Jaemin and then later on laughing at his older friends’ shenanigans once the alcohol hit them.
Renjun isn’t quite the drinker, but Haechan made him a bet and unfortunately, he lost. Being an art major wasn’t easy, he knew he had a few more things to finish before his semester ended but with that, Renjun drank to forget.
Besides his plates, he had nothing else to worry about. He’d been getting emails from companies waiting for him to graduate, a family happy to support him, but surprisingly, the boy lacked in the love department.
His previous relationships, only being flings and one night stands, none of them really ever stayed after the cuddles. Except… a particular someone.
On the opposite side of him sat Jeno, who was watching his friends in amusement. Now, Jeno has a high alcohol tolerance. Although he becomes chatty, and starts to excessively clean his surroundings, he takes care of his friends well. Usually he’s the one who tucks them into bed or prevents anything like drunk driving and some other stupid shit to happen.
Jeno the architectural major was the responsible friend in a night out. The single friend who starts playing the guitar to set the mood when 2am rolls in. And, the single friend with the broken heart, which hasn’t quite mended yet even after three years.
Haechan on the other hand, is a messy drunk but handles his alcohol well until the 2nd bottle. The boy has a lot going on in his mind, and was the first to initiate the plan to drink.
His phone rings, but Haechan dismisses it, tapping the red decline button and watching as the screen faded into black. Mark follows his eyes and hesitantly brings it up.
“Aren’t you going to talk to her?”
Haechan only shakes his head before taking another swig. Everyone knows well enough about Haechan and his girlfriend’s on and off relationship. They break up, make up, fight and the cycle repeats.
Mark’s adam’s apple bobs as he asks another question. “Why don’t you just break up? Y’know… for good?”
The boys around them seem to have noticed the tension that built up and had their eyes fixed on the pair.
“I don’t know, man,” Haechan is too drunk to think about Mark’s question. Too drunk to realize how Mark completely sold himself off to be in love with him with that one question. It wasn’t a big secret, especially since Mark has done a poor job in hiding it, but apparently not bad enough for Haechan to see. Everyone knew, except for the clueless boy.
Jaemin was too busy babysitting Chenle, who was having his first drink tonight, to even have shots of his own. He didn’t like drinking, anyway, and used Chenle as an excuse to keep sober.
Jaemin the medical student naturally tells his friends to lay off the alcohol, as it can damage their liver. He can only do so much though, as the others tend to be hard-headed and stubborn.
“I can handle myself!” Chenle protests, reaching for his glass which Jaemin took away. “You’re supposed to drink, eat a lot then drink again,” Jaemin explains. “You’ve only taken drinks so far, you’ll be knocked out in an hour if you keep this up,” He tells Chenle.
Of course, Jaemin knew his way around drinking. He just didn’t enjoy it, doesn’t like the bitter taste of it. Didn’t like how it made him think of his past either. Jaemin’s cup remains half full, and he uses this tactic to not get refills.
It keeps him away from his phone, sober enough to know better than to drunk text her. Even if her presence was all he yearned for at a night like this.
Jaemin x Reader – By My Side
[COMING SOON]
[12:03]
As the night gets deeper, so do the conversations between the close friends. Just like Jaemin predicted, Chenle had his head down on the table already, passed out.
“Jeno, you know what to do,” Jaemin nodded his head, signaling the boy beside him. Jeno gave him his smile, which now looked more drowsy and silly because of his tipsy state.
Jeno lifts Chenle easily, with Jaemin assisting him, leaving the three boys on the table.
“I want ____. Where is she?” Chenle had his eyes closed, mumbling to his friends. Jaemin and Jeno exchanged looks and laughed at the younger.
Poor boy, had a ton of expectations to meet he couldn’t even date around.
Chenle’s main priority had to be his family, and their business. He couldn’t afford any distractions, but to him, she was more than that. She was his driving force, and it hurt the boy to be keeping her a secret. Only the boys knew about his secret relationship, if word got out that Zhong Chenle the son of the most well-respected corporate business owner was dating, it would be the entirety of Shanghai talking about it.
As much as he wanted nothing more than to show the world and tell everyone who he’s in love with, he knew she wasn’t ready to face it all and step into that kind of light yet.
Chenle x Reader – In The Limelight
While the two boys took Chenle into his room, it left the three boys and Haechan’s buzzing phone out in the cold night air that the terrace provided.
“What happened this time?” Renjun asks, in line with the phone that’s close to annoying the hell out of him if it doesn’t stop vibrating the entire table. Haechan had his head down, and he lets out a laugh. Humorless, just cold.
“I don’t get her. She wants me, then the next second she doesn’t,”
When the boy lifts his head, it’s made obvious of all the pain he’s been hiding. His eyes, teary and sullen. Renjun couldn’t help but laugh at his friend’s face, clapping his hands and throwing his head back in laughter. “Aw, c’mon man! It’s only 12am,”
This, however, doesn’t humor Mark the same way. Seeing Haechan in pain was like a bullet through his heart. He gave the boy a pat on the back and watches as his head fall once again. Mark swears he saw a tear fall too.
“I’m not just an object you can set aside, then use when needed,” Haechan continues to wail. Although he was already drunk, Mark felt that Haechan’s words were the most sober when he wasn’t.
As for Mark, the literature major didn’t care much about alcohol. However, it did get his creative juices flowing. Most of Mark’s best written pieces were done when he couldn’t even remember writing them.
During blurry nights intoxicated in alcohol, Mark’s thoughts flow easily through him and onto the sheets of paper that lie around his room. Sometimes, he’ll drink on a school night to get an essay finished for it’s due date the next day.
But seeing as he had no pending things to write, Mark drank for the sake of trying to numb himself somehow. Although it didn’t work well when the person he’s trying to get his mind off of is sat right beside him, thinking of someone else.
Mark x Haechan – Always, I’ll Care
[COMING SOON]
[1:13 am]
When Jaemin and Jeno came back, Jeno was already carrying a guitar. He strums it softly to a random tune he came up with on the spot. Haechan, of course, was singing along. Throwing in words like ‘baby’ and murmuring a few words about love. By now, Renjun’s cheeks were pink and a few hiccups had already escaped him.
“Do you remember that girl Jeno dated second semester of senior year?” he says, out of the blue.
The boys need not ask who, as they all knew who Renjun was referring to. The group of boys burst into fits of laughter and the guitar takes an abrupt stop as its player shoots his friends a nasty look for bringing up his past unprovoked.
“You were smitten, bro,” Mark smacks Jeno’s shoulder as he giggles.
Jeno daggers his eyes to Renjun, who has his head thrown back, laughing.
“How about you, huh? What was her name? _____-“ Jeno begins his avengement by mentioning the name he knew would get back at Renjun. He gets cut off shortly.
“I’ll stop you right there, sir,” Renjun places a hand over Jeno’s mouth before he could speak the name.
“C’mon, how many years has that been though?” Jeno asks after getting the boy’s hand off of his mouth.
“Two, and what about it?” Renjun defensively counters, surprising the other boys.
“He knows! Wow, do you keep count?” Jaemin chuckles, amusement all over his face.
“Shut up, ____ ,” Renjun points a finger at the male, mentioning the name of Jaemin’s past lover. Jaemin’s jaw drops and he crosses his arms,
“That was low,” The corner of his lips tugged into a smile nonetheless.
“C’mon, guys. It’s not like we’re releasing bad omens talking about our exes,” Haechan tugs on Renjun to sit him back down.
“Easy for you to say, you’ve only had one ex and she’s your girlfriend,” Renjun huffs. No one dared to speak the name of Renjun’s ex around him aside from people who have balls like Jeno, Jaemin, Haechan and Mark.
It wasn’t because he was bitter about her. But try as he might, there was a feeling within him that says she’s the one. Or she was. And Renjun was stuck, thinking about all the what if’s. Even after 2 years.
Renjun x Reader – To Be So Lonely [COMING SOON]
“I see things are getting heated over here,” Jisung stood by the door to the balcony now, with a sly smirk on his face.
“Ah right, let’s talk about mister lover boy over here,” Jeno motioned to the younger boy, who surprisingly is the only one to have a love life at the moment.
Jisung was courting the student body president. He could not, however, get her to answer him, but the boy never gives up.
“You must have some balls to hit on your senior,” Jaemin comments. The student body president was in fact two years older than Jisung, but the boy was determined.
Jisung x Reader – Like A Fool
[COMING SOON]
“At least one of us is progressing in terms of love,” Renjun sighed.
“Jeno’s doing well though, isn’t he? Lots of girls always after him,” Jisung gestures to the male beside him who’d started playing the guitar once again.
“I don’t think that counts as doing well,” Jeno mutters, absentmindedly.
“Oh yeah? And how does having half the school pine over you not count as doing well?” Jaemin lightly nudges his friend.
“Because the one I love, is in someone else’s arms right now,”
And cue the exaggerated crying and wailing of his friends, who’d given him sympathetic pats on the back.
Jeno x Reader – We Find Love
[COMING SOON]
“Oh, man,” grumbled Haechan, clearly already very intoxicated. He placed his head between his hands to try and stop his world from spinning. “I got to go to her, I have to say sorry,”
The boys all averted their eyes to the boy who looks to be having his spiritual awakening.
Mark’s heart dropped upon hearing Haechan’s words. He looked down at his hands and sighed. It wouldn’t be the first time Haechan had a sudden realization and wanted to be in his girlfriend’s arms right then and there.
It usually happened when he was smashed drunk, after the 7th or 8th cup. Asking his mates to take him home and running into the arms of his girl.
Mark didn’t know why he wasn’t used to it at this point. It isn’t and never will be him.
“No way,” Jaemin tutted. “You gathered us all here to drink and bothered us for weeks then you’ll flake midway? I don’t think so,” The other boys agreed.
Renjun stretched his arms and fell back onto the chair he sat on. “What’s with the sudden change of atmosphere anyway? It’s like we did release bad omens when we spoke about our exes,”
“You just had to bring ____ up!” Jeno threw a fry at his friend, who was the first to mention his ex and start the discussion. Renjun caught the fry in his mouth, surprising the boys and himself.
“Let’s just drink up,” Renjun raises his glass in the air, although it’s half empty.
“Nice try, here have a refill. We’re all taking equal shots,” Mark had risen and was now reaching for the bottle of beer to pour his friend’s glass.
“To… I don’t know- fuck! To getting fucked up!” Haechan yelled, raising his glass in the air.
The rest of the boys do the same, clinking glasses together and downing it mercilessly to their livers.
Relationships come and go, but the dreamies are always here to stay.

Nothing Up My Sleeves (But Aces)
Back when Tied Up With Strings was still in the draft stages (and I was playing around with ideas), I wrote a concept for a Villain!Izuku who used magic tricks in place of a Quirk. It’s unlikely to ever see the light of day, so here’s what Chapter 1 would’ve looked like.
I think I vaguely planned for his villainous mentor to be Mr Compress? Dunno. I’m not much of a note maker. The Heist on Kunioka’s did make it’s way to TUWS, and I hope to use Nobusuma of the Night in something because I like the general concept of his Quirk.
*************************** At the tender age of four, a young boy’s dreams were already crashing down around him. Everyone was very clear. Very very clear. He didn’t have a Quirk. He couldn’t be a Hero. It didn’t matter that Izuku wanted to be a Hero more than anything in the world. It didn’t matter that he would do everything he could to be a Hero.
People without Quirks were not allowed to be Heroes. Those were the rules. And so, faced with the destruction of his dreams, a four year old boy has no other way to deal with it but to cry at the unfairness of it all.
So deep in his grief is he that he doesn’t notice the strange and unfamiliar figure approaching him until they speak. “What bothers you so, my good man?”
Startled out of his sobbing, he turns his head to look up at a tall, kindly-looking man. He was dressed in the fanciest clothes his little mind could fathom, like the kind of people who would be on TV shows. He even had one of those tall hats. “I… I don’t have… I don’t have a Quirk… so everyone says I can’t be a Hero...” He mumbles, sniffling a little and going to wipe his nose.
The man holds out a hand and flicks his wrist, revealing a silken handkerchief he offers to him. The simple, elegant little move has Izuku mesmerised. “My condolences,” the kind man says, although the boy isn’t sure what a condolence is or what it has to do with handkerchiefs.
He’s too busy being impressed with that simple sleight of hand to even care though. “... Cool…” He mumbles, eyes wide and amazed. He slowly looks up at the kind man with the brightest expression he’s had in days, his previous sorrow already pushed aside in favour of this new incredible thing.
The kind man smiles beatifically. “Would you like to see more tricks, my good man?”
He nods so hard his head feels like it’s going to fly off and cause an accident.
Kunioka’s Jewelry Boutique was a deceptively small store, built during the early days of the Meiji era and combining the principles of architecture of the both the East and West to create an elegant little store. But for all it’s deceptive size and modesty, Kunioka’s was the place for jewelry for the rich and selective. Every piece was commissioned and handmade by the master artisan that was Kunioka Takamaru, whose ‘Feathertouch’ Quirk could allow him to detect flaws and imperfections invisible to human eyes.
Of course, such incredibly valuable jewelry was well secured against intrepid thieves and thugs. External security was tight beyond belief - electronic locks bound to biometrics secured the entrances, and each door was guarded by a pair of guards at all times. Inside, security cameras tracked every move, and the slightest disturbance detected by the operators would cause them to trigger a call to a local Hero agency and the nearest police department. If, and this was a BIG if, you somehow got past the guards AND bypassed the cameras, then you’d have to deal with the third security measure. No jewelry was on display in Kunioka’s, because one did not browse. One made an appointment, and you had best come in with a design in mind because a master artisan of that level does not care for time wasters. So everything of value - money, jewels, what have you - was located in a safe.
The ‘Iron Mausoleum’ model Safe from OptiSecurity with extreme authentication. First, a ten digit code. Second, a fingerprint scan. Third, a retinal scan. Fourth, all of those things had to be done by two different people simultaneously. If you tried to burn or cut your way in, you’d be in for a tough time as well, as the cutting edge materials had been tested against not only the best tools money could buy, but some of the most powerful Quirks. It was rumoured that even one of All Might’s Smashes couldn’t do more than dent it. Inside was most of the money and jewels. Penetrating it was not impossible, but incredibly time consuming and resource intensive. When such a safe was breached, it was not done so onsite, but first stolen entirely using the aid of powerful Quirks - an unfortunate reality that no Safemaker has yet to overcome.
The last and final defense mechanism against thieves was the exclusive handmade quality of Kunioka’s jewelry itself. Moving such a hot, one of a kind product would be difficult for even the most experienced fences - fences experienced enough to know that even trying to move it could potentially risk their downfall, and thus, be wise enough to avoid it.
These security mechanisms, four pillars of nigh insurmountable difficulty, had forged a reputation for Kunioka’s as an impenetrable fortress from which no villain could pierce and escape.
Until now.
There is an essential weakness in any security mechanism, and that it is ultimately designed to be opened. No door can be locked forever - if you wanted that, you’d build a wall instead. All those locks, all those things, they were meant to keep out people who weren’t supposed to be there. So if you were supposed to be there…
The Guards snapped to attention when Kunioka Takemaru approached his store in the late hours of the night, the distinct pinched face of the elderly miser unmistakeable even now.
Both guards bowed immediately. “Kunioka-sama!” said the woman on the left, her long, lank hair curling in the wind of its own accord, “Forgive me for this impudence, but why have you returned here so late at night?”
The full force of Kunioka Takemaru’s glare was upon her, a look so powerful it was rumoured it was how he cut his diamonds. “Do not presume to question me! Open the door already!”
“Y-yes Kunioka-sama!” She whirled around and punched the keycode in, and allowed it to scan her retina. The door slid open with nary a sound, and the miser brushed through without a second’s pause, leaving the two guards deeply bowing to the air.
The second guard, a doll-like figure with skin just like fine china turned to look at the first. “... You, are in so much shit right now,” they mumbled.
“Don’t remind me,” she said quietly. Neither of them, with their heads lowered in a respectful bow, noticed the figure approaching behind them.
Until it was too late.
***************************
Within the store, Kunioka moved straight towards the backroom workshop and the safe. He glanced at the cameras cursorily, before sliding open the workshop door and stepping out of their view, pausing just at the safe. “Mizutami. Present yourself.”
In the center of the room was a still, stone pond. It’s presence lent an air of tranquility and reflection to the otherwise pragmatic workspace, the stone basin artful and natural compared to the soft tatami mat floors and paper walls (behind which there were a foot of steel). The surface rippled slightly, and a figure rose up out of the water, sleek and shiny, even in their finely tailored suit.
This was the secret fifth pillar of security in Kunioka’s Jewelry Boutique - Mizutami ‘the Kappa’, whose ‘Still Waters’ Quirk allowed him to hide in pools of water, provided they were not disturbed too much. “Kunioka-sama,” He said, silken voice as tranquil as the pond he rose out of, “It is a rare honour to greet you so late in the night.” His was a presence not even the other guards were aware of - but there were no cameras here in the backroom. Kunioka Takemaru was a genius of unparalleled talent, and to have the risk of someone witnessing his technique… or selling those videos to rivals? Unacceptable didn’t even begin to describe it.
“Has anyone been in here?” Kunioka muttered, glancing around.
“... No, Kunioka-sama. I have been watching as always. No intruders. Is something bothering you?”
Kunioka frowned quietly. “I… have had a bad feeling. A terrible feeling. Have you heard of Morgaine?”
“Morgaine?” Mizutami echoed, possibly the only person who could get away with repeating Kunioka’s words to himself. “I must ask… do you mean the thief?”
“Yes. Recently, there’s been a string of robberies, hasn’t there? High profile ones too. Kazuno’s lost that tiara she was making, and then Mikusoki’s was cleaned entirely of their diamonds. Nobody ever saw the thief either. They came in the morning, and found everything gone with only a name behind.”
Mizutami nodded, slipping out of the pond carefully. Despite having emerged from the water, there was not a drop on him. “I see. So Kunioka-sama was worried and came here?”
“Indeed. Let us open the safe, Mizutami, and be sure of it.” Amongst the employees at Kunioka’s Jewelry Boutique, any number of them could provide access codes for the verification side of the safe, but only Kunioka himself could provide the ‘master-level’ authentication needed to open it with their assistance.
Together, they assembled at the safe door. They punched in their codes in perfect synchronicity, pressed their index fingers against the scanners, and then leaned forward to allow their retinas to be scanned.
The door swung open silently, revealing a treasure trove of jewels and already made jewelry waiting for pickup.
“As expected, Kunioka-sama. There is no cause… for…” Mizutami’s eyes widened in alarm, and he glanced over to Kunioka who was already swaying on his feet. Everything was getting foggy, and his grip on his consciousness was growing slippery by the second. A drug? A gas…? But… when…
Mizutami the Kappa slumped on his feet, a fog overtaking his mind.
For a moment, nothing happened. And then a figure stepped through the door, humming thoughtfully to themselves. They were dressed in a dark blue cloak that reached just past their knees, hood drawn up to hide their hair and shadow their face - not that their face was revealed to begin with. A elaborate venetian mask, painted and crafted in an elegant style depicting a gently frowning face hid whatever was behind it. They stepped past the pair of swaying men, and casually began filling a small sack with the contents of the safe.
Gemstones of unparalleled quality, rings and necklaces of gold and silver, intricate earrings and breathtakingly beautiful tiaras - all of it vanished into their cloak. All that emerged from it was a single bone white business card, an artfully inscribed name the only thing on it - ‘Morgaine’. The figure placed it in the centre of the safe, and calmly moved both of the men out of the way of the safe door as they shut it.
“Kunioka-sama. You checked the safe, but found everything in order. You think it was silly of you to worry - your security is unparalleled of course,” They said in a smooth, robotic hush. The telltale sound of a voice changer.
Kunioka smirked slightly, eyes still unfocused and vacant. “Of course. No stupid thief could get past the Five Pillars,” He mumbled.
The figure turned to Mizutami. “You watched all night, and saw nothing. Kunioka-sama came in, and you told him as much. You checked the safe with Kunioka-sama, and you found everything in order as well.”
“... Kunioka-sama should not worry so much. That is what I am paid to do, after all,” the Kappa murmured.
“Yes. That’s true, isn’t it?” The figure added, calmly stepping past both of them. “You’re both going to have a calm talk about security matters - maybe beefing it up a little, because you can never be too careful. The phantom thief, Morgaine, is about, after all. But after say, twenty minutes, go home and have a rest Kunioka-sama. You’re going to have a big day tomorrow.”
And then the figure slipped out of the room, leaving them both to obey the suggestions.
The two front guards were still standing in a mindless haze, and the figure paused to give them some suggestions. And then when they turn around to leave, there’s another cloaked figure in front of them.
Well. It almost went off perfectly.
***************************
“You would be Morgaine, wouldn’t you?” rasped the cloaked figure, leering at them with a pale mouth full of gleaming teeth. “I, am Nobusuma.” He gave the thief a mocking bow, his own black cloak fluttering with the movement..
“The underground Pro Hero, ‘Nobusuma’. I’m honored you came out just for me.” Morgaine spread their cloak out just a bit, eyes narrowed behind the smoky lenses of their mask.
‘Nobusuma’ leered wider. “It was child’s play to predict you’d strike here, Morgaine. I must say, I’m surprised you succeeded as well as you did. A Hypnosis Quirk, is it? You seem to have everyone under your spell.”
“‘Spell’ is right,” said Morgaine, “This isn’t a Quirk. It’s ‘Magic’.” There was a mocking tone to their voice now, bordering on challenging. “So if you’re not careful you’ll fall under the ‘spell’ as well.”
“Ha!” Nobusuma cackled, “Call it whatever you want! But it won’t change a thing!” They rushed forward, goggles gleaming in the night as a hand clad in a fingerless glove reached out for him.
Fingerless gloves - so the power relied on contact? If it was skin contact, they were going to have a fun time trying. Morgaine was covered head to toe. They dodged and weaved artfully between the rapid jabs, nimbly avoiding contact with the fingers.
But then Nobusuma did something unexpected. He took a deep breath, and blew out a thick, black smoke from his mouth, engulfing Morgaine’s head in the cloud. “You fell for my trap!” He crowed, grinning madly, “My ‘Blackout’ doesn’t work through skin contact - but through gas! Once inhaled, you’ll lose all your senses. Sight, smell, touch… hearing. You can’t even hear me, can you? In that pitch blackness where you sense nothing, your concentration is invariably broken! No soul can withstand it!”
Morgaine stumbled around, eyes wide behind the lenses. “I… what?! I can’t hear! My… you… what did you do?!”
Nobusuma cackled, stalking forward. “Another upstart Villain brought down low.” He dodged a wild punch from the stumbling Morgaine and smoothly cuffed the outstretched arm with one part of a gleaming pair of handcuffs. “Pathetic, really. Such a predictable schedule, such a predictable tactic. Magic? Don’t make me laugh.” He pushed the still-fumbling Villain over to the nearby lamp post and cuffed their arm to that. “In the face of the absolute fear of the darkness… even the strongest villain cowers.”
Morgaine paused in their stumbling, tilting their masked face at Nobusuma. It was a gesture too pointed to be done in ignorance but… that was impossible wasn’t it? They breathed in the gas! “It’s kind of funny,” They said, rubbing their wrist with one hand, “Such a gloomy guy is a Hero?”
Nobusuma’s eyes bulged behind his goggles, going to reach out with one arm only to find that it was cuffed to the lamp post instead of Morgaine’s. “What? How?! It’s impossible! Even those with Extra-sensory Quirks are blinded by my ‘Blackout’! Complete deprivation of all the senses! There’s no way you could’ve escaped!” He seethed, “But no matter! Any Pro worth their salt has a backup!” He whipped his second arm out from under the cloak, holding… a bouquet of flowers? “My taser… how?”
“Didn’t I tell you?” the Villain replied, “If you weren’t careful, you’d fall under my ‘spell’ as well. This isn’t a Quirk. It’s ‘Magic’.” They reached into their cloak, and withdrew a handful of… sand? “Goodnight, Nobusuma of the Night. We will not meet again, I think.” And with a puff of their breath, the surprisingly smooth sand-dust rushed past Nobusuma’s face.
A sickly sweet scent filled the Hero’s nostrils, and he felt his eyelids grow heavy. “Damn it… beaten… by a rookie…” He mumbled, slumping down to the ground.
When he was found, hours later, he was stripped half naked with an inky black gothic ‘M’ drawn on his forehead.
***************************
The figure known as Morgaine stumbled into a dingy, badly lit bar and flounced onto a stool. They held up a gloved hand, and the bartender immediately started pouring them a drink - of juice. Apple Mango, to be specific.
“Bad day?” asked the Bartender, sliding the glass over to the thief. “You were supposed to have that big job today. Did it not go as planned?”
The thief caught the drink, swirling it around a little bit before covering the top with their hand. When they lifted it, a long, childish crazy straw was there, and they adjusted the mask slightly to slip the tip underneath and take a long draw. “No, no, Kurogiri-san. Went off pretty much perfectly actually.” With the mask no longer sealed against his skin, his voice came out naturally - soft, and youthful.
“Oh? I’m impressed. Please don’t take this in offense, but I wasn’t sure you could manage.”
Morgaine waved him off. “It’s fine, it’s fine,” He murmured, wiping his mouth under the mask. “Hitting Kunioka’s has to have been the hardest thing I’ve done so far. What a crazy old man.”
“You call him crazy, Morgaine-san, but the one who went to all that effort to bypass the security was you. Studying the guard schedules, the defences. Preparing a hypnotic gas. Going so far as to implanting suggestions in Kunioka’s mind so that he’d go check the safe in the middle of the night…”
The thief huffed again. “It’s not like I made the gas. All I did was exploit an old man’s moment of weakness.” He paused, swirling the straw around a little. “... and handcuff Nobusuma to a lamp post, I guess,” He added after a moment’s consideration.
“Nobusuma of the Night?” the bartender echoed, giving him an amused look. “That’s pretty impressive, Morgaine-san. Nobusuma’s record is quite impressive.”
“It was luck mostly,” Morgaine said, brushing off the praise easily, “Nobusuma’s Quirk is a gas; to protect myself against my own gas, I had Giran fit my mask with a filter. The idiot even explained what the gas was supposed to do to me. Faking it was easy.”
Kurogiri shook his head gently, black wisps moving with the movement. “You’re too modest, Morgaine-san,” He said quietly, wiping down the bartop. “Will you be sticking around much longer? Shigaraki is planning a venture, and he might request your expertise.”
Morgaine frowned at his juice - not that the bartender could see it behind the mask. “Since when does Shigaraki-kun ask for my expertise? I’m a thief.” Despite his attitude to his ‘exploits’, he was fairly fond of Shigaraki Tomura (or as he often referred to him in private, ‘Mr Handsy’). The two occasionally played video games together, but there was a certain… unsettling quality about him. Mostly the hands. If he was honest, it was almost entirely the hands. But Shigaraki mostly dealt with violent crimes, and Morgaine wasn’t really into violence. Sure, sometimes he engaged in it, but only when he thought it was necessary or the target deserved it.
“Mmm. I thought you might say something like that,” He said smoothly, polishing a glass to sparkling perfection. “But I have some information about the venture you might find interesting.”
He looked at Kurogiri for a few moments before sighing. “Alright, I’ll bite. Is he hitting up a Hero Convention? Because I don’t think any of those are happening soon.”
There’s a faint little chuckle out of the mist. “No. We’re targeting the Unforeseen Simulation Joint - a training ground for prospective Heroes to learn the arts of rescuing.” The gold eyes sharpened slightly. “U.A’s Class 1-A will be attending, and with them, the Symbol of Peace.”
Morgaine tapped his mask with a single finger, and then slowly pulled the mask up to the top of their head, coincidentally shifting the hood down. A pale, freckled face slowly revealed itself to the world, forest green eyes sparkling with a sense of mischief and mirth.
“I’ll be there with bells on,” said Midoriya Izuku, grinning a little with anticipation.

The Stacks - Chapter 10
Ships: Eventual logicality and prinxiety, abusive anxceit, slow burn
Summary: In this society there is a place where the poor and unwanted are placed and kept hidden away from everyone else, where poverty and crime are a frequent and life shines for no one. Stacked up high in the sky, this is the furthest anyone living there will ever reach. When a Depression consumes the land, and the government fails to bring an end to it, society turns even further on the residents of the Stacks, accusing them for bringing the rest of them down. What no one knows, however, is that it’ll take the work of four unlikely people to not only bring an end to the poverty, but also to this inequality.
Chapter One Previous Next
AO3 - Here
The Senate Hall, the building where the summits were held and national records, information, and law was kept, was a circular-shaped grand architectural creation meant to hold the most powerful people in the nation. In the center of it all was the Discussion Hall, the room where legislature was made, executive orders were carried out, and judicial decisions were cast; numerous other meeting rooms were scattered around the building for private meetings between committees. There were fifty members in total, a Senator and Deputy Senator from each of the twenty-five provinces. Sessions were held for ten hour hearings, with breaks for meals in between. The worst part of it was the body’s poor scheduling, as many Senators or Deputies were scheduled to be more than one place at once. After the ten hours on seminars was completed, each of them went on their way to go over their takeaway work and proposals for the next day.
Logan sat in the upper front part of the round stands, the order set up in order of when each province was established, his being one of the last at twenty second, with Joan at his side. The Chancellor sat in the center booth, currently regarding the room on issues of foreign trade with their largest supplier and neighboring country. A good number of the senators felt they were paying too much for goods and wanted to raise the import tax, while others feared straining the ties with their closest ally. Logan was against raising the tax.
“Recent statistics have proven that we have been paying two percent more in international tax than Gemma. We need to show them that we will not put up with this by raising theirs four times as more.” Senator Dean Wainwright declared, slamming his palm on the table every other word for emphasis. Applause from about half of the room erupted before quickly being shouted over.
“If we raise their tax Gemma might see it as a threat and pull back on trade. It is not a risk we can take with the state of our economy.” Senator Lucy Lee argued, shushing the crowd.
“So you think we should simply continue to pay more to the Gemmians?” Senator Rachel O'Connor challenged.
“No I-”
Logan was caressing a bleeding headache from the nearly nonstop yelling of stupid politicians who appeared to love listening to their own voice more than actually accomplishing policy. The back and forth went on for a while more, the Chancellor doing nothing to call order as he should be. Eventually, Logan could no longer take it.
“The resolution is clear.” His voice cut in suddenly over the fighting senators, “Send an ambassador to negotiate a set tax that is equivalent to each other’s. That way we can bring their tax down, and raise ours up without the risk of offending our close ally.”
The crowd began murmuring amongst each other, some seeming to agree, while others bitterly disregarded his option. Not soon after, Wainwright, an old, withered man who was plagued with his own selfish pride stood from his seat abruptly to yell out an accusation; however, Chancellor Jackson stepped in before he could unleash a flood of personal insults.
“That is enough Senator Wainwright; Senator Winchester does make an excellent point, one that must be thought over properly with calm minds before a final decision is made. This topic will be returned to on a later date. For now, let’s move on to the next item on the docket.”
At the moment, Logan would love nothing more than to jump out of a window. He wondered why he had chosen to go into politics sometimes when he was only ever surrounded by idiots. The meeting had just adjourned for the day, the multitudinous senators and deputies exited the room and Logan did not spare a second to escape as well.
Joan was currently in a meeting, having left the main congregation about an hour ago with the Natural Resources and Environment Protection Committee they were a part of, and wouldn’t be finished until late in the evening. Now that his time was, somewhat, free, Logan went to go do as he would almost every day since he had arrived, and that was to scavenge through the Senatorial Archives to continue his investigation. Joan had provided him with all the knowledge they possibly could have on the Purple Revolt, but there were still many questions left unanswered. For the past three weeks Logan has been wandering through the massive shelves of the archives, looking for any details he could find on the subject, but oddly and suspiciously, enough nothing turned up. When he had searched for it by name, it was found nonexistent; when he went to the section dedicated to the history of The Stacks, Logan discovered that much of it was missing, their placements labeled, but the files out. He asked the Head Archivist if someone had checked them out, but he was told that they were confidential and no further explanation could be given.
In the company of each passing day that turned into a week of no more than a speck of data unearthed, Logan’s disturbance and inquisitiveness escalated. He dared not to ask anyone else on the subject, nor share his interest with any of his colleagues, not even Joan. Nevertheless, as the weeks went on, Logan began to feel the creeping suspicion of the others around him at his odd obsession with the archives, he had even been asked about it by Martha Quinn, the Senator of Ivy.
Martha was one of the few Senators who were under forty years old, being the age of thirty, still leaving him as the youngest at twenty-eight. Logan got along well enough with her, agreeing with her views on quite a few policy areas, however she was known to be nosy and quite crafty, any information split to her could immediately be pivoted right back at him with a flick of her wrist. Despite being so young she had many connections within the Senate and outside of it, it was best to avoid her becoming involved in any way at all costs.
Alas, she was persistent in her prodding and often offered to accompany him to the archives to assist him. Logan tried to gently let her down but she refused to hear what she didn’t want to; a reason why she was such a brash Senator. Just as he had feared, her self-inclusion into his investigation only set him back further as he tried to derail her suspicion towards him. At this point he only had three more weeks left with the opportunity to be in the nation’s largest data bank and possibly find what he was looking for, he surely wouldn’t be able to do that with Miss Quinn breathing down his neck every second of the day.
“Actually, on second hand I think I’ll go and rest in my hotel quarters, I have obtained a rather painful headache from today’s chaos. It was a pleasure chatting with you Senator Quinn.” Logan excused himself, politely giving her a small bow before. Martha said nothing in response, staring him down with her calm, calculating as she watched the way every muscle on his body moved, reading him like a book. She offered him a smile.
“You know Logan,” She purred, stalking her way around him as if her were her prey, “there are a lot of rumors floating around you, you best be careful not to draw any more attention to yourself, lest the investigator becomes the investigat-ee.”
Martha bounded off down the hall he had planned to take to avoid her, effectively cutting through his previous bluff to go back to his hotel and revealing his true intentions to stay, or else he would have accompanied her out. Her luscious black curls fell down and bounced off her waist in an eloquent ballet. She had let him go today, but Logan knew she’d be back to try and snuff out the truth from him. Try as she might, there was no way she could hope to get a single meaningful word out of him without it coming with his full intention.
It truly was a pleasure, Miss Quinn.
Logan glanced back to the doors of the archives, contemplating the contents that lay behind them, and then walked away, following in her footsteps. Whatever it was he was searching for, it didn’t exist here, and he could trust no one within these walls to provide the answers he so craved. Yet, there was one who very likely could assist him. The man who had started him on this scavenger hunt of his, his chef.
...
The serene calm of the apartment home, quiet and still from being unbothered and vacant, grey with the light of the sun through the clouds being the only provider in the dim setting sat in a perpetual loop was erratically shattered when the front door was brutishly kicked inwards from the outside hall. A caramel brown briefcase was chucked into the open living area, hitting the edge of the lush red sofa, flinging open with a cascade of papers soaring into the air and across the rich mahogany flooring. The action thusly destroying the prior peace and replacing it with something much more conflicting.
Roman charged into his residence with a heavy huff, slamming the door behind him, and stomped his way to his couch and collapsed into the cushions in a frustrated heap. He paid no mind to the mess he had created beside him, too focused on the vexation that was bubbling erratically inside.
It has been nearly five weeks since the robberies had begun, and not a single fucking trace of evidence had been found. The reporters were describing it as if the treasures had seemingly disappeared by out of thin air. Of course he knew that was a lie and simply the media trying to get views. Talyn themselves was also perplexed about this case, unsure how to pin down the thief when the hits were so sporadic and elusive. This kid was able to rob three homes within a single night, yet go under radar for several days and appear in a completely different part of the city.
Several suspects and captured robbers had been brought in for investigation, but none have been proven guilty for the mass conduct. Talyn had sent him confidential intel on each suspect, but once he saw their faces he knew it wasn’t them. Talyn questioned him on this, becoming suspicious of his behavior.
“How are you so certain that this kid you ran into is the same one whose commiting all these acts? It could be the work of several people for all we know.” They told him earlier that same day when they met for coffee during his break.
“It’s him, Talyn, I know it is.” Roman said firmly, lifting his heavy head from its previous position in his hands on the tabletop.
“No, you think it is.” They denied pointedly, setting their mug to the side with vigor, their voice strong and commanding, but also caring and parental. “Ro, you have to let this go. It isn’t your job anymore and you’re becoming obsessed with this in a way that’s not good for you. As the new head of security, you have other matters to focus on other than a single thief.”
“A thief has single-handedly taken millions worth of possessions from innocent and good people to do lord knows what, striking fear into the minds of the masses, and creating civil unrest. And I’m supposed to just let it go?” Roman hissed bitterly, clenching his fist tightly in his lap and digging his heel into the floor under the table. Talyn sighed resignation and backed away from the whole debacle, knowing that he could not be reasoned with as he was. They stood and slid their jacket on over their shoulders, placing cash on the table to cover their end of the bill.
“This case isn’t going anywhere anytime soon with what’s been showing up. I know you don’t like to throw in the hat, but maybe you should consider it this time and focus on helping the province.”
After they left he didn’t even bother going back to work and instead went home, which led him up to where he was now, lying on the couch in a very bad mood. He was still technically on his break, although it would soon end in less than ten minutes. Roman will most likely be late getting back to work, but he didn’t care about all that at the moment.
I am helping the province. He thought begrudgingly. I’m trying to protect it from this scumbag. I’m not obsessed. Why would I be?
Roman sat up with an exhale of hot air, letting his back sink into the fluff of his cushion pillows, staring blankly at the ceiling. It was true that this was no longer his duty, and he know had something more to look after, but the endless paperwork was never for him, and it wasn’t what he had expected or desired. Roman was best in his element at the front line, facing the criminals head on and taking them down with his bare hands and hand pistol. He couldn’t just suddenly leave that part of him behind, it was what made him who he was. It defined him. When Roman was young he looked up to the police and wanted to be one of them. He entered college and studied then studied in an academy, spending years of his life on this path. Now his life has suddenly changed, but he wasn’t sure if it’s for the better.
That’s not to say he doesn’t see his role as being unimportant, but the mindless hours of dulling meetings and discussions over policy and action, only to come up with nothing in the end didn’t hold a candle to what he once did. He was helping people, sure, but not at the rate he wanted. When he was a cop he always had his radio on, even when he was off-duty, so that he could rush in if danger appeared. From anything to assault, armed robberies, car crashes, or just a noisy neighbor, Roman wanted to help the people no matter what, no matter how small. As a politician he was just arguing over how something should be carried out when it was clearly obvious.
Throwing his head to the side, Roman looked over at his digital wall clock to check the time. He was ten minutes late already. Diana was surely going to give him a firm talking to once he came back.
Logan trusted you for a reason. It may not be what you wanted, but you can do some good.
Moaning out loud, Roman threw himself of the couch and dramatically crawled on his knees to his scattered papers and haphazardly jammed them into his case. He may be blunt and reckless by nature, that was one reason he was such a great cop, but he still stood by the honor of his badge; and for now, that badge called him to be something else.
…
With his glasses in a pot of soup and running off of five hours of sleep, Patton’s day was not going as he exactly wanted or expected it to.
The morning came much too early for him, at three A.M. He woke in a panic, sweaty scare, his hands held in front of him acting as a shield. He looked around frantically, searching for a threat, making sure that his sons were still at his side. Thomas was still knocked out, his arms and legs spread out widely like the little star he was. Emile was in a ball, seeming a bit disturbed by the sudden movement, but was otherwise fine. Patton let out a relieved sigh, although he wasn’t sure why, because, not matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t for the life of him remember what he had dreamt of to make him that way.
He tried to lie back down, close his eyes, and go back to sleep, but the lingering feeling of unease kept him up. After about half an hour of pointless attempts, Patton got up from bed, careful to not disturb the boys, slipped on his shoes, grabbed his coat. He made his way out into the backyard garden. The first time he had found this place he had instantly become enchanted with it. Something like this never existed in the Stacks, in fact there was barely any natural vegetation there, even the riverbank held little plant life. That’s why when Patton saw this place, full of beautiful flowers and amazing varieties of bushes and buds, he had fell in love with the garden.
Patton would occasionally come out here during his breaks and simply gaze at the plants, finding it therapeutic, but he had never come here during nighttime. Yet he found the result all the same. The moonlit roses and carnations, names he had learned from a plant guide he had found in Logan’s downstairs library, the one he had open to the staff and visitors. The red of the flowers, which were fiery and vibrant in the sun, were now purplish silver. He had been enjoying his time out there; that is until he was suddenly shouted at and tackled to the ground.
Ahmed later explained that he only saw his figure and not any characteristics, causing him to believe that Patton was an intruder. He apologized for doing so, but made him promise that he’d tell him ahead of time if he planned to be in the gardens.
The rest of his morning wasn’t as dramatic, but not any easier either. Due to his lack of sleep, Patton was more sluggish when preparing breakfast for everyone, giving cause for Elise to ridicule and lecture him, even though she already refused to ever eat his cooking. Because of this he ended up being late taking the boys to school and had to sprint there on foot while carrying both of them, Thomas on his back and Emile in his arms. He had managed to get them to class on time, but their teacher had given him an incredulous look, peering down at his food covered apron and messy hair. Patton acted as if he didn’t notice and tried to not let her scorn bother him.
During the return to the manor the grey clouds that had been plaguing the skies since yesterday began to pour down rain on his umbrella-less self, drenching him by the time he made it back. Elise scrunched her nose at him as he dripped water across the floor. Patton apologized to Jamie for the mess but he didn’t mind and was much more worried about him, offering to run him a bath while he changed from his wet clothes. I took a few moments for Patton to oblige, not wanting to be a burden, but he eventually conceded to his wishes.
The bath had been warm and relaxing, so much in fact that he almost fell asleep in it, but by the time he was done it was around the time he cook lunch.
Which had then led him to his present situation.
Patton had decided to make chicken soup with rice, as it seemed appropriate for the stormy weather, but while he was doing so the steam from the pot boiling fogged up his glasses. He wiped at them to clear away the fog, but he accidentally knocked them off and they fell into the pot. Patton frowned a little, bit simply picked up a pair of tongs to pull them out of the boiling broth. It took him several dozen times to pick up his thin, frail glasses, but once he had them snared he pulled them out and placed them in the sink. He cleaned them off under the faucet the best he could and placed them back on his face, but the water droplets blocked his vision. He tried to wipe it off on his shirt, but the smudges made everything blurry.
Patton closed his eyes and swallowed his breath, took a deep breath, then continued with what he was doing, making do with what he could see.
“Hey Pat Pat!” Jamie greeted walking into the kitchen; he was wearing an apron around his waist and had his cleaning gloves still on his hands, meaning he had just started his break.
“Hi Jay Jay.” Patton said as enthusiastically as he could, but ended up sounding tired.
“Whoa, you okay?” Jamie asked in concern, taking a seat at the breakfast bar.
“Yeah, just had a bit of a rough day.” He smiled, “I’ll be just fine. I’m sorry that I made you clean up the water I dripped on the floor then had you run a bath.”
“No, no it’s fine! What kind of person wouldn’t do that? Well, besides Elise.” He joked, well versed in how stingy their butler can be.
More people than you’d expect. Patton thought bitterly before catching himself. He shouldn’t be thinking in that manner, it wasn’t healthy or good.
“Do you mind if I turn on the radio? I like to listen to music while I eat.”
“Of course.” Patton confirmed, pouring soup into a porcelain bowl and placing it at the table for Jamie. The youthful looking man, it was still a shock that he was thirty-four, went over to the little radio on the counter and switched it on. The music playing was some sort of instrumental piano, but Jamie quickly changed the channel to something the sounded very angry and aggressive. The main singer was also for some reason screaming a lot. Yet Jamie nodded his small head joyfully as if it was the sweetest the tune in existence. Patton tried to listen along peacefully, but he wasn’t able to get comfortable in the sound.
“I actually feel like eating in the sitting room today.” He announced filling a bowl for himself, turning off the stove and covering the pot with the lid to keep it warm.
“Oh, okay. I’ll see you later then.” He waved, although a bit awkwardly. Patton felt a twinge of guilt and almost decided to stay, but the screaming singer got angrier.
Patton waved goodbye to him as well and walked towards the door, passing Ahmed as he did and pointing out his meal that was waiting for him at the table.
The sitting room was dark and empty, cut off from the outside light by heavy curtains that were practically nailed to the walls, much like the rest of the house. The room was small compared to all the others, only slightly larger than his. The hardwood floors were covered in an old Victorian style carpet in the center of the room, while the rest surrounding it was left bare. The furniture consisted of a loveseat sofa, arm chair, and a chaise longue all circulating around a long coffee table. Across the two, right walls were lines of bookshelves, from where he got his encyclopedia of flowers all jam packed with various forms of literature covering the dark blue wallpaper behind them. In the left corner was a smaller bar table accompanied by two stools and a wine cabinet behind it, not necessary filled with just wine.
While the room in itself was indeed beautiful, it lacked any color or life. Whenever he was home, Logan often spent his time here in the dark reading by the lamplight. From what Patton has gathered from his time at the manor, Logan was a very busy and reclusive man who barely had any time to himself, and if he did he would spend it in the solitude of his study or this room. Much of the mansion was left in the dark due to the order he had apparently given out three years ago according to what Jamie had told him when he asked about the curtains.
Placing his bowl on the coffee table, Patton walked over to the windows and drew them open as wide as he could, letting the light spill in. Even with the sky being riddled with rain, a new spirit was allowed into the sitting room. He walked over to the bookshelves and peered over the titles of mostly non-fiction and educational stories, looking for something to spend his afternoon with. Finally he found a story about ancient heroes and decided to settle with that, always enjoying a good tale of heroic deeds.
Patton took a pillow from the couch and placed it in the ground before the coffee table, taking a seat there instead of on one of on the sofa or chair. Opening the book on the table, he sipped on his soup as he read to himself. The book switched from story to story each chapter, but he found himself really enjoying a story about a woman named Mulan. He was astounded how many of the stories turned out to be sad in the end, such as for Jeanne D’Arc, but their lives were so honored.
All of these heroes had lived hundreds, or thousands, of years ago, their accomplishments being passed down into legend. Patton never knew people like this ever existed. Brave men and women who fought for their people and country; it sounded unbelievable and unrealistic. Why would someone care for their country so much to risk it all? It sounded almost mystical.
After an hour of peacefully reading, and occasionally difficulties with words he couldn’t read or understand, his soup long finished and forgotten, Elise crept in.
“Mr. Sanders, a letter has been sent to you by the young master.” She said briskly, shoving a letter down on the table in front of him.
“Oh, what is it about?” Patton inquired and turned towards her, closing his book.
“It hasn’t been open yet so I do not know, obviously.”
He shrunk back at her words, but nodded at her in apology, taking the letter into his hands. “Perhaps you should sit on the sofa.” Elise said backhandedly as she stepped out.
Patton fidgeted in slight humiliation and sat up of the couch, putting the pillow back into the placement he took it from. He looked down at the letter in his hand, addressed specifically to him, sent from his superior. Ripping the corner, Patton ungracefully tore the envelope open and pulled out a piece of parchment from the inside.
Salutations, Mr. Patton Sanders,
I am writing you in regards of an important and classified issue that is held with the utmost regard. What I am about to ask you I ask in trust that you will keep classified between only our two entities. Over the past weeks that I have been in our nation’s capital I have gone under intense research into the origin and history of The Stacks Experiment Initiative, or TSEI as it is called here. However I have hit a roadblock as I have discovered that most all of the records on the TSEI are missing from the Senatorial Archives. I am due back in a month, but I fear that it will not be enough time for me to finish my research. That is why I am requesting that you reconnect with you old neighbor who served in the military, I believe that she will have some of the answers I need. If for whatever reason you are not able to do so, I expect you to be the one to provide me with any information I may request. I do not have more than an educated hunch that the TSEI somehow ties into the nation’s economic depression, and that solving the issue of The Stacks will only benefit the entirety of the public. I am relying on solely you to help me fix this, as I have no other routes of which to turn to.
Cordially, Logan Winchester
The chef held his breath the entire way through without realizing it, and then let out an enormous exhale of air as he read the last line. He didn’t understand what it all meant or what was being asked of him. Why would Logan be researching the Stacks, what did he mean by the records being missing and why would Patton being his last option to turn to? He trembled lightly in a perplexed awe, a mix of excitement and terror, his mind hurtling in direction it had never been to. Whatever it meant, whatever Logan was attempting, whatever his purpose, he saw opportunity in this letter. The senator was asking for help to understand the Stacks so he could fix society, maybe if Patton was able to mold his focus further onto the state of the Stacks in its own right he could persuade him to adjust the law surrounding them.
But wouldn’t that be deceiving Logan and using him? He’s putting his trust in me after all.
He faltered a bit at that thought, not at all enjoying the prospect of taking advantage of his trust or lying to him. However, what Logan desired was for Patton to help him fix the state of society, and Patton wants the Stacks to be part of that society. If he could merely show him the mistreatment in the Stacks then it may be enough to persuade him by itself. The people born there were just as much of a citizen as any other born in a proper district, this could be the way they finally receive their rights.
If I agree to this, I risk the chance of being caught and being sent back, or worse, being executed.
Patton pondered heavily on this for a while, trying to see the correct path he should take. He could be safe, say no to Logan, and keep his job and family safe, while nothing in the Stacks changes. Or, he could agree and guide Logan through his journey, steering him in the path he desires and possibly aim for a betterment of all Stackers, including his son, Virgil, who was still trapped there. Patton thought back on all of the news updates, the rocketing crimes, the sworn promises of the law enforcement to bring him to justice. Virgil would always be at risk so long as he committed theft, and he’d never stop stealing until he was free of Damien’s control; but with the amount of debt he owed, it would take him more than a lifetime to pay it all back. Because Virgil never borrowed a specific amount of money from the crook, no, it was something more precious than that.
His eyes caught the title of the book on the table, reminding him of the countless amounts of people who put everything on the line for what they believed in. He had his answer.
Virgil had traded his life for Patton’s own, metaphorically and literally. It was time that Patton did the same.
…
The knock came tentatively at his front door, cautious and careful to maintain the secrecy in which they were called in. Roman, still suited up from his long day of work, peered through the peaky hole prior to opening the door, allowing Talyn access into his home. He had called them in on his way back from the office, eager to start planning the layout of his scheme. Roman could tell they were still concerned from their previous conversation yesterday, but had still agreed to come nonetheless.
Roman beckoned them in, guiding them to dining table in the foyer where he had all of his papers, intel, and newspaper clippings laid out as leads for the case. Talyn sighed sarcastically when they say it all, setting their bag on top of the table and papers. Roman whined as they did this, complaining that they had messed with his algorithm.
“Oh yes, I can see you’re definitely not obsessed.” Talyn mocked affectionately, plucking up a newspaper article on an alleged sighting of the man in question, the most recent of them all.
“It’s called being determined,” Roman sang, taking a sip from his coffee mug, handing one over to Talyn as well. They took the cup gratefully, swirling the liquid around as they regarded the work before them. He waited by their side as they gazed on with silent computation, committing everything they saw to memory and locating a route within a few minutes. “Do you have a plan?” He asked once she snapped her head back up, signaling that she had finished her assessment.
“From my analysis as the chief investigator of this case over the past two months, I’ve found that our guy doesn’t strike random houses, everything has a rhyme and a rhythm. The data here didn’t offer any more than what I already know-”
“Geez thanks.”
“-but it appears that all the targets are of well known holders of fortune. No small-time businesses that we know of have been hit up by this guy, nor have there been any jobs on uncharted shareholders. Still, there appears to be no other correlation between his victims other than them being rich and openly so. He also tends to favor working at night, meaning he most likely knows how to manipulate the darkness and stealth to his advantage. It would be useless to act in daylight hours.”
“So, are you saying we have a plan?”
“I’m saying I have a plan, but yes.” Talyn reached into their bag and pulled out a notepad and pen and began sketching out a formulated plot. “It’ll either take a while or work very quickly, there’s no clear way of predicting; but if I’m right, which I always am, this should get him in five days or less.”
Roman looked over their shoulder at the sketch work of childish looking doodles that were meant to be a serious scheme. He chuckled inwards at the cartoony look, finding the art style to be adorable.
“What do I have to do?” Roman questioned, abandoning his previous train of thought to focus on the bigger picture at hand. He felt a tingle underneath his skin at the prospect of finally being able to corner this tricky kid. Oh how close he had at last come.
Talyn smirked, their eyes filling with the shine that could only ever be brought through their love for complicated and dastardly strategy and the thrill of a chase. They were much like him in that regard. Nothing was more satisfying that bringing a villain to justice.
“What you I need to do is-”

accumulated wars and flights, (4/?)
After breakfast, Rohan retreats back to his workshop without so much as a thank you, leaving Kakyoin to finish the dishes by himself. He’s a strange one, if not so cruel as Kakyoin imagined. His house swings wildly between rooms of perfectly constructed order and beautiful showpieces to rooms stacked high with canvas and scrap, so overcrowded and haphazard as to be nearly impassable. Kakyoin woke early, his neck stiff from the night before, and wandered through the silent post-dawn house, contemplating the scope and width of his jail cell.
He’s cleaned the pantry and chased away the cobwebs, which is as much work as he cares to do in one day, so he leaves Rohan to his silent toil over his notebooks and heads out, Rohan’s money jingling in his bag. Rohan didn’t react when Kakyoin said he was going to take some money for supplies, which Kakyoin is taking as permission. It annoys him to have to be so blunt, as he would prefer politeness, but he’s not going to skulk and beg.
His bad mood lasts him through the walk into town and the first of his little errands before dissipating in the face of Morioh’s charm. Even in these circumstances, Kakyoin likes human towns. He likes the purposeful cut of human architecture, so different from nature’s haphazard beauty. He likes the little houses and the little market and all the fruits and vegetables sitting in their boxes, careful and neat, the product of a hundred little transactions. He likes the shops selling beautiful dresses and the shops selling simple cloths and hand-woven goods and the housewives bustling about with their bags. People greet him, people talk to him, and still he’s invisible, no one aware of who he is or what he’s done or all he’s lost.
It’s evening before he can make himself go back, his arms laden with cleaning supplies and groceries and a pack of books he couldn’t help but buy at the small bookstore in town. He’s only a block from the house when he catches a familiar scent on the wind, something that sets the alarms in the back of his head jangling. He freezes on the spot, looking around. There’s a young man coming up the sidewalk, his dark hair peculiarly arranged. He lifts his head, his pale eyes fixing on Kakyoin, and his nostrils flare. That’s when Kakyoin knows. Wolf.
“Fox,” the young man says. There’s a sword at his hip. For just a moment, Kakyoin sways under the assault of memory, the present day overtaken by the image of the past. Ten years ago, Jotaro looked almost exactly like the young man now approaching Kakyoin. He approached Kakyoin like this, with the same bold fearlessness, his hand ready at the hilt of his sword.
“What are you doing here?” the stranger demands. His eyes drop down to the money pouch at Kakyoin’s waist. “Did you steal that from Rohan?” The question jolts him back to the present, reminds him that he needs to run.
“I didn’t steal it,” he says, playing for time, trying to think of the fastest route to run out of town. He could fight and probably win against this pup, but he doesn’t want to damage the town. “Rohan gave it to me.”
“Why?”
“I’m his new assistant,” Kakyoin says.
“Oh!” To Kakyoin’s utter surprise, his opponent steps back and drops into a bow.
“I’m so sorry for the mistake!” he declares loudly, his face red, voice flustered. “I didn’t realize you’d been invited!”
“It’s… fine.” Kakyoin says carefully, still not sure if this is a ruse. “No harm done.”
“I apologize for the misunderstanding, and welcome you to our town. My name is Josuke Higashikata, and I’m the town watchman.” His face is red and flustered, erasing any previous resemblance to Jotaro.
“I’m Kakyoin Tenmei,” Kakyoin says, giving a fake first name. “I’ll be staying in town for a while, if it’s fine with you.” It would give him a convenient out to be discovered and have to flee, but he doesn’t really want to go. Not yet. There’s still a little tug at his magic, something calling him back to Rohan, and he knows he’s not done. Not yet.
Josuke is studying him.
“I don’t know anything about foxes,” he confesses. “You’re not planning to steal Rohan’s soul or anything, are you? If he has a soul.”
“I’m not that kind of fox,” Kakyoin assures him, thinking of the shattered lives and charred buildings left in Dio’s wake. “Actually, I owe him a favor, so I’m stuck working for him until I pay it off.” Josuke groans sympathetically.
“Rohan’s the worst,” he says. “He’s not making you do anything terrible, is he?” Josuke seems genuinely concerned. Kakyoin has to wonder how often Rohan brings some kind of wildly inappropriate new assistant into town.
“I only came in recently, but he seems more interested in his paintings than in me.”
“That sounds like Rohan, alright,” Josuke says. “He’s a jerk. When he found out I could turn into a wolf, it was all ‘Josuke, eat this weird meat’ and ‘Josuke, fight this random animal I released into the town’ and stuff like that. He even camped out outside my house for a few days.”
“He thinks I’m human,” Kakyoin says dryly. “Are there a lot of people like you in this town?”
“People like me? Oh, you mean…” Josuke winks ostentatiously, and Kakyoin can’t help but be grateful that there’s no one else on the street. “No, it’s only me. I inherited it from my old man, but he doesn’t live here. Don’t go picking a fight, though! Rohan’s not the only one in town with serious magic.”
“I’m just here for the groceries,” Kakyoin assures him. He doesn’t mind the human town, but he plans to approach it with caution. There are so many people, so close together, and everywhere the hum of magic, of the unexpected, and Kakyoin unable to defend himself with full range of his powers.
“Well, I’ll-” Josuke says, and then stops short. Rohan is coming down the sidewalk.
“Leave my assistant alone, you miscreant,” he says to Josuke.
“I’m not bothering him,” Josuke protests, but Rohan ignores him. He slips past Josuke, grabbing Kakyoin’s sleeve, and takes a step towards the house. Kakyoin balks at being steered like this, pulling back, but Rohan isn’t even looking at him.
“Your hair is so terrible it should be outlawed,” he tells Josuke, and breaks into a run, dragging Kakyoin behind him.
“What- Rohan-” Kakyoin protests, and then he looks behind him. Josuke’s form has begun to twist and blur at the edges as the transition from human to wolf begins. There’s a black haze twisting around him, and Kakyoin can smell the sharp taste of rage on the wind. He runs.
He and Rohan reach the house only moments before Josuke. Rohan scrambles for his notebook, tears a piece of paper out and slams it on the door. There’s a boom that shakes the whole house as something crashes into the front door, and then a deranged howl, but the front door holds. NO ENTRY, reads the paper Rohan stuck to the door. Kakyoin starts to laugh. He laughs so hard his shoulders start to shake and his wounds from the day before begin to ache, and he has to steady himself on a table to keep from falling over. Rohan is laughing too, a manic grin on his face as Josuke throws himself against the front of Rohan’s shop, his hulking form shaking the foundations of the house. He turns towards Kakyoin, his face full of delighted conspiracy.
“Welcome to Morioh,” he says.

Impact Of Covid-19 on UK Housebuilding
New Figures Show Impact Of Covid-19 On Housebuilding Rates
Quarterly housing starts and completions lowest since 2000
Industry calls for assistance to construction sector
Wednesday 30 September 2020 – The number of new build homes started or completed in England between April and June 2020 fell to their lowest levels since the year 2000as Covid-19 hit the construction industry, according to new figures published today.
The figures also show, despite Covid, a longer-term decline in housing starts and completions, with the number of homes started or completed in the year to June 2020 also showing a sharp fall.
According to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the indicators of new housing supply figures should be regarded as a leading indicator of overall supply.
They show:
The number of dwellings where building work has started on site was 15,930 in April to June 2020 – a 52% decrease when compared to the last quarter. It also follows a recent trend of a slowdown in growth with six of the last six quarters showing a decrease. Starts are 67% below their March quarter 2007 peak and are 7% below the previous trough in the March quarter of 2009. It is the lowest quarterly starts figure in the seasonally adjusted time series (which begins in the year 2000).
There were 121,630 estimated new build dwellings starts in the year to June 2020, a 26 per cent decrease compared to the year to June 2019.
The number of dwellings completed on site was 15,390 in April to June 2020. This is a 62% decrease compared to the last quarter and 64% below their level in the same quarter a year ago. Completions are now 67% below their peak in the March quarter 2007 and 37% below the previous trough in March quarter 2013. It is the lowest quarterly completions figure in the seasonally adjusted time series (which begins in the year 2000).
An estimated 147,180 new build dwellings were completed in the year to June 2020, a decrease of 15 per cent compared to the year to June 2019.
Clive Docwra, managing director of property and construction consultancy McBains said:
“Today’s statistics bear out the huge impact that Covid-19 – and in particular the Spring lockdown – has had on housebuilding rates.
“The government target of building a million new homes in the new five years was always going to be a steep challenge, but the pandemic has dealt a heavy blow to that ambition.
“The industry is now facing a double-whammy – trying to recover from the impact of Covid but also suffering from the uncertainty over a Brexit deal – with investors holding off putting money into new developments until the picture on a withdrawal agreement becomes clearer.
“The Government will no doubt point to its recent planning White Paper as the answer to building more homes, saying that it will mean ‘permission in principle’ will be given to developments on land designated for renewal to speed-up building, but the uncertainty and resulting fluctuating values driven by Covid and Brexit are reducing the incentive on developers to build in the short term.
“The government could address this by temporarily staggering or deferring Section 106 planning obligations – where developers are asked to provide contributions for community infrastructure – so that developers are encouraged to complete housebuilding projects as soon as possible.”

UK Residential Market News
Rental Sector Strength Comment
We post comment below in response to the RICS monthly residential market survey.
Elisabeth Kohlbach, CEO of Skwire comments: “Doom and gloom surrounding the news that the UK residential market is set for a ‘bust’ in the coming months overlooks a bright spot in a major segment of the residential market – the rental sector.
“The PRS sector is a growing part of the UK’s housing mix and the demand for this part of the market is not going away. Moreover, with lenders introducing a range of restrictions to cope with the spike in demand for mortgages following the announcement of stamp duty relief, many would-be buyers are struggling to get on the ladder and will no doubt turn to the rental market once again.
“While traditional destinations for BTR investors, such as London, may no longer be as attractive as remote workers flock to towns and cities beyond the capital, investors should look to the regions, which offer an exciting and untapped opportunity. Institutional investors should look beyond the traditional high density city-centre developments and seize the opportunity to tap into a rich pool of existing stock across the UK.”

UK house prices rise in July
Halifax House Price Index for July 2020
Halifax has this morning released its House Price Index for July, showing that house prices have risen month-on-month and year-on-year in reaction to the Stamp Duty Land Tax holiday introduced earlier in the month.
While this is positive news for the sector, can this momentum be maintained?
Jamie Johnson, CEO of FJP Investment “Today’s House Price Index shows that the stamp duty holiday is having its desired effect, encouraging buyers and sellers to make a cautious return back to the property market. The release of pent-up demand is driving up house prices, slowly making up for the losses that were incurred at the height of the pandemic.
“The big question now is whether this initial burst in activity can be maintained over the next few months. Will house prices continue to grow; or will the momentum fizzle out? There is no clear answer at present. Nonetheless, today’s House Price Index makes the case for cautious optimism.
“Importantly, I do not believe the coronavirus has dampened investor demand for UK real estate. Property’s resilience and ability to quickly recover any losses in value in times of crises makes it a top asset class for both domestic and overseas buyers. Once there is greater certainty about the future of COVID-19 and the post-pandemic recovery, I anticipate buyer demand to return in full force.”

Commenting on the Chancellors ‘mini budget’, Tom Fyans, campaigns and policy director at CPRE, the countryside charity, said:
‘While we have seen promising starts on energy efficiency and shoring up rural hospitality businesses, the Chancellor has missed major opportunities to begin building back better when it comes to transport and housing investment.’

Kush Rawal, Director of Residential Investment from Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing comments: “We welcome the Chancellor’s stamp duty holiday, which makes shared ownership homes an even more attractive option for people looking to own their own home. Removing stamp duty from almost all initial share purchases means that key workers will be able to buy a shared ownership home with as little as two months of rent as their deposit.”

Housebuilding Rates Fall – Even Before Coronavirus Impacts
Thursday 26th of March 2020 – The number of new build homes started and completed in the last quarter of 2019 fell below government targets, according to new government figures published today – and the industry says the coronavirus pandemic is set to impact these further.
According to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the new build dwellings figures should be regarded as a leading indicator of overall housing supply.
Today’s figures show that:
On a quarterly basis, new build dwelling starts in England were estimated at 34,260 (seasonally adjusted) in the latest quarter, an 11 per cent decrease compared to the previous 3 months and a 17 per cent decrease on a year earlier. Completions were estimated at 44,980 (seasonally adjusted), a 1 per cent decrease from the previous quarter and 3 per cent higher than a year ago.
Annual new build dwelling starts totalled 151,020 in the year to December 2019, a 10 per cent decrease compared with the year to December 2018. During the same period, completions totalled 178,800, an increase of 9 per cent compared with last year
All starts between October and December 2019 are now 99 per cent above the trough in the March quarter 2009 and 30 per cent below the March quarter 2007 peak. All completions between October and December 2019 are 78 per cent above the trough in the March quarter 2013 and 7 per cent below the March quarter 2007 peak.
Clive Docwra, Managing Director of leading construction consulting and design agency McBains, said:
“The government’s ambitious housebuilding target – delivering a million homes in the next five years – was always going to be extremely challenging, and the latest statistics bear this out. However, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic will mean this is now virtually impossible.
“Many sites are empty, supply chains have been disrupted and multi-million pounds worth of private investment is on hold for the foreseeable future. That will knock back housebuilding rates months, if not years.
“The government has already announced an unprecedented package of measures to help support business, but once we’ve turned the tide on the virus further help, such as tax incentives, will be needed to get the UK building again.”

UK Government Approach to Housing Shortage – Budget Reaction
The UK Chancellor announced a raft of measures aimed at significantly increasing levels of home building and “reviving the British dream of home ownership”.
Key amongst the Chancellor’s statements were the abolition of Stamp Duty Land Tax on homes under £300k for First Time Buyers, £15.3 billion of new financial support for house building over the next five years (which includes money for the government to buy land as well as delivering supporting infrastructure) and more money to help SME builders.
This is in addition to the £10bn extra funding already announced for the English version of the Help to Buy shared equity scheme.
Some reactions to this week’s UK Budget from key built environment representatives:
“In essence the abolition of Stamp duty is the kind of sweeping move we needed to provide hope at the bottom end of the market and hopefully helping towards the aspirational 300K homes per year. As an employer, seeing younger architects get a foothold on the housing ladder is a strong hope and this is surely a welcome hand-out to bring the youth vote around for the Conservatives.
We would like to see more certainty on how the £44Bn figure to aid housebuilding will actually materialise into capital expenditure from Central or Local Government. The budget won’t solve the disconnect in planning, unless some of that cash is pumped into increasing resources in planning departments.”
Graham Hickson-Smith, Commercial Director, 3DReid
“It’s good to see the government taking the housing crisis seriously with the final quarter of the speech devoted to this one subject, an impressive commitment to extra spending of £44bn over five years and the headline grabbing finale of the reduction in stamp duty. The devil though will, as always be in the detail.
The lifting of HRA caps is good in principle but there are no details at all, while the £34m for skills training sounds like a drop in the ocean when we are faced with a huge likely loss of construction workers post-Brexit. Other measures announced include the review to be chaired by Oliver Letwin which may, helpfully, lay to rest the myth that land banking is a serious problem – most developers being concerned to turn over their capital as fast as possible rather than tie it up in dormant sites.
Finally there is the reduction in stamp duty for first time buyers, which will undoubtedly appeal to younger voters, but the same measure would probably be much more effective, economically, as an incentive to retired people to downsize, releasing under-occupied houses into the market.”
Richard Morton, Richard Morton Architects
“We really welcome the Chancellor’s moves to boost the supply of badly-needed new homes. Policies which aim to lower the cost of land and bring forward more building sites, particularly in urban areas well served by public transport, are good news – and preferable to policies which make it easier for some people to afford high house prices.
But all of this new housing needs to be sustainable, in environmental terms, and here the government’s policies are seriously lacking. It wants five new garden cities, but has said virtually nothing about what defines them.
The Budget has not addressed the critical need for green and low-carbon infrastructure and low-impact homes, not just on green fields, but everywhere. Nor has this budget addressed the need to upgrade and retrofit millions of our existing energy-inefficient homes.”

UK Housing Expansion
Homebuilding in Great Britain
The Ministry of Defence has put 12 sites on the block to provide land for up to 15,000 new homes.
Government Defence Minister Mark Lancaster said the land sale was expected to raise £500m, which will be ploughed back into frontline defence budgets, reports https://ift.tt/19warTM.
The sale is the first tranche of more ambitious plans to support the government’s ambition to build 160,000 homes by 2020.
The MOD, which owns around 1% of all UK land, plans to slash the size of its built estate by nearly a third, with its current holdings stretching to 452,000 hectares.
As part of that plan, the Ministry has committed to generating £1bn through land sales during this parliament and contributing up to 55,000 homes.

UK Government Design Advisory Panel – New Housing Design Quality
Chair of RIBA Housing Group, Andy Von Bradsky, represented RIBA this week on the government’s Design Advisory Panel. The panel was set up under the coalition government and has been re-formed by the current government to advise on key policy issues, reports the RIBA.
The RIBA has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement that a Design Advisory Panel is being set up to ‘set the bar on housing design across the country’ and is looking forward to working with other panel members.
David Cameron announced the creation of the panel this week when he confirmed the go ahead for a new Starter Homes scheme, though the panel will inform government policies on housing design nationally.

The DCLG has already confirmed that panel members will include Sir Terry Farrell, classicist Sir Quinlan Terry and philosopher Roger Scruton alongside nominated representatives from the RIBA, RTPI, Design Council and Create Streets.
The panel will be chaired by ministers, so there are high hopes that it will have a genuine influence on policy. The Government says the panel will act as a sounding board, so that the housing and design industry can discuss policy issues with ministers and senior government officials. Its remit will cover:
Emerging housing and planning policy to ensure that good design is considered and embedded from the outset. Delivery of housing and planning policy to ensure that good design is achieved through Government’s programmes. Emerging industry issues and barriers to good design in housing delivery.

‘We welcome the response from Government to the Farrell review and our own recommendation to have more design advice available to Government when shaping policy.’ said RIBA Head of External Affairs Anna Scott-Marshall.
‘It is encouraging that the Government, industry and other professionals will work in collaboration to ensure that we build the right kinds of homes in the right kinds of places.’ Farrell is also enthusiastic and said the panel has the potential to make a real difference.
‘It builds on the recommendations of the Farrell Review (https://ift.tt/JuZyFn), which highlighted the need for more proactive planning and better placemaking as we attempt to address the housing crisis, with radically higher priority given to landscape, sustainability and the public realm.’

Have you noticed that SEO is becoming more difficult? There’s an increasing belief that Google is a black box that none of us truly understand. The fundamentals of search optimisation are widely accepted but, as many websites successfully tick these boxes, do we truly understand what it is that pushes certain sites to perform above others? I have a theory that we are optimising for a behaviour that is becoming less and less frequent. Search, as we understand it, is becoming less common. The way users interact with Google is moving away from purely searching, and more into discovery, as Google pushes information to users, rather than waiting for them to pull it. If this is the case, then we need to increase our understanding of discovery, how it applies to Google, and adapt our SEO tactics to look to Discovery Engine Optimisation instead. If you would prefer to watch me talk about this rather than read about it then you can see a video of me talking about this very subject at SearchStars 2018, here: What is ‘Discovery’? Discovery and search may appear to be the same thing at first glance since both involve finding new information and the answer to questions you may have. However, search is an active method whilst discovery is much more passive. Search refers to the act of a user having a specific query (or set of queries) which they use to get single answers for each question they have. This means they typically either find their answer in the search results or click through to a domain, their search is then complete. Meanwhile, discovery involves more of a journey as it is not based on isolated queries. Instead, discovery may start with a single search, but it can also start with a prompt directly from Google (or other systems), and lead to finding more information and journeying through to related details too. Google as a Discovery Engine Google is traditionally known as a Search Engine, and its primary use matches the definition. However, over the years it’s been called many other things like a personal assistant, answer engine and even just a directory. So why are we all so confused about what Google does? Google is changing frequently, updating the way users find information within it and as SEOs, we try to name these and understand them each time there is a big shift. Here are the main reasons I believe that Google is becoming a Discovery Engine: Neural Matching The Google Feed The Topic Layer Activity Cards An emphasis on entities Neural Matching One of the first announcements for Google’s 20th anniversary was their adoption of neural matching into the algorithm. Neural Matching is currently used in around 30% of queries, which is only increasing through the use of artificial intelligence to grow its understanding. Neural Matching is Google’s way of knowing what it is that searchers really mean when they can’t find the words, it’s a step further in Google’s mission to understand the intent of searchers. Danny Sullivan’s example of searching ‘why does my TV look strange?’ provides an interesting result which is really for the question ‘what is the soap opera effect?’ He says this happens thanks to Super Synonyms for connecting the information the user is looking for with the information which currently exists. This is breaking down a previous problem where websites produce content with jargon and exacting terminology, whilst the average consumer doesn’t know the specialist language. Neural matching is helping users to discover results and terminology they didn’t know they were looking for. It is likely, but unproven, that neural matching will be based on the method outlined in Google’s research on Deep Relevance Ranking. Their paper outlines a new way of ranking websites based purely upon the search query and the information on the web page, different to other methods which involve looking at network structures and links between content. This may not feel like a stark contrast but it enables a more intelligent understanding of the information returned on each query. The Google Feed Those using the Google app on mobile will be used to seeing suggested information and stories below their search option, this is known as the Google Feed. In September 2018, the rebrand of this feature took place and became ‘Discover’ – a fairly big indication that Google is focusing on discovery. They’ve also announced that we’ll begin to see this discovery functionality on the mobile web interface too, starting in the US but soon to roll out to other countries. As you can see from these images of Google Discover, the information is split into categories which can be browsed (much like Twitter moments) that Google believes you will be interested in. If you’re on Google to look at the latest news or your favourite brands, information about them will automatically appear here in Discover without requiring the user to even undertake a search. The Topic Layer If you’re following trends in how Google works you’ll be aware of the Knowledge Graph, the web of connected information that fuels Google’s answer boxes and understanding of information on the web. The Topic Layer is the next stage of developing this, sitting above the Knowledge Graph answers, by helping to build connections between each piece of ‘knowledge’ and preempting the information a user would want next. This has added a new level of customisation to answer boxes, with the cards displayed in search results being unique to the topic displayed instead of generic by vertical. This is best seen in Google’s example of searching for dog breeds: As you can see, the options which appear on this knowledge graph card are not the same across both breeds of dog. That’s because the topic layer here has injected the most relevant categories related to each breed, rather than just a generic ‘dog breed’ information pack. This means that users are more likely to discover the information that they will need next following their initial query – much more useful than a standard card where they may need to perform another search to get more specific information. Activity Cards Activity Cards are a way in which Google is acknowledging that searches do not occur in isolation, frequently they are part of a longer planning process and require a user to repeat the same search multiple times over a certain period. The new activity cards will allow users to resume previous searches they’ve done, as well as store result into collections – perfect for planning a trip or arranging an event. Within these collections, Google may also recommend information to you and help users to discover more information around the topic they are researching without additional queries. This takes the search process away from single interactions and becomes more of a journey to undertake. Entities Let’s consider that entities can be domains and non-domains. A non-domain entity will be something like a TV show, celebrity or popular brand, this means that their value online is made up of more than just the domain but also includes things like their social profiles, additional authoritative sites about them, offline information and the frequency they’re searched for, alongside other factors. If we only optimise for the domain in these cases then we’re only optimising a sub-entity of a much larger piece. To apply this to Google, the strength of the entity will be related to how well the domain (sub-entity) ranks, as well as impact elements like voice search, answer boxes and other forms of discovery. As Dave Davis said: “The idea that we can push our rankings forward through entity associations, and not just links, is incredibly powerful and versatile.” How to Optimise for Discovery If we move forward with the hypothesis that Google is becoming a Discovery Engine, it’s then important to adapt our tactics to work towards this type of behaviour. Moving away from a focus on Search Engine Optimisation and into Discovery Engine Optimisation. Here’s how: Understand How Traditional Ranking Factors are Evolving Much of the information we’ve discussed above leads to the conclusion that we will soon need a new way of optimising. Traditionally, we’d look to factors such as external links, site architecture or keywords, but the way these are being assessed is shifting. As Google is looking more to entities and if the content really provides the best, unique answer for users, so we can begin to look more to this instead. If Google introduces its Deep Relevance Matching Model into the algorithm, be this through neural matching or another way, our work will need to be much more concentrated on understanding user intent and optimising for that instead. Look at Entire Journeys As discovery limits the number of progressive searches that take place and replaces them with either direct browsing or a single search followed by browser behaviour, we need to understand what the next query would have been. This means connecting the information, which Google would then want to provide to a user, by understanding common patterns and journeys which are seen. Structure your Content for Answer Boxes With fewer searches taking place, the prominence of answer boxes (and how they interact with the Topic Layer) has increased significantly. It’s crucial to write content in a structure which is suitable for holding these positions. Use Structured Markup Structured markup is widely acknowledged as being an important part of ranking and of Google understanding your content. If Google understands the content and purpose of your site, it will be able to push the information back to consumers and understand you better as an entity. Be User Centric Google openly talks about how they adapt to benefit users, helping them on their journey. Yet, as websites and businesses, very few of us are truly user-centric. It’s time to shift our entire approaches to put users at the centre, not just users who spend money. Deserve to Rank This has been the case for some time but it can’t be stressed enough, as the importance of the easier-to-manipulate factors decreases, it’s up to websites now to deserve to rank. This means giving users answers to their questions, providing unique details and being authoritative in your sector. No longer can you get away with producing quickly spun content, instead it’s about investing time in quality and detail in all content offerings. Watch out for our upcoming posts on the changing face of search to understand some of the tactics you can implement today to prepare your site for Google’s changes. Critical Evaluation of Project
My Final Major Project Submission is presented in the form of a dissertation entitled Inter-Disciplinary Practices, the relationship between art and architecture which is a study that uses practical and pragmatic research to investigate branding within the art industry, and the relationship between the different disciplines contained within the creative professional sector (The Interdisciplinary).
The two disciplines that my research focuses on are art and architecture as these are integral within the context of my practice. I decided to approach the major project in a written format because I found it to be the best way to communicate my thoughts and ideas was through documenting research that I could then look back on after my masters when thinking about how I will conduct practice beyond Art School. My research question came about because throughout my master’s degree I have been producing work that is heavily influenced by architecture and the making of structures which meant that I had to develop many methodologies and ideologies that architects would utilize within projects. However, this presented me with a dilemma in terms of identity because I couldn’t decide whether I was playing the role of an architect or whether I should consider myself as an architect I didn’t know where to place my-self and my professional practice which I feel can sometimes hold back the work as it is important as a practitioner to know what societal role you wish to adopt in order to produce the best work and not knowing what role you are playing can make this more difficult as it creates a mental block which limits the projects and ideas. The first sections of my dissertation looked at branding and the Interdisciplinary. For these sections I read several books whereby artists look at the philosophy of branding, identity and the Inter-displinary I found mark Rothko’s book The Artist’s reality- Philosophies of Art by Mark Rothko (2004) and Elizabeth Fishers book on not knowing how artists think (2013) were very informative when thinking about branding in the art industry especially when discussing what the term artist means and the preconceptions that it brings. After which I wanted to better understand what the contemporary views were on navigating the interdisciplinary, I therefore conducted a series of questionnaires with localized artists. I also considered the artists of the renaissance period who worked in multiple fields like Leonardo Da Vinci.
I selected materials through reading and research which informed my chosen area of study some of the research was sourced online when applicable like the case studies at the end of the essay as the practitioners are contemporary meaning that most of the relevant information is found digitally rather than as published books, there were many books on Ai Wei Wei however they mainly spoke of his sculptural work rather than his architectural projects.
I chose my display by looking at other printed dissertations and how they are bound and considered different papers to use I choose to go for a spiral binding with silk paper as I think that this gives a professional look and feel giving the reader a comfortable experience both visually and in terms of texture which fits with the context of the work which is a research paper.
My decisions were informed by a series of debates, ideas and they were also informed by different strands of research. I made decisions logically by analysing ideas and information at each stage, as the project progressed for example, I found that architects must be qualified in order to use the term architect in one of the sections whereby I then researched the pathways to become an architect through education.
I wanted my dissertation to communicate a good understanding of branding within art, identity and the relationship between art and architecture. But also, how other artists/ interdisciplinary practitioners have navigated these shifts in practice and identity when operating in multiple fields. I want other practitioners that read my study who have similar questions in relation to crossing disciplines and the inter-disciplinary to be able to gain greater knowledge about these subject areas and how they can conduct pragmatic research to determine how they might navigate their practice.
My methods for writing my dissertation were informed by my previous written projects which I have undertaken throughout my four years of study most notably my research in practice project which I undertook during the maters which helped me to develop my style of writing to a high level. I started by determining my research question and the themes which are relevant to explore by conducting a series of bubble maps and initial research. Which then assisted me in determining how I would plan my time. I spent the first 4 weeks reading literature around my area of study and researching my topic, I then structured the further 8 weeks by planning how many words I should write per week whilst still conducting, further research, reading and conducting interviews/questionnaires. I also made sure that I left two weeks for the editing, printing and binding my dissertation.
I tested my dissertation at each stage of writing by reading my essay and rewriting/editing meaning that I had several drafts before reaching the final printed study to make sure that the writing was as strong as possible. I also asked my peers to read my essay and had meetings with Carla Hammer who assists with written projects, she was able to give me advice on referencing, Layout and structure when writing a dissertation at masters level I found her help to be invaluable especially when writing appendicitis, referencing and producing a table of figures which I previously had a limited knowledge of.
My methods for researching were reading, conducting interviews and doing online searches on google and through summons which I then narrowed down as I progressed to the most relevant and significant pieces of information. This proved successful as it meant that I could find a variety of different sources and strands of informative research which can often be difficult to locate with such a broad subject matter therefore I think looking in multiple areas for research strands was the best way of achieving a good body of research. I made sure that I was conducting research simultaneously across multiple areas and contexts to ensure good time management. Whilst reading I made sure to use post its as a way of book-marking significant pages so that I could find previously located important information easily without having to re-read the whole book which again I felt was helpful in organizing my research and ensuring that I was conducting research efficiently and effectively.
My dissertation articulates relevant ideas through a series of debates and practical research like the use of interview/questionnaire transcripts, I have also looked at information in the sections where I discuss the term architect and architecture education which was supplied by various institutions and government bodies to inform my research. During the last section I also conducted case studies based on two different practitioners that operate across art-architecture disciplines. By conducting research in a variety of ways it has helped me to construct a body of knowledge that can be navigated in a logical way which flows well and is well supported. I don’t think I would have been able to have conducted a study which is as in-depth without the use of multiple research approaches because the subject is so philosophical and complex that it needs to be well supported by many relevant outlets, ideas and debates.
I think that the dissertation successfully articulates my research question because it gives a deeper understanding of how we brand our selves in art using terms like art/architect but also the fact that nobody is just an artist but we operate in multiple contexts or fields (The inter-disciplinary) and it is breaking down the particulars & similarities of these disciplines that helps us to determine who we are as practitioners and where we can take our practice next by utilizing relevant knowledge, debates and research in a pragmatic way. One of the most important elements within my project would be the opinions of others using Interviews and questionnaires left me with a series of transcripts which I utilized within my essay and research which has allowed me to collaborate with other practitioners when conducting my study, which was highly informative in determining how other people feel about working in the interdisciplinary and how it can be navigated in different ways. This is important because there are a lot of artists that have similar questions and ideas around identity and it is good to consider these opinions as they can inform, support and even sometimes contrast my findings which I think is of significance when conducting an in-depth impactful study. Within the Mid-section of my essay I looked at the similarities and differences between art and architecture which enabled me to think about how the two practices are similar so that I can determine if an artist has the skills and knowledge that is required to become and architect this section was informed by both literature and online sources. After discussing the relationship between the two facets I determined that artists present many skills that an architect must have in order to conduct a successful practice so I therefore questioned the term architect like I did in the first section of the essay with the term artist to figure out if I can adopt this term to form my identity. However, I found that the word architect is protected by law and you cannot use this term without being qualified through architecture education. This therefore led me to looking at architectural education in greater which was mainly informed by online research sources studying different architecture courses, institutions and the knowledge that they provide. I found the Royal British Institute of architects to be significant when looking at architecture education as they are the government body which provides the certification required to become a qualified architect in the uk.
When Identifying the role an artist could play in an architectural practice, I found the book entitled de-Architecture to be highly relevant especially page 50 onwards where Wines discusses the advantages of visual communication within architecture which is currently lacking in modern buildings of which he says could be better communicated by artists. (J,Wines, 1987).This was significant as it shows that there are benefits for artists working in a discipline like architecture which must be noted when considering the role of an architect. Studying Assemble and Ai Wei Wei have been very informative in relation to my practice as they work within art and architecture creating innovative projects through case studies I was able to get a good understanding of how they brand themselves, how they conduct practice and the importance of collaboration that exists in both art and architecture which I can utilize going forward when considering where to take my practice next. Like forming a collective between artists and architects or work between the disciplines like Ai Wei Wei. I found the art-architecture complex (H, Foster, 2011) and the Art and architecture a place between (J,rendell,2006) when discussing the relationship between art and architecture and how they have been used to collaboratively to produce thought provoking contemporary public art I also used a series of books to help strengthen my practical skills the main book being 15 methods: 20 Questions Interviews with UK Art and Design Educators(2013). In helping me to form questions for interviews and to help strengthen my writing by looking at how other educators talk about art and ask questions in an interview format which has been beneficial in strengthening my writing and commination skills.
I would say that my dissertation is unique because it brings together thoughts, ideas, opinions and research in a way that has a logical trajectory with a key goal to establish where I should go next. I think that there is limited knowledge about how artists think cognitively about their practice beyond their making it is under-documented or the public doesn’t have access to it, but I think that needs to change as the art sector is becoming ever more diverse therefore we must have a better understanding of the operational roles contained within it and how they can be navigated.
It contributes to the field of art-based research in showing how a practitioner can effectively navigate their practice by considering opinions and debates formed by many practitioners to inform findings about how contemporaries can form their identity through research in a logical pragmatic way.
If I had to change anything, I would probably conduct even more interviews with practitioners although these can be quite hard to set up because most professionals have very busy schedules meaning it can take months to organise talks, but this is something that I can explore in further projects to further develop my research. I would have also liked to have conducted further case studies however I feel like having too many would have made them less in-depth, but this is again something I can tackle after the project without the time constrains and word limit that the 12,000-word dissertation presents.
I have drawn independent conclusions by reflecting upon each piece of research therefore forming my opinion about how art-architecture practices can be best navigated by an artist and at the end of the essay where I concluded my studies by looking at how I should progress based on the research I conducted.
I think that the dissertation was successful in communicating key knowledge and ideas on the relationship of art/architecture and the Inter-disciplinary. It is logical and easy to read which is one of its biggest successes I often find research papers can be overwhelming, but I think that the logical order and structure makes the information easy to digest and look back upon at ease. Another success would be it’s use of multiple debates and opinions about working within art and operating practice because these prove very informative when considering contemporary societal structures like art and architecture which can be reflected upon in the future.
I would say that the main weakness of the project would be the fact that the notion of branding and the relationship of art and architecture is such a broad subject matter which contains many different complex strands of applicable knowledge that can take many years to fully understand so I would say the limited time frame of three months would be the biggest weakness as you can only do a certain amount of research in three months. However, I have broadened my knowledge to a high level which can be utilized within my professional practice and the subject is something that I will no doubt explore further after university as it is integral to the context of my work and my identity within the creative sector.
When conducting research, I considered ethical issues for example when doing questionnaires and interviews I made sure that I had the consent of the participant to use the research within a written document and to inform my research. I did this through consent forms which required the participant to sign and tick that they understood where the findings would be used.
I have considered the audience within the display of the dissertation by making sure it flows logically making it easy to read and ensuring that it was comfortable for the reader to hold and spend time with as I want the document to be used in a practical manner to gain key information therefore I want them to spend time with it, I also made sure that I provided appendices at the back of the essay so that the reader can read some of the important documents which I produced without cramming the text with too much information. Although I didn’t put all the documents within the main body of the essay, I still think that they prove useful as key opinions, debates and transcripts which the reader might find relevant.
My dissertation will inform my professional practice after university as through studying the two disciplines in detail and how they are operated by other practitioners I have identified what my role is in the creative sector and the different career pathways going forward which will inform the next 7-10 years of my professional career. I have decided to study architectural education and become a practicing architect which takes up to ten years but in the mean time I will work collaboratively with other architects and artists to produce buildings and public art projects. The dissertation will also act as a document which I can look back upon if my practice shifts and I need to rethink my societal role and branding in relation to my projects it will provide the knowledge that I need to inform further decisions and conduct further research using a similar methodology which I adopted in this project.

“You don’t learn this in class”
Antje Danielson loves summer. And it’s not just the weather or the lighter traffic around campus. It’s the UROPs, she says.
Common enough to be referred to as a verb as well as a noun, MIT’s Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) gives students the opportunity to do advanced work alongside professors and graduate students. Danielson, the director of education for the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), says undergraduate research isn’t just one of the “best-known and best-loved” features of the undergraduate experience at MIT.
It’s also “one of the most important ways we help students prepare to put MIT’s ‘mens-et-manus’ [‘mind-and-hand’] motto into practice,” she says.
And, she adds, summer research is especially valuable because it lets students focus on one project with limited interruption. With MITEI, summer UROP students get an additional layer of experience. “The MITEI UROP is special because we encourage contact between industry sponsors and students, and because we help bridge disciplines to prepare the next generation of energy innovators and leaders no matter what their eventual career path,” Danielson says. “We also add extra programming that provides students the experience of professional life outside the lab.”
In the lab
Amy Glasmeier is no stranger to having UROP students in her lab.
“I’ve learned that as a principal investigator it’s critical to have a good match between the lab’s needs and the student’s needs,” says Glasmeier, a professor of economic geography and regional planning. After all, she explains, undergraduate researchers aren’t just assistants or technicians. They require additional engagement with faculty and graduate students before their work can contribute to a larger research project.
For example, she says, students who are mostly familiar with clearly delineated problem sets and calculations might struggle with nonstandard, unstructured data or project instruction. Her 2018 summer student, then-rising sophomore mechanical engineering major Taimor Williams, quickly vaulted over that obstacle. “Taimor has the intellectual flexibility and adaptability this project needs. I was able to just give him a big stack of reading on grid design, energy policy, data structures, and physics, to put it all in context,” says Glasmeier.
That’s important, she believes, because “you need the context of multiple scientific disciplines as well as social sciences and humanities to make the work relevant.”
Williams is characteristically modest about the amount of work he did to get started, saying only that “it was a lot of information, but manageable.” With an understanding of the literature in hand, Williams moved on to organizing qualitative descriptions of past electric system failures into data sets that can be analyzed programmatically. The ultimate goal is to identify patterns of system behavior that can be used to predict and prevent future outages.
Professional development
Over the past two years, MITEI Undergraduate Academic Coordinator Rachel Shulman has designed and built a program that brings students together across disciplinary boundaries and prepares them to be colleagues as well as researchers. This year, she had 25 participants. MITEI funded 19 of them, including four who came from Wellesley College. The students had supervisors representing 10 departments across campus.
A key part of their UROP experience was participating in MITEI’s professional development workshops, which are designed to provide support and guidance to make an undergraduate’s contributions more valuable. Together, the workshops build critical skills not taught in the lab or the classroom, such as library research; scientific and policy communication; professional networking and career planning; and poster design.
“Being a researcher isn’t just doing the lab work,” Shulman says. “That’s why we do these professional skills workshops and why we make sure all the students can communicate their research to different kinds of audiences.” In all fields, but especially in energy, it’s important to be able to reach across disciplines to build professional relationships; chemists and engineers and software developers and economists all need to be able to work together. And of course, she adds, “they’ll need to bring these ideas out of the lab as well, and explain them to general audiences.”
Students echo her statement: “You don’t learn this in class,” says junior Luke Hartnett, a mechanical engineering major. Working on biomass gasification with Leslie Bromberg, a principal research engineer in the Plasma Science and Fusion Center, and Emmanuel Kasseris, a mechanical engineering research scientist, was his first taste of professional lab work.
“Seeing my PI and the postdocs bouncing ideas off each other is just incredibly exciting. I feel like I’m getting a much better feel for what it’s like to work in the field in real life,” he says. At the same time, he’s also taken to heart advice to prepare a general-audience explanation of the work. “If I’m doing something really important,” he says, “I want to be able to tell everybody about it, not just my lab-mates.”
Alpha Yacob Arsano, a graduate student in architecture, says the workshops help students contribute more, and more quickly. She’s supervising Wellesley College computer science senior Chloe Blazey in the development of software to evaluate thermal comfort and performance of energy-efficient buildings for different climates. Blazey’s work as a computer science student was largely focused on abstract problem sets, so she needed research skills to rapidly gain a broad understanding of architecture and sustainable design.
“Chloe has already been using the lessons from the library session,” Arsano says, “and after just a couple of weeks she’s really helping to accelerate the work we’re doing.”
Blazey agrees that having a guide to the MIT library’s specialized academic research tools helped her adjust to working in architecture. It has also changed the way she sees her course of study. “I used to just think about computer science careers as being programming jobs,” she says. “It’s really opened my eyes to see the real-world applications of the theory I’ve been working on and how many different places my major can take me.”
Presenting the research
The culmination of the summer UROP experience is a presentation at the poster session at the MITEI Annual Research Conference in the fall. Shulman says that MITEI puts the UROPs alongside graduate students, research scientists, and professors to “really experience what it’s like to present their work in a professional context.”
Shulman brought in Writing and Communication Center lecturer Thalia Rubio to help the students prepare. In several meetings over the summer, she gave them a crash course in the research poster, a scientific communication format that most students don’t get to practice.
“They’re very familiar with term papers and lectures,” says Rubio. “They’ve done presentations. But a poster session uses different skills they don’t get much chance to exercise: design, very concise writing, and a presentation style that’s much more of a conversation than a lecture.”
Poster sessions are a key way for researchers to share work in progress and gain exposure to different perspectives on their work before they prepare it for publication. She has students practice creating posters and presentations for made-up topics like whether chewing gum improves mental concentration. Then, they get questions they aren’t prepared for: How do you know your measurement of concentration was a good one? What has previous research shown? Did you try different flavors of gum? What about organic versus conventional gum?
Obviously, says Rubio, it’s not about gum. It’s about how to handle questions that you haven’t considered.
“You’re going to get a question you aren’t prepared to answer, so be prepared to ask for their contact information and get back to them later,” she tells the students. She encourages them to learn from their oversights as well, noting that the feedback from a poster session can be incorporated into future research.
Bringing students together
Shulman has designed the student programming to reflect the inherent interdisciplinary nature of energy research.
“We’re aiming for cross-pollination,” she says. “That’s one reason we don’t limit professional development work to students we fund or supervise.”
Leon Glicksman, a professor of building technology and mechanical engineering, agrees. He enjoys being able to see students tackle real-world problems and encourages them to focus on the issues that lie between different academic disciplines.
“MITEI doesn’t have a single lab location, and although it doesn’t sound like it, that’s actually an advantage,” he says. “It prevents us from being cordoned off from other departments, initiatives, labs, and research centers. I like to tell students that energy is a great career for everyone, because the need to generate, distribute, and conserve energy isn’t going anywhere, and energy problems need people with lots of different skills and backgrounds to solve them.”
For example, Jose Soto Rivera, a junior in electrical engineering and computer science, is working with MITEI Deputy Director for Science and Technology Robert Stoner on a project about grid resilience in Puerto Rico. Without the workshops from the MITEI summer UROP, he might not have met Williams, whose work on infrastructure resilience in general may inform future grid designs. Neither of them would have met mechanical engineering students Cole Legg, a mechanical engineering junior who’s modeling waste-to-energy systems under Professor Ahmed Ghoniem, or sophomores Hartnett and Jimmy Tran, who are working on biomass gasification.
Their collaboration so far has been limited to speculative conversations over lunch; after all, they still have to finish their current research projects. But it’s possible that sometime in the future you might hear about a groundbreaking project that supplies hard-to-serve areas with reliable, low-carbon energy by combining smart grids, waste-to-energy systems, and biomass gasification — undertaken by students who met as UROPs in 2018.
The important thing for professors and investigators to remember, Glasmeier says, is that “a UROP is a gift.” Whether funding comes from MITEI, the MIT UROP office, or the lab itself, “having a UROP means having the ability to really watch someone develop as a researcher and as a person.”

Acer Aspire 5740 Battery all-laptopbattery.com
Steve Jobs' return to Apple sparked a major cultural shift within the company: to stay focused on a small number of products and make those products extremely polished.Jobs and Jony Ive, the head of Apple's design team, were in charge of preserving this core mission — to remain minimalist — while ensuring Apple's products, business, and marketing all aligned with this idea.Apple enjoyed unprecedented success as a result. The iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad all took the world by storm and changed the way people interacted with technology. Apple became the largest and most valuable company in the world. But Jobs died in 2011 of complications from pancreatic cancer, and in the five years since it looks as if Ive, his partner and spiritual equal, has been less and less present at Apple. Many believe Ive has one foot out the door.Judging by what Apple has done this year — both purposefully and accidentally — there's reason to worry about an Apple without both Jobs and Ive. Today, Apple sells about 46 models of its various hardware products, from phones to tablets to watches and computers and beyond. But more important than the sheer number of products is the number of legitimate complaints about these products.
The iPhone. Many iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s owners are complaining about a bug that essentially shuts down the phone even when it has a lot of battery life left. This is a problem that is happening right now, and yet, Apple hasn't figured out the true cause or at minimum hasn't disclosed it to the public. Apple has a replacement program, but it doesn't appear to cover all of those people affected by this bug. Apple employees say it's a real problem at its retail stores. The MacBook Pro. Battery life isn't as long as advertised in the newest model. Apple promised 10 hours, but many people are getting only seven or eight hours of battery life. Also, the new model has no SD card slot, no MagSafe (so your power cord doesn't safely disconnect if someone trips over it), and it costs much more than previous models. Customers and fans are not happy.AirPods. Apple missed the October release window for its first pair of wireless earbuds. They just went on sale last week, but they cost $130 more than Apple's wired earbuds, plus they're ugly to look at and easy to lose. People are better off buying the wired pair.
The Apple Watch. The second-generation model, released in September, is hardly different from the original. It adds water-resistance and a GPS, but it's still a bulky piece of hardware with an ugly interface that's far from intuitive. My colleague Melia Robinson, who reviewed the Apple Watch Series 2, said it had the "worst home screen of any Apple device I've ever owned."The Apple TV. The remote control is just awful. Since it's so small and its touchscreen is so sensitive, the remote 1) gets lost often, and 2) routinely turns on your Apple TV and starts playing random content. It also has too many buttons. It's surprising this got the OK from Apple's design house.So. Many. Dongles. The latest iPhone needs a dongle for headphones. The MacBook needs different dongles for peripherals like SD cards, Lightning connectors, and more. Dongles are one extra thing to carry and one extra thing to misplace. Ugh.It's not just Apple's hardware. Apple's software and services also leave much to be desired — some examples:Siri. Apple had a head-start in the digital assistant game when it introduced Siri as an iPhone 4S exclusive in 2011. But in the five years since, Siri has been left in the dust by competitors like Google Assistant and Amazon's Alexa, in terms of language recognition, cognition, and response time. Siri's competitors can also do more than Apple's AI — and it's frustrating how often Siri gets it wrong. Considering Siri is in almost every Apple product, you'd think the company would put more effort into making Siri a better listener and a better assistant.
iCloud. Apple had a similar head-start in the cloud business when Steve Jobs introduced the service in 2011; and yet, while iCloud is supposed to "just work" — syncing your documents and data between your computers and devices — the interface is still confusing, and the underlying architecture has been unreliable (I've lost many important files in the past due to syncing issues). Its various features, too, feel half-baked: iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive both feel needlessly complicated and frustrating to use.Apple Music is still cluttered (despite a face-lift earlier this year), and it's not as easy to discover music from artists you might like. (Spotify remains king in these areas.)iTunes is a mess. There are too many sections and menus for it to be intuitive. Just look at this. The App Store is in disarray and not fun to browse. There's no personalization to it — no recommended apps based on what you've downloaded, just popular apps and picks from Apple — thus making it feel extremely impersonal.Apple's Mail, Weather, News, Wallet, Health, Clock, and Calendarapps could all use some work to compete with better third-party alternatives.

Also worth noting: Marketing was a particular specialty of Jobs': When Jobs was alive, Apple created some of the most iconic ads in the history of advertising, like the "1984" commercial, the "Think Different" campaign, and the iPod silhouette ads. But lately, Apple's ads have been, quite frankly, not as good. You can point to any number of factors — perhaps a lack of originality, or humor, or style — but the bottom line remains: Apple's advertisements from the past five years have not generated the same buzz they used to.(For reference, Apple's two latest ads featured Brad Garrett as Frankenstein's monster and a 30-second clip comparing the new MacBook Pro to the inventions of gravity, fire, and toilet paper — really.)Perhaps Apple's current products are suffering because Apple is focusing on future projects. Apple is reportedly working on smart glasses that can handle augmented and/or virtual reality, as well as a self-driving-car system. Both projects reportedly have "hundreds" of people attached to them ... and both are many years from launching.
On the flip side, there are several current Apple products that feel downright neglected. iTunes is in desperate need of an update, and Apple's three-year-old Mac Pro no longer meets the needs of "pro" customers — it's surprising Apple hasn't given this computer even a minor refresh, just to keep chipsets up-to-date. Many other products need polishing or fixing. The key, as it was when Jobs returned to Apple, is focus: Shrink the number of ongoing projects, and execute them well. That might mean taking a really hard look at some less successful products and cutting them.Apple recently decided to kill its line of WiFi routers — which is a shame, since I own one — but it's a good move, as the company clearly needs more bandwidth for other projects. And Apple needs to do more moves like this.iTunes. I spent over a decade perfecting my music library on iTunes, but with the introductions of Apple Music and the Apple TV, there's really no reason for Apple's multimedia to be housed on such an old platform any longer. Apple should do a wholesale replacement of iTunes with Apple Music and rebrand/spin out the iTunes Store to continue selling digital movies, music, and more.
The MacBook. Apple should consolidate the MacBook Air and MacBook lines, so if you're in the market for a new laptop, you choose either the MacBook Air or the MacBook Pro — one laptop focuses on portability, while the other focuses on professional use. Right now, it's too difficult to differentiate the normal MacBook from the MacBook Air, especially if you ask one of Jobs' favorite questions: "Which one do I tell my friends to buy?"The Apple Watch Edition. Selling an expensive version of the Apple Watch was a good way to create excitement for a new product category, but now that the Apple Watch is over two years old, it's time to kill the Edition watches. Having a design team spend time and energy on a single watch model, which doesn't do anything different from the normal watch, is a waste of resources. I'd rather see a redesigned Apple Watch interface or an Apple Watch that does more things than the basic model, instead of just the same product with an expensive case.
The Self-Driving Car Project 'Titan.' Years ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook reportedly gave his company a green light to build an electric, self-driving car, not unlike Tesla Motors' popular Model S. But recent reports say Apple ran into many issues in its project, lost several key people, and has since pivoted into building a self-driving car system — essentially software that can help cars drive and navigate by themselves, but not necessarily for an Apple-made car. Perhaps it's premature to say Apple's car project isn't worth the sizable effort required, but it sounds as if Apple would otherwise benefit by having more people focused on its core products like the iPhone, the iPad, and Mac computers. Maybe Project Titan just needs time for more technologies to become cheaper or readily available, or maybe Apple is still trying to crystallize its plan. Either way, it's time for Apple to consider abandoning this project — especially since the company has so many other ambitions in other areas, like TV and augmented/virtual reality.

Dongles. I miss the days when Apple products would "just work." Please, Apple, kill the dongles. All of them. Come up with some more clever solutions. Please. We will unfortunately never know whether Jobs would've approved AirPods, or the much-maligned Apple TV "Siri" remote, or the move away from MagSafe power cords and toward USB-C. But the fact is, Apple today has many projects and many problems that need attention. It would be wise of Apple to evaluate these issues and solve them — and give a harder look at the company's many products — before moving onto even more new projects.Dell unveiled a bunch of new laptops and tablets at this year’s Consumer Electronics Showcase, but its new XPS 13 was by far the most impressive. The new 13-inch laptop comes with a 3200 x 1800 resolution display with the slimmest bezels I’ve ever seen on a laptop. There's also a cheaper version with a 1920 x 1080 resolution screen.
Since the bezels are so thin, the laptop actually looks a bit smaller than the MacBook Air although their screens are the same size. The edge-to-edge display really is gorgeous. I didn’t have too much time to play with the laptop, but in the few minutes I used it I noticed how much colors really popped throughout the Windows interface. High resolution photos looked extremely detailed, too.The laptop’s display is obviously its standout feature, but Dell is also claiming that it gets 15 hours of battery life. If true, that would beat the MacBook Air’s lengthy 12-hour battery life by three full hours, but we won’t know for sure until we try it out ourselves. The keyboard felt sturdy and was comfortable to type with, but the MacBook Air’s is still better. The aluminum build on Apple’s MacBooks still provides the most efficient and comfortable typing experience in my opinion, but the new XPS 13's keyboard is still still fairly good. The 13-inch version of Dell's new laptop starts at $799, while the base price for the smaller 11-inch MacBook Air is set at $899. If you're looking for a new high-end Windows laptop with an excellent screen, the Dell XPS 13 seems like a solid choice.
