The Forgotten Muckraker Who Inspired UC To Start A Football Team

As the University of Cincinnati Bearcats suit up for their 135th season, it is almost assured that no one will recall the name of David Graham Phillips. He never played for any UC team and – although enrolled – never attended any UC classes, yet Phillips was profoundly influential as UC organized its first football squad.

Archibald Irwin “Arch” Carson Sr. (1864-1951) ought to know. Carson was there at the very beginning, team captain for UC’s first two football seasons. Since 1910, UC’s teams have competed on Carson Field, named in recognition of his role. Carson recalled the earliest days of Cincinnati’s pigskin enthusiasm on several occasions with slight variations, but he always credited novelist and crusading journalist David Graham Phillips for providing the initial impetus. Here is the version as reported in the 1927 Cincinnatian yearbook:

“Arch I. Carson was the captain of that first Cincinnati eleven. It was he who organized the team upon the suggestion of David Graham Phillips, the year before, and it was he who sent away to a big commercial house in the east for the first football, because there were none in the city of Cincinnati at that time.”

And here is the version as recorded by the Cincinnati Enquirer [17 December 1934] in a profile of Carson:

“The first team at the University was organized largely through the interest of David Graham Phillips, famous author, who aroused interest in football in Cincinnati two years prior to the organization of the team . . . Local sporting goods stores did not handle football equipment in those days. In 1885, Phillips had to send to New York to get a football.”

Even though Carson was the source for both of these reports, they differ in significant details. The 1927 Cincinnatian story has Carson sending to New York in 1884 for a football and a first game against some Mount Auburn amateurs in 1885. The 1934 Enquirer piece has Phillips sending for the football in 1885 and the first game against Mount Auburn in 1886. Both, however, agree that the initial idea for a UC football team originated with Phillips.

Few people today have ever heard of him, but David Graham Phillips was an A-list celebrity during his lifetime. Born and raised in Madison, Indiana, Phillips apparently enrolled simultaneously at Asbury (later DePauw) University in Greencastle, Indiana, and at the University of Cincinnati. Although he actually attended classes in Greencastle, the 1883 UC Bulletin lists Phillips among the freshman class in Cincinnati that year – along with Archibald Carson.

In 1885, when he was either buying a football for Carson or urging Carson to buy a football, Phillips dropped out of Asbury and transferred to Princeton University as a junior. Phillips returned to Cincinnati soon after graduating from Princeton, working first at the Cincinnati Times-Star where he was a general assignment reporter and later at the Cincinnati Commercial Gazette as a feature writer and gossip columnist.

While Phillips was earning his journalistic bona fides at the Cincinnati dailies, UC scheduled its first intercollegiate match against Miami University in Oxford on 8 December 1888. It is not clear whether Phillips attended that earliest game. The local papers gave it little mention.

Not long after that first UC-Miami game passed into the record books, Phillips departed Cincinnati for New York, where he wrote for the New York Sun and the New York World. In his spare time, he wrote his first novel, “The Great God Success.” The novel sold well enough that Phillips resigned from newspapers to embark on a career as a free-lance journalist. His hard-hitting 1906 investigation of political corruption, published as a series titled “The Treason of the Senate” by Cosmopolitan magazine, earned him a national reputation. President Theodore Roosevelt was not amused; it is believed that Teddy coined the term “muckraker” specifically to describe Phillips. On the other hand, that series of articles was instrumental in removing 17 Senators from office and in passing the Seventeenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution providing for the direct election of Senators, rather than their appointment by state legislatures.

Phillips published 18 novels, many delving into controversial topics at the time, including prostitution, pre-marital sex, predatory capitalism, political corruption and urban blight. The plot of his 1909 page-turner, “The Fashionable Adventures of Joshua Craig,” is representative of his interests and explorations. According to the South Bend, Indiana, Tribune [16 January 1909]:

“The title of the book gives at once a suggestion of the character of the story – a story of strong, virile personality set among the frothy superficialities of society life in Washington. Joshua Crag, a young western lawyer, is striving to make a name for himself in national politics. In spite of his utter disregard of conventionalities and his frank contempt of the narrowness of the aristocracy, he finds among them one true woman, Margaret Severence. He fights for the supremacy of his fundamental ideas, and slowly but surely the ‘lady’ in her gives way to the ‘woman,’ and she finally yields; and becomes the quiescent wife of a future governor.”

Buried in the details of that novel, a disgruntled violinist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra named Fitzhugh Coyle Goldsborough imagined clues that Phillips was plotting against him and his family. Goldsborough, scion of a prominent Maryland political family, stalked the famous author as he traveled around New York City and, on the afternoon of Sunday, 22 January 1911, shot him outside the Princeton Club at Grammercy Park. Phillips lingered for two days until he died. Goldsborough shot himself immediately after the attack and died at the scene. In the years after his death, at least six of Phillips’ novels were adapted for the movies, with one, “Old Wives For New,” directed by Cecil B. DeMille.

Today, David Graham Phillips is hardly remembered at all, his books gathering dust and the films they spawned unwatched and even lost. As the UC team charges out for another season on Arch Carson Field, it is fitting to spare a thought or two for the man who first got the ball rolling for the university, so to speak.

i want a plot where muse a is in a popular band that goes on tour and muse b is a new makeup artist or a hair stylist hired for the upcoming tour that jusT SO HAPPENS to be muse a’s ex (though the breakup was something both really didn’t want tbh) and the tour is just filled with tension like pls imagine the silence during makeup when muse b is leaning over really close to muse a’s face or the jealousy when muse b is touchy with the other band members god pls*

a plot about a college student on the verge of losing her scholarship. with a full schedule and no free time, she has no shot at finding a job. so in a last ditch attempt she puts herself on suga.rbabies.com and searches through suga.rdaddy.com. a week passed by. many blind meetings with ceos, doctors, lawyers, even a few actors. yet nothing pans out. one day, late at night. a message pops up. inside waiting is a message from her favorite professor. *

a single dad x kindergarten teacher plot where his kid is in love with the teacher, always talking about them when they get home, making them pictures and always raising their hand in class being the best student they can be. the father finds this adorable because the kid is so whipped by this teacher he’s never met due to work and the fact his mother is always picking them up. so, parent teacher night finally comes and it’s time for them to meet. and the dad realizes the reasons why his kid is so whipped in the first place.

plot: rich business man tries out a c.all girl (inexperienced and much younger) but they end up having A+++ s.ex (can be v rough bc he’s so stressed) so he ends up calling her up quite often and they grow attached to each other xcept there can be drama bc a) he’s married or engaged or something or b) he wants to keep them a secret or maybe even she tells him that she doesn’t date clients and aHHH yeah pls gimme

no but gimme a plot where the girl’s a mob boss’s daughter, and the boy is a cop fresh outta the academy and he doesn’t realize that the girl he’s been flirting with is the daughter of the guy he’s trying to get behind bars.

okay so um i need a plot where this like young precious innocent lil cinnamon roll of a girl somehow stumbles upon some kinda se.xy chatroom thing (that may or may not be p.rison/inm.ate related) and starts chatting with this older guy who’s in prison (bc he was in a ga.ng or dr.ug ring or something, nothing TOO crazy ok) and they spend like months chatting pretty soon he convinces her to send him pictures and he gives her like d.irty little ‘missions’ (like wear vib,rating panti.es to school and take nud.es in public places and stuff like that) and then he eventually gets out of pri.son and they meet but she’s still a vi.rgin and he’s spent months not getting any and like CAN I PLEASE JUST HAVE THIS  DEBAUCHERY

i want to have a plot where ballerina/bad boy and she has very strict parents and they force to dedicate her life to dancing which she agrees to until she meets a boy who s.mokes a lot, gets into a lot of fights, and always has a cocky smile on his face. but she doesn’t mind because he makes her feel like she isn’t someone’s doll anymore, like a normal person.

um, give me a plot where she used to be this s.exy, wild girl and had a bad boy boyfriend to match but when he turned eighteen he was caught for some cr.ime and sent to pris.on for a couple years. he came out fully expecting for her to be waiting for him but when he finds her she’s this prim and proper girl who is dating some pretentious ivy league di.ck. she pretends to be happy with her vanilla, boring relationship, but soon he wraps her up in his world again.

a plot where he’s a little too old for her but she doesn’t care. he thinks she’s immature and too reckless with her behavior. but she’s hellbent on proving him otherwise. so she applies for the position of his new personal assistant and he can’t help but appreciate her determination. of course he hires her but he does nothing short of giving her a hard time because this is her first job and she has no idea what she’s doing. but crap he finds her crying in the bathroom and his first instinct is to hold her and comfort her. he can’t believe he’s the cause of this and wises up fast. also maybe it has to do with his now urge to protect her.

resilient. life has given him a lot of opportunities to give up and he’s turned them down at every corner. he knows that it’s never going to be easy for him, life didn’t deal him a nice hand. but he’s ready to play dirty just to keep himself in the game. he’s stronger than he was at each bad player before. and he’s not going to fold.

bitter. he’s let vengeance consume his soul. he’s a witch, his family were witches. he should be proud. but instead, all he saw was it ruin the best thing that ever happened in his life. so he’s taken in the darkness and let it fester into the hatred that he has for the very people he lives with.

Archer has to be able to keep his life a secret, the only way he can stay that way is by blocking powers, really. I think they idea of also having the very power that would have been able to save his half-sister is also such a tragic, devastating thing that just haunts him and drives him farther down the path he's going.

Archer's powers lie in his mind. He has to passively be thinking about negation for his powers to work. When he's going head to head with someone mentally stronger, he can use his eyes to concentrate his magic. he also tends to use his eyes when going against an active power, e.g., pyrokinesis. He usually squints to focus it.

bio.

Archibald Nathan Dylan Ivashkov was the product of an affair. A father out to war, gone from the home for over two years left a wife lonely. It wasn’t intentional. Feelings sparked from an old flame and loneliness only further fueled the flame. But the child was shuffled away after a few months. The mother knew how her husband would react to the sudden child—knowing it couldn’t have been his. So she gave the child up, leaving only a little note card with his name at the door of a nearby church. Thankfully, the little child was taken in by a family from the church. And so Archibald Nathan Dylan Ivashkov, or Andi as affectionately grew up being called, was safe.

And his former life might have blissfully been forgotten save that little note card had it not been for one little girl. The other child of the woman and the only living soul to remember the little Ivashkov boy. When Andi was fifteen, a nineteen-year-old girl stopped him in a park. He was shocked to discover she knew his name, no one outside the Carsons knew it. She introduced herself as Violet Ivashkov. His half-sister. His world tilted and everything toppled atop him. At first he didn’t want to believe her, but he’d seen the same sparkling emerald eyes and dark hair in the mirror.

After a few months, he conceded. He thought at first he was just humoring his curiosity, but there was a small part of him filled with hope at the possibility of meeting his real family.

Violet told him what she remembered of him as a child from the few months they’d had together. She’d never forgotten him. She even spent months trying to find him. Andi bit back on his tongue for as long as he could before he finally asked about his mother, their mother. And it was revealed to him that she had taken her own life with the man she truly loved after her husband returned from war. It filled his heart with sadness to know that he’d never meet the people who’d given him life. But Violet was a huge comfort in that time. They bonded as she told him what she could of their mother.

In time, she eventually revealed that their mother was a witch. Violet claimed that she had had inklings of visions of the future. She wasn’t sure if it was her magic or her imagination. She also told Andi that he had the potential to become a witch as well, but he’d shown even less signs than her that he was a witch.

The two became inseparable over the next few years, that is until Andi graduated from high school. Violet’s powers had indeed developed. They ability of precognition. And it devoured her whole. She tried everything to escape her magic: drugs, adrenaline, distractions, you name it. Eventually, she found the only thing that could numb it was magic. But it was magic more strong than she possessed. Andi watched as she became a shell of the person he loved. She tried little spells at first, but she eventually was taken by magic, exhausted her soul. Andi was the one that found her, along with their mother’s grimoire.

His heart broke again, but he had something to blame this time. Magic. At nearly eighteen, he forwent the idea of college and spent all his time looking for ways to remove magic. Eventually, he discovered witch hunters. They listened to his plight and pulled him in with their saccharine words. He disagreed with their “burn-the-witch” philosophy. He’d seen magic take life and he didn’t want to see it anymore. He proposed some form of cure. A magic removal. The hunters thought it was ridiculous at first, but he swayed them.

The Hunters took him in under the cloak of night. He stayed with the Carsons and even began college. His goal was molecular biology. There had to be the secret key somewhere. He even used his own blood at first, knowing he had the trait for magic.

But his tests came to a complete halt one night. They hunters had found a witch and were ready to burn him alive. However, Andi wanted to try his most recent magical no-go. He was a fast learner, but it was a delicate process with only about a year’s worth of tests and trials. He didn’t even get to administer the vial when the witch started making his own fires. He burned two other hunters and was about to burn Andi—but it didn’t work. The hunters made quick work and killed the witch before any other hunters perished.

Then came the question, what saved Andi? The hunters prompted him to attempt some simple spells from the grimoire he had. He refused at first, but they pressured him until he caved. That’s when it was revealed that he’d inherited the thing he wanted to destroy. He was distraught. He fled the hunters and ran to the nearest church he could find. But it wasn’t a church that he found. It was the School.

He wanted to say no and leave the School. But it made him realise something. This was a place full of witches. And it never came for Violet. They had all turned their backs on his sister. The anger that sparked in him was that unlike before. He accepted his new position in the school and made a quick return to the Hunters. He presented them with the perfect solution. He could spy for them, tell them things, and he had ample ways to test his cure.

So young, twenty-year-old Andi, disguised his heart. Archer Ivashkov came into creation with his magic. He discovered that his power was that of negation and loved it even more. He kept on with school online, as he wouldn’t be able to stay at the school nor his home. He bid the Carsons farewell and began his new dual life. He’s been working on the sly since. But now things have escalated. One of the witches he’d been testing his cure has gone missing and people are to find out why. This could be the end of his charade.

headcanons:

He grew up going by Andi Carson (the last name of the family who took him in). Andi is still the name he goes by with the hunters, but to keep things discreet he goes by Archer Ivashkov in the School. He even discovered an old grimoire in the library that belonged to one of his ancestors.

The note card he was left with read: “My dearest Archibald Nathan Dylan Ivashkov. You are my only son, the light of my life and my greatest regret. I’m sorry I won’t be there for you as you grow, but I hope you find a family that can give you all the love I can’t. Forever, your mother.”

Archer is still pretty new to being an upper-classman, so sometimes he’ll still walk to the wrong wing and then have to turn around and head back. The only reason he’s still conformtable with the switch is that his room hasn’t actually changed.

muse a is in college and decides to become a stri,pper at an elite club to pay for her tuition. the club is run by this mafia boss, muse b, who’s enchanted with her from the get-go and the feeling was mutual. so for the next year, on every friday night, muse b books a private dance from her for two hours, and muse a who has only been comfortable giving them to him and no one else, starts to look forward to it every time. she knows he’s dangerous but he doesn’t scare her like he probably should and every week the tension becomes thicker and thicker… i think it would b very cool to develop this and see what could happen when they eventually hook up. muse b doesn’t want to bring her into his world, not wanting for her to get hurt but the heart wants what it wants. 😈

forbidden love is always angsty so why not do that and add rival g.angs to the mix?  muse a is the daughter of the head boss of the local gang and is sick and tired of having her life controlled by her overprotective father. so, to rebel against his wishes after an argument, muse a decides to go to a nightclub that her father had always forbidden her to attend. unknown to her, the club is run by the rival gang’s boss’ son, muse b, and not knowing who she is, can’t stop looking at her on the dance floor. they eventually bump into each other and after having a few drinks, end up at muse a’s apartment and they hook up. i was thinking they both never brought up their families and their true professions and maybe start to hang out/go on dates and then bam, the truth comes out and drama begins. especially when they can’t stay away from each other.

okay so um i need a plot where this like young precious innocent lil cinnamon roll of a girl somehow stumbles upon some kinda se.xy chatroom thing (that may or may not be p.rison/inm.ate related) and starts chatting with this older guy who’s in prison (bc he was in a ga.ng or dr.ug ring or something, nothing TOO crazy ok) and they spend like months chatting pretty soon he convinces her to send him pictures and he gives her like d.irty little ‘missions’ (like wear vib,rating panti.es to school and take nud.es in public places and stuff like that) and then he eventually gets out of pri.son and they meet but she’s still a vi.rgin and he’s spent months not getting any and like CAN I PLEASE JUST HAVE THIS  DEBAUCHERY

i want to have a plot where ballerina/bad boy and she has very strict parents and they force to dedicate her life to dancing which she agrees to until she meets a boy who s.mokes a lot, gets into a lot of fights, and always has a cocky smile on his face. but she doesn’t mind because he makes her feel like she isn’t someone’s doll anymore, like a normal person.

um, give me a plot where she used to be this s.exy, wild girl and had a bad boy boyfriend to match but when he turned eighteen he was caught for some cr.ime and sent to pris.on for a couple years. he came out fully expecting for her to be waiting for him but when he finds her she’s this prim and proper girl who is dating some pretentious ivy league di.ck. she pretends to be happy with her vanilla, boring relationship, but soon he wraps her up in his world again.

a plot where he’s a little too old for her but she doesn’t care. he thinks she’s immature and too reckless with her behavior. but she’s hellbent on proving him otherwise. so she applies for the position of his new personal assistant and he can’t help but appreciate her determination. of course he hires her but he does nothing short of giving her a hard time because this is her first job and she has no idea what she’s doing. but crap he finds her crying in the bathroom and his first instinct is to hold her and comfort her. he can’t believe he’s the cause of this and wises up fast. also maybe it has to do with his now urge to protect her.

i just want a plot where muse a has been in this friends with benefits thing with muse b bc they both just wanted to lose their v.irginity already (they’ve been neighbours and fwb since they were sixteen) and now he became a m.anwhore. they are completely different at school (i thought of a bad boy/”good” girl kinda thing) BUT when muse a says she wants it to stop bc she wants to try to have a real relationship with someone else, muse b realises he doesn’t want it to end bc he rlly likes her ??? and hes still such a d.ick but he starts to give her more attention at school bc she’s the realest thing he’s ever had and he just doesn’t know how to stop the whole bad boy persona !!GIVE IT TO ME PLS

god i just got an imagine of a trophy wife who is WAY younger than her husband. as in she’s in her second year of college and he’s in his thirties. she is absolutely spoiled by him and she’s all too eager to please him in & out of bed. for all intends and purposes he seems like he’s in charge. he’s older. he has the money. yet he is so weak for her and wanting to give her the world. yet when they’re in the bedroom he f.ucks her like he doesn’t love her and she’s too into it. someone let me play this out.

Pure

So, I decided to post the first chapter of my story, Pure, and see how well it’s received. It’s the first story I’ve completed in full. I hope you like it!

Chapter 1

Nice To Meet You

  My name is Eden Kae James, I’m seventeen, and I live in a

small, sleepy town called Plymouth in Ohio, with a population

of 1,857. My parents died when I was four, so I live with my

aunt and uncle, Lorraine and David Archibald.

       There’s nothing all that special about me. I maintain a B

average in school, and I don’t do sports—because god help me if

I ever tried—and I have a few people I’d call close friends, but

that’s about it.

       I’m just painfully ordinary.

       As I sit in fourth period algebra II, spinning my pencil

absent-mindedly around on my desk, our teacher is giving a

lesson on polynomial functions. The Plymouth-Shiloh Local

School District in Richland County has two newer buildings as

opposed to the old ones that had been around since my

grandmother was in school and before even that. The middle and

high school are conjoined by the back and front hallways, a

single solitary hall consisting of the middle and high schools.

This building was constructed in 2005. The elementary school

across the parking lot was built in 2010, five years later.

 The schools both have newer, better equipment than one

would expect a small town school district would have. Each

classroom has a SmartBoard and just this year we got Google

notebooks. There are two carts of fifty, so each teacher has to

share, but at least we have them.

I take a break from spinning my pencil to glance idly up at

the SmartBoard, my eyes looking at the numbers and letters on

the screen, but my brain not pulling them in.

Each classroom has bright blue counters and storage

cabinets on one side of the room, two whiteboards, one for

general messages and the other for actual lessons…though, we

don’t use the whiteboards much anymore, and has one wall

painted, either blue to match the cabinets, or brown. In this

particular classroom, the concrete wall to the west is painted

brown, while the rest are white. The carpet underneath our feet

is indigo, with specks of brown and red here and there.

As I’m staring blankly at the board, my friend Phoebe

pokes me in the back with her pen. I turn and give her a look.

       Phoebe Dover is absolutely gorgeous; long pin straight

blonde hair, pale blue eyes, a round face with a small nose,

tanned skin and full, pink lips. Next to her, I look like a troll.

She smiles mischievously and points over to our other friend,

Ramir Abboud. He’s a foreign exchange student from Egypt and

is hosted by Phoebe’s parents. He has the common dark skin of

someone from the Middle East, short black hair and deep brown

eyes, sharp features and an impossibly deep voice.

       Turning my gaze from him, I shrug my shoulders at

Phoebe, non-verbally asking what she’s on about. She holds up

her index finger and opens an app on her phone, fiddles with it,

and then there’s a sudden, loud, FRAAAAAP sound from

Ramir’s pocket.

       Our entire class freezes, then erupts in laughter.

       Ramir stiffens, red lighting up his cheeks and he ducks his

head, turning his eyes over to Phoebe, who is about to fall out of

her seat with laughter. “I’ll kill you.” He mouths. I giggle.

“Alright, Ramir, give me your phone.” Our teacher, Mrs. Davis,

says as she walks down the aisle to him, holding her aged hand

out. Grumbling, Ramir fishes his Samsung out of his pocket and

grudgingly hands it to her. “You can get this back after school.

Everyone! Settle down!”

       As the class quiets, Phoebe lightly smacks me and winks. I

shake my head and turn back around, lest I get in trouble, too.    

       “What the hell, Pheebs?” Ramir stomps up to us after the

bell rings, looking furious.

“Oh, well, you know how I asked to borrow your phone because

I forgot Olivia’s number?”

“Yeah?”

“Well I actually installed this app that lets you play fart sounds

on it when you connect with another phone that has the same

app,”

“You’re awful!” Ramir childishly stomps his foot and sticks his

bottom lip out, but Phoebe just smiles charmingly.

“Oh, come on, Ramir it was a little funny.”

“For you! Eden, help me out?” I shrug my shoulders and offer a

small smile that asks, ‘What do you want me to do?’, and he

huffs, turning his back on us and stomping away.

       As I adjust my old Jansport backpack on my left shoulder,

Phoebe closes her locker with that high-school hallway

slamming noise and turns to me. “So, are you coming to lunch?”

I roll my eyes in my head as I think.

“Well, we do have that bio test tomorrow. Maybe I should skip

and study for that,”

“Oh, come on, Eden, you have all night to study,” She slumps

her shoulders dramatically and shoots me a pleading look.

“Come on, eat with us. You’ve been sitting in the library all

week studying for that stupid test.”

“Mm…”

The truth is, I don’t like how noisy the cafeteria gets during

lunch. Plymouth High School only has about 250 students, but

since we share a building with the middle school it seems much

bigger. Plymouth shares a school district with the villages of

Shiloh and Rome—both being a blink-and-you-miss-it type

village. And, over half the junior and senior classes are at

Pioneer, a vocational school in Shelby about fifteen minutes

away. I had thought about going there, but decided I’d stay at

Plymouth. Pioneer is way too big for someone like me.

“Well?” Phoebe asks. I sigh, won over.

“Okay, I’ll go with you.”

“Ee! Okay! Put your stuff away and let’s go before the line gets

too long!” I give her a small, exasperated smile.

“Okay. Calm down.”

       We walk down the hallway, passing the teal blue rows of

lockers and giggling students. Phoebe is the girl with the clear,

loud voice, the girl who always finds a way to make even the

most boring of situations fun and exciting. She’s a sweet girl

with a big heart, and has no problem attracting people to her,

and she and I have been friends since kindergarten, even though

she’s the beautiful sociable blonde and I’m the introverted

brunette. You know, typical school stereotypes.

       But here in Plymouth, pretty much everybody gets along.

We still have our cliques, but everyone ventures out of them and

mingles with each other; jocks, goths, nerds, and preps, all of us

know each other somehow or someway. A lot of us are actually

related. Plus Phoebe and I have been neighbors ever since my

mom and dad died.

       My friend loops her arm around my shoulders as we get

closer toward the cafeteria, as I keep getting bumped.

       When we finally manage to get out of the line—it ran from

the door into the kitchen all the way to the series of long tables

by the entrance to the cafeteria—we find where our other three

friends, Luke, Olivia, and Carson are sitting and begin eating.

This room is about the same size of our gym, with three

mammoth TV’s that never get turned on mounted to the walls

where the windows and walls meet. Along the far wall and

covering half the other two, are huge windows that stretch from

the floor to the ceiling, letting in lots of natural light. There are

several circular tables scattered here and there, along with the

three rows of long tables. We sit at the circular table closest to

the a la cart line.

       Luke, who is Phoebe’s cousin—see I told you we’re all

related—actually just turned seventeen. He was allowed to skip

first grade and come up into our grade. He has caramel colored

hair and wide honey brown eyes, a proud nose and a slightly

wider than normal mouth. His skin is medium colored, like

Phoebe’s when she’s not tan, and is five foot nine with a narrow

build. He’s the smart kid of our group.

       Olivia is the pixie girl of our school. She is four foot eight,

extremely petite, has an insanely round baby face and large

bright grey eyes. Her dark hair is cut short, 1920s style, and she

has skin the color of peaches. She always smells like cinnamon,

and is very artsy.

       Carson is a football player. He’s six foot even and is very

muscular for an eighteen-year-old. His eyes match the color of

his skin; chocolate, and his black hair is shaved close to his

scalp with a circular pattern shaved into it. He’s also Phoebe’s

boyfriend.

       As I pour ranch over my garden salad, Carson throws a

piece of paper across the table at me, hitting me off my head.

“Hey,” I whine, snatching it up and beaming it as hard as I can

back at him. He easily smacks it away; it falls to the linoleum

floor, but no one picks it up.

“Where have you been the last week?” He asks, eyeing me.

“I’ve been studying,”

“Studying,” Carson repeats the word, trying to imitate my voice

and failing miserably. “No one studies for a full week for a

dumb biology test. You don’t like us anymore!” Clearly teasing

me, he dramatically throws his head into his hands and shakes

his shoulders as if he’s sobbing. I roll my eyes. Phoebe lightly

smacks his arm.

“Shut up and eat your food.” She says with a smile.

       “Eden just doesn’t like all the noise in here,” Olivia says,

her light and airy voice dancing across the table. I nod silently,

bringing a forkful of salad to my mouth; the lettuce falls off. As

I stab it again, Luke nods.

“Understandable. I wish they’d let us take our lunches to the

library.”

“If they let us do that, then the library would be full,” Phoebe

says. She smothers her chicken nuggets in barbeque sauce, then

takes the leftover sauce and mixes her corn with it.

“Eww, Pheebs, what are you even?” Carson makes a face, but

Phoebe shrugs her narrow shoulders and begins eating.

“Don’t knock it till you try it.”

       As we continue eating, my head suddenly feels light, and I

sway a bit in my seat. “Eden?” Phoebe gently touches my arm,

and as I regain myself, I take a deep breath. Everyone else looks

at me with worried expressions. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah,” I mutter. “Yeah, I don’t know what happened.” The

truth is, the past couple of weeks this has been happening. My

mind suddenly spins and my vision blurs, and I lose all sense of

where I am. It gets worse with noise. So along with just

generally not liking loud places, I’ve stayed in the library

because of that.

       I’ve also been having a recurring dream. I don’t know if it

would qualify as a nightmare, but when I wake up my heart is

racing and I can’t breathe. It’s like someone had been sitting on

my chest.

       I take another deep breath, and Olivia says, “Maybe you

should go to the nurse.”

“No,” I reply. “It’s nothing. I’m probably just getting a cold or

something.” She gives me a look, but doesn’t say anything else.

We return to eating, and soon lunch is over.

         Once two-forty-five rolls around, the final bell rings. Ever

since my head spun at lunch, I’ve gotten a migraine. Light and

sound kills me, and it’s all I can do to keep my eyes open.

Purposely ignoring everyone, I make my way out to the parking

lot where my 2004 Ford F-150 truck is parked and climb in,

resting my forehead against the steering wheel once the door is

shut.

       Man…this came out of nowhere. After a minute I turn the

truck on and switch it into reverse, leaving the parking lot and

heading for home.

My aunt Lorraine and uncle David live out near 598 going

toward Mansfield, but still in the Plymouth school district. Our

house is in the middle of nowhere, but that’s how we like it.

Lorraine is the sister of my mother, who died alongside my

father when I was four. The final report said that they died

during a home invasion gone wrong, but Lorraine always said

she didn’t believe it considering nothing was stolen. Until my

parents’ deaths, I lived with them in Baltimore, Maryland, where

my father was born and raised. I don’t remember much about

them, except that my mother had a beautiful voice and would

sing to me every night, and that my father would craft me little

birdhouses to put outside my window so I could watch the birds.

But sadly, that’s all I can remember.

I glance at Phoebe’s house out of the corner of my eye as I

pull into my driveway, pulling off to the side so Lorraine and

David can park in the garage when they get home. Our house is

a Victorian, built in 1818 from what Lorraine told me. Phoebe’s

house, which is right across the gravel road, is newer, 1980s, I

think.

As I gather my things and climb out of my truck, a strange

shadow distracts me, and I trip.

“Ah!” I squeal as I tumble to the ground, hitting my knee

on the sharp rocks underneath me. “Ah, damn it!” I twist my

body so I’m sitting on my bum and look at my knee, looking

around for the shadow I just saw. Nothing. I moan quietly, and

look down to my injured knee. My pants ripped when I fell,

allowing the rocks to dig into my skin and draw blood. Damn

it…I liked these jeans.

Sighing to myself, I slowly pull myself to my feet and dust

myself off, bending over to gather my things. That’s me, I guess.

I’m literally the clumsiest girl on Earth.

“Trust me, Camille! It’s simply a formality, that’s why I was allowed to add you into the Selection.” Ahren was pulling at his collar, suddenly feeling very hot. “Then why haven’t you ended it, Ahren?” Camille was usually a calm person but this was getting on her nerves. She loved him and he loved her. It was that simple. He didn’t need anymore options so why was he dragging this out?

While Camille thought that it was being dragged out, Ahren knew that it was already a shorter timeline than usual. He knew this because the nation and the PR team knew this. He had narrowed down his pool of 35 ladies to 8 in a span of a month. Everyone knew he would pick Camille but couldn’t figure out why he was taking long. While a month was short, it was reasonable if he knew who he was going to pick and was polite enough to give the other girls a chance.

Although as of late, he wasn’t quite sure if Camille was The One. All of the other 7 girls were brilliant in their own ways. He ran through the names in his head. Erika from Waverly was an artist in every sense of the word. She would draw and sketch the other girls and even did several amusing caricatures of Ahren. She was also an artist with hair, she dyed her hair a different colour every two weeks or so and did all of the other Selected’s hair. Isla was from Honduragua and her Hispanic heritage reminded Maxon of Amberly so Isla immediately won points with him. She was also incredibly kind and Ahren liked that about her. Most of the previous girls were in it for fame and took the competition very seriously which brought out their mean streak. Isla was gracious throughout the whole process, helping the other Selected whenever she could. This gained her the protection of everyone’s strongest competitor.  Violet was born and bred in Angeles and every Selected’s fiercest competitor. She was rather ruthless, not in the way Celeste from Maxon’s Selection had been but Violet has been very intimidating towards the girls who tend to steer clear of her. Isla seems to be the only one to get along with her so instinctively Violet protects Isla from any harassment. Despite being rough around the edges, Ahren and Violet bonded over their mutual love for writing.  Nadia is a very mellow contender in the Selection, she keeps to herself mostly but is able to keep conversation when required of her. Before coming to the Palace she spent most of her days in Zuni as a wildlife photographer, she was able to talk to the King about their mutual passion in photography and helped Ahren dig deeper with his own hobby of photography. Ginny was Violet’s counterpart from Columbia. Some would say that the two of them were two sides of the same coin. While Violet was outwardly hostile about being tough, Ginny was more sly about her methods. While Ahren enjoyed her company, she was an aspiring architect, he didn’t quite like her methods of sabtoge. Eady was the one who asked to have her stay because she recognised the ambition Ginny had.  Sabrina had lived her whole life in Clermont, she worked as a life guard and swimsuit model. She was the life of the party and Ahren admired her social skills when the various dignitaries had come to visit Illéa for the Annual World Peace Conference. She was able to charm even the stiff Germans and that was something the people needed in their Queen. While everyone knew Camille was the clear winner, Sabrina was well liked internationally.  Ace’s birth name was Jen but prefered to go by Ace and was from Carolina. Ahren had absolutely no words to describe her. The moment they met they hit it off and there was an instant connection but of course he supressed it for the sake of Camille. Ace was rather quiet but when prompted she would light up the room with her jokes and she was a singer working her way up like his mother once was. In every room she entered, you could hear her humming tunes, old and new. 

He shook his head, trying to keep Ace out of his head. He didn’t want to think about her. Not while he was arguing with Camille. She was still expecting his answer. He was at a loss for words.

“I like their company. They are nice girls who make good friends.” Was his lame excuse and Camille could only scoff. She was losing her patience. “They can be friends after you’ve ended the Selection.” Ahren’s eyes wandered around his room. That’s when Camille knew. She whispered it so softly he almost didn’t catch it.

“You love someone else.” She left so quickly he couldn’t catch her. “No, I love you!” He yelled after her but added quietly as an afterthought, “but I might love her more.” He sighed heavily and headed down to the opposite wing. He was hoping the particular Selected on his mind would still be up. He knocked on her door softly. He waited a few second before the door opened slightly and her face was visible through the gap. She rubbed her eyes tiredly but perked up when she saw who her guest was.  “Your Highness, may I help you?” He noticed something was off. She had short hair instead of her usual cockscrew curls and her voice was lower. In fact, Ahren  realised that she was not at all a she. Ace saw the prince’s facial expression and instantly realised his mistake. He forgot his wig and forgot to make his voice higher.  “Is this why you wanted to be called Ace instead of Jen?” The Prince was positively heartbroken and Ace knew what he had to do. He invited the Prince into his room and explained everything. He recounted how his sister Jen was Selected but she was terminally ill and she knew how Ace wanted to enter instead. Ace, like most of the country, has watched Ahren grown through the Report episodes and like most girls his age, Ace fell in love. So when Jen gave her blessing, Ace dressed like her and snuck in. 

“Now here we are. I’d understand if you wanted me to leave, your Highness.” Ace stood up to back his things when Ahren held his arm to stop him. While Ace had been talking, Ahren ran through all the memories they had made. Most of their dates consisted of walks in the gardens, getting to know each other and singing ensued at random points of the date. When the Germans had visited, Sabrina was able to charm them with easy going conversation but Ace stole the show with a rendition of a German folksong. He also got on very well with Maxon and America, even more than Camille ever did and something about the three of them bonding, sparked something in Ahren. Ahren thought long and hard about what he wanted to say to Ace. He finally found the words with the memories guiding him.

“I think I might feel the same. I actually came here to talk about it to you. Ever since The Selection began, I’ve always been comfortable talking to you. I’ve had my best memories with you. I realised I want to spend the rest of my life with you, making new memories. Even now, after I know you aren’t a girl, my feelings for you haven’t changed. Only problem is that everyone is counting on me to pick Camille.” Ace couldn’t believe what he was hearing. The Prince felt the same way but Illéa would never accept it. They were in progressive times but not that progressive. 

“I am really happy that you feel the way I do but Camille never lied to you. You should be with her.” Ace clasped their hands together one last time before getting up to leave. 

Tomorrow, he would be gone and Ahren was left to pick Camille.
