Before I begin this post, this is about SOME Caitlyn fans. SOME. From now on I will be posting a disclaimer before all of my posts because of SOME Arcane fans. This is a post on my opinions about SOME Caitlyn fans and Caitlyn herself. Let me make it clear that I do not hate Caitlyn and I truly blame the writers for how her character turned out in season 2, as I do with all the flaws in that second season, but that does not mean her character is free of criticism.

1. Complexity

Whenever anyone criticizes Caitlyn's character or flat out does not like her one of the many things her fans say is that "people can't handle complex women characters". Firstly and this is a general statement, a character being complex does not mean that they cannot be criticized and does not mean that everyone has to like that character. I don't know why some of you think that complexity means that no one can speak on the actions of a character but that is not what that means at all.

Secondly, when I think of a complex character I think of the definition of what a complex character is; when a character possess multiple, often contradictory, facets and undergo significant growth and change throughout the story. Based on Caitlyn's writing in that second season she falls short of a lot of those things and that not the fault of the character. Like a lot of other characters in Arcane season 2, Caitlyn was failed by the writers. Her story has so much potential but because things were rushed and the focus wasn't truly on developing these characters the way they deserved, Caitlyn true potential as a character wasn't truly recognized. She could have been very complex but she wasn't.

2. Everyone who dislikes Caitlyn is not a hater.

For a lot of people, specifically POC and Black fans of Arcane, Caitlyn's character is unlikeable because her actions in season 2 and her being an enforcer is a representation of something that they do not like and should not have to be silenced when speaking openly about. Besides the fact that she's essentially a cop character and she did things like enact Marshall law and gas a city, they also got to witness SOME of her fans call Reed Shannon racial slurs on Twitter for making a joke about her character being a cop.

Oppression is a fictional thing that only exists in Arcane. It's a real life issue that black/poc people experience everyday of their lives so if they don't like Caitlyn Kiramman, I'm sure they have valid reasons for not liking her character.

3. Not every who dislikes Caitvi is homophobic.

Caitvi's relationship would have been so much better had they been better written but they were also failed by the writers. From one of the writers admitted that they got bored of Vi's character and so they simply forgot about her to Amanda saying that they used oppression to help push the ships story, Caitvi in season 2 had no solid ground to develop into something beautiful on.

The sex scene between Caitlyn and Vi being done right after Vi's sister almost committed suicide in the exact same cell was done in poor taste and Amanda saying that it was supposed to be Vi getting over her trauma and reclaiming her life and desires outside of Jinx, even though had they put more effort into writing Vi and actually addressing her trauma then they wouldn't have had to use a sex scene in a prison cell to relay that in the first place. The scene was no romantic, it was not beautiful and it was odd to have it done right after the situation with Jinx happened.

And don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with having that type of scene happen between Caitlyn and Vi but I feel like had the writers actually put the effort into truly developing Caitlyn and Vi's relationship and didn't use things like oppression to help catapult the ship to where they wanted it to be, that sex scene could've actually have been beautifully done.

On another note, it was very obvious that Maddie was used as a plot device for Caitvi's relationship. She was literally written to be hated. Unlike side characters in the first season that had a level or nuance and purpose to them, Maddie was used to bring in Caitvi angst, she was exposed as a spy to take the heat of Caitlyn and then she was killed off when she no longer served a purpose. Arcane season 2 had a lot of side characters that were there for all but 10 seconds and then gone the next when they no longer served a purpose.

4. Whether SOME of you want to acknowledge it or not, gas spreads. I don't know why some of you think that just because Caitlyn was targeting chembarons that that means that the gas specifically went after who was being targeted. Gas isn't a controlled substance it can get through cracks, holes and other openings. Vi herself also stated that it was used to clear the streets.

I'm not sure why some of fans continue to try and refute this but it's ridiculous way of thinking at this point.

5. Redemption and Consequences

One of the things that I see people frequently say is that Caitlyn redeemed herself because she gave up her council seat and she lost an eye. That's not redemption. She lost her eye during a fight with Ambessa and giving Zaun one council really didn't help a city that didn't even get liberation at the end of the day. When it was all said and done Caitlyn's character didn't actually face any consequences nor did she experience an actual redemption arc. She got a happy ending without truly working towards it.

6. Racism, Misogyny and death threats being used to defend her. To say that Caitlyn's character is woman of color is ironic when you realize how much SOME of her fans use racism and misogyny to defend her. Besides the situation with Reed Shannon, SOME Caitlyn stans have used slurs against poc/black Arcane fans who make posts criticizing her, have used misogynistic language against other women fans who have don't speak favorably about her and have even sent other fans death threats in defense of her.

There is no excuse or reason on this planet to be racist, misogynistic, homophobic or to send other human beings death threats over Arcane simply because they do not like or care for a character or ship that you do. It makes me think about a black man who made a tiktok post talking about how most of Caitlyn's defenders tend to be white while her criticizers tend to be poc/black people and sometimes it really puts things into perspective. It's not a good look at all.

All in all, Caitlyn's biggest issue isn't her, its the side of her fans that cannot handle her being criticized or disliked. It's the side of her fans who resort to slurs and disparaging language to defend her and its the writers who cared more about their own desires even it came at the cost of giving Caitlyn, Vi and their relationship the kind of care and attention they truly needed.
