Currently on view at Arcadia Contemporary in New York City is artist Aron Wiesenfeld's must see, extraordinary solo exhibition, "The Gardener."
Wiesenfeld's captivating artwork immerses viewers in atmospheric spaces brimming with an air of melancholy and a profound sense of solitude. His masterfully crafted scenes showcase dimly lit, enigmatic landscapes where the urban and the wild intersect, creating a sense of liminality. Characters often find themselves on the cusp of a mysterious abyss, seemingly lost in introspection.
Wiesenfeld's evocative compositions, which draw from his background as a comic book illustrator, skillfully intertwine elements of romanticism and mystery. His works primarily focus on isolated figures set in natural landscapes or desolate urban streets, all deeply inspired by his childhood town of Santa Cruz. He considers each piece an open invitation for viewers to weave their own narratives, inviting them to dive into the enigmatic scenes and explore the intricate emotions and stories they may evoke.

Paleobedforms across Arcadia Planitia
The surface of Mars hosts numerous occurrences of sedimentary rocks, some of which formed by wind or fluvial processes in an earlier era. This image reveals extensive wind-driven bedforms in the craters that occupy the smooth plains of Arcadia Planitia. These bedforms exhibit rippled textures with distinct crests that appear to bifurcate or merge, while yielding crest spacing analogous to contemporary Martian megaripples.
However, these are not modern wind-driven bedforms, but rather ancient ones. A closer look shows a lack of meter-scale ripples, occasional inter-crest boulders, and steep overhanging edges of the deposit that demonstrate inactivity and lithification. While prior surveys have shown hundreds of these paleo-megaripple fields across the region, this single image contains nearly two dozen.

@outofthiisworld JUNKER STARTER
♫
There was someone. Or something in the rafters.
The gunfire illuminated it at first-- it was a human. Viridian lenses gave his aviator's goggles a wide-eyed, unblinking quality. With both arms, he could lift a heavyset adult overhead, and still spare enough force to toss them.
For Ophelia Peekaboo, the Playful Phantomime, that was nothing to her ectoplasmic abilities. She was a modern day superbeing. And this was a precursor to the contemporary heroes and their more miraculous feats. His exploits, the kind they used to sell by the dime in mystery magazines and a thirty-minute chapter every Saturday at the matinee movie theater, just before a main feature of some sort. Maybe even fan clubs with decoder rings and their own ID cards.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/edc84ab72e03387a3250f408e763994a/fc03a1ab1ff44d0e-04/s250x250_c1/7039174a366175ce5fc441e5799cb0792fe1bc27.jpg)
"The early bird... gets the worm."
It's an attempt to be jovial. This so-called Archangel of Arcadia really didn't mean to be inhospitable. But he might as well have been hosting a horror movie marathon, or a pulse-pounding radio play anthology. Theatrical, but ultimately unwelcoming. Even when he was trying to reassure those caught in the crossfire.
In any case, Peekaboo was face-to-face with The Junker!

I am considering getting into Life is Strange. What should I know? Is there a nice fandom on Tumblr for it? Also, is having an OC for Life is Strange a thing/normal?
Welcome!!! Happy New Year! Wow, I am so honored you chose my blog to ask. I’m so excited for my first LiS initiation of sorts 😄
I think the best place to get a rundown of the series is its page on TV Tropes, but here’s my attempt at laying out the essential facts:
Life is Strange is sort of the YA/New Adult genre of video games. It’s not quite slice of life, not quite realistic fiction mystery, and not quite sci-fi, but a distinct blend of all three. It’s very light on gameplay and similar to Telltale’s point-and-click choose your own adventure games. Players walk around, interact with objects, go through dialogue trees, solve puzzles, and make choices that affect the story. All the games are set in modern day United States and feature a young protagonist who suddenly gains supernatural powers, though there’s more focus on character relationships over sci-fi lore. The series has become known for its queer/POC representation, licensed soundtracks, and emotional stories, up there with games like The Last of Us, Night in the Woods, Oxenfree, and The Walking Dead.
Life is Strange (2015) is the first and most popular game in the series. It was created by Dontnod, a French studio, and published by Square Enix. It stars Max Caulfield, an 18 year old photography student at a boarding school in Arcadia Bay, OR. She discovers she has time travel powers after saving the life of a girl she later learns is her estranged childhood friend, Chloe Price, and they reunite to solve the disappearance of Rachel Amber and figure out Max’s sudden visions of an apocalyptic storm. The game covers themes like queer romance, nostalgia, gun violence, domestic abuse, grief, bullying, teen suicide, and sexual assault, and it’s really what put LiS on the map for being so original and different from other games of its time.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm (2017) is a direct prequel starring Chloe and Rachel three years before the events of Life is Strange (LiS1). It was not made by Dontnod but instead Deck Nine, an American studio, and recast Chloe due to a VA strike happening at the time. It was generally well received for its queer rep and handling of Chloe’s character.
Life is Strange 2 (2018-2019) is made by Dontnod. It is NOT a sequel to the first game, and instead stars Sean and Daniel Diaz, young Mexican-American brothers who are forced to run away from home after a tragic supernatural accident. After Dontnod made LiS1, they stated they intended for LiS to become an anthology series. LiS2 covers themes like racism, police brutality, homelessness, brotherhood, religious trauma, queer identity, and Trump-era politics. Reception at the time was extremely mixed, but the game still has its dedicated fans.
Life is Strange: True Colors (2021) was made by Deck Nine (who essentially took over the series). It stars Alex Chen, an Asian American young woman who leaves foster care to start a new life in Haven Springs, CO, but has to solve a murder mystery with her psychic empathic powers. The game covers themes like foster care, trauma, familial abuse, grief, queer romance, classism, and racism, but more lightly than LiS2. It managed to win back some original fans because it was set in one place and its story resembled LiS1’s more than LiS2.
Life is Strange: Double Exposure (2024) IS a direct sequel by Deck Nine starring Max a decade after the events of the first game, now with reality-shifting powers. Time will tell how it’s received and what might come next.
Overall: if you like contemporary stories, sci-fi and/or magical realism, queer themes, representation of marginalized identities, character-driven stories, environmental storytelling, indie music, and tearjerkers, then you’ll enjoy this series.
Hmm… so Life is Strange was enormously popular on Tumblr a decade ago because it came out at the height of Tumblr’s popularity and gained a cult following for its queer female representation. The fandom fractured when Life is Strange 2 proved to be extremely divisive and it hasn’t reached the levels of activity that LiS1 achieved since then. I’ve generally had a positive and chill experience on Tumblr since 2020 after LiS2 ended and TC won back some of the original crowd, but I can’t speak for everyone.
I’ve never seen anyone creating OC’s in the LiS universe besides AU’s and fanfic, and I’ve never seen self-insert characters outside of fanfic. Life is Strange is contemporary and set in the real world, and it doesn’t have a super distinct art style (especially since D9’s art direction is different from DN), so it’s different from, say, a Spidersona or something.
Thank you so much for asking!

I'm curious: how do Gallifreyans perceive relationships/ marriages? Are they in general more loyal or are they more polyamorous? Do they have specific rituals like we humans? Does such things even matter to such a highly advanced species?
Gallifreyan Love
🔗 Cultural Norms and Practices
On Gallifrey, the idea of relationships is intertwined with a deeply rooted sense of duty and a hierarchical societal structure. Relationships, especially among the higher echelons of Time Lord society, serve more purpose as strategic alliances than expressions of personal affection. As you can imagine, the extended lifespans of Gallifreyans, coupled with their capability for regeneration, add a few more layers of complexity - imagine getting a divorce 500 years in, and having to separate that CD collection.
The influence of the Curse of the Pythia, which rendered the majority of Gallifreyans sterile and thus made sex pointless in a practical way, has historically shaped Gallifrey's approaches to relationships. The emergence of "loomed" Time Lords pivoted their species towards asexuality, and many Gallifreyans were celibate as a societal norm. However, Low Town does have a couple of brothels, so make of that what you will.
💍 Dating and Marriage Conventions
Despite the strategic nature of many Gallifreyan relationships, marriages born of love are not unheard of. The rituals surrounding marriage, however, are pretty obscure. We don't know much beyond the tradition of donning white - a colour symbolising death on Gallifrey - suggesting marriage is like death, or something(?)
The act of courtship among Gallifreyans is another big question mark. While traditional "date nights" as understood by humans might not align with Gallifreyan practices, their society does have plenty of date locations, from the dives of Low Town to the posh restaurants of Arcadia.
🔄 Monogamy vs. Polyamory
Due to their extended lifespans and regenerative capabilities, the concept of lifetime commitment can stretch across centuries and several physical forms. This unique condition creates a social fabric where both monogamous and polyamorous relationships can thrive, each serving different purposes and reflecting individual preferences.
Monogamy: For some Gallifreyans, especially those in positions of political or social prominence, a monogamous relationship might symbolise a stable alliance or a deeply personal bond that persists through regenerations.
Polyamory: On the other hand, the very nature of Gallifreyan society lends itself to more fluid relationship structures. Polyamorous relationships, in this context, might be strategic, forming networks of support, influence, and mutual benefit among different Houses or factions.
🏫 Modern Interpretations
In contemporary times, society is still adapting to the shifting political landscape and the return of biological reproduction. The deeply ingrained traditions of the old may be giving way to new forms of personal expression and connection. Yet, for all the advancements and changes, Gallifrey remains a society where duty and tradition wield significant influence and probably will for a long time to come.
Hope that helped! 😃

Book Blurb:
I locked away my magic and ran from home for a good reason. So why am I ready to undo everything when my demon ex finally tracks me down?
You can’t outrun your demons—McKenna Ellerbeck knows this all too well. She’s been running from literal demons for a decade, one that will stop at nothing to take McKenna’s magic for their own and one that shattered her heart by grasping for dark power. After a horrible run-in with hellhounds on the streets of Paris, McKenna is ready to hide again when she’s confronted by her ex, the Archdemon of Desire Remiel Blake. Remi, the sexiest of gender-shifting demons, calls in an old debt that McKenna owes her, though unlike other deals the terms of fulfillment are simple: all she needs to do is return to her hometown of Arcadia Commons, Massachusetts, for seven days. Disgruntled and disguised at her own insistence, McKenna returns home to the magical community, intent on simply staying in her hotel room watching pay-per-view. But with her high school reunion conveniently happening in the same hotel she’s staying at—the one owned by her ex-boyfriend Bastien Lemaire—and her brother mysteriously picking fights with the town’s most prominent witch family, she finds she can’t stay away for long and decides it’s finally time to face her past and the witches, werewolves, demons, and friends she left behind.
If you miss Supernatural, True Blood, or Buffy, you'll love this sexy and magical contemporary fantasy from a marvelous new voice in fiction, Katie Hallahan!
Review:
When your ex is the demon of lust drags you back to your high school reunion to face everyone you left behind after an incident that ended in the death of your best friend... you do not expect to face off against another demon or to possibly get back together with your hot demon ex. The first book in a series, the story follows McKenna Ellerback, a woman running from her past, from her hot demon ex, and from her own magic. McKenna made a mistake... something that ended in the death of her best friend and now she's been on the run ever since, yet when she has a horrible run in with hellhounds she is saved by the very ex she's been running away from for the past decade, the Archdemon of Desire, Remiel "Remi" blake. Remi is as tempting as she is cunning... and McKenna owes her and she is here to collect..., in the form of McKenna returning back to her hometown of Arcadia Commons for seven days to attend their high school reunion. McKenna doesn't want any part of that, she doesn't want to face her other ex or any of the friends she's abandoned.... yet strane things are happening that has her drawn back into facing her past and her friends.... and maybe her own feelings for Remi. This was definitely a fun paranormal read filled with drama, friendship troubles, relationship healing, demons, and more! It's a fun first book in the series and I am so curious where the second book goes and how McKenna and Remi's relationship will be in the second book! McKenna and Remi are definitely interesting characters and their relationship was really fun to read, from high school lovers to exes... and to something more. Remi is a really fun love interest and I was so rooting for her the entire time. I definitely think you should pick up this book if you are looking for a fun sapphic paranormal romance with drama and mystery!

For your ask request—an adult queer contemp. romance (preferably sapphic) that doesn't have a gimmicky setup (i.e. they're "forced" to work together for some weird reason, etc. etc.)
If that's more specific than you meant, than just rec me anything! :)
haha you kinda got me there, cause I don't read a whole lot of romance and I haven't read much contemporary recently either. I think the last one I read was One Last Stop several years ago, and I really didn't like it due to the immense amounts of exhibitionism and full on fucking in a crowded train car which like, I know it's fictional but still makes me livid because no one else is consenting to be in this situation you assholes.
ANYWAY! A couple of similar-but-not-exact recs instead:
Tripping Arcadia by Kit Mayquist - modern-day gothic horror about a med student who goes to work for a wealthy family and becomes embroiled in their secrets. not super gimmicky, and with a little romance at the end. Has a queer MC and a queer/trans author.
Reluctant Immortals by Gwendolyn Kiste - horror set in the late 60s, the story follows 2 women who were made immortal by their ex-lovers and have been hiding out in California. They must confront their past in order to finally move forward. Queer romance.
White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link - okay, these are fairy tales retellings so they are kind of gimmicky, but they're really weird for one, and several are set in the modern day and feature queer romances.

Harold Barclay
I am very pleased to have received some substantial comments from Harold Barclay: professor emeritus in anthropology at the University of Alberta and author of The State, Buurri al Lamaab: A Suburban Village in the Sudan, Culture: The Human Way, The Role of the Horse in Man’s Culture, People without Government: An Anthropology of Anarchy, Culture and Anarchism, and Longing for Arcadia: Memoirs of an Anarcho-Cynicalist Anthropologist.
Thanks for sending me your essay on the Iroquois, It appears to be a very good piece of research, although I am not an Iroquois specialist. I have the following comments: First, one has to be extremely careful in using myths and oral traditions as data. Too often they are polished up to fit a contemporary view of propriety or someones idea of correctness. Second, and more important I suspect that you have greatly overestimated the density of population. The density you report as 200 per acre refers only to the inhabitants of the towns and does not encompass the surrounding garden area or hunting grounds. Iroquois depended entirely on wild game for meat and this would require a large area around any town. for hunting (Hunter gatherers — non gardeners- usually require 5–10 square miles per person. It would be more dense for horticulturalists but not enormously more). Then if they had, as reported, a million bushels of corn in reserves this would require 5000 acres in addition to all the other corn grown as well as squash and beans. I suspect that this ultimately means clearly less than 50 per square mile- a figure which could still make Iroquois a more densely populated area than others although one should not forget fishing specialists such as the New England Coast or the West Coast of Canada and the Alaskan Panhandle, nor the horticultural and cattle herding stateless societies in Africa. Third, I have found little mention of the role of Mothers brother in the Iroquois literature. In Matrilineal societies with which I am most familiar the Mother’s Brother has a considerable amount of authority and.power. Indeed in several African Matrilineal (and avunculocal) societies he is the boss. Malinowski, of course, used the MB in matrilineal Trobriand society as an argument against Freud and his claims for an Oedipus Complex. Fourth, on Indians and anarchism: Clearly a sort of state structure with elected chiefs and councils has been imposed upon most Indian groups and they appear to now accept this as only proper. I suppose they may be embarrased if you point out that they once had an anarchistic arrangement. Dene of the Canadian NWT have as I understand it at least achieved in some ways a consensual arrangement in their political system. Fifth, Iroquois may be viewed as stateless by some and as a proto-state by others ( perhaps the latter are thinking in terms of unilineal evolution from savagery to state). In any case it is difficult to find a more densely populated(urbanized) group who are not state ridden. In my book, The State, I suggested that state development would be more unlikely in a complex society in which property, hierarchy, and an ideology supportive of these were not stressed.(p.92). A recent book, Ancient Middle Niger: Urbanism and the Self-Organizing Landscape by Roderick J. McIntosh, suggests statelessness in an urban setting. I however have found the book difficult to read.
My response to Harold Barclay
The oral traditions on the foundation of the league are inconsistent in a number of ways and vary from nation to nation, speaker to speaker—as might be expected. I think this is a point that Bonaparte makes very well with his “Living History”. Bonaparte even acknowledges that the study of Iroquois culture by anthropologists/ethnographers has likely had an effect on the oral tradition. He has a very funny quip about every modern traditionalist having a dog-eared copy of Arthur Parker’s work.
To me, what was not so fascinating was not so much whether Tekanawí:ta was of a virgin birth, came across the lake on a stone canoe, or that he combed the serpents from the sorcerer Thatotáhrho’s hair. Rather it was the political metaphors that are shared across the confederation. This seems to be consistent and also corresponds with the historical record. While it would be nice to have several historical records about the formation of the Rotinonshón:ni, we can only go on oral tradition, historical transcription of earlier oral tradition, archeology and some linguistics to get an idea. Among the many controversies about the formation of the Rotinonshón:ni is when it happened. That’s a debate I didn’t address in my article, for this article it was more important that it did happen and before large degree (if any) of European contact.
Also, I think it is also interesting in terms of the modern Rotinonshón:ni, to look at what narrative they use today, and what meaning that has; regardless of the actual events some 400–1000 years ago.
I agree with your comments on population density. The population density estimate I used was Daniel Richter’s from Ordeal of the Longhouse. If I had space in the article, I would have liked to have liked to have gone into more detail about their economy, and how extensive their use of the land was. I would have preferred to have listed population estimates from pre-contact; but that is quite difficult do the their periodic village relocations, their reliance on wooden architecture, and that population estimates during the colonial period are based on the estimated number of warriors and that is after those communities were devastated by diseases of European orgin and warfare. There are high counters and low counters in terms of population. The number of people living in a particular Iroquois town, however, was a more solid estimate. I also would have preferred to have had estimates on the quantity of agricultural production before the small pox and the Beaver Wars, but I haven’t seen anything as solid as the historical estimates made during the Sullivan campaign almost two hundreds years after contact.
You make an excellent point about mother’s brothers and something I would like to explore further. The roiá:ner (sachem) were selected by the iakoiá:ner (clan mothers) from their matrilineal line (their brothers, uncles and sons). The exact role of husbands seems very murky to me except that society was matrilocal. Among the other requirements for Roiá:ner was that they were to have been fathers. So how would this work? A wolf clan brother who would then marry into the bear clan, have children with his bear clan wife, but then could later be chosen as a wolf clan roiá:ner while still living in the bear clan long house?
Given the different modes of food production and the segregation of duties by gender, it seems that men would often spend many months away from the towns in villages—engaged in fishing, hunting, trapping, trade, diplomacy and warfare. Among the customs of cohabitation were husbands and wives sleeping on opposite sides of the fire from each other, and sleeping feet to feet rather than side by side. If you are interested in some of the psychology around the Iroquois traditional culture... I found Anthony F.C. Wallace’s The Death and Rebirth of the Seneca to be very informative.
The matrilocal residency was probably disrupted by disease, war and mass adoptions. With as many as 2/3rds of the community being adoptees in many cases. This would have been an aberration in the traditional culture. The european born diseases and changes in warfare would have been an unprecedented calamity to Iroquois society. I think it is very notable about how well that culture was able to survive with even a remnant of their traditional polity, to have blocked French expansion and held their own in the face of English colonization for so long.
Also, the matrilocal situation was disrupted first by conversion to Christianity, and later Handsome Lake’s religious teachings that emphasized patrilocal living and the husband-wife bond over the matrilineal clan. There was also a change in living arrangements from the colonial period from long houses to single family cabins.
On your point concerning anarchism and contemporary state structures of elected chiefs and councils among indigenous communities; I’m sure it might cause some embarrassment to some statists. While I cautiously avoided addressing the contemporary political situation among the Iroquois, this tension between statists and anti-statists (and positions in between) is very much part of the political discourse, though the terms they use are sometimes different. Something for them to figure out. As someone with anarchist (or at least libertarian socialist) sensibilities... I find the traditional polity of the Iroquois fascinating and... close enough—it’s as good an example of a way of living as any others that anarchists point to. Though one could argue that the break down in their consensual politics lead to a lack of unity and their division and fragmentation due to the U.S., British and Canadian governments.
I was actually fairly careful in having contemporary Iroquois like Taiaiake Alfred make that connection between the traditional polity and anarchism; as well as having folks like Teiowí:sonte Thomas Deer explicitly reject it. However, I suspect that Teiowí:sonte is far more sympathetic to an anti-authoritarian socialism than that quotation reveals. I imagine someone like Ray Halbritter, the National Representative of the Onedia Nation and Chief Executive Officer of Oneida Nation Enterprises, will just flat out reject such an idea. If my article generates any discussion among Iroquois about such things, I’ll regard that as a welcome but unintended consequence. I saw my article as an anarchists examination of the traditional Iroquois polity, not a polemic for neo-traditionalist Iroquois to adopt anarchism as an ideology.
I actually haven’t read your book The State yet. Only People without Government and Culture and Anarchism. I see it was just published in 2003, so that’s definitely going on my list. Right now, I’m wading through Pierre Clastres’ Society Against the State, but I find the language a bit difficult and I also lack the academic background in anthropology and philosophy. I think I’ll try your book before I tackle McIntosh.

Robert Cunninghame-Graham 1st President of National Party of Scotland and the first MP to call himself a socialist died 20th March 1936.
To me Robert Cunninghame-Graham is one of the most interesting of our 19th/20th century politicians.
please just like the post as a historical entity, and just dinnae........
Cunninghame Graham was an author, traveller explorer, politician and adventurer, he was a man of extraordinary talents, tireless energy and considerable courage. His friend and contemporary Joseph Conrad remarked, “When I think of Cunninghame Graham, I feel as though I have lived all my life in a dark hole without seeing or knowing anything.” and I have to agree with him, I use the term Polymath now and then for some subjects I post about, he was that, and more.
Born in London in 1852, educated at Harrow, but always, always, a Scot to his marrow, Cunninghame Graham was a descendant of the Earls of Menteith and the son of a laird whose lands eventually extended from Gartmore in Stirlingshire to Ardoch in Dunbartonshire and Finlaystone in Renfrewshire. It was there that Robert was largely brought up, coming heavily under the influence of his Spanish grandmother.
After schooling, at Harrow, Robert finished his education in Brussels, Belgium, learning, among other things, the art of swordsmanship at which he became an expert.
In a crowded life — Cunninghame Graham was variously a Member of Parliament, a gaucho in South America, a fencing master, a founder member of both the Independent Labour Party and the Scottish National Party, a rancher, horse-trainer, buffalo hunter and Long Rider through North and South America — he wrote prolifically. He called himself, "Don Roberto,". He also enjoyed a journey into Morocco, disguised as an Arab Sheik, he was, as they say, some man!
In 1872 Cunninghame Graham rode on horseback 600 miles up the river Parana to the Iguacu Falls, researching the role of the early Jesuits with the local Indians. His subsequent book, A Vanished Arcadia, was made into a film, The Mission starring Jeremy Irons. He lived for a time in Argentina, where his extended family had a ranch, by way of Uruguay and Paraguay. He became an expert horseman, riding with gauchos, and his admiration for these men was such that he often wore gaucho clothes when back home, he must have been quite a sight!
He wrote that one day on a knoll in the pampas he met a man who greeted him in halting Spanish. Cunninghame Graham suggested he speak in English and referred to the view. The man, said, perhaps hearing a Scots accent for the first time in 20 years, “Aye, but man, it’s naething tae the view off Dumyat.”
Don Roberto married to an equally colourful and talented woman that he met in Paris, Gabrielle de la Balmondiere, who had been described as a Chilean princess. In fact, she was an actress called Caroline Horsfall, who went on to be a published poet. Among her many admirers was WB Yeats.
His contact with poor people everywhere made him a socialist before that term was even coined. On returning from South America, he rapidly took up political campaigning and in 1886, there being no Labour Party, he stood on a radical ticket for the Liberals in North West Lanarkshire, winning comfortably.
On 12th September 1887 he was suspended from parliament for making what was called a "disrespectful reference" to the House of Lords. He was the first MP ever to be suspended from the House of Commons for swearing; the word was damn.
He was suspended from the House of Commons in December 1888 for protesting about the working conditions of chain makers. His response to the Speaker of the House, "I never withdraw", was later used by George Bernard Shaw in Arms and the Man.
He truly was a courageous man – in 1887, he was beaten up badly by police at the original Bloody Sunday in Trafalgar Square and was jailed for six weeks.
His leftward move and meetings with James Keir Hardie led him to co-found the Scottish Labour Party with Keir Hardie, but has been largely airbrushed out of the history of the party, due to his Scottish Nationalist views.
Its manifesto included nationalisation of land and minerals, an eight-hour day, State insurance, the abolition of the House of Lords and all hereditary offices, home rule for Scotland, the abolition of the liquor tariff and the disestablishment of State Churches.
Yet Labour disappointed him, don’t they always, and after World War One – he volunteered a the age of 62 and became a horse-buyer for the Army – his growing nationalism saw him become president of the National Party of Scotland, the forerunner of the SNP. On 23rd June, 1928, in the King’s Park, Stirling, he presided at its inaugural rally.
He was friends with everyone from Buffalo Bill Cody to George Bernard Shaw, had his portrait painted by Sir John Lavery, knew the Glasgow Boys cirlce of artists personally, was close friends with the writers Joseph Conrad and G.K Chesterton, and generally personified the word kenspeckle. A writer of over 30 books himself, there is a seat dedicated to Cunninghame Graham in the Scottish Storytelling Centre in Edinburgh with the inscription: "R B 'Don Roberto' Cunninghame Graham of Gartmore and Ardoch,
Few Scots actually know of yer man, but In Entre Rios, in the north east of Argentina is the Instituto Magnasco, in Gualeguaychu (pronounced Wally-wy-chew) there is a Cunninghame Graham library and museum! His books are available there to read on the premises, and the Smith’s library is based on that facility.
The Journalist and author, the late Rennie of the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum wrote a booklet about Robert Cunninghame-Graham, called Braw Gallant, he wrote of the man : “He was a pioneer of socialism and Scottish nationalism, fought unemployment and poverty, backed the rights of native peoples against colonialism and short-sighted development, supported free speech, was an active conservationist, got caught up in the Irish question, attacked brutal wars when it was not fashionable to do so and was prepared to die or be imprisoned for his beliefs.
“The words knightly and chivalrous come to mind.”
Robert Cunninghame-Graham retired to Argentina, where he continued to be active, he would still ride daily while in his 80′s, he died on this day in 1936 of pneumonia at the Plaza Hotel in Retiro. Such was his standing he lay in state in the Casa del Teatro and received a countrywide tribute led by the President of the Republic of Argentina, before his body was shipped home to be buried beside his wife, in the ruined Augustinian Priory on the island of Inchmahome, Lake of Menteith, Stirlingshire. There is a memorial to him at at Castlehill, Dumbarton. The monument, which is built of Scottish stone, but also contains stones from Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Between these stones is a medallion of Cunninghame Graham (in his latter years) by the Liverpool born artist Alexander Proudfoot, RSA, who taught sculpture at Glasgow School of Art. Below the medallion is an epitaph which reads:
"Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham 1852-1936 - Famous Author - Traveller and Horseman - Patriotic Scot and Citizen of the World - As Betokened by the Stones above. Died in Argentina, interred in Inchamahome - He Was a Master of Life - A King Among Men"
On the Argentinian stone, there is a portrait of his favourite horse Pampa, an Argentine mustang which he had rescued from pulling trams in Glasgow and rode for some 20 years and the inscription:
"To Pampa my black Argentine who I rode for twenty years without a fall. May the earth lie light upon him as lightly as he trod upon its face. Vale...or until so long. Don Roberto."
One of Pampa's hooves is buried beneath the monument.
The monument suffered considerable damage through vandalism during the 1970s and was moved in May 1981 to the village of Gartmore (where, until 1900, Gartmore House had been the principal seat of the Cunninghame Graham family), and was unveiled on Cunninghame Graham's birthday (24 May) by the Argentinian Ambassador. It is currently in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. Despite the removal of the monument to Gartmore, the Cunninghame Graham Memorial Park at Castlehill is affectionately known as "the Mony" and the original site of the Memorial marked by a stone.
In 2012 the National Trust for Scotland carried out significant conservation work on the monument which was completed in time for the 160th anniversary of Cunninghame Graham's birth. A new stone was added to commemorate another of Don Roberto's horses, Pingo, and a new information panel was placed nearby, as seen in the photos, the painting is Don Roberto on Pampas, and recently sold at Christies for over 31 thousand pounds.
The pics are my own from a visit to Kelvingrove Art Gallery last month.

(Hmmm, fiction. And YA would be okay. And romance, historical, thriller, mystery, fantasy, horror, are all okay. As for tropes, like scenarios? I'm not that picky.)
I will always suggest anything written by S.T. Gibson, namely and especially, A Dowry of Blood. It's a retelling / account of Dracula's brides as told from the perspective of Constanta, the first in the novella. The formatting gives people pause, but I always urge anyone who might be interested to give it a worthy shot! I personally like that it's written in such a way that it's like reading a letter or journal. It is written in 1st person POV, by that nature, but it flows so perfectly. It is also one of few in which the Audiobook sounds INCREDIBLE and fits the narration style. I have yet to finish it because I fell into a reading slump but one of Saint's newest releases is Evocation - which is truly AMAZING!
DOWRY = Gothic fiction / Horror fiction / Fantasy fiction / Vampire fiction / Romantic fantasy. EVOCATION = Fantasy fiction / Urban fantasy / Gothic fiction / Paranormal fiction / Contemporary fantasy.
Kit Mayquist wrote an exquisite novel titled Tripping Arcadia with eat-the-rich vibes! It's brimming with drama, hidden secrets, and questions of modern class and status. It's considered Gothic fiction as well as being categorized under suspense and thriller. It's got Great Gatsby vibes, but like, darker!
Weep, Woman, Weep : Ancestral hauntings anyone? This is a gothic fairytale surrounding a young woman seeking freedom from curses, trauma, and grief. The story takes place in a small town in New Mexico, and if you haven't guessed it already, heavily follows / includes La Llorona's haunting(s). It is categorized as Horror fiction / Metaphysical fiction / Fantasy fiction / and a few others.
The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein : This novel follows Elizabeth Lavenza and the harrowing journey and complicated ties she holds to the Frankenstein family, specifically, to Victor himself. They become nearly inseparable. . . but all things come at a price. This story is categorized as Young adult / horror / supernatural horror / psychological thriller / historical fiction retellings.
Honorable mentions for: If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio, Vicious by V.E. Schwab, Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente, The Folk of the Air series by Holly Black, A Darker Shade of Magic series by V.E. Schwab, and These Violent Delights [ the dark, gay, adult one, not the YA one ]. I would be here forever if I kept going, however, so! We will stop here. . .
NOTE: PLEASE READ THESE STORIES AT YOUR OWN DISCRETION AND BE SURE TO CHECK CONTENT / TRIGGER WARNINGS ACCORDINGLY!! Most of these are DARK. . .
