Samuel “Sami” Zayn is the biggest little shit you will ever meet, and you can’t help but think he’s proud of that. Outside of that, it’s known that he’s the keeper of the Forbidden Archives at The Hallowed Grounds of The Great Matriarch. Not much else about Sami is known for certain. He has no known family, claiming to have been raised in an orphanage in the South. (Mexico.) Supposedly he ran away at the age of 13 to travel north for an education but, as high-ranked an official as he claims to be, he looks far younger than he should. And don’t bother asking for his age, he’ll never tell you. Actually, he won’t answer most questions posed to him; despite working in a library, he’s not very forthcoming with any information.  

It’s obvious he has a gift for reading people, but how much of it is deduction and how much is telepathy isn’t clear. He definitely knows things he shouldn’t but then, being the keeper of the banned books, he would. As far as personality goes, he’s probably the nicest jerk in the world. It’s easy to see he views himself as the smartest person in any room he’s in but he’s never cruel about it. Mostly he’s just the sort of person who will drive you nuts, but you find yourself liking him despite yourself. At least, that’s how Ruth views him. 

Kevin, meanwhile, thinks Sami is the most wonderful person in the world and by the time Ruth meets them, the couple has been dating (in secret) for two years. That alone is cause for concern. Malamators (Homosexuals) are heavily persecuted in this world but being classified as a sexual deviant on top of possessing seemingly supernatural abilities and being a self-admitted non-Christian, it’s probably a good thing that Sami is so secretive.  

It’s the only thing keeping him alive. 

His Confirmation/Saint name is Esteban, the Spanish version of Stephen. He claims he didn’t choose it and that he isn’t fond of most of the Saints named Stephen but then, how would he possibly know what they were like? So many questions and so few answers...

Sebastian Darke

(He may not be appearing in the books for a while, but his presence is going to be felt in the story regardless. In fact, he has already touched the life of a major character... So let’s introduce you all to the overarching villain of the series)

In 666 A.D., in a little village in Europe that no longer exists, a boy was born to a virgin mother after a strangely short pregnancy. This was universally seen by the village as a miracle, and a sign of good things to come. As the child grew, the village fawned over the child, practically worshipping him and viewing him as their claim to fame.

One day when the boy was 13, a mysterious man arrived. He claimed to be the boy’s father, and that he was impressed with how he had the entire village wrapped around his finger. He promised that if he were to simply make a small sacrifice, the boy would never want for anything ever again. Power, money, immortality... It would all be his. The boy agreed to these terms, and so razed the village to the ground, the villagers singing his praises even as he offered them up to be slaughtered.

This is, as the legends say, the origin of Sebastian Darke.

Darke is known as the most powerful dark spellcaster in all of history, and is head of a cult who seek to bring back the Old Gods, powerful deities from ancient times who had unimaginable power and rebelled against humanity. To this end, he and his cult seek the pages of the True Necronomicon, the original book of dark magic transcribed from ancient ruins by Abd al-Azrad AKA “The Mad Arab.” It is said the pages were scattered to the winds by al-Azrad to prevent Darke from gaining the forbidden knowledge within them, as he had come to understand the horrors that would have been unleashed from his writing. For this defiant act, Darke had him torn asunder in broad daylight before his family and his hometown.

Darke is most famous for being nigh unkillable. He is able to overtake the body of any human and transform their body into his in the event of one of his bodies dying, a feat no other spellcaster has ever been able to replicate. The stronger a person’s will, the harder it is for him to transform them into himself, but he has never failed in this. It is believed by many that this skill is one he learned from the True Necronomicon, and the ability is simply not one that made it into the countless knockoff tomes that flood the black markets of the world. This is supported by autopsies of his bodies showing nothing out of the ordinary. Still, rumors persist that there is more to him than that.

His other notable skill is golem creation, which he learned from the great masters of Prague. Unfortunately, he took their teachings and used them to make golems out of a rather gruesome material: Human flesh. He regularly desecrates the corpses of the fallen to make flesh golems, twisting bone and muscle into nightmarish forms to do his bidding. He has been known to use his own followers

Being effectively immortal, he has managed to amass a cult with great power and reach that nevertheless operates at the fringes of society, almost impossible to detect by hunter groups until it is too late. He has operatives in every country, and they could be anyone.

His personality can be described as eerily calm at all times. He has never been known to raise his voice, and speaks always in a very even tone. 

One of his most infamous characteristics is his numerous children. He has slept with many, many women throughout history and sired countless children. Many he has swayed to his side and have become his loyal followers; others have turned on him, and he has destroyed them without mercy. However, he claims to love all his children, and that even those who turn away from him will be reunited when he brings about a new world.

Notable Children

Goldie Darke: Sebastian Darke’s most loyal and faithful child, one who is almost slavishly dedicated and devoted to him. She was seemingly fatally wounded in battle by Joan of Arc, who cut deep into the right side of her jaw with her blade and left her for dead. Her father found her in time and was able to save her, before going forth and not only orchestrating Joan’s trial and eventual execution, but then taking over her friend Gilles de Rais, the leader of the French hunter’s group, and using him to commit numerous child murders to destroy any goodwill towards him and his organization. Goldie was given immortality, but she still wears the scar Joan gave her as mark of her failure. She is doted on by her father, who keeps her by him at almost all times and calls her “Little Sunshine.”

Baphomet: Born during a powerful magical ritual at the height of a syzygy, Baphomet was bred to be a powerful demonic idol who would incite worship and pull even more into Darke’s cult. Their mother had other plans, and was able to escape with her child back to Hell, where Baphomet grew up into a fairly stable and just being. They had an ill-fated romance with the succubus Aphrodite which produced a child, Orlando. They would later have a much better and stronger relationship with an angel, but that’s a story for another day (and another book trilogy).

Matchitehew: A child he had with an Algonquin woman. Matchitehew became a werewolf and butchered many colonizers, slaves, and soldiers in the early days of the United States. He was supposedly killed in battle shortly after massacring General Custer as he and his men rode towards what would have been their infamous “Last Stand.”

Dr. Vangel: Known for frequenting asylums in the 19th century, many patients would disappear under his watch as he would send them to be experimented on by the cult.

Cutter Brawn: A hulking man with a deformed face, which he often covers up with a mask of some kind. He has incredible strength and far greater intelligence than one would expect from someone that looks like he does, which he uses to his advantage. His preferred weapon is the chainsaw; someone who once had an encounter with him drunkenly recounted the story to Tobe Hooper, and from there The Texas Chain Saw Massacre was born.

Blackbeard: The famed pirate was in fact a child of Darke, though the man spread violence and chaos on his own terms.

Ezekiel Whateley: A dark wizard who posed as a farmer in the hamlet of Dunwich, Massachusetts. He collected many dark tomes and experimented on his own children with dark magic. It is said he was personally able to collect several pages of the True Necronomicon for his father over his lifetime.

Aleister Crowley: He was another child left to his own devices. He was not particularly well-regarded by others in the magic community, but managed to be a somewhat dangerous and charismatic figure.

Jim Jones: While at first on the same page, Jones decided to take his flock in a different direction. His father, unimpressed, manipulated him into the infamous mass suicide Jones became known for.

Notable Atrocities Committed: 

As mentioned above, he orchestrated the death of Joan of Arc and the fall from grace of Gilles de Rais. This is the only time on record that he has ever acted out of vengeance, which makes it all the more terrifying.

For reasons now lost to history, he influenced the fall of the Aztec empire.

While he was not directly responsible for the horrific events that occurred at the Scottish Wizard Academy in the late 2000s, he did loan the dark wizard who acted on his behalf one of his flesh golems: The Corpse Scorpion.

Helped influence many cults into mass suicides, such as Jonestown and Heaven’s Gate.

He managed to sway the Deep Ones into returning to the worship of the Old Gods and siding with his cult, though this is more on the cataclysmic failure of the Sons of Salem after their brutal purging of the town of Innsmouth. 

Kidnapped high-ranking Silverwing Roxanne Sumner when she was eight years old and subjected her to horrific psychological torture; after a few short weeks, she developed DID. While she is obviously very happy and well-adjusted now and she and her alters and generally liked and accepted (she’s the personal bodyguard of the head of the Silverwings), it’s pretty fucking evil to force a child to endure hellish black magic for weeks.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS: Can We Choose Our Actions?

Based on the verse cited above, it seems that God controls us. However, the Qur'an says that God has given us reason, intellect, and free will so that we can choose the way of good or evil. How can we reconcile these?

The Arabic word hidaya usually is translated as "guidance." However, it also has other meanings: rectitude, the straight way, the way to Islam, and the way of those upon whom God has bestowed His blessings. The Arabic word dalala usually is translated as "going astray." Among its other meanings are corruption, error, the way of those who persistently adhere to false beliefs and willfully break God's law, and those who refuse to listen to the truth and thus go astray out of their own heedlessness or negligence.

Being guided and being left astray relate to God and depend on His Will. He creates hidaya to manifest His Name al-Hadi (the One Who Guides) and dalala to manifest His Name al-Mudil (the One Who Leads Astray). He creates, or in other words, enables or "gives" being guided or being led astray. This does not mean that He leads someone on the right path or astray. Rather, being guided or being led astray result from our own intentions and actions, for such is a consequence of our attitudes and inclinations. It has nothing to do with an arbitrary predestination.

Guidance can be received by various actions: going to a mosque; listening to a sermon, a lecture, or the Qur'an; reflecting seriously on the Qur'an's verses and their meaning; spending time with pious people; receiving advice from sincere, spiritual guides and teachers of religion, and trying to benefit from their purity and lofty ethos; and reflecting on the true nature of life and death. Such practices lead to mental and spiritual enlightenment. If you start to do such things, no matter how apparently small or insignificant, God accepts it as a means to grant guidance. Therefore God guides, but the individual initiates the process. On the other hand, if you frequent such places as bars, nightclubs, or non-Islamic places of worship, in effect you are asking to be led astray. If God wills, He will let you go astray. If He does not, He will save you from such a destiny by any means He wishes.

Our share in determining whether we will be guided or go astray is infinitesimally small. If we follow misguidance, God creates the results from our own actions in accordance with the laws of cause and effect that He has decreed for His creation. It is a necessary condition of moral responsibility that we freely initiate actions that will lead us to misguidance if we choose to do so, despite all the warning and instruction we receive. Later on, God will punish or forgive us as He pleases.

Consider this example. When you listen to the Qur'an or a sermon, or read something about Islam, you experience certain feelings, a kind of inner uplifting and illumination. However, someone living next door to the mosque might consider the call to prayer, the sermons, and the prayers sources of irritation and complain that they are a public disturbance and nuisance. In either case, God uses our reactions and inclinations to create and enable the necessary results, wholly dependent on His Will, that may follow from that response.

Consider a different example. As we eat and drink, all kinds of nutrients, proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates, and so on are sent to where they are needed in our bodies. The mere wish or act of placing food in the mouth does not enable nourishment. First the faculties necessary to identify and move the food into the mouth, a complex coordination of brain and muscle activity, must be engaged and operative. No part of this process is controlled consciously or understood by the individual. Then, as the food enters the mouth, salivary glands begin to operate. Data about taste and flavor are passed to the brain, processed, and directed to the stomach, informing it of the precise combination of chemical substances necessary to digest that particular food and turn it into nourishment. And this is only the beginning!

As we have no conscious control over the process of nourishing our own body, we cannot say: "I put the food in my mouth, planned and arranged everything for the meal, digested it, distributed it to where it was needed, and fixed my body temperature for everything to function properly and efficiently. I did all this on my own!" If we did, would we not be ascribing to ourselves the actions of God? We should acknowledge reality: "When I put food in my mouth, wonderful processes begin to operate. An unseen, powerful hand puts these processes in motion for the necessary amount of time. The One who initiates and sustains all these processes is God."

By moving our will and inclination toward Divine Guidance, we may prove ourselves capable and worthy of it. For instance: I long to talk about religion with fullness and ease, to express my heartfelt feelings so well that others may be moved and benefit—but I fail to achieve what I wish, and can do only so much. I wish to convey Qur'anic law and God's commandments through persuasive, sincere words—but I get stuck at some point and become tongue-tied. I long to be totally immersed in the rapture of prayer and to be rid of all worldly concerns while praying—but I can hardly manage one prayer out of a thousand in this way. In sum, I contribute a sincere wish or a will, even though I may not realize my goal. The realization of this belongs to the All-Mighty.

The love and pleasure of faith, the earnest desire for Heaven, and an inclination to be content and submissive in the face of whatever comes from God are gifts that only He can place in our hearts and souls. We choose and incline, and God accepts and bestows His Blessings and Guidance. Saduddin Taftazani said: "Faith is a flame that God lights in a person's soul as a consequence of his or her use of free will." In order to obtain so great a favor, we must use our free will. You press a button and your life is illuminated. This seemingly small effort of will, this inclining toward faith, becomes the means to acquire Guidance and to be illuminated by Divine Light.

Some people may ask: If God lets go astray whomever He wills and guides aright whomever He wills (74:31), how does He call His servants to account?

We cannot attribute evil to God, for that comes from ourselves: Whatever good happens to you is from God; and whatever evil happens to you is from yourself (4:79). We have only ourselves to blame for what we suffer, for God does not wrong any one as much as an atom's weight (4:40). What happens to us is based upon our choices and actions, and accords with the law of cause and effect that God has decreed for His creation. Thus, those who persistently adhere to false beliefs and refuse to listen to and obey Divine commandments gradually lose the ability to perceive the truth, until a seal is set upon their hearts. Since God instituted these laws, sealing the heart and leading astray are attributed to Him. But in reality, such is the consequence of that person's free choice and inclination. Such a fate is neither predestined nor unjust.

Happiness in the Hereafter is the natural consequence of our effort to attain righteousness and inner illumination while alive: None does He cause to go astray save the iniquitous, who break their bond with God after it has been established, and cut asunder what God has joined, and spread corruption on Earth (2:26–27). God does not cause anyone to go astray, except those who He knows will refuse to seek faith. Here the causing to go astray denotes God's leaving the individual alone and removing His blessings. God may forsake one who He knows will choose to deny the truth and persevere in denial. Deserving His favor and blessings or deserving their withdrawal depend upon our free choice, and nothing else.
