Virtual Photography Guide: Composition (Part 2)

Let's continue exploring composition with a few more guidelines used in real-life photography, together with some FFXIV examples!

Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds involves dividing the viewport into a 3x3 grid by drawing two horizontal lines and two vertical lines, resulting in nine equally sized rectangles. According to the rule, placing key elements of interest along these gridlines or at their intersections create harmonious compositions and draws the viewer's eye in a visually pleasing and balanced way:

Rule of Odds

The Rule of Odds suggests that using an odd number of elements, such as three or five, tends to be more visually interesting and engaging compared to an even number. The Rule of Odds can be used to create a sense of asymmetry, tension, and visual flow:

Rule of Space

The Rule of Space emphasizes leaving empty space or room within the frame, specifically in the direction that the subject or elements are moving or looking towards. It adds a sense of direction or movement and allows the viewer to engage with the image more effectively:

Golden Ratio

The Golden Ratio, also known as the Divine Proportion or Phi (Φ), is a mathematical concept and compositional guideline used in various art forms. It is a ratio of approximately 1.618:1 and is considered aesthetically pleasing to the human eye. In photography, dividing the frame into sections based on the Golden Ratio and positioning important subjects or focal points along these divisions creates a visually appealing and balanced composition. That way, compositions that feel harmonious and naturally pleasing:

So there you have it! while not comprehensive, these guidelines may help create shots that are engaging and pleasing to the eye.

I FINALLY made a Tumblr page. So lazy! I've had it planned for a while but only just got around to it... on Valentine's day no less ^^

By the sheer amount of images contained in this post (If you already had a look!) you might deduce that... I like photography. Or at least virtual photography. Especially gposing! A lot! And I've many shots that prove that very fact! Whether they're good or bad, I leave that for your personal judgement, but I do hope you enjoy! I like them though... most of them at least :p

Of course, 'GPose' does stand for Group Pose... there's no lack of that here!

Who could forget the amazing work of studio builders! Some of the works the FFXIV community creates is astounding... (Sadly I don't remember the name of the first two studios, or where they were, it was a long time ago! The others were taken at Studio Aquitaine!)

I also cannot forget about landscapes and flora, there's some incredible sights around Eorzea!

And many, MANY more I cannot fit into a single post!

Since I'm currently busy with ReShade, I will most likely be reposting stuff from Twitter and test shots using my own presets to get used to Tumblr

"I am NOT a Merry Man!"

I had to work Christmas this year-- the Day Job has a rotating schedule and some years fortune smiles and some years it doesn't and this was actually the first Christmas I had worked in a few years. But being Christmas, the phones weren't ringing that much (a good thing for the Day Job-- weirdly one of those jobs where if I'm having an exciting, busy day somebody else is having a bad day) so we kicked up our feet and ended up having a Ridley Scott triple feature: Gladiator II (pretty solid and not that bad, IMO), Kingdom of Heaven (excellent as always) and after a brief dalliance with The Martian, we decided to stay on theme and threw up Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe.

Now, I did not know this movie existed and I was only tangentially aware of the Taron Edgerton/Jamie Foxx Robin Hood that followed a few years later. Having watched it, I can now safely say two things: one, this wasn't the film that Ridley Scott should have made, and two, it didn't dethrone any of the current Robin Hood Triumverate.

I think that's the key when approaching Robin Hood. Not only do you have to make a good movie that's going to make the studio some money, but you have to make an adaptation of the source material that's going to dethrone one of the current Robin Hood Triumverate. We've got three amazing Robin Hood adaptations on the board: Disney's animated version, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, and Robin Hood Men In Tights. If you're going to make me watch a Robin Hood adaptation, those are the three I'm grading it against and by golly, you best be bringing your A-game, because it's going to take a lot to shove one of them aside.

This one doesn't get the job done- but that doesn't mean it's necessarily a bad movie. What makes it frustrating is that there is the outline of a really interesting movie just sitting there that Ridley Scott would have made a beautiful historical epic out of. (True story: I had just finished The Plantagenets, so having been immersed in this period, I was annoyed watching this movie.) Ridley Scott is really good at making historical epics that have just enough history and names right that they come across as very plausible.

And that's what is frustrating. Go pick up even a basic history of the Plantagenets. There is family drama for days. Go watch The Lion In Winter-- it's not that far off the mark. Eleanor of Aquitaine is one of history's most formidable women and is begging, begging to have a movie made about her. It was messy. Go from the Shipwreck, through Stephen and Matilda and the weird civil war and the rise of Henry II and it's just perfect. It's got Oscar bait written all over it.

This self-important, 'let's make a historically accurate Robin Hood movie' thing does not.

That's not to say that Ridley Scott isn't very good at what he does. Richard II did die at Chalus Castle, as the movie shows. Not immediately, of course-- his mother made it to his bedside. And King John did piss off his barons-- eventually. Not right away, of course, and we do get the Magna Carta out of it. So in the broad outlines, Scott isn't wrong, just... early. And mashing a bunch of historical events on the same timeline into the period of a movie.

Was there a Robin Longstride in the army being badass with his buddies Will Scarlett, Little John, and Allan-A-Dale? Who knows. Does Robin get in trouble for telling the truth when the King asks how everyone's doing and he pretty much says, 'Boss we're tired, real tired, and wanna go home.' So when the King dies, they make a break for it but find Robert of Loxley, a loyal knight who, with his dying breath makes Robin promise to carry the crown back home to tell them that Richard II is dead. Robin does so and then continues the charade all the way back to Nottingham where he meets Maid Marian (Cate Blanchett) and Robert's father Walter (Max von Sydow).

Turns out, people are heavily taxed and it sucks. Friar Tuck brews his own ale on the side and it's good. There is a gang of orphans who dress like Cillian Murphy in Batman Begins and run around the woods. The French are about to invade and the barons are pissed off at King John, it turns out Robin's father was a stonemason/philosopher who dreamed of a Charter of Rights, so the people could be governed by laws and not just the whims of a King.

Y'all know where this is going, right? There's a big battle on the beach. Robin saves Marian. He has a bad-ass shot of him pulling back his bowstring ready to shoot someone and does. Everyone goes home happy- save for Robin, who has pissed off King John with his demand for a charter of rights so he declares him an outlaw. But it's cool because he and Marian are going to live in the forest and take care of the creepy little gang of Batman-villain orphans.

Can I tell y'all something? I didn't realize that Matthew Macfadyen was in this movie until I read the Wiki page. And while Eileen Atkins made a solid Eleanor of Aquitaine, they were apparently looking at Vanessa Redgrave, who withdrew following the death of her daughter Natasha Richardson- so think of what could have been! (And that's gotta be a tough role to step into given the fact that the last major portrayal I can think of is Glenn Close in the remake of The Lion In Winter or before that Catherine Hepburn) The cast is stacked. It's legit and it's good. As a historical period piece, this movie is not uninteresting-- but as a Robin Hood adaptation, it just falls flat. No one is having all that much fun. Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett are great actors, but their chemistry with each other is honestly wooden.

Overall: Turns out you can make a historical epic. Or you can make an adaptation of Robin Hood. But you can't really do both- as nary a mustache is twirled and no one is particularly merry. If there is to be a Robin Hood, he needs to have his merry men. Ridley Scott should have made a different movie- the Plantagenets and this time period is fertile territory for high drama, swords, and blood. This movie also serves as a warning for those contemplating bringing Robin Hood to the screen- yet again. You can be as historically accurate as you want to be, but you've got to remember to have a little fun with it. This is joyless, overly serious, and generally not worth it. My Grade: ** out of ****

I have been devoted to Katharine Hepburn for decades. I cannot remember what the first film was I saw her in, but I'd be willing to bet it was The Philadelphia Story. She was amazing, set her own rules, and was an absolute icon. Her nostrils flaring could bring legions to their knees. When she was young, she cropped her hair and went by Jimmy, partly to honour her brother who committed suicide at age 15. She married a friend quite probably because it was the done thing, and he supported her in getting her career off the ground. She got him to change his name from Ludlow Ogden Smith to S. Ogden Ludlow, so she wouldn't be Kate Smith. Absolute Queen behaviour. Her relationship with Spencer Tracy is well documented, but she also had a very close relationship with Constance Collier (who was a hottie in her own right, and lusted after Marlene Dietrich in the 30s). She is so hot from standard 30s studio glamour to her butch presence in Sylvia Scarlett, right through to her performance as Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1969, where I need to stop because of cut off dates. She was the most talented actress and had to die for cheekbones. She is iconic and outrageously hot.

The woman who singlehandedly made me realize I was bi. A real "do i want to look like her. be her. or be with her.' crisis, where the answer was all three. Holy shit please all three.

Diahann Carroll (Paris Blues, Carmen Jones, Porgy and Bess)— Face of an angel. She had the range. She brought chemistry with every romance she portrayed. She also had a great fashion sense, and was so pretty Mattel made a doll based off of her.

The single word I would use to explain Katherine Hepburn's appeal is *range*. In her acting career, that meant covering all the ground between lush period dramas and the comedies she did with Carey Grant and Spencer Tracey. In terms of hotness, it meant an uncanny ability to bring anything from a Dietrich-esque androgyny to some of the best Classic Hollywood Glamour you will ever see.

Katharine hep was so cool. The VIBES, the INDEPENDENCE,,, living life on her own terms.

She’s not only stunningly gorgeous (those eyes that pierce your soul! a jawline you could cut glass with!) but her delivery and physical presence in roles gives off confidence and authority in such a sexy way (truly the biggest dick energy of Old Hollywood). She's literally one of the funniest women to ever live! She goes shot for shot with Cary Grant in Philadelphia Story and we damn well love her for it! She's the most annoying creature to ever live in Bringing Up Baby but she's so insane and funny that we simply cannot help but fall in love with her (and root for her to give Grant an aneurysm!)

She simply stuns onscreen; you cannot do anything but be captivated by her presence. Also a non-gender-conforming icon and mild tumblr celebrity by virtue of that one picture from The Warrior's Husband (stage play).

Katharine Hepburn was out here casually changing the lives of young butch lesbians with her gender swag! She wore pants even when people said she shouldn’t, she refused to marry or have kids, and she wore menswear in at LEAST one movie!

If I start thinking about her face for too long I will cry she is so so hot. Katherine is so charismatic and charming in everything she appears in - watch her adopt a leopard and fall in love with her. Also she has the biggest dick energy ever (she and her pal Lauren Bacall share that accolade). Also had an incredibly long and varied career from screw ball comedies to serious dramas - she’s a queen of the screen and I adore her.

Someone's got to mention it, but she's won the most Oscars out of any performer and is largely considered one of the greatest actresses ever. She's got an incredible voice, an incredible presence, and she absolutely steals every scene she's in. She was private person and deemed standoffish and unapproachable, but she was also profoundly concerned for people's rights and was an outspoken supporter of abortion access. Finally, the Katharine Hepburn slacks look is just iconic. I mean look at her.

This woman. I have been obsessed with her for years. I know the urban legend is a popular one at this point of her walking around set in her underwear when her pants were stolen and she was left with only a skirt, but the pants thing is honestly enough for her to be the hottest in the room in my book. She refused to wear anything else at a time when the public in general and especially the studios did not like that. She was independent, stubborn, and so so very capable. Competency kink anyone? Also, if you want one final way that Katharine's entire life was saying "fuck you" to the establishment, it started young! Her mother took her to suffrage events, and she never got rid of that attitude of justice. I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of all the ways she was such a badass that I'm turning into a rambling mess instead.

Ca y est, j'ai fini l'animation de mon film! Pour fêter ça en voici un teaser : ) C'est un moyen métrage de 35 minutes sur lequel je viens de passer l'année complète. Il va maintenant passer entre les mains de Flavien et de son tout nouveau studio Boom, j'ai hâte. Il sera terminé dans le courant de l'été si tout va bien. Merci au Département de la Charente et à la Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine dont l'aide à l'écriture m'a permi de tenir l'année, merci aussi à Novanima qui a rejoind l'aventure en cours de route et qui va ensuite se charger de diffuser et faire vivre le film. Et pour terminer évidemment un grand merci à tous ceux qui m'ont aidé pour ce projet, directement ou indirectement, il me tarde de vous le présenter : )
