I had a stressful thing happen a couple of months ago and I decided to ‘do something for me’ right.

I set up a Nano tank with an Aquaone dynamic 58 I got from my LFS. It’s not super weird but I had never seen a tall tank like this and was super hyped to try building upwards instead of the usual wide tanks.

I’ve stocked it with 2 bamboo shrimps, 1 vampire shrimp, 2 Pygmy corys, various neocardina shrimp, 3 Thai micro crabs, two killifish, various snails, 3 amano shrimp.

The killifish have been a dream fish for me since I was a teenager, but because I always had either larger community tanks or dedicated betta tanks I was never able to get them. I’m sooooo glad that they get to be the top of the food chain in here and live out their lives as tyrants.I’m hoping to trade a guy for some of his neocardinas too.

I really recommend keeping a little tank if you have the space. It doesn’t have to cost much and if you’re smart about it it can ever be free 👌

Future plans!

I have decided to keep and breed guppies finally, as they are honestly my favourite fish of all time! (Probably because they remind me of mermaids!) I have set up the Aquacube again next to my 90l AquaOne tank, so that I can keep the babies in there, while selecting certain male and female guppies to breed away from the males in the main tank. I initially bought 12 or so standard male and female guppies in mixed colours, but after a lot of research have decided to breed blue glass guppies. They are out of stock atm so I will need to wait a few weeks before I can get them, but that gives me time to improve the plants and hard scape.

I bought some large seriyu rocks for that, I had to silcone other smaller rocks to the bottom so they would stand up on their own.

Here's a blurry photo of my setup! I have since moved the rock in the Aquacube in with the others in the main tank. I've taken out some of the plants on the left, trimmed the roots and re planted them. I might do the same for the back as I'm not sure they will grow tall enough to be background plants, so I might have a move around. The plants seem to benefit from a root trim every few years, last time I did this they grew incredibly fast afterwards. I just need to decide on what plants to get for the back of the tank that will grow talk enough!

Once the tanks are fully planted, I plan on getting some blue shrimp. They look amazing!

What's your general consensus on divided betta tanks?

Ehh, it depends on what you use to divide it, how you decorate the tank, and the individual fish.

For instance, a flimsy DIY divider that’s white or see through in a tank with no hides is definitely going to stress out bettas. However, a dark divider with lots of hides where the fish don’t have to be in the line of sight all the time is more acceptable.

I use the AquaOne Betta Trio for my three Betta smaragdina girls and like it. I never have to worry about the dividers falling (because it’s build in) and there’s no gap for them to jump over. It’s also dark with only slits in the top and bottom, giving the bettas the chance to stay out of sight. It’s hard to see in the pic, but each section has wood in it for the bettas to hide in and around, as well as lots of plants.

I’d consider using it for splendens in the future, for sure.

Of course, one also has to take account the pheromones in the water. There are other signals aside from sight that lets bettas know when others are nearby. These other signals can cause stress, too. So you have to know your fish and be ready to move them if they really don’t respond well to sharing a divided tank.

As a whole, I don’t recommend ANY divided tank, DIY or otherwise, for beginners because there’s so much room for error. Not only because of flimsy dividers but people not cycling their tanks beforehand and deciding to just get three bettas right away and dumping them in. Divided tanks should always be stocked slowly, just like any other tank. For the tank above, I added a fish in every two weeks and carefully monitored the water parameters.
