Erstaunlich.

AquaDom Elevator
Many aquariums have elevators to take guests from floor to floor. But few aquariums are quite like the AquaDom in Berlin. The AquaDom is essentially a giant fish tank. It’s 12 meters across and 25 meters high. It holds around 1 million liters of water and nearly 2,600 fish. At the center of the AquaDom is a glass elevator. When you ride the elevator, you get an up-close and personal look at the fish that call the aquarium home.

Prosecutors close investigation of Berlin aquarium collapse as the cause remains unclear
Associated Press report:
Prosecutors in Berlin said Tuesday they have closed their investigation into the spectacular collapse of a huge aquarium last December after an expert report failed to pin down a reason why the tank burst.
The AquaDom aquarium, which stood in a hotel lobby in the center of the German capital, burst in the early hours of Dec. 16, sending 1 million liters (264,000 gallons) of water gushing into the building and the street outside. Two people were slightly injured.
Hell yeah I got away with it. I mean, dang, too bad we'll never know what really happened.

so until this morning there was apparently an eight story tropical fish tank in a hotel atrium in berlin
what seems to have happened is that the acrylic tank may have been damaged by 17° farenheit cold temperatures, but in any case around 6am it just, gave out and released all 1 million liters of water and 1500 tropical fish into the lobby
as we know water will follow the path of least resistance, and in this case that seems to have been through a lindt chocolate shop and then out onto the street
two people were lightly injured but no one was killed except, unfortunately, all the fish, who at leaat had an exciting time of it and hopefully got some of the chocolate as they passed through and destroyed the place on their way out

Imagine being one of the few dozen fish (out of 1.500) who are reported to have survived this shit
This blows any apocalypse ever imagined by humans out of the water, pardon the pun

AquaDom aquarium at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin explodes
AquaDom aquarium at the Radisson Collection Hotel, Berlin explodes
A large aquarium in Berlin, housed in the lobby of the city’s Radisson Collection Hotel, has burst, flooding the hotel and nearby streets with millions of litres of water. More than 100 firefighters had been in attendance at the scene of the world’s largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium and it is not yet clear what had caused the break. The AquaDom, as it is known, was a 25-metre tall…

A giant aquarium bursting in a hotel lobby, transporting huge amounts of water onto the streets, damaging the whole building and killing more that 1500 fish is awful.
But it's also kind of fitting for how this year went. Also, everyone agrees, it's so Berlin. Couldn't happen anywhere else in Germany.
R.I.P. to Nemo and his friends.

Huge Berlin Aquarium Bursts, Unleashing Flood of Devastation
Huge Berlin Aquarium Bursts, Unleashing Flood of Devastation
A huge aquarium in Berlin burst, spilling debris, water and more than a thousand tropical fish out of the AquaDom tourist attraction in the heart of the German capital early Friday. Police said parts of the building, which also contains a hotel, cafes and a chocolate store, were damaged as 1 million liters (264,000 gallons) of water poured from the aquarium shortly before 6 a.m. (0500 GMT).…

The physics behind the collapse of a huge aquarium
Jenny List
At the end of last week Aquadom, the world’s largest cylindrical aquarium, unexpectedly shattered and caused an emergency as it flooded both the Berlin hotel that housed it and the surrounding streets. From an engineering perspective it’s a fascinating story, because its construction was such that this shouldn’t have happened. We have an analysis of what might have gone wrong from [Luis Batalha] (Nitter), and from it we can learn a little about the properties of the plastic used.
The aquarium was made of an acrylic polymer which has an interesting property — at a certain temperature it transitions between a glass-like state and a rubber-like one. Even at room temperature the acrylic is well below the transition temperature, but as the temperature drops the acrylic becomes exponentially more brittle. When the outside temperature dropped to well below zero the temperature also dropped in the foyer, and the high water pressure became enough to shatter the acrylic.
Sadly few of the fish from the aquarium survived, but fortunately nobody was killed in the incident.
