OC Pride Challenge Day Thirteen - Tropes of a Nonbinary OC
Rua┃ Rowan Evergreen┃ Matilda Prentiss (they/them)
Fourteen years before the Curse was cast, a young girl called Rua is abandoned by her birth parents to die in the woods, only saved by following a path of rowan trees towards Rumplestiltskin's Castle - a feat that should be impossible considering the hundreds of miles between this place and her home village...and the fact that there areno rowan trees near his castle. But whatever magic was used is untraceable and the Dark One knows he won't get any answers from a half-starved four-year-old even once she recovers - and, much as he would never admit it, there are ancient magics even he doesn't know all the details of. And after he deals with her parents he fully intends to go and give her to someone else...
But once upon a time he was a father, and he's just spent the last few weeks trying to make sure she lives to the next day, and for whatever reason she's grown attached to him - meaning that leaving her would shatter any remaining trust she has in people and deep, deep down...he doesn't have the heart to do that. So he takes her in - and unknowingly starts to change things.
Fourteen years later Rua is Rowan Evergreen, a young person who has strong magical potential and considers Rumplestiltskin a father...except they daren't say that out loud because they know full well that they're really nothing more than an apprentice to him - he's manipulating events to find his actual child, after all, and Rowan knows they can't compare to Baelfire, so they're not even going to try. They don't even share the same magic - Rumple forbid them from learning Dark Magic, and though Rowan can guess at the reasons why that doesn't mean the way he did so didn't hurt. With Rumple imprisioned and with their last words to each other harsh and bitter, they don't expect to get any answers of any kind until Emma Swan breaks the Curse three decades later.
So it's a shock when they suddenly wake up after Emma introduces herself in Storybrooke - because there's only one person who had the power to ensure that would happen, and they have absolutely no idea why...or what they're supposed to do now. Especially because, due to Rumple making an active effort back in their world to keep them hidden from his enemies, Regina has spent twenty-eight years wondering who the hell this new person even is.
Turns out this really is just the start of things - and secrets even Rowan didn't know of will eventually come to light...

Greetings
I finished editing my wonderland thing and it is genuinely the longest thing I have ever written
I am watching the lovely Emily Prentiss because she's incredible, amazing and genuinely just because she's Emily Prentiss
I fucking adore her.
Anyway, I do have a question for you on this fine day.
Okay, I asked another friend this the other day but I'd like to know your answer too
You can spend time in one learning place. For instance it could be Camp Half-blood, or Hogwarts, or the Little Palace or anywhere else.
Additionally, you would have the requirements to survive in any of these places. Eg hogwarts = be magic. Chb = Be a demigod etc
I'd also like any additional information you could give (I'm sorry I keep using the exact same examples). A hogwarts house, chb cabin etc
An eye for a godforsaken eye: I am still on my grishaverse kick so I must say the Little Palace and, while I'm aware you haven't a clue what I am going on about it's only fair I say a preference for Griaha type too. I'm not afraid of the dark, shadow summoner seems pretty cool. If I had to be normal though, probably a tidemaker because I feel like we've seen so little of their powers in the books and I refuse to believe their just weak
Anyway, that's my little rant for the day
Have a wondrous day
Morning
my tumblr is working again (obviously) so that’s great
my head was immediately empty. Nothing up there. I’m not going to say Hogwarts because that feels a bit lazy, and I’m not going to say CHB because I think I would be killed like twelve hours in (I’m including camp Jupiter in that)
maybe hotel Valhalla but that’s not really a place of learning
I’m gonna go with Halts Cabin from rangers apprentice because I fit the build and basic skill set of a ranger. I also like puzzles so. The only thing is that I’m still not old enough to even be chosen for it
I’m very much intrigued by that and it’s moved the series up on my tbr
Goodnight :)

I'm so tired. TMA Owl House au.
Okay. Instead of covers there's gods, so everyone's more like warlocks. Head of the Isles, Jonah Magnus, unified all witches centuries ago by placing a system so that everyone can only make a deal with one god, having a ceremony on their 16th birthday and training for all their childhood to be suitable for said god.
Since then the Isles have been ruled by a Head, all of whom are to make pacts with the Eye. Eyepocolapse rules as well, so all the warlocks are under the authority of the Eye. Every other God also has a representative acolyte, like a coven head.
Jon the human getting transported to the demon realm as a child, chasing a weird spider. So he's almost like Anne from Amphibia, he's just hiding out in the woods for a few years until local magicless witch finds him.
Said magicless witch is Georgie, cursed as a child to be barred away from ever making a pact by her inability to feel fear. Her and the Admiral, her weirdly powerful cat, take Jon in and they all immediately become friends.
The Institute is where most warlocks train to take in their god. And within the institute is the Archives, a program supervised by Elias (current Head of the Isles) himself, where Avatar Representatives take on an apprentice.
There's Tim who learns under Nikola Orsinov. His brother used to be her apprentice as well, but died soon after making his pact with the Stranger. Tim plans to make his pact with the same god, seeing if he can bargain for his brother back and maybe learn to harness Stranger magic (one of the most difficult pacts). And maybe kill Nikola, who is rumored to be the one to take Danny's life.
There's Sasha under Micheal Distortion, who has had a knack for the Spiral since she was a baby. But she hates it, the attention from teachers and from her god hates the illogicalness she causes and the need to tear her friends (even if Micheal says they are all to be fake) from the in side out with lies. She's here to tear the Spiral apart from the seams, mapping it out and finding patterns.
And then Martin of the Lonely under Peter Lukas. He was taken in as a boy to be part of the Lonely, and has gotten quite good at banishing people to his domain, summoning and disappearing into the fog, and finding lonely people to leech on, even without a pact yet. The latter ability is the reason he's friends with Tim and Sasha, the only two apprentices in the whole place that don't want anything to do with their god.
Let's get into the Avatar Representatives!
Enrique MacMillan of the Buried, obsessed with finding the supposed "hidden treasure" on the Isles. He takes no apprentices.
John Amherst of the Corruption, able to make a person fatally ill with a touch (though they don't die unless he says so) or with any object he inscribes his magic into. His apprentice is Jane Prentiss, who let's bugs live under her skin and seems... borderline enamored with her god.
Maxwell Rayner of the Dark and his assistant/field agent/dragon Manuela Domiguez. The Dark has the youngest apprentice, Callum Brodie, of the whole Archive, a prodigy with the ability to spin tales of monsters and make them true, as long as a person is thinking of them in the dark. Rayner is pretty aloof, so Manuela usually attends to meetings and Callum's studies.
Agnes Montague of the Desolation, one of the newest Avatars, yet to take an apprentice. Not much is seen of her, but other people with the same god tend to not like her much, calling her a spoiled brat or a child protégé. Rumor is she burnt her mentor to a crisp while she was an apprentice, earning her the Representative position.
Oliver Banks of the End, taking over after Nathaniel Thorp went missing. He is generally outlasted by the other Representatives, not exactly well liked for his tendency to give prophesies about their deaths at the staff parties.
Jared Hopworth of the Flesh, earning the Representative position after Angela had been fully consumed by her god. He's rather experimental in his practices, and will try magic out on himself.
Trevor Herbert of the Hunt, never really seen at the Archive. Or at announcements or really by the Head at all, actually. Elias probably prefers that, as Trevor does not act like he's of as much importance as he is. Him and his apprentice, Julia Montauk, are usually on excursions to kill monsters or discovering new Hunt magic practices.
Peter Lukas of the Lonely, coming from a long line of Lonely Reps. He never planned to take an apprentice, but Elias forced him to make use of Martin, the boy he took in years ago, and mold him into a Rep so he doesn't become too powerful without someone to control him.
Newest Rep, Melanie King of the Slaughter, gaining her position after Alfred Grifter had quit. Certainly angry enough to be a Slaughter Avatar, she is reluctant to take the job after she said the Slaughter "betrayed her" by mutilating her leg and leaving her blind. But Elias let's her keep the magic and gives her the position, mostly if not to keep an eye on her.
Micheal Distortion of the Spiral, formerly Micheal Shelley before a higher up tasked him with studying the god. His apprentice, Sasha James, enacts as his assistant, telling her to make friends to lie to and to study her innate Spiral magic.
Nikola Orsinov of the Stranger, not much is known about her, funny enough. Her apprentice is Tim Stoker, motivated by his brother and his brother's death to be part of this god.
Simon Fairchild of the Vast has taken many apprentices over the years, claiming them to be part of his family. His most recent apprentice is Mike Crew.
The Web of course has a Rep, even an apprentice of Annabelle Cane, but no one knows who they are. The only thing Annabelle ever publicly refers to him as is Mr. Spider. Even Elias doesn't elaborate on the mystery to the public.
And of course Getrude Robinson of the Eye, having not taken an apprentice since her last one, Gerard Keay, was taken by Elias to be his personal guard. But after Jon the human is caught sneaking into the Archive in his own burning curiosity, Elias forces her to take him as her apprentice, much to her dismay.
But a human? Oh ho HO. Those guys are terrified of everything, and soon all the gods want the human to be theirs, even if he's under Elias's and Gertrude's direct protection.
And even when Georgie offers him to stay with her, a safe haven where Elias won't find him, Jon refuses. There's just... so many new things to discover. He wants to figure out who Elias is, why Gerard works with him, who the Web rep is, what Gertrude's deal is... he can't just leave when there's so much to uncover.
Plus, Tim and Sasha are right. The best way to take down the operation is from the inside. He keeps in contact with Georgie, consigning to study in the Archive, where everyone is trying to kidnap/convince/possess/kill onto their side, to help them take it down.

I can’t tell you all how excited and nervous I was that I received @arcanaprentiss / @wanlingnic for my recipient for @fieldsofvesuvia I haven’t drawn Julian yet, and well to then do this form of him was a challenge but I had a lot of fun with this piece. And to be able to draw Prentiss with him? I COULD NOT PASS THIS UP. <3

Top 5 favorite fan apprentices!
YES OKAY IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS QUESTION
(Also, calling it a top 5 is kinda unfair since it’s more like I have a top 50 -- see: all the blogs I follow and love, bc all fan apprentices are valid, but here’s a few off the top of my head:)
To begin with, @bastart13 ‘s Isha who I adore. I like to think that Cass and Isha have tea together, sometimes. Bast’s blog is full of such cool stuff, too, and they’re a big inspiration for me
Next is @aaliyah-draws Valarie who’s a sweetheart and a good friend. She’s the actual best -- she showed up to Cass’ birthday with cake! (and Cassius def bakes her some thank-you cookies sometime)
@lazyvoyager ‘s Illain, who’s an utter dork and such fun to see art of. I haven’t interacted much with them but their blog is absolutely worth following <3
@slushrottweiler-blog ‘s Xan, who is Cassius’ fellow mute friend. They like movie nights together and inventing sign names for everyone else. Also, Xan’s just, in general, such a cutie. I love her xD
Last but not least, @arcanaprentiss ‘ Prentiss. I adore the whole reverse-end concept of their au, too, and Prentiss is absolutely darling and her interactions with Julian always make me smile ; u ;

“May you live in Interesting Times”
@palmtv left several questions in my inbox about whether or not Prentiss and Julian had children, and it did made me think.
The short answer is yes! They had a son.
The long answer is “Lieutenant Jacob “Jack” Prentiss, officer of the Vesuvian Royal Navy, finds out at age 19 that he might not be as normal as he thought he was.” ;w;
(please enjoy this with a hot side serving of DILF Asra.)

Postmodernism [The Arcana AU]
episode subtitle:
☁Early Impressionism
feat. Canis of @canistheapprentice, Ceci/Cecilia of @arcane-anonymaye, and Miss Prentiss of @arcanaprentiss Postmodernism is my series of Modern AU Arcana vignettes - it’s a nonlinear, slice-of-life collection as opposed to an arching storyline.
Julian’s making friends with the new hospital staff, and his boyfriend’s taking notice.
Pairing: Julian/Canis (Julian/M!MC) Words: 2060
The faded, green plastic sign set into the wall read ID badge required beyond this point. Canis, though badgeless, continued on.
He’d caught it at a good time, but even if he hadn’t, he’d gotten used to the madness of the ER, and learned to sidestep it with ease. Hugging the wall so gurneys could whiz past freely, he held the cardboard drink carrier to his chest, following the odd purple stripe on the wall to where the hallway opened up, into a wide, busy, high-ceilinged room lined with curtained beds, an oasis of cheap laminate countertop plopped in the middle and bustling with nurses in blue scrubs and sensible shoes. Taking refuge on a bare patch of counter, he spotted a familiar messy black bun bent over a computer monitor and flagged it down. “Hey! Ceci!”
She glanced up, tapped a few more keys, and came over, lighting up and reaching over the counter to give him a half-hug. “Hey, sweetie!” Fixing the cheerful buttons lining the neck of her scrub top, she raised an eyebrow at his collection of drinks: one darling pink, smothered in whipped cream and dusted with espresso powder; one in an olive green paper cup with a heat sleeve and XTRA scrawled on the side in black marker, and one dark brown with swirls of dark chocolate and three kinds of chocolate shavings on top. “Your boyfriend stands you up for lunch, and you bring him coffee?”
Canis rolled his eyes, taking a sip of his baby-pink frap without freeing it from the carrier. “He didn’t stand me up; he called me to cancel, sobbing and begging my forgiveness, because he has to work overnight again.” He shrugged. “I decided that’s stupid, and I want to see him anyway, so I brought him coffee.” Working the chocolatey drink out of the cardboard, he passed it very ceremoniously over the counter. “And I got one for you, because you’re overworked and underappreciated…and I’m really hoping you won’t tell me he’s in surgery,” he finished, batting his lashes.
Ceci laughed, accepting her bribe graciously. “Thank you. And he got out of surgery an hour ago. I sent him to take a nap in the attendings’ lounge, so he’s probably not doing that, but you can still check.” Leaning on the desk behind the countertop, she shuffled her drink to the other hand and dug in the sparkly silver fanny pack strapped to her hip. “Here—he gave me his backup ID, because he loses the real one every other week—” She handed him a plastic card with a fuzzy photo of Julian and a mag strip on a purple Halloween lanyard. “You’ll need it to get in.”
“Thanks!” Beaming, Canis stuffed it into the waistband of his leggings, picking up the drink carrier again. “Will I see you at the club after work?”
“Honestly? Hopefully not.” Slumping forward on the counter, Ceci took a long drink. “I’ve been working back-to-back doubles since last week, and I finally have two days off…I want to spend them doing laundry and eating cheese fries, not hungover. I just have to have the willpower to say no when everyone else wants to go out tonight.”
Canis nodded, solemnly toasting her with his drinks. “I’ll light a candle for you on my altar.”
“I appreciate it.” Dropping back into a bedraggled desk chair, she rolled back to her computer. “And while you’re at it, could you remind your boss he promised me a pajamas-and-movie night over a month ago, and he’s never delivered?”
“You got it.” Texting Lucio just that, Canis wound through the halls to a quieter wing of the hospital, following the arrow on a chipped hanging sign to the ATTENDI G LOUNGE. Through the blinded windows that lined the hallway, it looked empty, but he rounded the corner anyway, sliding the ID card out of his solar-system leggings.
As it turned out, he needn’t have bothered; as he came around the corner, he heard a familiar, percussive bark of a laugh, and an unfamiliar giggle ending in a snort. He peeked around a tall, wheeled wire shelving unit packed with gauze and glass tubes.
Julian had one ratty black-and-white sneaker parked between the lounge door and its frame, the red light on the keypad flashing angrily in response. His usual wide, sweeping gestures easily cleared the head of the woman he was talking to, short and petite in the kind of grey skirt suit Canis truly believed had gone extinct in the eighties. She had dark hair braided back into an extremely neat bun, and enormous, round, wire-rimmed glasses, and her pale cheeks steadily reddened as Julian felt the material of the fringed mauve-and-yellow shawl draped around her shoulders. Canis didn’t like to eavesdrop, but he also didn’t go out of his way to stop it.
“—hope it’s keeping you warm, down there,” Julian was saying, regarding the embroidery with suspicion. “Form is all well and good, but never at the expense of function.”
Her voice didn’t carry nearly as well as his, but it wasn’t without substance, firm and crisp as it was posh and polished. “Au contraire, Doctor. Hypothermia is a small price to pay for haute couture.”
“Well, at least you’re in a hospital.” Letting go of her shawl, Julian grinned. “When you’re frozen to death in the depth below, there’s a chance of a handsome, dashing trauma surgeon finding you and nursing you back to health.”
Canis took a sip of his drink.
She blinked, then smiled, smoothing her shawl back into place and hiding her red cheeks in her collar. “Well, then…all the more reason?” Clearing her throat, she nodded toward the lounge. “But I shall be courteous enough to wait ‘til you’ve had a nap.” She cocked an eyebrow pointedly. “You know Ceci will come down on you with righteous fury if she finds out you’ve been putting it off.”
“Oh?” His grin widened, eyebrows waggling teasingly. “And what will she do to you, for distracting me?”
Laughing, she pulled away, turning toward the other end of the hallway. “Good night, Dr Devorak.”
He ducked and waved her off in a foppish bow, dipping his chest low. “Good night, Miss Prentiss.”
Canis waited an extra second and a half before walking up, just to be sure that his boyfriend was, in fact, watching her walk away. “You are supposed to be napping.”
Julian jumped about a foot, accidentally, freeing himself from the door so it click-beeped shut behind him. “Canis! What a lovely s—wait.” Half-leaned in for a kiss, he narrowed his eyes. “Ceci sent you. You’re a spy. Is that even real coffee?”
“Maybe not. Or maybe it is.” Popping the lukewarm cup out of the carrier, Canis held it up tantalizingly. “Are you a gambling man, Doctor?”
With a smile, Julian leaned down to kiss him hello, then shifted promptly back to his assessment of the coffee cup. “…That’s from Selasi’s.”
“Mm-hm.” Ditching the drink container, Canis sucked whipped cream off the top of his own drink. “Thea was working. I told her it was for you.”
Julian hesitated. “So it’s fresh.”
Canis shrugged. “Or it’s a trick.”
“Mm.” After a moment, he shook his head. “I’ll risk it.” He took the coffee, feeling around in his pocket. “Here—”
“Allow me.” Quicker on the draw, Canis darted in with the backup ID. The keypad chirped, and the lock clicked open.
“Ah, I knew it. She did send you. This is truth serum, or sedative, or...” Holding the door for him, Julian took a long sip and visibly relaxed. “Oh, that’s so good, I don’t even care.”
Plopping down on one of the long, dated vinyl couches, Canis rolled his eyes. “Ceci only pointed me in the right direction. I wanted to see you before your second shift started.”
Collapsing onto the cushion next to him, Julian sighed, curly red head falling onto Canis’ shoulder. “Thank you, my dear. It’s good to see you.” The smell of sweat and antiseptic clung to him like a film, the more enjoyable notes of cotton and cedar buried too far underneath.
“Mm.” Kissing his hair, Canis gently guided his head into his lap. “If you’re not too dead when I get off, maybe we can take a shower together.”
“Not a fan of Eau de Twelve Hour Shift?” Julian mumbled into his lap, lifting his head with difficult for more coffee. “Wait ‘til you get a load of Twenty-Four.”
Canis smirked, scritching his scalp with sparkly gold nails. “Not as much as I like you wet and naked.”
“Aha.” Setting his coffee cup down on the floor, Julian stretched, long arms dangling off one end of the couch, legs sticking out over the other.
“So.” Working the tangles out of the hair chopped to uneven lengths on the back of his head, Canis rubbed his back with the other hand, the muscles of his shoulders bunched and tight under his faded black scrub top. “Who’s your friend?”
“Mm?” Julian peeked up from his lap.
“You were talking to someone when I came up.” With a smile, Canis reached back to tighten his ponytail. “I didn’t want to interrupt.”
“Oh, Prentiss?” Julian rolled onto his side, scrub top riding up, and ran a hand through his hair. “She’s, uh, she’s new, she’s—ah, legal—in Legal, um, downstairs.” He cleared his throat. “It’s, ah, freezing down there, so I like to tease her…and she’s joined the secret cabal of people telling me to go to sleep.”
“Oh?”
“Ceci recruited her. Day one, I think.”
“Very nice.” Canis scooted closer to fix the hem of his scrub top. “She’s cute.”
Julian laughed, swinging his legs around to sit up. “Yes, she is. And smart—I don’t know what a mind like hers is doing in a place like this.”
“People say the same thing about you,” Canis reminded him, crawling into his lap. “Hopkins.”
“I may be educated, but I’m plenty stupid enough to fritter my career away in a county hospital.” Julian shook his head, a faraway look in his eye and a touch of pink in his cheeks. “She could be on Wall Street.” He paused. “Or…whichever street it is they have for lawyers.”
Leaning into his chest, Canis reached up and tucked an errant curl behind his ear. “Do you like her?”
“I do. She’s very charming.” Turning into his touch, Julian smiled to himself.
“Mm.” Brightly, Canis smiled. “You should ask her out.”
“Ask her—” Reddening, Julian futzed with his watch. “I, I, I, I don’t know about—I mean—she—I—wh—”
“I don’t mind,” Canis assured him, reaching for his hand. “That wouldn’t be fair. And you obviously like each other—I think it would be fun.”
“B—I—I don’t know, I—” Julian winced. “Well, for one, she’s closer to your age than mine, and I’m really trying not to develop a reputation…my interns are getting ideas, and—I—I haven’t dated a woman since residency…”
Rolling his eyes, Canis squeezed his hand. “So brush up. They have YouTube tutorials now.”
“I—aha—it—” With a sigh, Julian slumped back on the couch. “I’ve never been on this side of things before. I’ve been in poly relationships, of course, but I was always the one invited in to the dynamic—and later excused,” he added ruefully. “I’ve, uh, I’ve never been in a relationship and trying to get a date before.”
“It’s a little awkward at first, but it’s not that big a deal.” Snuggling into his chest, Canis traced circles on it reassuringly. “If she’s really rude about it, you probably wouldn’t have wanted to keep hanging out with her, anyway.”
“I suppose, but—” Julian gestured vaguely, grasping for words. “What do I say—‘would you like to go to dinner, or meet my boyfriend first’?”
“Start with dinner. See how it goes.” Canis kissed the underside of his jaw encouragingly. “You of all people know how to feel things out and ‘see what it’s like when you get in there’. Right?” He squinted. “Isn’t that a thing surgeons say?”
“You’re right.” Sighing, Julian laced his arms around Canis’ waist. “Worst case scenario, I never go down to the haunted basement again.”
“That’s the spirit.” Rolling his eyes, Canis retrieved both their coffees from the floor. “She seems nice. She won’t bite.”
“Ooh, you think so?” Julian made a face. “That might be a deal-breaker.”
