💚Fandoms United For Helene Relief💚
Recently, Hurricane Helene has devastated areas of Appalachia and in particular Asheville, North Carolina. It is the deadliest mainland hurricane in the US since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Many have lost their homes, possessions, and are struggling for food and other basic necessities.
The hurricane hit many areas that are historically impoverished, and the North Carolina State Climate office state that "the full extent of this event will take years to document – not to mention, to recover from."
Katniss Everdeen’s home, District 12, is set in Appalachia, and The Hunger Games movie was filmed in Asheville, NC, and so the Hunger Games fandom wanted to put together a charity event and invite our friends from other fandoms to join. You might have seen us before as Hunger Games and Friends for Helene Relief, but as tumblr has been cracking down on these lately, we were shadowbanned and terminated twice. Nevertheless, this is an effort that we find extremely important to address and have come back as Fandoms United for Helene Relief. Due to this, there have been a few changes such as an updated email and dates that have been pushed back. It’s also the reason that we’re posting this on one of our team member’s personal blogs.
Fandoms United for Helene Relief is a fanworks collection to raise money for local charities addressing the needs in Asheville, NC and other areas affected by Hurricane Helene. Fanfiction authors and fanartists from any fandom can volunteer to submit a new work to the collection. Fans who give to one of the approved charities can then email the event proof of the contribution and receive ALL of the fanwork submitted to the collection.
Approved charities: Our focus is on local charities who have ties to the community, know their needs, and will stay for the long haul in these communities over the years as they rebuild. Our list of approved charities include organizations that help foster children, unhoused, seniors, animals, general relief, and more, for whatever cause is close to your heart. Information and links to their donation pages can be found on this google doc.
Fanwork criteria: As mentioned before, the work needs to be new and not published on any other platform. We ask for a three-month period from the release of the collection until authors and artists post the work to another platform. Fanwork can be from any fandom, for any character or ship. All fanwork must be rated PG-13/T or lower. As organizers, we won’t be able to verify the ages of those donating for the collection and cannot risk sending explicit material to minors.
Timeline: We want all interested contributors to commit to the collection by November 2 by submitting this google form. Final works must be submitted to fuhrgames74[at]gmail.com by November 16. The organizers will then compile the collection and it will be released November 30. Those fans who would like access to the collection can email proof of contribution to fuhrgames74[at]gmail.com at any time up through December 30. Those who email prior to November 30 will have access on the day and those who email after release day will receive it as soon as possible once the proof of contribution is received. Fanfiction authors can then publish their work on other platforms February 23, 2025.
FOR MORE UPDATES AND INFORMATION PLEASE FOLLOW US AT @fandomsunited4hr !! I will be posting more info, which includes our featured artists and writers, there in the future.
Questions or comments can be sent here on our tumblr or emailed to fuhrgames74[at]gmail.com

tl;dr: please, please interact with your local fanartists
Since my dash is talking about artists and ex-artists, I thought it would be not the worst moment to encourage people to engage with fancreations more!
I obviously cannot speak for ex-artists (and there are very clearly many different issues depending on the situation that have absolutely nothing to do with what I am talking about), but I could imagine that maybe some of them would be less resentful of this fandom, if they felt more like an appreciated part of this community, and instead of dedicating time and energy to keep up with something they no longer like, they could have left quietly with fond memories.
I consider myself very lucky since despite being fairly new on dtblr, I have a few lovely blogs who regularly leave encouraging comments in my tags, but I see so many art works without any 'personal' tags (as opposed to 'category tags' that people use to navigate their blog) or any comments in any other form.
So let's make sure that the many artists of this community - and especially the smaller ones - have a good experience! :D
Here some ideas (the list is in no way exhaustive) on how to show love to your local artists:
leave personalized comments in the tags: you can point out what you like about it, maybe comment on a small detail you noticed, compliment the drawing style, etc. (small trick: if I don't feel up to add personalized tags, I put the post in my drafts and then add the tags later!)
send them a message in their askbox - you can even stay on anon if you are more comfortable like that! If you want to reference a specific artwork, you can add the link or include the title / description
you can tag people you think would enjoy the art piece - show off your favorite works
if you have something longer in mind, you can even make your own post and tag the artist themselves to ensure they see your post
write something based on your favorite art - no matter how long or short
draw something inspired by an artist you enjoy - and you definitely don't have to be an experienced artist for that. It's so much fun to inspire each other!
Same goes for our wonderful writers: leave a comment, gush about your favorite quote, ramble to them in their ask box, draw fanart for their work - let them know that you appreciate their creations and that you took the time to interact with it.
At the end of the day, we are all here because we want to enjoy something together. And some of us like to do that by creating our own little works inspired by that common interest. And as online communities tend to do, it is quite often the case that negative attention is a lot louder than positive attention. And it can feel rather lonely at times.
It makes all the difference when you feel like your works are loved and cherished :)

americano : crushing on the local barista
macchiato : love notes on the side of the cup

cappuccino : a cafe rivalry, with the barista next door
mocha : a stranger looks at your over-the-top order funny. in their hand is a plain americano.

Fandom has once again asked me to share an edit she has made! All edits were made by Fandom (http.redshoes on Instagram) and all art used in the edit was made by @just-a-drawing-bean
This edit was made for @naffeclipse and her fic, Sleuth Jesters, which you can find here!
Fandom has a message she would like me to share:
"Hello Naff! I hope that you’re having a good day as always <3
And hello everyone :) it’s me, Fandom, your local fic meme maker for one of the best DCA writers here.
Today, I bring not another meme comp, but another edit of MB!Eclipse. I’m trying an “After Effects” style on CapCut and this is my second attempt at doing so! If any of you saw the DCA content creator appreciation post my friend made, you know then that was my first attempt. I hope that I’ve been showing more improvement since then, and that everyone, (ESPECIALLY the simps), enjoy this edit.
(DISCLAIMER: None of the art featured belongs to me. It belongs to Bean, who is a wonderful artist that everyone should appreciate. If you don’t already follow them, you should! If not, do me a solid and step on a Lego pretty please 🙏😊)
Ac: ririiowo & TSAMS (YouTube)
Sdt: @naffeclipse & @just-a-drawing-bean
Dt: All the simps duhhh (my love letter to you guys after the bullying in the meme comps 🫡💕)
Once more my Insta is at http.redshoes where you can stalk me there. I’ll be making more content there soon, and!! If you liked this edit, go crazy in the reblogs/comments. I wanna see if my plans worked >:D" -Fandom

1 and 16 for the fandom ask :3 Also I don't know a single thing about Dragon Prince, but I'm vibing with you
Thanks for vibing! I felt so bad just out of no where switching completely to The Dragon Prince! They have completely consumed all my thoughts and soul :DD!!
1. list 3 positive things about your current fandom(s)
The fandom is so passionate about the story that is being told, and the fact that we are still kicking after so many other animated western series have been canceled and scrapped is a testament to how much we genuinely love and care about the themes and messages.
The theorizing in this fanbase is so fun in a odd-way it takes me back to when Alex Hirsch did that whole Bill Hunt thing! I remember one of the riddles given to us for season 6 made me pause and rush to a connected book and pull out a map. Hunting down clues and references in not only the show but in lore books, graphic novels, and the website is so fun!
The artist, writers, and crafters are so insanely talented every new piece of work brings me so much joy and reminds me why I love this series so much
16. a tiny detail in canon that you want more people to appreciate
I wish more people appreciated all the details that have gone into the other human kingdoms! I think all the different cultures are so interesting and the fact that the books give each place their own local legends, foods, cultural customs, holidays, history, way of life, trade, etc. is amazing!
#i am fascinated by Evenere especially!#jelly answers#the dragon prince#thank you for giving me an excuse to ramble!!

hey again!! thank you for answering my ask, and for the clarification! i figured you probably had it all sorted out because you're a grown adult and seem to know your stuff but i still said something anyways just in case haha
i should have been more clear with my original ask but i myself still find all this stuff quite confusing so thats my bad sorry 😞 basically it has nothing to do with the labour of printing or if the company publishes it or not, it’s because fan fiction is already grey area, it’s ok when no one is making money off it. as soon as at any point someone makes any money off it, like these printing companies, or commissioning someone on etsy, or even just going somewhere local to get the pages printed, it now becomes illegal - fanworks infringe on the creator's intellectual property and you need a licencing agreement if it's not public domain etc blah blah blah you get it lol
as soon as the word "pay" comes in, it's illegal - you can't pay for anything, even if you are the one that wrote the fanfic (which fucking sucks). but your merch and stuff is completely fine because the references are based on your original writing, like theyre not gonna be like "how dare you sell this tshirt with a bloody B on it thats illegal!!" bcs that whole thing is entirely unique to your work and has no ties to the original property 👍
but thats just my understanding of it, and the specifications of it can get really confusing!! same thing happens with fanart too, technically you aren't allowed to sell fanart - that's why people often only sell it irl at cons to avoid copyright strikes. but then again there is people selling fanart on redbubble and in fanzines etc so like, i honestly don't know how that side of it works as well?? i think its under a different law since it’s a transformative work maybe...??
its all very confusing i wish clarification was more clear 😭 but you sound like you've looked into it and know what you're doing so thats fantastic, and i'm glad to hear. thank you again for answering so quickly i dont mean to be a bother. ur a talented writer and i loved debaser, keep it up 😊
Yeah no problem! I do appreciate the effort to give a heads up. And like to be fair I’ve done my research but I’m not a copyright lawyer or a legal scholar and the law on this stuff is very confusing to me.
In terms of the fanart stuff my understanding is that it is illegal to sell but for the most part fan Artist are too small for copyright holders to go after, it’s just not really a thing that’s done for the most part. There’s even a number of situations where selling fanart led to those artists being directly employed by the copyright holders. I think it’s very rare for fan artists to get sued for copy right and the only examples I know of are from Disney.
For the most part fanart sold is illegal, but it’s similar to torrenting content where its not really enforced so people do it anyways, and often at a pretty large scale. The stuff on red bubble and in fanzines is also illegal as far as I know, it doesn’t count as transformative.
Honestly I think it’s very unlikely that anyone printing my work would get targeted like that, mostly because this fandom is small and I’m even smaller. I only have a little over 1000 followers here and while that’s more followers than I’ve ever had before in my life it’s pretty much microscopic on the internet. Beyond that there’s less than a handful of printed copies as far as I’m aware.
Honeslty I have a lot of issues with copyright law- obviously it needs to apply to things like generative AI which is essentially a very environmentally damaging collage machine, but in terms of fanart and fanfiction I really don’t see how it could be construed as taking away profit from copyright holders.
People for the most part only read my work because they were already into scream, and a number of people have even told me my work got them to watch scream so if anything I’ve created profit for them. Fandom is the reason these original works have the legacy they do, and fanworks are a massive part of that because you can only consume the original content so many times before you get bored.
Beyond that we wouldn’t have some of our most highly acclaimed cultural works if copyright law had existed hundreds of years ago. Like, Shakespeare would have been fucked.
Alright lmao rant over. Tl;dr I’m doing my best to do this all in a legal way, but it’s good for folks to be aware that there may be an issue with the legality of printing my work even if they aren’t paying me. I think it’s unlikely any of you will face repercussions because this fandom is miniscule but if you’re worried maybe don’t post on Tumblr- but feel free to dm me or post in my discord 👍

19 and 38 for the writers ask 🌻💛
19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?
I started writing very early. I can't remember if I've been writing anything else before I wrote fanfiction, but I was 12-13 when I wrote my first Yuu Yuu Hakusho fic. It definitely sucked lmao, but the important thing is that I did it. I think kids who want to write should just go for it.
Before writing though, I definitely read a lot, both fiction and non-fiction alike. I think reading is important in writing because it feeds the skill. Read from people who write better than you. Now back in the day of door-to-door salesmen selling encyclopedia sets (did I just date myself), my parents just went and bought every damn collection they found, and I was just the kind of obedient Asian child who thought, “Oh my parents bought all these books. I should read them!” 😂 I therefore went through the lit classics (on top of amassing a lot of obscure science trivia lol). In the fiction collection, my favorite book was Heidi, but also I dreamt of the day that Alice in Wonderland would make sense lmao, so I read it often. There was also a book of Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales that I loved a lot, and that likely started my love affair with fairy tales (and later, fairy tale tropes in fanfic looool). As I grew older though, style-wise, I think eventually the writers who most influenced the way I write were Arthur Conan Doyle, Bram Stoker, Charlotte Brontë, Anne Rice (though I hate to admit it now akdhjs), and of course, J.R.R. Tolkien.
In school, I alternated between being an artist and a writer in school newspapers from grade school to high school. In university, I opted to join the literary folio over newspaper. I was part of the art and the poetry sub-groups. I think this was an important decision because apart from just writing, the group spent a lot of time reading. I also took a lot of literature electives around this time (because of course my majors were nowhere near art or writing 🥲). I loved close reading sessions the most, and I sincerely think that learning to be a good reader was the best thing I could have done for myself as a writer.
As for bumps, there were a lot! University is when I realised I cannot write professionally. My personality is not cut out for heavy critique, and I lose my drive when assigned topics as opposed to derping around waiting for a muse I get along with to come along. I am also not a disciplined writer, and even now I struggle with regular writing schedules.
After university, I still wrote here and there. By the time I entered the workforce, my writing was pretty solid, so I got a lot of side projects related to writing even though that's not my part of my day job. On the side, I also teach part-time in university, so there is some academic writing going on (albeit Very Slowly™). I also recently had the chance to write for a local publication on LGBTQIA+ issues, which I'd like to continue in the future. But over the years, I have been most active and most regularly wrote for fandom. I hyperfixate like crazy, and some days it's the only way I keep sane. I think fandom is the single most important thing that keeps my love for writing alive.
Where I'm going: I hope to continue writing. I do believe we grow wiser with age. There are things I appreciate more now than I did a decade ago, and I think that seeps into my writing. Our writing inevitably grows with us and I think that's wonderful. I can't wait to read what I can write at 70.
38. What is something about your writing process YOU think is Really Weird? If you are comfortable, please share. If you’re not comfortable, what do you think cats say about us?
I write my fics on my phone. I have been told this is Weird™.

quick abt: jaunty | 27 | nb trans man / ( info will change at times! )
hi there! as the abt suggest, yes, i’m the same one who is celestialvexation, your local dumbass connoisseur of horror ( mainstream and obscure ) and fictional taboo settings -- or, as antis would love to recall, that “nasty proshipper with proship tastes”. i’ve been wanting to create something of an archive that’s a safe space for shippers of both wh and tmc. why them specifically? mainly bc of how similar the fandoms are, and my own personal tastes with both series
so what’s the overview of this blog?
well, i’m looking to have people drop w/e they enjoy or have an idea about these fandoms. i’m talking shipping, headcanons, lil drabbles put in for a later read or for others to enjoy reading, shout outs to other artists / writers / shippers, etc. think of the archive part in the url lmao!
but what are the rules for this, you may ask?
🌟 first and foremost, there IS gonna be 18+ content! since i’m a huge fan of nsfw in general, there’s gonna some of that around and while i can’t get every single minor away from this blog if they follow ( since you can just not list an age ), know that I WILL NOT RESPOND TO ANY URL-NAMED ASKS FROM MINORS OR BLOGS WITH NO AGE LISTED. THEY WILL BE PROMPTLY DELETED. anonymous inbox is always gonna be on, but asks from either of them that are directed at me or involve nsfw? that’s a no-no
🌟 that being said, i’m not gonna rlly say much unless i’m responding to asks directed to me, positive or negative. i just want y’all to have fun, and i usually have the social skills of a potato so don’t take my lack of reply to any headcanon, drabbles, etc as indifference or lack of interest!
🌟 anything goes in all honesty! anything fictional is more than welcomed here, even if i don’t have interest in specific ships, characters, or kinks. again, this is established as an archive; a means to vent or gush about tmc or wh and post w/e is on your mind!
🌟 bc of how i operate things, i WON’T be tagging triggers or themes, BUT i will tag any dark content ( and anything else similar to the category of problematic themes such as self harm, yandere, etc ) with a unique tag along with ones of what type of content is answered ( headcanons, drabble, etc ), the character(s), ship name, and anon hate
essentially, it’s a READ AT YOUR OWN RISK type of thing lmao
🌟 proship / profiction posts will be abundant! yes, i will tag those as well if you wanna get some refs and such
🌟 nsfw content will be labeled as nsft!
🌟 labeling your content as prompts or headcanons or what have you is not required but greatly appreciated!
🌟 and that’s about it for now! i’ll add more when i can think of them, and i’ll be sure to update y’all on what the new info is!
x-x-x ( posted on 4 / 19 )

Hi, @idreamtofmanderleyagain, I’m your anon (linking here for context). I approached you that way initially bc I didn't think that we had interacted enough times to have me approaching you about this not seem confrontational, but since you’ve been kind enough to put so much serious thought into your answer, I think it would only be fair to respond at all with my face attached. I tried to reblog this in direct response to your own post, but between the two of us, we seem to have hit tumblr’s post length limit. go figure.
Ahead of my response, I have to explain part of my perspective outside just being a fic writer: I’m a grad student in a literature department, still work there currently, and have taught undergrad english during my program, so this issue has already had a massive impact on my field. My own experiences have given me reasons to be wary of LLMs in particular, so that does influence my views to some degree. But your original post was mostly about fandom, so I won’t expand on those unless you’d want me to, for whatever reason.
keeping it to just fandom stuff, even with your research, I hate to say none of my previously voiced concerns are assuaged.
AI users have, knowingly or not, justified the initial theft by corporations to train their products that are potentially going to be made into for-profit models as something unfortunate but ultimately worth overlooking in the long run, and already, I know we’re going to disagree at a fundamental level. You said it yourself above, where you acknowledge this is a factor, but this doesn't give you enough pause to question your own use of these models.
You could stop reading now to save your own time and I would understand, but I still wish to respond to these other points.
While I appreciate your apparent genuine effort to interrogate these systems to the degree of their training and use of this data... you'll have to forgive me if I remain skeptical. I'm not surprised it told you what it told you, and as you yourself pointed out, it could easily be spitting out boiler plate answers programmed by the people in whose interest it would be answering. There is no promise of authenticity, as you noted, and I wouldn't be surprised if the program that generates prose based on user prompts is presenting to you what it thinks you'd want to read. Thanks nonetheless.
The arguments presented here seem to invoke the disabled community multiple times in ways that I’ve seen the larger community disagree with, and while we’re not? a monolith? I think this is something I want to address on from my corner of it. Let’s start with the Amazon/Bezos comparison. You could argue I should only shop locally, sure. But I’m sure you’re aware lots of people (myself included) use Amazon bc for things we absolutely need of limited access to certain supplies in our communities, etc, and that’s not even uncommon among non-disabled people. But the fact remains that LLMs are not like Amazon in the sense they’re a super conglomeration that has made itself almost unavoidable, especially to people who live in more isolated areas. I don’t think your exercises in a character chat bar are exactly comparable to that, primarily because using AI in your creative work is not a necessity; people are only doing so out of curiosity.
That, I think, is primary issue actual artists and writers find uncomfortable: people who don’t have to use this technology that was, again, built to some degree on the exploitation of people who have been developing their skills for whole careers, are taking umbrage against the fact that those same creatives are upset with those that don't think this exploitation is worth curtailing or interrogating their personal use of AI. This is an entirely optional part of your writing. Metaphorically, I would argue that this is not Amazon, this is closer to eating Chik-fil-a - you know something sucks for a particular community, but you still have the option to patronize it yourself if you really wanted to.
If that sounds unfair to you, sure, you can assert your right to use the LLMs. But the rest of us who didn’t consent to having our work scraped, especially in the era of a writer’s strike where AI is specifically an issue, maybe won’t be as receptive to the fact that this is something you’re willing to disregard to some degree for the sake of whatever benefits you see to AI in your work. You might not frame it this way, but this is still what it comes down to. Your experience with this new technology is ultimately outweighing voiced concerns that people, as you pointed out yourself, are going to see their livelihoods impacted. I don’t mean to be blunt, but that is genuinely what I believe is being weighed in this issue.
I also disagree as someone who is neuroatypical that the idea of “hard work” the artists and writers are invoking in their arguments against AI is ableist? Because I know exactly what they’re referring to; I have spent literal years working on my craft. I’ve dedicated a great deal of my education to it. I know you didn’t just start writing yesterday, either, and that this is a process that you find fulfilling in some not-minor sense, hence perhaps your initial desire for AI experimentation. While you seem to read the creatives against AI as invoking an ableist standard of “hard work” as in working towards literal health problems (the recent ComicsBrokeMe discussion on various platforms is timely), no one who’s trying to make a serious living out of their craft in the current economic climate is going to say that what they do isn’t hard work, or that they haven’t put hard work in to work at the level they do. Saying that the idea of hard work is in itself ableist downplays the effort many creatives, disabled and not, actually conscientiously undertake in their creative endeavors. I know we both know disabled creatives can do hard work. AI users trying to frame this idea as ableist are well-meaning, but this argument kind of shoots itself in the foot if you believe that talent in the humanities is learned, and not somehow inborn. People who try to frame AI as something to level the playing field are more or less saying on some level that the efforts to learn art or writing either don’t work, or aren’t worth the time needed to practice.
As said previously, disabled people are not a monolith, and disabled people using AI doesn’t mean other people, also disabled or not, have to find it acceptable. As you’re well aware, there are lots of disabled artists and writers who have established distinguished careers for themselves well before LLM and visual models were ever even a concept. There are many ways we’ve found to participate in these disciplines, which makes me deeply skeptical of anyone trying to claim this is the only way they’re able to create something, especially if they use their disability as a shield to excuse it. Again, this is not a necessity in any artistic endeavor, as there are plenty of us who are disabled who manage to create regularly.
As to AO3, I’ll be honest, I am one of the people calling for AI exclusion, or at least open labeling of such products. The process of generating a fic or even just a summary with an LLM is completely different from actually writing a fic yourself and the level of intention involved, as I’m sure you’re aware. The AI isn’t making creative decisions as much as it is filling out a written parameter based on previous examples it’s been given, no? It's not even something I'd really consider "brainstorming" -- It’s just a series of words the algo has arranged in what it believes to be the “correct” order. The operator can refine their prompt, but we both know that doesn’t engage the same process of planning and executing a story yourself does - even, I’d argue, down to a drabble.
You can argue this differentiation would create a culture of secrecy, but that secrecy only flourishes if people using AI purposefully try to conceal doing so. If AI is something you're going to continue to peruse in your own work, I don't see why other users wouldn't adopt with open identification, both so y'all can find each other and so those of us who would rather not engage with AI can filter appropriately. I don't think generations should be engaged with in same way, because they are in themselves the product of a different kind of effort, which you can argue is fannish/fen, but I will gently disagree.
And, if the results of the generated fics are just as vague, confused, and overly general as you describe in your own personal experience, I see that as a further argument as to why we shouldn’t want them there. If the AIs have stopped training, as you’ve read, they’re certainly not going to get any better. And if the AI is still learning, then that only underscores the original problem in the first place. Even if it’s not scraping AO3 or other sources anymore, people like yourself who are feeding their own fics in will help teach it, which you may not see as a problem. AO3 currently agrees with you, so if you want to post the products of your research, you’re certainly able to. If AO3 doesn’t want to ban AI fics, I don’t think the rest of us are in the wrong to either ask for them to be taggable, or to be filed as a completely separate option from fan fic or fan art. You can call them Fan Generations, even, idk but I do think there should be some delineation between the process that went into these and user-written fiction.
AO3 does have a public source code, IIRC, so if people like yourself wanted to gather and set up a dedicated archive of machine-generated work, I imagine you’d find some takers for volunteering and fundraising - not as many at first as the original, sure, but if this is something that a side of fandom wants it then has potential to grow.
On top of that, people continuing to feed/refine the models will only remove that vagueness/confusion you cite to justify why it’s harmless. We’ve already seen this be true of imaging AI being distinctive from human-created art with the numerous human fingers gradually whittling down, right? If that’s the case, then I don’t see why people who generate their fics wouldn’t want to have them tagged as AI, if it really makes no difference to them.
All of the above, plus citing some artists being incorrect about how AI works or being too mean as an argument towards why people should be able to use AI without pushback from the creatives they stand to impact, has made me think that your problem is less with community fracturing/safety and more an issue with the tone other people take when discussing this. This is where we come back to our initial disagreement over your examples w/r/t discussions of trans issues and vegan issues - because I do feel the people angry about the way they’re being treated unfairly/exploited are justified in expressing anger at the people who do so, but also those willing to ignore this treatment.
You can argue that this is people turning their anger with the AI threatening their livelihoods at the people using the AI, but then we come back to something similar to the “guns don’t/people do” argument that we’ve both doubtless heard a lot in the past few decades. Sure, you could say AI itself isn’t threatening our fields, people are - and maybe not even always the people directly using the AI, but the suits that will hire them for cheap, or the person who doesn’t see the value in human intention and artistry in the pop culture they want to consume. But if people continue to work with these models and they continue to learn, it only increases an ongoing social devaluation of our disciplines, and therefore decreases the value of our labor/effort by the people who don’t see the difference.
Again, as you seem fine to further experiment with AI yourself and feed it your own work, you might think that this is just a necessary trade to be made in the name of optimized individual experience with these systems. I don’t know.
So, ultimately - I centrally disagree with the initial framing of this as fans attacking other fans, or even an issue of safety or witch hunts. This is people who do creative work, professionally or for fun, having a problem with it being infringed upon by corporate entities in the name of training a machine, and then having the use of that exploitation justified by people who are seeking to ultimately take advantage of it. And not even due to the inescapable nature of doing so, but out of what ultimately boils down to their personal desire to use AI in their own work.
This lands especially heavy in a time where lots of creative people are already trying to
convince the powers that be that their cultivated knowledge and skills are worth respect and proper restitution,
convince the people that consume the work that they aren’t entitled to a creative’s labor for free just because it’s Art,
deal with this weird resentment from people who want to use AI even though many have explained how they’re being hurt by them, and seeing arguments that we’re somehow censoring the creativity of these people by doing so.
It’s a shitty hydra, and we don’t appreciate the people who are contributing to any of its heads.
If you want to call the initial theft a “technicality” and claim it shouldn’t be controversial to continue your use of AI, my only suggestion is to not ask creatives impacted by this to forfeit their right to be angry at this use. That doesn’t excuse targeted abuse, of course; nothing does, end of. But I also don’t think that artists, writers, and other people who have been exploited being generally frustrated and even angry at AI, and the people who perpetuate that exploitation by creating the demand for AI is on the same level as someone being shitty to you as a person or anyone else. There’s not a witch hunt. It’s just going to have to be recognized as a pushback to this ongoing adoption of AI that its makers, funders, and users are pulling for.
You frame this as innocent people getting hurt, but innocent people already have been hurt by these systems, and have detailed how, and that doesn’t seem to warrant as much concern by the proponents now calling for amnesty when that they’ve got something new to tinker with.
You’ve already said you won’t be making any further posts about it, so don’t feel obligated to respond to this. I want to respect your space, and I’m also not really looking to argue - I didn’t intend to write this much about it, as it’s something I find disheartening and frustrating all around.
I don't think I'm actually going to convince you of anything, having read your own justifications, etc. I just wanted to acknowledge the work you put into this post with my own thoughts. Thanks for the willingness for dialogue, you have been someone whose takes/analysis I enjoyed previously.

you know what? the real reason why some of yalls fandoms are so dry is because none of you know how to support fanwork creators in the first place
ive been in rarepair fandoms with like 10 other shippers but the number doesn't even matter because they're the most supportive people ever, yelling in your comments and sending you their live breakdowns and whatnot. in an environment like that, what person wouldn't want to keep creating? it doesn't even matter that something only reaches 5 people when those 5 people are always cheering you on.
but ive also been in fandoms where all people do is,,, complain. complain about how little art there is, how little fic there is—and then when people actually do make something, there's so little response? like, i thought you wanted your fandom tag to be populated? i thought this was what you wanted?
do you know what happens when people don't get response on their work? that's right, it demotivates them from doing more. in the same way that comments energize fanwork creators to make more, a lack of support saps their will
of course there will be people who still continue to create despite a lackluster response, but i think i can pretty confidently say that the majority of us are fueled by fellow fans actually engaging with what we make. it makes it feel like what we're doing is worth all the time and effort we spent on it—which, by the way, is a fucking lot! ive seen artists, fic/meta writers, giffers, editers, etc all work tirelessly on fan content that ends up flopping at like, 15 likes and 1 reblog. and half the time that 1 reblog is a self reblog.
guys, it is so tiring. numbers do not define one's worth, but fandom is built on interaction, and every fanwork is a gift. you can't keep something alive without putting in the effort. if you like something, please, reblog it, yell at us about it, i don't care just let your local fanwork creator know how much they're appreciated. you can't whine about people leaving fandom when you never gave them a reason to stay in the first place.
ive been simmering like a pot of pasta sauce the whole day so let me post my rant about how you can't expect a thriving fandom without a thriving comment culture (or hell, even just a reblog culture)
#poppy speaks#i am not leaving any fandom (other than the ones I've already left & outgrown!) but!! i see it happening with others!!!! it makes me so#mad on their behalf#long post#hit tweet follow me

As a creator I constantly feel the pressure to create. A day spent in writer's block, a day where i do nothing but care for myself, even a day where I struggle to beat my minimum word count and feel like what I have written isn't up to par is a bad day.
A day where I do not publish itches and scratches.
I do receive nothing but acknowledgement for my work, and it's a scarce currency these days, so I feel constant pressure. A day without a new chapter, a day without a microfic. Or a day where I do publish. There is always the scared question: will it be good enough? Will someone like it?
I am addicted and I know it. It would be wiser to just stop. The thing is: I am not alone in this. All these people out there feel like that, they crave the interaction with their readers, watchers, listeners.
They crave the little click on the heart, crave even the smallest comment.
We are a gift economy and lately it seems on side is becoming very miserly. I, for the part will try to break away, I have a few very dedicated, very friendly people around me, who love what I write. I will write for them, talk with them.
Maybe, once I ran out of juice completely, and lately it looks like it, I will stop publishing completely. But you out there, you still want your daily fix, ah... fics.
Treat your creators accordingly. Your writers, your artists, your podficcers. They deserve more than a click and a shrug.
They deserve more than even the occasional comment. If they give you the chance, talk to them. Over AO3, tumblr, discord. Whatever they feel comfortable to open up. Tell them how you appreciate them and do it often. Become friends, become allies. Become cheer-readers and beta-readers. Become advisers in your field of expertise, become sensitivity reader.
Even if you are not a creator yourself - or believe you aren't: you are no passive consumer, you can and should contribute.
The smaller the fandom, the more important - or it WILL shrink. You are hungry for something new? You feel your fandom, ship, favourite trope is underdeveloped? Well... it is on you. If there is something, anything, go and cheer it on. If not: create it. Or tell the people you know do create stuff you like about it. Inspire them.
I am tired. Nobody these days really talks. The highly praised fandom friendships? I didn't encounter them. There are a few select people I keep in contact with. They answer in kind - they are highly appreciated, believe me. But fandom at large? No.
This is by far not the first rant you've seen on the topic, not the last, and likely not the best. But we cannot repeat it often enough, so it goes not just in your head, but into your heart and bones: support your local creator. Just do it.

1, 10 and a wildcard of your choice for the questions pls and thank youuuuu!!! xox
Hey neighbor! I’m just catching up on things, so forgive my lateness. These look like some fun q’s, so I’ll give it a go. Be prepared for some long, rambly answers! 1. What are 3 things you’d say shaped you into who you are?
Fandom: Okay, so I’ve been in fandom for a longggg ass time. I think we’re going on to 19 years soon? I have no idea where I would be without fandom because the person I was before that was unsure, lost and intimidated. Fandom has helped me cultivate so many long-lasting friendships and that was what turned me into a creator. I don’t know how people know this, but I started off as a fic writer before becoming a fan artist. I used to write weekly drabbles, long fic and I did write a BB (44k!) once upon a time. The community I joined then was super wholesome and welcoming. The writing from those days makes cringe like hell now, but I really appreciate what I learned from that time. Then a couple of years later I jumped into making art, and for a while I was writing and drawing at the same time (don’t ask me how I did that while in uni either). I actually made my first HP art pieces while still in school, and I was thinking about pursuing art for uni. I had one piece that was accepted into an art gallery for a HP convention, and that was when I also made my first Drarry piece for a fest. I have not looked back ever since. Since I recharged my batteries and I’m now writing and drawing at the same time again, it’s amazing to see how much has changed and how my styles have matured. Processes have changed, and quality is way more important than quantity. But also, seeing how all of these things have reached other people and brought them joy has been pretty awesome. Art: See above. I am 10000% sure if it wasn’t for fandom, I would not be making art right now. And I know that would be super sad, because art has been part of the reason why I’ve always gotten hired for jobs, even though it’s not the premise of any of the roles I’ve had/have. But it’s the methodology and thinking out of the box that counts. Taking risks and seeing what sticks. That’s what has made me stick out every time I meet new people and I tell them I’m an artist.
Original art (which I do make too) is fun, but fanart has always given me a liberty to play in one or multiple sandboxes and has allowed me to take things to the next level in some crazy ways. I’ve found that it’s almost like journaling or milestoning things and ideas whenever I make something for a fest/event. It’s super different from making art to be sold for online or at conventions. Since I’m part professionally-trained (traditional) and part self-trained (digital) and I’ve been making art for quite some time, I also can’t see myself not making art. That’s just how I express myself...when visuals are easier to portray than words are. Life without would be like be cutting my limbs off. Tea + Tumblr: Okay, so here’s a fun story! I got into loose leaf teas and became a tea blender because of Tumblr back in 2013. Yeahhh. Adagio Teas introduced fandom teas at the time (where you can make your own blend of teas), and since I was using Tumblr to promote my art biz when that was the thing to do, I met some other artists who were making teas and I jumped on the bandwagon. It was such a pleasure meeting some amazing tea blenders (like Cara McGee or Aun-Juli Riddle), because we all were putting so much love in making these dumb teas about characters we loved. We’d illustrate all the labels and figure out tea percentages that suited each person. There’s actually some strategy around this (feel free to ask more if you’d like :P). Sooo, yeah, I’m still making teas to this day. Selling fandom teas somehow became a big foundation that has kept my art biz going. Local cons know me as the tea person, I have regulars who come back for more, and when I do come out with something new, people get really excited about it. I’ve sort of turned tea into an experience for people. And you can probably guess it...mentioning this in job interviews has gotten me some major kudos. :D 10. Would you say you’re an emotional person? YESSSS. 1000000% This doesn’t need a long answer, but I’ve always been a sensitive person since I was a kid (my mom actually had to read books on how to deal with that), and given my answers above, I pull from emotions when it comes to creations, listening to music, and pretty much everything. 6. What’s the best and worst part of being online/a creator?
Best: Ummm, I have to say, seeing people lose their shit about something you’ve had to keep quiet about is kind of fun and amazing. I’ve been participating in anon fests for a long time, and it’s always fun to see people guess who made what. I know that my style for art has changed a lot over the years, and it’s way more obvious whenever my art does get posted (since I have yet to find someone who draws so crosshatchy like I do). I’ll take that as a win though. People will either leave comments of squee, or they’ll reblog the crap out of it (something that wasn’t as easy to do back in the LJ days).
Worst: Imposter syndrome is so realllll. I know we’re our own worst critic, and sometimes, it’s difficult when I have days where I think my work sucks, or I have to ask why I’m making something. I’ve definitely learned over the years that it’s super important to enjoy not just the end result of something but also the process of making it. Because at the end of the day, we should do what makes us happy.
Thanks for the ask! ___ Previously answered: 11 and 17 Want to know more? Ask a q for questions I think would be fun to be asked!

“moonlight muse” lacheri’s 1k collab event
hi everyone! first of all, thank you guys so very much for allowing me to reach this milestone. I’m releasing this a bit early, but I’m so impatient and this has been sitting in my drafts for a MINUTE. I am so very grateful to every single one of you that’s supported me and my writing — it’s an honor. special thanks to @onwiings and @ryukatters for helping me come up with ideas for this event! you guys are the best and I am so very thankful for everything you guys do. <3
prompt

I’m leaving the concept open, but the theme is late night shenanigans. dive bars, crowded clubs, empty movie theaters, a midnight stroll on the beach, a camping trip, stuck in a room with the person you’ve been pining over — anything that could occur between the late night and early morning hours. make it as grungy, fluffy, edgy, or pure as you would like! all plots are accepted! you can base it off of a trope, a song, a movie, whatever inspires you! if it’s a song let me know and I’ll add a link to it with your submission!
rules
must be 18+ to join this collab. I’m setting the deadline to September 21st, but it’s not a strict deadline. update: the deadline is now October 21st! update 2: deadline is now extended to Novemeber 6th due to kinktober! <3
to join: send me an ask or a message with your chosen character(s), and a summary of your concept/idea, as well as if it is not sfw/dark content or sfw! (additional tags such as smut/angst/fluff would be appreciated as you develop your idea!)
this is open to both the aot and jjk fandoms!
I’m allowing a count of 2 repeat characters. (ex: two Eren stories, two Levi stories, etc.) this will be first come first serve! two characters to a story are also welcomed! (ex: Erwin x reader x Levi)
must meet a minimum of 500 words!
if you have any questions feel free to shoot me a message or an ask! I love collaborating ideas with other writers, and helping in any way I can! I know the concept is very open lol so if confused please let me know if I can be of any help!

No, it's basic kindness? Like, mainstream etiquette?
1. Not all fanfic is meant to be an art piece meant to be critiqued and appreciated. When someone doodles as an adult or takes photographs for their Instagram story to show their friends, are these meant to be critiqued as art? When a friend shows you a recent drawing they do in their downtime do they do it asking for concrit and analysis? Not all photos and not all creations are offered for analysis and if you saw it in real life, its just basic social awareness.
2. A very common reason for why artists don't want this because in actual, real life settings you control direct critique you get to get it from those who actually can critique. Like, comments on AO3 is direct to the writer ths same way asking someone for their thoughts is. But in real life, artists do these workshops amongst peers (other artists, viewers who are the target audience) because artists know they are more likely to be qualified to analyze and are also able to factor in the context of analysis. Important on the axis of very local or representative works but also on genre and interest. There is no way to filter that for public posts. It is, frankly, not uncommon for random dude who obviously doesn't know shit to offer their criticism like its helpful and needs to be addressed.
Yes movies and books get criticism from people but they generally do not do this direct (eg via email or face to face) to the artist. Which brings me to my next point-
3. Comments are the most obvious place to not fuckijg do this but online public spaces is also rude because instead of general criticism not being something the author sees, its now in their comments and in the spaces they frequent. If you are any kind of artist or fan of artist, it is really really really fucking normal to not want to see the opinion of every Tom, Dick and Harry. It is an ungodly amount of thoughts, not useful and suffers from the fact that well! Not everyone is your target audience, everything can have divided opinions and its just not productive. You can do it via DMs and closed circles still, no ones stopping you.
But also
4. At the end of the day— fandom having bad opinions don't come from fanfic culture. I really, really doubt it. Fic writers remain a passionate but small minority, and even fic readers are not a majority of any fandom. Hardcore fic writing has existed for ages but rarely has fics been very mainstream to actually read, relative to all the viewers and readers of the original media. In addition, critical analysis and understanding have always seemed more tied in to the make up of fans. Like, I've found generally weaker fics and thoughts in fandoms where there are actually less long time artists and fans. Aka people who are generally not versed in critical reading coming into fandom.
And also like. If you are in any fandom thats like that. I genuinely don't know what youre doing because pointing out things you like/dislike seems.. Pretty normal. I see textposts of people going 🥺🥺🥺 over lines regularly. Comics and Star Trek do have a regular stream of people picking and choosing episodes/issues that are bad or not Correct and a number of those are widely debated.
Also in a communal space dedicated to anyone who likes a piece of media for any reason- yeah not everyone will act how you like or dislike/engage with media for the same reasons as you. Have you ever considered finding smaller communities or friends where you can get what you want? Like genuinely.
The fan fiction culture of "no criticism allowed ever ever ever!" has seeped into fandom culture in general, to the point that anyone who analyzes media is dismissed as pretentious and annoying and I'd just like to say: it sucks
#I didnt see the last addition and it annoys me so much#I also feel strongly on the not everyone with a comment is important to hear like#Sorry no#On the specific axis of me as a writer as well whos been focused on filipino stories as well lik#A not only is measuring my stories on diversity and inclusion via non filipino measures useless#Frankly non filipinos would not have the context or experience to even critique what im trying to communicate#I also tend towards like imperfect relationships and darker stuff#And while im open to critique they require critique with acceptance of my goals and baseline interests#Which just isnt universal#And there are plenty of people online who think the stuff i write is inherently bad#And yeah i do think encouraging the mindset that everything should be critiqued to people who may not knkw how or where to critique#Is always gonna be worst on the writers and artists who are already unpaid spending hours on works and sometimes grossly underappreciated#I cant help but feel the latest addition and maybe even the first is like#It comes from an understandable place but feels so needlessly callous#Do they know theres a number of initiatives on getting ppl to read amd leabe comments?#Like idk#Whatever
