Fifteen sunflowers, some in bloom and some turning. Yellow on yellow pigment that darkened to ochre. Yellow earthenware vase decorated by a complementary blue line that cut across its middle. The original was painted by one of the loneliest men on earth. But painted in a frenzy of optimism and gratitude and hope. A celebration of the transcendent power of the color yellow.

Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag
I was tagged by @bookcub. Thank you! ❤️
Number of books you’ve read so far: 56
Best book you’ve read so far in 2024: So I'm not actually done with it yet, but Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath by Heather Clark. It's fantastic! I'm a little less than halfway through (it's over 1000 pages), but I already know it's going to be my top book of the year, unless something really, REALLY special comes along.
Best sequel you’ve read so far in 2024: Emily Wilde's Map of the Otherlands by Heather Fawcett with The Sunshine Court by Nora Sakavic as a close second.
New release you haven’t read yet but want to: The Prisoner's Throne by Holly Black, which is the sequel to The Stolen Heir. I just haven't gotten my hands on it yet.
Most anticipated release for the second half of the year: The Trouble with Mrs. Montgomery Hurst by Katie Lumsden! It's coming out in July, and I'm anxiously waiting for my pre-order to arrive. I read her debut book The Secrets of Hartwood Hall last year and loved it.
Biggest surprise favorite new author (debut or new to you): I don't consider an author a real favorite unless I've loved three or more of their books, but I think Devony Looser will end up being a favorite. I read and adored Sister Novelists: The Trailblazing Porter Sisters Who Paved the Way for Austen and the Brontës, and now I need to get my hands on the rest of her books.
Newest fictional crush: I don't have one.
Book that made you cry: Nothing has actually made me cry yet, but Lonely Castle in the Mirror by Mizuki Tsujimura made me pretty emotional.
Most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): My copies of the brand new Norton Anthology of English Literature 11th edition! They are so stunning, and I adore them. And I got them for free as desk copies! I can't take a picture right now, but I'll post one soon. I'm truly in love with them.
Book that made you happy: The Sunshine Court by Nora Sakavic. Just it's existence makes me happy! I never thought we'd get another All for the Game book!
What books do you need to read by the end of the year? Hahahaha...too many. But for the absolute must-get-to ones: The Doctor's Wife by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, Ariadne by Ouida, Sensational Victorian: The Life & Fiction of Mary Elizabeth Braddon by Robert Lee Wolf, and The Moors and the Fens by Charlotte Riddell. They're all for my dissertation.
I'm tagging (no pressure, of course): @oldshrewsburyian, @thequeerlibrarian, @dauen, and @appleinducedsleep.

Just want to bring it to your attention that far right assholes in Germany right now claim that Germany lost again because Lord of the Lost refused to wave the German flag (for obvious reasons) and waved a rainbow flag instead. Appearently to facists , this is why Germany lost

My villain origin story is German translations using formal „You“ between love interests or really good friends, even though they are on first name basis (no one here in Germany would be on first name basis AND use the formal „You“) and only switch to informal You after they have sex

Famous people all changing to Thread.com immediately like tumblr isn’t right there
Is this app a mess? Yes
Has it survived SuperWhoLock, Yahoo and a Purge? Also yes
I don’t know about you but I stay with the app that is running since over 10 years. Not reliable but a steady mess. I never know what will come next but I know one thing for sure. This ship sinks last. We don’t sink when a tiny fire happens because we are on fire the whole time anyway

4. Do you use sarcasm a lot?

Mid-Year Book Freak Out 2023
I was tagged by @bookcub and @the-forest-library. Thank you!
1. Best book you’ve read so far this year
Little Thieves by Margaret Owen! It's a retelling of "The Goose Girl" and it was absolutely amazing!
2. Best sequel you’ve read so far this year
The Stolen Heir by Holly Black. It was a great follow-up to The Folk of the Air trilogy, and I can't wait for the next book!
3. New release you haven’t read yet
Painted Devils by Margaret Owen, which is the sequel to Little Thieves. It's on my birthday list with multiple stars next to it so my mom knows I really, REALLY want it.
4. Most anticipated release for the second half of the year
I don't have one. Or at least, I can't think of any.
5. Biggest disappointment
So Happy For You by Celia Laskey. Not because it was bad (which it was--I knew that going into it though) but because the author spent the whole book showing that friendships don't have to (and sometimes shouldn't) last forever only to renege on it at the very end and have the narrator forgive the absolute psycho friend who tried to MURDER HER!
6. Biggest surprise
Mortal Follies by Alexis Hall. I'm generally not super into romance, but I requested from NetGalley on a whim because the cover was pretty and it sounded fun. I ended up giving it 5 stars! I loved the narrative voice and the world Hall created.
7. Favorite new author (debut or new to you)
Katie Lumsden, who is Books and Things over on YouTube. Her debut novel, The Secrets of Hartwood Hall, came out in February and I loved it.
8. Newest fictional crush/newest favorite character
I'd say it's a tie between Vanja from Little Thieves and Cigarette from Under Two Flags by Ouida. Both are absolutely awesome.
9. Book that made you cry
There hasn't been one so far. I think I'm kind of unconsciously avoiding anything that would make me cry.
10. Book that made you happy
Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett. It was my first read of the year and was just the perfect book for me. I couldn't stop smiling while reading it.
11. Favorite Adaptation
In a completely unshocking turn of events, Little Thieves. 😆 (I'm counting fairy tale retellings as adaptations here; if we're talking film adaptations, I don't think I've watched any yet. Or if I did they were bad and I've stricken them from my memory.)
12. Prettiest Cover
The UK edition of The Secrets of Hartwood Hall. I waited an extra month to read the book because I needed that edition. It has gorgeous end papers!
13. A book you need to read before the end of the year
Way too many haha. For the sake of brevity, I'll limit myself to three that are for school. Princess Napraxine by Ouida, Aurora Floyd by Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and The Athelings by Margaret Oliphant.
I'm not sure who has done this already, but I'll tag @dauen, @lettersfromthelighthouse, and @appleinducedsleep (no pressure)!
