Rain and Apple Blossoms

A nameless convict suffers in a prison camp, sentenced to years of hard labour for his crime. There, he is tormented by cruel guards and an even crueller chief overseer who seems to enjoy humiliating him. Eventually, he escapes, and he finds himself cared for by a kind stranger who is on her own journey of grief and self-discovery. With soldiers still hunting for the fugitive, every moment he spends in his unlikely caretaker's company is a risk to them both.

Heavier on whump than plot. Heavier on hurt than comfort. But it's all there.

I have a single question! Can you eat the apples off of Epel’s branch antlers?

Ooh! This is a fun one!

A good piece of advice is to only eat them if Epel gifts the apple to you! Otherwise, they'll work like the apple in snow white (due to his UM) and knock out whoever decided to pilfer a treat without asking!

Additionally, any apples grown from his branches are a good source of iron! They taste a little bit metallic, although there's an odd, ashy sweetness that covers it up for the most part - it might even be a little sickly if he's particularly fond of someone. The inside of the fruit also looks somewhat odd - much more red than normal apples, which is likely why they're such a bright ruby red colour. The texture is almost indiscernible from a normal apple though, perhaps even more appealing and crisp than most would be!

They're nothing like normal apples, but I feel like they could be somewhat of an acquired taste...

Smutsgiving 2023: Apple Pie / Tim Rockford

Pairing: Tim Rockford x Female Reader (Black Days pairing)

Author's Note: It's Tim's turn to shine. I figured he fit with a dessert specifically because of the way he and Reader first met. Hope you like it.

Takes place in the Black Days universe, down the road from where we left them in the last chapter.

Smmary: This is Apple Pie America.

“Tim you’re going to be late!” Calling up the stairs to him, your eyes flicked to the clock on the stove. “You were supposed to leave ten minutes ago.” 

“I’m coming!” He yelled down the steps, and then only moments later you saw his socked feet, the typically clean-pressed legs of his jeans following. “I pulled a button off of my shirt and had to change it.” Pressing your lips together at the sight of him still working to button the cuffs of his sleeves, you waited. “I’ll fix it when I have time, but I just threw it onto the bed, and -”

“I’ve got it, Tim.” Stepping closer, you reached out to straighten his collar. “It’ll be good to go when you get home.” 

“Thank you.” He relaxed slightly, reaching up with one hand to run his fingers through his already tousled hair. “Why does it smell so good? What are you -”

“Made you an apple pie to take in to the station. I reheated it this morning.” You bit the inside of your cheek and then closed your eyes. “I figured for anyone else that has to work today, it’d be nice to know it’s in the break room if they want it.” 

“I’m sorry.” He leaned in, tipping his head forward to rest his forehead against yours. “I thought I was gonna be off, and -”

“No. It’s fine. I understand.” Your arms went around his waist, though you were careful about not wrinkling his shirt. “This was part of the deal, right?” 

“Right.” He said your name, waiting until you were looking at him to continue. “Thank you for understanding.” 

“Not necessary.” Wrinkling your nose, you smiled at him. “But seriously, you’re going to be late.” He swore when he saw the time, and then kissed your forehead with a loud smack of his lips before he spun away from you and grabbed the jacket hanging over the back of one chair, tossing it over his shoulder. “Be careful, Tim. Call me later if you can.” 

“I always am.” He nodded and picked up the pie and his keys, flashing you a quick smile. “And I will.” 

He disappeared through the garage door only a few seconds later, and when you heard the motorized whirr of the door shutting, you finally let yourself deflate, pressing your palms to the countertop and hanging your head. 

You weren’t mad at Tim; you were just disappointed that for the first time in as long as you could remember, you’d be spending a holiday entirely alone. “And who knows when he’ll get home.” 

There was nothing else for you to do, so you turned the oven off and then headed back upstairs, wandering back into the bedroom. It was still early, and you didn’t have a single thing on your schedule for the day - so you decided to go back to sleep for a few hours, crawling into the large bed on Tim’s side and burying your face in the pillows. It’s almost like he’s here. 

It only took a few minutes for you to fall asleep, though your lips were still set into a deep frown, even as you drifted off.

Later that night, you stepped through the front doors of the police station, pulling your coat tighter around your body. 

After signing in, you headed up to the floor where Tim’s office was, waving hello to the two other people you passed on the way. It was much quieter than usual, with only a skeleton crew on staff - and for the first time, you wondered exactly how Tim had gotten roped into working that day when the station was getting along fine with so few people there. Doesn’t matter. He wouldn’t have come in if he didn’t have to.

When you got to his office, the door was partially shut, though the light was on behind it, the glow visible as it spilled out into the main office area. “Tim?” Knocking twice, you pushed the door open. “I’m here, I -”

Cutting yourself off when you saw that he was on the phone, you winced and mouthed the word sorry to him before pushing the door mostly shut behind you and taking a seat on the chair opposite his. The conversation was a lot of Tim humming in agreement and saying “yeah, ok” and “sure. If you want”, but throughout it, he never took his eyes off of you. 

It still made you feel giddy sometimes when he stared at you, his dark eyes assessing your form with quiet and unashamed interest. But the difference now was that you didn’t have to pretend you weren’t doing the same in return. Because he likes it just as much as I do. 

He hung up the phone a few minutes later, removing his glasses with two fingers before setting them down on his desk and raising that same hand to massage his temples. “I’m so fucking glad you’re here. Today’s been a shitshow.” 

You leaned forward and put your hand on his arm, but after a second you pulled it back, rising to your feet. Fuck that. Circling the desk, you stepped behind his chair and then leaned down, wrapping your arms around him and burying your face against the side of his neck as you squeezed. “It’s almost over, Tim.” You didn’t know what had happened - or why he was upset, but it didn’t matter. “Is there anything I can do?” 

“No.” He angled his head toward you, using both hands to squeeze your forearms. “You’re here. That’s enough.” 

The two of you stayed like that for long moments, Tim’s office completely silent aside from the sounds of your quiet breaths, but he moved first, saying your name and then shifting in the chair. “What?”

“C’mon. Since you’re here now, we’re gonna go get some of that pie.” 

It took you a few minutes to get everything together, but after a quick trip to the break room and a stop at the coffee maker, the two of you were back in his office with the door shut, the light from his desk lamp softly illuminating the room. 

“I’m sorry it’s not key lime.” You licked your fork clean, deciding to break the tension. “That’s not very Thanksgiving, though.” 

“If it was key lime, I wouldn’t have bothered bringing it in.” He smiled, the man winking at you. “But no, this is great. Everyone that had some fucking loved it.” That made you feel good - you and Tim were still in the early stages of your relationship and you didn’t want to do too much, but it wasn’t a secret that he was dating someone, a few of his coworkers regularly asking about you and how you were doing. “I probably won’t get out of here until late tonight.” 

You’d known it was coming - the phone call and stack of folders on his desk were good indicators - but it still made you sad. “How late?”

“Midnight? Maybe after? I’m not sure. Since everyone’s with their families and all the stores are closed, it’s a good time to poke around on a couple cases.” He broke a piece of crust off and popped it in his mouth, frowning. “I hate leaving you alone on a holiday.” 

That admission in and of itself was huge, and spoke volumes about his feelings toward you. Well, shit. “It’s just a day, Tim.” You shrugged, wiping apple filling from your fingers with a napkin. “It was just going to be the two of us anyway. I can stop on the way home and grab dinner before I spend the rest of the night watching Netflix. It’s no different than any other -”

“It should be.” He sighed, pushing himself away from his desk. “C’mere.” You circled the desk and stood in front of him, waiting. “I’m gonna make this up to you.” 

“You don’t need to.” Giving him a tight smile, you shrugged. “I promise.” The last thing you wanted was for him to beat himself up over something he couldn’t control - and that you were well aware of as a possibility. “Wh-” He reached out and took your hand as he stood, urging you closer with his other arm wrapped around your waist. “Tim.” 

“You’ll let me.” He smiled, lips hovering just above yours. “You like it when I apologize to you.” That was true - and had been true since the first time after the Ryan confrontation - and though you didn’t like having misunderstandings with Tim, making up once you’d gotten past them was more than enjoyable. And we both know it. 

“I do.” Agreeing, you kissed him on the mouth, the press of your lips lingering. “But so do you.” He laughed at that, letting go of your hand to wrap you in both arms before kissing you again, lips parted so that he could slip his tongue through. 

You tasted apple in his kiss, and when you parted so that you could take a breath, you saw a smear of the filling at the corner of his mouth and on his mustache. “Hey, wait a second.” Reaching up, you swiped at it with your thumb, Tim’s eyes widening when he realized what you were doing. “I can’t walk out of here with filling all over my…” 

Trailing off, you took a short breath when Tim turned his head, enveloping the tip of your thumb with his lips and sucking, his eyes half closed. I wasn’t … fuck. His teeth grazed your skin as he drew his lips back and you gasped again, body going stiff. But Tim was ready, taking a half step forward so that you were forced against the edge of his desk, your thighs pressed to the beveled surface and his flush with yours. 

“How about you don’t walk out of here just yet?” He whispered the words, a smirk appearing on his lips. “There’s no one else around, and when my door’s shut, they all know not to bother me.” Your stomach bottomed out at the implication of his words, head moving up and down in a nod before you’d even thought through your answer. Oh, hell yes. “You sure?”

“Fuck yeah, Detective Rockford.” He growled and then was kissing you again, the action a little more desperate than it had been moments earlier. And you didn’t mind, easing yourself into a sitting position on his desktop and widening the spread of your legs so that he could move even closer. He broke away from your mouth and kissed his way down your cheek and over your jaw, teeth grazing the skin there. 

And when you lifted a hand to tangle your fingers in his hair, giving the locks a sharp tug, his hips jerked forward. The man ground against you briefly and let you know exactly how sure he was.
