Stop Arming Israel
Yesterday (December 16) UK MPs debated petitions signed by over 100,000 people, calling for the immediate revocation of all arms export licences to Israel and 283,000 calling for the recognition of a Palestinian state, which were delivered before the general election
Since last October, at least 45,000 in Gaza have been murdered by Israel, in which Britain has been complicit through supplying arms.
In September, the Labour government eventually banned 30 out of 361 licences in a move labelled “tokenistic” by campaigners.
During the debate, Labour MP John McDonnell said: “I think history will judge us all for not doing enough to stop this.”
The former shadow chancellor said that while he was pleased that the petition is taking place “there’s a level of frustration now I don’t think we can contain any more.”
He asked: “Why isn’t democracy being exercised here to stop this?”
Mr McDonnell concluded: “I've had enough of coming back here every week, as you can tell chair, we need action now from this government.”
Among the exports excluded from Labour’s ban are components for F-35 war planes, which have been used to drop 2,000lb bombs on civilians in Gaza and are linked to a global supply programme.
Tumblr media
Business and trade select committee chair Liam Byrne said: “Last week in front of my committee, the Defence Minister said it was technically possible to track these parts, but it was contractually impossible.
“Indeed, Lockheed Martin supplied me with a letter to say that if I want to know anything about the parts, I need to address our queries to the Department of Defence in the United States.“
He noted that the government admitted in the High Court in November that it continued to export the parts despite knowing there was a “clear risk” that they could be used by Israel to violate international humanitarian law.
“We now have the ICJ advisory, we have the ICC arrest warrants. We have the government’s own assessment,” Mr Byrne said.
“I cannot now see how this government can legally defend a position to keep these arms export licences open.”
Ahead of the debate, a cross-party of MPs including Independent Jeremy Corbyn, the Green Party’s Carla Denya, and Labour’s Diane Abbott held a banner reading “Stop Arming Israel” outside Parliament to show their support for a full arms embargo.
Palestine Solidarity Campaign director Ben Jamal said: “Opinion polls have shown that a majority of the public support the suspension of UK arms sales to Israel, because it is using them in a barbaric, unending assault on Palestinians in Gaza.
“We call on all MPs to speak up and ensure the government fulfils its obligations under international law, starting with a full arms embargo on Israel.”
Campaign Against Arms Trade media co-ordinator Emily Apple said: “Labour’s tokenistic suspension of some arms exports doesn’t go nearly far enough — but in particular its refusal to suspend the open licence for F-35 combat jet components makes this government just as complicit in Israel’s horrific war crimes as the previous Conservative government.
“Successive governments have prioritised arms dealers’ profits over Palestinian lives.
“This has to stop. This petition is an attempt to ensure the government does what it should have done in the first place — suspend all arms exports to Israel and uphold international humanitarian law.”
A spokesperson for Stop the War said: “It’s welcome that this petition is finally being debated, having been conveniently buried by the parliamentary system earlier this year, but given that just a fortnight after Labour won the election senior ministers warned that a total ban on arms sales to Israel would undermine US ‘confidence’ in the UK, the outcome is fairly predictable.
“While public opinion is loud and clear, this immoral government remains seemingly determined to ignore it.” Elizabeth Short Adapted from: https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/time-to-listen-labour-stop-arming-israel

Christmas is coming early – the Fiona Apple albums: Tidal, When the Pawn, Extraordinary Machine, Idler Wheel are all getting a vinyl re-pressing on the mid-price Sony Legacy record label this December (2023-12-08).
Pre-orders at Rough Trade, Target, Juno (UK) and many many other Sony retailers.
These are re-pressings not remastering, so the sound should be the same as previous issues. The pressing plant may be different but I doubt you will be able to hear any difference. They very likely will not have the same inner sleeves/booklets as the VinylMePlease editions (which are still intermittently available). All are on black vinyl.
UPC codes, Google these to find local suppliers
Tidal: 194398742410 When the Pawn: 196588302510 Extraordinary Machine: 196588302718 Idler Wheel: 196588302619

Unfinished Timeline for an Untitled Setting
Critique and advice is more than welcome, though please be nice about it. Goes up to about 2081 rn, though I plan to get at least another 50 years further in before I get to the time I want the bulk of the setting to be set in.
Timeline:
2022: First controlled break-even fusion reaction, followed by first controlled net-gain fusion reaction.
2025-2026: Increasing unrest in USA leads to mass riots outside the white-house. Sweeping reforms after growing revolts threaten to become a major armed rebellion. NASA miraculously left untouched, general increase in standard of living. Economic crisis narrowly averted.
2027: First nuclear thermal rocket (NTR) tested in orbit by NASA and DARPA. GPT-style language modeling declared “dead end” for self-aware AI.
2030: First Lunar base established under NASA Artemis program. Suez Canal temporarily blocked by a poorly driven cargo ship again. Evergreen Shipping goes bankrupt.
2034: Lunar Gateway established under joint NASA, ESA, JAXA, DLR, ASI, and CNSA. Lunar helium-3 mining declared officially nonviable. Radial detonation engines become standard for lower ascent stages, SpaceX Starship, NASA SLS, and Roscosmos Soyuz phased out. Drop in launch prices.
2034-2036: Additional modules added to the Lunar Gateway from SpaceX, KARI, ISRO, and Roscosmos. Lunar Gateway Collaborative Group (LGCG) established consisting of all current contributors to the station.
2036: First commercial fusion energy plant reaches full operation in France under ITER. Mass production of Tritium begins. First fully private space station under SpaceX. Asteroid mining corporations begin formation. Establishment of Nigerian Organization for the Development of Space (NODS). Ecuador experiences communist revolution.
2036-2037: First manned martian mission under LGCG, first human footsteps on another planetary body.
2037: Elon Musk assassinated. New SpaceX leadership declares plans for space elevator. North Korea collapses, Korean peninsula unified under South Korean leadership, becoming simply Korea. Indian nuclear stockpile secretly surpasses 50000 Gt. First baby born on the moon.
2040: Artemis base becomes semi-self sufficient, producing it’s own food and air from hydroponics, and water from mined lunar ice. Lunar LH2 and hydrolox production begins. Lunar population passes 100.
2040-2042: First commercial fusion power plants established in the US, UK, Australia, Korea, and Japan.
2042: A joint US Government and SpaceX black operation destabilizes Ecuador, leading to a corporate takeover of the territory.
2044: Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, and New Zealand form West Pacific Trade Organization (WPTO). Construction of the base of SpaceX’s planned space elevator begins off the coast of Ecuador.
2047: LCC completed at CERN. Mission for permanent martian base declared. Major economic crisis in China, intervention from several megacorps results in a decrease in Chinese government power and increase in corporate control in the region. SpaceX space elevator counterweight construction begins in geostationary orbit.
2048: Major revolution in quantum mechanics brought on by new data from the LCC. Lunar population passes 250.

EU’s proposed Chat Control law has become a bone of contention between members of the bloc. First proposed by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson in May 2022 as part of bloc’s push to combat child sexual abuse online, the framework of the bill has now come under fire, earning itself a derisive term “Chat Control”.
France, Germany and Poland have particularly refused to accept a clause that allows for mass scanning of private messages by breaking end-to-end encryption. Some tech companies, along with trade associations, and privacy experts have all vehemently opposed the regulation.
On the other hand, Interior Ministers of Spain and Ireland have supported the proposal. Separately, a network of organisations and individuals, advocating for children’s rights in Europe, have lashed out at EU leaders for failing to tackle child sexual abuse online.
What are the concerns of those against the proposal?
Scanning end-to-end encrypted messages has remained a controversial issue. That’s because there is no way to do this without opening risky backdoors that can be accessed by third parties who can exploit the vulnerability, in turn ending the promise of end-to-end encryption.
Tech firms that treaded the encryption bypassing path have have often been made to retreat. In 2021, Apple announced NeuralHash, a feature that could automatically scan iCloud photo libraries of individual devices for child sexual abuse material, or CSAM. Employees and activist groups expressed concerns over the loss of privacy. A year later, Apple said it had abandoned the initiative.
Another looming issue the iPhone maker recognised in the process was how authoritarian governments could potentially misuse the feature by using it as a tool to target individuals who oppose the regime.
Erik Neuenschwander, Director of user privacy and child safety at Apple, admitted this in a note saying, “It would […] inject the potential for a slippery slope of unintended consequences. Scanning for one type of content, for instance, opens the door for bulk surveillance and could create a desire to search other encrypted messaging systems across content types.”
When brining in a similar clause through the UK’s Online Safety Bill, lawmakers attempted to make way for client-side scanning of private and encrypted messages. The proposal was postponed after receiving pushback from encrypted messaging app owners like WhatsApp and Signal. The duo threatened to leave the UK if such a law was passed. In its final stages, in September, 2023, the House of Lords considered the potential security threat that the clause would bring saying it would not implement scanning until it was “technically feasible.”
What is the status of EU’s Chat Control law?
On June 30, a new draft of the proposal is set to be be reviewed. Legislators have now left the idea of scanning text messages and audio, and are instead targetting shared photos, videos and URLs with an adjustment to appease the naysayers.
Another tweak in the making could be people’s consent in sharing material being scanned before being encrypted. But this compromise has been largely called out as a farcical one. A report by Euractiv which has been confirmed by internal documents show that if a user refuses the scanning, they will simply be blocked from sending or receiving images, videos and links hardly leaving them with a choice.
Despite these measures, EU’s enforcement of such regulations have seen exemptions to the rule. In November 2023, the European Commission reportedly published a proposal to amend the regulation on a temporary derogation of the E-Privacy Directive against CSAM. Under the regulation, specific online communications service providers were allowed to sift through or scan messages to detect, report and remove online child sexual abuse material or CSAM and content that solicits children. The regulation is set to expire in early August . The initial plan on the table was to simply extend this regulation for another three years. But, according to media reports, plans for further extensions were stalled in February this year.
Meredith Whittaker, President of Signal app called the measures to assuage concerns as “cosmetic”, and has signed a joint statement along with a group of over 60 other organisations like Mozilla, Proton, Surfshark and Tuta, voicing out her concerns. Whittaker has echoed her earlier warning saying Signal will leave the UK rather than undermine end-to-end encryption.
A blog, co-authored by Riana Pfefferkorn, a research scholar at the Stanford Internet Observatory and Callum Voge, director of government affairs and advocacy at the Internet Society, notes, ”If government surveillance is a concern in an established democratic entity like the EU, what hope is there for beleaguered democracies like Turkey, India and Brazil, much less autocracies?”

Geography:
Kamikita is based on the UK islands physical geography.* Out of all Klenith nations, Kamikita has the most obvious seasonal changes in its colours, summer is green, autumn is red, winter is brown/white, and spring is pink. Lots of Kamikita is seasonal including religion, trade, and magic. Its animals often migrate through here on their way either to Solistal for summer and Birkina for winter, so seasonal appearances are special. It rains less in the summer here but that doesn't stop its natural growth throughout. Earthquakes don't affect Kamikita much, neither do tsunamis with Birkina island being off their coast on the west. Their most dreaded disaster is drought, is truly devastates the nation even when prepared for as their livelihoods are built around their agriculture and rivers.
*but only when I feel like it lol
Architecture:
Kamikita has fields of crops as far as the eye can see, most wild because there is simply too much for farmers to tend to. Roads in the nation are winding to give you time to take in the view; to 'stop and smell the roses'. The nation's natural beauty and power is it's biggest draw for travelers as there are limited wonders. The most popular two being, Kamikita's 'ever glowing' lake that has been dragged many times and still there is no physical magical source besides the water itself; and the man-made wonder of Klenith's largest greenhouse tempts gardeners from all over Klenith. Inside, there are flowers for everything; flowers that can raise the dead, cure any illness, to kill with a glance, to give beauty and grace, to strengthen your body. Its capital city, Maashi, is a founder of garden cities* alongside its sister city in Birkina. Many of Kamikita's cities are bustling garden cities now, with farmhouses being sparse overnight buildings dotting the landscape. The actual architecture of the buildings follow traditional japanese patterns, the most common motifs are dragons, the sun, and floral designs.
*a real thing, research garden city planning for more
Trade/Commerce:
Kamikita's primary export is food; wheats, mango, pineapple, apple, peach, and other such fruits. This can be in its fresh whole form, or as jams, pickled, fermented, or juice. Their largest imports are GK's artisans, Solistal's magical seals, and Birkina's dyes. They hold the majority of trading across Klenith in their control due to the physical trading routes being within their borders, and their merchants guild being strongly supported by their royal family. It is funded by the royal family, possibly because their nation would crumble without the constant economy flowing for them.

Indian Rap Heroes DIVINE & Karan Aujla are Anime Action Stars in "HISAAB" Video
Tumblr media
DIVINE and Karan Aujla are heroes in the fast-growing Indian hip-hop scene. The groundbreaking duo puts their power into action in "HISAAB," a new anime-influenced video from their new collaborative album Street Dreams. "HISAAB" mixes traditional Indian instrumentation with a hip-hop pulse, as DIVINE and Karan Aujla trade bars–DIVINE rapping in Hindi, Karan Aujla rapping and singing in Punjabi–to examine the price of fame and the responsibilities incurred. Directed by Debjyoti Saha for Goppo Animation, the video for "HISAAB" is a visually-striking, action-packed, Anime-influenced short film. DIVINE and Karan attempt to escape from a surreal asylum, full of autonomous soldiers and giant cobra snakes, in an effort to save their freedom and sanity in the harsh world. The video surpassed 1 million views in just 12 hours and is currently in the Top 10 of YouTube's Trending Chart.
youtube
Last week, DIVINE and Karan Aujla shared Street Dreams, a 7-track effort that demonstrates why they are among the most exciting artists in the Indian scene. Out now via Mass Appeal India, Street Dreams had an extremely successful debut, reaching #1 on Apple Music within 24 hours of release, and taking over the number one spot on Apple Music's Album Charts in 40 countries, including India, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. All seven songs from Street Dreams charted on Spotify's Daily Top Songs in India, and are currently trending on Instagram.
is a relentless effort, bringing bilingual bars that express sentiments that need no translation. The album features production from Western heavy-hitters like Boi-1da, WondaGurl, Harry Fraud, Leven Kali, and Trox, who deliver premium productions for Karan and DIVINE to annihilate, along with hip-hop producers from the Indian scene. "Hisaab" finds the two artists counting their myriad accomplishments in 6/8 time, taunting any comer who can't match their quick maths, while "Top Class / Overseas" lays playful strings atop sliding 808s as DIVINE and Karan proclaim their valedictory status. "Yaad," meanwhile displays a softer side of the duo, as they trade off vocals with Indian-Canadian singer Jonita Gandhi.
Also among the highlights is "100 Million," the tape's lead single and music video, which made waves across the globe. Defined by nostalgic hip-hop production reminiscent of Y2K-era Dr. Dre, in this case produced by American producer Trox (50 Cent, Cordae), “100 Million” is an anthem for those with grand dreams, the two icons reflecting on the enduring habits that propelled them to greatness. The song arrived in mid-January, with a video filmed in Dubai and directed by Karan Aujla’s long-time collaborators Rupan Bal, Dilpreetvfx and Anmol Raina. The song and video immediately became a huge success–the song reached the #1 spot of the YouTube Trending Charts in India, and reached the Top 10 in countries including Canada (#2), New Zealand (#4), UK (#6), Australia (#8) and the UAE (#8). Overall, the song racked up over 21 million YouTube views to date, as well as over 6 million Spotify streams.
Karan Aujla and DIVINE have individually topped several charts across India with their albums and songs such as Karan's “Softly”, “White Brown Black”, “Mexico,” and “Players,” and DIVINE's “Mirchi”, “359 AM”, “Baazigar” (80 million YouTube views), and “Kaam 25” (65 million YouTube views). Their upcoming collaborative project is the first of its kind in the Indian music space and is poised to be a landmark moment in Indian music history.
With Street Dreams out now, the dynamic duo prepares to make their presence felt on American shores. Stay tuned for more videos and announcements from DIVINE and Karan Aujla in the near future.

BMG, Beggars Group and Hipgnosis each have strong opinions on streaming. Here are those opinions.
January 21, 2021 / By Tim Ingham
(...) BMG is, obviously, a big deal in the world of music rights. The company generated over $670 million across publishing and records globally last year.
Its DCMS submission sets out a number of changes it wants to see in how the wider music industry pays out from streaming. It’s fair to say that most of them are directed at the three major music companies.
Writes BMG: “A rule of thumb is that streaming services pay around two-thirds of their revenues to the music industry for the music rights they license.
“The problem for artists is that while the recording attracts the largest share (around 80%) of the music rights pot, a traditional record deal may offer them 20% or less of that share, and 20% of 80% of 66% is 10.5%. The problem for songwriters is that while they typically have much higher [royalty rates], around 75%, that percentage is applied to the smaller share (around 20%) of the music rights pot, and 75% of 20% of 66% is 10%.”
BMG continues: “The only realistic way for artists to increase their income from streaming is for them to receive a higher share of the revenue generated by their recordings. The only realistic way for songwriters to increase their income from streaming is for them to receive a greater share of the total pot of money paid by streaming services for the music they use. Both proposals are likely to encounter significant push-back from the traditional music industry. This is understandable since achieving them would entail wholesale changes to working practices, improvements in efficiency and a more robust approach to overhead. None of this is comfortable, but we believe it is necessary.”
BMG is largely very positive about Spotify, Apple Music et al and the impact each has had on the music industry so far. It does, however, raise a couple of key concerns on recent developments regarding SPOT and its fellow platforms.
“[Some streaming services’] attempts to overturn a court-mandated increase in songwriter royalties in the US is an outrage to many songwriters,” notes BMG, which also believes the industry’s “slow progress made towards adopting user-centric licensing is disappointing”.
BMG takes particular issue with “the recent announcement by Spotify that artists may have to trade lower revenues for access to certain playlists” which BMG says “potentially sets a dangerous precedent”.
It adds: “Spotify’s November 2 announcement that it is to offer labels paid-for personalised recommendations which influence algorithmic playlists has been widely criticised by artists as a form of digital age ‘payola’. While it is too early to say whether such language is justified, any mechanism which is seen to rig the market in favour of the biggest and best-funded players will inevitably raise concerns about market manipulation.”
Summing up its position, the company writes: “BMG views artists and songwriters as our clients. Our job is to be a service provider to them. Viewing artists and songwriters as clients changes many of the historic assumptions of the music industry. Since they are clients, it is not their job to keep BMG in business; it is BMG’s job to add value to their businesses.
“Since [artists and songwriters] are the principals, they should receive the lion’s share of revenue, hence while traditional record companies pay royalties of 20% or less, our new recording deals credit recording artists with 70% of revenue or more. We don’t do this because we are do-gooders. We do it because we believe that’s the logic of the streaming revolution and the modern way to do things.”
BMG adds, with a wink and a nudge: “It is a strange business in which ‘We don’t rip off our clients’ is an attractive sales pitch, but it is an indication of how far we believe the music industry lost its way that we identified it as an area of competitive advantage from the outset.”

i'm so done with today
it's 12 years today since my dad died and I can't bake an apple pie from his recipe because the assholes that dumped me here made me give up my gas stove and i can't afford an electric one.
and because the fucking moneygrabbing youtube assholes blocked me (because i won't turn off adblock and i'm too dumb for the workarounds) I can't listen to his favourite music to 'remember' him
the place i used to watch uk tv suddenly stopped existing and the company that apparently took over their customers only have shitty AI bots as customer support (even though the original place still seems to work?? and they replied to people on twitter up to an hour before they sent out the email about ceasing trading??)
i have to clean my animals cages because my social worker and HER BOSS are coming over tomorrow for an evaluation of her work... but all i want to do is eat my weight in junkfood and hide in bed for a week
and on top of all that i'm freezing my ass of in this stupid flat even when the heating is on

Refurbished Phones from Big Phone Store Save Money and the Environment
It is costly to keep up with smartphone trends. Refurbished phones fit that criterion while being affordable and environmentally friendly. Refurbished phones are repaired, cleaned, and tested before being sold again after being traded in, sold to a shop, or returned. Customers can obtain a premium phone at a moderate cost while reducing power waste with this environmentally friendly strategy.
Why Should You Buy Second Hand Phones?
Refurbished phones provide more than just cost reductions. Every year, billions of electrical devices harm the environment. The Big Phone Store's expertly repaired phones mitigate this effect. By reusing completely recovered phones, we can all help to decrease electronic waste. Reconditioned equipment may also be less expensive than new equipment.
Quality is guaranteed by The Big Phone Store UK
Do you have reservations about used phones? All refurbished phones at The Big Phone Store are subjected to a 90-point inspection to ensure they function as well as new phones. Cosmetic states include "Like New" for perfect and "Good" for moderate wear. Every item, regardless of appearance, comes with a 12-month warranty, comprehensive testing, and a commitment to customer satisfaction.
